This morning, the Foreign Secretary, james cleverly, said the Entertainment Industry as a whole had questions to answer about how it deals with allegations made byjunior staff against big name presenters, because of what he termed the acute differentials in power. Vincent mcaviney has the latest. His behaviour made him no stranger to the tabloids, but this weekend, serious sexual allegations mean Russell Brand has made all the front pages. Perhaps over the course of the evening, some of my accoutrements could make their way onto your body. Once one of the most ubiquitous faces on bbc tv and radio, Building A Career In Hollywood for a time. It is the way these organisations oversaw brands conduct which is now coming under the spotlight, with the Foreign Secretary saying the Entertainment Industry as a whole has questions to answer. There are some real challenges where you have these very, very acute differentials in power, whether that be in the Entertainment Industry, whether that be in politics, and we see this in the commercial world as well. And i think we have to be particularly careful when we listen to the voices of the people who are relatively powerless. July 1st, 2012, was when my rape happened. It was in los angeles that brand met a woman that the investigators are calling nadia. She says they had a brief sexual relationship, but then on another occasion, he raped her. Those speaking out have had their identities described. Im like, no, thats not happening, were not doing that, and i try to get away from him. And at this point, hes grabbing at my, my underwear, and im telling him to get off me, and he wont get off. I was very distraught, trying to get out of the house. Another woman in the uk, alice, said she met and had a brief relationship when he was in his 30s and she was 16 and still at school. She says he later sexually assaulted her. I was pushing him away and pushing him away, and he wasnt. He wasnt backing off at all. So i ended up having to punch him really hard in the stomach to get him off, and i was crying, and he said, oh, i only want to see your mascara run, anyway. The allegations have all been denied by Russell Brand in a video message. I was very, very promiscuous. Now, during that time of promiscuity, the relationships i had were absolutely always consensual. I was always transparent about that then, almost too transparent, and im being transparent about it now. And to see that Transparency Metastasise into something criminal that i absolutely deny makes me question, is there another agenda at play . Hours after the revelations, Russell Brand appeared on stage in london last night for a sold out show, receiving a Standing Ovation. Brand is set to play windsor s Theatre Royal on tuesday, as part of a tour across england over the next few weeks. The bbc has been unable to confirm today whether these performances will still be going ahead. A Production Company says it has launched an urgent internal investigation into allegations of serious misconduct against Russell Brand while he was presenting shows in the mid 2000s. According to the joint investigation by The Sunday Times and channel 4 dispatches, a researcher claimed concerns about Brands Behaviour while working on big brother spin off shows were reported to Production Managers at endemol, the Company Commissioned by channel 4 to produce the programmes. A statement from banijay uk, which bought endemol in 2020, said in light of the very serious allegations raised by dispatches and The Sunday Times investigation relating to the alleged serious misconduct of Russell Brand, while presenting shows produced by endemol in 2004 and 2005, banijay uk has launched an urgent internal investigation and will co operate with any requests for information from broadcast partners and external agencies. We also encourage anybody who feels that they were affected by Brands Behaviour while working on these productions to contact us in confidence. Our reporter tom brada is outside wembley park theatre in london. And, tom, Russell Brand performed there last night . Thats exactly right. On saturday night, Russell Brand von just sold out show to 2,000 fans just hours after those allegations were published. On the night itself, the show started around one hour late, just after a pm. Apparently because of traffic. When mr brand did make it onto stage, he did make an early remark in relation to the Controversy Swirling around him. What he said was, there are obviously some things i absolutely cannot talk about and i appreciate that you will understand. No, that was The One And Only reference made to the allegations. He did of course early on saturday post a video in which he strenuously denied the allegations. Throughout the gig itself, there seems to have been some impact on brand. Apparently, he was quite distracted, at one point, he lost his place. And at several points during the second half of the show, he was seen to be flicking through pieces of paper he had brought onto the stage with him. But it seems his fans when optically phased. They in fact gave a Standing Ovation at the end of the performance, which apparently lasted for several minutes. Interestingly, Russell Brand has several more shows scheduled for the upcoming weeks, upcoming months around the country. But with these serious allegations he is facing, it remains to be seen whether those shows will go ahead. He was doing stand up last night, reminders about Russell Brands wider career. He has returned to the origins of his career, he was in fact doing stand up at the very early stages of his career. He is of course, over the last 20 years or so, a seriously high profile figure in the Entertainment Industry. He has had a lot of mainstream success, but he has along the way also contorted a lot of controversy. He started as a stand up comedian, but in the early 2000s, he really catapulted to become a Household Name after presenting a spin off of the really popular Reality Tv Series big brother. And from that point on, his career went from strength to strength. It was presenting really mainstream award ceremonies, he was even starring in some hollywood films. I should even starring in some hollywood films. Ishould point even starring in some hollywood films. I should point out in recent years, he has slightly deviated from that track and he is now in fact fairly successful youtube, also a fairly successful youtube, also a fairly controversial one. And i point out the controversies because he has never been that far from controversy at many points in his career. For example, in 2001 while career. For example, in 2001while he was working for mtv, he was dismissed from his role after turning up to work the day after the 9 11 terror attacks dressed as a sahm of bin laden and there has been controversy at the bbc as well, as scandal back in 2008 when he said in a series of offensive messages, Voice Messages to andrew sachs, the actor, which led to him being suspended and he eventually resigned. In spite of this, he has remained extremely popular. He has millions of followers across social media, tiktok, instagram and youtube. Of with these extremely serious allegations, he now does have extremely serious questions to answer. With regards to these allegations which Russell Brand denies, tell us about the timeline of events. So the Sexual Assault allegations relate to a seven year period when he was really at the height of his fame. And something which is of interest is the fact he was working for the bbc at the time and for channel 4, he was working for bbc radio six and radio 2 and on various projects full off and big brother. He has come of the bbc has given a statement in relation to the news. I will read that out, they say, bbc Russell Brand wait for a number of organisations, which the bbc is one. As is well known, Russell Brand left the bbc after a Serious Editorial Beach in 2001. We will always listen to people if they come forward with any concerns on anyissue come forward with any concerns on any issue relating to any issue involving anybody working at the bbc past or present. He left the bbc after that serious editorial breach, he was also working for channel 4 and they said, channel 4 is appalled to learn of these deeply troubling allegations, including behaviour alleged to have taken place in programmes made for channel 4 between 2004 and 2007. We are determined to understand the full nature of what went on. We have carried out extensive documents such as found no evidence to suggest the alleged incidents were brought to the attention of channel 4. We will continue to review this in light of any further information we receive. So clearly, the bbc and channel 4, both organisations may come under pressure to investigate further what was going on at the time. Tam. Pressure to investigate further what was going on at the time. Tom, thank ou so was going on at the time. Tom, thank you so much the president of the European Commission, Ursula Von Der Leyen, has visited the italian island of lampedusa this morning, after thousands of migrants from north africa arrived this week outnumbering the islands residents population. Ms von der leyen said European Countries had to tackle the Migration Issue together. The italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, said the influx to the island and to italy had to be stopped, it wasnt enough to just redistribute migrants across the eu. Matt graveling reports. In just three days, more than 8,000 migrants have arrived on the shores of lampedusa. Thats more than the number of People Living on the italian island. Its led to protests and pressure on the government. Today, two more arrivals that local people were happy to welcome italian Prime MinisterGiorgia Meloni and president of the European CommissionUrsula Von Der Leyen. This massive flow of immigrants is something which requires the involvement and the responsibility by everybody to be tackled, because it is going to affect certainly the border, the frontier countries, but it will soon also involve all of the other countries. The Italian Red Cross has said it is currently dealing with about 2,500 people at this reception centre, designed for 400 arrivals. Today, Ursula Von Der Leyen announced she had a ten point plan to tackle the issue. This includes stepping up efforts against smugglers and providing more legal pathways for migration. We will increase our support to transfer migrants out of lampedusa, and we urge other Member States to use the voluntary solidarity mechanism and transfer migrants out of italy. This mornings visit also included the port of lampedusa, the landing point of many migrants who have left nearby tunisia by boat, arriving here amongst the residents of italys most southerly point. Translation were angry because we live, we pay taxes, we do whats needed for living, and at the same time, we experience all this reality which is unfair. Its not a condition for living, this one were experiencing, and i hope this visit wont be just another parade. Protesting residents hope todays visit will help stem the flow, as nearly 126,000 migrants have arrived in italy this year, about double the number for the same period in 2022. Valentina furlanetto is a journalist for radi024 in italy and has been reporting from lampedusa. She gave her response to todays press conference. The words from von der leyen were important, butjust words. She has seen the centre of migrants today and it was a different centre from what i have seen in the last three days. Because now there are 1,500 migrants inside. And as you said, there were 8,000 people. So there were problems with food, water, they didnt manage to sleep inside the centres. So they were left outside, on the floor. It is completely different. What she has seen today is a kind of 5 star hotel. Its really different from what we have seen in the last few days. She said that she has got a plan of ten points to help italy, but we have already. The points are just the same as she is saying again. The United Nations says the number of People Killed in last weeks floods in libya has reached more than 11,000. Another 10,000 people are still missing. Two dams failed in a storm a week ago today which saw large parts of the eastern city of derna washed away. Our correspondent anna foster is there and sent this update. All the time, there are still recovery teams arriving to continue their work here in derna. We know now that more than 10,000 people are still missing, so that attempt to try and recover those bodies is continuing in this area, which you can see just a small bit of the devastation, but this is repeated right the way through the heart of this city. One thing that we are starting to see now is the beginning of International Aid arrivals from Different Countries around the world. In the beginning, it really was very much local libyans who were doing that job, but various countries, including the uk, have pledged aid and that now is starting to arrive here in derna. Of course, the scale of this catastrophe, as we have been saying, is such that a huge amount of aid is still needed, but it is starting to come in and starting to reach the places that need it. Specialist teams are also starting to come into this area, who can help with the recovery operation, help with finding and identifying the bodies, and crucially, to help those survivors who are still living in the middle of, in many ways, a nightmare. The area of sea ice surrounding antarctica is well below any level previously recorded in the antarctic winter, Satellite Data shows. The map, the image shows the typical extent of sea ice at this time of year, specifically on the 14th of september. Thats the yellow dotted line, but the actual extent of ice is much less than the median. And as we head into the antarctic summer, much of the existing ice will continue to melt. For more, lets speak to professor martin siegert. Thank you so much for your time on bbc news. We show the maps, but give a context as to how bad this year is and why it is so bad. And why it is so bad. Yes, it is really unusual, and why it is so bad. Yes, it is really unusual, surely. And why it is so bad. Yes, it is i really unusual, surely. Antarctic seaice really unusual, surely. Antarctic sea ice grows in the winter, it is very cold there of course. And we are thinking talking about a very thin layer of ice, About A Metre or so, and it melts away in the summertime, sometimes the storms come and take it away. But it is vital to the planetary Climate System and that is because the surface of it is very white and reflective. So when the sun comes around in the antarctic summer, that Solar Radiation will reflect a bounce of the surface of the sea ice and go back out into space, so we wont see any net warming as a consequence of that. But if the sea ice isnt there, like at the moment, then that white reflective surface is replaced by a dark surface. On the surface of the planet starts absorbing Solar Radiation, rather than reflecting it, so the ether will head heat up as a consequence. We have known this process has been going on in the arctic in the north for some time and thats why the arctic is warming at about four times the rate of the rest of the planet. But until recently we havent really seen that same type of process happening in the antarctic. Unfortunately, since 2017, the sea ice levels at this time of year are getting less and less and this particular year is the lowest ever, so we are now starting to consider the antarctic is starting to behave a little bit like the arctic and that will be a terrible thing if it continues for the planet. Bordering that come at the ice flows into the ocean and it does so is very large floating slabs of ice, they are called ice shelves. The polar explorers refer to them as barriers because they could crunch their way through the very thin sea ice, but they could not get their way through the floating ice shelves so they are barriers. They back force to the ice sheet to prevent it flowing into the ocean. You dont need to melt the ice, you just have to flow it from the land into the ocean and under the archimedes principle, the sea level has already happened. Because since the 1970s, we have had data that suggest that. In the antarctic, the sea ice has been quite variable, but since 2017, we are seeing year on year low sea ice levels during the summertime and thatis ice levels during the summertime and that is what concerns us. The reason it is happening, of course, is because of Global Warming and the reason Global Warming is happening of course is because of burning of fossil fuels. Of course is because of burning of fossilfuels. So unless of course is because of burning of fossil fuels. So unless we stop burning fossil fuels as quickly as we possibly can, and that will be by 2050, by mid century, 28 years time, we are going to be seeing more of the sort of stuff, unfortunately. Weve scattered showers and thunderstorms and we will see two rounds of storms through the course of today. Weve already had the downpours in the south west of the country. They are moving through parts of wales and into the midlands and you can see on the satellite picture, these clumps of cloud here, these storm clouds, drifting in from the warm south. Later on today, well see another round of storms possibly reaching south eastern areas. But this is what it looks like around the middle of the afternoon, so that Thundery Rain Moving Northwards through wales into the midlands and into east anglia. The south may actually have some sunshine, but the risk of thunder and lightning continues through this evening and overnight. In fact, you can see this next area of storminess affecting the south east. Actually, there will be plenty of cloud and outbreaks of rain in other parts of the country as well. In the north west, outbreaks of rain, Western Parts of scotland too. And with the air coming in from the south, its a mild night 11 in stornoway, 16 Degrees Celsius in the south. Monday is that transition day. Cold fronts, a couple of them crossing the country. By definition, the air at least, relatively speaking is colder behind the weather front. Its this westerly push of atlantic air. Behind it, sunshine and showers for many Western Areas of the uk, as this cold front sweeps across the country. Its not particularly cold air because, look at that, temperatures are still around 17 to 20 degrees across england and wales. In Northern Ireland and scotland, closer to 15. Midweek, tuesday into wednesday, quite a strong jet stream is going to push an ex tropical cyclone, or ex Tropical Storm hurricane, our way. Some strong winds in association with this area of low pressure. Gale force winds around some coasts, really blustery inland, but because this is an ex tropical system, theres a lot of warm and humid air mixed in it. So thats why, despite the wind and the rain, temperatures in some spots could still nudge up to around 18 or 20 Degrees Celsius. Its a broad area of low pressure, meaning that it will take time for it to sweep across the country. So i think on wednesday, once again, another blustery day, with a spell of heavy rain, as this cold front moves across the country. Again, look at that, 22 in norwich, around about 16 expected in belfast. So a turbulent week on the way. This is bbc news.
