Which purchased endemol in 2020, said the bbc has issued a statement this Afternoon Saying brand was working for channel 4, the bbc, and Acting In Hollywood Films during the period of the claims, all of which he denies. Vincent mcaviney has the latest. His behaviour made him no stranger to the tabloids but, this weekend, serious sexual allegations mean Russell Brand has made all the front pages. Perhaps over the course of the evening, some of my accoutrements could make their way onto your body once one of the most ubiquitous faces on british tv and radio, working for mtv, the bbc and channel 4, before building a career in hollywood for a time. Its the way these organisations oversaw brands conduct which is now coming under the spotlight, with the Foreign Secretary saying the Entertainment Industry as a whole has questions to answer. There are some real challenges where you have these very, very acute differentials in power, whether that be in the Entertainment Industry, whether that be in politics, and we see this in the commercial world as well. And i think we have to be particularly careful when we listen to the voices of the people who are relatively powerless. July ist, 2012, was when my rape happened. It was in los angeles that brand met a woman the investigation by The Sunday Times, the times and channel 4s dispatches are calling nadia. She says they had a brief sexual relationship, but then on a later occasion, he raped her. Those speaking out have had their identities described. Im like, no, thats not happening, were not doing that, and i tried to get away from him. And at this point, hes grabbing at my underwear. Im telling him to get off me and he wont get off. I was very distraught, trying to get out of the house. Another woman in the uk, alice, said she met and had a brief relationship when he was in his 30s and she was 16 and still at school. She says he later sexually assaulted her. I was pushing him away and pushing him away, and he wasnt. He wasnt backing off at all. So i ended up having to punch him really hard in the stomach to get him off, and i was crying, and he said, oh, i only want to see your mascara run, anyway. The allegations have all been denied by Russell Brand in a video message. I was very, very promiscuous. Now, during that time of promiscuity, the relationships i had were absolutely always consensual. I was always transparent about that then, almost too transparent, and im being transparent about it now as well. And to see that Transparency Metastasised into something criminal that i absolutely deny makes me question, is there another agenda at play . Hours after the revelations, Russell Brand appeared on stage in london last night for a sold out show, receiving a Standing Ovation. Brand is set to play windsor s Theatre Royal on tuesday, as part of a tour across england over the next few weeks. The bbc has been unable to confirm today whether these performances will still be going ahead. Our reporter tom brada is outside wembley park theatre in london. Tom, wembley park theatre in london. In the last coupli weve tom, in the last couple of hours weve had more reaction from channel 4. Developments have been coming through thick and fast. Channel 4 will be conducting their own internal investigation following those allegations against Russell Brand. We have asked the Production Company who produced the programme, to report these findings satisfactorily to us, conducting its own internal investigation, anyone who is aware of such behaviour to contact us directly. His capacity as a presenterfor one of contact us directly. His capacity as a presenter for one of the spin off shows of big brother. He has also been a statement from the metropolitan police that i would like to read out to come earlier they had said they had not received any reports in relation to the allegations, that were revealed by channel 4 and The Sunday Times, but they gave an updated statement saying we spoke with The Sunday Times on saturday, 16 september, well be making further approaches to The Sunday Times to ensure that any victims of crime through they are spoken with how they may report any criminal allegations to police. There will be more conversations between the metropolitan police and channel 4 and The Sunday Times about that investigation. And of course tom, you are at family, that is where Russell Brand performed a sold out show just after those broadcasts. I understand he was late arriving on stage. Thats right, Russell Brand arrived about an hour later than he was originally scheduled for the show, that was simply down to traffic, but when he first came onto stage he did seem to make a reference to the controversy surrounding him. Theyre obviously some things i absolutely cannot talk about and i a priest that you will understand that was The One And Only reference he made throughout the gig to the allegations he has tremulously denied and particularly the night and that Youtube Video uploaded to his account. Throughout the actual gig he was reported that Russell Brand seemed distracted, one point he had completely lost his place and repeatedly referred to pieces of paper that he brought on stage with him. They were particularly appreciative at the ending as of the show they gave him a Standing Ovation s apparently for several minutes. But this is not only the only show he is scheduled to have the schedule be playing in windsor on tuesday, he scheduled to be playing in plymouth on friday, hes got several shows over the coming weeks and months but with such serious allegations against him there obviously . s about whether these shows will go ahead. There obviously . 5 about whether these shows will go ahead. These shows will go ahead. Thank ou. The European Commission president has laid out an Emergency Plan of action following the arrival last week of thousands of migrants on the italian island of lampedusa. Ursula von der leyen said European Countries had to tackle the Migration Issue together. The italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the influx to the island and to italy had to be stopped it wasnt enough to just redistribute migrants across the eu. Matt graveling reports. In just three days, more than 8000 migrants have arrived on the shores of lampedusa. Thats more than the number of People Living on the italian island. It has led to protests and pressure on the government. Today two more arrivals that local people were happy to welcome italian Prime Minister Georgia Maloney and president of the European Commission Ursula Von Der Leyen. This massive flow of immigrants is something which requires the involvement and the responsibility by everybody to be tackled, because it is going to affect certainly the border, the frontier countries, but it will soon also involve all of the other countries. The Italian Red Cross has said it is currently dealing with about 2500 people at this Reception Centre, designed for 400 arrivals. Today, Ursula Von Der Leyen announced she had a ten point plan to tackle the issue. This includes stepping up efforts against smugglers and providing more legal pathways for migration. We will increase our support to transfer migrants out of lampedusa, and we urge other Member States to use the voluntary solidarity mechanism and transfer migrants out of italy. This mornings visit also included the port of lampedusa, the landing point of many migrants who have left nearby tunisia by boat, arriving here amongst the residents of italys most southerly point. Translation we are angry i because we live, we pay taxes, we do what is needed for living, and at the same time we experience all this reality which is unfair. It is not a condition for living, this one we are experiencing, and i hope this visit wont be just another parade. Protesting residents hope todays visit will help stem the flow as nearly 126,000 migrants have arrived in italy this year, about double the number for the same period in 2022. Matt graveling, bbc news. We can speak now to the journalist seema gupta, who is based in italy and on the island of lampedusa. Thank you forjoining us here on bbc news. First of all, has the reaction been we saw in our reporters package there a lot of hope that this visit could make a change. Do you think it could . ~ ~. V could make a change. Well i think thats what people are hoping, the could . Well i think thats what i people are hoping, the residents here on lampedusa, probably welcoming the idea by Prime Minister maloney to help the administration with an additional 45 Million Euros in help. The situation of the migrants, but some people i spoke to said its interesting that they come today, they see the situation at the ports, but it wasnt like that a few days ago when you had, you know, lines of migrants standing there, people looking very tired, very traumatised. So they are seeing a sort of spruced up situation, even though they did make a visit to that migrant Reception Centre, that centre as we saw in that report being able to house some 400 people, but instead dealing with a few thousand. The red cross of italy has confirmed that they are right now about 1500 or so migrants in that Reception Centre and they are moving as quickly as they come to transfer them to the mainland. And we expect things to go to fairly normal situations in the Reception Centre to it tomorrow, of course that depends on the number of reliable s. We saw some new boats arriving this morning and we are better see conditions, as front x reported, there is Competition Among the people smugglers so there is a lowering of the price in terms of the ticket that people pay to make this incredibly dangerous journey across the mediterranean, and because of that we expect to see an increase in the number of arrivals on the island of lung lampedusa and you are based on the island, and how does the people cooking up a big pot of spaghetti to feed a group of migrants, restaurants giving them free pizzas, many people going to the local church to donate clothes or blankets or whatever they have, or blankets or whatever they have, or they feel they can to help. At the same time though there is a frustration, there is a feeling they are being left alone to deal with this. We are seeing a situation of dirt on the streets and dirt even in the centre, they are concerned about the centre, they are concerned about the ecological impact the deputy mayor said, they brought this issue up mayor said, they brought this issue up with the Prime Minister, concerned about the boats that are used by these migrants, many of them you can still see them aligned in the port around the island that has an impact on the ability to fish, that hasnt Economic Impact as well. So its really a knock on effect. Some activists have suggested perhaps its better to have ships out at sea to move the migrants directly on to more concrete centres on the mainland, and perhaps other parts of europe instead of getting them to come on an island that suggests 20 km2 in terms of area. Before the moment, the arrivals are expected to continue the people here just bracing for themselves for what can be done. The Italian Red Cross say they will continue with the movement of migrants as they come in and they are bringing them to other centres on the mainland. There is a plan to build a similar style centre on the island of sicily as well, and thatis on the island of sicily as well, and that is expected to be up and running hopefully in the month of october. ~ running hopefully in the month of october. , ~ ,. , running hopefully in the month of october. , ~ ,. ,. , running hopefully in the month of october. , ~ ,. , october. The United Nations says the number of People Killed in last weeks floods in libya has reached more than 11,000. Another 10,000 peoplke are still missing. Two dams failed in a storm a week ago today which saw large parts of the eastern city of derna washed away. 0ur correspondent anna foster is there and has this update on the situation. All the time, there are still recovery teams arriving to continue their work here in derna. We know now that more than 10,000 people are still missing, so that attempt to try and recover those bodies is continuing in this area, which you can see just a small bit of the devastation, but this is repeated right the way through the heart of this city. One thing we are starting to see now is the beginning of International Aid arrivals from Different Countries around the world. In the beginning, it was very much local libyans who were doing that job, but various countries, including the uk, have pledged aid and that now is starting to arrive here in derna. Of course, the scale of this catastrophe, as we have been saying, is such that a huge amount of aid is still needed, but it is starting to come in and starting to reach the places that need it. Specialist teams are also starting to come into this area, who can help with the recovery operation, help with finding and identifying the bodies. And crucially, to help those survivors who are still living in the middle of, in many ways, a nightmare. Next to the aftermath of the earthquake in morocco. More than a week on from the quake a group of villages in the high Atlas Mountains one of the worst hit regions have still only received limited aid. Locals say they have yet to get any help from the government, and desperately need tents. The bbc s Ethar Shalaby sent this update from one of the villages. In the village of bierbur, one of the very hard to reach villages here in the province of peshawar, northeast, the epicenter of the earthquake. Im inside a completely destroyed house of rashid, who will tell us how was it on the night of the earthquake . Hes telling me that he was sitting, having dinner with his mother in the kitchen, what used to be a kitchen here. And then suddenly the house crashed on top of them. He actually managed to quickly save his mother and get her out of the kitchen. However, shes having severe fractures in her leg at the moment. So hes going to show me around the house at the moment. This was his bedroom. He says its completely full of rubble, as we can see. And he said that they tried their best to get as much belongings as they could. And as you can see, still some of their belongings are still there. Thats the slippers of his own mother. And as you can see now, these are the family pictures that his mothers picture showing me this grandfathers picture and his fathers pictures as well. This was his mothers bedroom and its completely destroyed. And she used to sleep there. That was the side of the bed where the bed was actually located. Rashid is saying that his mother is currently receiving treatment after staying in a Field Hospital for some two days. But still, she is recovering from a very severe leg fracture. The area of sea ice surrounding antarctica is well below any level previously recorded in the antarctic winter, Satellite Data shows. The map image shows the typical extent of sea ice at this time of year, specifically on the 14th of september. Thats the yellow dotted line, but the actual extent of ice is much less than the median. And as we head into the antarctic summer, much of the existing ice will continue to melt. 0ur Climate Editorjustin Rowlatt has been following the story. Youd see it growing up until 2016, they actual area of sea ice was growing, we think that is because antarctica is a continent of its own surrounded by sea, essentially has its own kind of weather and climate system. But what we are seeing since 2016 and culminating this year, is what seems to be what some scientists are describing as a regime shift, moving toward an era of lower ice cover, and its really significant because the ice and act arctica reflects back the energy from the sun, that keeps the continent cool and cools the water underneath it, it acts as kind of a refrigerator at the bottom of the earth, regulating the earths Weather Systems and keeping the earth cooler. If that begins to change in a significant way, this change in a significant way, this change would be gradual. But if it does begin to change obviously that could have a really Significant Impact on the worlds climate and obviously on weather patterns. Seen an exceptional year for Sea Temperatures, weve seen an all time high for sea surface temperature. This summer in the northern hemisphere. It happened injuly, and normally you would expect it to happen towards the end of the Southern Hemisphere summer. So this is an unusual time to see such a high peak. It was really kind of out of the ordinary. Scientists dont know whether that is what is driving the changes in antarctica, we imagine that seeing the temperature will have a role, but we want to look at all sorts of other factors that may have a role, rising Sea Temperature is a real concern, it takes a lot of energy to heat water up takes a lot of energy to heat water up and it takes a long time for that energy to diffuse. And we are at the moment, the beginning of an el nino year, some Weather Variation that sees temperatures in the tropical pacific rise, pushes them wide, peek to the end of october, november, december this year and that should mean we see similarly high temperatures next year and obviously that may, we may see consequences of the Antarctic Ice going into next year as well, thats certainly something scientists will be watching very closely. Its still quite warm and humid, particularly across the south of the uk. Weve scattered showers and thunderstorms, and well see two rounds of storms through the course of today. Weve already had the downpours in the south west of the country. They are moving through parts of wales and into the midlands. And you can see on the satellite picture, these clumps of cloud here, these Storm Clouds Drifting in from the warm south. I think later on today, well see another round of storms, possibly reaching south eastern areas. But this is what it looks like around the middle of the afternoon, so that Thundery Rain Moving Northwards through wales, into the midlands and into east anglia. The south may actually have some sunshine, but the risk of thunder and lightning continues through this evening and overnight. In fact, you can see this next area of storminess affecting the south east. And actually, therell be plenty of cloud and outbreaks of rain in other parts of the country as well. In the north west, outbreaks of rain, Western Parts of scotland too. And with the air coming in from the south, its a mild night 11 in stornoway, 16 Degrees Celsius in the south. And then, monday is that transition day. Cold fronts, a couple of them, crossing the country. By definition, the air at least, relatively speaking is colder behind the weather front. Its this westerly push of atlantic air. Behind it, i think sunshine and showers for many Western Areas of the uk, as this cold front sweeps across the country. Now, its not particularly cold air because, look at that, temperatures are still around 17 to 20 degrees across england and wales. In Northern Ireland and scotland, closer to 15. Now, midweek, tuesday into wednesday, quite a strong jet stream is going to push an ex tropical cyclone, or ex Tropical Storm hurricane, our way. Some strong winds in association with this area of low pressure. Gale force winds around some coasts, really blustery inland, but because this is an ex tropical system, theres a lot of warm and humid air mixed in it. So thats why, despite the wind and the rain, temperatures in some spots could still nudge up to around 18 or 20 Degrees Celsius. And its a broad area of low pressure, meaning that it will take time for it to sweep across the country. So i think on wednesday, once again, another blustery day, with a spell of heavy rain, as this cold front moves across the country. And again, look at that, 22 in norwich, around about 16 expected in belfast. So a turbulent week on the way. This is bbc news, the headlines.
