Met him for the 1st time so tossing fury up when he started it sure reside in the stars and stripes at the American flag during itself our attention so to the American public it could well be that this next stage of his career his next phase could all be in the United States building he hopes towards a rematch against the OK Wilder and he starts the 2nd round in the South Pole stance leading with the right hands and the right foot he's done that in most of his fights he's had success with it in particular early on against Vladimir Klitschko it's going to be a deposit lobby Jack going to left uppercut from fury both of them rammed home good shots from the British fighters it backs off now standing at Southport stance and this is another puzzle now a different kind of puzzle. To try to one rival a strong because it takes something from going on right before you guys on the high part of the head of the German He's taking the shots well so far but doesn't seem to have an answer in terms of response and a counter punch directly back close to the ropes not just about us here at ringside he moves to his left to the police who want to swap his corner then switch his natural movement to the right clicking out the chads that being taken on the cops by so how not to have thought the story was on the right thank you thank you thank you that's another half price point scintillating boxing from Tyson Fury the featherweights in this arena has been part of those moves and yet here I think starting 11 and swiveling around like it is on some kind of trolley brilliant work story from Tyson figuring out. What's going forward but he'll be demoralised because he thought he was mounting a successful attack and suddenly found himself been around I don't see any of an attack from fury himself that's not a right hand followed by the left uppercut Hearing run across to the far side of the ring jumps up on to the 2nd the boat right takes the acclaim of the crowd on that one might lead you to accept this yes yes there will be the snipers you cite but some so without his boss but how Hillary made it look out past which quite brilliant puffing in a 2nd round a particular picture not only because in theory he did mean something. So why not a version of the whoa that is why cycles sociopathy you'll want to statement a statement he made in the shorts isn't the same league as the other part of his face but he came game Kamal's But you know great the fence about the theory that we had to do break the program down and down his range which only stayed big the barrage of punches and Tyson Fury is still looking south and a mighty Salo fills how well they spike to so much more energy. To let go of because it and they excel he said but that was a pretty hopeful that there was some here to say good was saying you had to make a statement that he really has done and I think what a what a surprise some just because the way that he was so aggressive on some of his points on the front foot aggressive point principle but also at the news that the prince of involving the punches the rolling able comeback turning his opponent and sort of putting him in the corner so that was very impressive to see. The size of Kerry and the highlights of that really hopeful message being shown on the screen up about. The money it was misplaced because during the course of the weekend the old song times will tumble from around $60.00 to $1.00 to $7.00 to $1.00 but this was all about function theory this city of energy at the time 2 minutes 55 seconds into the numbers are free of charge to me better list upset contest he is going to find a way to knock out the assume. That just seems. Chives. So talk some theory comes to Las Vegas and produce is a stunning hopeful my say yes against Obama stepping out but it was the why he took him apart here it was the clause of the 2nd round I remember one particular move when he moves back into the corner and swivel ghostwrote who is on the attack and then at the moment showing a repeat of that particular attack as he swayed from the wise the man swivel around it was a quite brilliant move a move that many lights applied so would have been proud to Mike and on this kind of cool yes he's going to have more problems against the likes of Dion play Walter and I mean Ruiz and Anthony Joshua and a man sat alongside me just a parka but he's shown once again he is such a difficult man 10 miles down to land anything playing on their. The coach and then in between all but also the move like you said the line of fighters would defeat and I enjoyed seeing him in the movement he proceeded today you know doing that it's not easy but practice makes perfect we've seen him do it in training with numerous times when he's doing pad work and been so it's great to see that come to fruition anyway and in the end we saw that Paul Thomas was he was just a case of being in the ring with a count of our opponent and that's why the punches coming at him that he never fights people I don't think so Shorter's in a face to someone a fury but also the punches that came towards him you know other part of the space you know he was able to get victories and all the parts of being the same brothers the 1st time out of the country and you know he did his best but ultimately theory came out on top what you think the reaction to this generally will be do you think that he'll be praised for the performance or do you think that they'll be the snipers who say Well Thomas will should not be in the ring with a man of that caliber there's always going to be snipers but there's always going to be people praise and you can see that the crowd here cheering you know happy with the result happy to came out to see a good fight but a good stoppage and in terms of what Top Rank and E.S.P.N. Jointly are doing with Tyson here and this was billed as the showcase for him as part of this new deal then this will be a very impressive start to however long that journey is in person has been fantastic stuff but also it's a great welcoming fight with him here and Vegas and I believe Rusty a lot more from touch the theory that he's a lot he's got a lot more to bring a level to give today with a vision and books and it might well be yourself rising from the office you still don't see Crocker in the not too distant future what do you do to to close down the ring spices. That no shots that demonstrates that the cup of cocoa here is a type of part of the reputation down you have to put into the body fluid to get used to very high profile that are very good at avoiding punches say I think pressure combinations and bunches and you going to have to be for us to be good if you're very. I mean do you think that Tyson Fury with one more fight between here and the anti-war on that for you and I know it's a huge hike up to the anti ladder would be good enough to be wild in the ring I think that form another white in between you know and it's not just going to build his confidence and build skill work and build has you know has insurance I think that excites his wallet this is the kind of chance that he won't get. The sort of the hand raise if you can but it's going to be I want to Kerry just tell them thank you for getting today but you know you know they can do it as we saw in the 12th and final round when the floor Thyssen theory and theory somehow caught up and by the end of the contest was was putting it back on the on time well there was no it was astonishing he came back again and knocked out Iran for he was out he came back and actually put the pressure on you know on hold and it was easy I think you would have the book so to show you but focus on one thing he said you have to beat up with a baseball bat to get a model right. And this is a good time to be heavy right now with only crazy results not this or a couple of weeks ago. You're the only eventual patron and series have very much packed his picture and it's just right period critical of a given that this behavior decision is alive and well and there's a lot of the question is made for me and I will see him with very happy to be a part of this he were division of we look forward to putting some great some great into training and exciting fights in the future. Maybe 5 Live heavyweight boxing Tyson Piri being interviewed in the ring by E.S.P.N. At the moment I have been asking. For peaceful here tonight and then we'll go back to the dressing and to talk to Tyson theory later on they'll be the podcast 5 like boxing with Costello on bonds will be available in 2 or 3 hours' time as we. Just take in the result here ringside talks in Syria going to the 2nd round now because every time she's here to take the microphone it's just a song. You know what. You are. Or who I was well if American fight fans are pulling in I'll be tossing fury because of the performance there's more reason for doing so with a rendition in the direction of his wife Paris who's also in the center of the ring it would be a FIGHT NIGHT returns in theory without it was icky at the end so if it was all part of the attraction so part of the attraction. And it's great to have him back in the head with a vision that is and it's going to make elements money and part of our screens I get in the ring in the moment they left. Being raised a lot by the referee anybody who is on his left and so on says Frank Warren wasn't very British for myself and the series right arm wraps around the now give me a good figure of AS HARD AS appear on the street. Just Obama's here at ringside and I'd now like 2 rounds to the round in which it ended with just 6 seconds to goes until the end of the round and turns 31 next month now takes his record to $28.00 wins and that one single draw. Against the wall the last December. Brilliant performance by Tyson Fury of our own his promoter was telling us this week that the plan is for. Him to return to the ring possibly over on the East Coast of the United States might be at Madison Square Garden on October 5th and that will be his only appearance this year and then the plan is for the rematch against the wall that in the early part of 2020 and given the way that the on pay wall that Dominic Brazil just over a month ago in a single round and how furious on this into round. The emphasis and the impetus towards that fight is just going to fail them build over the course of the next 6 months and for you just. Making sure that you stay on the city's economy to make any mistakes kind of folks making mistakes is that it's a bit like you see it as the base has to be a heavy weight now I have to you know take the right fights at the right time get the victories and build myself towards a party for the championship of the world again. Well toss in theory being interviewed up in the ring now by the fans working for Let's listen in state toss it was it. Was. Fun I. Finally got to the net and to round 2 and I would say I switched up side Paul you know to my numbers game I'm also not so lame from south pole position I want to put on a good show you know and I got a big 6 ball 518 stone when I would put his left on and he looked good in the 1st round he was missing trying the left hand trying the right hand making you think he called me a couple shots 5 play ball as I always say you can get why not Tyson it was your last Vegas debut the atmosphere the crowd what was it like when you walked out and you said that noise when you went down to the Apollo Creed outfit it was amazing I hope it went down well in America I hope enjoyed performance you know OK made enjoy yourself but don't take it to say any such you can tell us thanks for you know take a moment people takes me seriously so Paul Paul and I will show. And upon scholarly painful now I'm here in September or so but does that fit with Eunice that is that what you ideally want even roll some time in 21st or so but then I think about in New York I'm going I'm going to fight and I'm going to hold down the entire world and it is while this on your horizon that's the man you want is that you want justice. You want justice you know I'm not the most hostile taken I was right a form of joy. You know Bob Bob I'm trying to sit down and get deals don't get me in a fight and I'm going to find your own time while going to early next year. To take Tyson to what I'm told there's going to be departing mobile Vegas parties will you as the leader just tell me what's going to be going on while we're all large enough to walk a sign off the desk for the fish off the party and I hope y'all that I know Frank's going to be that everyone's going to be NASA come down on the ball over John. Tyson theory there in good form after the fight just as he was over the course of the near 6 minutes that the contest learned if you just joined us from superiors beaten Tom Suozzi who was outcast in the end referee stopping the contest as the towel was thrown in by Shorty's going to at 2 minutes and 54 seconds of round 2 and what we've learned tonight shows the Parker is that on his debut in the United States that Tyson Fury is really going to make an impact not just with what he does in terms of his boxing but the whole character that he brings to fight we can fight now and the whole character he brings that you know he's made an impact in the U.K. You know he's go all the follow is a believer many people were flown here to see him fight but also I think from this welcoming fight in Vegas he's going to make a great impact here in America and a lot of a lot of people are drawn to him because it was so charismatic and he's he's very good with people and also the sparring story that comes with them and I think a lot of people were taking almost offense in accusing Bob Arum of close to blasphemy for saying that this man time. Inferi could have the kind of a pale of a Mohammed Ali or George Foreman But what I think of Arab was getting at was that this is somebody who brings more to the sport than just those folks in the stands he he creates interest this much why didn't the sport he says is very good at speaking as well. There's just it's more than boxing he brings a lot more. To fight nights you know and that's why you have a lot of people here we have a lot of you excited and you know we're looking forward to seeing a lot more from them this is just the beginning so you got your fight in in 2 weeks' time so give us an indication just of the way you think you are in your career now when you win on the 29th and then your imposition but how long do you think a tight shot might come given where all the time talking about 3 matches with the man who got the bells the way that I see is that I have about you know 32 or 3 fights to build myself back up to the top and I think probably the full for the fall be fighting for the title you and I like to fight the likes of doing what you get you know to get a whatever remedy for Josh Rogin but ultimately fight because of the belts because the goal is to be 2 time checkerwork or unify chipotles So you're looking at realistically is that will extend into 2021 that will and you know if they give me the courts martial or fight like I said you know I'll take in the hobby but I know where I stand at the moment I'm really rebuilding but you know I'm a lot more excited and a lot more driven and motivated as a fighter. Well let's listen in again now to the bones working here talking to Frank Warren ever inside of what he was a most vicious tonight Frank is a great complex and he said that. He felt he was trying to make why he was perfect he was punched perfect done a great job. But because the show truck I mean he stood out so we're not going to September October maybe an East Coast that was doesn't want to be perceived as some bad couple and next year Frank you heard the reaction of the crowd not just the Brits the Americans that while the fought it puts pressure Wilder now surely my kid knows the sign here everybody. Will. And so I said finally with you if I can. Give a scene you look so relaxed Was there any point to NOT as you making your way to the ring when you got in a ring when you thought you know what might have a blast of it the thoughts and I think I always come to enjoy myself. And I did you know just want to. Make you know it's possible he brought me back from the brink of defeat I was done and I. Came back big shout time. You know what I said And just finally it's a boxing fairytale where you were 161718 months ago so where we're standing now no amount of funds you're dreaming could have ever dreamt not very tail story on I'm still living the dream you know 2029 and. 21 draw I'm just over the moon you know it was a story on an on going to let you go not in Austria saying Enjoy yourself at a party. Toss Imperium Frank weren't talking in the ring to the pound Steve will be with me later to look back on the contest and the week and the occasion as a whole in the 55 boxing with prosthetic arm bands. Cast alongside me here the former W B O heavyweight champion Joseph Parker who's been as impressed as Frank Warren was there and listening to Frank Warren Joseph it's just a reminder that whoever you are whatever you get you need the right connections the people who can put everything in place you need the work connections you need the right people around you to ever take you you know not everyone can do that so he's different why and since so for you why did this isn't to join Matchroom boxing What was it about them that gave you the indication that they can put you where you want to be my contract of 2 prevents the 6 year contract finished in March and it was a 6 successful partnership and now we really accomplish a lot together the reason I wanted to sign a measure and I took a look around the world at the best promoters and I think they are the best reason I say that is because look at the fighter they put into the fight as if they have to have a big stable of his weight fighters which I would like to get my hands on and some stage a lot of those fighters but also be open to the U.K. And U.S. Markets so for me it was a was a no brainer and I'm very happy and excited to be worthwhile measure metaphor to what we can do together as a team and maybe one day we'll see you back in the U.K. Because you've heard just about the the range of experiences from a fairly quiet contest against Hewitt here in terms of the build up the contest in the aftermath when you had this massive 90000 crowd against Anthony Joshua in Cardiff and then somewhere in between on a really crazy I think we go to ring and I'm going against feeling white so. Even though you lost 2 of the finals I mean in some sense you know you've really made a statement in the you can see the thing I love about the U.K. Is that they get behind the fighters and they really support him I think they have taken myself in our team as one of the fighters and so for me these ilands. America because I train here and now the U.K. So I'm looking forward to not only fighting here in America but I'm sure there's going to be a lot will fights that we can be involved with in the U.K. So for the forseeable future you'll be faced him here trying to Kevin Barry's by Syria why straining his base here and. Vegas and I've been here for 67 years now and you know we have a great set up that works for us we've got great sparring partners that fly in and out to give us the good work that we need and I believe you know we have a lot more to bring to the Hayward division there's a lot more to do to show actually and of course now you can be billed as the only man in his professional career who's Peyton Andy Ruiz do you sense from all of you know of professional boxing that if he stays a champion for example if he was to beat Anthony Joshua in the rate match how close could you get to to that because surely he as a pro fighter and you know you as a fighting man would know this would want to remove the only player mission his career as a as I said before I would like to raise my last little bit in white and if you just feel so I think forward if you does and I get a victory of entry Josh Rogin in the rematch I know he'll want to you know to face me again it's a share on the he was the winner you know I believe I won the fight and I did enough to win all I do you know what was the providers from that time no but the father's relative other 16 now when she was a knight in I think will but improve for both bit of Buffalo but both great teams behind us what he Ruiz show you on that night and I we spoke about it briefly before the talks if you're if I got on the way but what were the qualities that made it so good because let's be fair there were those who thought Ruiz could have gotten out and. It is really showed a lot of heart and resources short of you know he's been working on his craft with his new trainers new team he showed a lot of determination I guess the 1st time he's ever been knocked down and his whole life you know inspiring to win the fight and he showed courage to get back up you know and even to your her also there's a certain lot of hard to come back in and fight back and fight hard. And to be Joshers trying to rob a McCracken was saying to me that in the field up he reckoned it would be the fastest hands dancing Jasra I faced did you find that I found I found it and to reset a lot my very fast hands not only fast but with the speed they present you know a lot of. Hellcat comes behind me. So the after Miles here at ringside there is one final fight on the card that's about to get underway after the cameras have long since stopped rolling and all the main event is in their camps have left ringside here Tyson Fury winning in the 2nd round 2 minutes and 54 seconds of the 2nd round against the overmatched Tom Schwartz who was ranked number 2 by the W B O A number 8 by the I.B.S. But Tyson Fury cleverly brilliantly systematically and clinically dismantled him over the course of the 5 minutes and 54 seconds of the contest and with that performance just a Parker I think ties in theory here can take away from his debut in Las Vegas and he's not he's there you in the. United States he's boxed in Madison Square Garden in the theater and of course in Los Angeles nasty center but he will feel this is really a job well done I think you know differently with a performance like that always be in the ring there's a different there's a job well done you know put on a great performance you had a little support here and you know he did what he had to do and get a medal. So that's about it thanks to Josie Parker enjoy your company tonight Joseph maybe do it again sometime in the future let's do it thank you for having me and I really was very thankful for the tribute to the show my thoughts and good luck around the East Coast and 2 is to thank you Chester Parker the former W B O heavyweight champion 3 times we've seen him in the U.K. Hopefully that one day and hopefully he gets back into the. Hello and welcome to 5 science from the naked scientists I'm Izzy Clarke and in this hour we're tackling the questions you've been sending in how can you remove 48 different shut and all scientists looking for alien life the naked scientists for everybody 1st let's meet the panel we've got Howard Griffiths from Cambridge University for your plant pondering Zz Howard's But Clare College Gardens are absolutely beautiful Do you have a favorite plant there yes I have a favorite John to mete Sequoia it's a relic of millenia and it was discovered in China in the 1930 S. So it's a it's a wonderful wonderful tree it's pretty massive it's about 30 metres higher Wow Next to him we've got kits Chapman from chemistry wild for your chemical queries and. Then the kids we've got Bill college who's also from Cambridge University he works on reproductive physiology said that people would see fertility and that sort of thing how did you start in that field Well I work in this field for about 10 years and I got into it just because we use my straw studies and we we made a mutant mouse and it Tom to be infertile so that got me into the area next to myself we've got bent MacAllister from the University of Western Australia who's also joined the Naked Science Team for a few months and he's had to tackle all things physics So Ben what is your earliest memory of getting involved in physics a lot of my earliest memories in general are from this really great science museum in my hometown Perth us just really that's called scientific and they have this amazing planetarium there but I spent a lot of time in as a weak child looking up at the dome in the simulated lights above that's probably amongst the earliest Now before we dive into the questions for those of you at home we've got a little Guess who quiz running through the show so will scatter clues across the hour for you to guess panelists you're welcome to join in as though he is your 1st clue number one the lifespan of a mystery guest is about 20 years and it lives in coastal areas of North America who all want. Anyone off the bat can think of anything I'm thinking is potentially some kind of large rodent just based on the fact that in South America you know 20 years out of all the images here in North America these are you know well they're very cats disregard my previous statement it sounds to me like it could be a sea mammal already living in estrus or freshwater we've got clues coming out later in the show so you have to wait and see now let's kick off with the questions here's one for you Ben This is from Dan on Twitter he says on scientists looking for alien life. I love this question the answer is a resoundingly yes we've been doing it for a very long time I mean at least as early as sort of 1900 the very early 100 and probably much earlier than that in terms of people just looking up into space and hoping that they see something but in terms of concentrated effort so using good technology it will have started around the beginning of the 1000 hundreds and really kicked into high gear in the kind of late seventy's early eighty's timeframe broadly searches for extraterrestrial intelligence as they are known fall under the umbrella term SETI S E T I perhaps you've heard of it and there's a few different institutions around the world that sort of adopt that name and use it to describe the things they do there to sort of main types of SETI search if you like the probably more traditional one is to essentially get a big radio telescope kind of like a satellite dish that you would have on the roof of your house to try and sort of point into space and pick up or radio waves coming in that could be signals from alien civilizations we humans are putting radio waves out all the time so it's not a stretch to imagine that alien civilizations might be doing something similar although there have been no detections just yet today with at least one really interesting period in 177 at the University of Ohio I believe they have this telescope called the big and it received what is widely considered to be the strongest candidate signal from space for an alien message it's called The Wild signal is basically just an extremely powerful radio signal that hit the telescope once it lasted like 70 seconds or something like that some short period of time and has never been observed again and no one's been able to explain any source for it so it's sort of widely considered to be like the best the closest thing to an alien communication we may have observed and so what people actually looking for is that you know just sick knows or is there anything more to it than OK so the ones with radio telescopes and stuff typically a looking for sort of radio waves from outer space but there there are other ways you could think about searching for extraterrestrial life and these to. Really revolve around looking for what are called Alien Mega Structures So yeah this is getting a little bit more fine but it is extremely cool so we theorize basically that any advanced civilization will constantly be increasing its demands for energy in till you reach a point where you basically require all of the energy output by a given star like L star that we orbit around the sun we don't come close to harnessing even all of the energy from it that hits the earth let alone all of the energy it puts out in all directions at all times but a super advanced alien civilization might want to do that and if they were going to do that they would want to build something that we have called a Dyson sphere which is named after this guy called Freeman Dyson he was a physicist he has nothing to do with the vacuums but that doesn't mean that you know I think that as well as like oh well but no definitely not so the idea behind a Dyson sphere is you basically create some giant structure that encapsulates a star and just like sucks all the energy out of it like an array of solar panels or something and maybe instead of having one big rigid structure you would have a whole bunch of little satellites that all but the star and rings and stuff and just absorb all the solar energy that way and then you could have it for whatever purpose you want and if that was the case you might be able to see signatures of these things like Dyson swarms they call these swarms of satellites moving around distant stars so pretty much every time we see a distant star with like a weird dimming pattern or something like this something weird about the sunlight coming off it some people get pretty excited about the fact that it might be a Dyson sphere or a Dyson swarm or something but so far there have been no confirmed reports OK Well thanks very much for that Ben now from alien life in space back down to earth he's one that came into our face that inbox and how it can help this says due to trees some water right to the top of them and how are some trees capable of supporting themselves so so high into the forest canopy Well that's a really great question and it's one that's puzzled physiologists for many years and we thing. We have an answer I mean basically we recognize that trees can be up to 120 meters high I mean that's taller than the the instant polls cathedral dome for instance and the reason that water can move up from the soil right through the trunk of the tree and then be lost through evaporation and through the leaves is because of the amazing powers of water it's got this most amazing tensile strength which which is what well it's remark were in have you noticed I was there remains a liquid exactly between North and a 100 degrees. But within that range that's basically why water supports life on Earth but it's also that hydrogen bonding which holds the water molecules together which gives it an amazing strength and then the water rises up to pillar is Juta 2 properties known as cohesion an adhesion they just sort of only a slight little chips that run up and down a tree is and they're tiny tubes that most of them are on the diameter of a human hair OK and that's the but they they are act like little Capellas they're only maybe the less than a centimeter often only a couple of millimeters in length and so water moves through those 2 peoples and you can visualize those those 2 bills there in the tissues that we call the xylem which forms the heart wood of trees and if you take a cross-section through a tree if you look through a fence post you can often see the annual rings which make up the new it increments of growth of the xylem that we get every year so the water is drawn up through that xylem held by that tensile strength and then what actually causes it to come right to the top of the tree is the dryness of the air at the surface at the top because there's such a change in energy between the free energy of water vapor and the liquid water that's been drawn up through the moist tissues that when the liquid be evaporates into the the most covetous of the leaf and then leaves the leaf to the atmosphere that draws up. More water through those microcomputer is to that site of operation within those cells of the leaves and even as a tree gets older does that process diminish you know trees of the sea can keep going for so long how can they repair that system if something were to happen so oh well that's another good question sir but partly because they grow new xylem every year a new annual rings represent the new growth and clearly some very very old trees don't make very much growth but what's been intriguing scientists over the last 20 years or so is what happens if those water columns snap and you can actually hear them clicking sometimes it's not often you see plant physiologist sort of was sticking their ear to the tree and but you can with a microphone pick up they the sound of those water column snapping and we think there are some mechanisms which may help trees and particularly shrubs and so on repair those water columns overnight how much water does a tree actually need you know if you've got your plants you go I didn't you gotta make sure I LOOK AFTER they don't die Bill how does it work for Chief well for a big tree like a big beech tree that you might see in a park they might use say something let's say 400 liters of water so if you imagine 200 large bottles of fizzy drink that's the amount of water they need every day Gosh that's a lot of an hour is a sees the amazing Well thank you saying much how it moving on kids can you help sniff out an answer to this question from your open ocean it says here how can you remove body odor from material as well you could set the material on fire that will certainly get rid of everything. But you want to keep your clothes less unlike what body odor is so your body will naturally release all kinds of secretions sweat is a great example and the natural bacteria that live on your skin and that's everyone has that is perfectly normal they will start breaking those down and release molecules that stink and they'll react with your nose senses and that's how you'll find out that you bit wifi so when things dry in new clothes what can you do. One thing is to wash them water is fantastic for getting rid of those horrible smells and also you can use a detergent and detergents are fantastically shaped molecules because they have what we call a hydrophobic tail now that means that they are essentially afraid of water Exactly so the tail is afraid of water but the head loves water so it sticks the tail in those fats it breaks things up and gets rid of them is that's how we get rid of dirt and that's why you use washing up liquid to clean your plates same kind of principle so you can get rid of stench is that way the other thing you can do is try neutralize them one thing that works very well is actually using white vinegar in a bowl of water and that will absorb the smells from the room and get in neutralize them and so why is it that combining that with warts that white vinegar gets rid of it but it's not necessarily combining it with the water it's just get making sure that the white vinegar is actually sort of going around the room essentially it's because of an acid base reaction is very very basic sort of chemistry speaking a basic chemistry another thing and other brands are available but for breeze is a great example of how you can actually trap these smells so for brains has a structure in it called a psycho dextrin and that's shaped like a donut is the big hole in the middle it's a sort of a circular molecule and what it will do is it will get those molecules in there that causing the horrible smells inside that circle and trap them you can't smell it and the molecules are still there but the beer is gone although you've got a question yeah I know some people use Sodium Bicarbonate to put in the microwave to relate smells how does that work we're going exactly the same kind of you as the vinegar as a sudden but kind of an It is a great version of the base and it will cause that same kind of reaction so it depends really what smells are as to how you get rid of them but certain bicarbonate fantastic for cleaning products and these things are really really cheap but everyone thinks that you need to go for really expensive cleaning products actually one vinegar so did the carbonate things that we've used for over 100 years now are just terrific Well absolutely no excuses then now Bill actually we've got a question from Lindsay on the form about 30 and compatibility she says I have had . Theory that some couples are incompatible so individually they offer but can't produce offspring with one person whereas they could if they had a different partner is is that tree occasionally this does happen I think one of the reasons is that fertile ety can be affected by a huge range of different factors so you might have a couple where they're both slightly subverting all so that together that's a compound problem they can't conceive and then if they split up and they find another partner the new partner is completely fertile and they're subverted Lety isn't such a such a problem so that's one of the possible reasons Another reason is that in very rare conditions maybe about 4 percent of the time it is known that a woman can make antibodies that will specifically recognise the partner's sperm so they make antibodies which are released into the vagina when they they have sex they the sperm are attacked by the antibodies and it causes the sperm to clump and coagulate and that prevents the sperm from reaching the egg and so essentially they are rejecting it they are rejecting it yes I mean I don't think that they have been primed against it or anything like that it's just that there's this in compatibility which is unfortunate for that particular couple what there be anything to get around that issue oh yes there are ways of getting around that if that is the problem you can obviously take the egg from the woman and you can fertilize it using in vitro fertilization in a dish and then you can take the fertilized egg and you can implanted back in the woman that means that there's no antibodies in the in the dish so it should work fine and kids did you have a question yeah I'm just curious as to whether or not that someone will be attacked approach attacking every sperm or is it just a specific person sperm or is it a specific group of people sperm. It's related to a person's sperm so if they have this problem that they make antibodies against a particular sperm it'll be all of the sperm from that person and it necessarily won't be from another person so it's not selective it'll be all of the sperm that are attacked. How important are hormones when it comes to fertility. Hormones are very important in fertility so in males for example testosterone is absolutely crucial for fertile ety when you go through puberty your testosterone level rises and that's required to start making sperm at puberty and anything that reduces your testosterone after puberty is going to impact on your ability to to make sperm and there are lots of lots of things that that could impact on your testosterone levels one thing is that if you are overweight and you have a lot of fat tissue then testosterone is like a fairly good likes Lippitt switch fat tissue is it will tend to get sequestered into the fat tissue which can result in lower levels of testosterone in the bloodstream which can have an effect on how well you make sperm I see now how would how about plants I mean what the time is how many seeds a plant makes Oh well it's not a big Yes Well it depends whether what sort of flower it makes sometimes plants make a single flower they have a kind of a determinant structures they're there what we call their interest and sometimes when they start flowering at the bottom and they just keep flying like wallflowers at the moment they just that's called indeterminate so they can have lots and lots of seed production Pods and so on that's partly the condition it also depends on whether they've got enough water nutrients so plants can adjust their structure the number of branches they might have the number and size of the flowers they have if they've got plenty of resources and that's all controlled by the similar substances to the animal hormones we call them plant residences and then finally he decides whether they need to allocate reproductive effort into seeds or sometimes you might have other storage organs so take the potato for instance we know that they store a lot of resources on the ground because they reproduce from not vegetative structure it depends really how you're going to produce your generation in the following year. Whether it's from a seed or whether it's from a vegetative structure thanks very much how it's we've also got a game of guess here running through the show you 1st we had the our mystery guest has a life span of about 20 years and lives in coastal areas of North America and clue to is that adults eat crickets ants small beetles grasshoppers and spiders What do you think of the we will reveal everything later on Now usually we talk about misconceptions on the show you say this is common myths that can be debunked by science on our lovely panel have brought in their I mean we have them so let's start with you Ben what are you putting on the table right mine is actually more of a science history myth than a science myth itself I figured given that I'm here to represent the physical sciences I might confront a common myth about one of the most famous physicists of all time you may have heard the idea that Albert Einstein supposedly failed some math tests in school or maybe it was in university or something and yeah that's not really true he was something of an unconventional student there is a bit of truth in that he didn't get along well with his teaches he didn't like the way things were normally taught he had a tendency to sort of not pay attention in school but all signs point to him doing math quite well at all times which probably makes a fair amount of sense if you think about the great he went on to have but the sort of Origin Of The myth is that when he did try to get into university he did fail his entrance exams but it was not because he failed the math section it was because he failed the botany zoo all A-G. And language sections so perhaps some of your panel could have helped him out there but yes in the mean to he was alone and do we know what sort of came from or is it just one of those and that's just floating about yeah I think it probably just spawned out of that the fact that somebody read somewhere what he found as entrance exams at the university and then wanted to create some kind of pseudo inspirational myth you know which is human it's a nice story is that Albert Einstein one of the great if it's modern failed is not so if you've got a math you might be good later I guess is the message I don't know but yeah. Yeah if anything went on to be a very very important person for the world of physics and math OK so how is what you've written down is a misconception OK what really gets me wild is when I hear regularly on T.V. And radio programs that the rain forests are the lungs of the earth Now don't get me wrong I think trees are absolutely vital I want to plant more trees I want to stop people cutting down forests because forests are absorbing carbon they're protecting us against climate change but when that phrase is used it's often used to infer that the oxygen we breathe is being produced at this minute by the forests and what you've got to remember that forests are really giant compost heaps there's as much rotting degrading and material just being response and consuming oxygen as there are in the photosynthetic leaves above which are producing oxygen so there's a roughly a net balance OK so where do you know where the majority of our oxygen comes from well it did come from plants it's come from plants both in the marine system and on land over the last 2400000000 years and gradually organic carbon made by plant has been buried either underground in the in the sediments turned into rocks and so on and that's trapped carbon some of it's turned into fossil fuels which of course were not burning and releasing but C O 2 back to get this fear but that's where the carbon went and that allowed the oxygen to gradually increase in the atmosphere thanks very much how it now kid what he pretty dam is and gets and you know of this myth that you can't turn lead into gold you absolutely can do that you don't want to do that but you can do it how would you do that well in 1918 there was a very famous chemist called Glen Siebel and he was a nuclear chemist and what he did was he got a particle accelerator and he fired carbon and neon atoms. At a piece of lead and chipped off some protons and protons decide what element you have and he bashed it way back down into gold right why don't we all trying to make gold then this is the problem so have to fire up a particle accelerator is a bit expensive it cost him around $120000.00 a day to do a wow it's a he worked out that to make one ounce of gold would cost $1.00 quadrillion dollars . Come on guys we can for that done together doing something we could scale as well I mean maybe it cost that much today but we'll put that down in time if we get it if it fails how about you well this is a sort of myth that I'd like to debunk which is aimed at couples that are trying to conceive and people are told that if you're trying to conceive there's a there's a window of which is the best time around the time violation for the woman and if you having sex around that time you should have intervals you should have sex every other day and it was thought that this is to allow the sperm to build back up to increase your chance of conception and actually it's completely not true the best way to conceived during this window of the window of opportunity is to have sex as often as you can provided you're up to it of course and the reason that we now know that it's best to just have sex frequently comes from I.D.F. Clinics where men have gone in they've given a sperm sample and then they've taken another sperm sample 2 hours later and often the 2nd sperm sample has more sperm than the 1st so basically you can just have sex as often as you want during this this fertile period and that will improve your chances of conception do you know why that happens that you know a few hours later there is a high a fantastic Well we make a lot of sperm very very rapidly and I think that you know we're making 5000 sperm every 2nd as we just well we are afraid that I'm certain animate in 5000 sperm or so every 2nd so we're making me. Of sperm over a few hours and I think what happens is that the 1st time you make sperm this there may be some there that has been sitting around for a while whereas 2 hours later it's sort of fresh stuff so they're much more Verrall and much more potent we talk about this of the lation period the golden opportunities 6 or so days a month can a woman get pregnant outside of that period. So there is a reproductive window during which a female is likely to get pregnant and it lasts for about 6 days the reason it has such a short window during the whole of the cycle is that an egg zone a viable for about 12 to 24 hours once it's released sperm cells repeat more robust they can be viable in the reproductive track for up to 5 days so if you put those 2 together you've got a window of about 6 days when you're more likely to conceive and outside this window your Ultimately much less likely to conceive and women often use this natural sort of rhythm method to monitor when they're going to obvious late and to make sure that they don't have sex close to that period is a reliable method of contraception it's not the most reliable method of contraception I think if you use that method you have to be prepared for failure some of the time there are more reliable methods that's all we've got time for this week but it's Before we go we've got some big news you might have had to claim in space no one can hear you scream Well we're going to test that it's we're sending a helium balloon to the edge of space that 120000 feet up which is carrying some kit that we've built to place screams at a mechanically de-coupled microphone and will record what that microphone measures but we need your screens to get involved simply record your best scream and e-mail it over to 5 Live Science at B.B.C. T S Good morning it's Sunday the 16th of June I'm Mike Hill these the latest news headlines at 6 o'clock protest leaders in Hong Kong have called for a big turnout at a rally today despite the government's decision to suspend plans to allow extradition to mainland China activists are urging for Hong Kong's chief executive Kerry to resign our reporter Hellyeah Chung has been speaking to some of them full protest as they say that's not enough because they want the bill to be withdrawn completely and I spoke to about 10 different student protesters yesterday and they all said that while they saw this as a small step this wasn't enough and they were all planning to take to the streets today now there might be fewer people with them before and it's always hard to tell with these things but we know that the sense of urgency has gone now that the government is temporarily pausing that 5 of the 6 remaining candidates to hunt down the W.B.C.
