The latest reports from iraq say sunni insurgents have gained control of large parts of the countrys Biggest Oil Refinery after launching a dual assault. Production was already shut down at the site. Foreign workers were told to leave for their own safety on tuesday after it was surrounded by rebel forces. Well, black smoke has been seen rising from the plant after a government helicopter hit a fuel storage tank and set it on fire. Well, the iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki is due to make a televised address shortly. Joining me now is rada awawi. On this refinery, it is crucial to Oil Production within the country. Do we know what the state of play is here, who is in control of it . There are conflicting reports about this oil refinery. Like you said, this is the Biggest Oil Refinery in the country, located 250 kilometers north of baghdad. There are some reports that the sunni militants are in full control of the site, attacking it with mortar and rifles, but security sources in baghdad have told us that they are in full control of this oil refinery. So the situation is not very clear about who is actually in control of that site, but the production as you said is completely shut down. They ordered or they asked the Foreign Workers to leave the oil refinery for their safety. A gun ship is reported to have hit one of the tanks and there are fires in the site, but we dont know so far what is the extent of the fire, but many are afraid that this might actually cause a bigger fire in the region. And more broadly, i know youre in erbil, but what is your assessment of the current risk to baghdad and also were expecting this statement from the Prime Minister. Any ideas on what might be in it . First, all the concentration of Government Forces are in and around the capital baghdad. Thats a shame. We just lost that line to erbil, unfortunately. If we can go back, we will. Fighters from the militant isis group are now reported to be only 60 kilometers from the iraqi capital. They briefly to be the city of baqubah before being pushed back. The peshmerga thought they had secured this place. But we just have been told there are 75 vehicles of isis fighters making their way here to try to cut them off. Looking at seeing how the fighting is affecting the daily lives of ordinary people, a sectarian divide between shia and sunni, is it a foregone conclusion or too late for baghdad to reach out to the sunnis. Maliki i think is under strong pressure. What is key i think is what role iran will play. It is immensely influential, welding the shia militia together who are fighting alongside security forces. If iran wants to see iraq break up into its component parts, shia dominated south, perhaps a mixed capital baghdad, sunni areas of the west and north and of course the kurds more or less going to independence trail of the north, that is happening. It is almost there. They dont have to push very much harder. If on the other hand they want iraq to pull together, to stabilize, they will have to do a lot of work at the center there to convince mr. Maliki to perhaps even get him to step down in favor of a less divisive figure. So iran has a key role to play. Americans know that. Thats why also the british are opening an embassy in tehran. This is significant with the news we are hearing today that the militants are controlling the Oil Refineries, which means that he is touching on the nerve of the issue that they are the militants are advancing which means there could be a crackdown on them by the iraqi military. Which means in another sense there would be an escalation in the coming days. However, hes focusing more on the political process that is growing in iraq and the stretching on iraq, which gives also a sort of issue and assuring messages to people, to normal people, which are very anxious and they are were watching the situation, especially in baghdad, for instance.
