It's not something you've always wanted to do that I'm assuming no it's dropped I'll be quite by accident it was suggested a better year ago by a friend of mine who's also an army a regular army chaplain that I might consider offering my myself and the Royal Army chaplains Department felt that chaplaincy was the best route for me so Cleveland were without a partner a so. You know any more there you go we're going to learn more about that with Rob in January because Gary Phillips and coming out to do a nice long chat with us and he is indeed he's quite excited about it is not quite so excited a little bit more worried about what he's going to be doing get sent to Mathias himself tonight oh speaking with that Gary on Friday because you've got a very special carol service taking place I tell us about this year is. Our 25th anniversary as a parish Hemington And so we've pushed the boat out for our candlelight carol service which is at 6 o'clock this evening it sent to Mrs parish church in the center in Hemington And so we thought we'd invite a celebrity guest so we can get one of them so we thought we'd get Gary Sick a letter instead so Gary's coming to read one of the lessons amongst others that is good and indeed he might well amuse people tonight I think he's got a couple of jokes lined up hopefully couple of clean jokes I have to say because he was telling me on Friday that most of his jokes well. Let's just say they might go go down interestingly in a church on the Sunday meeting before Christmas but Gary looking forward to that he's coming along tonight. That happening again that's 6 o'clock this evening 6 o'clock if you want to get along to that at St Timothy's It's a lovely church I came along for Mothering Sunday that I like yes you did last year when Archbishop Center who was alongside you that's right he brings in all the stars to do try to rob that what is it like then being a vicar in the run up to Christmas Well you know it is absolutely manic there's the old Joe they could just works on Sunday but when she get into December it's just full on really and this last week really it's the final sprint need a lot of energy is quite long hours as you can imagine ending at around about 2 o'clock in the morning on Christmas one how after midnight mass it goes on till 2 o'clock Well no that's service. Doesn't mean the clearing up and getting ready for the next day does oh i should he much and it is a really nice time to be a vicar that it is it's one of my highlights I always enjoy the festivals Easter and Christmas and Advent sees the run up to Christmas since image is we've got something going on every single Sunday during Advent in the run up set to help prepare people for for the big day itself you know because I suppose I mean I heard about what the organizations like a place like Durham Cathedral in December and it's almost like a military operation if you can draw the analogy because you've got to draw everything together and people want to be in there all the time what's it like with the congregations or because there is that old joke of course that suddenly on Christmas Eve at 1130 Eastern you find yourself with a full church and then a couple of Sundays later you down to about 5 or 6 regulars is it really like that yeah I think it is you do get people that will come particularly for the festivals which is which is great and one of the great things about being a parish church is that you don't just serve the people that attend every every week but you would you serve the entire community and it's great to give the local community an opportunity to come together to share worship to sing carols and just to have a good time in church which is what it's all about all we do losing the sense of the Christmas because I was reading the other day service and that vast majority of us couldn't retell the Christmas story the proper or the real one if we had to so if we're losing a little bit of that we might be and I think it's good that we should maybe take some stock and think what Christmas is really all about. But yeah but people still have that understanding that Christmas is about Jesus it's not just about Father Christmas and it's great to welcome people into church particularly the seedling for our carol service which is the traditional 9 lessons and carols will sing all of the favorites and we will tell the Christmas story through the Bible readings and the poems and of course the words. Of the carols that we know and love and for a wider perspective is it good that we have this particular festival to celebrate because it really is to use an Andy Williams for it's the most wonderful time of the year isn't it yeah it is. Certainly not an Oliver Cromwell found down in heaven into any band Christmas famously during the period of the Commonwealth. I just drove it underground but Christmas really is a wonderful time of the year and it's wonderful to be able to bring people together in celebration is often the time when people reunite with friends and family that they haven't seen for a long time so yeah it's great it certainly is right of course today a lot of people out shopping so. You'll want to know if there's anything to avoid out on the road today Derek Webster is the man who can tell you morning Derek. Good morning Mike Well as far as roadworks and such a concerned nothing too much to worry about today and everything's very much as normal in fact many of the roadworks have been suspended for the Christmas period which is good of course the only problem I would say This Morning News is be careful for that splashy water here in the especially on the roads today it has been raining quite heavily in places so it could be some standing surface water Don't be the 1st to find it 1st thing this morning and abusing the trains just looking at the trains across the area business as usual today whatever that means seem to be running well though some of that we've more in half an hour and the updates haven't the mean time to call is 301230181 thanks very much Terry yes should be a normal Sunday service on the buses and the trains today course gets a little bit more complicated for the rest of the week but we'll keep you updated on that course Santa is with Mike Parr on B.B.C. Teas as well a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The mince pies are out your. Christmas from B.B.C. Say. It's 25 past 7 now on Thursday a new bishop of Jarrow designate was announced the announcement was made by Downing Street on Thursday morning announcing that the next bishop of Jarrow destiny is the venerable Canon SARAH CLARKE currently Archdeacon of Nottingham in the diocese of civil and not in a well Sarah came up to our part of the world on Thursday amid a way around she was seen she was hoping Kate said she was in Harley pull she was there I think in Bishop Portland and we caught up with her in Easington Colliery our reporter Philippa going or went along that to meet us. At Easington probably to find out a little bit more about her at the moment I'm the archdeacon of Nasim I live just outside of Nasim but the Originally I'm from South Wales valleys so you did mention before but when he 1st came to the northeast in you you visit a decent and I'd come to look around to the whole of the diocese to drive from the time to the t's and from the sea to the Dales to get a feel of the diocese and when I stop to have a walk and I walk to the top of. 10 and saw the cages and as the monuments at the top fits I found myself he quite overwhelmed with emotion because it reminded me so clearly of where I grew up in the South Wales Valley which is an ex mining area my grandfathers were both miners my father was a miner in his twenty's for I.C.I. And I was brought up somewhere just like this and it just looks like it as well except for the sea I didn't see the sea where I was in Wales to have any of the connections to the region My recollection is really through St Cuthbert's and through the the saints of the north so for 5 years ago for my 3 months off I was Cuthbert's way on my own carrying my own things and and reading and reading really on the story of the Northern Saints and how they came to be with the people and and clearly finished within the cathedral with Cuthbert's tomb and also with beads too so I think that there is such a rich spiritual heritage here that I see myself coming to work with what's already here not bringing that with me because you've so much already so why did you want the job. Well your you don't apply for Bishop's jobs you're invited but when I was invited and I saw the row that they wanted I had a real sense of yes I could see myself doing that and that's the 1st step I think as well so there are a number of things One is that I'm going to be the person the bishop who looks after vocations especially vocations to ordained ministry and I'm really passionate about seeing people come from all different communities to be able to serve God both as clergy but also in all manner of things in life as well because I think everybody has a gift that God has given to them that we need to draw out so that was really exciting and we're also working with this model of resourcing churches resource churches who are growing to help other places other churches to grow and be able to serve the communities in which they're set and they also knew that there were some really great things which are already happening within this diocese so placed on the move that I could come and be part of within there and and with Paul Butler as well and with pro the he has so that was really important to me what can you do for the church in the north east what I can do for the church you know see so what I bring which is part of my own story is a story of the God Who chance forms lives the stories of God who can take the lives that we have and shows us how much we are loved and gives us a purpose within the world in which was set so I'm coming really to fan the flames of hope and to give Cove confidence as much as I can to the churches to Christians and to communities to believe that we can be transformative and within the place resets that the vision of this diocese is blessing our communities in the name of Jesus the transformation of a Saul and we're going from this point to Hartley pool to sing to agents with them with the soup kitchen they're using as well and what I'm also passionate about is the church being involved in its community enabling people who are struggling to actually get out. Some of the struggles they're in and helping them to a better life and that was servant of all kind and SARAH CLARKE The Bishop of Jarrow definite Sarah will be formally consecrated as bishop by the Archbishop of York at 10 am on the 27th of February next year in New York Minster and she'll then before me welcome to the Diocese of dorm in a service at a welcome in Durham Cathedral during a setting of even song on the 7th of empathy battle but obviously be a Sunday at 3 30 pm and we hope to get into B.B.C. T.V. Set some point 22019 as well. I don't know likely combinations to Terri will go to alledge Jones and that take on a beautiful Christmas song silver bells. Who is sometimes favorite singer. Christmas message to say to all those people who are unfortunately spending Christmas alone all those that will be spending the festive period living on the streets that you know all in his thoughts impress. Everyone he says and look after each other that's for. Sure thank you so much for that. Christmas message very shortly for ever and rubbed Essex I'm looking forward to that beautiful Carol with it as well that's coming up after because it's getting closer. Leona Lewis and one more sleep well just to boss leaps actually but you get the drift 890 minutes to 8 on this Christmas Sunday this Sunday before Christmas and time I thought for a very special thought With Christmas just 2 days ago so my special guest this morning Reverend Rob Essex office his thoughts now as we prepare for Christmas just 2 days away. I wonder what the highlight of your Christmas is the bit you look forward to the most perhaps it's the opening of the presence or perhaps the veritable feast of Christmas dinner or maybe even watching the general misery of the Christmas episode of East Enders for me the highlight is 11 pm on Christmas Eve because that's the time when I'm at church and I've just finished getting everything ready for midnight mass at 11 pm on Christmas Eve I usually just sit for a few minutes in church and survey the beauty of the flower arrangements the elegance of the Christmas crib and I try to remember what Christmas is really all about because it's about God's son Jesus coming to live amongst us as a human being. You know in all the busy ness of the Christmas season we can so often forget the real meaning of Christmas we can be so caught up in all the present buying the food preparation the tree decorating and of course the Christmas parties that we forget the person whose birth we are meant to be celebrating I think so often we kind of gate crash Christmas a bit like how some people might get a crash any other party without much thought for the person whose party it is at 11 o'clock on Christmas Eve in the stillness of that moment in my church I like to remember that without Christ there would be no Christmas without Christ there would be no presents no feast no joy no party one of my favorite Christmas carols is a little town of Bethlehem in that Carol we sing these words yet in the wide dark streets shine if the everlasting light the hopes and fears of all the years are met in the tonight. In the often deep darkness of the world God sent His Son to be the light of the world a light which shines in the darkness and which the darkness can never overcome Jesus' mission was to shine the light of God and dispel all the darkness from the world he came to give his life as a ransom for many and in the manger bed in the Person of the Christ child we see the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world Jesus came into the world to calm our fears and to give us hope we all have our fears fears for the present and fears for the future and we all have our hopes as well but Jesus gives us the most blessid of all hopes the hope of eternal life with him in the glory of the kingdom of heaven in Jesus all our hopes and fears are contained and he gives us the true and lasting joy of His peace so can I encourage you this Christmas amidst all the frantic activity of the season to find a quiet space just for a few minutes and remember the one whose birth we are celebrating cast or your hopes and fears on to him because he cares deeply for you and ask Jesus to fill you with his joy and his peace as by the wonderful light of his presence He dispels the power of darkness from all our lives. Cheese breakfast just after $10.00 to $8.00 well I might be dreaming of a white Christmas but somebody who can shatter the history. Yeah good morning it's not gonna be a white Christmas I'm afraid but you know the reality of it is actually not loads of people travelling around over the next few days so what good would snow yeah it would cause more problems than it was worth for many people I know I know that not a SO GOOD GOD WHAT place what what can you promises over the coming week I can promise some quiet weather over the Christmas period which is good isn't it but it is going to be quite cloudy so well if you've been at a dry weather but a bit of cloud a mist so not not white gray but anyway as for today it's quite in Saturday's now as we get going and the some heavy and persistent rain moving out towards the north and east a will move off in the afternoon but it's going to drag its heels so a quite an unsettled start the day mist in America around a thing once the rain moves off it's going to stay quite cloudy highs about 7 Celsius maybe not to not become a C. Drive with a lot of cloud but some breaks in the cloud some place spells allowing temperatures a bit lower down to about minus one minus 2 Celsius I think even out tonight so widespread frost as we start the day tomorrow be much colder there will be a few areas the mist and fog around 1st thing but I think these a lift and we will again see some breaks in the clouds so some good spells of sunshine Christmas Eve highs just 6 Celsius though so chilly feeding day Christmas Day will be a bit milder but cloudy patchy mist and some drizzle as well as some hill fog a lot of dry weather it is hard to get a state fairly overcast but it's a. Say it looks very very similar there will be missed in some part I think that may well linger through the whole day especially over the hills so no white Christmas more gray Christmas but a lot of dry weather just a lot of cloud to go with it OK I'll dream of a great Christmas Abbey I was I was looking online yes I see your colleague Keeley Donovan has been rappin her presence in old magazines recycling Christmas cards for gifts you all ready for Christmas I'm by day yeah I mean I haven't been quiet why is friendly is that I think I have wrapped her in just traditional wrapping paper but yes I'm old and I'm just dead the tree is looking fabulous and I am so excited she to give to get some more presents this year I feel like I've done quite well oh you see that's the spirit to be at this time of year where. I'll try not to forget to wish you a Merry Christmas in an hour's time but I wish you a Merry Christmas now just just to be on the safe side that's lovely Yeah well Merry Christmas to you as well just in case you forget but I will speak to you in an hour that's pretty it thanks a lot I'll be do Hearst there with the weather today so I'm going to fight and sing this. Dreaming of a group Christmas don't work as it. Is all wrapped up like a big present Christmas Day morning like film on B.B.C. T.V. . It's 6 minutes to 7 sorry 6 minutes to 8 o'clock on this Sunday before Christmas now of course the meant story making the news last night and making the front page of the papers this morning is the news of the death of the former Liberal Democrat leader Lord Ashdown has died at the age of 77 senior politicians have been remembering him No Paddy Ashdown led the party for more than a decade from 988-2999 is credited with making it a significant political force the party's current leaders have been. Cable said it was a hugely sad day he had great and he was the out of them energy optimism drives he was very much Mr Action Man you know the style that the acquired in the military he carried into politics very effectively and he did great things for our party he doubled our number of M.P.'s I was one of them and benefited from that and he really established those as a major force in British politics a Conservative M.P. Colonel Bob Stewart was a UN commander serving in Bosnia when he became a friend of Lord Ashdown when he turned up pic of its mate to take him to the front lines I wasn't allowed to take anyone to the frontline star generals were meant to go to the front lines he was clearly confident of had He's on the front lines but on the way back I think great explosions occurred right in front about it was a waterfall Patty was standing in the back and I thought that's it that does it that's all I want to be reported to have taken to the front line which on the 6 o'clock is Lord Ashdown was diagnosed with bladder counts here in October in law David staler another former leader at the Liberal Party recalls his last conversation with Paddy Ashdown the last time I spoke to my favorite just to see weeks back that was about the book he was writing it was he was starting to carve out a new career as a really very interesting author on books really to do with the 2nd World War I. Look at it and France where of course he had a holiday house and Tim Farron another former leader of the party said the Paddy Ashdown was a different type of politician he wasn't somebody who was stuck in the rarefied atmosphere Westminster and he was an irregular extraordinary who was also an ordinary person Heinz self and he fell in always count passion but people were during his time as the UN's administrator in Boston every force through major political economic and security reforms and helped build up Bosnia state in. Situations Now speech become to be just and well be has said Lord Ashdown served the people of the Balkans with passion and inspiration was an agent of reconciliation and I had the pleasure of meeting Lord our stone a few years ago he was doing a book signing too I asked if he would mind coming in to be was he said no problem at all came in without the usual P.R. Assistance and what have you he was a gentleman personified he said Right we can talk about whatever you want I'll answer any questions he came up we sat in the studio and to show the market began showing to Defra has said Lord Ashdown he said Mike Mike none of that nonsense he said it's just Paddy please just Patty he was a lovely gentleman and he'll be sadly missed it's P.C.T.'s breakfast on this Sunday before Christmas our carols for Christmas is on Christmas Day 6 am in the morning 7 pm at night one of the people performing is the lovely Abbey Alton she'll be performing this.
