Eyes of a team said I will be. Check in with Abby Jew Hearst a little later on in the show to see what we've got in store for us with the weather through this Tuesday afternoon and into the wait. But you can wild and you keep me hanging on in just a moment what is going on in this weird and wonderful world of bars Well today is a very important day not because of the drama that you can expect to see in politics today but because apparently choose day is the most productive day of the week so if you've got things to get done get them done today and you should probably get them done before lunch because not only is today the most productive day of the week but the mornings on a Tuesday are the most productive time on the most productive day of the week so now's the time you got stuff to do you got to do list you like taking things off the to do list. No problem on a public transport and then else they're doing. 23. You. You. Get. To. You. Tube. Thinking about you B B C T's have you got your bell bottoms out because to far as is coming up in just a moment so we'll get a glitterball up and we'll be ready to go reminds me glitterball that you know that the launched over Strictly Come Dancing is this weekend it's this Saturday night. But I mean for me you mentioned strickly and I mediately means that Christmas is coming I mean it's September the 7th I think on on Saturday and that means Christmas is coming it's all a bit too soon mind you have you spotted how many shops have you spotted with the cards in already they seem to be all over the place across the side County Durham and North Yorkshire than at cards everywhere thanks a lot for joining me my name is Anthony Collins here through until at 12 o'clock on this choose Day morning did you know that it is National Organ Donation week are you signed up do you know what the rule changes are coming into effect next year well few of us will ever go through the trauma experienced by Lisa Wilson now her son Tom suffered a fatal head injury while playing hockey and was so badly hurt that the family had to take the just unthinkable decision to turn his life support off but Lisa's late husband Graham suggested organ donation and that's when they found out that Tom actually was already signed up to be a donor and he did that at university his organs and tissue have gone on to help up to 50 people we're going to be chatting to Lisa in just a moment but 1st take a listen to this this is when she met Gordon a man from Durham whose own life was saved after receiving Tom's heart. To sweet than listening to your son's hot button side and of the man. Lisa and Gordon have a shared bond through this heart and coincidentally a shared love of West Ham United the last time I was here when Gordon was here last year my daughter pepper and I was sitting up and we knew. I was in the crowd we hadn't met. So we knew Tom's heart was beating somewhere in the stadium and that was surreal for us. Both Tom and I. And now I sit in the stadium so we are together as one by having fun and. I feel. You know I just can't describe. What I'm seeing said. I love him and he's he's one of one of us you know. It's part of living he's killed me 2nd chance of my. Abs mazing that Tom and I. Support her so much. It is just right it felt just right when I heard the cordon was it was a supporter but when you think of. 3 Well I'm for. Really thought oh you see you know. You know I said OK. Well I have none of that around here please thank you none of that Lisa Wilson joins us now Lisa thank you. First of all listening back to that and that moment that you you met Gordon What's it like hearing that back. Actually you made me smile and you will say made me take a breath and just realize how serious this conversation is it was incredible and it was surreal that I am just thrilled that Gordon's doing so well. And that Tom was able to make that most precious gift or actually we were able to make that decision and he gave the gift and thus it is a 2nd chance in life I had no idea I didn't foresee what was going to happen when we made our decision for organ donation but having met some of Tom's recipients now it's just clear to me we did the right thing we got the gift of life one of the messages this week one of the main messages of national organ donation week is to have that conversation so obviously Was it a surprise to you that he was already signed up. Well Nancy we had conversations around the dinner table in fact would often laughed when my late husband Graham used to say give my body to medical science would laugh and say well it's not they could use or things like that and we had sort of touched on it but I was just shocked when I found out that Tom signed up on his own at 18 is a fresher not in training and he actually went up to the desk on his own and did that I just wanted to wake him up and say that was the most wonderful selfless thing you've ever done so he just made a decision for us I think we probably would have gone ahead with organ donation because my husband had mentioned it in the middle of the night but he made a decision for us so I did and home that was the best decision he's ever made in his life and the I don't think many people are are very clear on how it works at the minute so even if you are signed up to be an organ donor the family your family is still asked if they want the procedure to go ahead and even after the rule change next year when we're all going to become presumed to be on the organ donation register the family side of that is still going to be there so what was it important for you to be asked and respect their wishes and how important is it to have that conversation yes it is important to have that conversation and yes people's wishes should be respected but in 2020 when it becomes law people will know it's the norm when somebody passes away it'll become the norm that their organs can be used and they really must have had a conversation think at this point perhaps I should also share that you don't have to donate everything I mean obviously it like to Tom ticked all the boxes and everything he had was exemplary but it is all going in tissue donation so if you are really worried about something you can take a book say I don't wish this to be dated or don't wish that and you can even go back in a later date and change your decision as you become to think think about it for example the corneas I didn't have to make it is you know it sounds corny is because . It had a terrible brain hemorrhage and they couldn't be used but I was quite pleased secretly I didn't have to make a decision about corneas because I didn't know how I felt about it however now I wouldn't hesitate Why would I not want to give somebody the gift of sight so I have changed my mind now that people need to know that have these conversations and you can be a little bit cautious if you want but after all I don't know why anybody wouldn't just say everything because when you see people who are alive because a decision you make it's real really and I know no brainer I know I should use that term and I do but you must talk about it yeah yeah what Thank you very much for sharing your story with us this morning it is it still. Is it still raw for you to be able to talk about this but with a strange sense of pride as well I suppose Absolutely it is bittersweet but I just come back from the World Transplant Games where 2 and a half 1000 competitors were competing in sport because of their because of their org And because of at the Daytona families don't speak the other day to how many said I just know we made the right decision I get so much comfort such as my daughter Pippa from this especially since we lost Graham so soon after Tom but a lot of comfort we did the right thing they said thank you very much Lisa Wilson there. Take away the music baby say half past 10 good morning to you Anthony Collins with you across the side County Durham North Yorkshire Still to come on the show this some morning at some warnings about fussy eating after an incredible story about a teenager who was actually gone blind through a diet of just chips and crisps Is there anyone in your family who is a real fussy eater and won't touch certain things we'll be looking at that after 11 o'clock this morning at the minute we're talking about national organ donation week and did you know the source of presumed consent that is coming in next year we talked about it at the minute yes. To sign up to the organ donor donor registration but next year it'll be assumed presumed that you're part of it unless you actually opt out so at the minute you have to opt in but next year you'll have to opt out and N.H.S. Blood and transplant is urging people to talk about this decision with your family I spoke to Clare Willem an earlier she's the head of law change implementation at N.H.S. Blood and transplant and she explained Moore how everything is changing so at the moment we have an opt in system say you sign up to the Organ Donor Register they say yes I want to donate my organs and yet the family will still be approached at the time of donation and if you've signed on to the Organ Donor Register they will be approached and said that you have signed on to the Organ Donor Register you've made your decision and are they happy to support that but if the family say no we've got concerns then that that's the final decision we're in the process of changing the law so in spring 2020 next year in England in autumn 2020 in Scotland the law will change to an opt out basis so you will be considered to have agreed to be an organ donor unless you have opted out of the organ donor register but even when the law changes the family will still be approached about organ donation it's very important that we speak to the family to find out what your final decision was about organ donation so what we're asking people during organ donor week is to make your decision decide you want to help save others your death and recall that decision on the organ donor register and most importantly speak to your family speak to your loved ones about that decision so once the new system is in place why is the family consultation still part of it well there are lots of important reasons why we will still need to speak to the family some of them are to do with making. It's medically safe to retrieve any organs so we need to talk to the family about lifestyle you know travel history medical history that kind of thing to make sure that any donated organs would be safe to transplant but also as part of any the N.H.S. Office we involve the family we involve people in that discussion and it's duty under the change in law to make sure we know the last name decision of their loved one so it's very important that we speak to the family Salut Lee have that conversation and check that you are actually on it if you want to be on it I checked yesterday because I assumed I was on it I was sure I was on it and it turned out I wasn't so I signed up yesterday and lots of people sign up as well see organ donation when a family member is ill somebody very close to them a family friend somebody a work colleague perhaps someone that they absolutely know but can you imagine donating an organ for just just to help you don't know anyone in particular who needs your help but you just say. I've got I've got one of these would you like it and maybe someone could benefit from it that's exactly where John Purcel from red car has done so John this is amazing this is so what if you donate it I donate one of my kidneys so you've But no no particular reason other than you wanted to have one available because you understood that there was a shortage Yeah absolutely and seen a tweet about a young girl who needed a kidney and I didn't really know anything about what it was like to live with kidney disease and when I read into it and seen that people were spending multiple days per week in holiday in hospital sorry couldn't go on holiday. Tied to a hospital bed for so long it just sounded awful and for me to be walking around with despair because you can live with one quite happily like I'm proven today. And I just thought if I could give that to someone I feel really proud of myself and it would be a great thing to do and I've always given blood. Does seem like just another way to help is it unusual occurrence to do what you've done when you spoke to them they say oh we don't get many people doing this sort of thing or other more people like you than we realize no not really so I went to James Cook the salties hospitals and spoke to them and they I think they said that only had a couple of people through the previous year. But I had an e-mail of an old work colleague e-mailed me to congratulate me and he said you wanted a 1000000 and then he said actually you are because only 66 people did it last year and I was 60000000 people you will want to know you want to deliver a thought Dinora thanks very much for your e-mail it was really nice Wow So would you encourage So what is life like with what one kidney than. Anything changed for you are you on medication for life or anything no nothing's changed at all. Like a drink which is the next person I thought that would probably change. Really healthily . But I don't only want change or need to well I didn't need to make more and I can't have a high protein diet so no body building but I was never going to do it anyway right so that's the only change everything else has stayed the same Wow And then what about that knowledge Geno who you've helped Noyon you know it's a 30 year old man right so somewhere out there in the U.K. There's a 30 year old man that you've helped through this through this donation Yeah how does that make you feel knowing that it feels great the one I woke up after the surgery and I realize it's gone well that was a huge relief. Felt absolutely amazing then the following day they came through to tell me that it's been received in the recipient and it's working straight away normally DAWs is a very high success rate for that was used even more amazing feeling to know that it actually worked and it was all worth it so I don't want you know some people might be having an early lunch or they might be having a minute or anything like that so let's not get into too many details but I mean how does it work he you go in and you say Hi I've got I've got 2 kidneys they both seem to be working fine I can live with one here you have one and then what happens yeah. I had I had to the operation of the Freeman in Newcastle by all my tests on James cork. And the 1st in many a check is have you actually got to because no one probably knows right without being checked so when I went there a few times at various checks also psychological ones as well because not everyone is fit to do it might come forward and think they are but you've got to you've got to allow And some people come forward very generously but have to be rejected because. That didn't all right mentally right OK so the whole process might not be right for them yeah so then you're out you go in you wake up yeah I don't even notice anything other than I've got a scar and everything's I'm feeling OK yeah I was back at home the following day one night in hospital back a whole off work for 2 weeks and then back on after that after 6 weeks I was driving again wow amazing junk to sell. And he said you know I've got 2 kidneys and I only need one so somewhere in the world somebody could benefit from this that SOB but I think it's amazing what you've done and I hope that listening to this might encourage some other people to come forward and do something similar because you obviously like you said before it's like oh if you're proud of the fact that you've done this and you should be yeah thanks very much thank you very much and what he was just very quickly before you go what do you think about the change next year to the to the organ donation it's absolutely graph spoke to some people who said oh yeah I'm all for it but they haven't actually done anything about it so this will prompt them automatically into it so it's a great change it's a great change what do you think one triple 3 Start your message with what you think about John's done would you do something similar Have you done something similar to get in touch I'd love to hear from you you can call for free as well 080859595 This is Billy Joel and river entry on B.B.C. . You know. When he. Was. Billy Joel on the river in trains on the B.B.C. Seas high to Gavin thanks for getting in touch on social media this morning the gentleman you are talking to now is amazing this is John because Sal from Redcar who I was just been chatting to who'd made the decision to donate a kidney organ donation not to anyone in particular just in case anyone needed it he felt I could live with one he read up all about it said I could live with one so while they were down at the other or somebody might need it gabs been in touch to say he's absolutely amazing one of my one year old twins has an determined kidney failure and needs a kidney as she has 2 failed kidneys we need more people like him thank you very much I'm sure that will mean that will mean a lot to them John because so really really well the thing to do absolutely incredible. In that Middlesbrough as well thank you very much for good. In Touch I mentioned Christmas cards in shops all across the seid County Durham and North Yorkshire at the minute in Middlesborough said I can't believe you've mentioning Christmas Channel 5 will be showing all those festive films very soon already advertising a Christmas film weekend on one of its channels. It's coming. The days are coming. From strictly start to say strictly starts it makes me think Christmas is on the by Dave is here no snow on the roads at the minute I would assume they are not so it won't be long I would imagine but yeah the most we do have a problem still of course with Dixon's bank that work should be finished around Christmas so getting through all my stretchable got the delays because the road with him is to a park and then you down for the part where you live but heavy traffic and some delays at getting to the 90 now going to pull the broken down vehicle blocking a lane going through towards Levy Crescent and the mandolin to change you go to Lane One of the 3 blot on the southbound side is going slightly too much about the same trains into the open OK and it gives a coal out of 830123018 will keep in Seaside County Durham and North Yorkshire all number whose B.B.C. TESOL 7 September is a such as ever and it's free perspective He'll be live at the Great City Games in Stockton high street this Saturday from today's proud to be the official media partner of the grid City Games in Stockton B.B.C. . They would back and. Years and years coming up for you in just a moment said Tuesday morning Anthony Collins with. Saying dry mainly cloudy through the morning though there looks like we could be getting some more showers through the afternoon depending where you are across the side County Durham and North Yorkshire but I bet you her still have more in the next hour as we can find out what to expect when it comes to the weather and asked for the news today have you seen the story in the papers absolutely incredible story of this the 17 year old has basically gone blind sight loss due to fussy eating he's a teenager who would only like to eat crisps and chips and white bread and a very occasionally might have a slice of ham or a sausage test revealed he had severe vitamin deficiencies and malnutrition damage I can actually see this becoming one of those stories that parents tell kids to to get them to eat eat their vegetables Angela Beecroft is a clinical nutritionist based in stocks and this is just this is just incredible so how could this lead to something like blindness Angela. This morning. So basically. You know. Well he started essential nutrients so basically finesse holes you need to have a sponsor. And the cold essential That's because you're. Rushing to get this so without those you know your entire brain and central nervous. Your brain central nervous system are essential for so you've got 2 kilos keep your brain and all your nerves healthy right now and. Then. You got very busy household it sounds like you need so you can do you need to go on sickle No no I'm fine so OK do this but this or you just need it lots of nutrients so he needs essential Yes essential fats from a meager 3 which you find in knots and. So he simply has started to bring his optic nerve which the plies not supposed to is I So how common is this that way but with people with with fussy eating you hear some people might say Oh my child has a fussy eater but obviously it wouldn't be to this extreme but there are some people who are who are just certain textures they can't eat certain certain flavors they they just can't say how often do you come across people like this. Yet this is a very rare case actually you know we are seeing a rising lot of children and adults with a deficiency so you know the risk that the incidence of rickets is on which is clearly bone health but you know we think children who are full of empty need. So if you feed your children processed food and not you know no minerals that wasn't fruit then that's where the problem lies you know you need a you need a rainbow plate you need lots of vegetables and fruits but you know excluding diets to 2 or 3 cities lead to this tragic circumstance so if parents or grandparents or carers are there listening to this at the minute and they've got some in their house who they would class as a fussy eater just can't get them to. Eat things that they know would be good for them or what would be your your advice to them a little little and often or in introducing slowly what would it be introducing slowly ready you offer a child strength 6 or 10 times you know don't get into a food fight with them just put it on the plate put an array of love these things or fruits or vegetables on a place and just offer it frequently to them essentially Thank you Rusty get Russia's them all Chinese and if that doesn't work then just you know. We got the public nice you can easily put some spinach and things up and Huntington sources or make soup so pure right so that it is actually really easy and turns it into a game so make a plate what you got you know lots of different make it a face on a place so basically lots of different colors and coaching but you know educate children children not just tell them what's good for them what's going to make them grow what's going to make them you know do well at school and action. Is usually so educating our children who might from we know all the way up what we need to do to prevent tragic case but of course we can't we're not saying don't have your chips and don't have your Christmas 5 sleepless nights like but you know that if you have chips all the. time chips the full of how do you can rights how do you see most flotsam basically they block the done just tune of essential stunts so basic you when dope well you know chip so a counterproductive this no other at the calories them snorkel didn't frank chips keep you have the right so that's all you're a thing at then then you not going to get anything out of it yeah exactly exactly you need it rainbow coastal place all the time right and of a thank you very much i could get a very busy household there who is that through it who is that making it appear as this this is my grandson who's mean amazingly yes he's called are on right he's yeah not me how so it's that we go in she teaches babies she teaches parents how should we not short i'm with help these from that don't i start using that's what we all should be doing but you wanted to make an appearance i think he ate ever knew well play time on time all right yeah that's a it didn't want to be a laugh that thank you thank you very much angela bay graft clinical nutrition s. a Base to a in stockton years and years if you're over may this is pay be seen things the slats you know me when i try to this way cannot i don't like to be this way and miller jeff come on how he i owe me a so stop we do climb at qana hand done it now when spend in the burden on the sand i still want church There you go there I say.
