World news. Thank you you're listening to the newsroom from the b.b.c. World Service with all of a Conway with estimated losses of up to a 1000000000 euros it could be one of the biggest robberies of all time the broke into the green as a giver birth the Green vote museum in the German city of Dresden in the early hours of this morning the thought of somehow cut the power supply and climbed in through a small window the Museum one of the oldest in Europe houses thousands of precious objects dating back from the 16th 17th and 18th centuries including a huge sapphire given by the Russians Arpita the great well and Verner his the interior minister of Saxony doesn't see any clear living art so long as there. Is not just about the material value but also the immaterial value which is inestimable for the state of Saxony as a state premier has said overnight that the whole of Saxony was stolen from and this is an attack on the cultural identity of all Saxons and the state of Saxony police and investigators are working flat out to solve this case and more about the robbery from Damien McGuinness in Berlin it appears they after breaking through this window which was caught by security cameras it appears there were 2 perpetrators who then made their way to one of the rooms containing most of the valuable jewelry they then smashed a couple of glass vitrines containing some unique collections of jewelry formally belonging to royal personages throughout Europe some very famous works of art and Jewel collections they were described as unique and irreplaceable by Museum officials just now and they then apparently within minutes were then out through that same window again because what police have said is that of 4 59 in the morning German time the 2 perpetrators set off the alarm then why 5 past 5 or so within. 56 minutes police had already reached the museum and the perpetrators had already gone so it looks like they knew what they were doing they focused on these particular jewels which were easy to grab and then get out lots of questions are still being asked and police have been talking to journalists and journalist have been firing questions at police officials museum officials about whether the security was good enough and how it's possible that these perpetrators got through the window and how they managed to even smashed the glass vitrines because the glass there apparently was security glass which should be quite difficult to smash so lots of unanswered questions which police are now trying to provide answers to because what they're doing right now is examining that room which had been broken into and do we know exactly what they took and how much it's worth is the big question so what apparently they seem to focus on was quite a few collections of jewels they appear to have left behind larger items such as valuable vases and other valuable objects on focus on these jewels as to the value that's a very difficult question that's exactly what journalists asked museum officials and museum officials because of course there is a number going around here in Germany which was 1st reported by one German newspaper saying it was a 1000000000 euros was potentially stolen or one point $1000000000.00 That figure is a very rough estimate and the museum official said actually it's impossible to place a figure on many of these items because firstly you can't sell them on the market they're just too famous and secondly beyond that actual value even if you could a say ascertain an actual market value there is also a broader value because these pieces so important German culture and particularly the regional culture of Saxony in Dresden where this museum is located there is a broader value. Of the loss to the region's identity Damian McGinnis in band n following a wipeout for pro-government candidates in Sunday's local elections in Hong Kong the territories Leader Kerry Lamb has said she will humbly listen and reflect on the opinions of voters pro-democracy councillors in the semi autonomous region took 17 of the 18 districts from the political establishment which is supported by communist mainland China it is a vote of confidence in the pro-democracy movement and a slap in the face for Beijing and Mrs Lamb he's failed attempt to provide to pass a controversial extradition Bill sparked months of protests she gave her reaction in a written statement but China's foreign minister when you spoke to reporters on a visit to Tokyo were on Channel 5 you should know she's actually don't go into the Gulf no matter what happens in Hong Kong it is a part of the Chinese territory and a special administrative region of China any attempt to destabilize Hong Kong or even to damages prosperity and stability will never succeed however these people in Hong Kong say Mrs Lamb and her government will have no choice but to introduce new democratic reforms if the government and the pro accept which one candidate still don't want to listen to as I think they will put Hong Kong in a fairy dangerous place the changes just started there's still a long way to go but at the meeting in the game again they are they are about to evolve obviously we have shown our dissatisfaction to the government through the system get when we look at the state media they don't seem willing to accept the result therefore I think the protests on the street should continue as we haven't seen a systematic change in the government our correspondent in Hong Kong Stephen McDonell says Beijing and Mrs Lamb won't be able to ignore the result apart from not what they wanted I mean I wonder how much they expected it I think they probably thought they weren't going to do that well when I say they the Celts Alyssa's supports Beijing and support Carolyn's in ministration I think they might have thought they were. Go was well this time but they couldn't give a magine the extent of this wipe out I mean they've just been electrically of almost obliterated and so it really is hard for the government of Carolan and also for Beijing to be continuing with this law and as which had been that there is this solid majority of people in home call this support them and that she doesn't approve the protest as well that just doesn't stand up anymore I mean this is just such an overwhelming result if it had been called a border law and they might have been out of pursue that law and more but now I mean how do they spin this and for the pro-democracy camp against them go wash themselves what do we do with this how can we use it because after all these are district councils way in theory you're talking about what color the bins are and do we have enough plates in the local pock Well this was turned into something of a referendum on Kerry Lamb's administration in the way this Cross says and all that and so they're trying to sort of mobilize support again for these demands for example to have direct elections or hold calls later and for the lead to sort of council to have an inquiry into the police force here and they will only be emboldened by this of a woman result I mean they have to pay in pro-democracy Council is for everyone pro establishment a council has been voted in so an awful lot of pressure now on Carol lands government also indirectly on by. And they're also going to have to think at what point that is Beijing either going to cut Carol limbless and maybe Sean the place with somebody else Stephen McDonell in Hong Kong children living near busy roads could have their lung growth stunted by up to 14 percent according to a new study researchers in Britain also say that living within 50 metres of a major road could increase the risk. Of lung cancer the museum's Richard Hamilton reports. I've come outside the b.b.c. Studios and I'm quite near Oxford Street one of London's busiest roads the research is from King's College London looked at 13 cities in Britain including London as well as Poland and they compared people in high pollution areas with the general population and they found that air pollution leads to a higher chance of heart disease heart failure strokes and bronchitis Professor Martin Williams is from King's College London one of the main findings is that there are large numbers of children like around about 8000 in London who potentially suffering impaired lung growth from exposure to traffic pollution and once the growth of lungs is impaired in children then it never really recovered throughout their lifetime and that leaves them potentially susceptible to a whole range of respiratory diseases now similar research has been done before but this is the 1st time that health impact assessments for such a wide range of health conditions and such a variety of cities have been included all in one report a coalition of 15 health and environmental organizations who are behind this research they're calling for legal levels of particulate pollution to be reduced to the World Health Organization limits by the year 2030 to put that in perspective currently the legal limit here in the u.k. Is more than double that of the w.h.o. . Which it Hamilton reporting was saying with the environment un scientists are warning that levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases have reached another record peak as talk to our environment correspondent McGrath What are they saying what does it mean what they're talking about here all over our concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere not just every year emissions the emissions like go up from people driving cars and burning Electress burning coal to make electricity so what they've seen is a rise again this you. We're about half a percent of slightly higher than the average over the last decade and they see that also for me thing in nitric oxide which are other warming gases and they say when you take all those together essentially it means there's been a big push in terms of warming over the last 30 or 40 years so about 43 percent of what they call radiator warming action of this particular gas making helping to drive up temperatures so when they talk about concentrations does that the Comdex and other gases eventually disperse otherwise isn't it just going to keep building up yeah that's that's the thing what happens with emissions of carbon dioxide is that there are some of them are soaked up by trees some of them disappear into the sea some of them disappear into the land what the scientists are looking at here a constant measure over the years is those concentrations and as I said there are men monitoring them for 30 years they go up every year and the expectation is they go continue going up the hope is then the belief is that they will reach a peak at some point to start to come down but according to the w.m.o. There's no sign of that yet no sign of a peak and no sign of a decline or a slowdown and is that because governments haven't taken enough action you know governments are promised under the parts agreement that they will deal with this but some are doing better than others some are not going so quickly the overall impact of course is that the rises continuing to go up and what does this mean for people on earth what it means people know it is according to w.m.o. That the last time we had concentrations of this level in the atmosphere was about 3 to 5000000 years ago temperatures were 2 to 3 degrees warmer than they are now and sea levels were about 20 meters taller than they are now so they're not saying we'll get those conditions as a result of the just saying when we have these high concentrations those are the conditions that can result and that could of course main huge problems for low lying city absolutely over the next 20 or 30 years because the massive problems for countries and cities all over the world which are close to the seas close to Waters affected by the rise in sea level ever expected to see under warming Thank you Matt McGrath our environment correspondent look at what else is happening in the world today here's Tom thieves have stolen 3 priceless sets of jewelry from a German museum the World Meteorological Organization says greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere have reached another record high fuelling ever more severe impact of climate change. Hoover has been refused a new license to operate in London in a move that could eventually see the campaigning banned from the city London's transport authority Transport for London said they had identified several failures that put passenger safety at risk but it will continue to operate pending an appeal I have the details from our business correspondent Theo Leggett Well tearful said that I have made a number of positive changes and improvements to its culture leadership and systems over the past year or so but they clearly didn't go far enough one of the issues it's identified was a change to a bit systems which allowed unauthorized drivers to upload their photos to other drivers account so effectively to pose as somebody else and then to pick up passengers as though they were the book driver and says this happened on at least 14000 trips and on those trips because the driver who was driving the car was not the authorized driver they were uninsured and passengers were potentially put at risk another issue was a failure which allowed dismissed or suspended drivers to create new accounts and carry on operating carry on picking up passengers even though they've been banned again compromising safety and security and c.f.l. Says it recognizes the Dubai has done things to prevent this kind of thing from happening but it's concerned the systems is too easily manipulated still so therefore it's decided for that for the moment is not a fit and proper operator and therefore will not be granted a new license but it can continue to operate pending an appeal so we'll passengers notice any difference for the moment no one has $21.00 days in which to lodge an appeal it said it will do it said incidentally that the decision by t f l is extraordinary and wrong and then it can continue operating as well throughout the appeals process which would be heard by a magistrate so it would be a fairly lengthy process and this has happened before tearful denied uber a license back in September 2017 the company appealed and ultimately it was awarded a. Short term 15 month license which came to an end it was extended for another couple of months and that brings us to today so it's not likely to lose its ability to offer services in London in the short term but if that were to happen in the end you have to remember that Hoover accounts for about 80 percent of right hailing lifts in London so in the immediate aftermath of any decision like that its absence would be felt and felt quite keenly but let's not forget either that there are other operators waiting in the wings waiting to take over if they were does find it can't operate like it last month Singapore passed a new law against fake news might seem a responsible precaution given the rise in dissin from Asian and social media but human rights groups said the legislation could be used to muzzle dissent and free speech in Singapore now for the 1st time it's been used against an opposition party member Brad Boyer as I heard from Christmas one here in Singapore he wrote a Facebook post on November the 13th and in the rather extensive post he asked questions about the performance of some of Singapore's state investment funds and pointed out that they haven't done all that well in and questioned their independence from the Singapore government these were among some of the things that he had said in and Brad Boyer is not a politician he is a member of the opposition party and in fact is a naturalized citizen he was born in the u.k. Having come to Singapore when he was 17 years old and when I spoke to him earlier today he said that he sent acknowledge that he made statements that could be construed as political but he made them in a personal capacity and in an effort to raise concerns as a member of the public here but that's not how the Singapore government site so they could be construed as political but not necessarily fake news according to him well he didn't go so far as to say that I think you know since he's had to issue the correction on his Facebook post which he did subsequently at. Being asked he is toeing a fine line here I think there is an acknowledgment on his part that the government has the right to issue this correction and he said to me that when he was asked to do so that's exactly what he's done and if you look at his Facebook post you can see very boldly the correction that's put at the very top of his original post there is a link that redirects you to a Singapore Government fact checking website where the government site says that some of the statements Mr Boyers claims have made are misleading and false and then goes on to detail why they're false and puts forward the government's position on some of the things he said now the case hasn't really gotten to that much attention here in Singapore but it is the 1st time that it has been used and some right group rights groups had pointed out when the law was 1st passed that it could be used to stifle freedom of expression and alternative opinions and positions of thought in Singapore where these things are often self-centered because of very strict laws here on what you can and cannot say. In Singapore and now as promised a little earlier a quick look at some of the other stories from around the world with Tom people living in the town of Benny in the Democratic Republic of Congo have set fire to the town hall following another militant attack overnight Benny's residents have been protesting over the failure of the authorities and the u.n. Mission but new Sco to protect civilians 8 people are reported to have died in the attack by the Allies Democratic Forces militia dozens have been killed in the area since the Congolese army launched an operation against the a.d.f. At the beginning of the month the Saudi Arabian football team has arrived in Qatar for the Arabian Gulf Cup in what's been seen as a potential thawing of the long running diplomatic dispute between the 2 countries the u.a.e. National team has also flown to Cata where the Saudis it has imposed a land sea and air blockade of cattle are over its alleged support for jihadists and its closeness to Iran the Saudi Saudi team is reported to have flown directly to cats are seen as another sign of potential easing of the blockade. Britain's biggest cinema chain Sydney world has said it won't stop showing the film Blue story despite a brawl involving machetes outside one screening in Birmingham 2 other groups view and showcase have decided not to show the film which is about gangs in south London Odeon says it has put in place new security arrangements following the end of the 30 year regime of Omar al Bashir. One of the most important changes has been to freedom of expression after decades of Islamist dictatorship and social repression people finding their voices during the uprising come since were held every night at the protest site now community run come sort of started in the capital Khartoum. James Copnall reports from an outdoor social club called the Sudanese piece of music festival. My name is a comedy and I'm one of the executive directors of Sudanese displays and that's Is it easier to hold a festival like this now the revolution is happening absolutely the revolution sparks something in people that had been oppressed for a really long time and the ability to express yourself connecting with people is really a spiritual revolution that is continuing now even in this transition period and it wouldn't have been without you know the sacrifices that came through revolution. This is a time of hope in Sudan but it's also quite a stretch out because it in a tree still has some parts in political life even the many people just want a civilian government that do you agree that maybe you're operating in a bubble of this moment in time. It is a fragile state there's an air of caution around all of it and so I wouldn't say it's a bubble there's a saying that comes from poetry and I mean which means that will build it together and that's the sense that everyone. During and after the revolution so we want to give We want to share in the new Sudan in any way that we can. Which side of South Korea social club president stays flashing lights haha who runs a radio station here is doing a house music sack now but we went already said this is going to be depressed not many people here want to have the kind of house people paid to be like here if the people jumping up and down to making a deal with a degree of an easement but I was going down the. Street. Names up the line and I'm already artist in the city and that they get everywhere will be crowded test it out so the minute you build it it was a reggae area record in a way where reggae music was playing every night I was there that night and I was doing it every single day so your group is a group born from the revolution that run from the revolution. A I mean music is a good weapon I guess it's not just about revolution it's about building a soul has what change in most all this about racism it's about poverty so all police brutality it's all it's about being against the military. Being over us and the last 30 years so it's just a weapon that we got to use and you know share it and think it's a good life and it's a very good laugh and. To. World news. Hello I'm Ed Butler and welcome to business daily from the b.b.c. Today we're hearing from Moldova in Eastern Europe and the mystery of one of the world's biggest unpaid gas bills Transnistria consumes gas but they don't pay and the we accumulate huge amount of that's $7500000000.00 It's almost the g.d.p. Of all countries free power for a region that's using it to mine millions of dollars worth of Bitcoin all sanctioned Russian officials organizing a crypto currency through the idea of a financial system without having to go through the traditional banking system highly controlled by the u.s. That makes crits currents is really really interesting to say that Russian That's all to come in business daily from the b.b.c. . We now need somebody else to put the special sense that we go Victor is open the door for us. And this is where the magic happens. That was made last month in Tbilisi in the former Soviet republic of Georgia visiting its largest bitcoin mining facility a multi $1000000.00 factory run by a firm called Bit fury the machines there run but will drink the complex algorithms with enough computing power they are producing vast amounts of bitcoins each of which is worth about $9000.00 on the current global market that is the sound of money being made. Huge machines may look like. Isolation tanks it's like Northcliffe grid so right so this is the water is that water is just a show that registers on the water which keeps him preach up this email that well I like it both months you know looking down. Release glass windows into a huge metal tank we make with something around inside many heads the mites like us that are running through coming down because keeping this place cool is one of the most difficult expensive and challenging tasks of the entire process. Well but mining like this is generating millions of dollars these days and as we showed on business daily earlier this month Georgia is now thought to be the world's 3rd largest bit mining nation after China and Venezuela but other territories are starting to get in on the act and for interesting reasons it seems for example the breakaway territory of Abkhazia it's nominally a part of Georgia but is now self-governing with support from Moscow David really from the Georgian environmental pressure group green alternatives told me how it has it was now developing its own bit mining industry consumption significantly has been increasing Upazila this is a black hole for Georgia we haven't had any control what's going on there and in recent years their consumption increased significantly in this year it was increasing by over 20 percent which is huge because we don't understand what's going on there and Georgia was even importing electricity from Russia to supply the Christie for free to apply and then from a president where the sort of Christie goes at least for society it's not known what and they switch it off. That's a question to the decision because the city is interposed ticklish I guess but we hear a problem is a much deeper than just switching of a plaza but here problem that we have even in Georgian territory by which he means the consumption of power for crypto currencies appears now to be out of control across the entire region once you have access to lots of cheap power you see it is literally a license to print money one recent estimate suggested that currency mining globally was more energy than the entire nation of Austria just think about that and its environmental implications divided former Soviet republics have now it seems become natural prey to this power guzzling boom like Georgia Moldova has also long been split along ethnic lines between its main territory and the breakaway Russian speaking region called trends nice Tria surge you topple at is a form of banking official and an anti corruption activist in that country back in 1992 a part of our country was Orkut parred by the Russian army and you became a separatist region just like Donbass in Ukraine his name Transnistria and a through we'd go the pipelines through which from supplies gas to Moldovan to Balkan countries also in Transnistria he's located one of the biggest power plants in Europe modeled gress and they supply about 80 percent of the energy consumption in Moldova So we rely on Transnistria for energy supply and we depend on them concerning the gas supply that you are the Moldova side of the equation are paying for the gas that goes into that power station so during the last 27 years our supplier Moldova has the science the. Contracts with Gus prong So basically Transnistria consumes gas but they don't pay and we accumulate huge amount of that's now that that's the guys that succeed $7500000000.00 and it's almost the g.d.p. Of our country it sounds almost insane surge you're saying that basically you are buying gas you're giving it effectively for free to this breakaway region the breakaway regions burning the gas and selling you energy back and you're paying them for that how come no one is being charged for all of this power. The problem is that you cannot address to a transmitter in court to force your asshole friends guards to pay the gas so it's useless and we depend very much on Gas Prom on gas supplies and Gus Plum uses these and who for small dogs on the Florida Keys to accept this condition of supplying gas for free to Transnistria So it's the Russian state energy supplier who is forcing this arrangement to continue yes it is a provision in the contract between Moldova Garzon gas prong So trans mystery is getting vast amounts of free energy and Moldova's got a massive unfair now unpaid gas bill and in the last year Transnistria as leader has called on the owners of the power station to ramp up its output as part of a concerted effort to increase the production of digital currency millions of dollars worth of the stumbling over. To get. Regular citizens are among those cashing in that's the voice of room analyst Cinco He's a 25 year old musician turned her cryptocurrency minor speaking there in a noisy cafe in the trends and history in capital terrace ball he got involved in currency mining back in 2017 just as the family with Bitcoin was surging. It was kind of a blind deal I didn't have any knowledge but I kind of just bought everything and didn't know what I was doing but it kept growing what's really good about it is the interest in history or you can get good profits and all you need is internet lots of people have been leaving Transnistria But this allows you to stay here and make some money for you with your eyes because they are mostly though those profiting and not regular citizens like Roman but bigger players with links to Moscow at least that's according to the anti corruption activists urge you top a lot who told me about the most visible individual amongst them all you got cherry craze the youngest son of the Russian prosecutor general you not told what 2017 he was named by the Russian organization deal of i.r.c. We British Virgin Islands Yes and who's in charge of go web as far as we can at the company was from February 2018 conducted by a person named Nick you the morals of humanish and in an interview for a child of a good. It's Russian media outlet that he previously worked as a policeman for the ministry of Russia Russian minister of interior and also he mentioned that he worked for the Russian Railways and suddenly this person becomes a crypto current c. Investor I think it's my personal belief I think he's a nominee person by which you main you don't think he's necessarily the man truly in charge of what's going on because he didn't have any activities linked with cryptocurrency production previously from a policeman to turn right away into a cryptic or unseen Vester and to pay millions of dollars for equipment quite strange for me right so we don't know you're saying the key players in charge your contention however is that Moscow is always in charge of what happens in France and history I mean is that a fair assessment Well let's figure out the only company who supplies gas in Milan Transnistria he's got a problem they don't get paid and they accumulate that's we shall never be paid so it means losses for gospel. 1st thing 2nd thing the power plant that produces electricity by burning gas it is owned by another Russian enterprise so obviously you have to have the acceptance of those 2 huge state controlled enterprises to burn the gas to convert it into electricity for mining crip the current authorities of Transnistria are fully obeying the Kremlin the regime because without is the gas subsidy of a our economy of this breakaway region will not survive so obviously they fall in a bay to the Kremlin authorities and no reasonable investor will come to invest in France needs 3 are in the region occupied by Russian army Sergio top of that speaking to me from the mold of an capital Chisinau in Eastern Europe we have asked go web and Nikita models off for comment on all of this neither of them have responded to our inquiries Transnistria an app has here are not the only regions with booming cryptocurrency mining industries reports suggest that the dumbass the Russian backed separatist region of eastern Ukraine is also exploiting its vast coal supplies legally the property of Ukraine to mint new bitcoin there as well a patent does seem to be emerging doesn't it Lucinda Smith is a British freelance journalist who's investigated this bit mining phenomenon for the Us magazine Wired she told me that the boom isn't just about cashing in on cheap power it's also linked to the growing efforts of some governments to sidestep Western sanctions obviously Russia especially since 2014 has been hit with round after round of sanctions particularly relating. An exception of Crimea from Ukraine into its 40 various actions that Vladimir Putin has taken in eastern Ukraine the allegations that Russia has meddled in with its. So in these circumstances the idea of a financial system way you can make payments and facilitate trade with other countries without having to go through the traditional banking system which is highly controlled by the us because it's so dependent on the dollar that makes crypt occurrences and other alternative financial payment systems really really interesting for states that Russia is there evidence that senior members of the Putin administration have financial links with this crypto currency boom we're seeing in these regions you've looked at seriously there's evidence that Putin is interested I mean publicly he's kind of flip flopped on crypt occurrences the Russian Duma has only just passed its own legislation outlining the regulations for Russian cryptocurrency industry in Russia itself. But for example in Crimea which was annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014 there have been several forums where representatives from the Kremlin have spoken about their attempts to set up a cryptic currency Harb in Crimea a technical university to look into this setting up a school where the sanctions States can come and learn how to use crypt occurrences so if not open acknowledged links there are certainly tentacles reaching out from the Kremlin is how it would put it and it would make sense as a tool in your armory if you are wishing to mobilize campaigns particularly international campaigns without direct access to the dollar based banks that are normally dominating global finance Absolutely and I think that you know this is one thing that Putin and other leaders who are feeling the effects of sanctions are actually not shy about saying if we look for example or recent dialogue between Putin and Turkey's president one who also increasingly is finding himself on the receiving end of u.s. Sanctions they're incredibly interested in how they can start doing their bilateral trade without using the dollar so they've talked about Turkey joining a payment system called the Mir which is a Russian payment system which is an alternative to the Swifts network and also interestingly just this month President hurdle and signed his own decree saying that the Turkish Central Bank is also going to start looking into developing a national crypto currency you know it's no coincidence that this is happening now and I think Donald Trump in particular is incredibly reliant on sanctions you know if you follow the Treasury's sanctions order. At least every week sometimes several times a week they're issuing new orders against entities and individuals in Iran in Russia in Venezuela in Turkey in Cuba in all these countries where the u.s. Wants to either punish bad behavior or change behavior you know kind of rein in Rogue leads and rogue states but the more it does this the more these countries are going to start searching for ways to get around those sanctions there's no sign that they're changing their behaviors those this all they're doing is looking for ways to avoid it and to get around it so I think and you know the Treasury so has to start taking notice of this it's not only rogue states also groups like Hamas Palestinian militia lists as a terrorist group by many many countries around the world has also started looking into how it can gather funding using block chain and also the hackers who hacked the Democrat Party is email servers before the 26000 elections were paid using because when that was mined in Romania it seems by people who are now interested in mining in Transnistria so cryptic urns is can be used for all sorts of ends which are really against Western security interests the freelance journalist Lucinda Smith who research much of the story for Wired magazine Well that's it for this program I hope you enjoyed it we will be back same time tomorrow to join us there. You're listening to the b.b.c. World Service now witness history with me Rebecca b. And today we revisit the story of 2 brilliant scientists each experts in their different fields who ended up speaking with one voice literally this is the story of Dennis Klatt the speech synthesis pioneer who gave his voice to the British astrophysicist Stephen Hawking I should explain that I communicate with him a computer the next weeks in the search for this allows me to select words from lists on the screen by pressing a switch and might end. Up with a sentence I can send get the sleeps in the secure in his later years Professor Stephen Hawking's voice became almost as famous as his groundbreaking fairies on quantum physics and black holes diagnosed with motor neuron disease as a student in his twenty's Hawking was advised that he probably only had a couple of years to live defying the odds he lived into his seventy's but an emergency truckie up to me in 1985 meant he totally lost the ability to speak and that's when the work of american dentist plant came in the 1st time I really understood that Stephen Hawking was going to be using this class speech synthesizer as when I heard him talk I thought wow I'm watching Stephen Hawking and outcomes Dennis is voice it was kind of startling This is Joseph to Kell he was a colleague of Dennis collapse when they were both research scientists in the seventy's and eighty's at Massachusetts Institute of Technology Joe's office was just down the corridor from Dennis's he was a very modest and soft spoken extremely smart and amazingly hardworking he could function in the middle of a hurricane and he was very focused and the works. What he did was exceptionally good Dennis class was an expert in computerized speech synthesis specifically generating lifelike human speech from text fed into a computer to create the sounds Dennis recorded hours of his own voice recording for the American speech and searing Association there are over 1000000 people in the United States who are unable to speak for one reason or another I can hear him typing away on his computer and synthetic speech coming out of his office for him the most convenient sound was out of his own voice so the speech synthesis that was produced by this program sounded like us at the time the quality of it was about as good as you could get and it was really convincing and we were all used to synthetic speech coming out of our phones and all kinds of places around us these days but in those days it was very rudimentary and compared to the other schemes that were being developed in other places his clearly sounded the best. Dr Klatt named his synthesized voice perfect pole I am perfect the standard male voice he also developed the female version I am beautiful Petit the standard female voice some people think I sound a bit like a man. And a child my name is and I am about it here still with the character of that last voice was based on his daughter Dr Laura fine he spoke to the b.b.c. In 2013 I was a lab rat as a child I spent a lot of time at mit my father had a candy drawer and he took snippets of my voice and that helped to develop the child's voice so the most important qualities of a speech synthesis system are really the naturalness in the intelligibility and he was very much interested in making those a high quality of the scientists and technicians worked with Dennis claps voice synthesizer. To create a mobile computer that could be stored in Professor Hawking's wheelchair Initially he was able to operate a hand device to select words and phrases that perfect poll would then speak it was a laborious process but it enabled Hawking to communicate to lecture and even to write world wide bestselling books about well the theory of everything we think of the universe started out a finite but very small size and expanded rapidly Did you ever think you'd hit Dennis Platt speaking about the edges of the universe and. There was something comes across to that is indelibly associated with a particular person but it's not coming from that person it was a very unusual experience every time my original lead one to write a book or near Port bookstore but. Maybe the publisher should have been a good woman rather than really good Hawking he is a remarkable story how he contributed and how he continued to be able to do that while past the time that he shouldn't have been alive and I wonder if being able to communicate by speech and this is purely speculation on my part but might have added to his longevity as a productive person but there is a tragic twist to this tale in the ne eighties dentist began receiving treatment for thyroid cancer he'd been told it was terminal and as it progressed he began to lose his own voice the treatment for the cancer involved radiation that's what gradually caused his vocal full range all tissues to stop functioning properly his speech became more and more difficult but at the same time the synthetic speech coming out of his office didn't change naturally so it was ironic you know it's. A unique kind of tragedy actually that this man who focused so much reproducing this natural process lost it in himself docked to collapse daughter says he knew he wouldn't survive the illness my father unfortunately passed away at age 50 way too young but he and he knew that he had a terminal illness really when I was quite young but he was always so optimistic I remember when he no longer had the strength to come into the office that I would bring things to his house so he could keep working he had a computer at home I could tell that it was important for him to keep focusing on the aspect of his life that were so important to him Denis Klatt died in 1988 the same year that Stephen Hawking published his epic book a brief history of time as technology evolved Professor Hawking was offered an upgrade on his perfect pole voice perhaps even with an English accent he refused it and stuck with perfect pole for the rest of his life in 2013 the b.b.c. Brought together the daughters of both men Laura and Lucy Kate Laura can you can you hear me I can hear you can you hear me yes I've got you. Know I have to tell you something perfect pool sounds just like my dad I mean I think that's amazing is perfect based on your father's voice Yes which therefore means that my father is she speaking with your father's voice it's amazing he would be so so thrilled I think one of the things that strikes me about your father is his humanity in that he managed to do something that's had a very profound impact on people's day to day lives it's been such an amazing experience for me to talk to you about how your father's life has been transformed by my father's research and I had never really thought before that my father's voice lives on. Stephen Hawking died in 2018 more than 50 years after he was given 2 years to live and about 30 years after he got his new voice his ability to communicate complex theories to the public is seen as one of his greatest contributions to science dentist plats work played a pioneering base for voice synthesis helping fountains of people around the world the mere fact of having to organize my thoughts so that I can explain them to. Show me the way forward to me that voice belong to Donna's I understood that had been adopted by hawking a very successful and I thought that was fantastic but I always heard though not speaking it was very strange it never was the case that when I heard Hawking speaking that I didn't think of done. Dr Joseph he was speaking to me Rebecca Casby for this edition of witness history this is the b.b.c.
