The attack began on sunday evening at pakistans biggest city karachi and its biggest airport here. Gunman entered an area used for cargo and private flights and they fired automatic weapons. Several explosions were heard and after authorities said they secured the airport, more gunfire and explosions were reported. A nearby hospital struggling to cope as the injured continue to arrive. The attackers may have expected a longer siege. Suicides vests were also found. A spokesman said its a message to the Pakistan Government that we are still alive to react over the killings of innocent people in bomb attacks on their villages. The taliban is the main militant group in pakistan. The government describes this latest attack as well thought out and the attackers as well trained. Emily thomas, bbc news. Well, we can speak now to the express Tribune Newspaper in karachi. He joins us from there. Thank you for speaking with us. So you and your reporters have been covering this all night. Can you tell us what the latest situation is there now at the airport . The military has said they going to hand over the airport to the civil authority. But were not sure when flights are going to resume. Right. So it seems like they have gained control of the airport. They said that overnight but there was some confusion, wasnt there . Because it was reported there were explosions and gunfire after the point when Security Services said they had taken back control of the airport. Yes. To clarify that, it was done by their own people in the airport. The airport has been cleared around 4 30 a. M. Local time. What about the attackers . We understand ten militants and all of them wearing suicide vests. Some of which they exploded. What more do you know about those . Three of those exploded. Seven didnt. I have seen the pictures. They look to be in their early 20s, late 20s. And theyre all wearing uniforms used by the Security Services used to protect the airport. And briefly, how secure is karachis airport because it seems incredible that such heavily armed people managed to get in. Its secure. They entered from a part of the airport that isnt normally used by passengers. So i would say that the focus of the security isnt probably at that site but its pretty well guarded. Right. Okay. Thank you very much for updating us. I also want to bring you this story coming out of pakistan. Its news that suicide bombers killed at least 23 shiite pilgrims returning from iran. It happened in a hotel on the southwest of the country. Three attackers got into the hotel in the balochistan reason. There they blew themselves up. 10 people are also wounded. Its not clear if there is any link to the Karachi Airport attack. If we get information on either of those well bring it to you. Now, just three days before the opening of the world cup in brazil, the governor has warned striking subway workers they have to go back to work or theyll face the sack. The, workers voted to continue to strike for an indefinite period despite the courts decision. Katie watts reports from s sao palo. Emotions were running high on sunday afternoon. Union leaders rallied their members after a court ruling urging people to return to work. Unions want a pay rise of more than 12 . The state run Company Offered 8. 7. But despite the court threatening with a fine for 200,000 a day for every day they continue to strike it was clear what they thought as Union Members raised their i. D. Cards to vote. The feeling here is one of anger and frustration and despite the judges ruling, they both have to continue the indefinite strike. Unless the government meets their demands that could effect transports on opening match day. The congestion in the city is bad at times but the next few days saw it get even worse with huge traffic jams as people try to get to work. The accusations that the unions are using the world cup as an opportunity to extract more from the government was strongly denied. They put the world cup in the middle of our sally negotiations. We have been negotiations our sallies until may and because its carried on until june we now have the world cup. Reporter bus drivers and teachers in sao palo, they have all been pushing for higher pay. Even Police Walked off the job in the northeast of brazil. That lead to looting a few weeks ago. The truth is, the government has to give in. In the very shortterm at least it has to give in. After the world cup, the conditions for negotiation change but they arent automatically resolved because after the cup you have another important agenda, the elections. Reporter so these wage demands wont go away any time soon but the more pressing concern is thinking out the citys transport. With train lines that take fans to the stadium still remaining shut, the pressure on the government is growing. We just want to give you an update on that. My colleague katie has just filed to us from sao palo. She says there are around 300 people on the streets including riot police. Tear gas is being used to disperse people. Not stun grenades. Commuters are trying to get to work. There seems to be some bit of trouble going on there with 300 people involved and riot police and tear gas. Thats the latest from katie watson, our corr addreespondent sao paulo. The foreign minute tri . Beijing says clashes happened near the site of a chinese drilling area. They sent drivers to scattel obstacles in the water. Theyre engaged in drilg operations in its water and has accused china of ramming its vessels. I asked our correspondent in beijing whether that number 1400 was being seen as high. Absolutely. China pointed to an incident that took place on june 7th when as many as 63 vietnam vessels went into an area where they were defending this Chinese Oil Rig. So theyre using this incident not to just show its chinese ships used in the aggression but vietnam has also been quite aggressive toward china in these disputed territorial waters. That is interesting, isnt it . Up until now we have been hearing from chinas neighbors that china is being aggressive in its posture. Does this give an us indication of how bitter these neighborly disputes are becoming . Absolutely. The ties between these countries dipped to their lowest levels in years over this incident. The dragging of a Chinese Oil Rig into these territorial waters claimed by many countries. Not just china and vietnam. So yes i think last week, particularly china is trying to respond and trying to brush up its imagine in response to a video released by vietnam last week showing a large chinese ship chasing a small vietnam fishing boat. They then ramd it and the fishing boat sank. So this new response trying to show that vietnam has been quite aggressive. They have rammed chinese ships. Its trying to tip the balance of Public Opinion back into chinas favor again. Lets bring in alice with all of this. Over to you. Thank you very much. The two sides differ on how much they think is owed by the ukrainian state energy company. They say their outstanding debt was 2. 2 billion. Well, now lets look at one of the other key concerns of ordinary brazilians and thats the vast amount of money being spent on the tournament. The organizers promised long lasting benefits for the whole country. We hear that every time theres a major sporting event in various nations. So lets look back now to south africa which hosted the last world cup to see what legacy the competition left there. Heres our africa correspondent, andrew harding. Reporter so much for a world cup legacy. This community was promised their lives would be transformed when a giant football stadium was built here four years ago outside the city. Instead, the locals got corruption, murder, and overspending on a stadium thats barely used anymore. They first made promises of houses and upgrading. All of that didnt happen. They just built the stadium and disappeared. So you feel you were lied to . Yeah, we feel that they told us lies and they have betrayed us. Four years after africas first world cup, its faded and the competitions legacy is mixed. Critics say the public is still paying for these overpriced Infrastructure Projects that dont benefit ordinary south africans. The infrastructure is good but the question is why wasnt the money used properly at the world cup where we werent left with these kind of debts and were paying two or three times over again and the prices of those services are among the means of a large portion of our population that cant afford them. Reporter and yet this mass transport system has helped and the fact is south africa was lucky. Its world cup came after years of economic growth. There was cash to spare back then. But of course its not all about the money. As with the beijing olympic games, this world cup was a statement of confidence, that this whole continent was and still is changing. Our top story this hour is the news out of pakistan where Security Forces say they have now regained control of Karachi Airport after an attack by gunmen left at least 28 people dead including ten militants. Lets take you through what we know so far. The attack began on sunday evening in pakistans biggest city karachi and at pakistans biggest airport here at jinah International Airport. The gunmen entered an area used for cargo and private flights and fired automatic weapons. Several explosions were heard and after authorities said they secured the airport more gunfire and explosions were reported. Now Pakistan Taliban says it carried out the attack in revenge for air strikes in areas along the afghan border. Lets get this report now from emily thomas. Just before midnight, pakistans biggest airport becomes a battlefield. Gunmen disguised as policemen storm a terminal building mainly used for cargo. Translator the ten terror t ten terroristed entering the airport from Different Directions in groups of five. Reporter as they held grenades and fired at security guards, tres of the airport is evacuated. Smoke and flames filling the night sky. Loud sounds were coming from the direction of the airport. Then we saw small fires erupting around the hanger. The fire was so intense it looked like war had broken out. Reporter more than 25 people have been killed. Many of them airport workers and security guards. A nearby hospital struggling to cope as the injured continue to arrive. As dawn broke, the army set in to take control but then fresh violence. The sound of gunfire once more. The attackers may have intended a longer and deadlier siege. The gunmen were carrying supplies. Suicide vests were found. Security officials insisted the siege was over. They say the airport will reopen in the next few hours. Pakistans taliban says it carried out the attack in response to killing its leader in a u. S. Air strike last year. A spokesman said its a message to the Pakistan Government that we are still alive to react over the killings of people in innocent villages. A government minister describes this latest attack as well thought out and the attackers as well trained. Emily thomas, bbc news. Obviously the full details of that attack still emerging but lets speak with hasan. He is a Counter Terrorism analyst. Thank you for speaking with us. First of all, just explain to us what you think is the significant of striking karachi International Airport for the taliban. Well, theres a lot of symbolism in this. Previously weve had the taliban and other Al Qaeda Linked groups establish that they had the ability to strike. So theres a lot of symbolism. I was talking to military officials and they were saying that they were successful in not allowing the militant to carry out further damage but the actual point here is that the militants managed to break through three security quarters and managed to engage the Security Forces for about six hours. Theres a lot of symbolism in there and of course this is going to be a pr disaster as well for pakistan which was already facing problems as far as the Aviation Industry is concerned. Not just a pr disaster but obviously innocent people were killed in this attack. You talk about there being three perimeters the attackers were able to get through. The government must have known this was a very high profile target. Its the largest airport in the country. Why wasnt security better . There had been reports in the past and also a number of tv channels had highlighted some of the security flaws in this area. For example, at the airport, the airport Security Forces still using one of these scanning devices that had been used initially in iraq and it was proven that it was broke and also there was a trench that had been dug up close to one of the sites at the airport and nothing was done about it. So basically this airport has been a sitting duck. There have been intelligence reports highlighting these weaknesses but nothing was done about it. Unfortunately we have a history of such incidents taking place. Theres a lot of talk about investigations but then nothing comes out of it. So this, again, it seems is going to be one of those events again and also the fact that as it appears at the moment, they managed to mingle in with the Airport Security officials wearing uniforms and also carrying the badges. Okay. Many questions remains and the investigation just beginning into that deadly attack. Thank you very much for speaking with us from karachi. Now, it cant escape your notice that the world cup is beginning in brazil in three days time. Now the governor of sao paulo state is warning striking subway workers there that they have to return to work or theyll face the sack. Translator they put the world cup in the middle of our salary negotiations. We have been negotiating our salaries since may and because its carried on until june weve now got the world cup. Reporter the strike is the latest in a string of wage demands. Rubbish collects and bus drivers and teachers have all been pushing for higher pay as inflation pushes 6 . Reporter so these wage demands wont go away any time soon but the more pressing concern is sorting out the citys transport. With train lines that take fans to the stadium still remaining shut, the pressure on the government is growing. Katie watson, bbc news, sa sao paulo. And well take a look at that in a slightly lighter note later on in this hour. China accused vietnamese ships of ramming its vessels more than 1400 times in disputed waters in the south china sea. The clashes happened at the site of a chinese oil and gas drilling operation. It says vietnam also sent divers to scatter obstacles in the water. Vietnam says the chinese ships are engaged in Drilling Operations in its waters and its accused china of ramming its own vessels. Critics say the padlocks are a threat to the dozens of barges and boats that transports tourists and residents up and down the sane every day and theyre calling for all of the love locks to be permanantly removed. So it seems the lovers may have a fight on their hand but then the course of true love never did run smooth. Bbc news. From padlocks in paris to gridlocks in london because drivers of the citys black taxis are planning to jam the city to protest against the increasingly popular car service uber. They say the company which allows users to call a cab through their smartphones, should be regulated. What uber is doing is bringing the cab industry into the 21st century. Its an entry that hasnt really overhauled the way it thinks or operates for many, many decades. That benefit has been felt by the drivers and by the customers. We have a problem with the fact that they come into london and have gone straight and been licensed. Uber uses a system with the iphone. As soon as you turn it on you can see where your car is and literally track it real time on a map. Theres many cabs working and should be done through an office and picking up off the street is not. You hop into the cab and tell the driver what your destination is. It can change and its calculated on a gps system. The meter is not a meter because its not connected to the vehicle. A meter is a meter, you know . Its more like a gps tracking system. Were highly, highly regulated and theyre not and, you know, you just wonder why. The sign up process was simple. They explain what uber does and your documentation is all checked and youre handed an iphone and app and youre free to sign on and receive jobs. So when youre picking member of the public up off the street, you need to know that the guy picking you up is safe. You need to be registered, your whole record as a citizens is checked. Uber are obviously a multibillion pound company with the backing of amazon and google and such. Everyone has the black cabs position because they are an institution in london. We want them to be treated exactly the same as we are. Thats all we ask. Now back to the world cup finals in brazil. We want to know how many hearts will be broken over the next few weeks.
