He was detained in the chiswick area, after confirmed sightings there overnight, including calls from detained in northolt. The former soldier whos 21 was in Wandsworth Prison awaiting trial, accused of trying to spy for an enemy state, understood to be iran. His family had urged him to give himself up. Ellie Price Reports members of the public had been in touch with police overnight, having seen Daniel Khalife in the chiswick area. Police conducted what they described as intensive searches here. They included officers stopping and searching vehicles, inspecting car boots, and asking local residents for identification. In a short statement the force thanked the public for their support throughout the investigation. From the 620 meeting in india, the Prime Minister echoed that sentiment. Its good news that we have recaptured the person concerned. As people already know, thejustice secretarys initiated an inquiry into the circumstances of his escape and that work will continue, but this is obviously very welcome news and my thanks to the police but also the public. Daniel khalife was on remand at Wandsworth Prison pending a trial for Terror Offences due to start in november. Khalife denies the charges. Much investigation focused on his daring escape from the kitchen at Wandsworth Prison, hiding under this delivery van. It is thought he travelled strapped underneath the van until crawling out a mile or so later. It was there he was first spotted. Police had offered a reward of up to £20,000 for information that led to his arrest. Weve just heard from the Metropolitan Police, who have given some more details about how Daniel Khalife was arrested. Commander Dominic Murphy says the public played an integral role in it. Tell us a bit about the capture today. We understand daniel was captured 10 1i1am. One of the officers engaged in an operation to look at daniel, a plainclothes officer saw him on the Canal Towpath on a push bike, and was able to pull him off the bike. Was there any resisting . As soon as he was arrested, Daniel Khalife cooperated with the officer. In terms of the intel and him acting alone, is that still the case, or do you know of him having any help . That is part of an ongoing investigation, so we are going to follow every lead that we can. We have been really focused in trying to find daniel. With the public and media support. Now we have found him, he is back in custody, we will investigate how he came to escape from Wandsworth Prison. And support any charges that might follow. In terms of the manner, in terms of the capture, how many officers are we talking, and why hone in on chiswick . What is the change there . Last night and during the night, we conducted an Intelligence Led Search of the premises in the richmond area. We had calls from several members of the public in various locations which give us a confirmed sighting of Daniel Khalife in the other. So we flooded the area with resources, supported by the met police, and a whole host of resources, including our support from the Metropolitan Police, and we were this morning to look at him at 10. 41 on that towpath. Where is he now . He is in custody at a Police Station in west london. Youre thanking the public for coming forward, the reward and those calling in, will the reward be used, in terms of the money . We have had the most amazing support from the public here, well over 100 calls, some very useful information. This has been team effort from Police Officers and staff from across the Metropolitan Police, but the public have been an integral part of that, as have the media we will assess each of those applications as they come in. We have not had any claims yet. Lastly, do you think it was a quick capture, what are your views on that . And how long it took an assessment of that is really a matter other people. I know that from the moment it was reported to the police we found a very substantial amount of information, it has been 75 hours from the moment of his escape to the time of his capture, and a huge effort has gone into it. Every time the Police Received a tip off or potential citings, the operation moved in that direction. Last night, the police told us they had credible calls that had come in saying that they had seen Daniel Khalife in the chiswick area, in particular a Shopping Mall in chiswick. That is where the police and counterterrorism officers conducted their search overnight and this morning. It was a Plainclothes Police officer who finally caught Daniel Khalife on a canal path. In terms of his escape, Daniel Khalifes, it is i his escape, Daniel Khalifes, it is being described as something out of hollywood, it feels quite an intricate sort of planned route, as you asked to come under there, we are still in the dark about whether he was actually alone. I are still in the dark about whether he was actually alone. He was actually alone. I asked the auestion he was actually alone. I asked the question to he was actually alone. I asked the question to the he was actually alone. I asked the question to the commander. He was actually alone. I asked the question to the commander. Whether Daniel Khalife was acting alone. The commander has said that they are investigating all lines of inquiry. There were speculations that he might have had assistance, the police would not be drawn on that. That will be something that will be investigated, as to how he managed to get out of Wandsworth Prison, a category a prison in south west london, we believe he strapped himself underneath a Food Delivery Truck that had arrived at the prison, it left on wednesday morning, underneath it was Daniel Khalife. He was then spotted about one mile away having got from underneath this food truck and then headed 5. 5 miles, chiswick is from Wandsworth Prison. Some fair distance in the days he had absconded. Ultimately the police said 75 hours for his recapture was quite significant and thanked everybody involved, mainly the Police Officers, members of the public and all the agencies involved. There are a number of investigations now going on as to how and why he managed to escape, and that question whether he had assistance from inside the jail. We assistance from inside the ail. We heard assistance from inside the jail. We heard yesterday there was a sighting in wandsworth by a well known roundabout in wandsworth in, a cctv piece of footage, a member of the public said they had seen him, clearly that was then seen a sort of a Starting Point for the police to work on. That was just last night. It has been quite quick work in terms of tracing that route and tracing Daniel Khalife to chiswick. Absolutely. They did not know if he was working alone, had someone come to pick him up, nobody knows. He is being interviewed as we speak at a west london Police Station but what is evident, the police were out, searching local parks in wandsworth meticulously searching parks, people double cards, people asked for id in various areas, overnight helicopters overhead searching for Daniel Khalife. The 21 year old former soldier who was awaiting trial on a number of terrorism charges. More than 1000 people are now known to have died in a powerful earthquake in morocco. Hundreds more have been injured, and the authorities are calling on residents to donate blood. The quake struck in a remote area in the atlas mountains, around 45 miles south of the popular Tourist Destination, marrakesh. The uk says its ready to help morocco in any way that is needed. Charlotte wright has this report. The horrifying moment a powerful earthquake hit morocco. Cctv shows people running for safety as buildings begin to crumble in marrakesh. Elsewhere in the city, diners frantically flee a restaurant. Outside the historic kutubiyya mosque, dust rises from the tower, prompting fears it might collapse. Marrakesh is 45 miles from the epicentre in the atlas mountains. Those in the city said it was terrifying. The floors were violently shaking, the walls were shaking, things were falling off, shelving. I just didnt even know what to think. I then went into slightly more open space in my main bedroom and just completely collapsed to the floor because you couldnt stand everything was shaking so much. The Quake Struckjust after 11pm yesterday. 0vernight, there were outages to the power, phone lines and internet, with crowds left trying to sleep on the streets. Translation the force and intensity of this earthquake was felt in our building almost three times. People went out into the street just after this total panic, and there are families who are still sleeping outside. South of the epicentre, the search for survivors. Digging through the rubble of collapsed buildings. In chichaoua, to the west, rescuers worked through the night, with reports of families still trapped and many more injured. Some were taken to hospital for treatment. In the daylight, the extent of the destruction in marrakesh is clearer, including to parts of the medina, a unesco World Heritage site, where some are left picking through what is left of their homes. Theres nowhere for us to go, there is nowhere for us to stay, she says. As residents begin to assess the devastation, World Leaders have pledged their support, amid fears the death toll will rise further yet. Charlotte wright, bbc news. Ive been speaking to our former morocco reporter nora fakim. Shes been telling me what sort of tasks authorities face now. Authorities have told me that their priority is to find those under the rubble. There has also been a call for people to donate blood, to provide shelter and health facilities. But we will know more later today. Its a popular Tourist Destination and their Regional Tourism delegation reported quite a significant investment this year. What effect will this have on how health care responds to the sort of event . This will affect the Tourism Industry immensely. Already after the pandemic, the country had to rebuild the sector and last year, there were around ten million tourists visiting marrakesh. But it is not the first disaster which the country has had to rebuild to attract tourists once again. In 2011, i reported on the bomb blast which killed 15 tourists in a cafe in the square. So this country is prepared to do anything to rebuild the sector once more. And we are seeing pictures now of people sat outside and there was a message yesterday by the authorities not to re enter buildings because they were afraid of a second tremor. In terms of hospitals, they are having to cope with the wounded. What is going on in that situation of having to basically essentially serve these people, an unnamed number of injured and also sadly, people that have lost their lives as well . Well, authorities have told me it is still the early stages yet. Their priority once again is to find those under the rubble and thats why they are encouraging people to donate blood because we know that hospitals are overpopulated. Nora fakim, ourformer morocco reporter. Earlier i spoke to Marrakech Riad owner peter mercer who escaped from the third floor of his building during the quake. Yes, it was surreal because you dont practise for these things. And ive lived through an earthquake before, but i live on the third floor of the building and itjust started to shake, almost like a Washing Machine on the spin cycle when it suddenly gears up. But it violently shook the building and you just think, ive got to get out of here. So ijust literally ran out of the door, so going down three flights of stairs, just imagining the building is about to collapse on me. It was terrifying. And i got. Sorry, carry on. And when i got downstairs to the street, the street was full of people, but im english in morocco and the moroccans are speaking amongst themselves. And i did think for a minute, did that only happen to me . Because no one was actually saying, theres an earthquake. 0bviously, no one is speaking in english, even in french, but then someone told me in french, that was an earthquake. Ok, so i didnt imagine it. But it was frightening. And did you go back into your building, or did you stay outside for the night . Where did people sleep . Were Hearing Reports they all slept outside. Yeah, i stayed outside for several hours. I was following reports on the internet. There were three aftershocks, each one less powerful. So i took comfort from that, and they advised that there probably was not going to be another major one. But i stayed outside for three hours and then i did go back to my apartment and i went to sleep. But a lot of people stayed out all night in gardens, in open spaces, because they were scared to go into their homes. A lot of people live in Apartment Buildings three, four, five storeys high, and you dont want to be on the fifth floor if you have to get out quickly. And what is the situation now . Like you say, the advice is there probably isnt going to be a second earthquake. Are people feeling confident, or are they understandably still on edge about what to do next . Yeah, people understandably are on edge, as you say. But life does go on. Im fortunate because i wasnt injured and no one i know was injured. In the mountains and villages closer to the epicentre, there is a lot of damage and injured. But people. Cafes are open and museums and gardens are open, tourism is happening today. It feels a little bit strange perhaps to be enjoying the day, but life is going on here. In terms of the villages in the mountains, we dont know exactly the extent of the damage at the moment, we are Hearing Reports and sadly that death toll has increased quite significantly from the early hours of this morning our time. Are you hearing more reports about that and the rescue effort . Do you get much information about what is going on information about what is going on in those remote areas . Here there is a lot of Media Outlets in morocco, helicopters flying into the mountains from bases around here, assisting with a lot of rubble that needs to be moved, from what i understand, in these little villages. The homes they have often built from mud and so on, they perhaps dont have good foundations, perhaps dont have good foundations, perhaps why they have suffered the most damage. Is there much Relief Effort with people affected in marrakesh . Clearly buildings have been affected where you are, is there a help at hand, for example, for those people who might not be able to stay in their houses tonight or last night or in the weeks to come . I or last night or in the weeks to come . , ~. , come . I dont know if there are 0 tions come . I dont know if there are options where come . I dont know if there are options where people come . I dont know if there are options where people can come . I dont know if there are options where people can go i come . I dont know if there are options where people can go toj options where people can go to sleep, people have been advised in certain areas not to spend the night in their homes but i do not know if anyplace has been made available for people to like campout on a camp bed, it could be the case, i do not have that information. That was peter mercer. And you can read more about that story and the live developments on our live page. More than 1,000 people now have died. The g20 summit of World Leaders has agreed a joint declaration, which includes calls for a durable peace in ukraine. The text, at the summit in india, says all states involved in the conflict must refrain from the use of force for territorial gain. But theres no reference to russian aggression, and ukraine says the g20 has nothing to be proud of. From delhi, our political editor, chris mason, reports. Waiting for the world to arrive. The indian Prime Minister, narendra modi, is the host here. The Stumbling Block for the g20 has long been russia and its war in ukraine. Vladimir putin isnt here, its his foreign minister Sergey Lavrov instead. 0thers walking the red carpet, President Biden and rishi sunak. The g20 have agreed a joint communique with very Strong Language about russias illegal war in ukraine. Something i said on my way here that i was keen to highlight was the impact that russias war is having on food prices, notjust at home in the uk but around the world, impacting millions of vulnerable people. Get togethers like this give leaders the chance to catch up. But the truth is the g20 doesnt agree on russias invasion of ukraine. The hosts, india, are effectively neutral on it. But the leaders have agreed, on paper at least, that one country invading another shouldnt happen. And mr modi acknowledged the Global Impact the war has had. He said there was a huge crisis of a lack of trust in the world and claimed the war had deepened this trust deficit. When we can defeat covid, he said, we can also overcome this crisis of mutual trust. Adding, it is time for all of us to move together. But the only way a collection of countries like the g20 can give even the loosest sense of moving together on an issue like russias invasion of ukraine is by adopting rather vague language. And the language in this years declaration is sufficiently vague that the section about the war doesnt even mention russia. And when you compare that with what was said last year, there has been a hardening of positions and the words have been watered down. For the Prime Minister and narendra modi, the backslapping for the cameras was certainly fulsome. Both hope to turn this warmth into a uk india trade deal in the coming months. Chris mason, bbc news, in delhi. Hundreds of Emergency Workers and soldiers continue to evacuate people from villages and towns affected by major flooding in central greece. Theyve been using boats and helicopters, which are also being used to supply cut used to supply cut off settlements with food and drinking water. Parts of larissa have been inundated, and work is ongoing to reinforce embankments of the pineios river. Ten people are known to have died in the flooding though some villages have yet to be reached by the emergency services. 0ur Correspondent Sofia Bettiza is in larissa one of the towns worst affected. Theres a Big Search And Rescue operation this morning in larissa in central greece. You can see behind me, two people have just been rescued and they are getting to safety. We have seen all Morning Volunteers getting on dinghies like this one, on boats, on canoes, and looking for people who are still stranded, stuck on rooftops, stuck on their balconies. This Rescue Operation is extremely complicated. Entire villages are without power. Hundreds of people are still stranded. Roads are damaged. And there are some villages that are entirely submerged by water. And that means that the authorities have been unable to reach some of the worst affected areas. There are several people still missing and the fear is that the death toll could go up. The greek Prime Minister, kyriakos mitsotakis, said that greece is facing an unequal battle with nature, and that hes going to do everything humanly possible to help with the emergency. Today is provisionally the hottest day of the year so far in the uk. The met office said a temperature of 32. 7 celsius was recorded in heathrow, in west london. It beats the previous record set on thursday. However, it may be the last hot day for some areas of england and wales, as there are warnings of possible thunderstorms. A reminder of our top story. More than 1000 people are now known to have died in morocco when an earthquake struck a sparsely populated region in the atlas mountains. Entire villages are reported to have been flattened, with families trapped under the rubble. Read more on our website and stay with bbc news. Hello there. If, like me, youre finding it too hot and humid, relief is on the way, but not for most of us until after the weekend. So it stays very warm, very muggy, there will be Thundery Showers and there are warnings out from the met office. More details on our website. But again, well have another day with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees celsius. So again, the record is broken. Today looks like it might well be the hottest day of the year so far, just getting a little bit ahead of thursdays 32. 6 degrees celsius. Widely warm, very warm, infact, and humid. Temperatures not quite so high in the north and west, purely because we have this Weather Front approaching, so more cloud, bringing rain into the western and later northern isles, one or two showers ahead of it. And this afternoon, because we have that mix of the heat as well, some home grown downpours, torrential downpours continuing well into the evening. But quite well scattered. They could just cause some Flash Flooding locally. And then, even though they will ease away for a time overnight, we have more moving in from the south, pushing into the south and west. And again, just increasing that humidity. So another really close night and uncomfortable for sleeping, i should imagine, for quite a few. Even further north, the Humidity Stays with us, that means for the great north run, not ideal conditions, with that high humidity. The increasing chance of a Thundery Shower as well for those running into the afternoon. So take on lots of water, if you can. So the shower risk tomorrow perhaps a bit further north than today. Some torrential downpours, lots of lightning with those showers. And we have our Weather Front in the north and west. But in between, lots of sunshine, still very warm and humid. So temperatures might not be quite widely as high as today, but its still humid and muggy. Perhaps still in east anglia and the south east, 31, 32 degrees celsius. Through the evening and overnight, Thundery Showers move northwards and eastwards. The Weather Front is on the move as well, and its behind that Weather Front where it is a little bit less humid, a fresherfeel for the north and west of scotland. And that, as we move through the course of monday and tuesday, im hopeful about the end of tuesday, well start to feel that slightly fresher air reaching southern and eastern areas. Then were back to business as usual, really, a more unsettled looking picture. Live from london, this is bbc news. Rescue workers continue to dig for survivors after a powerful earthquake in morocco kills more than a thousand people, leaving hundreds more injured. World leaders at the G20 Summit In Delhi have agreed a joint declaration, calling on all states to refrain from the threat or use of force. And escaped prisoner Daniel Khalife, suspected of Terror Offences, is arrested by police in london, following a four day search. Hello and welcome, im catherine byaruhanga. We start in morocco, where state tv says more than 1,000 people have been killed in the earthquake that struck late on friday night. Hospitals in the region have seen an influx of wounded people ,
