After the death of mother Lynn and I guess then was the journalist and writer Leslie Van Jones and she said that to the start of the gamut was through Marc Bolan and he started putting on makeup and then he says producer Ted he was going to change the sound from acoustic sanding to to electric but what's the truth we're going to talk to Mark Adams now Muggs originally from Harpenden in her future they used to run the art department the 2 national newspapers that he set up the David Bowie phantom gradually got to know both he liked him and then he was face waiting Marc to to work for him full time and he still runs the official David Bowie website David Bowie dot com So Mark what do you think Marc Bolan Oh David Bowie kind of a thing if you like glam rock as hot. Generally accepted as a my own son Graham rock happened say even Barry himself questioned and he did a show a round house with a band called the hype which scientists comes here is reproduced Xerox was a member of the 8 member of the band tried a different carrot some power himself was run by a man this comes in self as hype man another's gangsta man and something else. Is at the front of the stage taking everything and. Playfully suggests that the moment but bone and thoughts and self something in that change his image so it's possible that the power also credits we really have wrists which is somebody else altogether different from the think this career was mine in the fifty's it was apparently the 1st chap to die is a grain of all colors and and. Perhaps a character or. So what about Bowie I mean he didn't really like being rocketed along the likes of Slade in the suite in mud possibly as part of damn rock I don't think he fell apart that movement particularly and that was the stronger part. So the moment people kind of look back and think Oh I think he was a bit more sauce than that and along with Roxy Music although they both had that glam look and probably carried out of the better as well compared to some of the other so-called bricklayers and make up such a sweet and Slade on the other bands you mention I think that both area. Knew that it was a transitory moments and they were both going to have longer careers if they showed it as quickly as possible which they successfully did and the likes of Poland clung on for dear life really and until he died he was still playing glam rock and had that glam not look as though in fairy had managed to shatter a lot of pretenders as well or other people across the pond like Joe Brier there was a bit of a clone but not successful and there's a whole underground scene of lamb rock records that were released at the time 45 years old g.g. Think that it will stand up like anybody even if the music isn't there and have a sniffy some of the more serious artists are about the more pop bands a even though Slade rattles and sway to Rexall all of them stand up are still great records sound very powerful today by the likes of Alice Cooper you know that some of those Alice Cooper record sound like the Sex Pistols and when you 1st hear the interest so you carried on that sound as a great sound that still sounds good and the stuff that Barry did at the time still sounds great Dave and if it was just on the way to something else with the sole thing being his next phase the government reckons except. While he was doing things that are considered glam rock acts against artist a lot in the same it's a great sound from a wonderfully colorful man and rock indeed that's Mark Adams who runs the official . Website w w w dot David Bowie dot com So interesting we're going to have a bit about Harrison self now. My next guest to talk about glam rock is Dr Simon Warner visiting research fellow in popular music studies at the University of Leeds Simon Good afternoon. My good afternoon to you I'm surprised that you don't remember glam rock 1st time around you and a teenager in the seventy's Oh I was certainly around. 70 immersed in it said Jordan. To me Ok Well we've got something in common then what do you think of the sound now you know sort of a few decades later still stand out still exciting it often is I mean I think the band rockers were really acting to rock me some becoming more serious more for the supplicant more political and they wanted to make it fun again and I think that period sort of 71 to 74 also saw that music bring a very invigorating sense of. To the to the charts so. Coming out of if you like of the the progressive heavy rock of the late sixty's and also the psychedelia movement and kind of merging some of the the riffs if you like of heavy rock with making sure that there was a little bit of a uniform and a bit more glamour to the way the pop stars look today as opposed to being long head done in clad people well that's right I mean. You know pop in the early sixty's had been very much a kind of fun teenage adolescent a fabric by the end of that decade people were coming but were becoming quite face and when individuals like you know pop not well and I know you're talking about him and David Barry and others began to bring more sort of triviality if you like more sense of entertainment to the music. The. Playing Field shifted somewhat Do you think then that it was driven after in Boden got going by record companies that they'd heard the Bowie Boland sound they'd seen the way they looked and dressed in other record. Companies encouraged other artists to get on the bandwagon you know having an image would help them to get noticed to get noticed and get them on t.v. And so on I think there was an element of that I mean the 2 artists who were sort of central to launching this work were you know were quite So the serious intense individuals who had gone through the multiple areas together they'd been rockers together you know Tyrannosaurus rex Bolen's previous incarnation the band was quite sort of repeatedly a mystical but yes they did sort of spread a sense of really and stagecraft that started it disappeared by the late sixty's and I think also. We think about those 2 individuals adding to the mix Nikki chin and Mike Chapman 2 of the songwriters who write for so many of the climb rock arses of the day should also be credit sure interesting and Slater an interesting case because they started out if you like is sort of a skinhead band. They're a skinhead following and then they sort of change this but it was only really Dave Hill the guitarist who wore makeup and looked anything like a glam rock was in it I guess so I mean if we were we we might remember that curious top hat but not the holder so. I have sort of sober this song or something like that but I think you're absolutely right that played well one heck of a. Cracking for peace group but that skinhead image when they were getting booking . To bring trouble. To the venue of the metal in the north and they sort of changed changed tack other British artists who kind of cashed in. And of said Kenny we said possibly even Steve Harvey you mentioned says he will play her soon this Alvin Stardust to change his image and his name a couple of times of course in his career and then there was mud What do you think about this time Queen and Rod c n n Jon being glam Rocker's was true they certainly kind of dressed up fairly fanboy and they didn't they and I think one of the things we should say about clam rock is that it did make sexual ambivalence. A more sort of accessible mode in popular music all of those artists now like Elton John or Freddie Mercury for example. Still has a sort of Kemp approach to life we call it many and most women I think all of them sort of felt if they could let. Let their sexuality and loose a little bit and krauts and Freddie Macare this is a very useful juncture and what about the influence of America do you think that Iggy Pop and Lou Reed and the New York Dolls and Alice Cooper doing their own thing and it just coincided with the Brits were doing or did they look at cross the pond think we'll have some of that well the Americans call this movement let's a rock they had a different name for it and the New York Dolls they were much for unsaid. Quickly crumbled 'd Alice Cooper had quite a lot of chart success in this country I feel unsafe for the American climber. Sure which was not that fairly led Alice Cooper is a very good example but others and in quickly moved on from that particular moment when our previous speaker Mark Adams who runs the website was saying that you know some of Alice Cooper's Gotye riffs sounded a bit like punk was what was coming next in the seventy's so you can see it selling from glam rock to punk I think so the Sex Pistols who were the archetype of punk rockers you know they pay credit to some of those plans they they saw in the music something grand but also humorous entertaining and so on and I think some of that is not you not external to punk by 7576 and then as you move into the eighty's Do you think people like Def Leppard old Cheap Trick and kiss and poison even Bon Jovi Twisted Sister and perhaps even the darkness later after that they all sort of look backwards and get some inspiration from glam rock glitter Oh I think what happened or what has happened post 955 is that there is in an entanglement of influences and carry overs you know you can sort of say from Rock n roll an r. And b. Through pop and beat there are elements lifted plagiarise appropriate to call it what you well and all of those bands were taking something both from happy rock progressive rock from glam rock and I think that's quite a tangle trial that makes all more interesting to look into the speaking to Dr Simon Warner visiting research fellow in popular music studies at the University of Leeds very kindly giving us his time from his home in Halifax in West Yorkshire Simon's fascinating stuff what do you think of sparks in this town a big enough for both of us it was a great record and I think we're often wrong where intriguing figures both Americans I do. Believin twin brothers they brought that sound so to Britain to make a success they in some ways sort of preceded some of the sort of electro pop that happened in the late seventy's early eighty's that they were important innovators who passed and then to us my successor. Steve Strange Of course the music producer the late Steve Strange and performer and that I guess a lot of his image to the Mayo brothers and they're still going on there not long have a new album out with this is that classic Simon thank you so much lovely to talk to you thank you Mike. This is good enough for the both the. Soul and. Music film and film school not school he's a.
