M v hr who try and give up will find against them are perseverance our perseverance. Those who survive our heroes and they are now conveying things, passing it forward and on the future generations and our children will also have to become those who will also convey that message, they will become the witnesses of the witnesses and never give that role up because, thanks to what they will learn, they will become those who have the power of knowledge. They know that we do not have the right or the privilege of forgetting and the stories of our victims is a story that is a vibrant, vital one and a crucial one that must be passed on. This will be awe inspiring to these children because our children will have to protect and defend democracy and
humanity that is so fragile and delicate and one must fortify it time and time again so we are uniting here today once again in order to draw that inspiration and award it to our youths so they will find in their heart, the courage so that on the day they need to, they will be able to stand strong and defend our values and they too will be able to say through knowledge that everything they saw and experienced and understood, never again. Thank you, president macron. Germany sought to break british resolve through brutal bombings but the United Kingdom remained steadfast. British forces, together with those of other allies, drove the nazis back through north africa and europe and liberated german concentration camps. It is my honour to invite his Royal Highness the prince of wales to deliver his remarks. Survivors, president , your majesty
is, your excellencies, ladies and gentlemen, it is a particular honour, although one of the most solemn kind, to be present here today on behalf of the United Kingdom to commemorate all those so tragically lost. To come to this sacred place, yad vashem, a memorial and a name, is to be faced with that to which no name, no words and no language can ever possibly do justice. The magnitude of the genocide that was visited upon the jewish people defies comprehension and can make those of us who live in the shadow of those indescribable
events feel hopelessly inadequate. The scale of the evil was so great, the impact so profound, that it threatens to obscure the countless individual human stories of tragedy, loss and suffering of which it was comprised. That is why places like this and events like this are so vitally important. For many of you and forjewish people across the globe, those stories are your stories, whether you witnessed or somehow indie would the appalling barbarity of the holocaust personally or whether it touched your lives through the experience of your lives through the experience of your loved ones or through the loss
of pa rents, your loved ones or through the loss of parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, or other family you were never able to know, but we must never able to know, but we must never forget that they are also our story. A story of incomprehensible inhumanity from which all humanity can and must learn. For that and evil cannot be described does not mean that it cannot be defeated. That it cannot be fully understood does not mean that it cannot be overcome. And so it is of particular significance that we should gather here in israel, where so many of those who survived the holocaust
sought and found refuge. And build a new future for themselves and this country. In the same way, it has been a singular privilege throughout my life to have met so many Holocaust Survivors who were welcomed to the United Kingdom and who began new lives there. Contributing immeasurably to the welfare of our country and the world in the years that followed. I have such inspiring memories of remarkable people who somehow survived both auschwitz before moving to britain after the war. They are as a wonderfully talented
cellist, she co founded the English Chamber orchestra, which i am proud to be patron for the past 43 years. On herarm, she to be patron for the past 43 years. On her arm, she based the number by which tyranny had sought to make her less tha n which tyranny had sought to make her less than human. Yet through her music, she reminds us of the greatest beauty of which we are capable. Over the years, she has shared her story bravely and powerfully, determined that some good might come from the unspeakable evil she indie would and overcame. From the horror she brought harmony, healing and hope. Just as each life lost sta nds healing and hope. Just as each life lost stands for all the millions who died, each inspirational story such
as that stands for the strength of spirit, the unparalleled courage, the determined defiance of their very best of humanity when confronted with the very worst. For my own part, i have long drawn inspiration from their selfless actions of my dear grandmother, Princess Alice of greece, who in 1943, in nazi occupied athens, saved ajewish 1943, in nazi occupied athens, saved a jewish family by taking them into her home and hiding them. Applause. My my grandmother, who is buried on the mount of olives, has a tree planted
in her name here at yad vashem and is counted as one of the righteous among the nations. A fact which gives me and my family immense pride. Ladies and gentlemen, almost a lifetime has passed since the horror of the holocaust unfolded on the european continent and those who bore witness to it are sadly ever fewer. We must therefore commit ourselves to ensuring that they stories live on to be known and understood by each successive generation. Anita said there is a risk that the holocaust will be placed under a glass bubble, just
like the napoleonic wars or the thirty years war. But if we dont make the connection between memories of past atrocities and the present, there isnt any point to it. She is, it seems to me, absolutely right. The holocaust must never be allowed to become simply a fact of history. We must never cease to be appalled nor moved by the testimony of those who lived through it. Their experience must always educate and guide and warn us. The lessons of the holocaust are relevant to this day. 75 years after the liberation of auschwitz, hatred and intolerance still lurk in the human heart, still
tell new lies, adopt new disguises and still seek new victims. All too often, language is used which turns disagreement into dehumanisation. Words are used as badges of shame to mark others as enemies, to brand those who are different as somehow deviant. All too often, virtue seems to be sought through verbal violence. All too often, real violence. All too often, real violence ensues and acts of unspeakable cruelty are still perpetrated around the world against people for reasons of their religion, their race or their beliefs. Knowing as we do the darkness to which such behaviour
leads, we must be vigilant in discerning these ever changing threats. We must be fearless in confronting falsehoods and resolute in resisting words and acts of violence. We must never rest in seeking to create Mutual Understanding and respect. We must attend the earth of our societies so that the seeds of division cannot ta ke that the seeds of division cannot take root and grow. And we must never forget that every human being is in the image of god. And even a single human life is like an entire universe. Applause. The holocaust was an appalling jewish tragedy but it was also a universal human tragedy and one which we compound if we do not heed its lessons. On this day, in this place, and in memory of the millions who perished, let us recommit ourselves to tolerance and respect and to ensuring that those who lived through this darkness will forever, as in the words of the prophet isaiah, bea as in the words of the prophet isaiah, be a light unto the nations to guide the generations that follow. Applause. Applause. A warning to World Leaders over
hatred, that intolerance and hatred still lurk in the human heart, at that event in israel. Lets go now tojerusalem that event in israel. Lets go now to jerusalem and speak that event in israel. Lets go now tojerusalem and speak to our correspondent. The prince, as many of the speakers, talking about the lessons a re of the speakers, talking about the lessons are still to be learned. We had from president macron as well about the fears of the rise of anti semitism. About the fears of the rise of antisemitism. Yes, the prince was actually quite eloquent about this the scale of the evil of the holocaust, that even if you dont understand it or cant describe it, doesnt mean it cant be defeated. He gave quite a strong call for the importance of remembering to make sure that Something Like this doesnt become just another page in history but is actually something that informs action now, action to try and find tolerance and respect
for each other. Mentioning also his grandmother, who protected jews, saved jewish lives in nazi occupied athens, so that was a personal touch. There were other leaders who talked about the scourge of anti semitism. I think president macron was one of those who spoke about it most strongly. He talked about it most strongly. He talked about the scourge of anti semitism, racism and xenophobia, that it is growing and that it needs to be combated. That is one of the themes. The organisers want to look to the past but they also want to use this asa past but they also want to use this as a platform to address what they see as the growing threat of modern day anti semitism. See as the growing threat of modernday antisemitism. And that isa modernday antisemitism. And that is a growing threat, which Benjamin Netanyahu is a growing threat, which Benjamin Neta nyahu referred to, is a growing threat, which Benjamin Netanyahu referred to, which is stopping a Nuclear Armed iran. That is quite political, isnt it . I was struck by how political some of the speeches were. He described iran as
one of the most anti semitic nations one of the most anti semitic nations on the planet. That would be disputed by some of the members are sitting in the audience, perhaps. But he took this venue to make that kind of statement, when he and the United States are at the forefront of trying to confront iran on its policies and the nuclear issues, as well as its regional policies, and called for a united, resolute front to co nfro nt called for a united, resolute front to confront iran. The Vice President of the us, mike pence, did the same. So they incorporated this element of theirForeign Policy so they incorporated this element of their Foreign Policy into this event, which is recognising the holocaust and the current threats, saying iran is part of that current threat. Thank you very much. Two other news, and beijing authorities have cancelled new Year Celebrations this weekend as a precaution as fears of the spread of
a deadly new virus grow. Two more chinese citizens in wuhan have been put into lockdown. They are 70 kilometres away from wuhan, where 11 million residents have been told to stay put. 25 people have died and 600 more have been infected, most of them in wuhan. Its position in the middle of chinas High Speed Network is one of the reasons the virus has been able to spread so quickly. And the river is more than 600 kilometres long and is used to ship food, products and for Public Transport. Is in virtual lockdown. All Public Transport has been closed. The last
flights in our already half empty. Train services were also eerily quiet. Normally the new year rush would mean you cant get a ticket. Translation we are at the very epicentre of the virus. Maybe it is best not to travel. I am confident that our government has this situation well in hand and it will be quickly brought under control. Now, wherever you look, people are Wearing Masks, some people are cancelling their trips, and there is a lot of concern. And what is really made people Pay Attention to this Health Problem has been the shutdown of wuhan. The wuhan shutdown has made this emergency suddenly very real for people right across china, triggering memories of the 2002 outbreak which led to more than 600 deaths. Neighbouring cities are also stopping Train Services as well as closing bars and restaurants. These
drastic measures have been welcomed by the world health organisation. Their sequencing was then quickly but more importantly, it was a shade immediately. That is why korea, japan, thailand were able to diagnose the new coronavirus quickly. Medical teams are diagnose the new coronavirus quickly. Medicalteams are preparing foran quickly. Medicalteams are preparing for an influx of patients with coronavirus, which causes pneumonia. Staff at this wuhan hospital are worried. Translation we are worried about oui translation we are worried about our work here and get even more worried when we see the news everyday. I always say to it is ok as we are well protected but i was just saying that you keep them calm. We are afraid and worried. But as long as we are here, our own sense of duty will help us do the job. We are still all young ourselves so we feel lost and afraid. Our family members are worried too. But as long
as we wear the protective clothing, we will be ok. Travellers had already left wuhan before the transport shutdown was in place by the five day incubation period means they may have carried the virus to other cities and countries not knowing they had already been infected. Inside a metropolis quarantine from the outside world, medical teams are bracing for this emergency to get much worse before it gets any better. For more on the lockdown and what it is like inside wuhan right now, we can hearfrom is like inside wuhan right now, we can hear from someone who flew in on the last flights entering wuhan yesterday before the quarantine was implemented. Ijust got back after spending the day Walking Around the city. I got here yesterday night on one of the la st here yesterday night on one of the last flights from beijing, around midnight, a few nights before the quarantine of the city was implemented. As you said, wuhan is
iiow implemented. As you said, wuhan is now totally isolated from the rest of the country. No trains, no flights, no private cars on the highways. So the city at the moment is quite empty. Most of the locals in the shops are closed. All the people that can are mostly staying at home. The roads are quite empty. The very few people were Wearing Masks as their main protection. The quarantine started at 10am. The Public Transportation in the city, there are no set ways and very little taxis. Its very hard to move around. The government has been very serious about tackling or isolating the city right before the chinese
new year, which would turn into 3000 million trips over the next week and wuhan is one of the stops of the train system, so they decided to make that push. Their people are very supportive of the government action. They think the government are doing the best they can, they are doing the best they can, they are doing the best they can, they are doing a greatjob. Overall, the people i have spoken to are very optimistic. Most of them have at the memory of going through the sars epidemic in 2002 and they think this is not as serious and the government is not as serious and the government is more prepared. In china, it is a stronger country and more prepared. Cases of coronavirus have now been confirmed in thailand, japan, south korea, the United States, and in the
last few hours vietnam. Matt hancock discussed the virus in the house of commons today. He said the risk of the virus spreading in the uk is low but precautions are being taken. There are no confirmed cases of this new infection in the uk so far. We have been closely monitoring the situation in wuhan and have put in place precautionary measures. Our approach at all times has been guided by the advice of the chief medical officer. Since yesterday, Public Health england officials have been carrying out enhanced monitoring of direct flights from wuhan and all passengers on direct flights from china will receive information on what to do if they fall ill. Joining me now is a seniorfellow for Global Health at the council for foreign relations. He has written about the previous sars epidemic in china. This unprecedented lockdown involving millions of people in china, is that the right thing to do . I am not that sure. Provided
that lockdown is effective, so they will be nobody coming out, there is still this issue of whether those infected people in other parts of china, whether these people are going to develop into local communities outbreaks. That would be the worst scenario we could face. What is different between this virus and the sars virus as far as you are concerned . Is this less dangerous or because it appears to be a little milder, that may mean it will spread more easily. The initial estimate assessment was that this virus was less dangerous than sars but now i think the update assessment now, it seems to be increasingly clear this isa seems to be increasingly clear this is a virus that is transmittable
among human beings and also it is virulent and a leading biologist even predicted that this virus is going to be more dangerous than sars. According to his estimate, they could be able to 60,000 cases in china. Given that we are looking at something within enqueue pini incubation period of five days, we are going to be chasing our tail on this, arent we . Thats true. There is evidence suggesting that symptomatic people, that means there are people who carry the virus but do not show the symptoms, could also share the virus, so the screening measures would be not as effective if this happened. Looking at whats
happening in china, this could not happening in china, this could not happen at a worst time of year, when you are looking at one of the biggest migrations of people in a year anyway. Thats true. I think this is causing notjust the quarantine, in wuhan, china now seems to be shut down. People cancelled their meetings, their plans to go to visit friends or relatives, and they prefer to stay at home. Relatives, and they prefer to stayathome. The understanding here is that people coming off flights at Heathrow Airports who have been at attend affected areas are being given leaflets. Is that enough . think that will help but it is not enough. You have people who carry the virus and travel to uk. Professor, thank you so much for your time. My pleasure. A56 year old man has been found guilty of wounding with intent after attacking a peace officer with a machete. The injured the officer after they stopped his van in leyton, east london. Tell us what has happened. The scars are still visible on the Police Officers head from their savage machete attack. He was on patrol and it should have been a routine traffic stop last august. It turned into, he said, a fight for his life. The van driver, he refused to get out of his vehicle, and there was a scuffle. The driver started shopping at the officers head with a rusty two foot long machete. He said he was acting in self defence because of the officer had attacked him. The officer reeled back and he managed to fire his taser. The first
shot missed. He said he thought at that point he would die unless he fired a second shot. He managed to incapacitate the driver and called for help. A short time ago, the jury found the driver guilty of wounding with intent but they found him not guilty of an alternative charge of attempted murder or possessing an offensive weapon. In a victim impact Statement Read out to the court a short time ago, the officer said, this incident has changed my life but hopefully not the way i police. Thejury but hopefully not the way i police. The jury was also told that the driver had a previous conviction for another machete attack back in 1997. You are watching afternoon life. Lets catch up with the weather. Storm gloria, this has been here
since the weekend, can you believe it . It is now moving through the French Riviera, but look at how much rain we have seen. We have got red warnings out for the really swollen rivers in perpignan and also in toulouse. It really is looking quite severe there. And yet more snow across the pyrenees. The french alps at the moment are releasing after of fresh snow but in the pyrenees they have had another three quarters of a metre so i understand snow depths at the top. He is using his hands, bless him. They are having to get rid of a lot of snow. Two metres of snow. This is going to be branded one of the worst storms of the century. It is not uncommon but they had stones like this in 1986, 1992,
2008, so they can see these pretty slow moving areas of low pressure, but this is wednesday. That was the rain and snow across the pyrenees. The emphasis of gloria is now shifting along the French Riviera. It will weaken a little but we are expecting it potentially to bring some heavy rain into next weekend across italy. It looks like venice is going to get it again. Yes, unfortunately, but for us, how you. But it is a bit of a gloomy one. Iam you. But it is a bit of a gloomy one. I am trying desperately to stay optimistic because it is january. There was terrible fog this morning. This was york, beautiful today. But most of us waking up to this. Cloudy skies today and it will stay with us u nfortu nately. Skies today and it will stay with us unfortunately. Light winds, nothing to mix it up. Into the afternoon, temperatures around seven, 10 degrees. Rain in the north west, albeit light and patchy. That will
sink south across scotland and into Northern Ireland, before reverting further north again. Overnight, largely frost free. Temperatures staying above freezing. If we get a few holes in the cloud, may be some frost forming. But it is business as usual again tomorrow. Some fog early on, i never cloudy, gloomy story, and in the far north west we have got some rain here, but i am trying to stay optimistic. At least it is dry. Again, another dry story across the country. Then, as we move into the country. Then, as we move into the start of the weekend, the first signs of a change. Their winds are going to pick up. Saturday not looking too bad. The best day of the weekend. With the wind picking up from the south west, that might rake up from the south west, that might rake up the cloud across england and wales so we might see some sunny spells as well. Some rain just flirting again with western fringes of scotla nd flirting again with western fringes of scotland and may be in Northern Ireland for a time but it will stay
largely dry with temperatures around 9 degrees, but then that cold front sweeps its weight steadily south and east and the nature of the cold front is dragging in the colder air behind, so send a it is all change. We are going to see the wind strengthening, rain pushing in, some of it heavy at times. It will grind toa of it heavy at times. It will grind to a halt in the south east corner on sunday afternoon. Behind it, sunny spells and scattered showers with a risk of that cold in. That chow was a little bit more wintry in the far north west. And then it is a case of trying to make the most of those days because into next week, we are back to square one, more wet and windy weather. This is bbc news. Our latest headlines dont leave the area. Millions of people are told to stay put as two more cities in china are placed in lockdown to contain the virus. An investigation shows seven babies may have died unnecessarily at an nhs trust. World leaders gather in jerusalem to mark the 75th anniversary of the auschwitz death camp. The holocaust was an appalling jewish tragedy but it was also a universal human tragedy and one which we compound if we do not heed its lessons. We will need to reduce
oui its lessons. We will need to reduce our Meat Consumption by a fifth if environmental targets are to be met. And coming up, no more free flights for emotional support peacocks sport now on afternoon live with jane dougall. Big news ahead of the start of the six nations with one of scotlands key men not involved in their opening match at least . Initially be thought this might be an injury that had sent the fly half home from the scotland camp but it has emerged that he has been disciplined for a breach of tea m been disciplined for a breach of Team Protocol. He has been sent home but he will play no further part in preparations for scotlands 6 nation opener. A big
blow for scotland. He has 46 caps for scotland. And also in last seasons six nations, part of the match against england. Whether he plays in the rest of the tournament 01 plays in the rest of the tournament or not we dont know. The head coach coached at glasgow warriors who ultimately will be down to him. Defeats for Heather Watson and harriet dart means that on day four of the tournament that british hopes in the singles draw are now over. It was always going to be a tall order for both players today in their second round matches. Dart was taking on the wimbledon champion simona halep and, despite a battling display in the second set, the fourth seed
did enough to get over the line. As for watson, she was beaten in under an hour by 16th seed elise mertens. John watson was watching in melbourne. For the second year in a row, no british players remain in the third round of the singles here at the Australian Open. It was always going to be difficult for harriet dart up against simona hallett. She made a realfight of against simona hallett. She made a real fight of it, trying to come back into it in the second set. As for Heather Watson, she was the second remaining britain left in the second remaining britain left in the second round and a difficult matchup for her, a player she had beaten a week earlier in one of the tournaments in the lead up to this yea rs tournaments in the lead up to this years australia open. Afterward she said she did not feel herself out there on court today, a little bit slow, and that was the cause of that defeat. A frustrating day for the british players, but what a day we
have in school mccrystal tomorrow with Novak Djokovic and Serena William back in action, no brits but if youre looking for a grand slam champion and someone who will win it this year take your pick from those players. We have in store. Elsewhere in melbourne, top seed rafa nadal is through to the third round. He was playing argentinas Federico Delbonis when one of his returns flew off his racquet and hit a ball girl in the head. Ouch well, the world number one wasted no time and immediately went over to see how she was. She seemed to be ok, if a little embarrassed, but now has quite a story to tell her friends. Nadal won the match 3 1. The former owner and chairman of saracens has apologised to fans due to what he called ill considered approach to matters concerning the salary cap. He said that while
neither saracens know he deliberately attempted to breach the cap, he took full responsibility, being described as reckless by the panel. He makes reference to image rights and Property Investments. Premiership rugby announced saracens will be relegated at the end of the season after being docked 35 points. England captain joe root has dismissed criticism from Kevin Pietersen about the way pace bowlerjofra archer is treated within the camp. Pietersen appeared to suggest archer had been the victim of leaks in the squad, which reminded him of his own treatment in international setup. There have been a number of learnings for him so far on this tour. We are very keen on making sure we try to get the best out of him. We keep making an environment where he can learn and develop, not stand still as a player, and keep growing in test cricket. Thats all the sport for now. You need a hot toddy i am past that
stage, believe me. It has been days and days of this, this is better. I am gladi and days of this, this is better. I am glad i did not see you when you we re am glad i did not see you when you were worse see you later on. The husband of the british iranian woman has been to downing street to meet borisjohnson for the has been to downing street to meet Boris Johnson for the First Time Since he became Prime Minister. He came under fire for wrongly suggesting she was training journalists at the time of her arrest. It is what he had to say about their meeting. In truth, no breakthrough. A good meeting, half an hour, warm, the Prime Minister and foreign secretary were there, we talked openly, we tried a number of Different Things. We pressed him to
be brave, i want him to push forward soiam be brave, i want him to push forward so i am improving relations, there are underlying issues to be solved, and also to say, you need to be imposing a cost on iran the imposing innocent people is h. I had conversations where the government is reluctant to put iran into a corner but i think you need to in this case, its unacceptable to hold innocent people, please look at ways of doing that. I dont think i would come away thinking she would come out tomorrow or even next week. I will think carefully what i tell her on the phone on saturday. And i think there remains that gap that my government needs to be tougher with iran alongside improving relations generally and the Foreign Office instinct to not have things escalate
and an administration that is very keen to see the uk as an enemy when it doesnt want to be, but we will see. We gave the Prime Minister a little wallet that she had made in prison. He he took that away and was touched. It was a gracious visit. Im appreciative of him giving up the time. As weve been reporting, commerations marking the 75th anniverasry of the liberation of auschwitz have been taking place in jerusalem, and in the audience today in yad vashem are about 100 Holocaust Survivors. Our middle east correspondnt, tom bateman, has been talking one of them. The whole point of this site here at yad vashem was established to preserve the memory of the holocaust, and in this audience of 700 at the event today are around
100 survivors of the holocaust. Their stories are so important to what many of the political leaders are talking about even though the podiums today have been reserved for those World Leaders. We are joined by gisele. You are among the 100 or so survivors here today, thank you for talking to us. I wanted to talk about your story, 1944, and you and your entire family were taken in a very crowded train to auschwitz. When you were taken to auschwitz and arrived, what is your memory of the conditions . We were helped by two jewish inmates in striped uniform, the auschwitz uniform, helping us jump the auschwitz uniform, helping us jump down from the train when we arrived. After two or three hours,
2500 people i figured were loaded, and we were separated from everyone. Wejumped and we were separated from everyone. We jumped down and and we were separated from everyone. Wejumped down and we did not know where we were, and we looked around andi where we were, and we looked around and i did not see my mother or father or sister, and i was alone and hysterical. And then i see. At that point, 90 of the people who arrived by transport, hungarians, we re arrived by transport, hungarians, were separated from the 10 . This 90 were killed that same day. I
knew this later. But i went with my mother, and luckily my mother got into the young womans group, and she stayed with us for five months, five very difficult months. The event today marks 75 years since the liberation in 1945. What is your memory of that day of the 27th of january . We had been taken. This was ina january . We had been taken. This was in a town. We were brought here two 01 in a town. We were brought here two or three days ago from a place where we we re or three days ago from a place where we were brought away from the possible war zone that was to happen between hitler and the russians. And we we re between hitler and the russians. And we were in a new place, and sunday
was the third day from when we arrived, or the fourth day. In the afternoon, sunday afternoon, we didnt work, we did nothing, and suddenly we heard whistling, they called to us to line up in the field, and we ran out. We try to line up in fives, as we do twice a day every day until now. And then somebody with a foghorn since called out, no need to line up, stay where you are we turned around, 320 women, and we see in front of us a line of people, and the man with a foghorn calls out, today, 1945, the
war was declared over, and you are free, and you can do whatever you wa nt to free, and you can do whatever you want to and go where ever you want to. We were asked to stay with you and god you until the russian army comes. and god you until the russian army comes. Gardai. And because we are only here to watch you, we are asking you not to do us any harm. And we heard the news, the good news, the news that we were waiting for the six years. It is of course stories like that that form the centrepiece of remembrance here at yad vashem. The organisers said they wa nted yad vashem. The organisers said they wanted that sense of commemoration to feed into what they say is the key political agenda for them today and that is to counter the growing
wave of anti semitism in europe today. In a moment, the latest business news. First a look at the headlines on afternoon live. Here are your business headlines on afternoon live morrisons is cutting 3,000 managementjobs as it seeks to boost its staff presence on the shop floor. Britains fourth biggest Supermarket Chain plans to hire an additional 7,000 people to work as butchers,
bakers and fishmongers. The government is enacting new rules which will give two weeks paid leave to parents who lose a child. Jacks law comes into force in april. Its named after the son of a campaigner who found that some bereaved parents were offered as little as one day off by their employers. Tesla has overtaken volkswagen as the worlds second most valuable carmaker. A dramatic rise in teslas share price has pushed its market value above £76 billion. Tesla boosted production by 50 last year, making 368,000 of its electric cars, but volkswagen made almost 11 million vehicles. Ido i do understand that at all. It is the value of shares, how much investors think it is worth, and they think tesla is more valuable than volkswagen a company which makes a few hundred cars versus 11 million. In the meantime, shall we
talk about morrisons . A big shift in strategy. 3000 managementjobs to go but 7000 more people on the shop floor so it may seem like a net win but these management roles are full time, highly paid position replaced by 7000 positions which were not necessarily be full time and will probably be on balance lower paid. This is morrisons trying to set itself apart from the other major supermarkets. It is not long ago since tesco announced it was cutting jobs in its specialist counters where you see an actual butcher, baker orfishmonger in where you see an actual butcher, baker or fishmonger in the supermarket. Morrison is going all in on that. Why did they need to do this . We are changing shop habits. If you going for a big weekly shop,
more of us are shopping at our local mini sainsburys or tesco. Moss morrisons was in that market but then rolled out but also audi and lidl have been gobbling up market share so this is morrisons trying to make themselves more distinctive. This is the moment where i point to a picture. What is that . It is a peacock it is an airport. They will not stop peacocks flying, will they . In the cabin, yes. It has not been done yet. Some people would call this excess baggage for your excess baggage. This is a reminder of a 2018 story about United Airlines turning a passenger they could not bring their emotional support peacock on board. This is something many people flying in the us might
have seen a surprising amount of times. They get certified by a doctor to say they need this animal to fly with them as emotional support, and they have been all kinds of reports of people trying to bring on peacocks, turkeys, squirrels, frogs and goats on board. As emotional support animals. The reason we are talking about it today is the Us Department of transportation is trying to clamp down on this, suggesting some people are falsely claiming their pets to be service animals, and the government saying only dogs should be allowed on board the people who have a real need for a guide dog or some kind of service animal. Michelle will talk about this. There isa michelle will talk about this. There is a business angle to this because this will be a relief to the Many Airlines who have been having to grapple with this weird publicity. This is one of those where people
are claiming that those who tried to bring on miniature ponies or peacocks are ruining it for the rest of us. The industry will probably breathe a sigh of relief because they have been dealing with issues where in some cases passengers are fraudulently passing off their pets as emotional support animals so they can bring them into the main cabin, and this department of transportation proposal at this point is to change the rules that would ban them outright. An emotional support animal is an untrained animal. Typically it has been a dog but not necessarily. And is different from a service dog. For example, if you are disabled and require those dogs specially trained to carry out a specific function, if you fill out the required paperwork, you fill out the required paperwork, you can still bring those into the cabin. It is just emotional support dogs and it will be interesting to see what feedback they get. I
suspect our viewers will want to know what kind of emotional support talk you would choose. But a peacock . who knows what kind of pets . And emotional support comes in the form of a peacock for someone and for someone else it was a ferret which was allowed on a plane. This makes people uncomfortable. There have been questions of allergies, who does the airline favour . These rules are aimed at simplifying this, but we will see again. It is open for comment so people have a period of time, and this affects us domestic flights. A ferret on a plane . i think domestic flights. A ferret on a plane . ithink that is domestic flights. A ferret on a plane . i think that is the least of their worries. Where did these animals sit . Unless you have a Business Class seat, where is your big dog or peacock going to sit . Lets talk about the markets. Thanks, michelle. Blimey, hejust doesnt care she is terribly upset. The ftse has not been doing well, this virus out of chinas depressing things like oil and mining stocks which is what people run away from. A big mining giant is suffering heavy losses and also airlines with people wandering about whether they should be flying or not. The pound versus the dollar is holding up well. It is in the same territory as it was earlier. It is doing pretty well. See you later, emotional support. More trees need be planted and people need to eat less meat if the uk is to meet its commitments to cut emissions to almost zero by 2050 thats according to the Governments Advisory Committee on climate change. It says taxes on meat and dairy
might be necessary if people dont cut consumption voluntarily and is calling for fundamental changes to the way land is used. Heres our environment analyst, roger harrabin. Meat and milk have become political. The cows and sheep that feed us also belch the planet heating gas methane. The Committee Says we should all be eating a fifth less red meat and dairy produce by 2050. Thats the date for getting britains Climate Emissions to virtually zero. The changes we are advocating in this report are transformational to the way we use land overall. We are talking about freeing up a minimum of a fifth of Agricultural Land across the uk. Thats a huge step. Many Livestock Farmers strongly object to that idea. But other landowners see a potential opportunity. I think they absolutely recognise they need to be part of the solution and what we hear from our members is they are very much up for it. Its a huge transition and actually we are talking about making it over a quite short period of time,
so i think they need careful and important guidance to enable them to do it. Environmentalists, meanwhile, say, if high bakers can get rich on vegan sausage rolls, no one will notice a 20 drop in meat eating by mid century. Its a pathetic damp squib of report. If we think we can address this huge existential crisis that we face, climate breakdown, the breakdown of our life support systems, with tiny, incremental measures, we are deceiving ourselves. The report has implications for livestock. It says the number of sheep and cows on the fields should be cut by 10 by 2050. It says a fifth of farmland should be taken for forestry or other activities that actually capture greenhouse gases. And theres a strong recommendation on the peat bogs that trap carbon. We must stop digging them up to enrich our gardens, the report says. Some will think this document
could have been much more radical. Others will consider it a careful piece of work designed not to scare the horses, or the cows, or the sheep. For people in scotland are being tested for a suspected virus after travelling to the country from wuhan. It looks as though the virus could be here. More of that when we come back and a couple of minutes but first the weather. Cloudy skies for much of the country. There are one or two lucky few that have got sunshine today and that has been across the north east. If you take a look at the satellite and pressure chart, High Pressure still with us but plenty of cloud feeding around. In york, sunshine coming through, but it looks as though you are a
favoured few. Some brightness today, elsewhere, cloudy skies, mild after comparison to earlier on in the week. Light patchy rain into the far north west of scotland. This weather front sweeps its way south, grants to hold close to the Scottish Borders, it will then revert back north as we go into tomorrow. With all that cloud around, it will not bea all that cloud around, it will not be a cold start to tomorrow, many places staying above freezing. A touch of light frost with a few brea ks touch of light frost with a few breaks in the vale of york and here we are likely to see the best of the brighter weather. But the cloudy conditions stay with us. The rain meanders its way to the far north west of scotland just like the last few days. We will start to see the first signs of the changes we head into the weekend but not making much impression until saturday. The
risk of a little more in the way of thicker cloud and drizzle but elsewhere, with the winds picking up, that might punch a few more holes in the cloud so we might see more on the way of sunshine around potentially on saturday. In terms of the feel of things, very similar to the feel of things, very similar to the last few days, 7 10d the high. The real change arrives saturday night to sunday. This weather front will push its way south and east. It will push its way south and east. It will move that mild the heir to the near continent, introducing something cooler. All that tra nslates something cooler. All that translates to wet start on sunday, the rain pushes its way to the south east and lingers for much of the afternoon and then leaves a trail of sunny spells and scattered showers behind. Some of the showers will turn more wintry. And then that opens the floodgates for more wet and windy weather to arrive into next week. This weeks High Pressure and calm weather starts to ease
away. You are watching afternoon live. Dont leave the area. Millions of people are told to stay put as two more cities in china are placed in lockdown to try and contain the coronavirus. A bbc news investigation showed seven babies may have died unnecessarily at an nhs trust in kent. World leaders gather injerusalem nhs trust in kent. World leaders gather in jerusalem to nhs trust in kent. World leaders gather injerusalem to map the anniversary of the liberation of the auschwitz camp in poland. The holocaust was an appalling jewish tragedy but it was also an universal tragedy and one which we compound if we do not heed its lessons. Big news ahead of the six nations
and the scotland fly half finn russell could miss all of the tournament after leaving a Training Camp in edinburgh for breaching Team Protocol. And looking at the weather for us, louise. It might be cloudy but at least it is dry. There is more wet and windy weather heading towards the uk as we move to the latter stages of the weekend. Thank you. Also coming up, government Climate Advisers say we need to reduce our Meat Consumption by ff if environmental targets are to be met. Bya by ff if environmental targets are to be met. By a fifth. This is afternoon live. In the last few minutes, we have heard that four people in scotland are being tested for suspected coronavirus after travelling to the country from wuhan
in china. Thats according to the head of infection medicine at the university of edinburgh. It comes as beijing authorities cancel new Year Celebrations this weekend as a precaution about the spread of a deadly new virus grows. Two more chinese cities have joined wuhan in being put effectively into lockdown. They are 70 kilometres away from wuhan, where11 million residents have now been told to stay put. Official figures say that 25 people have died and 600 more have been infected, most of them in wuhan. Its position in the centre of chinas high speed passenger rain network is one of the reasons the virus has been able to spread so quickly. It is also one of the largest intermediate ports along the Yangtze River with ships connecting the city to shanghai. The river is more than 6000 kilometres long and is used to ship food, products and also for Public Transport. Our beige and correspondence sent this report. Wuhan is in virtual lockdown. In the city of 11 Million People, you are not allowed to enter any public space without a mask. All Public Transport has been closed. The last flights in were already half empty. The final Train Services were also eerily quiet. Normally the Lunar New Year rush would mean you cant get a ticket. Translation here, were at the very epicentre of the virus. Maybe its best not to travel. Translation im confident that our government has the situation well in hand, and that the situation will be quickly brought under control. Now, wherever you look, people are Wearing Masks. Theyre lining up to buy more masks. Some people are cancelling their trips and there is a lot of concern. And whats really made people Pay Attention to this Health Problem has been the shutdown of wuhan. The wuhan shutdown has made this
emergency suddenly very real for people right across china, triggering memories of the 2002 sars outbreak, which led to more than 600 deaths. Neighbouring cities are also stopping Train Services as well as closing bars and restaurants. These drastic measures have been welcomed by the world health organisation. The sequencing was done quickly, but more importantly, it was shared immediately. And thats why korea, japan, thailand were able to diagnose the new coronavirus quickly. In all chinese cities, medical teams are preparing for an influx of patients with the coronavirus, which causes pneumonia. Staff at this wuhan hospital isolation ward are worried. Translation we are worried about our work here and get even more worried when we see the news every day. I always say to others its ok as we are well protected. Actually, i was just saying that to keep them calm. We are actually afraid and worried. But as long as we are here, our own sense of duty will help us to do the job. Translation we are still all young ourselves, so honestly we feel lost and afraid. Our family members are worried too, but as long as we wear the protective clothing, well be ok. Travellers had already left wuhan before the transport shutdown was in place. With a five day incubation period, many may have carried the virus to other cities and countries, not knowing they had already been infected. And inside a metropolis quarantined from the outside world, medical teams are bracing for this emergency to get much worse before it gets any better. Cases of coronavirus have now been confirmed in thailand, south korea and the United States and in the last couple of hours of vietnam. British Health Secretary at matt hancock discussed the virus in the house of commons today and said the risk of the virus writing in the uk isa risk of the virus writing in the uk is a low but precautions are being
taken. There are no confirmed cases of this new infection in the uk so far. We have been closely monitoring the situation in wuhan and have put in place proportionate precautionary measures. We have been guided by the advice of the chief medical officer. Since yesterday, Public Health england officials have been carrying out enhanced monitoring of direct flights from wuhan and all passengers on direct flights from china will receive information on what to do if they fall ill. As we mentioned, one case has been diagnosed in the United States so far. That was a traveller returning from wuhan wuhan to seattle. What sort of reaction has there been to this there . Anxiety is really high among Chinese People in the us. Two days ago, when the first case was confirmed in seattle, several
pharmacy stores sold out in masks in downtown seattle and some of the chinese in town had to order boxes of masks online. Also, it will disturb peoples plans for the upcoming Lunar New Year, which is this saturday. Some who are from wuhan have been one to cancel their new years eve dinner, which is the most important meal of the year for many chinese families. We learned that two neighbouring cities to wuhan have been in lockdown as well, meaning no planes or trains can go into the city. This is unprecedented for the Chinese Government to take such a measure. Unprecedented and quite frightening for many people, when we are talking about more than 1 Million People in one city who are being told, you cant move. In 2003, during the sars outbreak, the
Chinese Government did close down some schools, apartment buildings, but never a whole city, and now we are talking about three cities. This poses a very important question, how do you strike the right balance of controlling the spread of the virus and at the same time making sure that resources and so one can reach the cities . This is an unanswered question at the moment. The timing of this could not be worse for the Chinese Community because this is a huge weekend coming up. Yes, to put this into context, the Lunar New Year is a time that millions of chinese travel within the country and also globally to celebrate the holiday and to dine with their families. The shutdown of wuhan came ata time families. The shutdown of wuhan came at a time that some of the travels we re at a time that some of the travels were already finished so some experts are worried it was too late to shut down the city and a lot of
people who are potentially infected have already left the city and continue to spread the virus in the rest of the world. This is a very alarming. And with your knowledge of that previous sales experience, what more might the chinese authorities be considering . Sars experience. Many experts say the Chinese Government and the Global Community have handled this differently compared to sars. This time around, the internet is more available in china, social media is more active, and the Chinese Government has released information related to the outbreak earlier than last time, but online, too many Chinese People accuse the government of delaying the control of the outbreak, and at the control of the outbreak, and at the moment it is really hard to determine what the Chinese Government will do but we are seeing signs that they will create an
outbreak zone to control the virus within several cities around the hospital area. Thank you so much for joining us from washington. A bbc news investigation has uncovered significant concerns about Maternity Services at one of englands largest hospital trusts. M ista kes englands largest hospital trusts. Mistakes continued even after criticism of its performance. At least seven babies have died at east kent Nhs Foundation trust since 2016. Some of the deaths were found to be preventable. A year earlier, a review found major failings, including consultants refusing to come in when on call. Archie powell was born last february, a twin brother to evelyn, but maternity staff failed to spot that he had group b strep, a potentially serious infection. They took too long to treat him and he died aged four days. Before they were born, we got the double pram and everything, two of everything and stuff, and then you come home and its only one. Archie was born at this hospital in margate. Its run by the east Kent Hospitals trust and its had maternity problems for years. In 2015, external examiners found consultants wouldnt do ward rounds or come in when on call. Our investigation has uncovered failings since then, at least seven preventable deaths in recent years. There are questions over three deaths from last year, including archie powells. In 2017, weve identified two more deaths, one of which is currently the subject of an inquest, and weve discovered the trust accept that two deaths in 2016 were also preventable. Emmalene bushnell acted on behalf of those two families. Both failed due to problems with ctgs, the system for monitoring babys heart rates. The trust admitted in both of those cases that, had proper care been given, in terms of obstetric and midwifery care, then those children would have survived. One would always hope that when a problems been identified,
such as failings in relation to ctg, that the trust go away, they identify those errors, how they came about, they learn from those errors and they take steps to ensure that doesnt happen to another baby, to another family, and that no one suffers harm again. But they didnt learn. Becca janes proudly displays her personal tribute to her daughter. Hallie rae died just four days after being born in 2017. Again, medics didnt properly interpret her daughters heart rate, didnt realise she was in distress. If hallie rae had been born earlier, then she would be here today. It makes me feel angry that theres so many cases of negligence. Babies are suffering. The trust told us they recognise theyve not always provided the right standard of care for every woman and baby in their hospitals, and wholeheartedly apologised. Michael buchanan,
bbc news, margate in kent. World leaders are injerusalem this lunchtime to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the auschwitz death camp in poland. More than a Million People, most of them jewish, were murdered by the nazis during the second world war. President s and princes, dozens of dignitaries, answering the call to remember. The Largest International gathering of israel has ever hosted. Translation we remember not because we have a sense of supremacy and not in order tojust think about those atrocities the whole time and the injustice, no, we remember because we understand that if we do not remember then history can be repeated. Auschwitz birkenau was the most notorious of nazi germanys
death camps. It has come to symbolise the holocaust, which killed 6 million jews. British troops who liberated Bergen Belsen were shocked by the industrial scale of death and trauma of those who survived, horrifying revelations which led to the pledge of never again. Those memories are preserved for israel in the hall of remembrance, putting faces and names to the overwhelming numbers. Organisers and speakers are highlighting a message about the threat of anti semitism and the need to combat it, looking to the past but also the present. We must be prepared to stand as they did against the wave of their times. We must be prepared to confront and expose the file tide of
anti semitism that is fuelling hate and violence all across the world and violence all across the world and we must stand together. Many Holocaust Survivors found refuge in israel. Some come together here for a class to sharpen their ageing memories. They want their experience to be a living one, even after they are gone, not a page and a history book, and so they tell their stories to the young. My grandchildren, they are always asking more and more, how did we get by and what did we have to eat and what happened now and what happened later . I survived, but my parents didnt. The legacy of the war remains politically charged but the aim is to keep learning lessons from its unspeakable tragedies. The prince of wales has warned hatred and intolerance still lurk in the human heart at that event in israel. During his speech, he said lessons of the holocaust are still searingly relevant and called on leaders to be fearless in confronting violence. Acts of unspeakable cruelty are still perpetrated around the world against people for reasons of their religion, their race or their beliefs. Knowing as we do the darkness to which behaviour leads, we must be vigilant in discerning these ever changing threats. We must be fearless in confronting falsehoods and resolute in resisting words and acts of violence. We must
never rest in seeking to create Mutual Understanding and respect. We must attend the earth of our societies so that the seeds of division cannot take root and grow. And we must never forget that every human being is in the image of god and even a single human life is like and even a single human life is like an entire universe. Applause. The holocaust was an appalling jewish tragedy but it was also a universal human tragedy and one which we compound if we do not heed its lessons. On this day, in this
place, and in memory of the millions who perished, let us recommit ourselves to tolerance and respect and to ensuring that those who lived through this darkness will forever, as in the words of the prophet isaiah, bea as in the words of the prophet isaiah, be a light unto the nations to guide the generations that follow. He has not met with mrjohnson since 2017, when he was foreign secretary and came under fire 2017, when he was foreign secretary and came underfire for 2017, when he was foreign secretary and came under fire for wrongly suggesting she was training journalists at the time of her arrest. In truth, no breakthrough. A good meeting. Half an hour. The Prime Minister was there, the foreign secretary was there, they talked quite openly about having tried a number of Different Things to get her home. We pressed him to be brave. I want him to push forward on improving relations, some of the underlying issues to be solved. And also to say, you need to be imposing also to say, you need to be imposing a cost on iran for holding innocent people as leveraged and you have got to be brave there as well. I talked about this. The government is quite
relu cta nt to about this. The government is quite reluctant to put iran into a corner. I think you need to in this case. It is unacceptable to hold innocent people. Please look at ways of doing that. So we talk through. I dont think i have come away thinking she is coming out tomorrow or even next week and i will think carefully what i tell her on the phone on saturday. And i think there are remains of that gap between my sense that the government needs to be tougher with iran alongside improving relations generally and the Foreign Office instinct to not have things escalate. We will see. The other thing, we gave the Prime Minister a little wallet that she had made in prison, so he took that away and was touched. Yeah, it was, iam
prison, so he took that away and was touched. Yeah, it was, i am deeply appreciative of him giving up the time. convention. Secondly, they must stop the army from committing any genocidal crimes. Third, they must preserve any evidence of genocide. And fourth, they must report back to this court after four months and then every six months until there is a final ruling as to whether or not myanmar has been guilty of genocide. It is at that moment away we go to the weather update. That is looking a bit like niagara falls. The rath of gloria. We have been talking about this storm across spain, the pyrenees and france pretty much all week. Try to sound enthusiastic. But it has been a significant storm. It has brought unprecedented amounts of rainfall in parts of perpignan, toulouse. I can only do those three in the accident. Four or five months of rain only do those three in the accident. Four orfive months of rain in three days. Significant rainfall totals. We have got many of the rivers in that area on flood alert at the moment. And we have also seen an unprecedented snow as well. Obviously, not unusual for them to get to know at this time of year. How does he know where he is going . I would not advise doing that at
home. They have had a metre of fresh snow, snow depth now at two metres across the pyrenees, where the alps havent seen any significant snow since december. And it is moving . It is moving a little in the areas where they have seen heavy rainfall but we have got pretty sharp showers across spain and portugal at the moment. This is a gloria moving past the pyrenees. It is going to weaken a little as it crosses the French Riviera and then it may pep up as we head into the weekend and towards italy. We could still be talking about it, can you believe it, i will be gone. But it really has been significant. And it is because the High Pressure over us and it is because the High Pressure over us is not moving . It is not unusual for them to get this sort of rain to sit there, 2008 they had a really significant storm. And back in 1996. But if you have got heavy rain in one place, you are going to have something that contradicts that, and we have got this high across the uk. Lovely, dry weather. Most of us today have seen a lot of cloud, unfortunately. Only yorkshire and parts of east scotland today have seen sunshine today. It is not unfortunate for them. Lets not moan about it. Ill tell you about the weather because the rain is set to return as we head into the weekend. Next week is pretty miserable, im afraid. Overnight tonight, we keep that cloud. One or two holes hero they are. We could see a frost but for most of it will stay mild, cloudy. This rain near the Scottish Borders first thing tomorrow and then it will pivot back up through scotland as we go through the day. Cloudy
skies for many tomorrow. But try, relatively quiet. Those temperatures again, similar values to the last couple of days. We are going to start to see a change as we head into the weekend, particularly from sunday. Outdoor plants, if you can choose, certainly saturday. This cold front will gradually move in. It will bring more cloud out of the west. A freshening south westerly breeze and that is good because with a bit more of a breeze, hopefully that will allow the cloud to break up that will allow the cloud to break up and we might even get a bit more in the way of sunshine on saturday afternoon. A cold front is going to push through. It arrives on saturday night into sunday and it is going to squeeze that mild air into the near confident continent, but not for long. It will bring a change to the feel of the weather the further north you are. We start off on send a wet and pretty windy. The rain
pretty much grind to a halt in the south east. Behind, brightand breezy with a scattering of showers. Temperatures a little bit cooler here. But as i say, into monday and onwards, we could see a deep area of low pressure and that is going to allow a real change across the uk. Wet and windy weather set to return. Its a big blow for scotland though because it is not clear whether he will be involved in the remainder of the tournament or not. He has played a vital part for scotland, 46 caps for his country, and this was last yea rs his country, and this was last years 6 nation six nations match which he played a crucial role in. Whether you place on the rest of the tournament or not, we will find out. The head coach knows him very well and ultimately the decision will be up and ultimately the decision will be up to him. No more british players playing in the Australian Open . Melbourne. Defeats for Heather Watson and harriet dart means that on day four of the tournament that british hopes in the singles draw are now over. It was always going to be a tall order for both players today in their second round matches. Dart was taking on the wimbledon champion simona halep and, despite a battling display in the second set, the fourth seed did enough to get over the line. As for watson, she was beaten in under an hour by 16th seed elise mertens. John watson was watching in melbourne. For the second year in a row, no british players remain in the third round of the singles here at the Australian Open. It was always going to be difficult for harriet dart up against simona halep. She made a real fight of it,
trying to come back into it in the second set. As for Heather Watson, she was the second remaining briton left in the second round and a difficult matchup for her against a player she had beaten a week earlier in one of the tournaments in the lead up to this years Australian Open. Afterwards she said she did not feel herself out there on court today, a little bit slow, and that was the cause of that defeat. A frustrating day for the british players, but what a day we have in store tomorrow with Novak Djokovic and Serena William back in action, no brits, but if youre looking for a grand slam champion and someone who will win it this year take your pick from those players. Elsewhere in melbourne, top seed rafa nadal is through to the third round. He was playing argentinas Federico Delbonis when one of his returns flew off his racket and hit a ball girl in the head. Ouch well, the world number one wasted no time and immediately went over to see how she was. She seemed to be ok, if a little embarrassed, but now has quite a story to tell her friends. Nadal won the match 3 1. The former owner and chairman of saracens has apologised to fans due to what he called an ill considered approach to matters concerning to salary cap compliance. There have been a number of learnings for him so far on this tour. We are very keen on making sure that we try to get the best out of him. We keep making an environment where he can learn and develop, not stand still as a player, and keep growing in test cricket. Thats all the sport for now. Four people have been tested for suspected coronavirus in scotland. It has already put wuhan in lockdown to stop it spreading. It has infected at least 500 people and killed at least 17. You have been
sending us your questions about the virus and here to answer them as our Global Health correspondent. This is developing every hour. Lots of people expressing concern. Jason said, how deadly is this virus likely to be . Wood well in helping people be likely to recover . We are still early days in this outbreak. It has only been two weeks since they identified what this virus actually is. At this stage, we do not know how deadly it is or how far and wide it has gone yet. We think about 500 cases have been identified and 17 people have died, but were still trying to figure out how many people have been and win which parts of the country. All of that will be decided is more information comes in. It is fairto is more information comes in. It is fair to say that, if it does affect older people with underlying Health Problems much worse than it would
younger healthy people, but at this stage we are still finding out more as scientists try to understand the virus better we should have a better idea of how far this is likely to go. One of the crucial questions is, what is the incubation period for the disease and when as a person become contagious . That is important because it could be here already but we might not know. Its another unknown. Scientists think it is about five days judging by previous viruses and other colds which is what. Codes from viruses and other colds which is what. Codes from the viruses and other colds which is what. Codes from the family viruses and other colds which is what. Codes from the family of coronaviruses. But again researchers are trying to find these things out but they think within a few days or two weeks. But it really is unclear at the moment. Is there any vaccination developed against this virus so far . It is only been a couple of weeks since they did the
genetic sequencing of this virus to really understand what it is. It has got quite a random name. So they are still trying to come up with a vaccine. Vaccines take a very long time. Traditionally, they were able to come up with a vaccine for ebola relatively quickly, but that will ta ke relatively quickly, but that will take a few years. But we know today some announcements coming out of davos there are three lines of investigations in the us and australia where scientists are well under way with trying to find a new vaccine but i imagine that will be a while of yet. Stephan says, can the coroner be transformed through items bought from hannon posted to the uk . Transferred through items brought from wuhan. It seems unlikely. There was nothing about those concerns. We
know that some sorts of these viruses can exist and live outside of the human body for about 24 hours, we can know they can be on surfaces for around that time, but it isa surfaces for around that time, but it is a big jump to go from that, getting into a package in surviving the travel and infecting someone on the travel and infecting someone on the other side. There is no evidence to suggest that has happened in the past all that is happening now, but thatis past all that is happening now, but that is something they will look at more closely. Is there any reason such coronaviruses are a much more from china . There have been two previous coronaviruses, the last one in saudi arabia, it was called the middle east respiratory syndrome from camels, and before that the sars virus which came from cats in china. So it starts with animals . In
china, live markets are all the rage. And people live in much closer proximity. There are lots of live animals at these markets. It is not the sanitised packaged meat you get in the supermarkets. They think this came from a fish market in wuhan with live animals were being kept. There is talk about some of those animals being there illegally. We do not know what the animal source for this is. There has been suggestion of snakes, bats, but that has been contested by other scientists. But it is about the proximity of People Living closely with these animals. Julianne said, if a passenger arrives showing symptoms of the virus, what happens to them . We will see more of what has been happening in scotland today. As people are more mindful of it, there will be more mindful of it, there will be more checks, and thats a very good thing. There are no flights coming in from thing. There are no flights coming infrom wuhan thing. There are no flights coming in from wuhan to the uk any more
because they have stopped any travel out of the main city that has been affected, but the monitors put in place at Heathrow Airport for people coming in was never about catching sick people of the plane and isolating them and taking them to hospital, its about making sure that people coming and know about the symptoms and the signs and know what to do so they are given leaflets a nd what to do so they are given leaflets and information and a check over to see if they have symptoms, but the chances of catching Somebody Just as they have this illness is quite slim on that one day they happen to be travelling, so it is more about knowing who is coming in from wuhan, making sure they have the information they need to do the right thing if they do become sick. Is from simon who says, if you have had the flu vaccination, are you going to be more protected . We dont know. The vaccines are very specifically targeted at these viruses so i dont think you should
assume if you have the flu shot you will be ok or you are more protected. We do not know. They have the genetic sequencing of this virus. That is a very good start but there is a long way to go before we get protection against this virus. We will talk about this again for sure. A plain helping to fight a bushfire in australia has crashed. Our correspondent is in sydney. This latest tragic incident is a reminder that the fire season is not over but of the dangerous conditions the firefighters on the ground operate
under the c130 hercules operating in the snowy area to help control a fire that was burning at an emergency level, huge plumes of smoke, very low visibility when contact smoke, very low visibility when co nta ct was smoke, very low visibility when contact was lost, and the aircraft itself has gone off the radar. We now know that a huge ball of fire that emerged when the aircraft crashed in that area, we know that the three us crewmembers who have been described as experienced and well known have died in the crash and there are no survivors. The New South Wales premier has said that flags will be flying at half mast out of respect for those who lost their lives and that all air tankers operations have been suspended as Police Investigate what happened in the crash and the course of the crash, but another reminder of the very difficult conditions that have been happening and also the fact
that these fires are still blazing, some out of control. As we speak, 70 fires burning in New South Wales, 44 of those are not contained at the moment. Even though there was a lull in the weather in the past few days, the danger is not over in this bushfire season yet. For people in scotland are being tested for suspected coronavirus. headlines on afternoon live morrisons is cutting 3000 managementjobs as it seeks to boost its staff presence on the shop floor. Britains 4th biggest Supermarket Chain plans to hire an additional 7000 people to work as butchers, bakers and fishmongers the us treasury secretary has said he expects to complete a post brexit trade deal with the uk by the end of the year. Steven mnuchin said it was an absolute priority for President Trump but any deal must also be approved by the house of representatives, which is controlled by opposition democrats. The government is enacting new rules which will give two weeks paid leave to parents who lose a child. Jacks law comes into force in april. Its named after the son of a campaigner who found that some bereaved parents were offered as little as one day off by their employers. Lets talk about morrisons, what is going on . A big change in strategy announced by britains fourth biggest supermarket today. 3000
managers will lose their current roles. They will be offered 7000 new jobs which will be created, so 3000 managerjob gone jobs which will be created, so 3000 manager job gone and jobs which will be created, so 3000 managerjob gone and 7000 shop floor jobs created. But one thing that morrisons has not been too forthcoming with on detail is what kind ofjobs would these jobs forthcoming with on detail is what kind ofjobs would thesejobs be . There will be things like bakers, butchers, fishmongers. Lots of new roles, but they will not tell us how many are full time versus part time and they will undoubtedly be lower paid. Its not funny, simon why do they need to do this . This is a change to changing Shopping Habits and the big four supermarkets have been losing ground for a long time now to the german discounters who are undercutting them on price. What morrisons are trying to do is set
themselves out in terms of service, saying, if you come to us, you will get more value for your money. Its an interesting contrast with what we saw from tesco, where it announced cutbacks in all its specialist counters, so you are less likely to see a baker or butcher in a tesco store. Morrisons is going all in on that handle on the market. The question on everybodys lips, how will we get to a net zero emissions . Its a good question. It began with that recently introduced government target of achieving net zero emissions by 2050, the idea being that we do not emit any omissions on a net basis, we have all kinds of mitigating measures in place like forests to soak up our carbon emissions, but the government has given precious little detail on how they intend to get there, and today we are hearing from citizens advice who are worried that consumers might
ultimately miss out on. All be undercut on this process. I can see you are confused dara is here to tell us herself about what exactly citizens advice is worried about, tell us more. We are concerned that the government. This is a great time for them to be thinking about Information Support for people as we start moving towards achieving net zero. This is not a criticism of government policy, this is about making plans now, ministers took into industry and trying to work out how we will get to net zero emissions. If we can build in information and support, help people make the changes they will have to make the changes they will have to make as well as making sure there is when things go wrong, thats what we need to do, we need to build it from now. Spell out for us what scenarios you are worried about where
consumers will be left out of pocket or unfairly out of pocket. We will have to change the way we heat our homes, we will have to move to low carbon heat sources. Our homes have to be made Energy Efficient and moving to having electric cars and things like that. All of these are Big Decisions that people have to make. There is no plan right now for government. And when we get that plan, what we are saying is we want to make sure that people are at the heart of these plans, information and support is built in, because right now the public overwhelmingly support these plans, 82 of people said they support the governments ambitions, but people also told us they need information and support but had to make decisions, they are worried about things like cost and whether it would be inconvenient to them, so if we build these things in for now, people are more likely to go with it. Are you worried that the
government has not really spelt out its plans or doesnt even have a plan per se to produce emissions to zero within 30 years . It will be a fundamental change. It has beena been a really busy time politically. This is a really important year. The treasury are coming out of big review of how we get to next zero. I think these plans are coming together and i think governments are taking an active role in this. They are putting together a heap road map for how we heat our homes, lets make people central to these things and we do not lose that goodwill. Thank you for that. Lets have a quick look at the markets before i go. It is not a pretty picture. The ftse has been losing ground all week a lot of it due to concerns about this
coronavirus, what it could mean the air travel which is why you are seeing Airline Stocks down, the oil and commodities stocks are falling because of the falling oil price, concern about what it might mean for industrial people moving around and consumers of oil not consuming as much as they would have. The pound has been holding up well for the dollarfor most of has been holding up well for the dollar for most of this week having gone as no as 1. 29, now it is up there. Thank you very much, see you later on. The International Court of justice has ordered me and mark to ta ke justice has ordered me and mark to take action. Judges rule the range of muslims face a real risk of genocide. The uns top court issued for emergency measures. To prevent killings and destruction or any act designed to stop the rohingya giving
birth, any actions that violate the Genocide Convention to ensure its military does not emit acts of genocide, preserve and prevent the destruction of evidence of genocide and report on measures implemented within four months and then again every six months until the icj reaches a decision on the bigger question of whether myanmar is guilty of deliberately trying to destroy the range of people, and that may not be for years. While the court does not have the power to enforce its rulings, human Rights Groups have urged governments and un bodies to weigh in to ensure that the emergency measures are enforced. The us treasury secretary says. Us treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin said that the uk had indicated it wanted to accomplish both a deal with the eu and the us in 2020 which was an aggressive timetable. Lets get more on this now with anna isaac, whos a reporter at the wall street journal. We keep hearing the differences in rows that blew up yesterday in davos. This row has been brewing for a time now. The us has tried to pursue a strategy to get round the table at the oecd, lets talk about how best to tax predominantly large Silicon Valley us companies, lets agree on a tax there rather than have a piecemeal approach country by country. You can nicer see that because the us views its lobbying capabilities better or because it is trying to be seen to take a more multilateral approach rather than trying to pick up countries one by one. France is one of the countries it has had a big row with and they have said, we will take a pause and wait a few months, lets see where we can get to by the end of 2020 in
terms of the oecd. But the uk confirmed we would press ahead with a tax on these Big Companies which the us regards as a double taxation because it comes in the form of the Digital Sales tax so taxing both here and also the us where these Big Companies are theoretically based. It was interesting to see his face, saying, if you do that, there will bea saying, if you do that, there will be a deal we will not sign, in fact, we will introduce tariffs. It is very clear what the strategy has been. They do use tariffs as a lever. It was not altogether surprising to see that being plucked out. If you dont follow our line on trade we will pursue. We will put taxes on your company. Then theres another row . How well we has been a less obvious out in the open conversation because it has been to
do with National Security however we have had sources saying it is considered an important lever for the us in trade negotiations. We have had that more explicitly in recent days because it is coming to crunch time for the uk to go public with his decision on whether or not it will allow the Chinese Company to ta ke it will allow the Chinese Company to take part in its five g network but interestingly you are seeing the european countries, the remaining 27, germany saying, we will hold off, we will push up that decision again to later in the year. This is at the heart of this. You have got the eu, you have the uk, the americans want to have trade deals with both, so both of them are watching each other. There is a triangle here that does not meet up. There is an extraordinarily interesting dynamic. There was a debate about whether or not the uk should have parallel negotiations with the us and eu and play the two
off against each other whereas in brussels you had that same argument being made. The only country that has effectively managed to enter into negotiations with both his the us so the us as the country that is having these parallel negotiations. And can play the others off against each other. Exactly. It will be very ha rd to each other. Exactly. It will be very hard to decipher going forward. Where is your money . Im not allowed to bet there have been no significant rain across the uk this week. That is great news. But unfortunately the beautiful winter sunshine we had earlier on in the week is easing the way. A lot of cloudy skies across the country. We still have High Pressure with us but a lot of cloud feeding and across that high now. When is picking up into the north and just a few favoured spots seeing brightness today, chiefly across the north east of england. So a few
holes across eastern scotland and north wales but generally overcast for the afternoon, temperatures 810d, for the afternoon, temperatures 8 10d, patchy rain in the north west. That rain will continue to sink its way across scotland. Not that much in the way of rain but it pushes its way across the Scottish Borders into Northern Ireland by the end of the night. With that blanket of cloud around, we will see temperatures holding up above freezing. A few breaks and a few pockets of isolated frost but few and far between. Generally speaking, and far between. Generally speaking, a murky start to friday but a good deal of dry weather in the story. Our weather front reverts back into the west of scotland, taking that way rain through western scotland. As we move out of friday to saturday, High Pressure pressure scoots off into the near continent, allowing this weather front to push on. The isobars push together, the
winds pick up, so a breezy start to the weekend, but on the whole saturday stays largely dry, the better of the two days. That weather front will gradually push its way steadily south and east as we go to saturday night into sunday. Ahead of it, there is temperatures a uniform once again, 7 10d. But as that front moves south and east, it will introduce cold airfor moves south and east, it will introduce cold air for the north west so for a time we will see a noticeable difference in the feel of the weather. But sunday is dismal, breezy, outbreaks of rain, plenty of showers, and is that cool air kicks in, some of those showers will turn wintry, chiefly to Higher Ground but some lower levels for a time. 8 10 the overall height. Make the most of the weather, turning wet and windy next week. Hello, youre watching afternoon live. Im simon mccoy. Today at 4. Hello everyone. This is afternoon live. In the last hour we have heard that four people in scotland are being tested for suspected coronavirus after travelling to the country from wuhan, china, according
to the head of infection medicine at the university of edinburgh. It comes as beijing authorities have cancelled new Year Celebrations this weekend as a precaution as fears about the spread of a deadly new virus grow. Two more chinese cities have joined wuhan, where the virus was first identified, in being put into lock down. These are 70 kilometres away from wuhan, where11 million residents have been told to stay put. Official figures say that 25 people have died and 600 more have been infected most of them in wuhan. Wuhans position in the centre of chinas high speed passenger Train Network is one of the major reasons the virus has been able to spread so quickly. It is also one of the largest intermediate ports. Chinas Yangtze River, with ships connecting the city to shanghai the river is more than 6000 kilometres long and is used to ship food, products and for Public Transport. Our beijing correspondent Steven Mcdonell has this report. The wuhan shutdown has made this emergency suddenly very real for people right across china,
triggering memories of the 2002 sars outbreak, which led to more than 600 deaths. But as long as we are here,
our own sense of duty will help us to do the job. Next talk to this man from lancaster university. The concern seems to be with these reports in scotland, only suspicions at this stage, clearly this is a virus that spreads very
quickly . Thats right. This is a virus with less than a month of history. And in all dimensions in china and overseas. If you look on toa number of china and overseas. If you look on to a number of cases in the one month, we already have 600 cases reported. So these are the benchmark, really, to call a matter of concern for these kind of viruses. How long, once these cases are established, how long before you can find are established, how long before you canfind a are established, how long before you can find a vaccine that works against the . So, vaccines for these kind of viruses are really a long process. First, we need a lot more Genetic Information for these viruses. At the moment we have around 20 sequences collected from these viruses from different regions. We need to collect more information to really make a stable and trusted vaccine. Once the vaccine will become available, it needs to be tested on animals before
it goes to the human application. At this moment, a vaccine is not really a choice. The choice is to have all the precautionary and control measures to be well in place. Ritual to this, presumably, as the incubation period. Until you know what that is, you dont really know what that is, you dont really know what youre dealing with. Crucial to this. With these viruses we dont know how long the incubation period as, although based on the history with other coronaviruses, we can say it is around five to six days. It seems like the incubation period is longer, especially for viruses in the beginning, which is not well adopted at the moment. Hopefully it will adopt better in the next few weeks and the inhibition period will be shorter, but at the moment it is around 5 60s. Be shorter, but at the moment it is around 560s. If there are any comparisons to be made, they seem to be made with sars back in the early to thousands. How accurate is that . If we look at their genetic of this
with an coronavirus, it is more than 80 similar to the sars virus from 2003. They make up and also the clinical picture, presbytery science, fever, popping, all these are relatively similar to this coronavirus. Based on the clinical picture, genetic make up, we have strong evidence to declare this is pretty similar to the sars coronavirus. When you see chinese authorities effectively putting a of illinois people in lockdown, do you pray is that action or is it an overreaction . Hill this action should have been taken at least one week before. If you look at the history of the virus, in china and overseas, they have directly or indirectly links with wuhan, meaning
if we had taken this action earlier, the cases we are seeing now could have been stopped. Better late than never, so this action certainly appreciated, although it would impose inconveniences and would be ha rd impose inconveniences and would be hard for the Chinese Government puts in place, especially for the seven biggest city in the country, but this would certainly help to limit the spread of the virus any further. Lets pick up on that last point was someone inside the lockdown city of wuhan. What is the atmosphere like with this lockdown in place . Wuhan. What is the atmosphere like with this lockdown in place7m wuhan. What is the atmosphere like with this lockdown in place . It is interesting, i tried going out today to look for a taxi and it took over an errorjust to look for a taxi and it took over an error just to to look for a taxi and it took over an errorjust to get a ride somewhere. When i came back over
an hour. When i came back there was no bread, there is basic foods. I shouldnt say there is no foods, there is basics, so does. But everything was empty, i couldnt find everything. Are the drivers in the taxi scared or annoyed . Because there should be a week going to look forward to . Yeah, it is spring festival right now. This is their new years day right now. Quite frankly, everybody is waiting mass, nobody is really panicking anything, the chinese tend to take things on a little more subtly. It is interesting, because we have a lot of colleagues that are stuck outside of colleagues that are stuck outside of the area and a bunch of us are stuck in here. Somejust go out about 4am this morning. They found out that they could not be travelling today. And his wife is chinese, so they ended up leaving very quickly this morning. You say acting subtly, but a lockdown of 11
Million People isnt exactly subtle. How were you told this was what they we re how were you told this was what they were doing . We chat, we have an app similarto were doing . We chat, we have an app similar to whatsapp and one of my collea g u es similar to whatsapp and one of my colleagues admitted, and i said quote what . Call. We dont get information like that, the media doesnt say, get to get information. We have actually been talking to our company and bosses and saying there needs to be a better situation where you tell us what is going on. Again, its very cavalier. Its like, ok, this is happening, so drink more water, be safe, wear a mass, like that. Versus actual action plans or anything like that. At the moment, it is fairto anything like that. At the moment, it is fair to describe this as an inconvenience. When does this become Something Else . Yeah. Technically i
think it already has. Actually, i showed some sums of runny nose, coughing and bronchitis a few weeks ago and was in the hospital for a while. I was wondering why they were acting different, i work with the Doctors Programme here, again, they ta ke Doctors Programme here, again, they take some things very casually, but they seem to be very interested when i had this and treated me very well. I got better very quick. You dont think you had it, do you . Im starting to really wander. We thought it was a television bronchitis we are using chemicals to clean schools, and it is rather toxic. I have no idea. Will keep in touch with you, good to talk to you. Thank you very much. A bbc news investigation has uncovered significant concerns about Maternity Services at one of englands largest hospital trusts with mistakes continuing, even after criticisms of its performance. At least seven babies have died at east kent Nhs Foundation trust since 2016 and some of the deaths were found to be preventable. A year earlier, a review found majorfailings, including consultants refusing to come in when on call. Our social Affairs CorrespondentMichael Buchanan reports. One would always hope that when a problems been identified, such as failings in relation to ctg, that the trust go away, they identify those errors, how they came about,
they learn from those errors and they take steps to ensure that doesnt happen to another baby, to another family, and that no one suffers harm again. The bill implementing brexit becomes law today, as it received royal assent, the final stage in the parliamentary process. Britain is due to leave
the eu next week, on january 31st. Our chief Political Correspondent vicki young joins me now. We have to use words like signify. What does that mean . It means it has been announced in the house of commons. The queen has approved it but it until it likely now is in the house of lords around six oclock, thatis house of lords around six oclock, that is the moment when it becomes law. Of course, this is the deal that Boris Johnson law. Of course, this is the deal that borisjohnson negotiated with the eu. It puts you into uk law, it sorts out things like repayments that the uk will pay to the European Union, citizens rights, the irish protocol about what happens between ireland, Northern Ireland and the rest of great britain. So a very important moment. Of course will be celebrating, some will be very sad about it, it does mean that after it isa about it, it does mean that after it is a very difficult passage for various different versions of this bill. It has made it through parliament, so will become law later on. Of course, as you say, the uk
will leave the European Union on the 31st of january, which will, as we know, be a moment for celebration in downing street, beck ben will not bonk, despite lots of people want to link to, big ben will not bong. There will be a club projected onto downing street, a light show, union flags around whitehall and nigel farage will be holding a party in Parliament Square for people to go along to if they want to celebrate. Difficult one that, big ben will not bong. Can you say it again . Know why, i certainly couldnt. Just like you couldnt. The point of this is, we are marking this, you said some will selby and others want. We are marking this because it is a very significant. After years of haggling, this is it some will celebrate and others wont. When you look at it theresa mays attempt to
do this, the historic defeat she suffered, after a general election borisjohnson suffered, after a general election Boris Johnson managing to suffered, after a general election borisjohnson managing to get it through relatively easy. It went through relatively easy. It went through eight stages in the house of commons. The house of lords, there we re commons. The house of lords, there were some changes made that they we re were some changes made that they were particularly upset were taken out of the bill, the rates of child refugees who have relations here in the uk for them to come here, that has been removed from the bell. The government says it wants it happen but it wanted to be put somewhere else in a different form of legislation. So those changes that the house of lords made were all overturned in the house of commons. That is of course the major difference between now and a year ago, the fact that the government now has a healthy majority of 80 means that most things can get through the house of commons, get through the house of commons, get through Parliament Without the wrangling that traditional warfare that we saw from at traditional wa rfa re that we saw from at traditional warfare that we saw for very many

all the stories after half past. The husband of Nazanin Zaghari ratcliffe, the british iranian woman being held in prison in iran, has been to downing street to meet with Boris Johnson for the First Time Since he became Prime Minister. Richard ratcliffe, accompanied by his daughter, gabriella, has not met with mr johnson since 2017 when he was foreign secretary and came under fire for wrongly suggesting nazanin was training journalists at the time of her arrest. In truth, no breakthrough. Good meeting, have an error, warm, Prime Ministers there, foreign secretary was there, talk quite openly about having trouble. I want to push forward in improving relations, some of the underlying issues to be resolved. They talked about how their wreck in places there. And also to say, listen, you need to be imposing a cost on iran for holding
innocent peoples leveraged, you have to be brave there as well. And i talked about this and i had conversations where the government is quite reluctant to put iran into a corner. I think you need to in this case. It isjust unacceptable to hold innocent people. Please look at ways of doing that. So we talked through generally. I dont think i come away thinking that she is coming out tomorrow, or even next week. Ill think carefully what i tell her on the phone on saturday about where the hope is to come. I think there remains that gap between my sense that the government needs to be tougher with iran, alongside improving relations generally, and the Foreign Office instinct to, you know, not have things escalate with an administration that is very keen to see the uk as an enemy and it doesnt want to be. The other thing, we gave the Prime Minister a little wallet that she had made in prison,
so he took that away and was touched. It was a gracious visit, so lam deeply touched. It was a gracious visit, so i am deeply appreciative of them giving up theirtime i am deeply appreciative of them giving up their time and all the staff that were there. The number of people being charged or cautioned by police in england and wales has fallen to a record low. But the latest figures, for the year to september, also show knife offences at a new high. The figures show knife crime has risen by 7 in the 12 months till last september. Thats around 44,000 offences or 5 knife crimes every hour of every day. Knife crime rose in the West Midlands by 13 , whilst it constitutes a third of all arrests in london. Meanwhile robberies are up 12 year on year. The largest total for eleven years. The number of robberies last year came to a shocking 82,000 a year. The home office also released figures today showing how many offences have led to a suspect
being arrested and charged. The figures a massive slump over the last five years to 7. 3 . Thats half the level it was five years ago. From the data we can see that one of the reasons for this decrease is that fewer victims are cooperating with the police. A woman believed to be the oldest female veteran of the second world has died at the age of 108. Ann robson from duns in the Scottish Borders, trained as a physiotherapist before becoming a teacher. World leaders are injerusalem this lunchtime to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the auschwitz death camp in poland. More than a Million People, most of them jewish, were murdered by the nazis at the camp during world war two. Our correspondent Barbara Plett usher is in jerusalem and sent this report. President s and princes, dozens of dignitaries, answering the call to remember. The Largest International gathering israel has ever hosted. Translation we remember not because we have a sense of supremacy and not in order tojust think about those atrocities the whole time and the injustice, no, we remember because we understand that if we do not remember then history can be repeated. Auschwitz was the most notorious of nazi germanys death camps. It has come to symbolise the holocaust, which killed 6 million jews. British troops who liberated Bergen Belsen were shocked by the industrial scale of death and trauma of those who survived, horrifying revelations which led to the pledge of never again. Those memories are preserved for israel in the hall of remembrance, putting faces and names
to the overwhelming numbers. Organisers and speakers are highlighting a message about the threat of anti semitism and the need to combat it, looking to the past but also the present. We must be prepared to stand as they dont. Against the wave of their times. We must be prepared to confront and expose the vile tide of anti semitism that is fuelling hate and violence all across the world, and violence all across the world, and we must stand together. Many Holocaust Survivors found refuge in israel. Some come together here for a class to sharpen their ageing memories. They want their experience to be a living one, even after they are gone, not a page in a history book, and so they tell their stories to
the young. My grandchildren, they are always asking more and more, how did we get by and what did we have to eat and what happened now and what happened later . I survived, but my parents didnt. The legacy of the war remains politically charged but the aim is to keep learning lessons from its unspeakable tragedies. Speaking at a ceremony, the prince of wales said the lessons of the holocaust are still relevant. Acts of unspeakable cruelty are still perpetrated around the world against people for reasons of their religion, their race or their
beliefs. Knowing as we do the darkness to which such behaviour leads, we must be vigilant in discerning these ever changing threats. We must be fearless in confronting falsehoods and resolute in resisting words and acts of violence. We must never rest in seeking to create Mutual Understanding and respect. We must attend the earth of our societies, so that the seas of division cannot ta ke so that the seas of division cannot take root and grow. And we must never forget that every human being is in the image of god, and even a single human life is like an entire
universe. The holocaust was an appalling jewish tragedy, but it was also a universal human tragedy. And one which we compound if we do not heed its lessons. On this day, in this place, and in memory of the millions who perished, let us recommit ourselves to tolerance and respect, and to ensuring that those who lived through this darkness will forever, as in the words of the prophet isaiah, be a light unto the nations, to guide the generations that follow. The prince of wales. You are

Thats all sport for now. Simon . Now on afternoon live, lets go nationwide, and see whats happening around the country in our daily visit to the bbc newsrooms around the uk. Jeff brown is in newcastle and can tell us more about an earthquake that struck the village of norton in teeside this morning and was felt several miles away. With you in just a second. And sally taylor is in southampton and will be perking us up with news that scientists have ground down the facts and say theyve found the way to make the perfect espresso. More from sally in a minute. But first to jeff. This earthquake registered between 2. 8 and 3 on the Richter Scale. Was there much damage . Fortunately not and it happened at about 6am. Some houses shook and police took 15 calls but fortunately no casualties or damage done. It is news because we dont expect this sort of thing to happen here. If you live injapan or the usa where earthquakes are more regular and common and more serious then an earthquake of three on the Richter Scale probably wouldnt raise an eyebrow but it is unusual over here and we have about three per year of this size in the uk and there was an earthquake not too far away from teesside in North Yorkshire last week, but it was very minorand quite yorkshire last week, but it was very minor and quite below ground, so we didnt really feel the effects. This one, bit closer to the surface and it was in norton near stockton on tees and was felt as far as far away as hartlepool and the
epicentre was pinpointed to a street called crooks barn lane and we sent mark out there to speak to residents and he caught up with a former gp who only found out about the quake thanks to someone on the other side of the world. I felt nothing. We slept through the whole thing. But, being retired you dont get up that early, but we had a whatsapp from my daughter in new zealand telling us that theyd asking if wed experience the earthquake. He wasnt the only one who missed it. I did a skype interview with the earthquake expert from the British Geological survey which will hear in a moment and at the end of it that sound engineer working here said i live in stockton and its the first ive heard of it and slept right through. We do work them hard here to be fair, but the timing of it is actually crucial to the amount of publicity generated and the huge response on social media. If it had
happened during the day, during rush hour, probably, because of the traffic noise and everything going on people might not have heard it and it wouldnt have registered at all. If it happened in the middle of the night it might have been enough to shake them out of bed butjust about everybody would have slept through it but because it was 6 30am, a lot of people getting out of bed, very quiet outside, that is why it got a bit of response. Of course, the people of teesside, what they want to know is what caused it and that is a question i put to a quy and that is a question i put to a guy called brian. The reason we get earthquakes in the uk is a result of tectonics. We are not at any of the boundaries of tectonic plates where most of the earthquakes occur but we are still being slowly squeezed as a result of the process, so it is being squeezed and deformed and it results in stress building up over long periods of time and eventually thatis long periods of time and eventually that is released in the form of earthquakes that happen from time to time. So there you go, small
earthquake gently rocks teesside and no damage, thank goodness, but a big talking point and of course a story we will be covering tonight on look north. As the earth ever moved under you . Not something i could say on live tv,. Nice to see you and thank you very much. Sally, stop sniggering, we are with you. We are talking about coffee and apparently it is all down to maths. It is down to maths, and its good to be with you, better latte than ever, and full of beans this afternoon because science is cutting through the froth. You know what it is like standing in line looking at the blackboard in a coffee shop trying to choose from myriad coffee blends and sizes but we have the la tay, the cappuccinos, flat whites, and thatis the cappuccinos, flat whites, and that is one of my favourites if we ever do have coffee together and so it goes on a camping inconsistent
brewing the perfect cup of coffee has always been considered an art and now it is down to a mathematical formula and its thanks to a Portsmouth University lecturer who has filtered out the numbers. Here he is. The short version of the recommendations are that you can afford to grind your coffee slightly more coarsely than you might expect and if you combine that with the down dosing of the coffee, putting less down dosing of the coffee, putting le ss coffe e down dosing of the coffee, putting less coffee grounds into the machine and using slightly less water you can make your espresso more reproducible and more affordable to use fewer beans and therefore make a saving. Lots of questions,. Please ask. How does he work this out . What it boils down to, as he says, it is
the daily grind on the maths behind it and this is your formula for your perfect extraction yield. If you can work that out you can make the perfect espresso. But there is a good thing to this because there is a coffee shop in america who tried this formula for him for a year and they are still using the recipe and a p pa re ntly they are still using the recipe and apparently they use fewer beans, ground more coarsely meaning that for every kilogram bag of coffee, using this method means you get 14 extra espresso shots, so it is a win, win. Coffee lovers and the bean cou nters win, win. Coffee lovers and the bean counters agree, a shot in the arm for the industry and the copy wont cost as much. Very good. I love the way youre standing in front of the board, pointing at it, saying look at this, and you have no idea what any one of those things means. No, i dont even understand the brackets,
trust me. I can understand the equal and plus size, but the great thing is, you hear about all of these Research Things people do when you think, how much money does it cost and how much of somebodys life has that cause somebody to spend and you think i would have liked to have done this and if they work on wine, i will do that one. How do you take it . Normally with ice. Sally, thank you very much, and jeff, good to see you very much, and jeff, good to see you and more tonight at 630 where the earth will be moving once more but that is nationwide tonight. Thank you very much. If youd like to see any more on those stories you can access them via the bbc iplayer, and a reminder that we go nationwide every weekday afternoon at 4 30pm here on afternoon live. Muhammad rodwan injured pc Stuart Outtens head and hand after officers stopped his van in leyton, east london. Our correspondent katharine carpenter has been in court at the old bailey and has the latest. Well, the scars are still visible on Stuart Outtens head from this savage machete attack. He was on patrol and it should have been a routine traffic stop on late in the high road last august and it turned into what he said was a fight for his life leyton high road. When the driver refused to get out of his vehicle and there was a scuffle and he started chopping at the officers head with a rusty, two foot long machete. He said he was acting in self defence because the officer had attacked him. Pc Stuart Outten

Just to update you on the breaking news, for people in scotland have been tested for the coronavirus and weve just heard from edinburgh Royal Infirmary which says that samples be taken
from three people who travelled from wuhan in china, the believe source of the virus and it is thought none is in of the virus and it is thought none isina of the virus and it is thought none is in a serious condition and at least one is a student. There is also believed to be a fourth patient in glasgow and the samples have been taken to a Testing Laboratory in london and Jonathan Blake has this update now from downing street and he says that the treatment for chinese nationals with suspected cases of coronavirus in scotland is purely precautionary. The Prime Ministers spokesman said nobody has tested positive and the government was in close contact with the who and other international partners. Officials and ministers will keep a close eye on this and we will let you know of any cobra meetings in the usual way. He added, cobra, you know of any cobra meetings in the usualway. He added, cobra, of course the usual government meeting when there is a sense of emergency contingency requirements, but so far
no meeting of cobra expected. That is the latest on that lead story we are bringing you this afternoon. Ina in a moment, the business news, but lets bring you headlines. Four people in scotland are being tested for suspected coronavirus after travelling to the uk from china where the virus first emerged. Downing street says the tests are precautionary and that the government is in close contact with the who and other international partners. A bbc news investigation shows seven babies may have died unnecessarily at an nhs trust in kent. Heres your business headlines on afternoon live. Morrisons is cutting 3000 managementjobs as it seeks to boost its staff presence on the shop floor. Britains fourth biggest Supermarket Chain plans to hire an additional 7,000 people to work as butchers,
bakers and fishmongers. The us treasury secretary has said he expects to complete a post brexit trade deal with the uk by the end of the year. Where have the markets ended up today . Its kind of the story of the week, simon. The ftse has been in the red all week, and continued today. And its been the coronavirus that has been weighing in. There really is that much fear . Whenever anything happens, that raises the risk of
business not going ahead or proceeding as you expect and investors see that as a negative. Weve seen strong declines in the price of oil because of the concerns about the impact on aviation and weve seen easyjet shares down sharply and the same for the parents of British Airways and oil stocks in general are always seen as volatile stocks, particularly risky stocks and thats why you see the Big Mining Companies performing quite poorly today. Lets talk about it in more detail. Dont mention the word uncertainty. I will pay you. cant, im afraid. There is either certainty or uncertainty. craig erlam is Senior Market analyst what are people so worried about the coronavirus for . We try to do it without using the word uncertainty
but its difficult because what we can with is notjust the impact this has on peoples health, it what impact it can have on the economy and the economies of the country is linked to it, the spread of the virus, of course and we are seeing a lot of that and weve Seen Movement in other countries. Its and its about visiting certain places and people not necessarily when the viruses break are wanting to be in crowded environments and it can have a greater impact with it spreads widely which was and weve seen plenty of it in china and when we look back 17 years and it has a greater impact. Lets talk about some of the other stories with a 20
increase in sales in the four months to the end of last year and it does illustrate that shoppers are actually still shopping, even if theyre doing it online rather than real world. We have to remember that a source in the last 18 months, the difficulty has been consumers or keeping up with changing trends asos. Its been the fact of the logistical issues with having too many orders and not necessarily being able to satisfy them and thats a problem many high streets outlets wa nt thats a problem many high streets outlets want and theyve come to terms with it and they are being rewarded with these extraordinary christmas sales and you have to say that they are now in a strong position going into 2020 while others are looking a little more shaky. The prospects for a uk and us trade deal with the secretary saying it can be wrapped up by the end of the year. What do you think markets are making of that . Are you holding
your breath or are there other local political things that could get an away way quest mark both sides would love a trade deal by the end of the year and it would make a Significant Impact all round for trump heading into the election and for the uk heading to the end of the transitional period. Its a lot to ask but if youre looking at the two economies, the two couldnt be much closer so you would think that compared to the other trade deals which both countries are negotiating, they should be the easiest. Indeed, and thank you for joining us. There is still the unknowable about what a democratic controlled house of representatives might do, do they want to give donald trump a win before they head to the election. We will be watching that. Yes, endlessly. No doubt. Thank you very much. See you later. Thousands of wringer muslims died and more than 700,000 fled to
bangladesh during Army Crackdown in 2017. The case launched by the african nation of the gambia called for emergency measures to be taken against Myanmar Military until a full investigation could be launched. Our reporter was at the hay consensus this report. The judges ruled that the states face a real risk of genocide and in order to ensure their right to exist, the uns top court issued for emergency measures for myanmar to prevent killings and destruction or any acts designed to stop Rohingya Muslims from giving birth. In other words, any action that violates the Genocide Convention to ensure its military doesnt commit acts of genocide and preserve and present prevent the genesis of genocide and then report every four months, then six months until the icj reaches a decision on the bigger question of whether myanmar is guilty of deliberately trying to destroy the
rohingya people, and that may not be for years. While the court does not have the power to enforce its rulings, human Rights Groups have urged governments and un bodies to weigh in to ensure that the emergency measures are enforced. More trees need be planted, and people need to eat less meat, if the uk is to meet its commitments to cut emissions to almost zero by 2050 thats according to the Governments Advisory Committee on climate change. It says taxes on meat and dairy might be necessary if people dont cut consumption voluntarily, and is calling for fundamental changes to the way land is used. Heres our environment analyst roger harrabin. Meat and milk have become political. The cows and sheep that feed us also belch the planet heating gas methane. The Committee Says we should all be eating a fifth less red meat and dairy produce by 2050. Thats the date for getting britains Climate Emissions to virtually zero. The changes we are advocating
in this report are transformational to the way we use land overall. We are talking about freeing up a minimum of a fifth of Agricultural Land across the uk. Thats a huge step. Many Livestock Farmers strongly object to that idea. It will harm profits. But other landowners see a potential opportunity. I think they absolutely recognise they need to be part of the solution and what we hearfrom our members as they are very much up for it. Its a huge transition and actually we are talking about making it over a quite short period of time, so i think they need careful and important guidance to enable them to do it. Environmentalists, meanwhile, say if high bakers can get rich on vegan sausage rolls, no one will notice a 20 drop in meat eating by mid century. Some will think this document could have been much more radical. Others will consider it a careful piece of work designed not to scare the horses, or the cows, or the sheep. Roger harrabin, bbc news. Coming up the news that five with ben brown. Now its time for a look at the weather with louise lear. Theres been no significant rain across the uk this week which is
great news but unfortunately the beautiful winter sunshine we had earlier in the week is starting to ease away and there is a lot of cloudy skies generally across the country. We still have the High Pressure with us but there is a lot of cloud feeding and across the high and the wind is picking up in the north and just a few favoured spots seeing brightness today, chiefly across the north east of england, as you can see, from york. Theres a few holes across eastern scotland and north east england and north wales but generally overcast through the afternoon and temperatures between eight and 10 degrees and a little bit of patchy rain once again up little bit of patchy rain once again up to the north west. That rain will continue to sink its way across scotland. Not much in the way of rain, but it pushes across the Scottish Borders into Northern Ireland by the end of the night and with that blanket of cloud around, again, we will see temperatures holding up above freezing and we might geta holding up above freezing and we might get a few breaks and there will be a few pockets of isolated frost but they will be few and far between, so generally speaking another murky starter friday with a good deal dry weather in the story
but the weather front reverts back to the west of scotland on friday and still taking the rain to western scotla nd and still taking the rain to western scotland and up into the western and Northern Isles as well. As we move out of friday into saturday, the High Pressure scoots off into the near continent allowing the weather front pushing on the isobars will squeeze together, the winds will pick up and it will be a breezy start to the weekend, but on the whole, saturday stays largely dry and probably the better of the two days through the weekend. That weather front will gradually push steadily south and east as we go through saturday night into sunday. Ahead of it, temperatures fairly uniform once again, between seven and 10 degrees, but if the front continues to move south and east, it will introduce colder air from the north west, so for a time, we will see a noticeable difference in the feel of the weather, but sunday looks particularly dismal and it will be quite breezy with outbreaks of rain pushing their way south and east and behind plenty of showers they are ice cool air kicking in and
some of those showers will turn wintry, chiefly to the Higher Ground, but may be in western scotla nd ground, but may be in western scotland we will see some at lower levels for a time but eight to 11 degrees is the overall height. Make the most of the weather over the next couple of days as it turns wet and windy next week. Today at 5pm four suspected cases of coronavirus in scotland all the victims are thought to have travelled there from china where the virus originated. Five suspects. It comes as three chinese cities are in lockdown tonight with citizens being told not to leave as the authorities it comes as three chinese cities are in lockdown tonight with citizens being told not to leave as the authorities try to contain the outbreak. Now, wherever you look, people are Wearing Masks. They are lining up to buy more masks. Some people are cancelling their trips, and there is a lot of concern.
