Proceedings against luis suarez as he bites an italian opponent at the world cup. Well hear how people in his native uruguay reacted. And 60 years ago today, this young ethnic rubble hijacked a burmese passenger plane. Only now can we hear his story. Hello. We start in ukraine where the ceasefire appears to be under threat. Russia says it supports the truce and Vladimir Putin asked the Russian Senate to revoke his right to intervene militarily in ukraine. While that vote has just taken place, the president s right to send troops into ukraine has now been overturned. But sporadic fighting is continuing between russian separatists and ukrainian forces. A military helicopter was shot down on tuesday, killing all nine people on board. Kiev accused russian separatists of being behind that attack. Nato leaders are now meeting in brussels, looking at options to resolve the crisis. What can nato do . There are possible plans that include sending a funding money to boost ukraines defenses. Military advisers could be sent to ukraine if needed. But nato has stressed they will not send in any weapons. The British Foreign secretary Willi William hague said the lack of action to back it up would strengthen the case for sanctions. Ukraine, president poroshenko presented a very good plan, a very wise peace plan, including for dialogue in eastern ukraine. But while there have been welcome words from russia about that, we have not seen yet the actions to go with that. And including tragically the shooting down of a ukrainian helicopter yesterday with the death of nine more people. So we urge russia to take the necessary action to stop the flow of arms across the border, to stop supporting illegally armed separatist groups in eastern ukraine. Because in the absence of that action by russia, the case for stronger sanctions it from European Union nations of course will become stronger. William hague there, the British Foreign secretary. What is your sense of russias potential response to the mood coming out of brussels . Well, russia is doing what it can in public, at least, they spoke in the Federation Council, the senate of russia, up by 153 votes to 1, which revokes the permission that was given by the Federation Council back in marce militarily. They hope thats a strong symbol to the west theyre serious about this. As you heard from William Hague there and from angela merkel, the german chancellor this morning, there is still great concerns in the west that the russians havent been able to stop to seal that border to stop the flow of weapons across the border. Angela merkel talking about further weaponry coming across the border since the ceasefire. And, of course that shooting down of the helicopter yesterday, which has been claimed by the pro russia armed men in the town of slovyansk. They say they shot down that helicopter. They effectively said they dont recognize the ceasefire that was declared by some of the leadership of the pro russian rebels. So sort of very, very delicate situation, just a couple of days away now from the deadline set by the ukrainian president , petro poroshenko, for negotiations to have been completed and there is a great concern that if the situation doesnt reach suitably settled place, then a very serious outbreak of fighting could begin on the weekend. Isnt it clear, daniel, just how much of a link there is between the separatist groups in moscow and a lot of discussion of that over the last few months. But we have seen this shift, this parliamentary vote in moscow today. First of all, it is not the crimea scenario, what were russian soldiers came out of their bases and stood around the ukrainian bases and prevented ukrainian troops from coming out to defend their own territory. That is not what youre seeing in eastern ukraine. What we see on the ground, in eastern ukraine, is quite a lot of ukrainians, but with what appears to be very modern weaponry, which seems to have come across the border from russia. There are some people in the leadership of the russian Rebel Movement who are absolutely from russia. The military commander based in slovyansk for one, hes very much from russia. And there are others in the leadership who are from russia. Whether they were under direct control of the kremlin is much less clear. Theyre sponsored by wealthy people in russia, it seems, and seems to be quite a lot of blind eye being turned to the activities on the russian side of the border in terms of their ability to acquire weaponry. What isnt clear is to what extent they are, as it were, being operated by the kremlin or to what extent theyre kind of driving themselves with some tacit support from the kremlin at times. Understood. Daniel, thank you very much. Hundreds of heavily armed taliban militants in afghanistan have attacked Police Checkpoints in helmand. The clashes began on the border with pakistan and spread to three other districts. Local Officials Say more than a thousand militants are involved and hundreds of families have been displaced. Lets go to kabul. Haran najaf is on the line there for us. Tell us what happened. It sounds like a very big force there. Well, this is the fifth day that the talibans attack continues in parts of Helmand Province. Attacking an area between afghanistan and pakistan and they moved on to attack there were hundreds of taliban who wanted to gain territory after the drawdown of International Troops in that southern part of afghanistan. But reports say they have not been successful in doing that. There are heavy casualties on both sides. We know there are 100 taliban fighters were killed in attacks and at least 40 afghan troops, about 35 civilians. And how worried are kabul, the government there, by this . Because, of course, you know, the withdrawal of u. S. Troops has been a big issue. You see the sort of changing shift in territory. Are they worried . Do they think this is some sort of seasonal move . Given the Afghan Forces lack air support, and air power to counterattack the, you know, the taliban who are coming in huge numbers and according to afghan officials many of them are foreigners and from pakistan. But the fact is that Afghan Government in kabul say they do not need to send reinforcements from the capital because they have thousands of afghan commanders and Afghan Military troops down in helmand and theyre quite capable to deal with that. We know that the taliban, in spite of that, you know, strong and well coordinated attack, have not been able to capture or gain sangeen, which is known to be very, you know, insecure and volatile area. After all, given that the taliban has basically spring offensive is going on, it is expected such attacks will happen again and again. Okay, haran, many thanks. Hollywood star eli wallach, whos best known films are the magnificent seven and good, bad and ugly has died at 98. He began in 1956 after ten years on the stage, his portrayal of calvera is regarded as his definitive role. He received an honorary oscar three years ago. Latest world cup news, Disciplinary Proceedings have begun against the uruguayen striker luis suarez. Fifa is investigating footage of suarez appearing to bite an italian defender on the shoulder during uruguays victory. Well, with me is robesso bellow. The British Press have gone very big on this, i would say. What is the reaction in uruguay . First reaction is happiness. Uruguay got through to the next stage. And the bite incident did not influence that result. That was number one thing. Everybody is quite concerned because uruguay team has got suarez as one of the key players. And so people are quite worried about what can happen if he is banned for 24 match or two years. Exactly. He if hes found to have done this biting incident, he would be banned. Is that the assumption . Well, fifa can establish that penalty, which is immediately . Exactly. So it is not only uruguay fans that will be worried. I can imagine liverpool fans here in england will be he plays ball here. Exactly. Everybody in social media have been well taking a more tongue in cheek approach. There are some very funny, you know, suarez, like a vampire and a joke that uruguay will have this very traditional and say, well, actually, the player, the italian player he allegedly was already taking hes already been converted. And, yes, in every aspect of the publicity around the world cub, suarez is the key figure as well. Some people here said if this is true, not the first biting incident. Third one. Third. Then this is absolutely appalling. It is terribly is that the reaction. I think there is a bit of embarrassment. At the end of the day, well, you know, if they happened in last world cup with the hand with which he stopped the ghana goal and he was red card, suspended and ghana got the penalty. So i think, it is part of football. But being the third time he potentially is pulled off and with quite serious, you know, ban for this, i think it, you know, it is concern for absolutely everybody. For those that havent fol w followed these things, uruguay beat england. I hear there is some criticism of the English Media on this thing, that the British Press are being quite hostile, unfairly. You have to remember he was elected best player, you know, for last year. Yes. Star player. I think it is just how good a player he is in the field and not the attitudes which are it puts him in controversy with, you know, so now hes controversial. I guess in the future he will be part of the football history. Roberto belo, many thanks indeed. Well see what happens. Just a reminder, much more on the world cup at the website for you. As nato declares no sign that russia is respecting its International Commitments in ukraine, there is a warning from britain of tougher sanctions. We urge russia to take the necessary action to stop the flow of arms across the border, to stop supporting illegally armed separatist groups. Scores of taliban militants, civilians and Afghan Soldiers are killed during heavy fighting in the Southern Province of helmand. Fifa opens Disciplinary Proceedings against luis suarez after he appears to bite an italian opponent at the world cup. Well hear how people in his native uruguay have reacted. And happy holidays. Tourists return as greece emerges from its economic crisis. Hello. We start in ukraine where fighting in the last few days threatened the fragile ceasefire. Russia says it supports the truce and the Russian Senate just voted to revoke president putins right to intervene militarily in ukraine. Meanwhile, nato leaders have been meeting in brussels to look at options to resolve the crisis. The head announced a package of plans to try to help end the violence. William hague has welcomed russias backing of the ceasefire but said the lack of action to back it up would strengthen the case for sanctions. Ukraine, president poroshenko has presented a very good plan, a very good peace plan, including dialogue in eastern ukraine. While there have been welcome words from russia about that, we have not seen yet the actions to go with that. And including tragically the shooting down of a ukrainian helicopter yesterday with the death of nine more people. So we urge russia to take the necessary action to stop the flow of arms across the border, to stop supporting illegally armed separatist groups in eastern ukraine, because in the absence of that action by russia, the case for stronger sanctions from European Union nations will, of course, become stronger. William hague there, the British Foreign secretary. Hundreds of heavily armed taliban militants, afghanistan, attacked Police Checkpoints in the Southern Province of helmand. The clashes began in sangeen on the border with pakistan and spread to three other districts. Local Officials Say more than a thousand militants are involved, hundreds of families have been displaced. And there is at least 21 afghan troops have been killed. We well, it is surprising given how much training has been given to afghan troops. One of the problems in Helmand Province is that when the american and British Forces pulled out to smaller outposts and left the security to the forces, it became a real threat, it became a threat to the point where ground reinforcements couldnt be sent, civilians have been the victims of these roadside bomb attacks, but there are areas in Helmand Province where the Afghan Government has lost ground. The Afghan Government has been in charge of the district headquarters, 20 kilometers, 15 kilometers outside of that area. The taliban has been in charge. The other important thing to note is that the taliban are taxing the drug trade, the electricity, and it is not very difficult for insurgents to hire people, 10 taliban a day fighter to fight. So there is a lot of criminal element involved into this sort of fighting and already afghan officials are saying, look, the taliban have launched this offensive to move opium in here from that area on to the iranian border. To iraq now where the Prime MinisterNuri Al Maliki criticized the call to form a National Salvation government. In his weekly speech, he says the call for National Salvation government is a coup against the constitution. And an attempt to end democracy. In a speech, the Prime Minister said the fighters are being supported from neighboring countries. Translator you know very well that iraqis today face a fierce terrorist onslaught that transcends frontiers and threatens iraqs unity, independence and stability. What makes this attack by these terrorist organizations even more serious is that it has stoppage from the province of nineveh and aimed to stretch to all parts of iraq. Its aggression is supported on all fronts by neighboring countries to iraq. Well, the first of 300 special American Forces have begun working in iraq now. Theyre advising the government on ways to repel the advance of the sunni militants. The secretary of state john kerry in the region before going to europe has been in talks with kurdish leaders in erbil. From there, we have this exclusive report. Reporter the battle to consolidate their territory to keep their autonomous region free of isis. Yet in the shadow of its ancient citadel, the kurdish capital erbil is a sanctuary for sunni fighters who dont belong to isis. And it was here we met with some who traveled to and from the front line. These are tribal fighters from embattled Anbar Province and claim baghdad will soon fall. Translator it is a matter of time, less than one month. Now theyre asking young shia to fight against us. But we will be there very soon and baghdad will fall under the revolution. Reporter but thats far from certain, even for battle hardened fighters driven by hatred of the maliki government. Also significant is the resentment they feel toward their isis allies and foreign fighters for hijacking the revolution. I want to say to america and the world that this is not an isis revolution. This is a sunni revolution. We ask the eu and america to support the sunni people. We are not terrorists. Reporter their political spokesman said their men might end up fighting isis, once victory is achieved. Translator the sunnis rejection isis. There is a vendetta between the tribes and isis because of crimes they have committed before. The battle with them is simply postponed. Reporter the iraqi army is still striking at insurgents but is demoralized and weak. Latest reports suggest the countrys Biggest Oil Refinery has fallen to the militants. Now america is pressing for a new iraqi government, more acceptable to sunnis. Without an adequate transformative decision by the leaders of iraq, anything that the United States or others or allies or friends do to try to fight back is going to be limited if not impossible. Reporter john kerry was speaking in erbil where iraqs ethnic groups coexist peacefully. It is a dream, but only that of what a peaceful iraq might look like. Iraq is a conflict catastrophe and the idea there will be one outright winner who can control the whole country is a fallacy. What we have heard, the sunni fighters suggest that growing resentment of their isis allies. So even if the insurgency does win, it could be the first phase in a much longer war. Erbil, northern iraq. The costliest strike is over after five months. Miners at the americana mine are returning to work after the three biggest firms signed a threeyear wage deal. The miners union. Still expected to take months to get the mine running at full capacity again. From the mine, we have more. Princess cristina, the oscar of the new king felipe of spain, could face trial after a spanish judge named her as a suspect in a tax fraud and Money Laundering case. The 49yearold was questioned in court back in february, but the business dealings of her husband. An appeal has been lodge ed against the decision. Lets go more from guy hedgecoe in madrid. We saw all the pomp and ceremony in the last few days. This is something that overshadowed the royal family, this case. It has very much so. It is very bad timing for the royal family, i think, just a few days after the new king took the tloeb. Wh throne. When he took the throne, it seemed promising to breathe new life into the monarchy and pull the monarchy out of the slump its been in terms of popularity or lack of popularity in recent years. The new king, felipe, himself, is relatively unpopular. He will have a big job on his hand to restore faith in the royal family with this scandal hanging over him, especially involving his sister and her brotherinlaw. Can you explain about what the charges are . Well, it all focuses on princess cristinas husband who it is alleged embezzled money from a charity which he headed several years ago and funneled that money into a company coowned by him and his wife. They allege she knew about this and was spending the money knowing it had come from questionable sources and spending it on personal items, whether it was dance classes for herself or her childrens birthday parties and so on. So these are charges that relate to Money Laundering and tax fraud and theyre very serious indeed. And is it possible she herself could face trial and she is appealing, i understand. Thats right. She is appealing. We dont know yet if that appeal will be accepted. If it is accepted, well probably see this case go on even longer than it has already. This investigation has been going on for over three years now. Really been dragging on. And has been hurting the royal family all that time. If the appeal is not accepted. She could indeed face trial. That would be the first time as a member of the Spanish Royal family, in modern times, certainly would have faced a criminal trial. That would be very serious indeed. Indeed. Of course, we were just mentioning at the beginning we have this new king felipe with his young family. You have been seen as pretty popular chance to refresh the monarchy. They will obviously and all supporters will want this case to go away, to lie low. Well, i think they will, yes. Obviously very worrying for the royal family. Interesting to see the Royal Household issued a stap ed a st today saying it accepted the independence of the judiciary, respected the decision, and i think the new king is very keen not to be seen to be taking sides or somehow favoring his sister in all of this. Because i think he knows that would be viewed very poorly by a lot of spaniards, especially with the scandals that the royal family has seen in recent years. Okay.
