When does the season run from because obviously we're in the midst one of the busiest times of the year if you play over in England at the moment but it's the end of season over there yet when the season finishes in beginning of October it starts in April end of April is up because a win is a lot of it because of the winter so it's a really really long preseason. Games in preseason the tend to be inside. Which is normal for the Icelandic people so that took a bit getting used to but just having a pre-season run in from November all the way to well how it was just. I'm hoping that they're not as brutal as when you're on a bike over here in the sun with Nights well the mind you had last year I was working really hard from November to I'd say probably about end of February so that was tough and then Marty kind of hit it down a little bit but it was it seemed forever it was a long. What's it like going over there and trying to adapt to a new culture and everything because I can't imagine it's like anything you've seen before approvals are all Wrexham all the borer even up in Scotland in the time of night is called Like you said earlier it's completely different and the Icelandic culture is just sort of laid back that it's as if they're like they don't care. If it's brilliant is really good and one thing it is good it's really good for children right it's probably the best place you could bring children it's it's like going back to the 1950s they can just go out playing wherever they want to save the place 10 o'clock at night no you don't want to be in but you don't really care because if I have always wanted a sense I think I will forget some job still in the next hour or so yeah what about the footballing culture of it as well because obviously Iceland very much on the up in terms of a footballing nation obviously the European Championship exploits 1st ever appearance at the World Cup If you seen it on or jump in popularity since you've been over there. Not since I've been there no but the Dillard's of said over the last 3 years you know it's really got more popular. And everybody's. Football because I think ball is clogged football humble the 2 main sports. It tends to be in the summer months football in the winter months is humble Well you can get your questions into Jonathan Franks this evening and the 1st one has come in this even. A man you know very well of course. United Mark Simpson. As. Many biscuits as frankly have been with his coffee. I haven't got a coffee. I haven't got any at all Mark. Well there's a selection of virtual chocolate over there just use our producer through the glass of those the night. Raided the the Halloween section at the local supermarket so we're going to mark goldberg starting with a coffee and he can talk and shortly is the story behind that we smash in the biscuits and while your pills are no are. All cd or biscuits in twos right. That's why that's. So if the players wind you up by taking one away are something like I'll not only 10 we biscuits. Because that would happen but just my lease is following in good footsteps so because I've heard back it was quite similar with his trainers and even his fridge and everything like that so well see these obviously something that's quite common for Paul's. Routines are rituals or whatever. Just. Gets. So if you have a pocket full of change and put on. It would just be. All and heads. Got all fierce and heads up you know where it is and it's crazy little bits. Not touching each of them wrote us in a pile. On heads but that's all over lords book Mark knows all about it so that's why. I think he loves it I think you need to give us a call the see if there's a little bit Mark Johnson Frank for those in the studio between now and 9 o'clock telling us all about his or cd and of course his footballing career and like our usual 8 or 9 guest does plays d.j. For the hour and picks the songs so you've sent us a few offer and the 1st one we're going to play out is at least a case empire state of mind is there is a particular back story this r.t. Just like it. I heard it the other week and I kind of forgot about it. And I just I think it's a good song. Just like it was kind of when you published before get him there we go there. When the b.b.c. Are also telling us about where I live or why do you usually some something like this sometimes even sounds like this day in the mornings it might even sound like this why should a song like this if your age between 11 and 18 and you have a story you think. You were told to competition was. If your idea is it could be seen or heard by people. Slosh competition the competition closes in on the 26th of October. B.b.c. . Sports Extra Yes you listen to b.b.c. Sport actually Matty Nixon and Matty Johns through until 10 o'clock this evening before that was. A state of mind the 1st choice for 8 so 9 guess a scene in Jonathan Franks from a bar and how the United went forward how would you describe yourself he says he still is still playing in the general yes the attack and still not nailed down one position to. Throw over the put you fair enough Jonathan you are in the studio until 9 o'clock this evening how did all start out in footy field then was it just plain at school everything else when you picked up by middle. I was picked up when I was 11 previously I was. Stuck in town yeah yeah which were called up and unis at the time so that's where it started me. I was 9 when I went there. And then just took. Because you came through the same time as Nathan Porritt and people did I remember I remember saying when you when you 1st came through in the bar a set of young you played for England the younger levels as well and your bits and bobs about that yeah. Part of my job and it was. You know just really kicked on themselves so it's it's good to people an opportunity and what was it like coming through the set of a poor because it's renowned as an a for a grit kind of reputation there within some big names have been through there and everything you know it's really good it's well you can ask for anything better people always you don't realise how good it is to leave and you know it's not true and it's you know it's fantastic for you boy to go through that and. I am and you know just things you learn not just from football just through general life from being around the players learn from people like Dave Parnaby one born and you know really helping you grow up the the right with and do things the right way in every aspect of life really is and I was about says that what they really instill are the core values of of growing up in everything that what they're really good at Yeah yeah it's not just about the football it's about being grown up being a good human being and the way you respect people and the way you speak to people and treat people you know you can't really speak you know how I was people because that's what you know really installed here from a young age not even just when you full time from when you 1st walked through the doors the teacher the rules and regulations of the players and you got to respect it well I was just about sorry what whilst you were going through the academy and everything it was a football and here are the time I'll see as a young models were finally settled watching you know it was Janine you know love an early those type of players and then obviously when I went through in full time . Well it was all it was this was Lee Cattermole was only 2 years old I'm a buddy of he had went in the 1st team really young and we both went the same school so I was always looking up to him thinking I want to be him I want to I want to do what he's done I want to get in the business I want to get the 1st team saw as a young boy the next one in line was always Lisa looking up to him because he was in same school but if you look on a 1st team players you've always got Jeannine yours and you have analogies and then you got one box which is players like that but you know you look up to and you have lies. And I mean coming through at that time I suppose it was it was quite a difficult time to come through make your debut and everything was no well your 1st 1st 1st team appearance is the day the birth lose the Premier League status for the 1st time in what 1012 years it was very mixed emotions d.l.c. I was delighted to get the call got the call the day before the game I think my long King pulled out injured so I got a call saying you travel and sought an expectation of it but I love travelling when I was on the bench and not travelled and obviously the team got relegated but I came on and made my debut so it was kind of the best life but also very disappointing as a middle of fun and easy team going down into the Championship Yeah did you think that was at that point now where things are now going to kick on in your career now that you know it's sort of a different era at Middlesbrough they're going to be into the 2nd tier for like my mentions 10 to 11 years or so did you think that was a point where right this is my chance now I've got a grasp in next season yeah I think a lot of said it was disappointment also at the back of mind it was also a kind of this is the best opportunity going to get to really kick on and. You know got Southgate was ready to go to a member at the end of the game. Even though the team were just being relegated he came in the back of the balls to speak to me and just said look that's where you want to be you want to be in the 1st team and you know next next down and you know make sure you get in and I thought that was really good conservation He just been really good as a manager packable us to speak to your boy and tell him you know that's where you want to be no time to kick on when obviously you're playing under guard at other points I'm guessing you're probably learned bits from him train in and around the 1st team at the time as well did you ever think he'd go on and be in the manager and have the success that he has with England side no you never I don't think he ever predicted I was leaving on manager but it was his 1st job and. You know in some ways even really good and obviously some ways he was to learn and you could see he had it in him to be that good manager he was always a leader was an 11 yeah he was always a leader and he's always really good with the young boys and helping them a little bit like they're teaching how to do things right in there with respect you know news I think he's got aspects to be a really good club manager of Chinese national team coach now and he's doing really good job out there I always heard stories of from players their players that are kind of time I was remember one from a rare parlor where essent it was difficult at that time to kind of differentiate from Obviously he was one of more senior pros at the time it was hard for them to move up from him being just one of the lots to to manage Did you ever feel like that in your place always it different with you being one of the younger players it was different because I was in my last year of school so I was a full time when McLaren was the mileage and so when McLaren left that summer when there was the turnover that was when I was in full time so I didn't really know it's. A big difference I mean there's a couple of times a schoolboy had gone in full time just a couple of days here and now but you know I didn't really know it's anything but the lads did say it was strange going from Money team mates to being you to be a new manager I think the story read pallette old was calling him big noise and. I think you never played for the club again but it was a tell you is the type of crack that the hard before he was manager but I think he was wanting to come on that kind of new respect so must be difficult that's no yeah must be difficult especially to they were probably pals as well so it's probably difficult to tell you pollies he's not going to play for the club. It's just there as well it must be like it was difficult for Southcote Khanna jump into that role it must be must have been difficult for you being a young lad thrust into that sort of environment as well how did you cope with it all. I loved it I love going to the full time it was something I had my eyes on from when I was younger obviously getting told when younger that you can be going full time it's just basically when for that happen and. You know I loved every minute of it and go into training every day just to play football and not like I said not just play for Bob or just learn about you know the values of life and you know it's really good and it stands in good stead and we move on to that sort of a way yes that was good in getting your 1st team appearances under your belt. That championship campaign where Southcott been been in charge for a little bit subsequently he left his job what was that like at that moment in time do you remember it well you know remember it was after choose the game I think Darby. The one there you know would want to. I wasn't involved that game I think I was in the stand but the next morning walk up and me form was going much since I was going to go on some of these call and you know it was strange it's a bit of a surprise because we went too far off the top upon us and you know that's that's football decisions are made and you know we live and die by them really. So it was a big surprise for everybody I think and subsequently of course. It was was it God's track and it came in at the time as well and seemingly placed a lot of fish in your and what was he like with you. He was good to me it was tough for me he's always on a lot of talking about he's always shall actually do and that's. What the Scottish lads used to some I'm sick because they knew him they say look he's doing it because he likes you. So I kind of obviously listen to him but sometimes using what stop shout. Even when I've not done anything wrong is just you know just the way speaking to me. You always feel like he shouted not you but you know it was all it was all good and I listened to him and it was alright it was it was a difficult period that I'll speak in is a fund it. The club never seemed to kind of get any momentum they were expected to kind of push out of the league but it didn't feel like as is allowed in the gender . And. I'm not when he 1st came in obviously he could bring too many players in so you can of played what he ahd and you could see he wasn't happy with what he had. And then I've seen some of the big turnaround just in my opinion to do some good players who walk through the door I just think it was probably too many. From the board at the same time if Dish picked and picked one or 2 it would have been fine but I think it's probably brought in what 7 or 8 in all the same time when it didn't work interested to nor who was who do you think was the best of the Scottish players a came down because I know odd Ficker that. Was outstanding I think wast more middle refined would cheer by Robson I think he probably performed the best out of all of all of them I think even more beer played him. And Barry was you know of the really good professional and it was a good player I think one of the most unlucky ones was Kevin Thomson because before he was a really good player up at Rangers and he came in he got injured and he was playing with the Morgan leg and kept going to see people who say no it's not broken and then it was Bergen So he was really unlucky but I'd say the one who performed most was with Barry Robson definitely. A lot the Kevin Thomson was always one of those players that never really quite fulfilled his potential you know in that way you saw on the training ground Yeah but I don't think I think it was just injuries he had some terrible injuries the look and the work that one would like to see when he was playing with a broken leg you know it was on a bill cause it kept breaking down after 20 minutes every game the surgeon kept saying it's not broken but it but it will only last saw it was unlucky but he did you could see on the training produce a good football player and during that time when struck and was in charge did you ever see that as your breakthrough season into the 1st team. Question because we've got a clip of your 1st senior goal for middle's But I want to hear it on the killing for Adam Johnson Johnson that Percy Paul Johnson he played back a few yards for John the French bank shot back in the match Godspell 7 of a 2nd to join the ranks and it go by Jonathan Franks but it was Adam Johnson on the left hand side of Clare Johnson just kept the ball in there by a millimeter or 2 then he pulled it back and China than Franks smashed it hanging to the top of the net and but in the final piece seconds of the 1st type of double that advantage it stunk last year almost nil it's Middlesbrough to manage Jonathan Franks he had suspected appendicitis at the weekend priest now the pain in Doncaster side. What's it like listening to a lot listen to Bach was it strange you know it's doing Yeah I've never ever seen that call back. Until about 2 months ago and someone showed me someone sent me and I'd never seen a box and since I doubt Scott it. It was just to be honest it was just how remembered it when it was on my left ear but it is strange like listening to the commentaries and never done so it's I mean as someone who's come for the Academy is this is a sense of 11. A moment like that must be one of those where it's gone and you just totally lost your head I'm all right yeah but I remember the game I wasn't playing too well or without a bit of a slow start although we end when I think it was 4 walls That's right and I wasn't playing to well known obviously a member John I got the ball on the left and he's come back to me and I did when it went in it was just like kind of like well what do I do now we just got a 1st thing all of my life so it was it was a bit strange but you know it's the best feeling once it settles anything from what I've just thought definitely were so it was really good and I only mention that in the commentary there suspected Pender sites that must have been hard to contend with what was going on then I think we played Swanzy at home on the weekend and I had a bit of a pain in me stomach and I just played through it Trent for the Last Call it is and then. When seen the physio said go see the doctor sort of set me to do it and see the doc and he said you know gates of it was also I was like what's just like stomach cramps. Also at the Gospel stayed in overnight in agony. And then I had to wait till next morning for scans and stuff and it wasn't appendicitis solves a lot of warm but I'll say I missed the game on the sat there and then I was the game on Tuesday I don't know how I ended up starting again from the last before but right now it's recovery really you know the sounds of it. Of course part of that breakthrough season as well we've got a couple of clips lined up in terms of schools and everything so we've got them all rattled off. One that may spring to mind is a call against Plymouth You may remember some distance by the sounds of it he mentioned a stoppage time when nobody only the Plymouth goalkeepers come upon the corner right particularly a post that you don't believe goes the goalkeeper to the general you back to Chile now a penalty area McDonald Barry Robson the goalkeeper is running back to the top where long buried up some planted forward and Jonathan thank you to watch the golf actually. No 10 each stop to look going forward and John have been trying to score the go borrow he's going towards the travelling army of supporters who made this long long long journey for the rich rich reward John of the Franks has scored David stuck to was still trying to get back into his goal but composure Frank See I think produces your shoes where this is seen was reminiscent about is 3 day trip. And that was just getting to and from Plymouth to say that's a I think it was it was one of those the fun certainly enjoyed one of those goals that sticks in the memory Oh yeah definitely I think it was around my birthday weekend as well I think was a bank holiday I call them on this I always remember it it was just unbelievable I didn't plan it I was on the bench that there. I just remember the goalkeeper call it open and they had a corner I was on the far side the ball booked a body and I just made a diagonal only played me and didn't think it was going to but he did and the goal was all and so I just talked it in hawk really unlikely just went straight down the middle it's sounds like you heard Ali from the from the. Yeah moments like that I mean is that pretty much my being the 1st time you've heard those goals but how do those goals stick long in the memory for you yeah I'll never forget them never forget them there's only 3 I'll never forget. The 3rd one but they just you know that that's what you dream of as a as a kid playing for your local team and you know the law has been. The back in mind and one more thing I wanted to ask you about in terms of Korea someone mentioned to me and I remember this at the time actually you'd struggled with a back injury during a time at Middlesboro just how much did that hamper your progress whilst you were there do you think it was frustrating because I just had to break through there and I was done during the pre-season it was just 2 hours into the pre-season the macaque broke down again I don't think I've had problems for a couple of years on and off but it just got to the point where it was you know enough is enough sought a sport or a few people who said you need get just get the operations or I spoke to the manager to structure the time and he just said look globally and get yourself right muscle not back problems and no one saw it took him so odd so I was a Jew for 12 week really up and then 6 weeks in the memory up struck and resigns and then the new manager comes in and I'm on the treatment table so I think. That ducting board Wall Street where built. You know it's there are plenty time to prove myself to morrow and you know and you know he didn't even fancy me so you know I wasn't good enough and you know left what you think it was one of the reasons you think more bread and fancy at the time you know put your finger on it really I do know it all boils down to the end of the probably wasn't good enough or didn't wasn't good enough to fit in the way that he wanted to plan you know it's all about opinions and you know I'd never enough can't say I never worked hard enough because I'd definitely work hard enough and my systems got all young which it's not right you know and it was time to have me leave which to be honest was was audible was you know worst time McCreevy because that's the club I was support as a kid and I was playing for represent it and I wanted to do that for a long time and you know that that didn't happen but you know there's always comes to an end at some point when driving Franks's with those in the studio until 9 o'clock this even here on b.b.c. Tees boy extra playing d.j. Is well over the line the next segment of the Sigma. Sigma nobody to love yeah like this one to if you're going on a morning why have I like this one and you shouldn't be saying it was if you go on a run as if you know what it's all about and why he. Should still be worried about the studio. Every day. 3. Sport extra seats a sport actually with me Manny Jones and Matty Nixon as well joined in the studio by the former bar and Hartley pulling at Jonathan Franks who now has a black coffee in front of him if you mark some sense to listen in or biscuits or. Get questions into Jonathan Franks he's with us until 9 o'clock unless we go over which I can imagine we probably end up we'll doing we always tend to do that but you know moving on from Middlesborough you mentioned about how it was hard to leave the club at the end of the day going from then if you loan spells as well but you've been at permanent move was of course to help people united you know how did that problem. While I was on Lorne before the end of season long loan that you all will. With grounds each on grounds and having a really good time down there playing for your villain Neil Cooper the manager and he'd been in contact with both of us all the time we were on more now and then obviously the season finished and over the summer didn't agree anything with your Will we. They wanted Gary Johnson offered as a contract both of us mean dancing with but we blew minutes away like now we're not going to sound too far blah blah blah and then I spoke to new Cooper and once I met Neil Cooper It was a no brainer I was going to go to tally pool and what was the main reasons behind that decision then just the manager are the best in the northeast but the main reason it didn't at the time it didn't really have anything to do with being in a ne It was just purely the fact of Neil Cooper how we patrolled the club to me. Show me around the place the people in the players. Players that were there and spoke to a couple of players that were there can speak highly enough of the players for that was really why I chose to go there I guess it goes without saying as well New York it was a money to solve the mysteries Well yeah yeah yeah terrible news a lot last year I was away in Iceland when. You know it was a fantastic guy one of the lads but he's also you know you could you knew he was in charge at the same time he used the boss but you know a fantastic guy and you know my lot really because he was he got given a chance to have a hard pull and you know what articles so close to me now is fantastic club and all because of the all really yeah it was again you did such a successful spell earlier but it didn't work out for the better in that particular spell as Mind you did it. At that time it's it's started it was it was a bit of a start of a decline for the club wasn't what was it like to play. Yeah stranger is a bit of a shock to be honest because I remember the just finished finished the season our cameraman with Adam of the finished 10 for 12 but the what it of a push to the playoffs speaking to a player called Gary Little who was there and he was like Next you'll be all right we just need a settled field striker said Right Ok I saw spoke to going so you have signed guys left so he told me one minute it's a really good place then he left something and I sort of bought signed a few players and then we just had a post out of the season and from then on we were playing catch up and I don't think it was down to the players we had I think it's just once you get in that habit of losing games and games it's so hard to get out of it it's one of those things as well that converse late the habit of winning it's and it's hard to get you know be derailed often a while Yeah exactly I mean on paper we had quite a good squad in that league and we should have probably been pushing for the playoffs but like you get in the habit of losing games and. You know it's not a good habit to have so it was a tough year stranger because a couple different managers that you're. All with different philosophies but it was a good learning experience for myself and of course people united they went through you know a period of change in managers as well look you just looked after after look back at their most recent weeks as well what's that like to contend with as a player you know chopping and changing managers all the time it's not easy it's not nice. Sometimes as a player you think yeah it's probably the right decision and sometimes as a player you think we'll that's a surprise likewise that happen type thing and you disappointed. It's strange but it's the hardest thing to do is keep the dressing room together and everybody sing enough to see in the same hymn sheet type thing. And really galvanize in that direction and to push on and win games when there's no manager and that's that's a difficult part do you think that's what's happening now at the minute with with Anthony Sweeney at this moment in time yeah definitely see swinge as a player when I 1st signed and he's doing a fantastic job and would be difficult for him because obviously Craig's left and he was part of Craig's back when Seems Well you know it's difficult position for swings to be in his own ideas which he would have had anyway and so far you know he's doing really well and if he's there permanently or just temporary what every will do will always do to his best and I think Lou really good job what was the obviously you said there was a number of monitors there you look at the likes of what John Hughes was there that was fairly short lived and then calling Cooper after that. Well I'm just looking for now Paul Mowry obviously some Collins in caretaker charge a few times with it with the any kind of standouts there that you got along with most always was new Cooper the the the one the soldier the Coburn the one that you you enjoyed playing on the most. Not I got on with them all of now I don't think I've ever not got on with a manager I got on with All in all a lot actually good managers just in a different sort of where. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't like for example John Hughes the fantastic Koch fantastic guy I would probably want a best coach I worked on the but it just didn't work for him and. Maybe if you'd gone in earlier in my it comes up because he has played some good football at the time when a couple of good decent ones but it was probably too little to let. No one in the summer he wanted to make so many changes you know the board government ember all of them column got it millions was a young kid good cause good manager didn't quite work out. Several of them I think want to know probably after he. You know he's probably the best of the lot in terms of results as an e m what was what was running the like to work under because he's got a reputation with the pills funds quite a good reputation because of exploits in the great escape but he was quite I know from interviewing him at the time quite came across as quite an old school manager bought every good character as well yeah he was he was brilliant but that time not create a skit was scary as it was probably the best. Half season of my life really in terms of what we achieved and you know it was brilliant Ronnie come in and it was just something completely different something and never really out before he was you could He was so strict but he was such a character like you see there sometimes you know when he shout and scream and it you know after chuckling in the back of my phone he would just just glad he's not shout and scream you can just mean you know you know he's. Sensitive or isn't it when it is I think it's the accent I think is there but no he was fantastic and The Great Escape Like I said was probably the best 6 months of my career we had a good dressing room. And we had a few managers that season but you know a lot of moments Appollo off in the end and you know it was really and I mean I remember the scenes on the pitch member what the dressed up was that yeah that was Bob Marley that was yeah wild and he had the rustle of the rafters not on and yeah that was a long day x. The boss the team we broke down on the where Carlisle So we got there I don't think I've got the lead so the warm it was literally microwave warm up so it was out for 3 minutes back in. And then we went out and played and. Strange game 3 nil down I think hold it back 33 but I don't think anybody cared because we were what 10 points adrift What was it like with the Harley Profundis because. One thing you can't deny them is the back ins always fantastic isn't it so I mean that day in particular must have been some there kind of part about you wish you were in the stunner of them of a few beers in the afternoon Yeah that's what it's like you know now the fans are brilliant especially when they do that the last away a game the season the do to dress up so you know I think it's really really good everybody looks falter even as a player are you always intrigued to see to see what the look like and the always going to numbers and make lots of noise and it's fantastic and even on that day whether when drawn or lose and you can always see them and just as on the just have a good laugh of naging and dress and all the time but what's been your favorite costume from over the years then you remember them all. You know I can't remember. Crawling away or. What it was. Did born in the couple were painted in this because this is a famous shot I think of them all coming down and that's clearly one of the thing the Penguins one I like the Penguins one. See the Bob Marley one was probably not the best outfit but it was just a member born of Yes probably because of the season we out there was also a Smurfs costume as well wasn't there yet but here's what I think you know this is nervous is the one where there's a famous picture that was let in or in I think you had Smurfs was the year the summer before I signed so I would sound like a couple of weeks after that so I'd missed the Smurfs one by virtue everybody you speak to probably says the Smurfs was was the best one well you mentioned the fans there and what it was like and everything we've got an e-mail in from a couple out a few e-mails and actually this one 1st from Burton Pauline says hi to you Jonathan hope you enjoyed your time at Hartlepool hopefully when you read polls what type of car did you drive did you have a reading Tyria remember talking to you in the car park it pulls and we think it had a red leather interior good look in your career good to hear you aunties hope your memory serves as correctly what do you think about pills and for that one from Burton Pauline's or red lever and here is that you know. I had the courage bright red it was dark red like it was that was when I 1st science or 2012 so. Yeah she probably got right on what we've got looks like but Pauline of course. In the event of course you talked about the fans there as well you remember can you remember your 1st game of Victoria Park and what it was like stepping out from that 1st league was Swindon. And it was nil nil it was the dead boring game. But it was a point at the end of their I can't remember much about the game I can't remember whether we should have won or lost but it was a no no a lot just remember as my 1st league game my 1st game there. Might have even been medals for you know really in pre-season I mean yeah because it tends to happen doesn't it and I think the middle game was always a sudden one game write another one that tended to help in a lot yeah exactly it was a feature of emotion and dominance by 1st. They went that was the 1st game I think it was published and I think it will now as well all right and of course well we've been playing you goals out all night as well ask you about some of your famous goals over what you want to hear a few more of them is going to be massive by the. Franks edge of the penalty area tries to. Turn he tries a shot he's sharp guess. Good to get Frank sketchy 2nd goal was a comeback thanks Lazarus looks like a cheap party trick it's challenged them to follow her and I did too and franks gets a brace left hand side who gives it to any cue gives it back towards nice football here for. Thank you thank you is it to be somewhere between. My cars and joining the ranks frankly you know this is on the edge of the fog was able to get you somewhere the goalkeeper part of the United set you call them over the years clean only as far as Jonathan Frank Frank has around $25.00 yards will try short deflection. Balibo United double. Its Johnno then Frank so you try to speculate it up from $25.00 yards it took a flick of the talky captain and looped into the top left corner and the pills play a celebrate in front of those troubling funds. Referee blows his whistle Baltimore to put away a pipe on it forced Hawkins on it to the box and now look at the floor Baltimore to force lead to try to get ahead and it was an inside the box. Trying to equalize is hard to call united get a pinball book called From the man in the blue shirt headed back across called by Watson and franks coded sweetly on the Bali wrong footed Charlie Granger when it's going to the top right hand corner look at the green on John thank you for this environment in. Which it was coming to. The minute when he wanted it. You know some of those goals. Over the years never fit one particular hospital. Yeah they have a woman walking away right. 94 minutes and I think it was I think they just got to equalise and we should garden for a minute I can tell you my favorite one commented on you and it's actually still your picture on Twitter so we hope it's only where you are. I think that's me and I started commenting on. The 1st season in the National League when you came back to pills and I got to the 1st time I've ever taught the last it could go in 3 when that goal went in it was one of those where I think they scored a penalty in the 85th minute also you know like that and then this witch doctor saying yes stoppage time again wasn't it yeah remember that it was a free kick and the ball been flicked on the back and I just gambled on the back and just one of those where it looked like it was going to go in there because it because of the angle and everything else I just smashed it. I mean it was just like . A good run nothing but yeah it was you know it was really good where we there was plenty of seasons in your time at Hartlepool where you have where you've got the special moment you know you just talked about them then and of course they all kind of were in different leagues at the given time as well as any sort of particular season where you think yourself are really really enjoyed by football that year and of course you talked about your 1st season in League One being really difficult stuff and relegation is a very particular season pulls you remember really Funnily I think not a season in particular parts of season so likely the 1st year. Start off Pollie then when John Hughes came in it was a complete different style of football really enjoyed that you know 2nd you know new cookbook can't really remember much about it. It was here we went on a little go and. But it was Malia after of she of the Great Escape was. Was good and then obviously when I left and then when I came back in the National League you know when I was here for that 6 months I loved every every minute of it to be honest. Yes it is there's no real standout season I think it's part of seasons I mean when you came back obviously it was it was totally different circumstances the club are gone through a massive kind of transition in the in the just quickly as you're aware wasn't it I mean what was it like in terms of the difference between the club in the Football League and then being in the National League was it much of a difference as a player in terms of the the atmosphere around the place and everything else it was completely different because 1st of all it did move training young so they've gone from Maiden Castle gone to the old cricket ground on the front lines and had liked their own players and that was different and it was good and completely different causes of the Betty was of course and way he was previously a player but then Jenks and Craig Emerson were there. You know and to be honest it was really golden just at the big. Overall in the summer and I think that start the season poli But like I said when I'm not really good one I haven't started thinking oh we can have the playoffs and then stories can leak now about the. The money problems and stuff and I think that's when it kind of like went downhill you mean you can always been sincere we didn't let it affect it on the pitch but I think if everyone's been on for themselves if acted everybody not just the players effected everybody in a morsel people were far to pull club not not the players and coaches It was more the people who work for the club it affected and it was a tough time for everybody in the club I mean what's that like to deal with because at the end of the day you know you're you're a football player but you're still trying to make a living the same as everyone else and you're hearing things in the news about you don't know whether you're going to get paid you don't nor what the future of the court is and everything like that what's what's it like to deal with it's tough I mean it's hard going all mixed so I see it build your. Partners in. Oh we might not get paid has been flagged it doesn't go down so well so it's it's tough but it's not just obviously me it's everybody everyone's got families of the children. I think it was around Christmas time when the 1st guy coming out 7 people's panic in around Christmas. You know it's tough no matter what profession you've been whether it's football whether it's any professional working in a post office or or working in a lot will teach up if you know if you're not going to get paid all those the threats that you're not going to get paid you know it's it's a stress on any family and you know it's not nice and I wouldn't wish it upon anyone for your particular circumstances given that time as well you mentioned it was around about Christmas I think that if the club was officially prophecy for sale days before Christmas as well now you'd signed. A 6 month contract at the time wasn't it now it's on you not only you signed until January now of course there was also a lot of things that kind of thrown around ports what. Given the opportunity to sign until the end of the season what would you have done then what would you have taken though yeah I definitely would have taken it over to the end of the season the only thing is. Before Lissa come out and actually agreed to stay on I'm totally under siege you know that's a great a new contract with with Paul Watson It was bought what the players didn't or at the time but the staff and everybody knew at the time as there was a transfer embargo which eventually came out yeah. I think it was November time when I'd. Agreed to stare that I found out that it was a transfer and by then I actually couldn't really physically resign sure. I think it a little bit quiet about that but it did come out in the end that it was a transfer embargo so disappointing because we with the family had moved back home we were settled and it would have been perfect obviously clever little which is a really really good club and you know would have been ideal but there's nothing we could have done it was probably. One of the best ones you've had to play in in 6 months wasn't it you. Got the starts up in front of me 19 or 20 appearances in the league in 6 National League goals. It seemed to be work and feared so was that massively frustration as well as disappointing Yeah it was I mean it all came about it was all a big surprise as well that some of left Scotland and I didn't expect the same valley pullers just ice but Betty said when you come and train to keep fit because we were looking at going abroad that someone saw I said are coming try and keep fit and then if we called for them a whole lot and then it was I'd gone in and Jenks was that guff and after a couple of days of the try to get me to sign so I actually signed when I didn't expect to actually sign so it always just sprung upon me and I signed and I had no time to think about what it was it was it was brilliant like you said it was a really really good 6 more 34 months it was. Few goals few wins and you know it was and then that's when I kind of realized right well we don't want to move where we want to we want to stay at home and you know didn't work out like that because of the embargo also it was a sham but at the same time it was a good what was it like I want to move on to Rex and then because that was one of the spell that. Nearly a year in the end wasn't it in terms of official sign and you didn't really play it that much now I went down there. Played it at the manager Simon thinking it's just me come back he signed me played a couple of games and he left he got the ball sole job so he's left and I think desert signed That's right yeah I'd sign and sign the guy from hard to get and then so Katie had left then the system monitored stepped up to manager and made Dad's I mean the guy from hiring it just got a look and it was just can and only just sign and it was just like what we don't even like. We've Kamiya the monitors left as we're not even getting a look and so that was a tough but that was basically just counting down to the end of season that was a really tough period doing all travelling couple of times a week that was a tough period of my career really was it hard not to feel bitter about the situation then at heart it will united now of course obviously if finances can spiral out of control beyond your other people's controlled you know what I mean but did you did you ever feel a little bit bitter about what happened at Hartlepool because obviously there is no control on your part really is no no no I did I was not at the club enough and I was not was the owner at the time or whoever it was it would messed up his paperwork to force in transfer and by we don't know who was well I don't know who was. You know that really because we I was happy probably one of the happiest I've been in a few years playing football for. Doing well in the league. And it would have been really good just to get back home and settled again and you know that was kind of taken from me from the north pole of anyone really that we knew off saw it was tough and I said I want to Wrexham and that was a tough period. But no I don't hold no grudges away everybody and I just feel a little bit angry too because it could have I think it could have been a really good time for me and obviously he would have had no reason to move on as well of course you know exactly so it would have been he would have been settled for a while I would think Jonathan Franks was in the studio until 9 o'clock well probably after 9 o'clock and if you're Greece is there any longer we've got some clarification rather clarification from the people you know that official Twitter account on the on the on where the fancy dress was so it was penguins that crawly Smurfs the number one present Charlton and Thunderbirds a plumber from the bit of a there we go there we go now you know Jonathan you're playing d.j. As well of course tonight we've got a couple of tunes left I'm not sure we're going to get them both in but I want to go to years and years or anyone else. Well go for anyone else because this was. Really the story behind the after test absolutely. Extra I was. And I was with Valerie here on b.b.c. T.v. Spot I was going to say we're joined in the studio by Jonathan Franks until 9 o'clock but it's. Because he's got quite out on the kids we're going to but he's missed he's missed bedtime which is a bonus. Jonathan spoke about you time and all it will unite and everything then and moved on now to what's happened in the last last couple of years how does a move to ice and Co about then is it literally just threw an agent through contacts in in the game oh yeah well it was taught Leigh tautly out the blue when it came about season or just finished at Wrexham I think 2 weeks prior to I got a phone call. I would you would you go Iceland was like well maybe the one or so that was honest so I dare. And in the end I turn around said no no I'm going to I'm not going to go and then only the Monday I got a text saying look if you get a deal so I will you go I stand so spoke to Billy Joel and she was like well if if we can if we can get saw them all go and it was the deadline day in Iceland on the Tuesday so a lot choose there was just 200 man hours because I had to ring Wrexham I had to because my deal to end the month so I had to cancel the day I had to get clearance had to do they start the ever. So it was money but we got it done and then $2.00 days later I was flying out Iceland it was a different club to the one you just finished season that wasn't the same old same one was a yeah same club. But it was. 2 or 3 days so I went out on my own originally in the family joined me a month to month and I'm guessing deadline day over there isn't like over here with a dodgy yellow tie the glitz and glamour of the telly and everything now it's not quite like that but. Nice not it's not like England it's not really is as popular as you know so you're over there actually with a couple a lot from this part of the world What's that been like is that help kind of in terms of settling in your family circle and everything else you know I mean when I 1st went out there like I said I was on my own so there was a lot called priestly Griffis. And David Arkansas. Most people and also them too were there so they. They helped me settle in straight away when I was on my own. And then my family came out and Davies family came out so obviously his family and my family kind of got friendly out there just last year was really good Davy left. Just after Christmas and then we obviously I went back this year priest who still are.
