He preyed on young men as he prowled manchesters city centre before drugging them Police Believe there are many more victims whove yet to come forward. We believe theres over 190 victims that have been involved with sinaga, with Reynhard Sinaga, and 70 of them are still to be identified. It is going to be quite a ride across the northern half of the uk, gale force winds, heavy rain but also exceedingly mild. I will talk about just how mild it gets in half an hour. See you then. Also coming up. It is really heavy, and cool. Its a golden night for british stars in hollywood, as they scoop a host of awards in the first major event
of the awards season. Hello everyone this is afternoon live im simon mccoy. The most prolific rapist in british criminal history has been jailed for life and sentenced to a minimum of 30 years in prison, after being convicted of offences against 48 men. Reynhard sinaga was convicted of over 130 rapes of male victims in manchester. Police have linked sinaga to as a many as 190 potential victims. Danny savage is at Manchester Crown court. He can bring us more particularly on what thejudge had he can bring us more particularly on what the judge had to say. Yes, sinaga was convicted after four trials. There were so many victims they could not all be heard within one trial, so this process started backin one trial, so this process started back in 2018. It finished just
before christmas, with him being convicted again by a fourth jury for the offences he committed. Today he was sentenced and thejudge suzanne gothard qc said to him, you are an evil sexual predator who preyed upon young men who came into the city centre wanting nothing more than a good night out with their friends. Thejudge added that good night out with their friends. The judge added that one victim had described sinaga as a monster, telling him of the scale and enormity of your offending establishes this was an accurate description. The true scale of your offending may never be known, and she also said she doesnt think he will ever be safe to be released. He has to serve a minimum of 30 years, so has to serve a minimum of 30 years, so it will be at least 66 years old before he will be considered for release but the judge before he will be considered for release but thejudge indicating that may not happen then. My colleaguejudith moritz has the background to this case. This is Reynhard Sinaga, as he wanted the world to see him. His social media account is full of grinning photos of a student having fun. But sinaga has many faces,
and behind the mask lies the truth. A depraved monster, said by prosecutors to be the worlds worst rapist. The total number of offences that we have prosecuted is almost 160, over 48 victims, as far as the judicial process, probably anywhere in the world is concerned, hes the most prolific rapist that has come through the courts. In the world . I would say in the world, certainly in the british courts. Night after night, sinaga would leave his manchester flat to go and find victims. He took advantage of living in the city centre, amongst the nightclubs and bars, and he made the streets outside them his hunting ground. Sinaga would often wait for drunk men to come stumbling out of this nightclub, and then entice them around the corner to his flat, which was just next door. He would offer them somewhere to have a drink or phone a taxi and, on one occasion, it took him just 60
seconds to pick up a victim. More than 100 men made this journey, disappearing inside sinagas apartment block. Then, they would be offered spiked drinks and that was the last they would remember. Unconscious, the men were raped on this grubby mattress on the floor. When they woke up, they had no memory of what had happened. Sinaga would text his friends, boasting of sexual conquests. They thought he was joking when he quoted song lyrics about using a secret potion, of which one drop should be enough. But in fact, the drug wore off early on one man, who woke up whilst being raped. He fought back and when the police were called, they seized sinagas phone. They could not believe what they saw on it. The rapist had filmed each of his attacks. They found hundreds of hours of video. This is an absolutely unprecedented case. Looking at that amount of evidence
is challenging in itself. That is equivalent to 1,500 dvd films. We believe there is over 190 victims, that have been involved with sinaga, with Reynhard Sinaga, and 70 of them are still to be identified, approximately. The men who were traced were given support at this centre in manchester. Helped to cope with the trauma of being told they were the victims of rapes they could not remember. Some men found it very difficult to process, some men have been unable to function within a family setting and have had to leave home. Some men have suffered with their mental health, to the point where some men have been suicidal. How is it possible that someone could be assaulted like this and not know . You may have had alcohol, you may have had a drug, and you may have been sexually assaulted, but there may not have been any physical injuries to see. And if you havent got any physical injuries, then you may not even suspect
you have been sexually assaulted. Reynhard sinaga prowled the streets for years before he was caught. His victims have said they hope he rots in hell and never leaves prison. He has never explained his crimes. The rapist considered a mystery, as well as a monster. Danny, a lot of people raising questions about why it took so long for him to get arrested. Yeah, well, basically he came across as the Good Samaritan to all of his victims. He was trawling the streets for them but he would sort of take advantage of intoxicated young men who might have run out of charge of their phone or who needed a drink or to call for a taxi, he would get them back to his flat and he would drug them, but he would drag them so effectively that they wouldnt recall the attack and they would wa ke recall the attack and they would wake up having experience nothing really, not knowing what had happened to them. Some of them
literally shook his hand afterwards and said thanks for looking after me and said thanks for looking after me and left, and knew nothing about the attack until the police came banging on their doors months later, because they found Video Evidence of those attacks taking place. And it was only because one of his victims, that 18 year old, woke up midway through being attacked, and fought him off, grabbed his iphone and ran away to the police and reported him that it all came pouring out. So for two and a half years he was preying on men in manchester who were oblivious to what was happening to them, and they might have been a few in there that knew what had happened but were too ashamed to reported, but were too ashamed to reported, but basically most ofjust didnt know. And then we have a trial process that didnt begin until 2018. There were four trials in all, because there were 48 victims he was accused of attacking and they couldnt be heard in one trial, so thatis couldnt be heard in one trial, so that is all taken a long time, so it was only today this could be reported because it was sentencing with him being given a minimum sentence of 30 years. It could have gone on for much longer have that
young men not woken up mid attack and done something about it and reported it to police, that young man. That is why police are worried there are many more men, going back longer than 2015 to 2017 that these trials focused on, who he may have attacked because this man has been in the country, he was a student from indonesia, he has been in the country since 2007 and there are concerns you may have attacked other people in other parts of the uk where he was living, people who have not yet come forward or again who are oblivious to what has happened to them and they will be encouraged if they have any inkling, any suspicion, to contact their local police because Police Believe they can link this man to 190 men, although they have only prosecuted him over 48, so there are more people out there potentially. Thank you, danny savage. At an earlier sentencing, the judge said she was sure that sinaga had used a form of date rape drug, such as ghb. Under the misuse of drugs acts, ghb is identified as a class c drug. It carries a sentence of two years in prison,
oran unlimited fine, and if taken, it can reduce peoples inhibitions. In response to the sentencing, the home secretary priti patel has said. Joining me now is patrick strudwick, lgbt editor of buzzfeed news. Patrick led a Major Investigation for channel 4s dispatches on the epidemic of Sexual Violence, drugging, and deaths caused by ghb drugs. And just to pick up on that point, patrick, that priti patel makes, there is a loophole in the law that means, well, those who want to use these types of drugs can access them almost in industrial quantities. Nel yes, thats right im afraid, simon. What we have is a situation where i think many people would see it as the worst of all worlds. What we
haveit the worst of all worlds. What we have it as two separate drugs which are almost identical. You have ghb, which is prohibited to buy and sell in all circumstances but we also have gbl, which is the precursor, which means that when you take it, it becomes ghb in the body. Now that is also an industrial cleaner. And for those purposes, it is legal to buy and sell. This loophole that you refer to is being exploited on a huge scale, and it means that a whole range of bad actors can sell gbl in large quantities through dating apps, through the internet, and even on facebook, as we have found, and people can buy it in large quantities. And the damage that can cause is what we are seeing
played out today. Ifind it astonishing that priti patel only now is coming round to the reality of what this drug and the government public response to it. I say i am astonished, because only a few months ago, i come as part of my investigation with channel 4 news, with dispatches and buzzfeed news, approach the government asking them to ta ke approach the government asking them to take part in my documentary, and not a single government minister was prepared to speak. Now they have decided they need to do something. Looking at classification is one of the elements that needs to be looked at absolutely, but there is a whole range of other things the government, the police and other agencies need to do as a matter of urgency. Some would say emergency, to deal with the scale of this epidemic. We found in our survey,
the largest ever survey of gay and bisexual men who take g, we are talking a survey sample of around 2700 men, that over a quarter, 28 have been subjected to rape or Sexual Assault whilst under the influence of ghb. It is an enormous number, an enormous proportion, and it needs to be acted on. People need help coming forward, and i would also add the police have got to make clear that when someone comes forward , clear that when someone comes forward, having been raped or sexually assaulted on ghb or gbl that they themselves come victim, will not ever be investigated for drugs offences. 0ne will not ever be investigated for drugs offences. One of the problems with the Current System is that people are reluctant to come forward , people are reluctant to come forward, because sometimes they have consented to taking the drug but not sex, so if they are raped they will
not go to the police for fear of being prosecuted themselves. When you use the term g, youre talking about both gbh and gbl in effect. Although they are identical, they are different. Yes. This was a recreational drug of the 90s which we are now seeing recreational drug of the 90s which we are now seeing being used in a far more sinister way, in rapes and in some murder cases as well and yet it is still a class sea drug. So what needs to happen . Well, certainly there needs to be a thorough review of the evidence. The evidence has emerged gradually over the course of 20 years. The work i have been doing over the last three yea rs, have been doing over the last three years, and in particular in the last year, has identified an escalation, an escalation both in terms of the sheer amount of usage, but also the weaponisation of this drug. And also the addiction to the stroke. There
needs to be a Public Information campaign. The government has to act on that now. Because most members of the public know nothing about it. Most people dont know how to protect themselves, they dont know what to do if they do become addicted. If you go cold turkey, the act of withdrawing from it without medical supervision can itself be lethal. So there is a whole range of things the government needs to do and to act upon to prevent this drug being weaponised further. Patrick, really good to talk to you and thank you much for your time. And details of organisations offering information and support with Sexual Violence are available at bbc. Co. Uk actionline, or you can call free at any time to hear recorded information on 0800 077 077. Vast crowds have gathered in tehran for the funeral of Qasem Soleimani, the iranian general killed by us forces during an air strike in iraq on friday. His successor has promised vengance for the killing. President trump has repeated his threat to attack iranian cultural sites, if iran does retaliate. In the past few hours borisjohnson has spoken to his iraqi counterpart with the two leaders agreeing to Work Together to find a diplomatic way forward in the region. 0ur Diplomatic CorrespondentJames Landale reports chanting. If you want an idea of how Qasem Soleimani was seen in iran, just look at this. Hundreds of thousands thronging the streets of tehran today, to mourn his death. The iranian general may have been seen as a brutal military commander in the west, but here, soleimani was seen as a national hero. And now, a martyr, after his assassination by the us. The general was often
described as the second most important man in iran. This morning, the most powerful, the Supreme LeaderAyatollah Khamenei, said prayers over his coffin and wept at the loss of the man who controlled irans network of allies and proxy forces across the middle east. The crowds called for vengeance, and the man who has replaced soleimani as head of the elite revolutionary guards Quds Force Esmail Ghaani promised iran would remove us forces from the region. God has promised to avenge soleimanis assassination, he said, there will definitely be some actions. In an address broadcast on satellite television, soleimanis daughter warned President Trump that her fathers death would have consequences. America and zionism, she said, should know that my fathers martyrdom has led to a greater
awakening of the peoples consciousness and the resistance front and will bring about dark days for them. 0vernight, President Trump return to washington from florida, promising a major retaliation if iran attacked us forces in response to the killing of soleimani. And again, he threatened to strike iranian cultural sites, something that critics insist would be against international law. So far, irans most significant action has to been to weaken even further its deal to restrict its nuclear capability, saying it will no longer accept any limit on its ability to enrich uranium. But us and allied forces in the region have been put on standby for military retaliation that could potentially include attacks on tankers in the gulf. Amid growing fears of violent miscalculation. Both sides are fundamentally underestimating the strength and resolve on the other side. The iranians have thought for some time that america just wants to get out of the middle east and is not really committed long term to the region and they can get away with their proxy wars. But the americans too have been predicting for a long time that iran will come to its knees because of economic pressure, and the regime has held out. That is the real danger we face at the moment. Today, the Prime Minister is meeting senior ministers and advisers in downing street to discuss the uks response. In a joint statement with his french and german counterparts, mrjohnson said there was an urgent need for de escalation and called on all parties to exercise utmost restraint. Live to the iranians capital, because those scenes, it is quarter to six in the evening in tehran, quarter past six, there are as you can still see thousands of people on the streets for the funeral of the iranians military commander Qasem Soleimani, and erans Supreme Leader
ayatolla h soleimani, and erans Supreme Leader ayatollah leading prayers, and seem to be weeping in that report. Live to washington and our correspondent gary 0donoghue. We hear from we hearfrom former we hear from former foreign secretaryjeremy we hear from former foreign secretary jeremy hunt saying we hear from former foreign secretaryjeremy hunt saying that the concern is for unforeseen consequences but presumably that is something donald trump and his team would have discussed . |j something donald trump and his team would have discussed . I am sure they did. The thing about unforeseen consequences is did. The thing about unforeseen consequences is you cant always foresee what they are going to be. They dont know which way iran will retaliate. There are various options and scenarios that would have gone through and the president will have been given those scenarios were stopped they would have said to him, look, if we do this, they could do this. Those options range through a hole direct concentration, which i think it is unlikely, through the use of proxies in the region, like his brother and Islamic Jihad use of proxies in the region, like his brother and islamicjihad and people like that, through to other kinds of actions, perhaps softer
targets in europe and here in the homeland. 0ne targets in europe and here in the homeland. One thing the administration he does believe is that sanctions that have been imposed on iran have weakened the country significantly, and it points of course to the demonstrations that took place over the Economic Situation inside iran as being indicative of a problem the iranians have with their own public opinion. Through the use of proxies in the region, like his brother. If there was any resistance to the regime internally, than the killing of soleimani has to some extent by the little bit brought the nation together. Good to talk you, gary 0donoghue. There are fears that bushfires in the australian states of victoria and New South Wales could merge to create a huge mega blaze. Light rain over the weekend brought a brief respite but hotter weather is again forecast, which is likely to make the fires worse. 0ur correspondent Shaima Khalil has been to the coastal town of eden, south of canberra, where many have fled to escape the flames. The rain came as a welcome respite. People in the fire zones in southern and eastern australia finally got what they had wanted for weeks. A bit of a breather for these firefighters ahead of hotter weather to come. When officials said the blazes would take off again. The picture in the fishing town of eden is very different from that on the weekend. This is what it looked like on saturday night. Many people left. 0thers stayed, seeking safety by the water. Eden wharf became a makeshift Evacuation Centre when the fires came close to this town. People came here, they sheltered in boats, in cars, and some in the open air to be close to the water. We have a lull in the weather. The temperatures and the winds have dropped, we have rain which many people have been telling me they have been praying for, but we know this is not going to last, authorities expect worse conditions later in the week. That has really been the story of these fires. There are more to come and people are living in limbo. Some residents have left their homes, not knowing if they will be there when they go back. Chris and richard camped out onto the football ground, well prepared, but unsure and confused about what to do next. I think everybody who is here would lie if they say they were not scared, if they were not anxious in regard to where they are going now. Basically, the uncertainty as to what happens when the fire does come through, how fast is it going to come,
if the wind really picks up and comes over that hill, it will be coming like a fireball. It isjust a waiting game. But we will get there, doesnt matter. What are you waiting for . For it to stop. And it is notjust people being displaced because of the fires. In one neighbouring town, jimmy the koala bear has been taken from his usual home at the local Animal Sanctuary and is now in the back garden of his keepers house. Most of the animals here were evacuated ahead of the fires, last weekend. Some, likes these echidnas, have already been brought back. They were all getting quite agitated and stressed. If we do have to evacuate again at the end of the week, well, at least they have had a few days of respite. There are fears that nearly half a billion animals are being directly
affected by the fires, which continue to rip through the bushland. The rain has given people here a chance to pause and reflect, if only for a few days, but they are also bracing for what the next wave of fires will bring. Indonesia is braced for further heavy downpours, as authorities said flooding and landslides caused by record rains have killed at least 66 people in and around jakarta. Whole neighbourhoods in the capital which is home to around 30 Million People were submerged last week by floodwaters, forcing tens of thousands into temporary shelters. A head teacher has appeared in court, charged with murdering his wife and her new partner at a house in derbyshire on new years day. 39 year old rhys hancock is accused of killing Helen Hancock and martin griffiths, who were found by police at her home in duffield in derbyshire. The labour pa rtys ruling body is meeting to finalise the rules and timetable for the contest to chooseJeremy Corbyns successor as leader. Five mps emily thornberry,
Jess Phillips, sir keir starmer, clive lewis and lisa nandy have so far entered the running. Shadow business secretary rebecca long bailey is also expected to announce her bid. The disgraced hollywood producer, Harvey Weinstein, is on trial this afternoon charged with rape and sexual assualt. Jurors will be selected more than two years after the allegations against him first emerged. Some 80 women have accused mr weinstein of Sexual Misconduct, but this trial relates to just two of them. He denies all claims of non consensual sex. Well, lets speak to nada tawfik, whos at the court in new york. He has arrived there recently. Yes, thats right. Harvey weinstein arrived right outside of this courthouse here in new york, accompanied by his attorneys and a few others. He used a walker to walk into the court full stop he has recently recovered from a back injury, a surgery that he had, but
many have been very critical, saying he is trying to recast himself as a victim ahead of this pivotal trial. The pre trial matters will get under way shortly here. There is a number of media outlets. The press has thronged around women, other women accusers, who have come to support the two women who are part of this trial. They want to show solidarity with these two women and they also wa nt to with these two women and they also want to have their voices heard. They will be speaking shortly, talking about how critical this trial is to other women who might decide to break their silence on Sexual Assault and see that real change is possible, and also as a sign to other predators, if they believe Harvey Weinstein is a predator, that they will be held accountable. For Harvey Weinstein of course, this is also a pivotal moment. He could face life in prison if he is convicted of these five felony charges, including rape and predatory Sexual Assault, but certainly this will also have a
profound effect on the me too movement, which his downfall sparked more than two years ago. Coming up in 15 minutes. Success for british stars in hollywood as they scoop a host of awards in the first major event of the awards season. Ill be talking about the Golden Globes with entertainment journalist caroline frost. Time for a look at the weather. We were just reporting, a we werejust reporting, a brief respite in australia, with some rain bringing water to areas that desperately need it. Thats right. The heat is obviously going to return in the next few days or so, but the drop in the temperature we have seen the last few days has been absolutely extraordinary. Let me just show you what has been happening in one particular place. This is in canberra. They beat their all time record which was back in the late 60s, 42. 2 degrees. They actually got up to 44 celsius, which
from a climatological point of view, thatis from a climatological point of view, that is actually smashing records, because normally we beat records by point something of a degree, this is by almost pretty much of degrees. And then when that heatwave ended, within a space of 24 hours, the temperature dropped down to 21. 7 degrees, so that is absolutely staggering, and it is also not the only base that expensed a huge temperature drop, some areas expensed even a bigger drop, which is absolutely insane. Never mind where these places are, it is across southern parts of australia, some of these temperatures occurred on the 3rd of january, some these temperatures occurred on the 3rd ofjanuary, some on the fourth, but the point im trying to make is there are places where we saw around a30 there are places where we saw around a 30 degrees drop. So that is pretty staggering. So yes, a temporary end to the heatwave. But symptomatic of Climate Change . This is quite often what we talk about, because Climate Change is not just what we talk about, because Climate Change is notjust about the High Temperatures, but also occasional other records being broken, like low temperatures. That is about the
weather systems being more extreme, the jet stream being weather systems being more extreme, thejet stream being perhaps weather systems being more extreme, the jet stream being perhaps a little bit more unpredictable, chaotic, that is exactly what we have been seeing across the south. So here is that cool air coming in from the south, from the southern ocea ns from the south, from the southern oceans here in australia, and just like we often show you here the jet strea m like we often show you here the jet stream across the north atlantic, there is obviously a jet stream on there is obviously a jet stream on the other side of the globe as well, and it too, just like ours, as these ripples and undulations, and this jet stream plays a role as well and it may well be the case that these extreme patterns in the jet stream have led to some of these huge swings in the temperature. I dont know why that is not white. It has not warmed up like that quite yet. That is what we are seeing in australia, those huge temperature variations, and then by thursday, friday, it looks as though, u nfortu nately friday, it looks as though, unfortunately those temperatures will be skyrocketing again, so it is an ongoing pattern we are seeing. It
is terrible. Nothing so dramatic here, but a bit of a change coming . Yes, and on the topic of temperatures, we are potentially going to be seeing some very High Temperatures for us this time of the yearin temperatures for us this time of the year in scotland, tomorrow. I dont think they will be record breaking but they could be within a couple of degrees or so. So that is pretty extraordinary as well and again it is that pattern of those High Temperatures we are seeing around the globe. This is what is happening right now. A storm just south of iceland. The weather front is moving across the uk right now. It is bringing some rainfall and also some strong winds will stop the wins have been gusting about 50 to 60 mph in some places as well. These are temperatures around the rush hour, so temperatures around the rush hour, so the skies are clearing. Temporarily i have to say tonight and into tomorrow, the winds will fall flat calm in some areas, before by the end of the night they start picking up again, because there is another storm south of iceland and we are feeling the effects of it, and we will across northern parts of
the country, across scotland and Northern Ireland we are talking, and parts of northern england, howling gales through the course of tuesday. You can start counting the isobars, an awful lot of them, which means strong winds. There is are drawing up strong winds. There is are drawing up some incredibly mild airfrom the south, and quite often the situation, we get some High Temperatures, particularly to the eastern side of mountains, there is a particular phenomenon called the phone effect. It bumps up the temperatures by a few degrees. Too complicated meteorology to go into it in complicated meteorology to go into itina complicated meteorology to go into it in a forecast like this, but suffice to say wind and rain, the story of the day tomorrow, in some places winds gusting in excess of 70 mph, easily 50, 60 inland. In some spots around the moray firth, we could see temperatures nudging up to around 16, 17 degrees. Now we are in january, and we are getting temperatures of 15, 16 celsius potentially. That is not necessarily good news, of course, across our pa rt good news, of course, across our part of the world. Here is wednesdays forecast, still blowing across the northern half of the country, but the south never really gets rid of that mild air, soil thinking is that in areas like london were talking about 14 again injanuary, london were talking about 14 again in january, it should london were talking about 14 again injanuary, it should be close to Something Like six, seven or 8 degrees but it looks as though by the time we get to the end of the week, temperatures will be nudging back down to where they really should be. South africa are chasing a test record 438 to beat england, what chance do they have . South africa need 438, the world record is 418. They declared their second innings on 391 for 8 leaving south africa that chase. If you are an england cricket fan, you get nervous early on. 90 1 now. Meanwhile, australian great shane warne is auctioning off his baggy green cap to raise money for those affected by the bushfires in his country. The caps are stuff of Australian Sporting legend and as its something warne wore throughout his career its expected to fetch an awful lot of money. The former england captain Michael Vaughan made a bid of around £15,000. But the current highest bid is more than £166,000. 0n the subject of those fires in australia, less
than a fortnight before the start of the Australian Open tennis, melbourne lies under a blanket of bushfire haze. Today the tournament organiser craig tiley has said theyll be closely monitoring air quality, while hoping that the tournament will go ahead at the end ofjanuary. And var in the headlines again, whats happened this weekend . Pitchside monitors have been lonely things. Premier League Referees told not to use them. Yesterday in the fa cup michael 0liver used the screen to send off Crystal Palaces luka milivjevic in their fa cup defeat to derby. Alan shearer says the premier league needs to take note. He was the face of the campaign to instate the ar in the premier league. It is about time it happened because it cant be a coincidence that it has never happened in the premier league. We started in august, now injanuary, not one referee has been to the pitch side monitor and that is what is needed. I am not saying he should go there regularly, but in terms of making and getting the correct decision and his on field decision, i think it is a key and hopefully that is the first of many. The draw for the fourth round of the fa cup will take place tonight, ahead of arsenals game against leeds united. The arsenal manager mikel arteta captained the club the last time these two sides met in the fa cup 2012, but it was a returning hero who stole the show. Thierry henry scored the winner at the emirates in his first appearance since re joining on a short loan from the new york red bulls. Arteta says he wants to continue his sides recent revival tonight. Its a competition that is very attached to this Football Club in recent years, and we have to take it very seriously and we have to try to go to the next round. The way they play, the manner they behave, i follow them, for a long time, i know how tough it is going to be to play against them. Arsenal against leeds united is live on bbc one from 7. 30pm tonight. You can also listen on bbc radio 5 live. Thats all the sport for now. Well, british talent has triumphed at the Golden Globes. Phoebe waller bridge, all bets were off after the emmys, the huge clutch of gongs she went home with, she has done the same thing with two Golden Globes and she is clearly a global superstar, putting her name to the bond script, a huge amazon deal, she can do no wrong. 0livia colman a bet of a surprise but the others, Taron Egerton for rocket man edging out fellow brits. The other brit involved last night and there was some nervousness was Ricky Gervais is. How did he do . There was some nervousness during the service. Is. How did he do . There was some nervousness during the servicelj is. How did he do . There was some nervousness during the service. I am thinking more today, it was a bit of a pantomime. It is his fifth time. And last . Always has last. Hes like daniel craig, always saying he wont do it again. But fifth time out, he knows what he is about. It is a
shock jock shtick and people knows what he is about. It is a shockjock shtick and people in the room have gone from being shocked and horrified asking who is this strange british man insulting us to something more familiar. With the various stars having the grace to chuckle a long even when birds are coming their way. You mentioned brad pitt, Quentin Tarantino anti had better reason to celebrate, 0nce upona time better reason to celebrate, 0nce upon a time in hollywood . Golden globes have all these categories and what happens is as award season goes on, they get shoehorned in and for fewer categories. So when it comes to the next ones you will be looking at things like the joker, Marriage Story irishman competing for fewer plaudits. Last night was a night for many people to go with something. And eltonjohn would be happy . Many people to go with something. And elton john would be happy . Taron egerton will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of ramy malik after last yea rs the footsteps of ramy malik after last years win. Is this performance in the same league . It had a lot of heart. He sang all the songs, Taron Egerton gave it everything however i think the problem may be it is almost too similar and for many people it may feel a bit of repeat but it will have done him no harm on the world stage. He hasjumped into the world stage. He hasjumped into the super league in that one role and he even accompanied eltonjohn on his recent tour, that will show no harm at all. Whacking phoenix and his remarkable performance injoker was another controversial one. He has put in a solid body of work. Never since gladiator people realise he had come out from his brothers shadow and since then we have seen thejohnny cash biopic so we know he
is capable of great things. He is almost an Old School Actor who loses himself in the role but hes very charismatic in his own right. 0ne himself in the role but hes very charismatic in his own right. One of the few people took to the side last night, who went political and went on about basically they have to change. Ricky gervais is made great fun of them but phoenix suggested they stop getting planes from palm springs which is down the road. Last night saw all the glamour of the Golden Globes celebrating the seemingly endless catalogue of entertainment that is now available to most of us whenever we want it at the simple click of a button. But it can have its downside, according to doctors, whove now begun treating people for the first reported cases of Binge Watching addiction. Lets get more on this from psychotherapist hilda burke,
talking about Binge Watching television, really . It is an addiction . I think it has many of the hallmarks of addiction. People typically, some of them report getting in the way of other things that are important for them to do. Getting fit, applying for a newjob, updating their cv, spending more time with family, partners and friends, so that, it isnt defined 01 friends, so that, it isnt defined or identified, recognised as an addiction officially, but it takes a long time for behaviour to be recognised by the psychotherapeutic community is an addiction. For instance, gaming has only recently been identified so it takes awhile to see the impact, Something Like this which is quite new, strained media hasnt been that long so for it to be monitored and observed as to whether it impacts a persons life in such a serious way, i am
certainly seeing it impact is likelys life and behaviour, getting on the way. That is the bottom line, getting in the way of things they would rather be doing. In the 80s and 90s, thomas member dallas and dyna stay where the anticipation of the next week was part of it . Absolutely. Anticipation is a huge pa rt absolutely. Anticipation is a huge part of pleasure and enjoyment and thatis part of pleasure and enjoyment and that is what differentiates stream tv services from conventional Way Television programmes were shared, wea kly at Television Programmes were shared, weakly at a certain time you got one episode and had to wait the default is that the next episode is loading so we are is that the next episode is loading so we are passively being fed content in a way that may, when we set out to watch an episode of my favourite series four hours later where did the tango . So the way it is being delivered and the platforms
upon which people are watching these series, mobile phone, tablet it can be everywhere. 0n the bus, train, tube, one of my clients got a waterproof cover for his phone so he could watch a series in the shower. So it is encroaching on our lives. In areas we were never used to watching tv in. The idea of watching the news in the shower has sent a shower down something. Thank you for that. Not a great start to the year, this is the plane has been grounded since last march. Because of two fatal crashes that killed 346 people. This delay has already cost the company name billion dollars, there are now reports in the us that regulators there have found what they have called a potentially catastrophic wiring problem with the plane and this could of course really hurt it getting back in the air . It was originally ashley Software Issue . Notjust originally ashley Software Issue . Not just the originally ashley Software Issue . Notjust the faa but other regulators around the world are looking at this plane other oh under a microscope added has been reported that they have come up with findings to suggest a potential problem with the wiring on the work around that is being used to get this plane back in the year. See what the stock market makes of that. |j in the year. See what the stock market makes of that. I dont think it will be very kind. Lets cross to new york. Picking up what simon was saying, the markets are trading in the red, that is a separate issue but boeings share prices down nine tenths of a percent, this report came out on sunday and making waves. What we have learned so far as the New York Times is reporting there are these bundles of wires that basically relate to the tail of the plane, and there are two bundles
that are too close together which could potentially lead to a short circuit which has the potential to lead to a fatal crash if the pilots dont respond correctly. This question of how the pilots respond has been key, not just in this law they are looking into, but in the system we know was at the heart of the two crashes. The faa has confirmed the investigation is going on, so has boeing but has said it is premature to say what effects, if any, would be needed. They have talked about the possibility of separating the wires, encasing them in something so there is not this risk of short circuiting, they are still investigating the issue at the moment but the company is confident and will not be too expensive or difficult to fix. Do you think this could be a real delay in getting the plane back up in the air .
could be a real delay in getting the plane back up in the air . I think if you go back to the reaction, the share price reaction here, there is clearly concerned that it could have a knock on effect and that all of these things that keep being found as regulators, the Company Engineers go over this plane, it will add to delays. At the moment, the assumption is it will be back in the air in the spring. If you look at the schedule of Companies Like american airlines, they certainly at the moment are factoring the plane being back in the air, site in april, United Airlines pushing the schedule back to early summer. But each time you get news like this, it will raise concerns about the timeline and of course all of this against the backdrop of change at the company where you have a new chief executive who starts next week. He will be keen to try and address these issues and get things moving forward. Headache for him, michelle, thank you so much for joining us. The ftse has been rattled by tensions in the middle east following the assasination by america of a top Iranian Military leader. Thats led to a spike in oil prices because of fears of possible disruption to oil supplies. Oil Companies Like bp have seen their share price rise. But airlines like easyjet have seen their Share Price Fall because Higher Oil Prices could hit their bottom line. President trump threatening severe sanctions on iraq after. The mother of a british teenager found guilty of lying about being gang raped in cyprus has backed calls for a tourism boycott of the country. The 19 year old s mother said she wanted foreign secretary dominic raab to get involved personally in the case, which could see her daughterjailed for as long as a year. Shell be sentenced tomorrow. Lucy williamson reports. Why a british teenager came to cyprus for a holiday last summer isnt hard to see. Why shes been kept here since then is a question thats divided the island. Last week, she was convicted of lying to police after she withdrew a rape accusation against 12 israeli men. Shes due to be sentenced on tuesday. 0ne formerjustice minister believes it was too harsh to prosecute and convict her for retracting a rape allegation. Hes called for the attorney general to show leniency. We believe that she has been punished enough. Shes suffered enough. Therefore, its time that her case is being closed and the young lady returns to her home in england. But others believe this isnt about a single case, but a deeper problem in cyprus that police here routinely encourage women to drop allegations of sexual or domestic violence. I feel ashamed, i feel embarrassed, i feel angry. I feel that the withdrawal of her testimony, what is called retraction, was obtained under immense force and all of us in the network, talking with women, victims of rape, have seen this happening again and again and again. The hotel where she stayed is closed for the winter. It attracts groups of young people from across the world, drawn to irons party
culture. But the teenagers mother has said this simply isnt safe. British supporters have called for a boycott of cyprus and some people here on the island fear that a long appeal process could harm cypruss reputation and its tourist economy. On tuesday, well hear whether the Legal Process that has gripped this island is over. Will it end with the judgement of one british woman or the judgement of cyprus itself . Lucy williamson, bbc news, cyprus. Now its time for a look at the weather. We can cross the newsroom. Wet, windy and mild over the next couple of days. Not everywhere but certainly for some of us it will be way above average, in fact it is the gales that are the story for the next 48 hours across the north of england, scotland as well. Astron to

Jailed for a minimum of 30 years the most prolific rapist in british history Reynhard Sinaga is described in court as an evil sexual predator and a monster. He preyed on young men as he prowled manchesters city centre before drugging them Police Believe there are many more victims whove yet to come forward. We believe theres over 190 victims that have been involved with sinaga, with Reynhard Sinaga, and 70 of them are still to be identified. Huge crowds gather in tehran to mourn the iranian general, killed by us forces britain urges restraint as both sides issue fresh threats against each other. Good afternoon again, Simon Forsstrom just the one wicket so far as they try to win the second test against south africa in cape town. The home side have a world record target of 438 to reach if they can. They are 106 1 towards the end of day four. Thanks, hugh. A big change in the weather coming. The story in the uk, the wind, the rain, the mild weather, hardly a story when you think about australia, we will be focusing on that as well in around half an hour. Thank you, tomas. Also coming up. This is really heavy and cool its a golden night for british stars in hollywood, as they scoop a host of awards in the first major event of the awards season. Hello, everyone this is afternoon live im simon mccoy. The most prolific rapist in british criminal history has been jailed for life and sentenced to a minimum if 30 years in prison after being convicted of offences against 48 men. Reynhard sinaga was convicted of over 130 rapes of male victims in manchester. Police have linked sinaga to as many as 190 potential victims. Judith moritz reports. This is Reynhard Sinaga, as he wanted the world to see him. His social media account is full of grinning photos of a student having fun. But sinaga has many faces, and behind the mask lies the truth. He would offer them somewhere to have a drink or phone a taxi and, on one occasion, it took him just 60 seconds to pick up a victim. More than 100 men made this journey, disappearing inside sinagas apartment block. Then, they would be offered spiked
drinks and that was the last they would remember. Looking at that amount of evidence is challenging in itself. That is equivalent to 1,500 dvd films. We believe there is over 190 victims, that have been
involved with sinaga, with Reynhard Sinaga, and 70 of them are still to be identified, approximately. And if you havent got any physical injuries, then you may not even suspect you have been sexually assaulted. Reynhard sinaga prowled the streets for years before he was caught. His victims have said they hope he rots in hell and never leaves prison. He has never explained his crimes. The rapist considered a mystery, as well as a monster. Earlier, judith gave more information on what thejudge said in court. Well, dejudge, suzanne gothard qc, described Reynhard Sinaga as a monster, and looking at him, as he stood in the dock, she said he seemed to be enjoying the trial process , eve n seemed to be enjoying the trial process, even as he was standing to be sentenced, and actually i found sitting in court, looking at him, its very hard to get your head around the scale of offending, looking at that slight, very slim, young looking, younger than his age looking man, and to take in the fact that the authorities are saying he is the most prolific rapist in britain. Suzanne gotha rd is the most prolific rapist in britain. Suzanne gothard said you are an evil sexual predator, she said, you are a deeply disturbed and
perverted individual with no sense of reality. We have only been able to bring you the detail of this case today because so enormous is the scale of his offending there has been four separate trials and it is only today we can report this at the end of the fourth trial. This prosecution is looked at the case of 48 of sinagas victims, but that is no means the total. We heard from thejudge today no means the total. We heard from the judge today that the Police Believe they could be as many as 195 people, they have film footage of 195 men who have been attacked by sinaga. Beyond that, they say, it may never be possible to know the total number, and the other thing we have just found in the last few minutes is that the home secretary has said she first of all extends her condolences to the victims of sinaga, but has also now been looking particularly at the drug involved in this, thought to be ghb
or something similar to it, and has ordered that a review into whether controls around those sorts of drugs are tough enough, that that review should be expedited, so this is a case which begs some terrible questions, one of which is how could it have gone on for so long without this having been uncovered, and the judge here paid tribute to the bravery of the victims, who have been able to come through the courts and give their evidence and help bring sinaga tojustice. And details of organisations offering information and support with Sexual Violence are available at bbc. Co. Uk actionline, or you can call free at any time to hear recorded information on 0800 077 077. And Greater Manchester police are asking people who think they might be a victim to contact them on 0800 092 0410. Vast crowds have gathered in tehran for the funeral of Qasem Soleimani, the iranian general killed by us forces during an air strike in iraq on friday. His successor has promised vengance for the killing. President trump has repeated his threat to attack iranian cultural sites, if iran does retaliate, and in the past hour he took to twitter say. Iran will never have a nuclear weapon. In capitals. Earlier today, borisjohnson has spoken to his iraqi counterpart with the two leaders agreeing to Work Together to find a diplomatic way forward in the region. James landale reports. Chanting. If you want an idea of how Qasem Soleimani was seen in iran, just look at this. Hundreds of thousands thronging the streets of tehran today, to mourn his death. The iranian general may have been seen as a brutal military commander in the west, but here, soleimani was seen as a national hero. And now, a martyr, after his
assassination by the us. The general was often described as the second most important man in iran. This morning, the most powerful, the Supreme LeaderAyatollah Khamenei, said prayers over his coffin and wept at the loss of the man who controlled irans network of allies and proxy forces across the middle east. The crowds called for vengeance, and the man who has replaced soleimani as head of the elite revolutionary guards quds force, esmail ghaani, promised iran would remove us forces from the region. God has promised to avenge soleimanis assassination, he said, there would definitely be some actions. In an address broadcast on satellite television, soleimanis daughter warned President Trump that her fathers death would have consequences. America and zionism, she said, should know that my fathers martyrdom has led to a greater awakening of the peoples consciousness in the resistance front and will bring about dark days for them. But us and allied forces in the region have been put on standby for military retaliation that could potentially include attacks on tankers in the gulf, amid growing fears of violent miscalculation. Professor Mohammed Marandi is a political analyst from the university of tehran. He was part of the iranian delegation in vienna during the Iran Nuclear Deal negotiations. Hejoins me from via webcam. Looking at these remarkable images
from tehran and other iranians cities, and even the sight of the supreme cities, and even the sight of the Supreme Leader in tears, that something the americans in particular do you think will have been surprised by, in terms of a reaction . The United States has a lwa ys reaction . The United States has always been very ignorant about the reality on the ground, that is why they have been for the last four decades, trying to depict iran as a regime, implying it is illegitimate, it is corrupt, it is unpopular, despised, heated. Every negative quality one can attribute is usually attributed to iran. But they cannot explain why then we had over 5 Million Peoplejust in explain why then we had over 5 Million People just in tehran today, mourning general soleimani. And i think this isjust mourning general soleimani. And i think this is just one of the two miscalculations will stop the second is what the americans did in iraq. The americans also committed an act of war in iraq, against iraqis,
because they murdered the deputy head of the Popular Mobilisation forces in iraq, who is a high ranking iraqi official, and we learned yesterday from the iraqi Prime Minister that trump was lying about general soleimanis intentions in iraq, the Prime Minister said in parliament he was invited he came to iraq to meet him, and he was going to discuss the letter that the saudis gave to the iraqi Prime Minister to find ways for mediation, and the iraqi Prime Minister said trump knew about this and even thanked the iraqi Prime Minister. So the degree of deception that comes from the white house is quite extraordinary. If there is a misconception of the reaction of the iranian regime, what about the iranian regime, what about the iranian people . What has this done, away from the government, away from the offices, on the streets, how do you think people are reacting to this . Well, again, ithink
you think people are reacting to this . Well, again, i think this term regime is part of the problem. The republic of iran is a country that is highly stable, it has a high degree of legitimacy, i cant think of any country where people would come in these numbers on the streets to mourn a seniorfigure in the political and military establishment. 0bviously people are outraged, and they expect the government to respond. And i think the people in the west to think that iran does not have the capability, they are badly mistaken. Countries like the united arab emirates, saudi arabia, which facilitate the americans, and they have American Military bases there, if there is conflict, they will be seen as siding with the enemy, and these are very wea k siding with the enemy, and these are very weak countries, all of their key infrastructure is right alongside the iranian border. If there is any conflict, that would be a strap cache catastrophic for the global economy, it would bring down the global economy, so the united
states has to be very careful, they should not underestimate iran, and iran will respond, because iran knows that if they are please trump, trump will only murder more and more people, and general soleimani, the irony of course is that trump a few yea rs irony of course is that trump a few years ago, he said that 0bama created isis, and after that he said that the iranians were fighting isis. And that is a good thing. Now he has completely moved that position, as it quite often does, and says general soleimani has killed so Many American soldiers. But the reality is the reason why american soldiers have died in iraqis because of an illegal occupation where the American Government applied its way into the country. I dont know if you have seen country. I dont know if you have seen the tweet from the american president in the last 20 minutes or
so . You were part of the iranian delegation in vienna. What do you make of how the us allies are responding to this, particularly the united kingdom, but france and the eu generally, those involved in those negotiations, are they com pletely those negotiations, are they completely dead . Those negotiations, are they completely dead . Well, the iranians have looked at what happened, they aided the United States in destroying libya, they worked alongside the americans and the saudis in destroying yemen, and helping the saudis impose a starvation siege. We saw how the europeans and the americans facilitated the influx of tens of thousands of foreign fighters in syria, extremist, pretending they are freedom fighters, and when the iranians see these sorts of things and see that the europeans who have signed the nuclear deal are
basically obeying trump, and are in com plete basically obeying trump, and are in complete violation of the deal, the conclusion that we get in iran that the europeans are, with all due respect, they are just as immoral as the United States and just as unreliable, and therefore many people are saying here why should we even talk with europeans . The europeans will just even talk with europeans . The europeans willjust do what trump says, and so far that is what we have been seeing. So even now, the United States has carried out an act of war. Trump has said he will potentially target iranian cultural sites. That is a war crime, but no european leader will say anything. A few months ago, trump said he may obliterate iran. No european leader said anything. So when you have this sort of reaction coming from europe, then iranians conclude that the europeans are just as much a part of the problem as trump. Whether that is completely true or not is one
issue, but Public Perception is important. Very briefly, lots of concern about the so called unintended consequences of what the United States has done. As one of those a full blown war . United states has done. As one of those a fullblown war . Well, one of the unintended consequences already is that they have outraged the iraqi people for the act of war they have committed against their own people, the fact that they ignore iraqi sovereignty, the fact they ignore the iraqi Prime Minister. The iraqi Prime Minister told the americans not to bomb the iraqi soldiers, he did. He asked for their intelligence, where they claim that these groups were behind the death of the american contractor, they refused to give him that information. The americans act with impunity and now the iraqis are outraged and the Iraqi Parliament has voted to have the americans leave, and in iran, the americans have united the country and outraged the whole country against the United States, so i think that, although i
dont think trump is wise enough to understand, but it is quite obvious that the americans have made a huge mistake, and they will pay the price. Professor, really good to talk to you, thank you for your time. Youre watching afternoon live, these are our headlines the most prolific rapist in british history is jailed for a minimum of 30 years. What advice do you give to those who may even suspect they were . So, in terms of the advice that we give, definitely, if somebody is concerned about this having possibly happen to them, that is not something you can just take and live with. You do need to come forward and look for some support. I would make a distinction between
telling the police and getting support, so you can initially come forward and get support. Arrangements are in place through Greater Manchester police, through organisations like ourselves and other charities who are specialists in Sexual Violence, people can contact us 24 hours a day, come and get that support. It is then your choice about whether or not you choose to report. We all know that rape is a hugely underreported crime, and it is something that fundamentally shapes your world, so if people are thinking this could have happened to them, or if indeed any other rate may have happened to them under similar circumstances, support is there, you are not alone. Another particular difficulty of this was the use of a drug that meant many men who were victims didnt know they had been victims. It was only when police examined this mans phone that they were able to find out what had been going on. How does anybody approach a case like that where you are telling someone like that where you are telling someone something is able to them
and they didnt even know themselves . It is just and they didnt even know themselves . It isjust absolutely horrendous, they have to say, i have been impressed throughout by the authorities in Greater Manchester, who have really tried to make sure there is a real strategy, there are loads of organisations ready to provide support, notjust of the victims but also to people like the witnesses, the jurors in victims but also to people like the witnesses, thejurors in court victims but also to people like the witnesses, the jurors in court as well. In terms of how that needs to be approached, it absolutely needs to be done in a way that is centred in what the experience will be for the victim, and being there for them and making sure they know they are not alone, and that they can talk to other people. It is a really tough thing to recover from, other people. It is a really tough thing to recoverfrom, it other people. It is a really tough thing to recover from, it absolutely shakes your world, but if there is the message, the message is that it is possible to recover. He has not won. People are amazing and they have the capacity to recover. And organisations like us are there to help them recover. On the basis of what you have just said, there help them recover. On the basis of what you havejust said, there may be those who say maybe something happened but im not sure i really wa nt to happened but im not sure i really want to know, i had perhaps better remain not knowing.
want to know, i had perhaps better remain not knowing. I can absolutely understand that. You can say that to yourself. What you also need to recognise, though, is what is the psychological impact on you if you think this might have happened to you. Something like this shapes your basic level of trust in the world, as many crimes do, but particularly when Something Like this happens, it isa when Something Like this happens, it is a really hard thing to live with, thatis is a really hard thing to live with, that is the pillars we all build our lives on, so i would say if it is sitting on your mind, as it probably will do, then really do come forward and get some support. Ellen, really good to talk to you. Thank you for your time this afternoon. The disgraced hollywood producer, Harvey Weinstein, is in court this afternoon charged with rape and sexual assualt. Jurors are being selected for his trial more than two years after the allegations against him first emerged. Some 80 women have accused mr weinstein of Sexual Misconduct, but this trial relates to just two of them. He denies all claims of non consensual sex. Well, lets speak to nada tawfik, whos outside the court in new york. How long doesjury how long does jury selection take before the trial gets under way . Today they will be dealing with some pre trial matters and once it gets under way, it will take possibly two weeks. Remember, they are having to screen the through thousands of jurors who have been called here to select just 12, and six jurors who have been called here to selectjust12, and six alternates. It isa selectjust12, and six alternates. It is a key part, because most will wa nt to it is a key part, because most will want to make sure they are choosing people who will look at this case impartially, you will basically be able to put any preconceptions aside and hear this case. This case involves two women who have accused Harvey Weinstein, one has accused her of raping him in 2013 at a hotel room, another has accused him of a
four sport sexual act in 2006 at her apartment. And so certainly these arejust a fraction apartment. And so certainly these are just a fraction of the accusations against Harvey Weinstein that came to light more than two yea rs that came to light more than two years ago, more than 80 women who have accused him. The of course denies the formal charges in court and all allegations of nonconsensual sex, but he faces life in prison if he is convicted. Today, we have seen a number of women, including celebrities Rosanna Arquette and rose mcgowan come here to the court to make a statement. They said they wa nted to make a statement. They said they wanted their voices to be heard, they wanted to stand in solidarity with the two women in this case and they wanted to make sure that the focus was on Harvey Weinstein, who they described as the predator. They said this is not about retribution but about cultural change. They really wa nt but about cultural change. They really want to see this case continue to affect the me too movement, the Global Movement that was sparked by the downfall of Harvey Weinstein, and they are
saying they see this really already asa saying they see this really already as a victory, even though they dont wa nt to as a victory, even though they dont want to think yet of the outcome, but certainly this will have a profound effect on the me too movement. Thank you, nada. Lets catch up with the weather, tomasz schafernaker. We are looking at what has happened in australia, we have reported they have had some respite come a bit of cooler weather, some rain. An amazing range in temperatures at the moment. Thats right. The heatwave has come to an end but the drop in the temperatures has been pretty incredible and we will talk about why that might be happening. I will give you an example of canberra, which actually reached its highest temperature ever on record. Back in the 60s, they managed to get 42 degrees. In the last few days, the highest temperature they managed to record was 44 celsius, so they absolutely smashed it, that is very significant, because we breach records by point something of a degree. This is certainly very significant. Then what is even more
staggering is that 24 hours later, the High Temperature of the following day was only 22 degrees. This is going to sound really weird, but that probably felt freezing cold because of that different, absolutely incredible. You compare that to other cities as well, that wasnt the only other one. That is an airport, it experienced a temperature drop around the fourth, between the third and the fifth of around 30 celsius. We often dont get that over a period of a few months in this country, they have that in the space of a couple of days. Sydney, not quite as dramatic a drop but around 20 celsius. So huge swings is what we are experiencing, and i think that is the message here, these swings in the message here, these swings in the temperatures. But the wind is obviously crucial in all of this. This is the next thing to talk about, the winds, the flames, it pushes the fires along. We have had
the wind is blowing out from the southern climes, the southern oceans, pushing the heatwave to the north. What is going to happen over the next two or three days is a cyclone that is just off the coast of australia here will be traversing the interior of the continent, and there is actually going to be scooping up some of that heat from the north and pushing it back down south again. So these temperatures across this part of australia once again will rise probably into the 40s again. And this whole pattern is also linked to the more general pattern of the jet stream. We often talk about the jet stream across the atla ntic talk about the jet stream across the atlantic but of course there is one across the southern climes as well. If you look at these ripples, these undulations, i like to call this the rain and wind superhighway if you like. Whenever we get these bumps and ripples we get this huge temperature swing, that is what is happening in australia in the south. Big train share, particularly in the
north. Big change. Big train share, particularly in the north. Big change. The wind will be the story in the next couple of days but also the temperatures in the north of the country, thanks to something called the phone effect. It isa something called the phone effect. It is a Meteorological Phenomenon where you have winds blowing over the mountains and all sorts of weird and wonderful things happen, the temperatures tend to rise the other side of the mountain is the air goes over. Far too complex to explain in a Weather Forecast but suffice to say we could be seeing some pretty impressive temperatures for the time of the year, not in the short term, this is round about now, 5pm. We are talking about seven, eight, nine, once the cold front moves through the course of this evening, we get a temporary lull, the temperatures drop away, this time of year where the sky is clear, the temperature still drop away like a stone so maybe a touch of frost and his windless southern areas, then later in the night, the winds pick up again as the next storm passes to the south of iceland with its next weather front. This is the south of iceland with its next weatherfront. This is the next weatherfront. This is the next weather system heading its way. A
lot of isobars here, basically where the winds are strong, weathertight Pressure Gradient is pushing the warmth across us. I mentioned those temperatures earlier on. This sort of situation where you get a sort of very mild, strong, south westerly wind, it tends to be the other side of the mountains, to the lea of high ground is the phrase we use, where you get some sunshine, temperatures could get up to 16, maybe even 17 celsius. I think the record, though i need to check, i think the record forjanuary is i need to check, i think the record for january is around i need to check, i think the record forjanuary is around 18 or 19 degrees, we are not quite going to get that. But certainlyjust look how widespread these temperatures are. We should not be getting these values this time of year but we are, 13, 14 degrees. A cold front moves through into wednesday, followed by colder air from through into wednesday, followed by colder airfrom the north through into wednesday, followed by colder air from the north atlantic. This is snow here, way to the north of my head but that would just be clipping parts of scotland, may be some flurries there across the highlands during the course of wednesday, but certainly a
significant dip across this part of the world. You can see bees lime green colours, so sevens the world. You can see bees lime green colours, so sevens there for glasgow and aberdeen but Still Holding onto that extraordinarily mild 14 degrees in london. Then as we head to the end of the week, the forecast is a little sketchy, properly stay unsettled. Those temperatures dropping back down to what is at least closer to the seasonal norm. That is it, you are up to date. This is bbc news, our latest headlines. Jailed for a minimum of 30 years. The trial of the disgraced producer gets under way in new york as jurors are selected. Sport now on afternoon live with hugh ferris. South africa are chasing a test record 438 to beat england what chance do they have . South africa need 438 world record is 418 they world record is 418 need name or wickets that the face they need name or wickets that they face because south africa have started the chase rather well. The reason they need so many is because englands second innings was impressive. Earlier dom sibley became the first england opener to score a test century in cape town since 1910. Ben stokes played a significant role as well 72 off 47. They declared their second innings on 391 for 8 leaving south africa that chasel. 1221. Pieter malan with a 50. His maiden half century for south africa. Meanwhile australian great shane warne is auctioning off his baggy green cap to raise money for those affected by the bushfires in his country. The caps are stuff of Australian Sporting legend and as its something warne wore throughout his career its expected to fetch an awful lot of money. The current highest bid is more than £166,000. 0n the subject of those fires in australia, less than a fortnight before the start of the Australian Open tennis, melbourne lies under a blanket of bushfire haze. Today the tournament organiser craig tiley has said theyll be closely monitoring air quality while hoping that the tournament will go ahead. And var in the headlines again whats happened this weekend . Pitchside monitors have been lonely things. Premier League Referees told not to use them. He make decisions themselves, or use the va are in their year. Yesterday in the fa cup michael 0liver used the screen to send off Crystal Palaces luka milivjevic in their fa cup defeat to derby. Alan shearer says the premier league needs to take note. The last fa cup third round match kicks offjust before 8pm. You can watch the fourth round draw from 7 30. You can also listen on bbc radio 5 live. It looks like rhys webbs made his final appearance for the french side toulon. The clubs owner says webb has shown a dishonest attitude over his move back to wales. The scrum half will rejoin 0spreys next season after being released early from his toulon contract forfamily reasons. Johanna kontas out of the brisbane internataional tennis as she prepares for the Australian Open later this month. She lost in the first round in straight sets to Barbora Strycova a player who kontas failed to beat in their three previos meetings including in the quarter finals of wimbledon last year. Konta has been struggling with a knee injury, which shell want to improve before melbourne. Thats all the sport for now. Ill have more for
you in the next hour. The labour partys ruling body has agreed the rules for the upcoming leadership contest. Nominations will close on january 13th. People can pay £25 to become a registered supporter, allowing them to vote in the leadership election, but arent classed as members of the party. And the ballot will run from february 21st until april the 2nd, with the winner announced on april 4th. Five mps emily thornberry, Jess Phillips, sir keir starmer, clive lewis and lisa nandy have so far entered the running. Shadow business secretary rebecca long bailey is also expected to announce her bid. Lets get the thoughts of sienna rodgers whos from the website labour list which is supportive of, but independent from, the labour party. Romney threw the timetable, is there
any surprise with this . romney threw the timetable, is there any surprise with this . I dont think so. They were constrained by the rule book. The funny thing about the rule book. The funny thing about the labour party is that rules which advantage one faction might benefit anotherfaction. Advantage one faction might benefit another faction. Last time they were quite angry there was a registered supporters beset a £25 which seemed quite high and only a 48 hour window. They have chosen to do exactly the same thing but this time it will not disadvantageJeremy Corbyns supporters in the weight might have last time. This time it is jess might have last time. This time it isJess Phillips might have last time. This time it is Jess Phillips and might have last time. This time it isJess Phillips and keir starmer who are getting people signed up to vote for them so that is an interesting dynamic. It could prove to be crucial couldnt it . Definitely. First of all, we have got a week of mps and meps nominating. That is going to be a really crucial stage that we could see some people possibly emily thornberry, clive lewis might struggle a bit, lisa nandy also bet more challenged and the two frontrunners. Who might actually get knocked out. You dont put lisa
nandy up front as others are . 0bviously nandy up front as others are . Obviously there is a long way to go, it is not even formally kicked off yet. But lisa nandy might i think our team is quite confident she has mp nominations, but then there is a next stage after that and they have to either get 5 of local parties to nominate them, or 5 of affiliated members. This is all quite complicated and it is all you to the labour party actually, the first time they will be running a leadership contest under these rules. But these are hurdles that are quite difficult for people to meet. Anyone who is not rebecca long bailey or keir starmer will struggle and work very hard to meet all of these. She has not thrown her hat into the ring yet but she is seen widely as the natural successor to Jeremy Corbyn, the continuation. They are treating that is a blessing, many will see it as a curse . The truth is that the lib Party Membership are supportive Jeremy Corbyn. Im sure if either Jeremy Corbyn. Im sure if either Jeremy Corbyn. Im sure if either Jeremy Corbyn or evenjohn mcdonnell we re Jeremy Corbyn or evenjohn mcdonnell were standing in this leadership
election they would be re elected. But that the same time, they are not deeply factional in the way they are sometimes portrayed. Labour party members, there are 500,000 of them, they are often very ordinary people and makeover keir starmer equally. That is what he has been polling very well. I think it is where they stand in the party, these candidates, that will become more evident over the next three months. It isa evident over the next three months. It is a very long contest. The role of the unions . Yes, trade unions are very important in terms of the second nomination stage. After mps and meps have had their say, mps can either go for local parties that will have to work on the grassroots, or they can get the support of trade unions but they will need two trade unions but they will need two trade unions to pass that stage and actually quite a lot of them might get behind one candidate, particularly long bailey so that might bea particularly long bailey so that might be a difficult route for them. Were also looking at the deputy leader been chosen as well . Absolutely. We had quite a few
announced. Ian murray, labours only scottish mp is expected to announce today or tomorrow. Very good to talk today or tomorrow. Very good to talk to you, thank you. Lets go back to one of our top stories today. Huge crowds have gathered in iran for the funeral of general Qasem Soleimani, after he was killed in a us drone strike. This is the scene tonight in qom, where a further ceremony is being held ahead of the burial in the generals hometown of kerman tomorrow. Earlier, irans Supreme LeaderAyatollah Khamenei led prayers for Qasem Soleimani as his coffin was brought through tehran. 0ur middle east editorjeremy bowen is in baghdad at an official mourning event orgnaised by the Popular Mobilisation forces, and sent us this. You can get an idea of the shock and the anger among irans allies here in iraq. At this place, which is the official mourning, the official commemoration for. There, over there on the poster, Qasem Soleimani and abu mahdi al muhandis, who is the leader
of one of the main armed groups here, you can see over there a line of yellow flags. Those are fighters from muhandiss group. There is a lot of anger in there. It is quite. Finely developed calm anger. People are not yelling. But they want to get even. And the two countries they talk about most are the United States, donald trump, and israel. The question is what happens next . What do the iraqis here in baghdad and also their allies in iran, what do they do with this shock, with this anger . I dont think its going to dissipate easily. You can sense it in the air. You can sense it from talking to people. There will be consequences. Consequences that cant be predicted at the moment. But consequences that, quite likely, will make this already very difficult situation
even more complicated. Here, borisjohnson has spoken to his iraqi counterpart, with the two leaders agreeing to Work Together to find a diplomatic way forward in the region. 0ur Political Correspondent nick eardleyjoins me now from westminster. What else was said about this call . Not a great deal, actually, simon. The call took place this morning, borisjohnson is at the moment meeting with senior ministers and officials in downing street to discuss the uks approach to the crisis. In iran. Broadly, it involves trying to persuade all those involved to de escalate some of the rhetoric we have seen in the last few days. The Prime Minister issued that that joint Statement Last night with the french president and the german chancellor saying exactly that. Need to dial down some of that rhetoric. It has got to be said, certainly if Donald Trumps twitter feed is anything to go by,
that rhetoric is not being dialled down at all. Borisjohnson has something of a balancing act to achieve over the next few days. He wa nts to achieve over the next few days. He wants to try and persuade the americans not to take any unnecessary or rash actions, but at the same time, not to be seen to criticise donald trump, who we know he thinks of as a key ally. A couple of other things borisjohnson has been saying through number ten spokespeople today, the first is that cautioning america against that idea of potentially hitting important cultural sites in iran. Something donald trump hinted at in a tweet overnight. Downing street com pletely a tweet overnight. Downing street completely clear this morning that there are strict International Rules to stop that happening. I think that is pretty clear warning to the white house and that is not something the uk would support. The other thing is that the Prime Minister is trying to persuade the iraqis against the idea of getting rid of uk and us troops
who were in iraq at the moment. Number ten say they do a vitaljob in the anti isis campaign in iraq and the wider area. But as i say, there is a difficult balancing act for the Prime Minister and it is his first Big International test since winning the election last month. To try in situ donald trump on the one hand, lets ds these tensions but at the same time trying to keep the Iran Nuclear Deal alive and trying to persuade iraq that needs to allow uk troops to stay. Nick, thank you very much. In a moment the latest business news. First a look at the headlines on afternoon live. The most prolific rapist in british history is jailed for a minimum of 30 years. Bosses at the countrys Top Companies will earn more in three days than the average person does in a year. Thats according to a report by Hr Professionals and the high pay centre. New car registrations fell to their lowest level since 2013, last year, according to the trade body the smmt. Its the third consecutive annual fall. Its being blamed on Weak Consumer Confidence and confusion over clean air laws. The uk Services Sector stabilised in december according
to a survey by ihs markit. This is important because services make up three quarters of the entire economy. Last month showed the sharpest rise in new orders sincejuly and points to a possible recovery in the sector. The Festive Season has come to an end and for some people it actually ends with thoughts of divorce. Yes, not very happy thoughts indeed. Todayis yes, not very happy thoughts indeed. Today is known in the Legal Profession in some parts, as divorce because that is when we traditionally see an upturn in enquiries about divorce to law firms. In january of enquiries about divorce to law firms. Injanuary of last enquiries about divorce to law firms. In january of last year, those enquiries increased by 84 and a similarleap is those enquiries increased by 84 and a similar leap is expected this year. Money is one of the big factors in this that leads to as we say, an unhappy divorce. Lawyers
will do all right though. They will be wringing their hands with glee am sure. But. Lets talk to harry benson is Research Talk to director for the marriage harry benson. White as money such an issue in this . The biggest thing is that money is notjust this . The biggest thing is that money is not just stuff, this . The biggest thing is that money is notjust stuff, it represents so many things. 0ur aspirations, hopes dreams, fears, it represents power and control as well so represents power and control as well so you represents power and control as well so you can represents power and control as well so you can imagine that when two people get together and have to manage their own stuff together, there is also supported difficulties. So it is not surprising that, although money is not the number one issue that people tend to argue about, it is definitely the thing that produces the greatest intensity of discussion and conflict. Is this something that comes to a head at christmas . Because money is obviously central to the way we live christmas these days. Do we see a spike there in concerns about, conflicts and money over christmas . The biggest thing about christmas for most people is spending too much money, eating too much, drinking too much, so there is generally a great deal of potential for relationships to go horribly wrong over the christmas period. If you havent planned ahead, if you havent thought about things in advance, then yes, you can definitely have an awful lot of problems, it is pretty much self evident. Problems, it is pretty much selfevident. When you say to speak about things in advance, are there actually ways of really dampening down the heat of arguments about money . Yes. So much about talking about money is pretty much how you handle relationships generally. The biggest secrets to successful relationships are, in my opinion, two things. One is commitment. Being committed in the first place, making sure you are on the same page, you
have a plan for the future. Are we going to spend the rest of our lives together . It is part of the reasons married couples tend to do much better than unmarried couples, and also how we treat each other is incredibly important. If we treat each other with kindness, as friends, i wish i had each other with kindness, as friends, iwish i had known each other with kindness, as friends, i wish i had known more about countless years ago. I have been married 33 years, and i am still married, very much by the skin of my teeth. We went through a really difficult time. Actually, to be honest, the biggest reason people split up is growing apart and money certainly plays a part in that. But you can make things work, there are all sorts of ways of getting things back together again. Words of wisdom there, thank you so much harry benson. Great pleasure. The price of crude has gone up 5 since friday. 0bviously that is being impacted by
fears of tensions in the middle east, following the assassination of the iranians leader. 0il east, following the assassination of the iranians leader. Oil companies doing well out of it, so bp up substantial amount will if you run an airline you dont want to see crude oil bubbling up, that is why we have seen easyjets share price on the slide, because of the possibility of higher expenses. Thank you very much. As weve been hearing, officials in australia have warned the devastating bushfires could continue for months, with concerns that the huge fires in victoria and New South Wales could meet to create a larger mega blaze. 0ur correspondent Lucy Hockings has spent the day in the fire ravaged town of nowra in the eastern state of New South Wales. I am standing in the nowra fire safety command centre, and they are getting ready for the night shift here. It is quite quiet, as you can see but on some of the hotter, busier days when the crisis really had a grip here, the room was full of people monitoring what was happening. With me is ian smith, ian it has been cooler today and there has been a bit of rain. As it helped or hindered you . It has had a dual effect. The rain has been good because it has quietened the fire down but it has had the opposite impact, in that we were not able to do a lot of our back burning operations that we were planning to do before the next onset of bad weather and in about five days. What is back burning . Back burning is where we fall back to control lines and use fire to work back towards main fire, so burning out all the vegetation between our control line and the main fire. So it is Fire Fighting fire . Fire fighting fire, yes, indeed. What are we expecting over the next few days, because were hearing that the temperatures are set to rise again . The next two or three days are very much like we have had. It will be a bit cooler, bit more moisture, no rain but moist so we will continue with trying to do that back burning. Then we are getting to another cycle of warm, windy weather towards the weekend. And we will go through those cycles about every seven days. And how philosophical are you when you hear about it coming . How exhausted do you feel even ahead of it . No, we plan for this. We work well together in this control centre. We are used to what the fire is doing, so we just are working through our training, through ourjob and looking forward to having the upper hand at some stage. When do you think that will be, because this could go on for months . Well, certain;y that it is in that cycle of very, very dry weather. Unprecedented runs of fire last saturday and on New Years Eve when we had 12 kilometre runs in about five or six hours, in southerly wind direction, when it changed and that is not common. But that is what were dealing with at the moment. Ian, thank you. Still a number of fires burning across New South Wales, despite the cooler conditions and lots of people looking at what is happening in the neighbouring state of victoria, as well, where there are two huge fires fires and the real fear there is that those two fires will merge to form a mega blaze and that would be very for people to battle in victoria. So, still very much a state of alert here in austria. So, still very much a state of alert here in australia. Now its time for a look at the weather with tomasz. No real change over the next few days, rain, wind and tomorrow will be an exceptionally mild today for many of us. The winds will also be a story thanks to this storm just south of iceland. This is the storms weather front, crossing the uk in the last few hours, bringing some rain, the rain is quite heavy but does move fairly swiftly, it is being pushed,
so fairly swiftly, it is being pushed, so gales still across many western and Northern Areas through the course of this evening. The rain should clear away, the southeast this evening. Then the wind will temporarily ease, almost completely, and a touch of frost in some areas as well. No wind at all across this portion of the country but later in the night, the wind will pick up in the night, the wind will pick up in the north west, a step start to rise. This is the next low pressure, next storm taking a very similar track, and weather front moving through and this one is actually drawing up some really mild air, really mild they are from the south, southern climes and that does mean that some of these North Western and Western Areas have some particularly High Temperature forjanuary. The gales and the rain the story across the north west of the uk during the course of tuesday. The wind could prove disruptive across parts of scotland, england and, in some areas, the wind could be in excess
of 70 miles per but mostly 50, 60 miles per, not as windy in the south east. Temperatures around 12 or 13 with a bit of brightness. In some spots in the far, far north east of the country are to get up north east of the country are to get up to around about 16 degrees. Here is wednesdays Weather Forecast. The low pressure moves out into scandinavia, that stormy area of weather. Behind it, it turns a bit colder, these are colder winds blowing off the north atlantic. Sliding in across the northern half of the uk, talking about single figures, whereas in the south we are hanging onto some of that mild barrier, could be as high as 14 degrees in london. It does look as temperatures will ease back down closer to what they should be this time of year. Goodbye. Hello, youre watching afternoon live im simon mccoy. Today at 4pm. This is Reynhard Sinaga, as he wanted the world to see him. His social media account is full of grinning photos of a student having fun. But sinaga has many faces, and behind the mask lies the truth. A depraved monster, said by prosecutors to be the worlds worst rapist. The total number of offences that we have prosecuted is almost 160, over 48 victims, as far as the judicial process, probably anywhere in the world
is concerned, hes the most prolific rapist that has come through the courts. He would offer them somewhere to have a drink or phone a taxi and, on one occasion, it took him just 60 seconds to pick up a victim. More than 100 men made this journey, disappearing inside sinagas apartment block. Looking at that amount of evidence is challenging in itself. That is equivalent to 1,500 dvd films. And if you havent got any physical injuries, then you may not even suspect you have been sexually assaulted. Reynhard sinaga prowled the streets for years before he was caught. His victims have said they hope he rots in hell
and never leaves prison. He has never explained his crimes. The rapist considered a mystery, as well as a monster. Earlier, judith gave more information on what the judge said in court in manchester. Well, thejudge, Suzanne Goddard qc, described Reynhard Sinaga as a monster, and looking at him, as he stood in the dock, she said he seemed to be enjoying the trial process, even as he was standing to be sentenced, and actually i found sitting in court, looking at him, its very hard to get your head around the scale of offending, looking at that slight, very slim, young looking, younger than his age looking man, and to take in the fact that the authorities are saying he is the most prolific rapist in britain. Suzanne goddard said you are an evil sexual predator, she said, you are a deeply disturbed and perverted individual with no sense of reality. We have only been able to bring
you the detail of this case today because so enormous is the scale of his offending there has been four separate trials and it is only today we can report this at the end of the fourth trial. This prosecution has looked at the case of 48 of sinagas victims, but that is by no means the total. We heard from the judge today that the Police Believe they could be as many as 195 people, they have film footage of 195 men who have been attacked by sinaga. Beyond that, they say, it may never be possible to know the total number, and the other thing we have just found in the last few minutes is that the home secretary has said she first of all extends her condolences to the victims of sinaga, but has also now been looking particularly katie russel is from rape crisis an organisation that supports victims and raises awareness and understanding of Sexual Violence and abuse. Katiejoins me now from leeds. 0ne one of the more troubling aspects of this case is that many of the men may not know will be fully aware they were assaulted. Any Sexual Violence or abuse is a trauma to experience but certainly when victims and survivors find out about Sexual Violence or abuse that has been perpetrated against them as they have been asleep or unconscious that they werent previously aware of, it can obviously add another layer of trauma and distress. And how do you deal with that . Well, as you heard, there are specialist independent and Confidential Support Services like red crisis centres and other organisations across the country who offer specialised therapy and listening to support victims and survivors to move forward positively with their lives and to heal after what is an almost incredible trauma. We are talking about men in this case, in terms of victims, and is there still this
perception that men sometimes still find it harder to talk about, too, if they are not sure it has happened, they might just if they are not sure it has happened, they mightjust want to blank it out, if you like . In our experience, all victims and survivors, regardless of their gender, age, background can find what has happened to them extremely difficult the process, and can experience a huge range of different impacts on their health, their lives, their relationships, that can be wide ranging and even lifelong, thatis be wide ranging and even lifelong, that is why access to specialist, confidential and independent services that will notjudge, will listen and believe and will not put any pressure on the victim or survivor to make any choices they are not comfortable with, to report to police, if that is not what they wa nted to police, if that is not what they wanted to do, and so on, that is why their services are so essential. You mention the police, and of course they have a difficultjob of going through this mans phone. They find a video of attacks he has carried out as they are having to approach someone out as they are having to approach someone who may not know anything about this. Yes, certainly going
through that material must be extremely traumatic for the officers involved. Likewise for victims and survivors, knowing that other people have viewed the sexual preparation against them, can add another layer of distress. Organisations to offer support and listening to those who are supporting or caring for victims and survivors, as well as Specialist Training and workshops and awareness raising through other professionals, including those in the criminal justice system. Of the particular difficulty of dealing with people who dont remember exactly what was done to them, does that make resolution even harder, in some ways . Resolution even harder, in some ways . Every victim and survivor is different. It absolutely is possible to heal and move forward positively
after such a traumatic experience, and rape crisis supporters and those in other specialist support organisations are well trained, and do understand the specific distress and trauma of these kinds of experiences. So there absolutely is hope and for anyone who has been through anything like this, or for whom these news reports are triggering memories of past or recent Sexual Violence or abuse, we would absolutely encourage them to visit our website, rape crisis dot org dot uk for details of specialist support services. Thank you for your time. Greater Manchester Police are asking people who think they might be a victim to contact them on 0800 092 0410. Details of organisations offering information and support with Sexual Violence are available at bbc. Co. Uk actionline, or you can call free at any time to hear recorded information on 0800 077 077. Vast crowds have gathered in tehran for the funeral of Qasem Soleimani, the iranian general killed by us forces during an airstrike in iraq on friday. His successor has promised vengance for the killing. President trump has repeated his threat to attack iranian cultural sites, if iran does retaliate and in the past hour he took to twitter say. Iran will never earlier today, Boris Johnson has spoken to his iraqi counterpart with the two leaders agreeing to Work Together to find a diplomatic way forward in the region. And now, a martyr, after his assassination by the us. Overnight, President Trump return to washington from florida, promising a major retaliation if iran attacked us forces in response to the killing of soleimani. And again, he threatened to strike iranian cultural sites, something that critics insist would be against international law. So far, irans most significant action has to been to weaken even further its deal to restrict its nuclear capability, saying it will no longer accept any limit on its ability to enrich uranium. But us and allied forces in the region have been put on standby for military retaliation that could potentially include attacks on tankers in the gulf, amid growing fears of violent miscalculation. Both sides are fundamentally underestimating the strength and resolve on the other side. Today, the Prime Minister is meeting senior ministers and advisers in downing street to discuss the uks response. In a joint statement with his french and german counterparts, mrjohnson said there was an urgent need for de escalation and called on all parties to exercise utmost restraint. Lets cross live to washington and speak to Douglas Silliman who was u. S. Ambassador to iraq between 2016 and last year. Lets just talk about iraq, because the Iraqi Parliament looking now at getting American Forces out, how big a development, and how foreseen should that have been as a result of this action on friday . The action of the Parliament Yesterday is not as definitive as many people are describing it, and it was also very divisive in iraqi politics. They have asked the Prime Minister to revisit and get rid of the individual agreements most of which we re individual agreements most of which were written in wendy 14 with
coalition partners who went into iraq to help fight isis and to train the Iraqi Military. What is interesting about the vote is that almost all the sunni voters boycotted, and based with some conversations i have had, with people in iraq, there was significant pressure is on those members of parliament to vote of getting rid of American Forces. What i think needs to happen next in iraqi, andi i think needs to happen next in iraqi, and i want to make sure the International Focus on a conflict between the United States and iran doesnt leave iraq in the dust and not get considered, there are Significant InternationalStrategic Interests in iraq and in the region and in iran, and i think there needs to bea and in iran, and i think there needs to be a conversation among international leaders, including Prime Ministerjohnson with President Trump, other european allies, our nato allies and asian
allies, our nato allies and asian allies about steps the International Community collectively can do to first of all help convince iran that escalation right now would be very bad for iran and that strategic patients would be far better, and for the United States to try to reduce the level of rhetoric. I think back to statements that both the secretary of state pompeo and President Trump made a couple of days ago that were much more positive, where trump said we do not seek bridging change in iran, we are not looking for a while. Pompeo said essentially the same thing in a conversation also with the iraqi president , so what i would like to do is, rather than focus on the reasons that both sides can see to increase the conflict, find a consensus on the International Community to help both sides restore a bit of patience, and then begin
separate conversations to de escalate and find a way through this crisis, without more violence. That is all well and i am just seeing nato secretary general and stilton back saying nato is suspending Training Missions in iraq but the allies could turn around and say it is all very well but you didnt even have the courtesy to tell us you were doing this. Again, if we are backward looking at the steps iran or any particular government has taken in the past two yea rs, government has taken in the past two yea rs , we government has taken in the past two yea rs, we can government has taken in the past two years, we can find plenty of reasons to be angry and move forward with violence. But i am talking more about americas allies. But what i am looking at is not necessarily what i am looking at allies look at their own best interests, first of all, iran, economically. For european allies, the partners in the coalition and in nato, we still have with the United States and europe shared goals in iraq and in iran and
in free flow of commerce through the gulf that should take precedence over placing blame on any particular government or President Trump or the irani in the short term. So i would like the iranians. I would like leaders in europe to the extent they can look at the long term Strategic Interests in europe in the region, free flow of trade, lack of conflict, and see what can be done. There will be plenty of this conflict can be de escalated to place blame and decide whether or not europe wants to maintain the same kind of relations with the United States. But i think the conversation now needs to be how do we press forward towards the shared strategic interest in values that we have in nirat in the region and with iran. Very briefly, just looking at what you are saying, do you think, do you believe that President Trump and those around him had really thought this through . I mean, you are talking in terms of dont look
back, but did they look ahead . have to say i dont frankly know. Well, what i should say, what we have seen is the result of a year and a half of escalation from both the United States and from iran. When the United States left the Nuclear Agreement in may 2018 and imposed maximum sanctions, iran spent the better part of the year trying to convince europe to get around those sanctions but didnt succeed, at which point they began to withdraw step by step from the Nuclear Agreement, and then last summer Nuclear Agreement, and then last summer began a series of deniable attacks by their proxies. Some attacks by their proxies. Some attacks on shipping in the gulf, civilian infrastructure in saudi arabia, the shooting down of an american drone, and then in september attacks on the worlds
largest Oil Processing facility in saudi arabia for stock none of that got for the iranians what i think was the intended american reaction, so was the intended american reaction, so what they started near the end of october after waiting a month was a series of increasingly severe rocket strikes against baghdad near the american and british and other embassies and more importantly against a series of Iraqi Military bases where us and british and canadian and italian and spanish soldiers are working to help fight fight soldiers are working to help fight fight isis and train the iraqis. The Trump Administration has been very clear for the Trump Administration has been very clearfor more the Trump Administration has been very clear for more than a year and a half that their red line in iraq was an american casualties. On 27th of december in a rocket barrage of 31 rockets that can only have been designed to cause casualties, the iranians crossed that american red line. And i think maybe because President Trump was very cautious in reacting to all the previous iranian
publications, iranians thought that was a red line they could cross without any repercussions. It turns out that the attacks on an iraqi militias in iraq and syria escalated then the assault on the American Embassy in baghdad escalated, so what i see in the course of the past eight or nine days, we have had the most eight or nine days, we have had the m ost es ky eight or nine days, we have had the most es ky rotary eight or nine days, we have had the most esky rotary events of this entire period, and i think the first responsibility of international actors, and i think the uk has a real sta ke actors, and i think the uk has a real stake in this, is to reduce tensions and find ways to de escalate, starting with iran, who seems to have the ball and its court right now, but including the american administration. Thank you for your time. I mentioned Jens Stoltenberg, versus the nato council having a meeting to discuss events of the last three days. Lets now hearfrom nato secretary general in stoltenberg. Good afternoon, i havejust good afternoon, i have just chaired a meeting of the north atlantic council. We addressed current tensions in the middle east, and implications for natos Training Mission in iraq. Nato and all nato allies take part in the Global Coalition to defeat isis, and natos mission in iraq is an important contribution to the coalitions effort. At the invitation of the iraqi government, we are helping to train forces in iraq and prevent the return of isis. At our meeting today, strong support was expressed for the fight against isis and for the nato mission in iraq. In everything that we do, the safety of our personnel is paramount. As such,
we have for the time being suspended ourtraining on we have for the time being suspended our training on the ground, and we are taking all precautions necessary to protect our people. We are keeping the situation under close review, and we remain in close contact with the iraqi authorities. Nato is prepared to continue our training and Capacity Building when the situation permits. We remain strongly committed to the fight against international terrorism. At our meeting today, the United States also briefed on the situation following recent attacks on Coalition Forces in iraq. And the strike against general soleimani. Fourfor strike against general soleimani. Four for years, strike against general soleimani. Fourfor years, all allies strike against general soleimani. Four for years, all allies have expressed concerns about
destabilising military activities by iran. We agree iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon. We share concern about Irans Nuclear tests, and we are united in condemning around his neck support for a variety of different terrorist groups. We have recently seen an escalation in iran, including the strike on a saudi Energy Facility in the shooting down of an american drone. At our meeting today, allies called for restraint and de escalation. A new conflict would be in no ones interest. So iran must refrain from further violence and provocations. With that, i am ready to take your questions. We will pull away from that news conference, but yet stoltenberg calling for Jens Stoltenberg calling for Jens Stoltenberg calling for Jens Stoltenberg calling for restraint and saying the training in iraq would be called off for the moment until the situation changed. We will return to that a little later on. The labour partys ruling body has agreed the rules for the upcoming leadership contest. Mp and mep nominations will close on january 13th. People can pay £25 to become a registered supporter in a 48 hour window
allowing them to vote in the leadership election but arent classed as members of the party. Jonathan blake, the nec with this ruling, is there a sense this may favour some candidates rather than others . Todays meeting was watched very closely for the decisions made, as to the timetable and exact rules that would be set for this contest for exactly that reason, simon, because there has been talk that changing the timetable or the amount thatis changing the timetable or the amount that is payable for registered supporters, a kind of light temporary membership, if you like, could favour one or other of the candidates involved and we can get some reaction from the labour mp wes streeting, part of the Campaign Team of jess streeting, part of the Campaign Team ofJess Phillips, one of the candidates. A two week window for new members to join and sign candidates. A two week window for new members tojoin and sign up candidates. A two week window for new members to join and sign up and a 48 hour window for registered supporters. What is your reaction to that . People have two weeks to join. If people want to rejoin the labour party, maybe they are former members
who want to come back, or lifelong embers who are heartbroken that, if you want to help us rebuild the labour party is an effective opposition, you have two weeks to join full stop there was no time like the present so sign up now. The registered supporters scheme, the labour party has chosen to charge people £25. That is quite high, it has the same fee as in 2016, it didnt yield many newjoiners, so i think if you want to be part of the labour party, join as a member, help us be part of rebuilding the labour party as an effective opposition at a future government. Do you think Jess Phillips who you are backing an lisa nandy and others are at a disadvantage, now these rules have been set . No, ithink disadvantage, now these rules have been set . No, i think the important thing is we have a fair and level playing field. I think one of the crucial issues actually is about the role of members in deciding who makes it onto the ballot paper. For the first time ever, constituency labour parties, branches, they will decide as well as mps who gets to be
on the ballot paper. I think it is really important all candidates who are nominated by mps, who get enough nominations from us, all of those candidates deserve a chance to have access to memberss data at that point so they can talk to members before they choose who to nominate, thatis before they choose who to nominate, that is notjust about candidates having the right to talk to members. Even more importantly it is about members having the right to hear from all of the candidates mps have decided we will put forward on a long list effectively. Members decide whether to take that list and stick with it or whether to make a shorter list for them to vote on. Stick with it or whether to make a shorter list for them to vote onm isa shorter list for them to vote onm is a big ask to ask people to fork out and paid tojoin is a big ask to ask people to fork out and paid to join the is a big ask to ask people to fork out and paid tojoin the labour party, to choose a new leader. Cant you blame people for thinking, give usa you blame people for thinking, give us a leader who relates to us and youre former heartlands of then we will think about voting for them . There is something about and i think all of us as existing labour party members, whether we are members of parliament or councillors or the grass roots members who slogged their guts out over the last election, all of us have a role to
play in rebuilding the labour party, and that starts with listening and learning from what just happened and that starts with listening and learning from whatjust happened in decemberand learning from whatjust happened in december and picking the candidate that we think well get a hearing with the public, will be able to deliver the support and the confidence of the country and build the big ideas we need to win, because as this election just gone showed, it is no use having lots of big, radical ideas if you drown them ina big, radical ideas if you drown them in a manifesto that people ultimately dont believe in and dont believe we can deliver. So it is about having a credible leader with exciting ideas that can excite the country. One of the reasons i am backing Jess Phillips as i think she will get hearing with the voters the way others cant but she is not the only credible candidate, and i think it is important we have a fair, transparent and open contest and that all of those candidates have a chance to talk to neighbours before they decide at their Constituency Party meeting is who to nominate. The rules of the contest now set in around 12 weeks time at a special
conference on the 4th of april, the winner will be announced. Thank you very much. In the last few minutes, Harvey Weinstein, one of hollywoods most powerful film producers just left the courthouse, facing five charges, including rape and Sexual Assault, relating to two women, could be jailed for life if convicted. He has already pleaded not guilty and what we have seen in the last couple of hours as jury selection began in that trial. In 2017, dozens of Sexual Assault allegations emerged against the movie mogul and he is now standing trial, where he couldnt face life in the last two days he has been giving an interview in which he says he is not guilty and intends to remain working in the film industry. Criminal charges stem back to me 2018. That is the new york

Wet for some of us, but the story for the next couple of days will be the strength of the wind across the north of the country, already very windy in scotland and some western parts of the uk, 40 50 mile per gusts still blowing earlier this evening. Raines clearing away, skies as well, wind falling light with a touch of frost in some areas tonight. Tomorrow we do it all over again, rain returns, the wind will be howling across parts of scotland, Northern Ireland too, the north west, the north east of england in some spots, winds could exceed 70 mph. In the south it is a different story. Breezy, but sunshine around, most of the rain will be in the north and and
exceedingly mild today, in some places temperatures get up to 16 degrees in january. This is bbc news, our latest headlines. Jailed for a minimum of 30 years. The scrum half will rejoin ospreys next season after being released early from his toulon contract forfamily reasons. Thats all the sport for now. Now, on afternoon live, lets go nationwide and see whats happening around the country in our daily visit to the bbc newsrooms around the uk. Look norths peter levy, is in hull for us, hell be talking about a change in the law for Organ Donation. And in salford we have north west tonights rogerjohnson, who is going to be telling us about a very specific type of festive weight gain. Neither of us. Not you, anyway. So peter, what s the change in the law on this emotive issue . This spring, a new law comes in, it will be presumed that he would donate your organs unless you have specifically recorded the decision not to do so. It is quite a change. Im not sure many people will be aware of this change so it is good
to talk about it. One farmer from east yorkshire has a two life saving transplants. She had them 13 years ago at the age of 32, after suffering from acute liver failure. She is living proof that donations can change somebodys life. She is now urging families, difficult as it is to talk of the Organ Donation. Originally, i was quite keen on it staying a gift. Because that, to me, felt really important, that someone had given me it. The fact that people can opt out, it is really important people can opt out of donating if the dont want to, that is fine. But the majority of people, when they have asked people before, would donate, theyjust never got round to signing up. This is seen as life changing, isnt it . It is sometimes called the gift of life and i would say that tamara who we saw there is a mother to healthy four year boy, hard to believe the difference at the
donation generally can make. Many people ask what can be donated. Liver, lungs, kidney, heart, pancreas and also small intestine is. The new opt out system comes into force later this year in england. By the way, in the uk, in 2017, 413 people died before the right donor was found and today, as of now, there are just over 6000 people on the waiting list for a donor. You are right, it is a hard one to talk about but when you hear about a story like tamaras and we see it with her healthy four riyals, it is well worth it indeed. Thank you very much. Then peter you have a specific angle on this. In the meantime, tell me about why festive weight gain is making the news in the north west. Not for the reason most people would be thinking.
they are watching on a widescreen tvb might think i am filling it but you are right, were talking about pets. The university of liverpools small animal teaching hospital, working with pet owners to help their pets lose weight because a bit like humans, pets are becoming increasingly portly, in fact, the vets say they are showing people a picture of a perfectly slim healthy weight cat or dog and people look at it and think they are too thin. When actually, they are not. That is because our perceptions have been recalibrated as to what we think about as normal. This rottweiler has lost a third of her body weight since vets started trying to help get into trim. A cat called pebbles we feature tonight who is also undergone a similar change who is now a lot slimmer and healthier and a lot more nimble than she used to be. Have a listen to what one of the
vets involved had to say. An increased prevalence of obesity in both dogs and cats and we are also seeing the consequences of that. So, dogs and cats with obesity tend to be living shorter life spans overall, they are more likely to develop other significant medical diseases, such as arthritis and diabetes. And they have a poorer quality of life. So it is a big issue and something we really do need to tackle. What competitor owners do to keep pets trim and healthy, roger . Fewer treats is probably the key thing. We all see the little dog by the side of the sofa looking up at you, munching through a box of chocolates but some treat and flick it to them. Just dont do it. You must not do chocolate, roger you know this realised as i said it, there are special dog chocolates, but he might
give them a treat while you are sitting having a munch on the sofa. The key thing is dont do that. Dont overfeed them. Dont give them too much, make sure they get plenty of exercise and as you heard from the vet, the key thing is they tend to get the same kind of ailments that people, human beings who are carrying too much weight also get. It is very much what is good for you is also good for your pet. While youre there, i saw you listening to what peter was saying, were talking about Organ Donation year ago. It is close to your heart because Family Member . Thats right. Peter was talking about the change in the Organ Donation which is coming in in a couple of months time in, wales and scotland already down that track, but in england it will change. The law was a campaign by a daily newspaper which really got the ball rolling. The post about that campaign was my nephew, max, who underwent a heart transplant a
couple of years ago. Ps. He is now 12, he turned 12 last week. He was nine. He had something which helped keep him alive while he waited for a transplant. He was one of the lucky ones. He was the poster boy for the daily mirror campaign. The key thing they are saying is just a talk to yourfamily they are saying is just a talk to your family about your wishes. Let them know what you would want if the worst were to occur. And as peter said, it is the deemed consent bill, so said, it is the deemed consent bill, so you said, it is the deemed consent bill, so you are said, it is the deemed consent bill, so you are deemed to have consented u nless so you are deemed to have consented unless you have opted out. But the familys wishes are still paramount so familys wishes are still paramount so if your family, familys wishes are still paramount so if yourfamily, if familys wishes are still paramount so if your family, if you familys wishes are still paramount so if yourfamily, if you have not said that you dont want to do it or you do, whatever, yourfamily still has final say. But the key thing is the starting point of the conversation as we said last time we talked which it is change. Rather than he has not opted in, therefore he might not have wanted it, in this case she has not opted out, in which
may not have mind. It is good to talk to you. Peter, you see we dont just throw this show together. dont think there is a waiting list for your liver, simon. A couple of distillers are interested i think. The disgraced hollywood producer, Harvey Weinstein, is in court this afternoon charged with rape and sexual assualt. Jurors are being selected for his trial more than two years after the allegations
against him first emerged. Some 80 women have accused mr weinstein of Sexual Misconduct but this trial relates to just two of them. He denies all claims of non consensual sex. In the last half hour, Harvey Weinsteins lawyer donna rotunna, has been speaking outside the court she claimed assistant district attorneyjoan illuzi had been trying to stop weinsteins team from giving their side. She is attempting to silence us from speaking to you and speaking to the people of new york and every country in the world frankly. Here we are, looking at a circumstance where she stands up in front of a court and calls my client a predator. Mr weinstein has a right to a fair trial. I believe she thinks he is convicted already. That is not how this works. We are hoping to pick and find a fairjury and believe thatis and find a fairjury and believe that is going to be possible and we are going to continue to press on and remind everyone that in this great country, you are innocent until proven guilty. And no evidence
has yet been presented to a court or jury, and that is why we are here to start this trial. Light rain brought some respite to australia. The rain came as a welcome respite. People in the fire zones in southern and eastern australia finally got what they had wanted for weeks. A bit of a breather for these firefighters ahead of hotter weather to come, when officials said the blazes would take off again. The picture in the fishing town of eden is very different from that on the weekend. This is what it looked like on saturday night. Many people left. Others stayed, seeking safety by the water. Eden wharf became a makeshift Evacuation Centre when the fires came close to this town. People came here, they sheltered in boats, in cars, and some in the open air, just to be close to the water. Chris and richard camped out onto the football grounds, well prepared, but unsure and confused about what to do next. I think everybody who is here would lie if they say they were not scared, if they were not anxious in regard to where they are going now. Basically, the uncertainty
as to what happens when the fire does come through, how fast is it going to come, if the wind really picks up and comes over that hill, it will be coming like a fireball. There are fears that nearly half
a billion animals are being directly affected by the fires, which continue to rip through the bushland. The rain has given people here a chance to pause and reflect, if only for a few days, but they are also bracing for what the next wave of fires will bring.
