Across ace and she'll be with us every 50 minutes or the next trouble of sitting just over what 5 or 6 minutes time so I do stand by for about well now we're always talking about exercise and we're always being told how good it is for us and it could knock years off force but ph from Warsaw The She's reading interesting not true just in June though she's still escape from across 58 j.p. Practices in the West Midlands where doctors actually prescribe exercise and early on in the program we remain a green weight the idea is to get frail older patients. To exercise classes now it's been a big success since it started it's not going to be rolled out across the country and let's hear a little bit then all of John's funny who went along to the class he made grain to find out how he got on and that. He. Lived as more water in the rocks no fault or whatever about it said knowing too for his own words I just remembered the parts in your home that you're doing so right read what you. Could do with the rover which reckons never seen it is that no no no no it's not only is that I've got you know fitness aspect is also there for a social. Life people all these people. With lovely people who can chop them whatever out you eat. Hot hot sticky. Mornings and they animate say. You're not even slightly. A maverick just watching but really I can't imagine my life without exercise and it means that when. I can go at the same polls a laves and I can claim my brain doesn't like to look off to my bar and I do everything myself I'm not reliant on anybody for anything and it's better for us to come here and do this well than take the pill. And the market well I still think it's been a fair offer you know. Social sorry does it affect this is just. Because you have to remember different sequences there is good reason it is good and they get you into the next assault by somebody just because. Then we go to a coven of a couple so it really is annoying so they're nice I think on. Could manage the coffee pot with. Out of the coffee. Pleasure. And increased from worry about East. Asia it was recommended to come here because I've got a problem which way yet and my legs are to improve. Income in. Moving coming ever since then I had a massive illness and I recommend. This from could have. Got to an exercise class and more general health of exercise my legs and so then our. Guys are. At an improvement and you have since coming here for me to go to. The. Mission if I didn't come saving throw the greenbacks right even sit up and down in. 3 in the pompoms of energetically as a cyclist the front seats are not really. So James Fleming one of the many exercise classes he may agree with the people of a certain age older generation to get them an exercise in and I'd like to wager if we did go for the coffee with them he didn't boy it's now Julie Robinson the Walsall play a teacher who founded the sessions and she really enjoyed listening to that then and she joins us in the studio this morning so how did all this happen how did it all get started morning oh well I was fed up of teaching children basically a little bit disenchanted with my teaching job and it was a stage in my life where my mom and dad were getting older and showing declines in their health and being very concerned about them not so many people worried about their parents or grandparents not really knowing what I could do even with my background in pay so I do. A qualification to retrain and start teaching exercise to older people I never really thought from that this would happen and the class was so successful and it was such a demand and just seeing the transformation in people's lives from coming to when our session after a few weeks they could do the things that they couldn't do before it was really addictive so how did it go from which sounds brilliant actually doctors prescribing people and sending them to our well they the 1st stage was making a d.v.d. To help people exercise at home and then I met with Professor Janet Lord at University of Birmingham and she really got behind this and encouraged me to do more to make the resources available because this so little out there for people who think they shouldn't exercise or be scared about it and after that we wanted to get people together in the classes it's the magic of bringing people together that makes all the difference so we've now developed a really unique training program it's called fabs and that stands for flexibility aerobic spell and strength which are the things that we know we should do as we get older but sometimes a bit tricky and that's what we rolling out and getting people along to the classes now the doctors have recognised the benefit we've done a pilot program with G.P.'s across Birmingham and now we've been commissioned to deliver this in a number of g.p. Surgeries where people get to the doctors so I can get to that class and in that 12 week program we turn their behavior around and show them they can exercise it's a mindset thing is much of anything. And I think people can get in a rotten thing I have an exercise for years I couldn't do that and then we talked about didn't we few months off James that if you get to a certain age you really don't want some people wouldn't want to go into a gym with all these young bodies pounding you don't want to myself look silly they are I think that comes through very strongly when people come to the class is that they have the same Barrus mint. Well I'm going to look silly what if I can't do it and for us a movie to lose it's about making them feel welcome so our instructors are trying to make sure everybody can do whatever they're able to they can exercise sitting down or standing up so no one ever feels embarrassed sounds good and also this great social side to it as well as that's a very clear language and yes it's so important sometimes people come it's the highlight of the week to get together with paypal and they turn up early and leave late and as you say go for coffee all they see then join other groups and start doing things in reengaging again terrific They said they could do x. Like sitting down with a 9th you can have a couple Cero picks. I think someone's already Yeah one of the I am so. I have a go and I'm not someone sitting down on my chair facing the microphone Yes. Well there's one thing that we're really trying to get people to do everyone that comes to act classes and anyone can do it listening at home as well and it's just called the sit to stand and ease as simple as coming forward on the chair bringing your heels back a little bit yeah you can push down and you simply stand up. And sit back down and then you keep going for 30 seconds. And you count how many you can do and what we're trying to do is get people to do as many as they can and then track their progress and we have people that come to a class that can already do want to. By the end of 12 weeks they're doing 10 or 12 and what we say is you can actually drop a decade in terms of your muscle strength and that means your health and wellbeing will improve by just doing this every day at home 32nd seat to stand I said to be rather elsewhere permission to sit and have any. Right thanks ever so much for coming in this morning thank you Julie Robinson a pretty good teacher from Warsaw who looks like you've upon something here that's going to make a big impact already is going to make an even even bigger impact and so many more people's lives are coming in I'm tired I have to. You to say so you know as if it was about yeah yeah so when we said now is very poignant to you you've got some fabulous memories so when you're a young guy what you remember about where we are now well take me back to 978 as a 16 year old and for years I heard this noise coming from from a long distance and it turns out that it was the speed right was bikes going round and I guess curiosity got the better of me one night we just walked it was about 3 miles and I was hooked from the moment I started you know there was the smells I mean for those you go to speedway they'll know that this the cost a little smells a lot that way and methanol and all that sort of make make studying with the block traditional block country smells of Polk sandwiches scratchings that sort of thing and you really had a scene set for you what was it like when you walked into the stadium for the 1st time I guess as a 16 year old you know I'd done all the football stadiums have been quite a big big baggies fan I've done a lot of the stuff you know with the whole thing once and one of them coming to a small stadium lawyer like like totally Would it was a little bit. Under inspiring I guess it was it was. Literally just ramshackle study been around since the thirty's. And then you work here is that correct that's right 1st job got a job on the car park if I'm honest it was more to get my entry into the speed right because you know it was a great way to save money in those days as well but for me it was if I actually start to earn some money for the 1st time as a 16 year old working on the car park just may my dad actually worked on the truck East to do some of the truck dragging on there my mom was treasurer of the supporters club I'm a sister was actually a cheerleader and as your passion grew you actually met your wife 3 speed right you're fast boy that's right yes Richie we was from Bilston he says I was exotic as he seems but we were actually on a trip to the states to see the $99.00 he will finally Costa Mesa are over there one in Los Angeles Coliseum did my 1st wife there wow I'm almost as hairy a lot when there's a stadium a because right now it's very residential but what was the loike and what was the atmosphere like on on a on a game day as it was a long Rice day you could always eat that the sounds the smells already outlined those but that the fact is there were factories all around and the one thing that's missing today is the industry the Used To Be Around here people could always go and watch for nothing on the playschool Scotchman's bank you know there's little nod to the black country that we've got here but it was very much more of an industrial setting role than the residential one we say today and then you've kicked on now to follow Speedway all around the world Yeah that's right yeah 2nd off to my myself we did all but one of the speedway g.p.s. Last year went all the way around Europe couldn't quite get to Australia but maybe next year what's that camaraderie like between you guys who travel a lot of fun of the Havens you know that's just the big thing you know probably got more friends in my life you know based on Speedway than any other activity that I've done and you know I do some announcing open books and speed right now as well so there's lots of different ways you're used to you stay in touch with these people of the social media makes it so much easier these days but the people that I've met from the past back. Back in the late seventy's early eighty's the camaraderie is fantastic and the friends for life how important is speedway to this part of the Black Country because I mentioned earlier the Speedway's name of the town here how important is it to Craig Well I think it was one of the things if you ever talked about whatever you went there one thing that we did have was a great Speedway tame the early eighty's we dominated a lot of the of the speedway trophies that were on offer there and I think it was a real big part I mean they were thousands of people used to gather here every Saturday night it was it was almost. A ritual the house and something akin to coming to church it was the place to come on a Saturday and how proud are you to come from this area I'll block countries more routes it always will be married a Brummie 2nd time around but you know I am a block on True Blood and that is he's right at the very heart of that and this is why back Wednesday instructor I came in lower Cornel texting to say my granddad used to work as head barman cried least speedways that was rich on this and they're talking to Mark North also That's way back when state the place or places in the West Midlands that played a part in your life where you used to go out playing with the might as a kid they used to drink the night club used to go to where you met your partner a place that special to you anywhere in the West Midlands tell us the story in phone in you can text in and maybe in the next couple of weeks will come round to see you and you could be on the telly as well over 3453 double I double 956 is the number to call or text on one trip or for a start you message w.-m. . There we need to make it abundantly clear that this is not. What this. Situation. Now has an officer from the military reading a statement on the state board cost as a b.c. They say they're purging what they call criminal elements around President Mugabe he's $93.00 and has been in power since 1980 they say he is safe but they aren't saying where messages are being put on Twitter from the ruling party which describes the takeover as a bloodless transition Grant ferrous is a former Harare correspondent for the b.b.c. He says it's all off to Mr Mugabe set his deputy in favor of his wife Grace with immediate spark rather was the sacking last week. Of that man you just mentioned one of the vice presidents ever seen one gag where he's a longstanding ally of President Mugabe he fought in the liberation war with him back in the seventy's and most people including me assumed that he was a leading candidate to take over from Mr McCarthy whenever he finally chose to leave but Mr mango who was sacked because he was accused of plotting against the president and his chief accuser is thought to be Mr Mugabe's wife Grace who is also seen as a possible successor and she's she's got rid of other challenges in the past another vice president Joyce maturer was sacked about 3 years ago for alleged plotting so McGarvie is is nothing if not ambitious and grass adds that it's not all completely out of the blue this has been coming for a good couple of months and the army I think are saying here they are remain united it seems the moment but the Army seemed to be saying that they support him as a man and he's their man to lead the country whenever Robert Mugabe chooses to step down but again the Army is saying at this stage this is not a takeover this is not a coup but goodness me it looks like one Ok Thanks very much Lou And of course we'll have more on that developing story in Zimbabwe on the news bulletins right throughout the day here on big big c.w.m. . As a b.b.c. 95.6 radio put away as Mitt. Romney clearly then drop in on the show in the next 5 minutes or so to tell us what's happening on his show after 9 and what the what's on the agenda this morning for the big conversation is heading towards $22.00 and we're going to talk about humanoid robots so robots that look like course and the becoming more and more common they can shots they can show facial expressions which is more than half of the actors in Hollywood. And they can carry out tasks as well but could they soon be doing jobs around the house or looking up to people who need care this might be familiar if you saw that Channel 4 series humans. The brand new synthetic. Standard domestic profile install this is the best thing you will do until family and. We need one because this isn't what is done for young people with a new home somewhere in Syria for us so will be I promise if I have a right to love the doctor got to stop strangling. Us and we don't know what. To push while experts including NASA a gathering at a conference in Birmingham today to discuss how robots will influence our lives or Jeremy Wyatt is a professor of robotics and artificial intelligence at the University of Birmingham I thought this was just science fiction So what's happening today so so it's sort of it's a bit of science fiction but in Birmingham city center today so it's the 1st time that the world the world's leading science conference on on humanoid robots as has come to the u.k. So it's in Birmingham and it's for 3 days and we've got a number of humanoid robots here including some ones from from down the road at the university and yeah we're just going to be talking about the latest developments papers are going to be presented on all kinds of things on how to get robots to walk how to get him to manipulate objects how to get him to learn how to get him to interact with people but it's basic science so it's still a long way from being deployed in your home so how far away I mean how long is it going to be a before you can get a robot. That's going to be awhile I think but for things for example vacuuming you can get a you can buy vacuum cleaner today a robot vacuum cleaner and it will at least according to my wife it does a better job of the vacuum if you. So you so robots are already in your home if you've got something like intellects or one of those other you know voice operated devices that's essentially home or your home is going to become a robot because you're going to automate it you're going to get the lights coming up coming down when you want to set heating and it will learn the patterns of your behavior so that it will do it without you noticing eventually that that's entirely possible I think the. It's gradual isn't it because it happens bit by bit you don't realize because you actually look back to the lives we believe even 10 years ago yes it's come on so much in it's going to happen in the next 10 years again like you know saying you know of progress I think that's a really good way of describing it is that sort of each year it's a little increment but when you look back over a period of a long period of time you know wow what a big change so we're going to see you know increasingly we are it's going to take a while but we are going to see autonomous cars but I think we're going to see them in ways we don't expect So right now your car reverses perhaps if you're a nice one it was a may drive. But it might be your car reverses or it might be that it detects you know automatically the speed signs on the motorway or it does automatic braking for you tells you when the someone actually those kinds of things and it just gradually become more sophisticated as well as the quirky stuff that we've mentioned and touched on here the light hearted stuff about back in the corporate there in the who've been a whatever we mention in the introduction that could also be used to look after people who need care so how would that work so there are what we definitely don't want to do at least in my view is to have a robot looking after granny on our own that's that's just completely inappropriate inappropriate ethically and it wouldn't it wouldn't provide you what you need what I think you can use them in in a few ways 1st of all so we were working we had a project where we had mobile robots working. In a residential care facility in Vienna in Austria and we those robots were doing things like guiding people around the building. And also we had them working with patients who had out Simers and they were going they used to go to talk where they would sing songs and the robot would play the music and when the robot was involved it worked much better and you got amazing reactions from the patient so they were still human care is leading it so I think that's one way it's going to go or it might be used technology to sort of maybe For example. Provide some some information about how someone's doing if they're living on their own and then maybe sort of poke you and say hey you probably want to give mom a Skype or a phone call because she looks like she's feeling a bit depressed so ultimately it was going to humans but the robots help you to do it better he said Our city is science fiction but it's becoming reality isn't it I think you win the prize today for the most impressive title as I read out earlier a professor of robotics and artificial intelligence will tell you what's the best thing or the most exciting thing that you are currently working on at the University of Birmingham or I like to tell us no no we can't tell you I think the thing that we we're we're most proud of at the moment is so we're doing we're doing a lot of work in Robot manipulation and so what we do is we have a robot he's called Boris and and he picks up objects that he's never seen before and this was something we started working on a couple of years ago and it's getting better and better so we can and the robot has a has a human like hand and so it can pick up the teacup and sort of stick it is very polite it sort of sticks its pinky out and then picks up the take up like this and it but it's one that it's never seen before and this was a really hard problem nobody knew how to solve it and that's going to be those kinds of sort of things that for humans are very basic but for books that are really hard and trying to get those basic things right that's that's where a lot of the challenges still are you know a robot that probably works Downton Abbey than if you lift his little finger you know it's it's fascinating and it's exciting at the same time a real journey into the on and I want to thank you for coming in this morning to us to think either of them to robots out there by the wire. I don't think so. How do you know. Because obviously they're going to show you. Thanks for coming in this morning. And Night.
