Will correspondent Jenny Bond film at the Film Victoria and Albert Abdal starring Dame Judi Dench there will be give me that. Now before that we are going to be talking about micro props yet and what we've got to thinking is quite important. I guess for the British culture and historically something we're used to make your own little micro brewery at the end of your street you could go to this place to raise money and charity as well is a really it was the hub of the community was the pub and even though it's not the same anymore we still have a local We still hang out with our friends go I tell you the one that I really I. Just because of the way I guess is what I like about is what this is the Red Lion in Irving to write is on station and basically it's all in a pub and it dates back to an 18991 of the more historic wow in the West Midlands but what is what's really great about it is because it is going to be different prominent Square Club tower and then when you go inside novelas love this is the 1st time when seen yet so this thing Pabst sweeping kind of ninety's degree public bar has literally 90 degrees yeah. It's got stunning tiling all around it so it seemed he walking you know you heard the way you hear it every yard Yeah yeah exactly I just I just love the corner clock as I say and then the bar itself so what we're asking is we'd love to hear. Your favorite no equal brewery or historic one of the most historic That's the one I would say is not necessarily my favorite one of the more historic pubs I know of in the West Midlands the redlining Edington give us a call on 3453 double a double 95 things like Kris and chips now has often Chris stood in boro suddenly and. Now we're talking about pubs your local pub Yes Do you have a local pub my friend I do see it's actually been in Norton which is. 3 or 4 miles away from chefs know what else could be known but I've been using the kosher about 12 years or more now this pub that you've been going for about 1212 years we know that there's been a decline in people going to pubs for for obvious reasons because you find cheaper booze and what have you has this pub gone historic value to it as well it's always been the pope as far as I know but obviously it's evolved over the over the years. It's been a restaurant a very very nice very good restaurant for a long long time very popular place but I like it because it's relaxing to just go . In for a drink but I have my own little spot at the end of the bar where I sit right next to the radiator. You have your stool I love I love that piece of coal Pods has changed in such a big way growing up for me I remember my dad used to go to his label every single week right and he'd walk in and Firstly you'd be hit by the smoke that was inevitable but the big thing as a young girl for me was the fact that there was no food so I remember we'd have salt and vinegar Chris and would be sat there as my dad was you know having a chat with his pals and he'd be enjoying his pint you know pubs change now haven't they now is a little bit more about you know obviously having the food maybe even the Sunday roast as well what do you think about kind different times question for Mike to spend there isn't much money in which sales what sells I mean what Bob should buy drinks should stay afloat you know half the office Yeah but it's good they do you think it's an it's a nicer environment what do you think all you think it is because it's more family friendly in a way because you can sit down and have a merry and you know just drinking booze all day yeah absolutely it's what he was a was necessary and be it's a better it's a better way to go with your business to go on the cards to tell us the name again if you like will put it on the list of the 100 high hotel in Norton shifts not shop shit 100 House Hotel in notes and not on the literacy of a lovely afternoon thanks for calling in today Chris your most welcome thank you very much bless you take a great crystal ball that nominating his local pub Well we'd love to hear your local anywhere I'm betting I'm on the black come to talk about your favorite local because coming up next we're going to be discussing to Ronnie's on the popularity of micro pubs we'll be speaking to the man who claims he was the pass to bring the 1st my club to the last 9 songs that make you sing back. Sad. Songs that make you. Solos that bring back the memories. He sees b.b.c. Wm 94.6 radio for the West Midlands. Album pretty song that is Edgerrin the way that perfect now we're talking about favorite pubs if you've got your local favorite pub please get in touch with the show you can text one trip with restart your message with it Wm And also if you've ever found out about Michael brewing Well find out about we've we thought we need to get more into this in the West Midlands now there is Phil Bennett who's joining us here on the show today talking about Mica bring that he claims to be the 1st microbrewery here in the West Midlands and he's been established since 1997 it's a pleasure to have you on the show a fellow half in the air. Say failed talk a story for anyone who doesn't know what is a micro pub Well well couple of things 1st could I say I was likeable and they were. Ok. The other thing is a lot of the pope's different things you know I could probably. Where a little birdie exactly started off in Yardley in Birmingham in nothing Not the 7 silos moved to chase water in Staffordshire just not the ground was a country park in 2003 so being a sense that that how how does it work and you know how did you come up with the idea of doing a microbrewery then well. It was relatively simple because being made redundant I. Needed to retrain or do something different and I was very king I was a very came home. To the work there were a number of small a very start in the internal particular throughout. The country so I thought it would be a good thing to do so it was a big step for that song because there weren't too many around but of course this was lots and lots of. Anyone in the family a you know I mean. No no no I was I think I'm. Growing up for you. You know some of those brews that you really loved maybe you know kind of going out that you really love to drink and I was imagining yourself it must be yeah I have an expertise as well you know I mean this a lot of the bears are large when I was young. They're still my but they don't feel as though the same quality people were so maybe just an elven commodes in there. But yeah there's there's a lot more variety in people the so much more I mean I specialize or tend to specialize in dark various. Sports as models sort of thing which is getting quite a big market used to people people just like you know the pile of the bitters But now there's a big market for everything. From those ones there's a lot of also all sorts of American style European styles was you know you were awarded the West Midlands. Cameras esteemed in coveted champion b. Of the region accolades Congratulations accusation that unlike with you know Woods one of you will be is dog grave intelligent dog brave and I love the man like it's especially strong smiled so it's not too big so this is a little bit. But it's it's what you call a smile that's it's a very nice Well I would say that will touch. And also in times of your customers do they are you ever up to taking suggestions because if he is much as he was and if you say started off with a passion and now it's the hopefuls like you know a business in and you're receiving awards for as well have you taken suggestions maybe from customers in kind of what they would like to tell you Piers. Yes or no because it's often people. People say oh I like this but I've got to be sure that I can sell for Bruce Willis Yeah I just just do things on a whim so if it's a fail the that's the bit. That I'm missing when people suggest that if they yell try that and if it works that's great you know it's marvelous if it doesn't well not the end of the world 2080 what does it help your brewery are you. Into a new new taste buds or was I don't well probably probably more of the same well it sounds a bit daunting but because I've been doing it so long I've got quite a reputation for the dark but yeah I went to carry on with. Other quite a number of different. Really is becoming a lot and how big is your staff to manage this break. Well there's only made so much a one man business really hit Yeah and how long does it take you to you know make the product so for example if you if you're going to make your 1st batch for example how long does it take from start to finish while the actual brewing process is sort of a day's work if you like right from washing in the ground 1st thing in the morning 3 picks in the like in the afternoon and then you've got probably about a week's worth of Libya financing that's where it's turning to alcohol. Then 2 or 3 more days killing. And then. Barreling and once it's Baldock sort of sits there for another couple of weeks and it's ready to go it's not it's not a massively long process and then what finding Phil would you say is and of course I'm sure you love all of them but you must have a favor or is it dark or even perhaps. You know about so many other photos just out drug and smokes. And that's a real proper step you know the smell ph to it but it's quite a bit more bitter than that are right and. But it's black and white it's like it I think it's like a step should be you know a real real stash of that struggle smoke stuff so that's one that people need to come and try to guess then sell if anyone wants further details for yourself is there a website How can people get in touch the Web So it's not very good at the moment we're sort of. Between websites. You know. They're. Having your thoughts with us now if you would like to share your favorite microbrewery perhaps. This is David s. e. O o. O. O. O. O. O. O. H. O. B. O. O. O. O. Correspondent. Talking about the Film Victoria and starring Dame. Looking forward to that one I have to say I'm a big fan of Dame Judi Dench everything played every royal I think. And is the best yet you're right. Yeah I hadn't thought about that before I. Think she has played every queen. Every thing that Dame Judi Dench touches. The thing. Yet now you know a lot of people don't know about that but she does she has a very small tattoo on her wrist and. Now we're still asking you what is your favorite. Chance to put it to the list and if you have. Spoken to and you have a favorite. Drink You can only find from the brewery. We'd love to hear it from you 345356 or 813 the message we've. Been great music Simon Simon and Garfunkel it always starts off with take back the good. That are. 5.6 Now ahead of the release of the Film Victoria Day We're going to be speaking say the Navy. And the research and I know the film stars Dame Judi Dench and of course Eddie is out is based on the book of the same name by Bonnie bassy about the real life relationship between Queen Victoria and the Indian Muslim 7 Abdul Karim And we're joined now by broadcast agendas than former World correspondent Jenny bond Jenny it's a pleasure to have you on the show thank you now I've got to ask can you for anyone who doesn't know much about this tell us about the fascinating relationship between Queen Victoria and of course Abdul. Abdul Kareem he was. Rather striking looking young Indian man. He was told and handsome and he was asked to come over for Queen Victoria's golden jubilee to actually present something to. Honor a award to Victoria. I mean he basically was brought over as a servant and to add a little bit of exotica to right to the celebrations and she looked at him and she just I don't know what in the in the film I don't know how true true this is but you know that I sort of met and he's not me wasn't meant to look into her eyes and she was she was struck by his good looks and she cultivated a friendship with him and he stayed with her for many many years and became far more than a servant to be he became at her request munchie which means teacher because she was fascinated by India should love to have been able to go there but was unable to because it was felt to be a threat to her life to go there and so Abdul told her all about India and taught her to do and she wrote many many journals in order to every day they learn the language and had a deep friendship it's amazing I mean it's it is in your respect we know a lot about Queen Victoria but I do feel that this aspect of her life is something that's never really been talked about or even really touched upon in this way you know as you say that there was a book written and also I made a documentary for the b.b.c. . See but it was a very late night I remember. Or something but I did make a documentary about 10 or 12 years ago all about Abdul and for that I went to the Isle of Wight which where the Queen Victoria had a holiday home when she was very fond of and where she had constructed and designed an Indian roller derby room and that is full of Indian artifacts which is still there to this day and in the Indian corridor or which leads to that room there was a portrait of Abdul and I so I made a documentary about that and learned then as we see in the film that Abdul introduced her to Indian food for example to spices and curries and he would mix his own spices up in the kitchen there and make a curry and she thought it was absolutely delicious but all this was against a background of great hostility and prejudice from the court around her do you think that that is part of the reason why you know of course this year we've been remembering the 70 years of partition of India and it's been quite poignant here for a lot of families Harry u.k. Looking back and reflecting upon that relationship between Britain and India I think it's quite important that this film has come out in this year well yeah and it really does show how unkind and deeply prejudiced people around the story were and how she she tried she really blazed a trail in showing that one shouldn't be like that I mean she was extraordinary she she just would not hear any criticism of Abdul again and again they tried to undermine him demote him and get him sent back to India. Just badmouthed him and she defended him all the way. Even through when he he was riddled with disease at one point and she just said well just cure him then you get it. She just she just protect. I pray 1st it's. Spring. Because it's so easy to do is live with it so easy to do. That's what I. Story I do you look at me with a. Full well. They written a good bit when there is this. Clicks list at breakfast back tomorrow morning from 6. Point 6. a group the Lord Michael and Aretha Franklin I knew you were waiting for me all my babies that I am 95.6 Now very good off city and it's sunny and shy we've been having a catch up in a chat with former b.b.c. Will correspondent Jenny bald and ahead of the d.v.d. Release of the Film Victoria and Abdul starring Dame Judi Dench now is about Queen Victoria and her relationship with the Indian 7 and the film stars one of my favorites is Dame Judi Dench how to waltz Jenny about her research into Queen Victoria. Funtastic Hi Jenny said. Hi Jenny how you doing very well. We'll try and see if we can get that piece of into a can of which we have a little bit of a difficulty but in the meantime we'll play to. Mrs Robinson. That was Simon and Garfunkel Mrs Robinson all b.t.w. I'm now we've been having a chat with former b.b.c. Royal correspondent Jenny managed to catch up with her before the show ahead of the d.v.d. Release of the Film Victoria and Albert Dole it's about Queen Victoria and her relationship with her Indian 7 Abdulla film stars Dame Judi Dench in Wales Jenny about her research into Queen Victoria travel for the West Midlands. O'Day I'm so sorry about that was the to be having to live a problem with our deaths today and so we try and see if we can play that piece again. Well mostly on the Isle of Wight and learning and learning there about it and reading some of the books about it I mean I didn't do the original research on it we just made this film. For the b.b.c. But I was astonished then yes to I mean I never thought the Queen Victoria would eat curry or. Have any particular interest in India but of course she was the Empress of India and it would have been her great heart's desire to go there. And this relationship went on for well till her death absolutely till her death. And after that won't give away the end of the film but things didn't turn out so brilliantly for Abdul after he was didn't have the protection of his Queen while of course I mean when you talk about you know will families of course he yourself for many many extensive years reported on the role from you have you always been interested in the royal family we do have a fascination with them daily. Yes But no I wasn't interested at all. Happy being here General reporter and b.b.c. Correspondent television correspondent I always say you know then you you have your suitcase in the back of your car your passport your bag you wake up in the morning you've no idea of you going to come home at night you probably will be by the really really boring day in the office although you might be on the next plane out to you know an earthquake or a plane crash or a volcano or whatever. So life was exciting as a general reporter it was exciting as a royal correspondent too but I was simply asked to do the job and rather begrudgingly agreed and you know with with the over these years if that perhaps as you say begrudgingly agreed but what was your relationship with them like. In a word distant I suppose people imagine that you know I'm standing outside Buckingham Palace I've just had tea with the queen yeah not true. But I mean obviously I knew the Queen and I had conversations with her around the world in the many receptions here and there and chatted with her and with the Duke Charles I knew. Brother better. You know had one to ones with him at Highgrove and Diana I did know quite well to be to be honest but you know the royal family are not fond of journalists why should they be and so you always got the idea really except for Diana that they were speaking to really through through gritted teeth Yes I mean if I've just finally got to ask you of course this year big year we've had about the announcement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle What's your reaction been to that you know do you think that over the years perhaps the the press is kind of built a stronger or better relationship maybe with the Worlds. It's still a very tense relationship I think particularly as far as the as the boys are concerned William and Harry because I don't think they'll ever forgive the media and the paparazzi for what happened to their mother but yeah the news of of Harry American has just been undiluted joy I think really. Doesn't matter if you're a royalist or not I'm not particularly but I do I do like Harry I think he's he's a you know I think he's turned out brilliantly. He's shown his vulnerability and his dedication to. Humanitarian issues as has Meghan I mean she's the real deal she's a mature woman she she's the age that Diana was when she died. And she's articulate confident sparkling beautiful a madly in love and I just think it's a it's a win win situation you know that they look very happy together well listen it's a pleasure having a chat with you Jenny very much looking forward to seeing Victorian album Abdal on d.v.d. Is having on the show thanks so much thank you. There a. 6 . On a very good often if. You sell me a. Book Of course the film starring Dame didn't get that far and.
