The metropolitan police say they have received a number of sexual offence allegations following the recent claims against Russell Brand. In a short statement, the police said all the allegations were historical, and are said to have occurred in london and elsewhere in the country. They are already looking into a possible offence in 2003. Russell brand has denied all the claims made against him in a recent media investigation, which include rape and Sexual Assault. More than a million Hospital Appointments in england have been cancelled because of the long running strikes by nhs staff. The first strikes began in december last year and last week saw the first ever strike byJunior Doctors and consultants at the same time. 0ur Health Correspondent Sophie Hutchinson reports. Tom nash takes great care when walking. He has an ear injury thats affected his balance. Whenever i am upright, walking or running, the world spins. Ive become a lot more sensitive to the soles of my feet because i have to feel the ground as i walk. Hes waited more than two years for an ear operation, but its been cancelled three times due to the strikes. Its certainly urgent for me. And im sure Everybody Else who is due an operation would say the same thing. Yes, now, after 28 months, its urgent i want it done. The latest figures showjust how disruptive and risky the pay dispute between the government and nhs staff has been for patients over the past ten months. Over a million Hospital Appointments have been cancelled to date, along with more than 60,000 community and Mental Health appointments having to be rescheduled. The majority of this disruption is due to doctor walk outs, 22 days of Strike Action byJunior Doctors and six days by consultants. Hospital chief execs and others have urged the two sides to reach an agreement, but the last time they spoke was more than 100 days ago, and neither seem set to back down. What we have done is accepted in full the independent pay review bodys recommendation, so for your average junior doctor, that means 8. 8 , or 10. 3 for newly qualified doctors. And for consultants, 6 plus very generous pension changes. So the pay matter is closed. But doctors are fighting for above inflation rises. Tonight, their union, the bma, said its a no brainer to invest in the future of the nhs workforce rather than waste further money refusing to pitch a credible pay offer. So for patients, the pain is set to continue. Next week, Junior Doctors and consultants will stage a three day strike their longest co ordinated walk out to date. Sophie hutchinson, bbc news. The former nurse and serial killer lucy letby, who is serving a whole Life Sentence for murdering seven babies and attempting to kill six others, is to face a retrial for the Attempted Murder of a baby girl. The jury at the trial, which ended last month, failed to reach a verdict on that charge. A provisional date for letby s retrial has been set forjune next year. 0ur Correspondent Danny Savage was at court today. Shes serving a whole life term for murdering seven babies and attempting to kill six others. Lucy letby will now face a retrial on one charge the jury who convicted her couldnt decide on. Did she attempt to kill a girl referred to in court as baby k . She was being treated at the countess of Chester Hospital in february 2016. Letby appeared via video link today from her prison. She spoke only to confirm her name and that she could see and hear proceedings. Her barrister told the court she maintained her innocence on all charges. Lucy letby will face a retrial here in manchester next summer. The jury in her trial also couldnt decide on five other charges of Attempted Murder on these wards. She is not facing a retrial on those allegations. That has left some families upset. Its disappointing that the cps are not going to move forward with a retrial on five of the charges. I think that we need to start looking now about the other avenues available to those families. So its really important that we find answers for these families as to what happened to their children. The Crown Prosecution Service says. Lucy letby was cleared of two charges of Attempted Murder and has lodged an appeal against her convictions. But she is set to face a jury again. Danny savage, bbc news, manchester. Ukraines Special Forces say 3a russian officers were killed in a Missile Strike on the navy s headquarters in occupied crimea on friday. They say the commander of the Black Sea Fleet was among those who died, although they are yet to produce evidence to support their claims. Russia said at the time that only one serviceman was missing. 0ur Correspondentjames Waterhouse is in kyiv. This would be quite a strike by ukraine, if its proved to be true . That is right. I think it is quite the strike anyway, to be honest. We have seen a lot of russian missiles landed in ukrainian cities that moscow cant control. So the site of a western supplied Missile Landing in the heart of sebastopol in occupied crimea, that is against the grain, lets put it like that. We have tried to get in touch with their Special Forces spokesman. He didnt mention admiral Viktor Sokolov by name. The commander of the Black Sea Fleet, nor did he provide any evidence that the claims we are hearing today. So we dont yet know for sure that kyiv claim of 3a Senior Officers losing their lives in an attack, whether that is true or not. Now there is a chance ukraine acted on intelligence and took out a sizeable chunk of russias Command Structure but i think there are two more obvious reasons as to why we are seeing ukraine carry out more targeted strikes inside crimea. They directly help ukraines continued counteroffensive further north, where the games are far more marginal and less obvious. And secondly, should ukraine liberate crimea, as it wants to do, and should ukrainian troops enter crimea, it is a big if, then there will be an element of having to win hearts and minds in a peninsula that has been occupied for almost, more than nine years. Has been occupied for almost, more than nine yew than nine years. 0k, many thanks. James waterhouse than nine years. 0k, many thanks. James waterhouse there. Ukraine is now the most heavily mined country in the world and clearing the mines is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. Specialist British Army Bomb Disposal teams or sappers have been training their ukrainian counterparts on how to clear the hundreds of thousands of explosive devices littering the countryside and slowing ukraines offensive operations. 0ur defence correspondent Jonathan Beale reports from poland, where the training has been taking place. Imagine doing this under enemy fire, trying to find a deadly hidden device which could also kill you. Its what these experienced ukrainian engineers have been doing for the past year. Now, in neighbouring poland, honing their skills with the help of british sappers who faced a similar threat in the heat and dust of helmand. And its failed to function. Machine gun fire. This is what theyre facing. Ground littered with russian explosives. Ukraines now the most heavily mined country in the world, and its slowing their advance. Russias laid hundreds of thousands of mines across ukraine, scattered over an area the size of florida. In some places, the mine fields are ten kilometres deep, and in just one square metre, there could be as many as five mines. Sappers like den are now being targeted by russian forces, so they mostly have to conduct their work at night. And theres simply not enough of them. Would you describe being a sapper in ukraine at the moment as being the most dangerousjob in the world . Yes, absolutely. A lot of them being killed by mines, by russian artillery, because theyre working on the front line . Yeah. Have you lost many friends . What message would you like to send the west . Keep going. We need your help. Is that because youre worried that the west wont keep going . Because we wont make it by our own, so. We should make sure the team is in cover in case the worst thing happens. The uk has given Ukraine Hundreds of mine detecting kits. The hope, that with this training, it will make a difference. Were fellow soldiers at the end of the day and we share experiences throughout the course of our experiences and their experiences, and we train together. And you think youve given them the skills to stay alive . Weve added to them. But the clock is ticking on ukraines offensive. And there are still hundreds of thousands of russian mines in their way. Jonathan beale, bbc news, poland. The army has been stood down in london after it was called in to support the metropolitan police when hundreds of officers stepped back from firearms duties. The officers did so after a colleague was prosecuted for murder in relation to the death of chris kaba a man who was shot dead in south london last year. The england and Wales Cricket board has pledged to make the game more inclusive after a damning report into the sport earlier this year. The independent commission for equity in cricket said inequality based on race, gender and class were widespread and deep rooted, and made more than a0 recommendations, most of which have been accepted. Among the reforms announced today are a new independent regulator and boosting investment in the womens game. Gatwick airport will cancel around 82 departures over the coming week because of high levels of sickness, including covid, among air Traffic Control staff. The largest number of cancellations is expected to happen on friday, with 33 departures affected. Easyjet passengers will be the most affected, with ba and ryanair also cancelling flights. Rishi sunak is under growing pressure to confirm the future of the hs2 rail project. Today he refused to comment on speculation that he plans to scrap the section of the line between birmingham and manchester. The former conservative chancellor, george osborne, said doing so would be a gross act of vandalism. A decision is expected this week ahead of the conservative party conference. Our analysis editor ros atkins takes a closer look at this huge scheme, which has been bedevilled by delays, Cost Increases and cuts. In 2009, the then Labour Government introduced an idea for a new North South High speed rail line. Its an investment that you are making in fundamentally improving the connections between our major centres of population and our Major Economic centres, too. Three years later, the Coalition Government confirmed hs2 would go ahead and referenced the victorians. But as a result of todays announcement, the Railway Revolution they started is happening again. This would involve a route reaching from london to birmingham and onto leeds and manchester. The cost was initially estimated to be £37. 5 billion. In return, we were told hs2 would create jobs, growth and prosperity and deliver critical capacity on our railways. But the plan has changed. In 2015, a connection to Heathrow Airport was deemed unnecessary. In 2021, the link between the East Midlands and leeds was cancelled, replaced with localised rail investment. And in march, the government said, to save money, it was delaying when Euston Station in london would be ready for hs2. Then theres manchester. This week, the Prime Minister was asked if hs2 will still go there. Well, im not going to comment on that type of speculation but what i would say is were absolutely committed to levelling up and spreading opportunity around the country. 0n manchester, mr sunak wouldnt say and the context here is spiralling costs. The latest estimate is £71 billion. After recent inflation, that will be higher now, which the government is well aware of. We do have to respond to the budgets in particular. Weve been hit notjust by A Coronavirus but also by the war in ukraine and i think any responsible government looks at that and says, does this still stack up . The war and covid have pushed up costs but as well as that, three years ago, the National Audit office had already noted that the Department For Transport and hs2 limited underestimated the complexity of the programme and, as that complexity continues to reveal itself, 11 years after the tories compared their ambition to the victorians, theres this warning, from labours mayor of manchester. If you just pull the plug on that rail infrastructure, youre basically leaving the north of england saddled with victorian infrastructure for the rest of this century. No plug has been pulled yet but hs2 in its current form requires renewed Political Support and so far, rishi sunak hasnt provided it. India continues to emphatically deny dramatic allegations by canada that it had a hand in the murder of a canadian sikh injune. But indian media is now reporting that delhi does want to put renewed pressure on some foreign sikh activists naming seven britons among 19 people whose Indian Properties are set to be confiscated. It comes at a time when some british sikhs are concerned about how they are being viewed. Heres our religion editor aleem maqbool. Whenjustin trudeau accused india of involvement in the murder of this canadian sikh, he might have hoped for unequivocal public support from canadas friends. A lot of your allies have been silent on this. I wonder what your reaction to that is. But that hasnt come even from the uk. Leaving Prime Minister trudeau a lonely figure, and british sikhs upset. Some already felt they had reason to feel aggrieved. Take the case of jagtar singh johalfrom dumbarton. Hes a well known sikh rights activist, and in 2017 went to india to get married. But there he was bundled into a car and has been in prison ever since. He says hes been tortured and is frequently marched to court, accused of extremist offences which he denies, though he is yet to be tried. There have been six years of protests. The Un Working Group publically called for mrjohal s immediate release, but the British Government has yet to do the same. Jagtar s brother says hes impressed by canadas stance. The canadian Prime Minister stood up for his citizen, heard about what has happened to one of his citizens, and on his own he has went into parliament, spoke to the opposition and said what he did. I dont see rishi sunak doing that. The Prime Minister has said he wants jagtarjohal s case resolved as quickly as possible. But Narendra Modis administration has long demanded britain do more to counter a resurgent movement of sikhs in the uk supporting a breakaway homeland one they want to call khalistan. The uk governments former Faith Engagement Advisor agrees. It was majorfinding in a report he published earlier this year. I think the British Government have been for many, many years naive in not addressing the pro khalistan extremists and sikh extremists that have been hiding in plain sight in the uk. British sikh groups across the spectrum expressed outrage for what they see as activism is being characterised as extremism. They feel that somehow the government is kowtowing to delhi. But this is undoubtedly a difficult tightrope to walk for the uk, for whom india is such an important strategic partner, particularly on security and trade. Aleem maqbool, bbc news, at the foreign office. The leader of the Liberal Democrats sir ed davey says his party is making the nhs its priority for the next general election. Speaking to the bbc from the partys conference in bournemouth, sir ed said he would introduce policies including free Personal Care, but abandoned a longstanding party pledge to put a penny on income tax. Take our free Personal Care offer, which is really important. Thats going to cost five billion up front. But its going to save a lot of money too, because it will enable people to get discharged from hospital more quickly, so they can be cared for in their home. Its going to then free up spaces in care homes and that will really save, we think, about £3 billion. So some of that five billion will be clawed back and help our nhs and help our care homes. The strike which has brought hollywood to a standstill may be about to come to an end. The Writers Guild says its come to an agreement albeit a tentative one. The strike began back in may and has cost the california economy billions of dollars. But theres no sign of a resolution yet of the dispute with actors which has brought a large part of the british Film Industry to a halt. Heres david sillito. Hey, barbie. Barbie could there be anything more american . And yet it was largely made in the uk. The same goes for marvel s the avengers. Dracarys. And also game of thrones. Britains studios are a major part of the hollywood production line, and the current strikes have shut down production on both sides of the atlantic. The union bectu says half its freelancers are now out of work. And for people like riz, here on the right, who develops camera technology. We did a lot of r d on star wars rogue one with our technologies. The contrast between 2022 and 2023 is stark. We had a boom and it was insane. Everyone was busy, and now, because of the strikes, its come to another lockdown, really. Were impacted on it because productions are not working and therefore were not working. 0ur Technologies are sitting there waiting for the. Seeing how can we, kind of like. When will these talks resolve . The uk has in recent years enjoyed a studio building boom, but the empty car parks are a good clue as to how its going at the moment. Everyone that i know in the industry is out of work and, personally, ive been out of work for. On and off, on and off for about a month, month and a half. If it was any other industry, thered be questions asked and people would be on the streets protesting. And while there are many issues in this dispute, at its heart is a battle over how to share the rewards of a rapidly changing industry. And for actors like ana mulvoy ten, a member of sag, the Screen Actors Guild, a screen role doesnt even guarantee youll be able to pay the rent. What we see on tv in terms of hollywood is that its just people are Making Millions and thats everybody and its just all fun and games. And 87 of the sag members arent making £20,000 a year. And while todays announcement by the Writers Guild of a tentative agreement suggests there may be Movement Towards a resolution, for thousands here in the uk, it cant come soon enough. David sillito, bbc news. And our correspondent nada tawfik joins us from new york, where many of the us Entertainment Networks are based. So, resolution for writers, but with actors still on strike, the industry will go on being affected. That is absolutely right. You will have late shows like the one behind me at cbs, that will return, providing a bit of normality for american viewers on television, but they will still be seeing reruns of scripted series that rely on actors, films have been paused and they will continue to be so until there is a resolution with the Screen Actors Guild. Keep in mind, they went on strike injuly, joining the writers, the first time both have done so since the 1960s. In all of the time the studios have not engaged in negotiations with the Screen Actors Guild so there is hope now that given the resolution, the tentative deal, that could help speed things along, and there is lots of pressure because unless that happens soon, it could put into jeopardy next years box office season. For the Screen Actors it is similar concerns to the writers, but they are also asking for a 2 share of profits for the cast of popular shows. For a 2 share of profits for the cast of popular shows.
