Well there's basically 3 plausible explanations for the fall of the Berlin Wall and one is that it was a kind of revolution from below and the other is that it was an implosion of the government level from above and the 3rd one is that it was a collapse from the outside that the Soviet Union failed to prop it up and so the truth lies somewhere in between all of those 3 explanations but the protest movement within East Germany was obviously crucial and that was led by for instance the Protestant church in various political groups but it was also crucial but Gorbachev was unwilling to send Soviet tanks to act against the East German population and it was largely peaceful was in it yes absolutely that's the really remarkable thing about the fall of the Berlin Wall you know just months earlier in the same year in 1809 you've had the massacre of Chinamen Square in China where students have protested against their own government where is what we see in East Germany in 1809 is a peaceful opening of the Berlin Wall it wasn't actually breached it was border guards who on that night decided to let people through because there was such a huge groundswell of people showing up for the border and has significance was it .
