Elicit up all night here on 5 live with me Richard Foster and with Foster Hirsch to Foster's Foster by 1st name and Foster by last name were discussing festive favorite films here on 5 loveable night between now and 338-5058 via text plenty of those coming in our 808-590-9693 extension 4 your calls e-mail up all night at b.b.c. Doco dot u.k. And we are available of course on social media as well plenty of tents coming in here Foster let's just have a quick look down here we had a few takes for the Family Stone I don't know if you've seen this this is a sort of slightly more modern one modern day Christmas classic is how Chris Davis in Abergavenny describes it a wonderful emotional bittersweet Christmas film starring Diane Keaton Claire Danes and Sarah Jessica Parker have your handkerchief ready for tears of laughter and sadness a modern day classic Are you aware of this film I know the film but I haven't seen Yeah I think I think it's got similar kind of family traits to 2 other ones we mentioned about people going and meeting families different families to their own you know you have a certain people you know potentially snobs or they might just live in a certain way and then they go and see all these wacky other relatives and with sometimes hilarious and sometimes tragic consequences and I suppose that kind of goes back to that theme of family doesn't it the feeling of of coming together at Christmas well that you can't take it with you yes yes goes back to that yes someone said that that's available I think when you choose well so if you want to go and root it out then $938.00 film it will be available online as well Bernard in Newcastle is called us 15909693 Hi there burn it. Long Gentleman good morning now you just looked a little always like much in the original the 1st miracle on 34th Street absolutely ring don't who's on trial I was going to mention it and I was even thinking sitting here wondering how come nobody's mentioned Miracle on 34th Street that's a classic They have a few have. A bit a bit remiss in in getting to me but yes that's a Christmas classic and you know I always like to use that film is the test case it's sentimental but it's not too sentimental it's it avoids you have the word treacle trickly No you don't know that words that are equally outreach precisely trickly s. a 2 to 0 in sentimental or sweet sickening the oversweet the film is very sentimental and warm hearted but it avoids tree cleanness it's a delicate balancing act but it succeeds and Natalie Wood is just charming at this little girl what do you what do you like about it but it would be what do you like about it it's always worth watching I think when you get the record seen by the us it will stop this who's got all these letters to the Christmas yes. All of the members of the stuff I don't know how I look the hierarchy is he says Well politics was on trial and let's send all these sex a mail to him and then again when they do come in I think the judges completely disappears from there were. A pile of letters. On his bench and it's not really about a child's belief in Santa Claus Yeah yeah I think one of the feelings that comes out right at the end is you've always got to believe yes it was in my ear. All the structure against it. And you still believe faith belief in faith so it's whatever religious film in its own way in allegorical terms in allegorical terms yes. Any others Burnitz any any other ones you really like well I always like watching his courage to mention Bible already but Bill Murray mourns with Cisco there are it's only that it's humorous as well as. An end at the end of Scrooge to be you'll always you know actually speaks when he hasn't been for a long time and yes that's always a yes. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Home Alone people have again we had some tasks yes we've had some types because I want to talk about home alone thanks so much today for your call we'll let you know we can we talk about home alone because I mean this is another one I think this is this is one of those films depending on when you see it a lot of these films become favorites because you see them when you're very young and I'll give you another example for me James Bond Goldfinger is a particular favorite of mine just because I saw it when I was about 10 years old and when you see films at a very young age and they stick with the for the rest of your life it's a really special thing the Home Alone was one of those films and yes I absolutely loved it but what's in it for you Do you think Foster What do you like about well Macaulay Culkin is an extraordinarily charming child actor yeah you can't resist him. I think that that's it right there he's adorable you want to spend time with him how old was he at the time 7 years old thing it wasn't more than 8 or 9 at the most it was sort of miraculous wasn't that he had such presence and and ability at that age yes putting aftershave on at the age of 8 years old with a reaction that was that was always a great is that film popular in the Very much so yes and obviously you know if you've got the you've got to Home Alone 3 times how many sequels did they make the 2 or 3 wasn't at least 2 or 3 but the sequels aren't anywhere near the quality of the original and asked that it has that slapstick again doesn't it we spoken quite a bit about slams it has a slapstick but the slapstick doesn't rule out the sentiment they managed to sort of combine them and keep the change you filthy animal. As it came up Joe passé of course playing the brilliant villain brilliant terrific movie you know when it was released nobody thought it was going to do anything the studio didn't have much faith in it and it's one of those films that are you just responded to and it's the audiences not the critics who've made that a classic Yeah absolutely I suppose again something for everyone in it you know the adults a lot of the humor is well written and the kids all just love the jokes and the fact that people are getting hit in the face with frying pans and every And they like the kid and they identify with that yet but but but adults like it too that's the secret it's a it's a film that seems to have something for just about everyone a cynical I would say a family who would never do that you never get halfway across America on a plane and suddenly go where's my kid but that's the wrong if you if you take it that literally you don't have a movie that's you know sort of forget that. Paul is in Chippenham in Wiltshire Hi there Paul Larry good morning to you gentleman Good morning and. 2 things really to normal I just said all planes trains and all. Immobile was a because it's got the wonderful gong Candy and I think a much Miss Act and also because it's about getting home to family isn't it is yes it's exactly about that and also with Joan Kandi reminds us maybe you have one or 2 of our relatives incredibly irritating him anyways but hugely in Deering and there's that bit of what I'd like to but don't kind is that bit of pathos as well so what do you think of the film for us I think the exactly what you think of it he what I liked about him was he he never looked or seemed like an actor he sort of looked like a regular person. He didn't look like a movie star that there was something about him that you responded to on the screen and I think it's the mixture of the comedy and the pathos just as you said and the film has that and it's all about getting home doesn't mean doesn't matter how hard it is to get there you've got to get there yet and I think we can all relate to those days when everything is against us when we desperately want to get somewhere and it's just not happening is it and everything that can go wrong does go wrong you know it's not wrong does go wrong but we get our reward in the end you know I mean one last thing about that I really love the film but. There's a bit at the pole where you have this incredibly foul mouth to rage and it's one expletive of turn of the and to me I thought that was so unnecessary and it just jarred with the rest of the film and that's not what this season is about is it I couldn't agree more we didn't need in the film do we ever really needed movies Well certainly did did it Matt movie. And all the great favorite which I was think about Christmas maybe it's very English for you foster it is good bye Mr Chips Robert don't act. Very English very English very English yes very English but not so well known here I like it a lot and I actually like the musical remake Did you see that I didn't need to yes I thought I thought that was a very underrated movie I guess it came out of the time when movie when musicals weren't quite in. Music fans were at that point over produced and absolutely too expensive it the film was over produced and then they released it as a road show and Gage meant it was very dismissed but if you look at it fairly it's pretty good and it comparable in some ways to the original I think it's been unfairly dismissed and didn't start believe got music by Lesley Britta's really quite a composer Foster before I go and I'm going to let someone else have a got going back to It's a Wonderful Life show to glorious black and white and then they both tried to colorize But do you think the colorized version in the current state detracted from it do you think we should colorized these classic saluted not absolutely not we should we should watch the films as their creators created them as what be true to the creator's intentions they did not think of making this film and color and it doesn't look right in color shot for black and white designed in black and white and they because of course color was around they could have film that they could have absolutely they chose a black and white and it works in black and white beautiful black and white I think it's a bit like the difference between radio and television I mean I have no idea what you look like forced to by 2 parts get a picture of you you know black and white you don't know what the colors are but you make your own covers up your own colors and black and white has its own texture and its own reality and so. An interest and a film shot by a master in black and white can't be you can't transfer it to color it's really it's the wrong thing to do I think color conversations died out hasn't it. Yourself Vogue I think out of vogue but it's past I think it's one of those it's a bit like 3 d. Films isn't it you know people think oh we've got this new technology we could we could color in all these old black and white films but then I think most people now Foster agree with you they think that you know why would you want to do that why would you want to do that although I once saw I'm ashamed to say colorized film that I kind of enjoyed and that was a Laurel and Hardy short called The Music Box Ok I'll guess the piano up the piano that they are that in a colorized version and it actually was sort of charming but well but black and white wasn't an important element of that film as it is and it's a wonderful life well I'll let it go but just so folks Chris perhaps who kill in a pleasure to talk to you oh thank you very happy until it's Christmas but Same to you and Paul that's fine thank you thank you Merry Christmas to you thank you very much so if you want some good movies Yes Well absolutely it's a wonderful life is top of my list. Certainly and not too bad a few others Thank you Paul thanks for allegedly vehicle Paul and chip in him and what they're calling us with his festive favorite we can discuss you'll see between now and 338-085-9096 extension 93 is the number 85058 feel text e-mail up all night at b.b.c. Where young lover was we left him asleep on the bus how old was the kid. 7 years old and did leave him behind Ok so it is also can happen you see it can. Happen if you have a few years ago didn't it David Cameron left one of his children was it Nancy Cameron was left behind in the pub I think. Yesterday was a big big news at the time a prime minister I think I don't know if he was prime minister at the time whether he's just leader of the Conservative Party but he definitely left his kid behind in a pub for a few. Well that's another thing but we'll get on to that tonight tell us about your festive favorite job in film school much stronger force. I know he can google it and I'll come out later on that. Many Yes ago but the film I found about. So much show me love only ever seen it once since forgotten it also made had groaned and David Nevin and the wife called the Bishop's wife that is a very popular Christmas film Cary Grant is sort of an angel and he's yet wonderful in it and at David Nevin in the red a young are tops and that's a very popular film The Bishop's Wife it's don't show much here you know over we love it over here it's a it's a holiday perennial. Yes. That's strange how this happened it's not a good film like that which is a very festive film that sort of had no way well I'm sad not not here but we speak the same language but sometimes the English Jason American tastes are not this. But I want to show Grier you also about changing some from black and white is an absolute to sell stuff disaster a great crime when against the cinema are absent and all the lovely angles and light and artistry that goes into those beautiful black and white movie is absolutely and I have nothing against colored movies these are no course not but it was made in black and white keep it that way yeah the Bishop's wife 1947 you would you were describing how it's a the the ice skating in the film is a particular thing that you like but what I remember doing that was the thing I remembered but I think the film very Christmassy because it was bowed down of misunderstanding forgiveness reconciliation everything that we should think about this time of year. Absolutely well said exactly right and it's about all of those things beautifully done yes Anyway I'm glad you remember it's so balanced and also popular it's one of my favorites I was waiting for somebody to mention that one well I'm glad our priest through. The program actually I mean when I read that you I was asked to mention Holiday Inn Yes which is the the the film that precedes white Christmas it's the same story but it's the film in which being Crosby actually introduced white Christmas holiday and his costar was not Danny Kaye but Fred Astaire and it was 1942 black and white and it's the same story as white Christmas it was so popular that they remade it and in color in Vista Vision many people prefer the original with what's been a stare do you. I almost like the bright colors and this division of of the of the remake 154 Yeah like Christmas words from the. Number one when my son in law's mother was born she had a 75th birthday to carry to go through my family I wish him to have I don't know Christmas actually 1000 times are saying I never have the Bishop's wife however perhaps I should get them a d.v.d. But they they have white Christmas m.t.v. Yes but not holiday and. Right I want our holiday in yes or no holiday you don't actually it's really always white Christmas here on t.v. You know but I think it's because of that wonderful bright color it's it's so festive just to look at the film. Is a great cost of course terrific Richard thanks very much Citi Field Cole I think we've got time I think just for one more Steve is in Lancaster Hello there Steve the morning to you both Hi there now what you're going to face an uphill battle here Steve because you name the name your festive favorite and then tell us why you think we should all change our views on it well I like Love Actually. I like because it's got lots of Maltese Strom's in it you know there's lots of different things going on but this Christmas From been staying with Rowan Atkinson in the department store and it's a disappointment it's a Christmas gift. There's a d.v.d. Cd you know it's a lot of things going on a lot sell most of last stories running parallel with each other and I think that's what the Christmas theme is in that. And I like about film but I'm a lot but I like Ron cause Joe is reading the news tonight she's a huge fan of Love Actually So she's going to agree with you Steve Jo Jo White so why do you like you got it on d.v.d. For news and the best large school. This is b.b.c. 5 Live. With me Richard Foster until 5 now intense late night negotiations are continuing to try to break the deadlock over the Irish border issue in breaks in negotiations Tori's a mayor spoken to the Irish government the European Commission and her key allies at Westminster the Democratic Unionists that the u.p.a. Of course rejected that proposal for regulator realignment as it's now out across the Irish border earlier this week B.B.C.'s Sarah Corker is outside Downing Street for us in these very very early hours Hi there Sara. Yes hello from a very chilly Downing Street yes it was freezing good for you for staying up all night thanks very much today for that just explain what they're trying to get to the bottom of tonight with these 2. Yes Well as you say there's been intense talks and many many phone calls throughout the night both sides though with being tight lipped There is though some some cautious optimism Now this of course comes in several days after negotiations between London Brussels Dublin and Belfast and a low there's nothing official nothing has been confirmed but there are so many positive signs and the b.b.c. Understands that if a deal is reached and that is a big if plans are in place for treason may fly to Brussels later this morning to sign on the dotted line for the background to all of this as you mentioned that they need to reach an agreement on the issue of the Irish border head of a deadline on Sunday it was on Monday that the deal to resume a vital allies in Westminster refused to back that draft agreement and the may just taking points as you said is what happens to the border between northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland after Breck's it and it's understood that it dition a wording has been added to help to reassure the pay and say plans to maintain a soft Irish border could be edging closer because earlier in the week one of the key phrases that I mentioned in the link there into this was regulatory alignment that annoyed the d u p And I think the Irish government were to please with it either but then a slightly more nuanced phrase emerged as well and they were happy with it it's all in tiny little words and tiny little bits of vocabulary isnt it. Yes and we don't have any detail about what these. New terms new new agreement might be the d.p. Have remained pretty cautious they're insisting that talks are continuing and stressing that suggestions that a text had been signed off by M.P.'s but not by the d p leader Foster were not fully accurate so I think it's going to be a couple of hours yet until we get any clarity. You know what what they see green it's going to look like the have been various tweets and statements put out on social media throughout the night Gavin Barwell the number 10 chief of staff he tweeted home for 3 hours sleep then back to work so he obviously expects to be back here at Number 10 at the crack of dawn there was a more optimistic and tweet from a European Commission spokesman he said we are making progress but not fully there yet adding tonight more than efforts stage but I think what's really been space fueling this speculation that it deal may be close is that. The president of the council he'll be making a statement later this morning 6 50 am to give a further update on where we are with those negotiations so nothing confirmed but things appear to be moving in the right direction agree an agreement of course would mean that these talks can move on to the next stage discussion discussing future trading relationships or your in Downing Street life for a 24 in the morning which isn't something we normally do when up all night and it's all because of course to reason they could be leaving there in the next couple of hours we come back if she does indeed come out and say anything or get into a jog a lead for the airport. Absolutely we're watching the close. We watching the door closely for anyone that might come out between now and about 6 am so I will be poised here waiting for that Larry the number 10 Katter's been kind of coming up and down sitting on the doorstep looking incredibly relaxed through the night probably not knowing that behind closed doors things are getting quite intense with those discussions and Downing Street of not commented on suggestions that Mrs May could fly to Brussels later today to to seal the deal all with heard from Number 10 spokesperson at the moment is discussions are ongoing but it is thought that things are very very close because the tone really that is that has changed and there's optimism now whereas before they were extremely tight lipped We'll keep an eye on it Sara Corker in Downing Street thanks so much indeed for speaking to us here on plenty more on that throughout the morning here all 5 Live of course anything that does happen you'll hear it here 1st as ever now time for a look at some of the morning's front pages the Telegraph has travel chaos and power cuts as Carolina rhymes with 90 mile an hour gales that storm Caroline Of course I will not back down is the headline on the front page of The Daily Mail quoting the defense secretary Gavin Williamson who's facing some criticism it's all about a suggestion that British terrorists who fought for Islamic state should be killed when I've been speaking to Paul Gallagher from the our newspaper his paper this morning is leading on the effort to bring university play under control the vice chancellors who've seen excessive pay in many people's eyes over recent news that's not going to crack down on the universities minister Joe Johnson as out would be excessive salaries of university bosses will be brought under control in his words within weeks now this comes as the rowels 5 Chancellor pay resurfaced in recent days after that most of the leader of the u.k. Smallest university was handed more than $800000.00 pounds in a final year in office. Tressa Christina Slade has spent 5 years running past spine averse to he was handed a remuneration package worth 808000 pounds and I watering salmon it sparked fury within the higher education sector as it follows records revealing excessive salaries being joined by Vice Chancellors all over the u.k. And Mr Johnson speaking about it yesterday saying it's definitely been a problem and adding that universities now understood that they were mounting concerns among the public about whether a degree offered a value for money and under plans already cut forward universities will have to justify any salary they pay above that of the prime minister just around a $150000.00 pounds and that would go towards a newly created body called the office for students and may students no doubt welcoming this given the fact that they are the vast majority now paying over $9000.00 pounds a year in 2 Asian fees and and graduating with mounting debt and it has really been a bone of contention in recent years seen these past 6 figure sum has been handed out to vice chancellors now they would say they're not simply Vice-Chancellor anymore many many university websites are also called chief executives and as such they have to try and students from the u.k. And overseas fill those positions and. And run a sustainable university they are charities of course and many people don't want to see these kind of sums being paid and it looks like the government has listened very quickly and promising to crack down on them the unis are defending themselves in that way began you see a sort of change of era here do you think that they will actually sort of reign themselves in a bit I think they will have to I think if especially if it goes to show they're going to have to justify their so. Alaric's to an independent body I mean this vice chancellor Professor Slade she actually sat on the board of the university which decided on her own pay I think those days come to an end and of course tuitions based on the intense scrutiny after they were raised $9250.00 pounds a year and you simply can't have this ever widening gap between students becoming poorer and poorer and vice chancellors becoming ever increasingly better paid and I think those days are have come to an end now a day of rage is taking place in the Middle East and this is all of course to do with the Donald Trump's decision to name Drucilla him as the capital of Israel that's right and it mediately condemned by u.s. Allies by countries all around the world welcomed of course by Israel of Benjamin Netanyahu saying it was a key day in Israel's history but the state of race it was promised it took place lots of protests on the streets of Israel and Palestine yesterday and it ended with the Islamist group Hamas urging Palestinians to launch a new uprising against Israel a 3rd intifada in response to President drums provocative recognition of Jerusalem as its capital at least 31 people wounded by Israeli gunfire and rubber bullets according to medics Israeli military said 2 rockets have been side to Ward Israel from the how mass ruled Gaza Strip last night to cross into Israeli territory and lots of protesters throwing rocks at soldiers. Just as chanting Death to America burning the American flags and the images we've seen in the last few hours following this reversal of decades of u.s. Policy by recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel anger in the Arab world and upsetting Western allies and of course also promising to move the u.s. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Both Bill Clinton and George Bush actually also promised to do on the campaign trail never followed it through but looks like a Donald Trump has given an order to the State Department to do so and apparently could take up to 3 years will come that will see perhaps not coming to its conclusion towards the end of his 1st if it happens but all in all 24 hours of a lot of tension and some worrying scenes back in the Middle East Israel quite happy with the situation that I very much Benjamin is now going on I think is you to we get it released a video look in absolutely delighted and saying how much of an important landmark it would prove to be and. Mahmoud Abbas the Palestinian latest saying that in a single stroke the president has removed the u.s. From the mediation process but as I say Benjamin Netanyahu saying it was a historic landmark and claiming that many countries would follow the u.s. Move and that contacts were under way a lot of it did fail to name any of them and so be rather interesting if if more more countries decide to follow the u.s. In this regard. It's been a long time coming but the may just be some optimism around Briggs it that's right the dead look might be broken they go she frantically going on as we speak British an e.u. Officials expecting to work all night amid hopes the proxy deal is in sight over the future status of the Irish border and Brussels has set this deadline of Sunday night to secure an agreement on the issue ahead of next week's crucial summit of evil leaders after sort of the collapse a few days ago there's cautious optimism in London Brussels and Dublin that agreement was close at hand after the government produced fresh proposals for breaking the deadlock everyone keeping quite tight lipped at the minute Nigel Dodd's doorstep as he left the leader of the Deep in the in the Commons after he left the cabinet office a few hours ago not revealing any same a looking quite happy and Terry's amaze people saying that progress has been made she's been Pratt's for an early morning dash to Brussels if it all goes well with the handshake with Donald the head of the. Council and it could well be turning around quite quickly given how gloomy many people were 48 hours ago Reuters quoting an Irish official as saying negotiations were moving quickly and a deal was imminent but given what happened a couple of days ago I think it's going to be a case of we are believing when we when we see it and leave because also including the d.p. In this which they pointedly didn't with the 1st set of arrangements That's right do go quite extraordinary really that 3 is my presenting a deal to call younger the head of European Commission than having to dash out to make a phone call to Ali in the last of the head of the day you pay back in Northern Ireland only to be told that in sas by her over 10 M.P.'s are cropping up Theresa May. Conservative minority government at the minute so unlikely well impossible it is going to make that same mistake again and very much keeping the do you pay up to speed every step of the way this time at this early stage is there any further detail on the how different this particular arrangement might be. Not yet this is a bit nobody really briefing on any sign at the minute I think they're all want to make sure. There's no leaks and they want to actually get this deal done and signed off ahead of the e.u. Council of Ministers meeting on on Sunday so we don't know but certainly if it is going to be successful expect. It well it's going to be very difficult to keep everyone happy be instant see who has compromised and and what perhaps they're going to get in return for it in the coming days there are threats to the u.k. Recycling industry may and it's all because of China what's going on here that's why this is a China having put a ban on waste coming from the u.k. Which experts are saying puts the whole of our recycling industry at Whiskey or Chinese ban on imported plastic putting us at risk of environmental pollution because of our own recycling industries lack of capacity this is according to an investigation by Greenpeace the u.k. Exports almost 2 thirds of it traced to China and British businesses have shipped more than $2700000.00 tons of plastic waste that to China and Hong Kong since 2012 of them early next year China will ban imports of recyclable waste including mixed paper plastic bottles and $24.00 types of solid waste saying that much of the rubbish imports from the u.k. And other countries is too hazardous to recycle now the environment so Environment Secretary Michael Gove recently admitted that he did not know what the impact of the decision would be in his words he said it's something to which I'll be going. Clean honest I've not given sufficient thought he told M.P.'s and Greenpeace u.k. Have said that instead of confronting our growing problem with throwaway plastic at home we've been shipping enough to places like China where it's easier for us to ignore now at the stroke of a pen that we're not going to hell to ignore it any longer and we've got almost $3000000.00 tonnes of plastic that we're going to have to decide what to do and perhaps spend a lot of money getting a few incinerators or being able to suppose of it safely in their own backyard rather than shipping off to another country does it just it gets recycled only used in China why couldn't we do that here perhaps. It's a very very good question I mean the ban could force councils to stop collecting some plastics why waste companies are considering and incineration burying recyclable plastic waste in the land field science and one waste management company Suez told Greenpeace that the lack of any clear strategy and capacity in the national recycling industry combined with uncertainty caused by a bracket apparently and a new China bound could cause an impending crisis so we are looking at thinking caps on and work out what is actually going to be doing with all our own rubbish from the our newspapers speaking to me a little earlier about what's in his newspaper this morning well an artificial intelligence algorithm has stunned the chess world by mastering the game after just 4 hours it's called Alpha 0 it's a game playing a developed by the Google owned London company called Deep Mind it be the world's best chess computer program winning or drawing all but all of the $100.00 games they played it's got chess grandmasters hailing it is their new overlord as well deep mind hoping to now develop their algorithm to solve big health problems Joanna Bryson is an expert on artificial intelligence and an associate professor at the University of Bath I spoke to her earlier and as to just how impressive the. This feat is what's interesting is that in the previous games we've had extra information worst trip to humans of time and said Oh that was like a pretty good board or you know this is a target you should try to go towards And this case the only thing it was given was the rules and it was able to search really really really fast so I think the mind of the amazing job and of course it's not only chess one of the great things about the papers is actually solving 3 games to be as one of which I'd never heard of before but apparently Japanese Chessman had also of course go was there already known to be very good at form a nonscientific point of view and I'm pretty nonscientific being a radio broadcaster occasionally How on earth do you program a computer to learn chess that quickly and to do to solve all the situations. Right well actually in a way it's really boring Ok make your own boring little interesting. Well well the the really clever thing is. That one of the I don't know if I can even say for 1. 1 of the things I've done is that we've just gotten really really good at building really really fast computers and so it's just like it's we've gotten better at the able to work and see all the different possible chess games so this is sort of a good example of this made it easier to do what used to be called a brute force search so brute force of course you know it's like when you just you know just push harder right and improve for searches try everything and so they are trying exactly everything so there's a very clever and elegant part about how they they kind of look to see how good they seem to be doing and then they evaluate over that but by and large it's a combination of a little bit of cleverness on top of the machine learning there already doing a lot of processors although again once it's once they've learned it they can run it really efficiently so that so they're able to run the program once and once it's taught itself it could be violent one computers let's also critical and that's a big improvement over the one that they famously. Won the go championship with chess is always the one thing but as I was saying this does look like it could bring major health benefits how would it do that. Well that's an interesting question. So chances are well Ok as far as I think quickly about what I know about biology the thing about chess and go and these other kinds of games is there's only so many pieces and there's only so many places on the board so and I don't want to make it oversimplify there's actually more 35 move games of chess than are atoms in the universe so there's still a really big space to search but still this there's definitely just a certain number of pieces a certain number of places you can go and there's specific ways they move so the only way that's going to really help with medicine is possible if they're looking at things like protein folding which is for drug discovery or you know actually d.n.a. It's in some ways quite simple there's only a few letters of change so maybe there are 3rd thinking of doing things for looking for genetic diseases or things like that but the technology just lets them go really super fast at trying stuff that we don't try and over a limited search that. So yeah I would imagine that they're probably thinking of doing drug discovery because chemistry is a little bit like that. And so on how long might it be between learning chess and actually having all these potential health health problems sorted out you think. Again it's like solving some of the health problem is still pretty cool and you know I was astounded that they got from go to chess in just a month or 2 that was pretty impressive. So it depends I assume that they've got some ideas of specific problems they're going to want to solve and that they'll get again a relatively quick turnaround on solving some problems by were you know I wouldn't say don't worry about it every disease is going to be cured you know forever this this works on a specific subset of potential problems that you can have. But you know in China artificial intelligence it's an extension of our own intelligence and just means that we're going to get clever and clever so we already are solving a lot of cancers and things like that and being able to use these kinds of tools to you know to search for better solutions even faster it's only going to help us all well. I must do for you for searching for bad things of course interesting quote here John a from the English grandmaster the old chess Simon Williams He says the achievement was one for the history books he said on the 6th of December 2017 Alpha 0 took over the Chelsea chess world Alpha 0 in deep mind then went on to dominate chess eventually sold him the game and finally enslaving the human race as pets. How do you think that it what was that what I like about it is they don't say that the chess program decides and sleep people because that's not going to happen like a sellout knows about it's a small number of pieces a small number of places on a board however if you're talking about Google in Africa I mean I can go now to go if you're talking about Google and the mind well I just think we need to think about you know who at who has control of the ai who has control of our data. There are serious issues about. All of i.c.t. You know I don't not only Ai but also you know computer technology the Internet the way that we share information we share control means that we're having to work also on reinventing government figuring out how to handle the fact that you know a lot of our business is done internationally now transnationally So there's a lot of. Room for working with international organizations which of course it is quite close to one. They're trying to figure out how do you know how we're going to balance tower how are we going to balance well you know these are the kinds of things that hopefully will use our intelligence on and come up with good and fair solutions and stable solutions that could be any use and if run like you then we'll be doing a lot of hacking and other kinds of fighting China Bryson experts on also official intelligence and associate professor at the University of Bath talking about that old official intelligence algorithm which stunned the chess world by mastering the game in just 4 hours Well coming up in the next Alice thousands of people have had to leave their homes because of the wildfires spreading across millions of acres of California countryside but what about the animals I'll be speaking to the director of the shelter who's Suffice to say rather busy water in New Zealand can no longer be cool 100 percent pure will be funny or more about that and how can you make a 1000000 pounds every single month just by posting videos on youtube.
