Untoward in this regard or that the properties were sold to enable the accused to take flight, for example, the state would have investigated this matter long ago. I did not hear state counsel to say that the state was taken by surprise by this information that is the properties of the accused were sold. If the state has said that this information had taken it by surprise, it would have been a different situation. That because the accused there was now a likelihood that he might flee. Lastly, i am in agreement with defense counsel that if in future there was any incident which entitled the state to make or to approach any court to make an application, to have the bail of the accused cancelled, the state would be free to do so. In regard to the above, i have used my discretion in favor of the accused. I grant the application to extend the bail of the accused on the same conditions. With regard to the dates my lady, we ask you to consider a date in october. Yes. Do you have a specific date in mind . The 13th through the 16th of october. 13th is a monday. The 16th is 13th to 17th. I will postpone it and see what happens. We will be available. Thank you very much. Thats october. Please speak to the uncle of the accused. Its important that on the 13th of october when the accused is coming back for the sentence, there arent any further complications. Thank you. Anything else . Nothing from our side. Thank you. The court will adjourn. Reporter well there we are. You can see Oscar Pistorius there. Just as we leave those pictures from inside court, what we have learned in those last few minutes before the court adjourned is that the judge has granted Oscar Pistorius bail until his sentencing. He will continue to live at the house of his uncle where he has lived for the last 18 months since he was given bail, and he has not insisted that he spends time in custody until sentencing. In a few minutes time perhaps, some point in the near future, Oscar Pistorius, despite being convicted of culpable homicide in the killing of Reeva Steenkamp, will walk from court through the usual entrance. He will not be spending time in custody. At least not until the sentencing. We heard dates in october being mentioned there. The 13th of october for the process of sentencing to begin. So we think that is going to be agreed upon. So that is the situation. Oscar pistorius will walk from court this afternoon, a conviction for culpable homicide now to his name, but for the moment, at the moment at least free to live at his uncles house just outside pretoria, in a suburb of the city. Im just going to discuss the process now with former judge willem heath about what actually happens when that date comes. How quick how much is satisfied for the actual argument, how quickly is it before the accused knows their fate . First of all, they know the dates. The counsel can prepare for the dates. Called upon by the judge to supplement documents for her to study. So the time it would take in court, at the longest, would be a day. But not even a day. Reporter okay. So theres some process of actually hearing the arguments about the sentencing, and then a pause before the actual sentence is handed down. If they decide to call witnesses, that can take longer. But so much of the evidence is already psychological evidence. So that type of thing, that sort of information so i would think by the third day in october, he would be sentenced. Reporter thats fascinating. So just over a month until Oscar Pistorius knows if he will be going to prison or not. And in the meantime, he continues to live at the house with his uncle. Has he got any restrictions on him . Well, the court doesnt impose his restrictions. If they want to report to the Police Station every day, or once a week, that will continue to apply. Shes just extended the bail. As far as those conditions are concerned. Its not that often. So i think he would like to go. Reporter just to remind you what we are watching, were watching the pictures from just outside court, because we are expecting Oscar Pistorius to leave the building at some point in the very near future. We will see the families of Oscar Pistorius and of the victim Reeva Steenkamp begin to come out. Of course, were going to try and talk to them, or hear what they have to say, if theyre giving any kind of verbal statement as they come out. There is another clamor, of course, of media outside waiting to hear their reaction. Weve seen a very relieved looking Oscar Pistorius coming into court, even before he heard that culpable homicide guilty verdict, not officially being convicted of murder. So he already looked like a relieved man, knowing he was not going to be convicted of murder, but now we find out if Oscar Pistorius well, he found out that he will now be free to live at his uncles house at least until the 13th of november. And we are monitoring whats going on. Barry is declining to comment, but he has a big smile on his face. His client will not be going to prison for murder. Instead, he has been convicted of a lesser charge of culpable homicide. So were going to keep an eye on what is going on outside court now that everybody is starting to emerge. Somebody convicted of culpable homicide, a serious charge. A woman was shot dead. Its quite common, it depends on the circumstances by the judge. And she obviously doesnt concern the evidence of what occurred that serious. Its quite common. Reporter and the fact that Oscar Pistorius is granted bail way back in february 2013 at the initial bail hearing on a charge of premeditated murder, that caused a great deal of controversy at the time. Yes. But at the same time, if she had the confidence at that point in time, it does not apply. Reporter going to show you the exact moment that judge Christina Perez gra judge mas granted Oscar Pistorius bail. I have used my discretion in favor of the accused. I grant the application to extend the bail of the accused on the same condition. So were watching as the media crowd is now fully expecting Oscar Pistorius to emerge. 43 days of this trial, over the course of six months. That same clamor for a comment from him to gauge some kind of sense of what he is thinking as he walks into court and then leaves again. But this is a man who is leaving not with a charge of premeditated murder hanging over him. Not one of murder at all. But now a conviction, a criminal conviction for culpable homicide. So people are even taken to great lengths, sitting up on the tops of the walls. Were watching cameras poking out of high stories up in the Court Building. The media are everywhere on this trial. It has caused such interest given the celebrity nature of the accused. Now lets take ourselves back to what judge masipa said as she pronounced her verdict in this case on the charges that Oscar Pistorius was facing. This happened a little earlier today. Evidence was purely circumstantial. Moreover, the evidence of witnesses who gave evidence on what they heard, in what sequence, and when proved to be unreliable. Although it is not necessary for the state to prove motive, there is no basis on this which court could make inferences of why the accused would want to kill the deceased. As we wait for Oscar Pistorius and the key members of his family and the victims family, Reeva Steenkamps family to come out of court, talking to former High Court Judge willem heath about the implications of this trial and the way the last few days have panned out. This moment came early on when judge masipa threw a lot of the states case out of the window effectively. What sort of reaction has there been about the way this this case has gone . Well, theres a lot of negative comments. Theres a lot of lawyers saying she did not analyze the law character, that she did not analyze the facts correctly. But when you consider the judgment, its evidence that she concerned the facts, that she concerned the law and thats all shes required to do. Theres a lot of criticism. They thought she should have convicted the accused of murder, and therefore theres a lot of unhappiness. Find themselves actually in the same position that she found herself in. Obviously this trial has so much attention on it because of the celebrity nature of the accused and the victim. I mean, does this happen with other trials, that all the other lawyers out there think a judge should have done things differently. Did you have that sense of a backlash at any decision . Me personally, no. It does happen from time to time. Not to the extent of this one. You wouldnt expect those comments. As far as such cases are concerned, trying to get advocates involved in the case. The prosecutor would like to see. That doesnt always result in an appeal. I mean, there has been speculation that the state now will appeal this on a legal basis. What is the process . Well, usually at the moment, a sentence is imposed. If it doesnt happen immediately as the sentence is imposed, then a judge must normally call for argument and postpone to a date. If the presiding judge does not grant the appeal, a petition must be lodged and a number of judges would then consider the prospect and why it should not be granted. Its very common, but thats the process. And by that time, of course, almost a year would have gone. And at the same time, waits for a date. So the timeline is actually about two years before the appeal. Reporter thats a very lengthy process if there is an appeal. Is it an unusual thing for a state to appeal a judges verdict . To take that long . Reporter just to appeal it in the first place. How common is it that that happens . Its very common. Theyre running the risk for a conviction, so they could have to carefully analyze that and consider. Reporter were still waiting here for the key people in this trial to emerge. Weve seen the lead counsel for the defense coming out with a large smile on his face, but refusing to talk, spend any time commenting to the media. Oscar pistoriuss defense counsel whos become so familiar over the past few months. The crowds of media are waiting. There are also lots of crowds of Oscar Pistorius supporters. Weve seen this display of affection for Oscar Pistorius by a certain number of people who have chosen to actually come to court to tell him that they supported him throughout. But weve also seen campaigns for the victim, Reeva Steenkamp, every day in court the anc, the African National congressWomens League is there in solidarity with row rhee and female victims of violence. Varying opinions about the case all the way through, outside and inside court. Im with willem heath, the former High Court Judge, analyzing the implications for Oscar Pistorius now, just going back to where we are, he has been granted continuation of bail, convicted of culpable homicide, and now awaiting sentence we think mid october. Yes, very much so. Reporter and we talked also about the considerations the judge will make, and the fors and the againsts. Judge masipa sentenced someone for over 200 years for serial rape. We cant tell, though. Can you gauge anything from her behavior in court so far . No, shes been playing such an objective role. Probably on purpose. Its difficult to judge it. Shes already found that the accused was actually in selfdefense. Because of those circumstances. So she can hardly ignore that when the sentence is imposed. So the killing happened during the course of that situation. So with that in mind. Reporter we talked when we were discussing this yesterday not knowing what the verdict was going to be about the public pressure on a judge and how much a judge has to ignore that, the clamor on a huge celebrity case like this, for there to be justice. And knowing what public reaction will be if a sentence is light. What kind of judge what can a judge do about this . Do they have to just blinker themselves . They need to toe kus on tfoc case. Shes had many years of experience. A judge is not supposed to read the papers today or watch the tv because it might slightly influence her. Shes a human being. She would probably not be influenced by that. Reporter while youre talking, we just heard a rather loud cheer from the direction of the court. Havent had any indications that that is Oscar Pistorius leaving court. That could be any minute now. Theres certainly been a clamor, but not entirely sure whether Oscar Pistorius has started to make his way out of the building. Im just seeing cameramen pretty much everywhere. Just watching the pictures you can see now. Here comes Oscar Pistorius. There he is, leaving the Court Building here in pretoria, convicted of culpable homicide, but not of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Leaving on bail to continue to live at his uncles house until he is sentenced next month. But a huge cheer, screams from the fans weve seen turning up every day here at court. But Oscar Pistorius with pretty much a smile on his face. A very, very clear look of relief walking out the Court Building. To get into the car to take him back to his uncles house, just in the suburbs, the leafy suburbs of pretoria. Apologizes for all the movement on the camera. Obviously you understand it is very hard to get a fixed picture in such a situation. I think you get a flavor of the clamor. Over the last couple of days, absolute frenetic nature of the jostling outside court, literally sweeping you off your feet if youre stuck in the middle of it. Everybody and anybody trying to get a picture of Oscar Pistorius, so far remained pretty silent throughout the 43 days hes been coming to court. Barely saying a word. And certainly the last couple of days, absolutely no word at all from him as he leaves court. But Oscar Pistorius has left the high court a convicted criminal, but crucially, not convicted of the murder of Reeva Steenkamp. Instead, a culpable homicide in her killing. Im with judge willem heath. Weve been watching these pictures from outside court and weve been watching all the developments from inside court. What were going to do now is analyze the implications of that conviction of culpable homicide for Oscar Pistorius. He leaves court a convicted criminal. Such a long legal journey this has been since the 14th of february 2013. My colleague Andrew Harding has this report on the implications now for Oscar Pistorius. Reporter Oscar Pistorius shortly after he had killed Reeva Steenkamp. From the very beginning, he insisted it was a terrible mistake, that he and reeva seen arriving at his home a few hours earlier were very much in love. I was simply trying to protect reeva. I can promise that when she went to bed that night, she felt loved. Reporter in court, but not shown on the cameras, pistorius maintained that he shot through his bathroom door, convinced an intruder had broken into his home. His grief and regret were compelling. And i sat over reeva and i cried. And i dont know how long i was there for. She wasnt breathing. Reporter pistoriuss defense made much of the athletes vulnerability as a disabled man, confronting a perceived threat. His capacity to walk without his prosthesis is poor. His balance is poor and he could easily be pushed over. When exposed to a threat, mr. Pistorius is more likely to respond with a fight response rather than a flight response as his physical capacity for flight is limited. Reporter the prosecution sought to show there was a darker side to pistorius. His obsession with guns, his quick temper, and his questioned how the athlete could have made such a terrible mistake. She is sitting inches away from you in the toilet. Thats correct, my lady. And she never uttered a word. Thats correct. Its not possible. Its not probable. But at the heart of this case was the question of what pistorius was thinking when he shot four times through the toilet door. I heard this noise and i thought it was somebody coming out to attack me so i fired my firearm. Your defense has now changed, sir. Selfdefense to involuntary action. I dont understand the law, but i can reply and tell the court what im asked and i can reply as to what i thought. Reporter todays verdict suggests the judge believed pistoriuss explanation. I believe that the judge was swayed by his demeanor on the stand. The judge was swayed by the evidence that was procured by the defense, including the psychological impact that his childhood may have had on him as well as the experts that were brought in by the defense. Reporter this is almost certainly the best verdict Oscar Pistorius could have hoped for. It means the prosecution failed to convince the judge that the athlete meant to kill anybody. But it still means the judge found him criminally negligent. System of Reeva Steenkamps friends have already criticized the verdict. It is unfair. But it doesnt surprise me, and in fact, its pretty much what i expected from the outset. Reporter because . Because he can afford the best possible defense and private investigators to support his case. Reporter Oscar Pistorius has yet to be sentenced. A prison term is very likely, up to 15 years, but a judge has the option simply to fine him and free him. Andrew harding, bbc news, pretoria. Reporter for now, though, Oscar Pistorius walks free, at least until the day of sentencing inned my october. Lets just show you the scene a few minutes ago as he left the court. The weight of that potential murder charge off his shoulders now. Culpable homicide with what he is convicted for. And you can see he looks visibly relieved, visibly lighter look about him than he has as hes come into court pretty much ashenfaced at some points this trial in what seems to be a great state of anxiety. But Oscar Pistorius, as you can see the clamor as well, because it has been nonstop. The roar when hes emerging from court every day and coming into court with the yaed tmedia tryi get his attention. You can see the level of interest and passion of some of his supporters, literally giving him some sort of rock star reception as he arrived each day throughout this trial. But of course, what an ending this has been. A conviction for culpable homicide. Now a convicted criminal, compared to where Oscar Pistorius was before the terrible events of the 14th of february last year when he shot dead Reeva Steenkamp. Perhaps reminding ourselves why the interest in this case is one murder trial in a country that experiences so many murders each year, particularly women, why one murder trial has attracted so much attention. Dan rowen has this look back at this astonishing fall from grace for Oscar Pistorius. Reporter Oscar Pistorius did more than win races. He changed the way the world viewed disability. But long before he became extraordinary, ordinary was all he wanted to be. They may call me the blade runner, but im just oscar. I was born with missing calf bones, my parents made the very difficult decision of getting my legs amputated, but today i can look back and say that they definitely made the right decision. One of the great paralympic athletes of all time. Reporter few know pistorius as well as his longtime training partner here in pretoria. I cant count how many times he helped me. I can say oscar is a gentleman. Reporter at school, pistorius was given carbon fiber prosthetics and began to run. It was here in pretoria in march 2004 when a teenage pistorius, after just two months of training with blades, showed just how good he was. Running the 100 meters in just 11. 51 seconds, a new world record. Confidence was no problem, as pistorius told the bbc in 2007. I put in more hours, i eat better, i sleep better, race better, and i train better than other guys. Oscar pistorius is flying away from all of them. 21. 99. My goodness. Reporter paralympic golds followed in athens and beijing. By now, pistorius became a brand. They told me that id never walk and a man with no legs cant run. Anything else you want to tell me . Reporter at london, he became the first amputee to run at the olympics. But by now, stories were also emerging of another side to his character. David osullivan has known pistorius since he was a boy. A roommate of Oscar Pistorius told me he had to move out of their room because oscar had gone hysterical on the phone, was shouting on the phone, he was shouting and screaming at his then girlfriend and a man who had taken this girl out on an overseas trip. I heard the story confirmed by so many other athletes who said it was terrible to witness this incredible meltdown. Reporter he later insisted he left his teammates room on medical advice before a big race, but rumors about pistoriuss private life persisted. He really seemed to be a different person to the public persona that he was presenting. You heard about the fast cars, how he was an insomniac, used to go to the shooting range in the middle of the night. So there were more and more of these incidents that were happening, which showed oscar to be more volatile, more aggressive. Reporter there was controversy on the track, too, having lost to a brazilian in the 200 meters final in london, pistorius suggested his rival had cheated. Translator he said there was something wrong with my blades. After all that, it was difficult for me to stand beside him. He saw me at the Olympic Village and refused to talk to me. Reporter but the man whos become the new poster boy of paralympic sport told me that pistorius was also capable of surprising generosity. In the final in london, he said just before, do you mind if i pray for you . And he was a nice person, to be there. A crazy situation, but i think it says in itself, he made that first breakthrough. Reporter at Pretoria University where pistorius based his training, a new generation of paralympic hopefuls remain loyal. Hes still an inspiration to me, even though his circumstances. As i lost my leg, i saw him doing so well without two legs and he was a role model of mine. Reporter as an athlete, superhuman. As a man, flawed. Pistorius will now be defined by events away from the track. Sports ultimate fall from grace is complete. Dan rowen, bbc news, pretoria. Reporter all the focus has been on Oscar Pistorius, the accused. But we havent heard from the victims family Reeva Steenkamp. We havent heard from her family yet. We will, of course, be bringing you reaction there has been from her family. Her mother has been in court every day of this trial, and in the latter stages of the trial, her father barry has also been in this court. And june has largely remained impassive, staring straight ahead as Oscar Pistorius threw out even some very gruesome details about the injuries her daughter sustained, showing incredible fortitude as she was faced with the repetition of details about the way her daughter died. Lets discuss what implications are now for Oscar Pistorius, a man who has just left the Court Building to go to his uncles house to live for the next month, continuing his bail there, rather than be retained in custody until sentencing next month. Professor from the university of south africa is with me, as we look at those pictures of Oscar Pistorius coming out, looking a very relieved man. Not convicted of murder. Convicted of a lesser charge of culpable homicide. Weve now seen Oscar Pistorius effectively free, if you can call it that way, until that date of the sentencing hearing begins. What can we expect from that date . Of that date, the thidefense will present their information about all the facts that they feel would be relevant on the sentence. And then after that, the prosecution will get the opportunity to do the same. In fact, the prosecution will get the opportunity to prove previous convictions first of all. But oscar doesnt have previous convictions. And then they will also try to convince the judge to they may try to convince the judge to settle on one form of sentence or another. Its likely that the prosecution will say that he should stay in prison for a long time. They might want to argue an alternative must be argued in this case. As far as manslaughter or culpable homicide is concerned, it is a wide ranging charge. It can carry a very high prison sentence. Yes. There is no limit in this case. Not on the borkt not at the top. Mostly bound by previous Appellate Court judgments. Either People Killed in motorcycle accidents or the guilt, the negligence of an offend fer in this situation, a the court may try to look for a similar case, similar level of culpability of the offender. It may be difficult, but that could be the situation. Reporter thank you very much. Were just learning that Oscar Pistoriuss uncle, the man hes been living with the last 18 months here in pretoria, is due to give a statement at 13 45 local time, which will be in about ten minutes local time. We will bring that here live on the bbc as we get it. For now, though, from here in pretoria, back to you in london. Karin, thank you very much indeed. A lot more coverage to bring you on Oscar Pistorius. I just want to break away briefly, because weve had some breaking news in just the last few minutes. Certainly significant news here in the united kingdom, because ian paisley, who has been for so long the leader of the Democratic Union party, a key figure in Northern Ireland over decades, and at one point first minister, we are just learning that he has died. That news just coming into us. Well have some more for you on that. But just to let you know that ian paisley, reverend ian paisley in irish politics for so long, he has died. I think must have been late 80s, maybe 88, and well have more on that for you. Lets get back now, though, to the pistorius trial. Lets face it, its a trial which has been watched pretty much all around the world. Nowhere more so than in south africa. But lets just talk about the sort of public reaction to these verdicts, and to do that, im joined by our africa editor, who covered so much of the trial itself, and our social media producer. Elaine, if i could start with you, just give us a sense of how big a deal. In social media terms its been a monster. Yeah, exactly. Its been some really strong reaction online, across the twitter world, people have been trending hashtags from the trial since it began, but today in particular now that pistorius has been found guilty of culpable homicide. And we can bring up a heat map for you now just to show how farreaching that trend is. Obviously theres a lot of activity across south africa. It doesnt seem to be popping up there at the moment. But should be having some green splotches coming up across the uk as well. Thats been trending quite highly. Obviously from a lot of the Media Attention here as well. Obviously theres been some hashtags that started a while back. Thats popped up. And thats justice for reeva. A lot of people expressing their shock and dismay over the judges decision. We can bring up some of those tweets now for you as well. For an example, what are the odds of firing four shots into a room that size and not killing someone. Theres also this. There has been no justice for reeva, thats from a woman in ireland. Another one. I wouldnt be surprised if the judge found reeva guilty of being in the way of his bullets. Thats from a man in australia. And the next one. How could the courts rule any other way than guilty of murder. Ridiculous decision. Obviously some strong reaction there. Although not trending quite as highly as justice for reeva, there is also justiceforoscar and let oscar walk. Also people commemorating the death of reeva. I think this tweet sums it up quite nicely. The brouhaha about the guilty verdict in the Oscar Pistorius trip. Lets take a few minutes to remember Reeva Steenkamp and her family. We do get wrapped up in the drama of all this. Milton, you would know that better than anyone having witnessed so much of the case and knowing south africa as you do, obviously. There has been this tendency to say we have a distinguished black female judge versus a white male africana sporting hero, and that in itself is almost a fable of south africa. You understand why people would see it that way. Race always comes into this. Ive been looking at the twitter feed overnight. A lot of people have been saying if it was a black man, probably the decision would have been different. And the verdict would have different. And they were pointing at a very interesting story of a South African black artist, a musician who was drag racing, and they lost control of their car, hitting School Children who are walking on the side. Four of them died. This man was convicted of murder. Not of culpable homicide as it was indeed the case. It was unprecedented. So they were comparing what is the difference between Oscar Pistorius and this artist. I suppose there is a worry that this has all been televised, open to south African Society from one end to the other. Every sector of society can see how the wheels of justice turn. The idea is thats a great thing. And a great educational tool as well. If the message is one youve just given us an example of, it hasnt really fulfilled its brief. This case brings out a whole lot of angles. It brings out south africas problems about gun crime. You mentioned the racial dynamic and i gave you that example. But also it brings up gender violence. There is a lot of violence against women by their partners in south africa. Thats why the Womens League has been sitting side by side with ms. Steenkamps mother in court supporting it, because they wanted to yauz this case as an example for those men who think that beating up women isu an example for those men who think that beating up women is a sport. The Steenkamp Family and some remarks being delivered there. Can we hear the remarks in court . We will not take any questions, so once hes made his statement, he will leave immediately. Thank you very much for your patience and your interest in this case. On behalf of the family, we would really like to show our deep gratitude to judge masipa that has found oscar not guilty of murder. Its a big burden off our shoulders and oscar. We always knew at this stage, however, the matter remains before the court. It would be highly inappropriate for the family to make any further statements at this stage regarding merits of the case and findings of the court. We respect the fact that the Legal Process is not over and must always been run in the course of justice. And furthermore, a tragic event like this, we as a family remain deeply affected by the devastating tragedy events. And it wont bring reeva back, but our hearts do go out for her family and friends. We do not wish to make any further statements. Unfortunately, there wont be any questions. Thank you very much for your time. Arnold pistorius, the father figure to Oscar Pistorius, the man who has been looking after oscar for many months now at his home, just delivering a pretty straight statement there off the back of the verdict delivered by judge masipa of culpable homicide. With me is milton. You followed this to the nth degree. There is a man who has played an absolutely Critical Role in Oscar Pistoriuss life. Probably never more so than in the last few months, though. Very much so. Oscar pistorius lives in uncle arnolds house, his uncle. Every day when we see him arrive or leave the court, he is arriving from his home and going back to his home. So uncle arnold is a critical figure in Oscar Pistoriuss life. But what this means is that now south africa as a country has to go back to the drawing board, because this has brought up, david, the argument between having a jury system and having a legal mind looking at a trial such as this one. Because clearly, here the judge was following the law to the letter in a very technical sense, and the nation, as i watch reaction from across the piece in south africa and indeed across the world, as its happened here in london, theres a lot of emotion that is not in this verdict. A lot of people are feeling quite emotional about it. So probably if there was a jury looking at this trial, we would have had a different verdict. Gut reaction of a jury versus cold rationale of the thoroughly qualified judge. Well have to leave it there. Thank you very much indeed for that. Should just say weve got so much more for you on the Oscar Pistorius trial. We have a special program here on bbc world to take into account that verdict, and you can see it on the channel later in the day. 19 30 gmt. Make sure youre with us for that. Okay, lets catch up on other aspects of world news. Business, aaron . And sanctions. Thanks very much, david. Hello there. Yes, another round of tougher eu sanctions against russia. They have been introduced today as the block of countries looked at well, theyre basically looking to ramp up the pressure on him, on the kremlin. Energy companies, like gazprom, will have their access to european Financial Markets restricted. Deep water and Arctic Oil Exploration were also on the hit list with new shale oil projects, theyre no longer going ahead. In addition, five russian banks in the countrys Defense Companies are no longer able to raise money from the european markets. Plus, another 24 of the kremlins most influential figures, theyre going to face visa bans and asset freezes. The aim of all of this is to keep pressure on russia over its role in the ukraine crisis. Russia says its preparing its respon response. Lets go straight over to russia. Great to have you on the program. Do these sanctions mean a recession in russia is a given . I dont know if it is so. This round of sanctions is the most sensitive because it deals with the biggest state corporations and banks. Maybe in the next year. In this year, i expect some dissimulation in the economy, but their consumption sector is not in recession until now. Where are some of these Russian Companies going to try and raise funds . Theyre locked out of european markets. Yes. Theyre very dependent on foreign financing. Its about 650 billion. Its still from december of 2013. But they need money to refinance this debt. They hope that they find some money in asia. But im not sure its enough, so the problems are there. Everybody is waiting for moscows response. How do you think moscow will retaliate . We know the response, its about the restrictions on the import of some sort of clothes and cars. Clothes, i dont know exactly. It is not very sensitive for russian markets. Its interesting because foreign cars, its about 25 of the russian market. I think it will be a problem, some problems for Russian Consumers also, because you see that prices will rise for cars in russia. One of the biggest part of consumers of this sector of european cars is russian political and economic league. Those close to putin and those high officials and so on. How they will be without foreign car, i do not know. Were going to have to wait and see on that one. We really appreciate your time. Thank you very much for hanging around and waiting for the interview. Appreciate it. Barclays has named one of scotlands most senior businessmen as its next chairman. John macfarlane will take over as chairman of the bank at the end of the 2015 annual shareholder meeting, which is usually held in april. A california judge has fined the computer giant hewlettpackard 58. 8 million for bribing russian government officials. Hp had pleaded guilty to violating the foreign corrupt practices act by paying to secure a major i. T. Project with the office of the prosecutor general in russia. Yahoo says that the u. S. Government threatened to fine it 250,000 a day if the search giant failed to hand over user data. According to court documents, the National Security agency, the nsa, demanded that yahoo comply with new surveillance rules but yahoo claimed sufficient an order was unconstitutional. Even though the court eventually ruled against yahoos challenge, it has ordered that some documents about the 2008 case are made public. There you go. Lots going on. Follow me on twitter. And also, of course, before we come to the end of the program, let me just remind you of our top story. The South African athlete Oscar Pistorius found guilty of culpable homicide. Effectively a manslaughter charge for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The judge said that pistorius had acted with criminal negligence when he used his gun, but she did clear him of murder. Hed argue that he mistook Reeva Steenkamp for an intruder. We have to wait for october 13th now for the process of sentencing to begin. In the meantime, pistorius will remain on bail, staying with his uncle as he has done throughout the curse of the trial. Thats the very latest. Thanks for watching gmt here on bbc world news.
