Martin place siege. In france, a call for calm from president hollande after a car is deliberately driven into packed pedestrians, the third violent attack in as many days. And the fat one delivers for thousands of spaniards, winners in the worlds biggest christmas lottery. Hello. We start with north korea, where websites are back online after a complete shut dodown that exper say was probably caused by a cyber attack. Its not known whos responsible, but the timing of the incident is interesting. It comes just weeks after a cyber attack on Sony Pictures, which made this comedy about the north Korean Leader kim jong un. After threats, sony announced it was cancelling the release of the movie. Washington said it would launch a proportional response. North koreas internet was completely out for around nine and a half hours. Websites began to come back online a little bit later. Well, one of the first stories to run back on the staterun news service was this one about kim jong un visiting a catfish farm. Our correspondent steve evans is in seoul and he told me about chinas role in all this. Reporter there have been articles in the Chinese Press basically expressing exasperation at north korea, basically saying we dont have to support you forever. Nobody thinks thats the official leadership position of china, but the very fact that that idea is floated in the official Chinese Media indicates that somebody might want to be getting a message to pyongyang, just hold your horses a bit. China is the root of the internet into north korea, a single server in china. President obama had asked china for help. We simply dont know what the response was, if any. But people might surmise about whether china is saying well, okay, we will just yank the reins in a little bit here. At the end of it all, china will support north korea, but that doesnt mean its happy about everything which north korea does, and maybe its indicating its unease. Steve evans there in seoul. With me is the bbcs Technology Reporter dave lee. Obviously, theres speculation about whether china was involved, whether america was involved. Whats the evidence that youve got . The evidence is very, very hard to come by. China has said that theyre not involved, and any suggestion they are would be irresponsible. But the best suggestion of evidence at the moment coming from the experts that study this day in, day out is that this attack is more likely to be a small hacking group, rather than a nation state. Why is that . The scale of the attack is relatively simple. Basically, all theyve done is flooded north koreas internet with traffic to basically overwhelm the system. When your internet system is so small, doing that is a relati relatively simple task, compared to, say, shutting down a developed countrys internet instead . And who are these hacking groups . I know you said some of them have been tweeting about it. Theres a particular group called the lizard squad. They always have these crazy names. The lizard squad have been tweeting about this attack. They tweeted one of the ip addresses, which is the location of a target, and they refer to it as north koreas off button. And around the time those things were being tweeted, this is when this attack occurred. Many of these groups can claim that theyve done it when they havent, but in this case, this is just the sort of group thats of sufficient expertise to do an attack like this, but its just this kind of activist. In retaliation, perhaps, to the film being blocked. Why do you think the u. S. Wouldnt be involved . It seems, in the word of some of the experts ive seen, a crude way to make a point. If this was the u. S. s way of kind of going back against the North Koreans of retaliating in some way, it would be extremely unexpected, unprecedented, and quite a crude manner of doing things. It would be like going to a building and throwing eggs at it. Its very unlike the sort of thing you would expect a government to do. A piece that you wrote on the website about the north korean internet, the way that it works. Its very basic. Its more like a kind of company intranet, whereas only a few select sites you can see. Only a few things you can do. And its limited to a very small number of people in north korea. Diplomats and government officials. So its easy to target. Very much so, yes. Dave, thanks very much indeed. The Prime Minister of australia says there has been a heightened level of terror chatter since last weeks deadly siege at a city cafe. Tony abbott made the comments following Memorial Services of the two victims tony johnson and that karina dawson. Phil mercer has more from sydney. Reporter gunman who brought fear and panic to the heart of sydney had a history of extremism and violence. An iranian refugee forced his hostages to hold a religious flag, but wasnt thought to be part of a broader islamist conspiracy. But it seems his actions may have stirred the hornets nest. Australian Authorities Say that in the past week, theyve intercepted more chatter or communications between terrorist networks. There has been a heightened level of terrorist chatter in the aftermath of the martin place siege. Thats why its important that people remain alert and aware, as well as reassured that our police and security agencies are doing everything they humanly can to keep us safe. Reporter tori johnson was one of seven hostages held inside the cafe. His funeral was hold at st. Stephens church in sydney. Family and friends gathered to say goodbye and to remember a life that was full of love and generosity. Torrey johnson is being remembered as a hero who tried to wrench the gun from the hands of the hostagetaker. His death is one of the darkest chapters in the history of sydney. The cafe managers family wanted todays funeral to be a celebration of life that was cut short in such tragic circumstances a week ago. As the coffin left on its final journey, it was followed by five buddhist priests, dressed in orange and saffron colored robes. They murmured prayers as it was loaded into the hearse. The other victim of the siege, katrina dawson, was a mother of three young children. She reportedly died trying to shield a pregnant friend from gunfire. The 38yearold has been remembered as a service at the university of sydney. At martin place, the forecast of wet weather prompted volunteers to remove a huge carpet of floral tributes and cards, which have become a symbol of a citys sadness and solidarity. Phil mercer there. Well, phil also was bringing us right up to date with what is happening now, and tony abbotts warnings from sydney. Mr. Abbott was addressing reporters, saying that after a meeting of that National Security committee, this is a gathering of senior ministers, the Australian Federal police, and representatives of the Intelligence Community that australia has been hearing more chatter between what mr. Abbott described as sympathizers of terrorism. Now, back in september, australia raised its domestic Terror Threat level from medium to high, and that level at the moment remains on high. So mr. Abbott isnt suggesting that australia go to the next level, which would be extreme, which would mean the authorities consider an attack to be imminent. At the moment, we get the sense that mr. Abbott is trying in a way to reassure the australian population that the security agencies, that the police are doing all they can to try and make australia safe. Once again, we have to remind ourselves that the gunman behind the sydney siege was not associated as far as we know with any broader islamist plot, but certainly this is a very nervous country, and the events of the past week will make australia even more fearful, given that the authorities here are so concerned about the threat of home grown extremism. Some nervousness there in australia, according to phil mercer, and a bit of nervousness in france, too. The message from the french president francois hollande, though, is dont panic. There have been three Violent Attacks in france in the last three days. The president was speaking after a man deliberately drove a van into a crowded Christmas Market in a western city and that injured ten people. Hugh schofield is following events in paris. I asked him what the government is saying. Well, dont panic, as you say, and also dont jump to any conclusions. I think the government is very mindful of how easy it is, and natural it is maybe to link these three attacks and give them all some islamist link. But its certainly true that on the face of it, the last attack, the one that happened monday evening does not appear on the face of it to have any islamist links at all. The man who drove the van into the crowd in the Christmas Market, it seems is somebody from the village, it doesnt seem that he has any links with islamism at all. It looks like hes a man with psychological problems who may be in a kind of copycat way followed the day before, which might have had islamist connections in dijon. But this last attack does not seem to be in any way terrorist related, very much a psychological problem, as far as we know. But that is part of the problem, all of this, is that there is a rumor mill out there on social media, and after the first two attacks, first of all, where a man who we know was leaning towards islamist extremism attacked policemen, and then a car drove into pedestrians. Its obvious that the people will jump to conclusions. Its quite natural that they should and i think the government will say try and resist that temptation. More than 17,000 supporters of an antiislamic protest movement gathered in a german city. It was the tenth and largest demonstration in as many weeks. The protesters described themselves as patriots who are defending christian values and traditions. To greece now. The country has edged one step closer to a general election and renewed political turmoil. Mps have failed to elect a president in a second vote in parliament. The governmentbacked candidate failed to get the 200 votes he needed. A third and final vote will be held on december 29th. With me is our business presenter jamie robertson. Why is he struggling so much . All the votes came in blank against him. They need another 12 votes, in fact, to be able to get him elected. If they done get it by december 29th, you have earlier elections. And the chances are, if there is an earlier election, which is a new left wing party, didnt start until 2008. A very modern party, which almost won in 2012. But the chances are that it will probably win the election. And they are arguing the country most renegotiate the bailout, which affects the whole eurozone stability. Theres a lot of worrying reports, worrying ideas that the eu might cut off funds if they get this kind of blackmail coming from there, saying were not going to pay this debt, basically cant pay, wont pay approach. But i think syria has moderated its views over the last few months. It does talk about a negotiator solution. At one point, it said it was simply going to default on the debt. Its also not going to reverse many Pension Reforms and the wage cuts which have been carried out over the last five years. Its not going to go back on some of the privatizations. Not talk about nationalization again. Theyre not quite as extreme. As i say, theyre talking about a negotiated solution to the debt problem, not actually a sort of take it or leave it approach. How worried will the eurozone leaders be there now . I think worried because you dont know whats going to happen after an election. You dont know how strong the support for them would be. Theyre talking about repaying the debt through growth, not actually writing all of it off. And theyre talking also about a war against tax avoidance, which would be extremely popular and no ones going to argue with it. Yeah, tax collection, one of many difficulties in greece. Thanks. Whilst australians are being warned that a terror attack is likely, new information is emerging about the militant Islamic State group. A journalist has told the bbc the group is more brutal and harder to confront than hed expected. Sorry, pardon me. He spent ten days in mosul and iraq. The bbc spoke to him about what he found. Reporter this was his route into mosul, past border post buildings obliterated by i. S. Fighters. This was once the internationally recognized frontier between syria and iraq. Now in. S. Fighters busy entrenching a brutal bureaucracy, apparently unperrer then unperturbed. Everyone left must abide by strict sharia law. He found women virtually invisible. Men are even instructed on how to position themselves when they pray. Now safely back home, he told me of a terrifying trip. I thought i would meet a brutal terrorist group, and i met a brutal country. The leaders are fighters of a very brutal and very powerful country. In mosul, he heard the police no longer need to carry out violent punishments. Fear, it seems, is a powerful e deterrent. He negotiated access with the german jihadi for months, managing to get paperwork from the socalled office of the kalif. I had the impression they want to show that their Islamic State is working. He saw how theyre pumping out propaganda. These are new brochures, which explain to the population of mosul, of the Islamic State how to treat the slaves, how to treat women, how to pray, and so on. Reporter women are left in no doubt how they must dress. The community of experts are pretty well agreed that there was an attack. But theres also debate within these circles about whether it was the u. S. Or not, and quite a lot of people are saying its much more likely to be groups like lizard, these are the names of these groups online. Or anonymous. Now, by the end of the month, most american combat troops will have left afghanistan and returned home, adding to the hundreds of thousands of veterans already back in the United States. Captain john irkheart received wounds to his head and body, but like a fifth of all combat vets, his biggest problem started after he left the military. Flashbacks started happening. I started seeing images of bodies. Just horrible pictures in my mind, images. And then i would see faces of the marines on other people that were walking by. The two soldiers and marines are being put on this heavily Armored Vehicle to be taken safely back to a more secure base. Its an illustration that even now, as u. S. Combat troops are pulling out of afghanistan, the dangers are very real. Later, we learned that two taliban rockets had hit the prison on the base. 40 inmates were injured, some seriously. For the vets, its a stark reminder of what its like to be back on the front line and that americas wars are not over. With iraq basically handed over to isis, the progress that we made there.
