NIST unfold at minus 2 degrees Celsius tonight 28 in height that's nice for the West 50 minutes past 9. The big conversation with Danny Kelly I'm baby seemed to be 95.6 warning for the West Midlands a very good morning it was minus 3 this morning how about the winter has landed my name's Danny with the Tillman listen on the big conversation this morning it's well it's multilayered in more than one way today it's about wait it's the start of a new year a lot of people be thinking about trying to lose a bit a tim but I for example have put on 5 or 6 pounds over the festive period a lot of people have put on about 5 or 6 pounds as well a number of papers taking issue with the cold by doctors this into this obesity should be recognized as a disease rather than a lifestyle choice I want your reaction to this please should obesity be recognized as a disease. Below double 956 and if we do recognize it as a disease does not then give the green light to people to overeat and say well I ate my fault is it tough it's a disease oh I want double double 956 or maybe it's time for more sympathy and understanding also on the show today I want to have a chat with you about bullying in the workplace called if youth coach Craig Bellamy is facing accusations at the moment he's been suspended by called it city. Rather uncomfortable memories from a when I was. And I was 18 or 19 as well so I want to share those with you and I want to talk workplace bullying this morning and also being bullied as an adult book I don't want to go back to school days I want to talk about workplace bullying as adults and maybe outside of the workplace but nevertheless as adults OK So workplace bullying and if you've been bullied does an adult nothing to do with your school days pleased like oh wait so I want to blow double not 56 years producing Good morning Tony now the start of the new year old so hassle thinking about holiday youthen taking our annual leave and today we're going to do something special we're going to share a top tip with our listeners I'm with the West Midlands and it's all to do with getting 3 weeks off would watch by only using a fraction of your holiday entitlement We'll share this topped it with you off to 10 o'clock this morning does it involve you throw in sickies no new. Danny Califf combo even seemed to be $95.00. OK Listen obesity. Is a disease. The number of papers taking issue with a call by doctors that obesity should be recognized as a disease rather than a lifestyle choice the Times says the Royal College of Physicians Augie is that of beasties caused by health inequalities genetic influences and social factors the Telegraph says one thing doctors all to be able to agree on is that lifestyle decisions can make a profound difference but if they embrace the language of disease then it could be welcome make things a lot harder to challenge the bug choices people make in the sun most of us know we could lose weight they say if we tried but what if our motivation. If doctors say obesity is not a fault goes the motivation over to you please this is going to be a lively one we will handle things sensitively of course we will. Go below double 956 we're going to be talking to a real part of the B.B.C. Dr Sarah Jarvis and we're going to be talking to a woman who is a campaigner. Full people who carry weights on for them to be accepted in society are not bullied well told to Katherine should as well will do it all after this. I love your thoughts the. Below double not far 6 should obesity be classed as a disease and if it is classed as a disease is that then mean that we are more sympathetic to people who are obese or maybe you think this just gives the green light to the people to consume more a move less because after all go through all my focus of this. That is of cool dreams. Time is it 9 minutes past 9 welcome to B.B.C. Documentary 5.6 thank you so much for tuning in so let's talk about whether obesity should be clinically classified as a disease a way to wait one double loadable No 56 will go to clinical director of patient Doc dot U.K. They get millions of its every month doctors Java's the body for burning a morning from London good morning and also let's welcome body diversity campaign a Katherine sure decade Catherine on a very warm welcome from Birmingham city center Good morning Catherine good morning how you doing ready with far and thanks in the Midlands OK Kathy we'll start with you do you think that obesity should indeed be clinically classified as a disease. And I read the report that some parts of the poll I agree with but clearly what is the samee is a wrong way to go simply because I think it's implies that somehow we have to be. Being facts and we somehow have to be you know I'm saying this is the most desirable state everybody people come in different shapes and sizes of different times in their lives for different reasons not necessarily all the way down to you know going on in their life it's more like what's happening in the overall environment as well so I think talking about diseases of wrong way to talk about people who just happen to have a larger sized body it's the actual word disease do you think that words if you like is painted as a signal or almost Yeah it is and also it's it's it's implied as well you can catch it all that it's it's something wrong with it I don't think it's a totally wrong way to talk about things that we do OK Dr Sarah jobs do you think the word disease is appropriate a good morning again good morning I think it's a bit of a double edged sword I have to say that I agree with Catherine in the definition but not in her reasoning at all I think we need to recognise that there is absolutely no question that obesity is related. Related to huge increased risks for health obesity I think Chris's risk of Type 2 diabetes increases your risk of many kinds of cancer it increases your risk of heart disease heart attack and stroke and we know that people struggle with their weight we absolutely know that we also know there's a big genetic element to it the problem with classifying it as a disease is that people will say Oh it's nothing I can do about it that it's not my fault Well in fact we also know that 20 years ago the number of people in the U.K. Who were obese was hauled off the number of base now and they had exactly the same genes so this disease if you like didn't come along all at once now Catherine how would you respond to that because that sort of refutes your points about it not being people's individual fault generally speaking those. I'm not really saying that it's. Just I mean just a list of was a slightly different point what you're really saying with my sinus generation saying that basically saying this is a better place thing to do but based better place to be there's no evidence that Philip people are actually healthier I mean we're seeing the simple evidence health . CARE has been huge please can finish Simonis does not equate to health same people get sick just as often as larger people and so there's if you just dismiss the larger people being generally unhealthy and for me that is a really slow against people who are actually quite healthy I'm doing very well thank you and not necessarily getting all the diseases you say that we listed for Philip people get those diseases too and I think it's unfair just to simply say because you are larger than you will because OK Let's talk to jobs. Well I'm afraid I have to disagree with that 100 percent and there are thousands of studies proving that for instance if you are morbidly obese and overweight your body mass index is 40 then you are. 60 times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than if you're weight is in the middle of the ideal range there is absolutely overwhelming evidence that people who are obese have a 50 percent higher chance of getting certain kinds of cancer yes there are people who are obese who do not get those conditions but you are absolutely stacking the odds in your favor by keeping your weight within the healthy range and let's face it the reason we have the classifications of the basically comes from insurance underwriters because they look at life expectancy we know that being obese cuts several years off your life and even more years off your healthy life do you think Dr Java's this could almost give the green light to people who have given up on trying to lose weight and say well I hate my faults go is it I've got a disease Well I think the worst case scenario is that that's exactly what could happen I think what I'd really like to see with these calls increasing the awareness and increasing the discussion is to have doctors nurses and particularly society saying actually we need to help people who have obesity because the vast majority of people who are obese to evolve us maturity unlike Catherine are not happy with their size they do want to lose weight and they know that losing weight would accrue health benefits also know it's incredibly difficult to do because of the obesity genic society we live in let's put up a cancer cut through for the benefit of the audience it's not television I hope you don't mind if I were to describe your you're a parent you've been on the telly loads so I know that your son in the camera shy boy I would classify you was obese would not be a fair representation. So I'm a larger sized person and I was accept the term abuse actually had to because I think it's again a circus people overlarge a sign of I think people I mean I think this is denying completely to the the way we're living and how we've lived not a lot. He has now said we've lived very differently the last few 1000 years we used to things like very hard work we were we were we'll raised on hard labor and now we don't have to do that now when we're trying to find my stuff that's just going to stay because people are large and there's something wrong with they have a hyper unstable disease I think used to bomb ways look and. Argue against science though. I would question as science which I question is paying for is we live in that we live in a commercial world that house business is a business is not just. Presently real you know response to the set of the science is all corrupt and science is not remotely corrupt and may well be a few studies which are funded by pharmaceutical companies but actually where obesity is concerned the vast majority of the overwhelming body of evidence we have comes from nationally funded studies such as the INS a study following hundreds of thousands of people over many many years and it is absolutely NOT funded by industry of any sort All right Kyra thank you Dr Savage office and Catherine sorry if I offended you by describing you was obese it wasn't minds and that's OK thank you thanks Sarah we'll talk again pleasure thank you very much 160080 i want to follow double 956 now I'd like to invite some callers on the wireless this morning please on how people feel about whether we should and I am going to continue to have apologized to Catherine she she didn't like the word obese and that's up to her but I'm going to continue to use the medically accepted term obese because it's a categorization of somebody who reaches a certain body mass index stage. The doctors use the term obese the insurance companies used to be so on the used some of these. If you are obese and you hear that you may have a disease that's why you're obese Listen I think I'm obese and I obese I'm 20 stone 6 foot 4 I thought I was 6 foot 5 I've been teleplay up a lion for 20 years I'm actually 6 foot 3 to off I went to the gym the other month and I measured I'm 6 foot 3 and are up a large Yeah so I'm 20 stone I'm 6 foot 3 and off so would I be classified as obese I don't know certainly overweight certainly got a told me on me that's for sure and I've got to give it a bigot's I may say Christmas I just wonder if someone who was contemplating whether to lose will win the battle of the Bulge whether all of a sudden you pick up the paper this morning and with those children little fingers like mine you flick in the pages and you thought you know what disease salt this salt this I'm going to put a sausage book it's not my focus of Keith is in Westborough high. Well not yet good morning pub still saying Happy New Year. And Brandon Kerrison they admitted the charges against them they went away with community orders so they were spared jail didn't go down they didn't go down and the judge said he didn't want to hand out a prison sentence because they didn't run his damages their opportunities in life so this is because of the quality of the grammar on text messages yes absolutely that the text messages were high in grammar and perfect spelling I didn't want to prospect no no lazy text abbreviate I mean our listeners would never chance know they would have a chance so let's come up with some snappy little tabloid headlines Yeah that's what I want. Be tunneled out on. It's going on all the tolling workplace bullying Well I wouldn't OK let me just give you 60 seconds on the occasion that I was bullied I was 18 or 19 years of age I went to the Lake District to work as a waiter the chef like the I says Come on in and learn how to cook which was a real compliment the brigade there's a clue that the kitchen brigade It was like a military brigade so you had rankings you had one of the bomb like me a commie chef and then you had a chef to party I think and then forgotten just be about 25 years and then you had a chef and then I mean why should the head chef was just this crazy guy it would throw knives around it would throw pots and pans around and he would scream at you and he would humiliate you when he would be a little you in front of everyone and you know from his perspective that's what happened to him in the 1960 S. Probably in a hotel in London and it didn't know long but it made me certain loot petrified of the guy out of the guy that he so easily saw and to go into why he was not when I 1st started with him got a lot of the gun a gun mortgage and I used that as a lay that's how you got a mortgage that you can play even under a ladder and you got I think a little internet on meltdowns and I think that ultimately has yet become like. A quiet and I think I don't I don't forceful always relating to a shelter because an anchor that attitude toward a common enemy strong side. Of I feel sorry for you mate because you know also what's blokes Listen I know we live in a time where quite rightly everyone treats genders or they should do they should treat men and women identically put the wrist not think about Feliz and not wanting to show that you're frightened or upset Oh Aunt Polly things go you know that and. It's a trauma on the spine still tough going to cause some dies. But even the lycopene a 1000000 things I think a color that completes all of us recently that. Because. Are you high at the moment possibly posh push to polish the prison so quickly 3 times push PUSHA to push for prison one push push out to push for prison push push to push for prison yes yes. It's only. That is just to say some a textile just news report saying both sold Heath is one of the most deprived areas in the city drive around the in every other car park many illegally our high end luxury cars in full by fals What is the current definition of deprived Well I wouldn't say that drive around there in every of the colonies 50 percent of the cause a luxury cars high end and full by floors but listen you're the one who drives around that's a thank you for your observation thanks very much into almost Me I musta missed that news story was no where there was a story about Balsall Heath in the news but thank you very much indeed let's talk about bullying in the workplace and Craig Bellamy who listen if you don't you football Craig Bellamy is a feisty feisty little former professional footballer international premier league feisty little attack a crack in player he was well fortunately played for the dark side he played for the Who did he play for the play for anyone around it Craig Bellamy I can't remember anyway he's been suspended by called with Cardiff City he's the called with youth coach Bellamy Haas overseas actually step down. From his role over bullying accusations maybe that's a temporary stepping down or a permanent stepping down I don't know listen it brought back memories of when I was was I a victim of bullying or should I just Mandell up toughed it up or tough that out even on the chef he just wanted the you know just imagine if you sing called Ramsey who again if you've seen him on telly screaming centimeters from people's cowering cowering faces people nervous full of trepidation. Yeah it was like it was it was like Gordon Ramsay was a bully. And he would say that all he wanted was the best product going out there and in order for the best products go out there on the plate for the diner he needed to make sure that the chefs who work for him you know they were under no illusions that they had to do the best that they could and if that meant shouting and screaming and throwing pots and pans of people and around people every now and again sharpening blades menacingly in front of you while scholarly and all of the psychological games and you know shoulder barging there was a bit of physical bullying course there was but mostly it was psychological although when I was a chef you often heard stories I never I listen he's going to the I never witnessed it with you it is stories of chefs being you know insubordinate chef quote unquote who had been locked in the walk in freezers for half an hour to teach them a lesson and things like that was part of the course I never saw it but that was part of the course you know in big hotels and in London for example. It was run like the military that's why they called the Brigade you had to which it would be the brigadier. He would be the car and all. Of it would be the colonel of the camp . Who knows. That the major I tell you well rather go through the pecking order of the military including the cab Colonel let's go to a real part of the station it's it's only the employment lawyer everyone needs to go to lead to the border Good morning good morning good morning to one month bullying is another robust man management says that lead to where is a larger room only it really does depend on the recipient and you know that you said you weren't in the kitchen you did feel bullied and not working kitchens you know it's an interesting one point and even under split in the kitchen. Yeah yeah yeah because that's that's the way it's and you know when he talks you know people look a mansion and I it will be a tougher environment but he's obviously a very serious concern and it's hard for employers to to address it because you know we have had situations and I've been doing this job this particular employing the low job for long China and well have employees come to us. On occasions of bullying and when you put in a new guy you know the right procedure they the recipient of the calling has raised a grievance call right procedure and generally the bully will say well I've been bullied you know and I might turn that around so he's really difficult one to the side yeah absolutely trust thinking about Craig Bellamy who was a no nonsense pulling no punches sort of guy and votes while he currently is a multimillionaire and an incredibly successful ex footballer and I'm just wondering whether. That's happened to him the screaming the shouts and the kicking of the of the football boots the dressing room I mean I don't know I'm using my imagination a little but to use the word snowflake which is what the military totally used to try to run a recruitment campaign the military the British army or the what he saw the news last word.
