The Syrian regime and myself forget that they're backed by Russia and Iran so it complicates the battlefield but from the Kurdish point of view it will offer them I think Green a security or knowledge of the autopsy package commander says that compromising with the Syrian government has been very painful indeed. News. Hello this is o.o.s. Broadcasting live from the middle of the newsroom here in London I'm the area we will continue to track the big global story of the Syrian army joining the Kurdish forces in combating the Turkish military offensive in Syria but on the show we also tried to spot the conversations on social media and we saw that the top global Twitter trend today has been Sally she's a Korean pop star and people have been sharing their shock over her sudden death she was only 25 we'll talk about Sally and her work a little later in the program and we will move on to Turkey and Syria but let me also tell you that we are going to be hearing from Basile in this hour and there's been a development that protests have taken place after 9 politicians and activists was sentenced to terms between 9 and 13 years in jail for their role in a failed Catalan independence bid in 2017 b.b.c. News Yarrow proport a gallon Lee has just tweeted smoke bombs appear to have been deployed at Barcelona El Pratt airport in dealing with PAOs and of Catalan separatist protesters gathering that we will go to Catalonia and get the latest in a few minutes from now but let's begin with Turkey's military operation against Kurdish fighters in northern Syria a lot has happened since we spoke about it on Friday and my colleagues from different language services looking at different regions in the Middle East have joined me here at the desk and we'll get into the nitty gritty to the to the really to the bottom of all the developments that have taken place with them in just a moment but before that we wanted to hear the stories of people who have been displaced along the Turkish Syrian border I spoke to one man his name is moved out he's a Kurd and was displaced from Africa in the last year and has recently had to move again he told us about his journey. On the other situations got that. Was where you. Are right all of a sudden this was fading away and well what after that said. The blog meant all over the situation here I don't know if this agreement called for a future for us because. We lost our trust our orders our governments or it was a painful compromises but it's better than to face a genocide actually because we have been led out for many times you know. That was Moorabbin we'll hear the full conversation later in the program but let me introduce you to guess you've come and sat down with me at the u.s. Desk Olga if she knows from b.b.c. Russian on or interim from b.b.c. Turkish and Mohamed Yahia from b.b.c. Arabic Thank you all for coming here and as we heard in the news bulletin Syrian government forces are now moving into positions close to the border following that deal Syria struck with the Guardian that the deal is what. It was referring to whose voice we just heard and we wanted to understand the significance of this deal and make sense of the involvement of all the powers in the conflict so moment if you can explain 1st what is the deal exactly and why is it painful for the Kurds were added to come we were just listening to. The events of the past we have been really does Ling and surprising to even the closest observers of what is going on the latest deal that we're talking about is the deal between Syria's Kurds and the Assad government that they will give up their control of areas that were previously under control of Gillick control in order to get the protection from the Assad military against the Turkish solved. Now to understand this we need to go back a little bit back in time so in 2014 when i.r.s. Had their big you know sweep through Syria and they took they had it as their view of the fact the capital and then after that the Americans allied themselves with the Syrian Kurds the armed the s.d.f. The back them up and it was a very strong battle to regain the territories that Ayers took from them in 2017 Finally I assume were defeated and the held no longer territory as the did but then the problem started between Turkey and the us Turkey has been calling for a long time since 2017 after the battle of Rocca on the Americans to deny their support to the Kurds and to take away the arms that they have they say that the Kurds are a security threat to them they are allied with the p.k. K. Which Turkey considers a terrorist group. The Kurds deny this but this is a different story and then last year we heard as we heard when the story about the refugees who were it are free in Turkey and 3rd Freeman and took control of it and last week after a phone call between President Trump and Erdogan the Americans 1st said they would withdraw from the border area which gave a green light for Turkey to start their operation and then yesterday the Americans said that they are withdrawing all of their 1000 troops from northeast Syria and then we've started to see a very rapid movement on the ground of the the Syrian military trying to get into places in they have presence now in commish the in. Other areas and the Turkish military is still going on with their operation so it still hasn't stopped allies but we know for fact that there is this deal now. And we have to wait and see what will happen next and this deal has been brokered by Russia and Russia has had a huge involvement in the region yes exactly as far as we know those negotiations even took part at Russian military bases in Lattakia just to the defacto. Russian Russian base Russians in in Syria and for sure this was a very important moment. This was the chance to again the rest of the frame reinforce their power in the region to again show how how how important they are and what the group broke Are they off from point of view of Mosco and of course their message remains the same you know for many many years they keep telling that listen those who have. Break a deal with the United States it's not that safe if you have deal with us we're never betray our allies that that's the message from Moscow and of course they they couldn't lose these opportunity to reinforce this message again not only to could see for them is just another example but for anyone who is who is sort of now in the process of trying to transition or thinking about whether to do to break a deal with Moscow they want to show that they are strong strong allies and they are ready to support those who they support and for them of course is just it's just pretty clear from Moscow it's not a chance to you know get into areas which were controlled by the United States to see how they prepared the Kurds to sort of to look after the territory also for them it's very important too to find out what's going to happen with those ISIS militants which were held in the camps which were controlled by the Kurds so for for Russia it's a part of big geopolitics game for them it's real politik sort of in terms specially Now of course the u.s. Is being seen as an ally who gave up on cards it's an opportunity for Russia to talk about what it can do for the region but I was also curious. About how this impacts Russia's relationship that's a tricky one exactly because before that before the brokering deal would travel with Kurds they were managing to keep a sort of both sides on the one hand they were supporting us out on the other hide on the other hand they were helping Turkey and they even managed to sell them. A crop protection system as 400 which was amazing bearing in mind that Turkey is NATO member so they have so they're now have some NATO. Fight fighter jets NATO own ground troops and. And anti aircraft missiles which were. Provided for them by Mosco who is. A position to NATO so it's very hard though but it's of the 1st time when Moscow manages to you know to to keep this in the game because for example 2015 they shut down Russian fighter jets Russian ambassador in Turkey was killed and there was some minor some minus signs but most of that they are really really angry about it but on the other hand the relations between Turkey been on Qur'an most were. Rebuilt pretty quickly after those events so I think you know this time again they're they're designed to oppose Washington both in and then most is stronger than the differences between the owner you know from the b.b.c. Takesh the obvious what's the view from Turkey. After this agreement struck by the . Assad government there haven't been any clear reaction from Turkey that would signal a policy change yet. Today President arguing said it looks like there won't be a problem in Co bunny thanks to Russia of positive approach and in membership we are implementing our plan as we have they declared before. From the states. We can understand that their plan is to go along with the operation until they come face to face with the Syrian government forces because after that point it will be really hard or impossible for Turkey to continue the operation without attacking Syrian soldiers which would have very big consequences but we getting reports that the Syrian forces are moving to the border so that's a very real eventuality Yes At the same time Turkish troops are trying to move west fast as they can in Syria as well so it looks like whoever goes there 1st will be the one that controls and that mamma dies began the conversation by asking you that if I if this is it's being called a painful decision for the cuts so could you remind our listeners this deal that is actually meant to help the Kurdish forces by the Syrian army to fight the Turkish Why is it a painful decision for the us because the Kurds have been relying on the backing of the Americans since the allied with them in 2014 and after the defeat was defeated. And what happened last week when Trump signaled a green light for the Turks to to start this operation the Kurds were saying this is a stab in the back and they felt that their biggest ally has deserted them they say we had no option this was our only option to go to to work to us and asked for for his protection now there's 2 big risks that we need to watch out for 1st is the risk of when when the the the the Turkish and their forces and their allies start spreading and when Assad and his forces that are spreading could there be a clash between the 2 sides both the Turks and the Russians are saying that this is not they will not allow. This to happen the 2nd risk is the resurgence of us especially with the reports that hundreds of The Prisoner families and some of the fighters have managed to escape in recent days as a result of the the ongoing military operations So these are the tourist Well thank you so much Mohammad the idea from b.b.c. Arabic honorarium from b.b.c. If she know from b.b.c. Russian for bringing us a complete 360 degree view of the Turkey Syria conflict. This is all s. On the b.b.c. With real life from the b.b.c. The. Now the top global Twitter trend for much of today has been subtly popstar subtle he was found dead at her home in South Korea she was only 25 Sally is a former member of one of the Pops biggest bands f. X. That's one of their biggest hits electric shock. Just. Like. You might have heard of electric shock which reached number one in Korea and number 3 in the United States in 2012 and to find out more about Sally I spoke to name came a journalist in sealed. Off of a girl called. Well 2015 and after that she was. In t.v. Dramas and fair and. Well basically. Me Well no. I would say that if you're interested in case you would have seen or heard. But she was a good singer so. Some people truly 2nd she was in charge of casual So the. Like she never let that. At least not to not on social media she was small. Many people. Also austerely our social media for being too feisty especially by South Korean standards and could that be linked in any way to her death. Well one never knows I mean we have to remember. So. We've got the highest. Rates amongst all countries for the past 30 years and that basically means that on average 36. Also in. Every 40 minutes so this is a country where I had a big. Role committing serious site and you know you cannot really know why somebody chooses to do that but we have reports coming out that she was suffering from severe depression her manager got really worried after she was not contactable for just under 24 hours and the manager decided to actually go to her place and break down the door to try and see what was going on so we know that those close. Well aware of her state and she was supposed to record a t.v. Show today but she wasn't context. She didn't leave a note but South Korean police just released the fact that they found her diary and they're saying that the last pages in the diary sure a seem to suggest that she was having a quite a lot of issues and so they decided not to release the contents of the diary but one cannot help but think that x. Maybe depression was part of the reason why she chose to end a life this way as I said she was a very active person on social media Another thing is that she would often just pictures of us so wary. Without a bra This meant that in a country where women who do not wear bras are very much frightened. And when it will hatch a switch conceal one's nipples for women and men so incredibly well this meant that they were also often that's how it's a social media attacks and she was often made out to be a figure of ridicule by Korean top militants but how would she be remembered you know what is her legacy will she be remembered as a rebel then well she was only $25.00 so she was on the all round entertainer she was an act as well as a singer and a talented down so and also the fact that she wasn't scared of what people saw which she tried to live her life and she waved and not caring and not caring too much about what other people thought but one thing that we have to remember is this is really bad news for company all powerful entertainment company in South Korea called s.m. Sully is the 2nd artist belonging to that company committed suicide after another k. Pop artist a male Lunde. Jolyon a shiny a very popular boy great he also committed suicide as well so. At the moment tonight in South Korea maybe they need to think about what they may be doing wrong why. Choosing to end their lives in this way. Nemo came a journalist in Seoul. And let's talk about Catalonia next the semi autonomous region in Northeast been now its autonomy has been suspended for 7 months following the region's field attempt to break away and today after Catalonia has 9 separatist leaders were given jail sentences thousands of people went to the streets to protest our correspondent Jamie ungrammatical joins us from Barcelona Damien good to have you on the program 1st tell us about the sentences. Well these were senior figures from the cattle and independence movement political figures cultural figures who had been at the head of that bid for independence for the region it was 2 years ago when the local administration in Catalonia held the referendum it was an authorised that in independence referendum they used that to try to then have a mandate to declare independence illegally the Spanish government moved in quashed that bid very quickly and arrested the leaders and today 2 years later we've had the verdicts in their trial of the Supremes court so knowing of the 12 sentenced not given the most extreme punishment 25 years they were facing could charge is a rebellion those were dismissed by the court but they would have been sentenced to between 9 and 13 years for sedition and that's what's brought protesters out onto the streets today in Catalonia and it seems that you were probably at the protest at what had they been saying. Yes Well I'm actually just near the main airport in Barcelona which this morning became the focus the protests and sent messages out on social media calling on people to converge on the airport the city itself a broad standstill to traffic in many bits of the city blocking junctions and I'm now what 4 kilometers from the airport they blocked all the access roads there are hundreds of protesters. Marching down the road to the airport we know at the airport ahead of testers many hundreds are in a sort of standoff with riot police there what they've been saying is that they believe that this trial was political that their leaders are political prisoners now and that they have been criminalized for criminalise for in effect trying to give expression to the will of the people of Catalonia the government of course says that this was an illegal illegitimate act and that these are simply not people being. Being punished for speech or for their ideas and thoughts but for their illegal actions in holding a referendum spending public money on it and trying to break apart the unity of space but with but with so many leaders now with such harsh sentences what does it mean for the movement. Well the movement in today I mean continues of course the. Leader of the movement at the time he actually fled to avoid trial and is in the. He's now living in Belgium but a new arrest warrant has been issued for him today Carlos puts them on. He's called it sounds great just I think the hope is independent stream of hope is that they can galvanize people off the back of the senses and what we're seeing today is this sort of outpouring bring about anger at the length of the sentences but equally that the prime minister Pedro Sanchez what he has said is that the this was simply the law being followed through and now is the time he said for this illegal act people to put this behind them and really enter a process of dialogue I think will be interesting as we have national elections coming up in a few weeks and it may well be that things can be the government would hope that people would express their views right in those elections absolutely into the streets now thank you Damien traumatic years from Barcelona and we've got Martin patients joining us from just o.t.c. On the program to bring us a sense of the main stories and the big conversations taking place around the world a lot of the journalists around me have been following developments in the Turkey Syria crisis and we will bring you the latest on that from the border in just a moment but he also spotted that one of the most such things on Google in the last 24 hour was is about the asteroid and Black Hole on fortnight lots of conversation about the so-called And we'll talk about it in the next 10 minutes on Oh yes but 1st let's go so what do Tookie our correspondent Martin patients is joining me from there and they've been lots of twists and turns in the story over the weekend now the cd an army is supporting the Kodesh forces in dealing with the Took offensive mountain where are you now and what's happening around you. Well you're very close on the Turkish Syrian border just across from the Syrian side of raw in the last rites a long story and that's been a target of these Turkish offensive it in the past couple hours we've seen 2 or 3 years strikes as well as shallowing So the Turkish offensive continues I mean what's been extraordinary in the last 24 hours is that a dream it reached by the Kurds and the Syrian government a week ago the Kurdish fighters were big fired by America but when America decided to logs Turkey invades Eads the Kurds were life looking for a pretext and they reached an agreement with the Syrian government it was a bitter cold promote according to Kurdish commander that he said they nor their choice and then almost immediately reported Syrian government forces were herded northwards to wards the border but what we have to remember is the Syrian army has a whole load by years of fighting. And the reason a war of propaganda going on at the moment in there is credibly difficult to get information out of Syria because the situation is simply so chaotic and do we have any sense of where those Syrian government forces have reached Well according to Syrian government reports as well as videos on the ground they've moved into 2 targets in the north east of the country not I think significantly that's no where there's Turkish military operation he's taking place because the big danger at the moment is potentially you could have a standoff between Syrian government forces allies will forget thereby by Russia and Iran and then a mother side protractors forces and that's what makes the Syria conflict so dangerous you have so many countries involved and a miscalculation for many Saudis could potentially trigger something far worse and invade does this leave the Kurdish militia. The Kurds are now very hard place I mean the rats are allowing these 2 key Syrian SOBs they were originally out of Arab majority tires it looks like the Kurds alone most certainly lose control of them. They will be pushed they will still not clear what the law of their agreement is with the Syrian government I mean for the past 445 well actually ever since the Syrian uprising began 8 years ago the Kurds have been largely autonomy as they sat in the song longs then you have the rise of the Islamic state the Kurds led the fight against that group at the moment they're losing from their point of view they're losing a lot of territory they gained as well as a lot of the freedoms they gave not only from the Islamic state but also from the Syrian government as well. Martin patients thank you so much for bringing us all that latest and now Andrea Yossi from b.b.c. Monitoring is here and Andrea b.b.c. Monitoring of course looks at how the media is reporting on the big stories around the world and just as Martin was mentioning that it's a very difficult deal that has been brokered by the Kurds it's something they're not very happy about how this be how it's being reported in goodish media. Saw the finale has been a compromise and they're trying I mean considering Kurdish outlets harami statement from officials sort of belittling the implications of the deal saying that he would be on a military agreement which wouldn't have implication for the political structures on the ground in Kurdish. Areas that are currently under the traditional administration but he says unlikely because as long as you when you are allowed the Syrian army to deploying the Syria soup of course they were they would have to make concessions that are also pretty girl or there is also many many analysts or even local journalists are left speculating about the details of this agreement we have seen statements from that lead one of the high Kurdish officials saying that the Syrian either and this was on a on a Kurdish t.v. Or not he was saying that the Syrian army would be deployed basically from the Iraqi border and that he could molecule area until that until members saw way west in that in that province but Turkey is in between this area I mean Turkey's already in control of Sirte and territories and across along the Syrian border of course on the pro-government side so of course pro-government proscenium governor media have been cheering this so-called liberation of of this of this city and the fact that they've been now that of course they be showing showing footage of of locos cheering the arrival of the Syrian army as usual and there's an emphasis of course on Turkish violation of Syrians over 90 and some cases on how that tradition administration chose to mistakenly in their view rely on the u.s. And this is what they're getting as for a position media so pro Syrian opposition media we're seeing the Protarchus ones of course who praise the operation the Turkish operation because that's in their view it's a sort. Retaliation for Walker be sure they believe in the violations that they believe care dish militias have been committing on our abs and at the same time they see the Kurdish forces have been allied with the us government and so they they they saw the Turkish invention as something that is sort of in the core of the revolution the still doesn't have an illusion but I've seen time some proposition others are not specific praising Turkey not distance in France with her locals even in opposition held areas who say that. This is not about the Syrian uprising Turkey is just basically doing their its interest in Syria and Syrian soil it's not about the revolutionary and you know you know tea from b.b.c. Monitoring Thank you. Now one of the most searched things on Google in the last 24 hours is about fortnight and that's because it's reached the so-called end will shock has been working on the story for B.B.C.'s news media and bill for those of us who don't know anything about fortnight I know it's one of the biggest games in the world but just explain how big it is Ok so some people will be scratching their heads now going how can anyone not know about. A 100 players real people from around the world drop onto a map at the same time and if you've ever seen the movie battle right now it's basically that movie you shrinks the area and out of being shrinks and you keep going into only one of us left you the best man wins the last ones coming out so why is so many people searching about it well the game is structured in seasons every season something will change about the map of an audience of new characters and this map has been going since the game began so the map you jump into has been loosely the same bits have been changed but the basic structure has been the same last night where people logged on Season 10 was just about to end and when Season 10 ended the entire mup got walked up into a black hole and completely disappeared. When people are going to try and play the game well they can see is a black screen with a little black hole on it. Kind of in comprehensible numbers pop up occasionally there's been lot of means that on that I was scrolling down on Twitter what happens next well the season 11 will start in the next few days we think essential what they've done is we think they are going to start a new map now they've decided that they've done everything they can with the original map that they've had since the start of this game they want to completely redo it to give game is something new and to keep people coming back so the way they decided to do it was this huge public taking the whole gave offline to get everyone talking about it and everyone excited and in the next few days no one anywhere knows when exactly we'll get a completely new batch of people be able to play again when getting people talking is generally considered good news but has it all been good conversation Yeah I think the most part most of the the game's biggest names have been very positive about it you've got the likes of Lynn who's probably the most famous fortnight player in the world and he's been very positive about it Sam again lead in every fresh and this will give it that will Chuck thank you. And to Ecuador now a story we've been following closely on us is the nationwide protests led by indigenous groups you may remember the demonstrations began after President Lenin Moreno's government announced an end to fuel subsidies a spot of public spending cuts agreed with the International Monetary Fund indeed done for a loan now the government has just agreed to restore fuel subsidies in a deal with Indigenous leaders in order to put an end to the demonstrations the negotiations which are broadcast live on state television came off to nearly 2 weeks of violent protests we've been hearing from people in the country over the last fortnight and we've reached out again today to hear what how they're feeling now this message is from Santiago things have gotten worst the indigenous movement has remained firm in the streets of Key to protesting peacefully but they have been brutally repressed by this government we have been number of all reports of people killed and anger as a result of attacks with lethal weapons yesterday day Indigenous leaders accepted the invitation to talk and met with President Mourinho and then United Nations. Mediator they spent hours negotiating out of the end apparently Mourinho accepted to derogated decree $833.00 later the government said that was not what they had agreed and decided to make a different degree be trained indigenous movement once again what we see here in Ecuador is have governments submitted to the interest of International Monetary Fund and their demands and that is why they cannot go back with this measure because the monetary fund already ordered them that if they want to do the loan they have to implement all these adjustment measures. Well we want to the. Rule of Law there are no guarantees for us. Of international. Community and somehow some pressure. That from Ecuador. With you on from the b.b.c. World Service We're live from the middle of the newsroom in London and let's take a look at some of the stories from b.b.c. Africa I missed the International says there has been a rise in threats and attacks on journalists in Nigeria with members of the press operating under a climate of feel this 19 reporters have been detained by law enforcement agents journalists and bloggers quoted in the report say they were beaten and tortured during interrogations Nigerian security forces have repeatedly denied the allegations made against them mourners have been gathering in Nairobi to receive the remains of dozens of Kenyans who died in the open air lines crash in March all 157 people on board were killed when a fault caused the plane to crash shortly after takeoff from Ethiopia's capital city I disavow peace talks between Sudan strands national transitional government and rebels are taking place in neighboring South Sudan East African leaders including including Prime Minister. Are in the capital Juba for the start of. Now honorable fares analysts Sebastian Usher has joined me at the desk and we'll speak to him in just a moment but before that we wanted to hear what goodish people in downs along the border think of the Syrian regime entering the area this of course is the story of the. The Syria offensive that we've been tracking for the past few days I spoke to Osama Mohamad who is from the town of commission which is on the Turkish Syrian border one of the places where fighting took place last week. You know I only income from street I went to the city center today things becoming more natural people are in the streets they open their shorts you go you find anything you want and people are hoping inside the city center they feel more peace Miller 'd secure now it's still dangerous because we don't know if the Syrian regime will not do the same story us what's happened in a train already last year in January when that Turkish we're inviting a frame the Syrian regime say they will send troops and they will not allow Tookie to come to offering but it's not happens and Tookie come to and they make a genocide there and 300 south as well Gans who are displaced so still people have some fear. So that's fresh in people's minds exactly but it's because it is actually moving on the drums in term time or in a 2nd in members which include wanting people feel more better and so there is hope yet there is hope do you feel safe. I think that people believe they chose the sort of ministration their support ministration announce a statement that they have and no more agreements between as the air and Syrian regime the then 'd institutions and. The departments of the self administration including security while working in the region but for the border all the. It will be protected by Syrian regime for sure there will be more details and more talks and discussions soon but as we say there were no more sions we were left alone by everybody and if we didn't have a decision all of us will be killed or been displaced so that was the ball the best option for the. And for the for the cell of the ministration to have a deal with Syrian regime and not have the same experience as what happened in Africa after the Americans say that they will pull out and they will leave the region alone to face their destiny was told. This dependence on Syrian forces and of course the moving out of American troops and this attack where does this leave the Kurdish dreams and aspirations in Syria. For us it was a dream and then it was coming to realize we have been living in this revaluation seems 8 years and we have this 8 years of freedom and democracy we try to separate our ages in all the region unfortunately I think the Europeans the u.s. Doesn't like this kind of system to be separated here so they left us alone and they didn't stick with their promises so people still have the hope people still think that the Russians have the deal and the Russians will not break all the inspirations all of the years of the Kurds in the region and at least at least like a we could save our people and our community like being or not being in this life there were no more options but hopefully the details that will become soon as like . Kurdish people including the Arabs in northeast Syria will have their local decisions and will participate in the future of Syria even if it was the Syrian regime because the opposition left us alone and the opposition called us we are terrorists and we want to separate Syria which is not our aim so as I say to you if you try to have a conversion between all of this you have your per your e.t.s. And pretty far as the f. Was to save the life of the community he has. That was Osama Mohamad and he's at the Syrian border now at the desk here in the middle of the newsroom is our Arab affairs editor Sebastian Usher and we really ask you to come here Sebastian to help us understand the complexity of the various regional groups and the regions they hold on to around that border area and as I've handed over to you a colorful map which has basically been printed off a very useful explainer we call them explainers these articles that explain the conflict in in my new Sheen in full detail from a b.b.c. News website and and it mocks the c.d.i. Of the pedigree of Syria in various colors so if and of course we're talking of the northern border of the mass one week if I could begin from the north western edge that is a bit a small bits that is marked in our church. Yes So you have it live which is featured in the news a huge amount it was really the big flash point for the events of the past week it's where you still have what you call them rebel groups militias but essentially the forces which have battle against the government which now food mostly under Jihad is leadership still control a sizable amount of territory now we've seen the Syrian government launch an offensive that's trying to take it back it's got particular. Reasons for doing what it wants to open up the highways. It wants to free that part of the country because it's very important economic artery for the rest of the country if you start moving over from that towards the east you then come to this red patch along the border now that's where the Turkish forces launched previous incursions 2 previous incursions again against the Kurds again with the same stated purpose to prevent the Kurds who they see as terrorists to wipe e.g. The militia that fighting on the Courier side in Syria as part of the p k k which is. The. Group inside Turkey itself which has been fighting insurgency for decades that So the Turks using their military might took over those areas one place people may remember after 3 was a major flash point so that is but to the left to the west of Euphrates obviously is both. A lifeline for Syria and for other countries bringing the ability to grow crops along its banks but also it's a market and it's become a territorial market in Syria as well as it is at the moment now to the east which is a long long border more than $400.00 k. . Has been for the past few years essentially a semi autonomous Kurdish area now it's featured in the news mainly because of a battle because food against ISIS. You remember obviously rock. Kabbani on the border all of these names where the Kurds with obviously huge American backing military and financial Raible to defeat ISIS rebel to drive ISIS out of that area this reaches right across to the Iraqi border now the Turks present the Turkish president has been threatening for a long time to go into his area he wants to seal the whole of the way to Iraq this is what he's done in the past few days moving in with his forces and with the allies on the ground that they have so you have man page is the 1st big city that you see. And Bonnie these are probably the 2 next targets of the Turks are talking at present one is saying he doesn't specifically want Turkish forces to go into them he wants but local allies again this mixture of groups who wants food as rebels against the Syrian government but now essentially have allied both of their own reasons partly. Financial is mercenaries but partly also they have their own territorial. Ambitions in that area so he's saying they're the ones who are going to enter Now to complicate that this is where the Syrian government forces under a deal they did last night with the Kurds are coming to help because they're supposed to be mobilizing along that border to protect the Kurds from the food force for food brunt of the Turkish invasion as you go along you see. Who. That's is one of the major gains but the Turks have made so far in their advance Russell lane you go further across that also they've taken now you see on this map you see a little cerate of line that goes about 30 to 35 k. Into the territory that all this really is that is where President over one has said at least in this phase of a campaign he wants Turkey to take control but this buffer zone to take the power away from Kurds in matter right across to the border this is a long long border and what does this whole region like I remember speaking to one of the locals from the area and we're trying to get a sense of what's happening at the border and they said this is not a very devil a part of them well in some ways it's not huge developed in terms of big cities and big towns the big cities are rule under the control of the Syrian government now. Huge battles of attrition to women but it's not I mean it's undeveloped in terms of really kind of powerhouse economic. Centers but it is quite a fertile area. It is an area where the oil such as it is in Syria is located of a that's a little bit further south than this pocket territory by the border so it's certainly quite apart from what the Turks are talking about. For their own security for the Syrian government. Says he wants to win back every single inch of Syria but this is a part of Syria that he would want because it's actually economically useful it's not as important as the cities but still it's filled with lots of villages lots of towns it's very very inhabited So the Turks going in the fighting here is going to involve a lot of people a lot of people have already been displaced we've seen moving 140000 people displaced and that will only continue if the advance is in storage and there's a lot of concern about I is using this opportunity and a lot of camps I believe holding I suspect families where they're about to do that there are I mean those are dotted about this this region they're controlled by the cars because essentially nobody else want to take responsibility for them the Kurds have been saying for a long time we can't take the food responsibility for this it's stretching us absolutely to the limit of what we're capable of doing but foreign countries to which those ISIS members of families belong you know really don't want to hear anything more from and they pretty much wash their hands of them what this is done is it has made it's put in jeopardy those those camps we saw on Sunday that one of those camps essentially became a scene of pure chaos and the guards let the people going members of families not militants but family members women and children essentially But there are other camps where there are thousands of ISIS militants who are being held i.r.s. Has picked up on this as a propaganda drive issuing directives to its people say you know pack up get ready get out of that you can. This is your opportunity so yes a major concern which president has been criticized for very much in the u.s. And elsewhere. For his withdrawal of u.s. Troops has been to some extent about the Kurds and betraying but even more so about giving isis a 2nd wind by doing this Arab affairs editor Sebastian Usher thank you so much for that walk along the map it helps in clarifying the role of various power was and what they control on that border which is right now the scene for a clash between Syrian forces Kodesh militia and Turkish forces we keep tracking that story as we go on on or s. And heal from the people caught in the middle of the conflict. Now on the b.b.c.
