the atlas mountains, just outside marrakesh where this earthquake has devastated the area. we are going to look at the 620 summit now. the 620 summit has agreed on a joint declaration, including a statement on the russian attack on ukraine. a bbc correspondent says it has been substantially watered down from the one issued last year. the statement calls on all states to refrain from the threat or use of force, but it does not mention russian aggression. kyiv has responded in the past few minutes by describing the 620 statement as "nothing to be proud of". the term "war against ukraine" has also been changed to the more neutral "war in ukraine". india's prime minister modi also proposed including the african union as a permanent member of the bloc — part of his drive to include more of the voices of the global south at the top table of international diplomacy. prior to this, south africa was the continent's only member. mr modi also found time to pose for a bilateral photocall with uk prime minister rishi sunak, with a post—brexit trade deal on the cards. this is what mr sunak had to say about the deal. well, prime minister modi and i had a very warm and productive discussion on a range of different things. with regard to the trade deal, you know, there's a desire on both of our parts to see a successful trade deal concluded. the opportunities are there for both countries. but there is a lot of hard work still to go and we need to work through that, as we will do. but i think there's also opportunities for us to deepen our relationship in lots of different areas, and he and i talked about that as well, whether it's in defence and security, and education and research, all sorts of things that we could do more together. and it's important we do. india, as this 620 is showing, is going to be one of the most important geopolitical actors over the next years and decades, it's important for the uk to have a close relationship with india. and prime minister modi and i talked about all the different ways in which we can strengthen and deepen that partnership. that was rishi sunak. the british prime minister. we can talk to philani mthembu, who is the executive director of the institute for global dialogue, a foreign policy thinktank in south africa. thank you very much forjoining us. in terms of what this means for the continent of africa, given that mr modi is very keen to include the african union in, how do you feel about this, how do you think people are going to react to the statement? i think it is a welcome initiative. i think it is a welcome initiative. i mean, this has been initiated from within the african continent and i think certainly india supported that initiative, alongside other members of the 620. it will enhance the continent's voice, but it will also enhance the continent's ability to coordinate on its international partnerships, while also putting development issues back on the centre. i think of 620 deliberation. so it is quite an important initiative for the continent. find initiative for the continent. and when ou initiative for the continent. and when you say — initiative for the continent. and when you say development issues, what will they be, what is the important issues that countries in africa will want to highlight to the rest of the 620? i africa will want to highlight to the rest of the 620?— africa will want to highlight to the rest of the g20? i think whether you are speaking — rest of the g20? i think whether you are speaking about _ rest of the g20? i think whether you are speaking about climate - rest of the g20? i think whether you are speaking about climate issues i rest of the g20? i think whether you are speaking about climate issues or you are definitely talking about climate finance and sustainable finance to the continent, you definitely are talking about a changing international development finance landscape, where the continent has been consistently pushing other parts of the world to provide finance at a concessional rate for the continent. but you also about sustainable infrastructure projects, cross—border infrastructure that enhances the continent's ability to trade amongst itself. so these are quite important issues that should be at the centre of the 620. in the last few years, to the agenda 2030, the un *s agenda for sustainable development, the continent has to be at the centre of those initiatives. so i think it will certainly enhance that voice. 0k, will certainly enhance that voice. ok, and just briefly, what do you think will come of this? it is clearly a very symbolic move. what do you think is going to come of this in terms of practical issues and practical changes in the way that africa deals with other countries that top the diplomacy table? i countries that top the diplomacy table? ~ ., ., , , table? i think what it does is it enhances _ table? i think what it does is it enhances the _ table? i think what it does is it enhances the continent's - table? i think what it does is it - enhances the continent's strategic autonomy. there are a lot of key stakeholders within the 620 that african countries deal with at a bilateral level. and so having them all there, the 620, and having the aeu consistently attending these meetings will certainly be important in that regard. south africa used to be the only african country in the 620 and it generally consulted with the african union before these summits. but having the african union at the summits at a formal level certainly ensures issues like agenda 2063, which is the continent's development blueprint, will be kept on the agenda of the 620. ., ~ , ., , will be kept on the agenda of the 620. ., ~ _, y . ., will be kept on the agenda of the 620. ., y . for namibia in saint—etienne. there were seven different try scorers for the the italians. they only had a nine—point lead at the break, but ran away with it in the second half. tomasso allan had a perfect record with the boot as well, kicking every conversion and a penalty. 52—8 the final score, a bonus point win that lifts them to the top of pool a above the hosts france, who beat the all blacks in the opening match of the tournament. the number one team in the world ireland conceded an early try against romaniabut they are now heading for a huge win in bordeaux. two—time champions australia take on georgia at the stade de france later and england face argentina in marseille, american teenager coco 6auff will face aryna sabalenka from belarus in the us open final later on saturday. 6auff is appearing in her second major singles final after losing at the french open last year. in the men's draw, daniil medvedev beat world number one carlos alcaraz in four sets and will face novak djokovic. it is a repeat of the 2021 us open final which medvedev won to claim his only grand slam title. he is always better than the previous time he plays. for example, i beat him in the us open final, he beat me in a great match. carlos beat him in wimbledon, he beat him in cincinnati. so novak is going to be his best version on sunday and i have to be the best ever version of myself if i want to try to beat him. a lot of football on saturday as well. england will be looking to make it five wins out of five in euro qualifying when they face ukraine in poland later. the match is being played there because of the war in ukraine. harry maguire, who is struggling to get a game for manchester united, and jordan henderson who has left liverpool for the saudi pro—league both start. manager 6areth southgate is expecting the majority of the crowd crowd to be behind their opponents. well, we know, of course, hundreds and thousands of ukrainians living here, so we're expecting a very passionate and partisan support for their team. we're used to playing in that sort of environment. we're, of course, respectful of the occasion, but ourjob is to come here and attempt to win a football game. so it's, for us, making sure that we keep the emotions in check and make sure that we're focusing on ourjob. ukraine sit second in group c, with six points from three fixtures. head coach sergei rebrov is taking charge of the national side forjust the fourth time and says his job is made all the easier because of the mindset of his players. it's very easy to work because you don't need to motivate the players. they are most of the time motivating themselves. they are watching news, they are talking with the people who are in ukraine, who are fighting for us. and for me, of course, it is a very big responsibility, but i am enjoying to work here and i am enjoying to helping for our country. about 45 minutes until kick—off in wroclaw between ukraine and england, these are the scenes a short time ago, lots of ukrainians proudly wearing their colours of yellow and blue. let's hearfrom a couple wearing their colours of yellow and blue. let's hear from a couple who made the journey from ukraine to see their team play. we came to support ukraine, support our national team and tomorrow, we are just going back. how long has it taken you to travel here? more than one day. like, one day. we are football fans and i am supporting our national team since my childhood. and i believe that our team will win today, so we will do everything, we will do our best to support them. more tries have gone in ireland, 75-8, more tries have gone in ireland, 75—8, they are now leading romania, not long left to play, keep on top of that match and the rugby world cup on your bbc app, or the bbc sport website. thank you for that update. the later sport. let's cross live to delhi, with our south asia correspondent yogita limaye. we spoke to somebody in south africa who was talking about the significance of the african union being included now, but it has been an eventful day at the 620 summit? yes, of course, that is one of the big top lines from here, the african union being made a permanent member of the 620, something that india and the prime minister narendra modi has been strongly advocating for over the past couple of months because they believe in multilateral groupings and institution should be more representative and fair. but we also had a joint leader statement that came out and all eyes were on what the paragraph regarding the war in ukraine said. and if you look at it, the wording of that paragraph in strength, it is significantly less strong than what was in the paragraph which was released after the bali summit last year, so it didn't even make a mention of russia. it talked about state sticking to the un charter are not violating the territorial integrity, political independence and sovereignty of other states. it also said that the threat of use and the use of nuclear weapons is inadmissible. but if you compare that to the wording last year, last year as well, the language was sort of split in between because there was no consensus between all of the countries on their stance on the war in ukraine. however, it did say that most countries deplore what they described then as russian aggression in ukraine. find described then as russian aggression in ukraine. * , ., ., in ukraine. and in terms of what this means _ in ukraine. and in terms of what this means broadly _ in ukraine. and in terms of what this means broadly as _ in ukraine. and in terms of what this means broadly as well- in ukraine. and in terms of what this means broadly as well for. this means broadly as well for india, it is a big moment for narendra modi and what he wants to achieve for india in terms of the world stage and diplomacy. that's riuht. i world stage and diplomacy. that's right- ithink— world stage and diplomacy. that's right. i think what _ world stage and diplomacy. that's right. i think what india _ world stage and diplomacy. that's right. i think what india has - world stage and diplomacy. that's right. i think what india has done | right. i think what india has done quite successfully, it has turned essentially what is an annual summit that happens every year, it is a rotating presidency, but it has turned it into a mega event to showcase its position in the world and say, we can be the voice of developing countries. advocating for the african union to be included and for that to be fomented today is a big win on that front. but there is also a domestic audience he's talking to in the capital delhi in india. we are going into an election year. if you travel across the streets of delhi, there are posters with the face of narendra modi over it and there will be pictures of him meeting these world leaders and, sorry, it has become windy suddenly here in delhi! he is saying to voters, india's prominence is growing on the global stage and the person who has achieved that for india is prime minister narendra modi, that is the message to the domestic audience in india. we will let ou domestic audience in india. we will let you take — domestic audience in india. we will let you take shelter _ domestic audience in india. we will let you take shelter if _ domestic audience in india. we will let you take shelter if the - domestic audience in india. we will let you take shelter if the weatherl let you take shelter if the weather is disrupting the situation. also, in terms of what the uk is doing and trying to achieve as well on the sidelines, that is clearly getting a lot of attention here. prime minister rishi sunak is very keen to establish that trade deal and future relationships with india. is that going to be something that is focused on at all domestically, would you say? i focused on at all domestically, would you say?— focused on at all domestically, would you say? i don't think it has been much _ would you say? i don't think it has been much of _ would you say? i don't think it has been much of a _ would you say? i don't think it has been much of a headline - would you say? i don't think it has been much of a headline here - would you say? i don't think it has been much of a headline here in i been much of a headline here in india. of course there has been talk of the trade agreement and the talks going on on that front between prime minister sunak and prime minister modi and the two countries, but i think prime minister sunak had tempered expectations before coming here because he said about the trade deal, we want it, but we are not going to rush it, it's important it is done properly rather than quickly. initially, there were some reports we would see progress soon after the 620 summit on the free trade agreement between india and the uk, but i think those expectations have certainly been tempered. what prime minister sunak continues to say is india will have an important role to play in the years and decades ahead so the relationship with india is crucial for the uk. relationship with india is crucial for the uk-_ for the uk. also, 'ust one last auestion for the uk. also, 'ust one last question on b for the uk. also, 'ust one last question on the _ for the uk. also, just one last question on the absence - for economy in africa. has that absence be felt quite a bit, given clearly russia is not present either? —— has that absence been felt. i russia is not present either? -- has that absence been felt.— that chose not to attend the summit. what we do know is just ahead of the summit, india and china had a row over maps that were released by china that india says shows a state in india as well as disputed territory between india and china as being part of the territory of china. then china said after india objected that india should stay calm and there was not really any explanation. but after that, the chinese delegation confirmed president xijinping that, the chinese delegation confirmed president xi jinping would not be attending. so there have suddenly been questions raised here about the growing tensions between india and china, since even attributing the strong support of india to the african union is accounted to china *s influence in the african continent. accounted to china 's for an enemy state understood to be around. members of the public had been in touch with police overnight, having seen daniel khalife in the chiswick area. police conducted what they described as "intensive searches" here. they included officers stopping and searching vehicles, inspecting car boots, and asking local residents for identification. in a short statement, the force thanked the public for their support throughout the investigation. from the 620 meeting in india, the prime minister echoed that sentiment. it's good news that we've recaptured the person concerned. as people already know, thejustice secretary's initiated an inquiry into the circumstances of his escape and that work will continue, but this is obviously very welcome news and my thanks to the police, but also to the public. daniel khalife was on remand at wandsworth prison, pending a trial for terror offences, due to start in november. khalife denies the charges. much of the investigation focused on his daring escape from the kitchen at wandsworth prison, hiding under this delivery van. it's thought he travelled strapped underneath the van, until crawling out a mile or so later. it was there he was first spotted. police had offered a reward of up to £20,000 for information that led to his arrest. ellie price in chiswick. reporting on the prisoner daniel khalife who has been found in west london, stay with us on bbc news. hello there. if, like me, you're finding it too hot and humid, relief is on the way, but not for most of us until after the weekend. so it stays very warm, very muggy, there will be thundery showers and there are warnings out from the met office. more details on our website. but again, we'll have another day with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees celsius. so again, the record is broken. today looks like it might well be the hottest day of the year so far, just getting a little bit ahead of thursday's 32.6 degrees celsius. widely warm, very warm, infact, and humid. temperatures not quite so high in the north and west, purely because we have this weather front approaching, so more cloud, bringing rain into the western and later northern isles, showers ahead of it. and this afternoon, because we have that mix of the heat as well, some home—grown downpours, torrential downpours continuing well into the evening. but quite well scattered. they could just cause some flash flooding locally. and then, even though they will ease away for a time overnight, we have more moving in from the south, pushing into the south and west. and again, just increasing that humidity. so another really close night and uncomfortable for sleeping, i should imagine, for quite a few. even further north, the humidity stays with us, that means for the great north run, not ideal conditions, with that high humidity. the increasing chance of a thundery shower as well for those running into the afternoon. so take on lots of water, if you can. so the shower risk tomorrow perhaps a bit further north than today. some torrential downpours, lots of lightning with those showers. and we have our weather front in the north and west. but in—between, lots of sunshine, still very warm and humid. so temperatures might not be quite widely as high as today, but it's still humid and muggy. perhaps still in east anglia and the south east, 31, 32 degrees celsius. through the evening and overnight, thundery showers move northwards and eastwards. the weather front is on the move as well, and it's behind that weather front where it is a little bit less humid, a fresherfeel for the north and west of scotland. and as we move through the course of monday and tuesday, i'm hopeful about the end of tuesday, that we will start to feel that slightly fresher air reaching southern and eastern areas. then we're back to business as usual, a more unsettled looking picture. this is bbc news. the headlines — rescuers dig for survivors after a powerful earthquake in morocco kills more than 1,000 people, with hundreds more injured. the quake struck around 45 miles south of marrakesh. hospitals in the region have seen an influx of patients, and are appealing for blood donations. police have arrested 21—year—old daniel khalife, who escaped from a prison in london four days ago. the former british soldier, suspected of terror offences, was caught in chiswick, west london, after sightings in the area. world leaders are meeting at the 620 summit in delhi, where the african union has been invited to join the group as a member. they also issued a joint declaration, calling on all states to refrain from the threat or use of force, but fell short of mentioning russia.
