Welcome to the programme. We start in morocco, where Search And Rescue crews are trying to reach people in the areas worst affected by friday nights powerful earthquake. More than 2,000 people are now known to have died. Three days of National Mourning have been declared. This is the small town of asni in the Atlas Mountains about 30 miles 45km south of marrakesh. Very few buildings have been left undamaged by the 6. 8 magnitude quake. Live now to marrakesh, we can speak to our correspondent anna holligan. This is a un World Heritage site and the Culture Agency has offered to help morocco come up with a repair strategy. In marrakesh, 300,000 people, about a quarter of the population, has been affected. I just want to take you closer to give you the full picture. This is the mask and the minaret has crumbled. There are piles of rubble here earlier which have been removed by heavy machinery. Some of the street signs have been vented and twisted. Here, you can see some of the debris has fallen onto the trucks. But if you look around the square, there is a very different picture, tourists returning to the souks and cafes all around this medina. We have been getting more information on the International Assistance that is starting to trickle in now. Spain has sent a team of rescuers. The Czech Republic too, and president macron in france has said he is prepared to help. But the real help is needed beyond the walls of this medina up in the remote Atlas Mountains. In the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, the small town of asni, a Community Crushed and crumbling. Rescuers struggling to access these remote villages close to the epicentre, where hundreds of people are still feared to be trapped under the ruins of their fragile clay homes. , the ruins of their fragile clay homes. , ~. ,. ,. , homes. Everything went down on them the mountains, their homes. White maker in the historic heart of marrakesh, shards of Cultural Heritage lie strewn beneath the crumbled minaret of the Djemaa El Fna mosque. Electric cables and shutters hang precariously over the famous market souks. Adam smith, a british tourist from sheffield, recalls the moment the tremors struck. Gathered our belongings as fast as we could. We heard the entire room shaking, the class and the doors. We grabbed our passports and ran out. All the guests were doing a similarthing. And ran out. The red cross has warned that the next 2a hours are critical for reaching any survivors in time. Pope francis has also used sunday mass at the vatican to express sympathy for the cherished people of morocco. And amid all of this destruction and devastation, there are stories of hope and resilience notjust in the people who are turning out here in marrakesh to help, but also all around the country, people are queueing up to donate blood. We saw the Moroccan National Football Team all setting the example, donating blood. But the realfear the example, donating blood. But the real fear is for the people in those remote communities. You saw asni at the top. The landslide has prevented rescue teams from getting there. Thats where the focus of the Search And Rescue efforts will continue in the hope that they can reach the survivors who are still trapped underneath the rubble. Anna holligan in marrakesh, thank you. Lets stick with marrakesh, around 72 kilometres or 45 miles from the epicentre. This was the moment the quake struck there, prompting people to sprint for the streets. The city has reported a lower death toll than other areas, but considerable damage to buildings. Thousands of moroccans spent a second Night Sleeping outside on the streets, fearing aftershocks. Some have been describing their fears and sense of loss translation | returned to my house and noticed many cracks in the walls. I cannot sleep there. Im asking the authorities to help me and bring in an expert to assess whether its possible for me to return to the house or not. Look where all these people are sleeping. Theres no help for us. 0ur houses have been cracked, others destroyed, like my daughters house, which has collapsed. We are in a chaotic state. Its painful to enter the ancient city and witness the collapsed homes and see people in great suffering. Its a painful experience when this happens to your brother or sisterj its really painful. Manchester united Winger Antony has agreed to delay his return to the club to address allegations of assault made against him. The 23 year old was due back to training on monday after being dropped from brazils squad for their World Cup Qualifiers against bolivia and peru. But united say it has been agreed with the player that he will delay his return until further notice in order to address the matter. Antony denies all the allegations. In a statement, the club said Manchester United acknowledges the allegations made against antony. Players who have not participated in International Matches are due back in training on monday. However, it has been agreed with antony that he will delay his return until further notice in order to address the allegations. As a club, we condemn acts of violence and abuse. We recognise the importance of safeguarding all those involved in this situation, and acknowledge the impact these allegations have on survivors of abuse. The uk Prime Minister rishi sunak has warned the chinese premier of his significant concerns about beijings interference in democracy. It follows the arrest of a parliamentary researcher on suspicion of spying. Mr sunak met li qiang at the g20 summit in delhi hours after news of two arrests in the uk under the Official Secrets Act emerged. Mr sunak has been speaking in the past couple of hours. Well, i obviously cant comment on the specifics of an ongoing investigation, but with regard to my meeting with premier li, what i said very specifically is that i raised a range of different concerns that we have and areas of disagreement and, in particular, my very strong concerns about any interference in our parliamentary democracy, which is obviously unacceptable. Lets turn to delhi, where india has formally handed over the g20 presidency to brazil at the Closing Ceremony of the groups annual summit. Prime minister Narendra Modi completed the transition by passing the ceremonial gavel of the presidency to the brazils Luiz Inacio Lula da silva. Earlier the leaders gathered for a ceremony at the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi, indias independence leader. On saturday, the group issued a joint declaration on The War In Ukraine, but the statement made no mention of russian aggression. My colleague Christian Fraser is in delhi at the summit and sent us this update a short while ago. Yes, the Leadersjetting Out Of New Delhi this hour, at the end of two days of the g20 summit. And i would think immense satisfaction on the part of the indians that they got the communique across the line, because when the leaders arrived here 48 hours ago, there was a giant gap in that text specifically in relation to ukraine. There were 200 sherpa meetings to find the right language that would find consensus in the room. But today, as the gavel was passed to brazil, that communique adopted in full. Earlier in the day, though, a lot of it was about the ceremony. The leaders were out and about in new delhi. First, lets focus on rishi sunak, who went to a hindu temple proud hindu himself, of course with his wife, akshata murty. This was the akshardham temple, in new delhi. He prayed there, they were shown around the temple. And then he made his way to raj ghat, which is the memorial for Mahatma Gandhi who, of course, was assassinated in 1948, just after india had secured its independence from the british empire. This is the spot where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated all those years ago. And all 20 leaders joining in the rain, monsoon weather here in india today, in the rain to present their memorial, their wreaths to Mahatma Gandhi. Interesting because, of course, he was a man who was very much focused on self reliance. He made his own clothes, he didnt want to pay taxes to the british empire, Mahatma Gandhi, and theres a little bit of that in Narendra Modi. He talks about india becoming self reliant itself, and there is a theme there, in the way he approaches the Indian Economy at the moment. But for him personally, mr modi, in the run up to an election next year and a third term, i would think hell be very pleased with what hes got out of the weekend. But lets talk specifically about the ukraine passage, because thats where most of the focus has been. And particularly how its been watered down when you compare it to the document they agreed in bali a year ago. So gone is deplores in the strongest terms the aggression by the Russian Federation against ukraine. And inserted in its place, we reiterated our National Positions all states must refrain from the threat of the use of force to seek territorial acquisition. Sergei lavrov has been giving a press conferencejust an hour ago at a hotel here in new delhi, clearly well satisfied with the language that they secured. But he spoke specifically about the black sea initiative, the supply of grain which theyve cut off, theyve walked away from that deal and theyve renewed their bombardment of the ukrainian ports, which was widely condemned here. Mr lavrov said it is possible to revive the black sea initiative, as long as the west removes obstacles to the export of russian grain and fertiliser. Heres the response from the british Prime Minister, rishi sunak. The 620 is obviously a large collection of countries that dont all necessarily share the same values and the same perspective, but it is important that the 620 has come together and issued very strong condemnation for the impact of The War In Ukraine on food prices and energy security. Thats something that i was keen to highlight. Im glad that that is there in the statement, in black and white. And theres very Strong Language highlighting the suffering that the war is doing and the impact its having on food prices, and the need for russia to rejoin the black Sea Grain Initiative and to halt attacks on civilian infrastructure in ukraine. Thats something that i wanted to make sure we did here, thats something that has happened, and thats something that everyone has sat up and taken notice of. Uk Prime Minister rishi sunak there, speaking at the g20 in delhi. President joe biden has hailed a greater era of cooperation with vietnam as he arrived on a visit that aims to bring the two countries closer than theyve ever been and counter the rising influence of china in southeast asia. Hanoi and washington are expected to sign a new partnership agreement, less than 50 years after the end of a conflict that left millions of vietnamese and 58,000 us Service People dead. Well, lets get the latest on that war in ukraine, where there are little more than 30 days of fighting left before the weather will hinder kyiv s counter offensive. Thats according to americas top ranking us Military Officer. Speaking to the bbc, general mark milley said colder conditions would make it much harder for ukraine to manoeuvre. It comes as kyiv was attacked by russian drones early on sunday, with debris falling in several districts. But ukrainian Officials Say no casualties have been reported. At least ten explosions were heard in the capital as Air Raid Sirens sounded. A short while ago we spoke to paul adams who is in kyiv for us. Hes been speaking to ukrainian officials about the g20 summit declaration. It has been praised by russia and the us. Heres what he had to say. The response from the spokesman at the Foreign Ministry yesterday was that there was nothing for the g20 to be proud about. In fact, he reprinted the words of the g20 on The War In Ukraine as if he was a teacher correcting a pupils homework, scoring out the references to The War In Ukraine and replacing them with the phrase The War Against Ukraine and including the word aggression because last year, last november when the g20 addressed this subject, they included a reference to russian aggression. That was conspicuously absent in the communique released in delhi yesterday. So as far as ukraine are concerned, it represents a step back from the kind of comments the g20 was making last year. I dont think there was any great sense of surprise. I think there was always an expectation that india would try and find some middle ground between the western nations that are very keen on strong expressions of condemnation for russia, and other members of the g20 who are a little less comfortable with that. Its worth pointing out, and this is something that carl bildt, the former swedish Prime Minister, mentioned yesterday, that it does refer to the inadmissibility of countries altering International Boundaries through the use of force and the importance of sovereignty. So its a mixed package as far as ukraine is concerned, but certainly not as strong as they would have liked. Now its time for a look at todays sport with hugh ferris. Hello from the bbc sport centre. The defending champions will enter the fray at the Rugby World Cup today. But before south africa, the opening Match Of The Day at the tournament in france has provided a win forjapan. They actually went behind to chile in pool d. But the deficit didnt last long. Japan eventually winning a2 i2. Later, its wales v fiji in pool c. But between the two, scotland take on south africa in marseille. After coco gauff won her first ever grand slam, the mens singles final at the us open could deliver Novak Djokovic his 24th. That would equal the sports record. But hell have to beat Danil Medvedev to do it. Something he couldnt in the final two years ago. But djokovic admits hes now at the stage of his career that every moment like this is worth cherishing. The fact is that at 36, every grand slam final, yeah, i dont know, could be the last one. The brazilian was due to return to training on monday having been dropped from his National Squad after claims made by his former girlfriend, which are being investigated by police and which he denies. It has now been in the seventh consecutive day when temperatures have reached 30 degrees or more. They may challenge the 33. 2 we saw yesterday, making it the 33. 2 we saw yesterday, making it the warmest or hottest day of the year so far. But if it is too much for you, as it is for me, it will become fresher through the week ahead. Why . This weatherfront is going to meander southwards. Behind that weatherfront, we have a change in Wind Direction and a change in air mass, so a cooler and fresher source of our air. But at the moment, it is still humid out there. This is the cloud that has been bubbling up, intense thunderstorms developing across the north west of england. They will develop more widely across england and wales, probably in two parts of Northern Ireland in southern and eastern scotland. This will be the game changer, the weatherfront behind which we have that fresher air. But for the rest of today, it is still stifling out there. There is still stifling out there. There is sunshine across central and eastern areas, but even here, there will be Thundery Downpours which could lead to sudden flooding, as we will see potentially england and wales. Not for all. Will see potentially england and wales. Not forall. Some will see potentially england and wales. Not for all. Some places will keep bright weather in the sunshine and high humidity. Temperatures are not as high as yesterday, because we have more clout. It is just in central and eastern areas where we are seeing temperatures above 30 degrees again. 0vernight, the storms continue. Starting to clear away from Northern Ireland and southern and eastern scotland, but we will see some sea fog, and our weatherfront starts to advance in the north. Slightly fresher behind, but for most of us, yet again, and uncomfortably muggy night for sleeping. Into monday, that weatherfront looks to fizzle out somewhat, but it is introducing more cloud as it trundles southwards. Again, Centraland Cloud as it trundles southwards. Again, central and eastern areas might see a good deal of dry and bright weather. Still very warm and humid, but not as high temperatures as recent days. Certainly fresher behind our weatherfront to the north, which made pep up again as we go through tomorrow evening and overnight. It is not a wash out, but it is turning cooler and fresher and more unsettled for most. The warnings are online.
