Post Malone and circles 20 to 12 down the pike on this Friday morning this is our movie time of the week talking about the new releases which are out free to Cooper and no more of your comedy with us today so doing something slightly different this morning but before we get into that one of the big releases this weekend is last Christmas we spoke about this on the show in the last couple of weeks this is the romantic comedy that features the music of George Michael and wham it's not wham or George Michael story it's just one of those films where the songs would appear in appropriate places I think there's 3 wham songs in there and a dozen or so George Michael chains but the 2 characters in it Kate Emilia Clarke and Tom Henry Golding and so this movie is set at Christmas 2 years ago 2017 and being a rom com Of course they have to go ice skating which fortunately Henry Golding was well prepared for a group and sorry the closest thing that you could do like on a Sunday or Saturday was go down to Guilford spectrum which was the ice skating rink and they would have these ice skating discos for on the Internet team and see it's not sensible I think we treated sort of like there was a McDonald's or something nearby and there would be cold fries and like us to cheeseburger to just pretty much what we could afford that's exactly socially it was those skills that came forward with me with my life and I was able to put them on the farm so there was the only thing that I could see him either on bikes he killed me on the saying in the ice skating I was you know it's amazing the way skate this his peak was not created to balance on ice. But it doesn't sound like he grew up in sorry anymore to. See Henry Golding and Emilia Clarke there who play Kate and Tom in last Christmas out the data when you see him skating at all because he learnt at the spectrum in Guilford as a state that's the big film for this weekend but the Brighton Film Festival Sydney city is on now and continues until Sunday and I'm delighted that Tim Brown the co-director of the Brighton Film Festival joins me in the studio to talk about some of those maybe not quite so big films but perhaps more interesting hello to him Hello Danny how long's this 1st when running Well we started in 2003 services the 17th annual edition and what are you trying to achieve the festival like this because we know about Cannes that's a great showpiece for all the big glitzy films what are you doing here well we're basically trying to give the audience in Brighton and the surrounding area more choice so sort of by definition I guess a lot of the films we show are smaller in the sense that they're generally not Hollywood releases so it and our tagline is adventures in world cinema so it is it is does what it says on the 10 his cinema from around the world but also with the best of British and British sort of cream of new filmmaking talent from this country and there are some big hitters as well by directors that people would have heard off Ok because that's the thing at the end the day a film doesn't need a massive budget or massive special effects it can be really effective if it's a great story well told absolutely it's all about the ideas and it's all about I think new voices and just having you know new stories on screen that's that's the thing that matters I have to say I love Rosie Baldwins film about Stelter 7 which we heard about earlier in the program that the band from the spawn who are you know have challenges of their own in life they had to deal with the suicide of one of their mentors and all that because Rosie was making the film was told and she put it together beautifully and it was a wonderful film so look it was lovely to see that on Tuesday you still got tonight tomorrow Sunday to do. So I just thought if you could run through some of the highlights of what you've got we can go and see this week here right well this evening we got a very special form called rocks as directed by Sarah Gavron Sarah directed suffragette Brick Lane which I think some of your listeners probably saw and it's a standout trait of teenage female friendship is brilliantly review 5 star reviews wherever it's played it doesn't actually get released in this country until April the 24th so we've got a special one off preview this evening at the Duke of York's house part of the festival so that's one of the exciting things about the fest was being up to see a film like that on the big screen almost 6 months ahead of it actually going on release so it's sort of pre there there isn't even trailers or posters for it yet because it's so far ahead of its release and so what in terms of for the filmmakers does that give them an idea of how an audience reacts to a film absolutely I think of the festivals like Cannes and the big in the street events are very very important for filmmakers and for films the films get bought and sold but Cam is an industry event so it is only when you see your film with an audience that you really understand how it plays what works what the responses and rocks is is a beautiful film it's lovely for our times I mean it is very joyful and resilient and it's just very humane so it is about a group of teenage girls and their relationship. They take a day trip to the Sussex of us Nies It's always nice to see our part of the world on screen there in the 70s London and there's that thing of coming to the sea for the seaside for a day out and every so excited to go on there isn't there yet what would be the future for this film do you think that would get a kind of sort of multiplex type release when it comes out all that again play in places like Duke of York's in the picture houses when it comes here more art house cinema. Picture House but I think a title like that it would play a little bit the multiplexes I would expect it to be it's anyone and Odeon brightness Well that's rocks at the Duke of York's tonight's gives something else what to borrow this is sort of a bit of a British said my weekend ready so there's 2 particular titles we got a lovely film called Perfect 10 which is playing a chicks a comedian on Saturday afternoon at 345 and this is an interesting one of the deputy feature from the moderate to quote Eva Riley and it's about an aspiring teenage gymnasts and the way that her world is turned upside down with the arrival of a half brother she never knew she had. A particular interest is a Debbie feature. And it's we shown Eva's films in the past so the documentary 7 documentary mentioned. We have a strand of the festival each year which is for open submissions so we're local filmmakers to make their work and we selectively get shown a. Over the years as submitted her short films to Sin City would be delighted to screen those and then a few years back 3 or 4 years ago she had a short that was in Cannes so selected from about $10000.00 short films from around the world so and she managed to get a short film called Patriot into into canon and this is a Debbie feature so we sort of worked with Eva over the years it's one of the satisfying things with the festival that we can sort of form these relationships with different directors and then see how their career develops so where just really excited to be a to present her to be featured on the big screen and it's also it's brilliantly played have is well primarily the London Film Festival last month it's incredibly short for deputy and it has what really distinguishes the area I mean there is a a low budget film it's a small film if you like a coming of age story but what really makes a standout is the excellent performances from the lead Gio there's the 2 teenagers and they are just absolutely stunning and again. It's a very it's a very heartwarming very humane it's a believable family twist as well isn't it a half brother who suddenly arrives and so that and the main character a teenage gymnast It's called Perfect $103.00 films so far we've spoke about the ones that you saw and which I mentioned earlier 3 female directors exactly I think is really important one of the things we try and do is in the city I think half the program is. To does feature dark features directed by female directors and there's also about 50 percent program is Debbie film so I think it's just really important . We'll see opening closing close the festival with with bigger titles we opened with the lighthouse we close on Sunday with. Jo Jo rabbit from Tyco i.t.t. So they're they're big highly anticipated films and they sold out you know just like that but I think it's really really important 1st of all does if it's doing its job properly it is shining a spotlight on on other areas of filmmaking and his giving an opportunity for people who Debbie films have their films on the on the big screen for the 1st time of course it's hugely important just to in terms of diversifying the number of stories out there it's just really important to have equal representation of female directors to Ok here's another film we've got. Days of the Bagnall summer which plays Yorks on Saturday afternoon now this is another. Feature directed by Simon Bird who was in between as and it's never member which one Simon Bird is he that's a very good you know he's there he's the main He's the main character yes I did and they I can picture I can picture him yet in my mind they confuse medium between yes we know his name and tell us about this from days of back not summer days of the yes the back not summer it's. It's a lovely film as a comedy is written by Simon bird's wife Lisa. It's about a mother played by Monica Dolan and her son is played by Earl cave. And it's just a lovely heartwarming comedy it's got a great list of British comedy talent so it also features raw bride Alice Lowe Tamzin Greg there's lots of familiar faces and again this is a preview some way ahead of release it doesn't get a release until I think some point in the new year and it's a comedy as well so it's nice to have some some lighter fare on offer I've been told he was we'll in imitating Is that where I got a picture of my now so yeah so Simon Bird film and then give us another little treat the end Ok one Sunday where the atom resent for the creative arts which was the venue for last night's a c b C's Question Time of course lovely venue and went there on Sunday with 44 screenings all told but the day kicks off with a phone call passions and rituals which is made by Bryan bass filmmaker Livia Eames and it's a documentary about Cuban musician who also lives in Brighton Marietta view and. It's a lovely documentary about her recording an album and then going back to home and in Cuba to perform the music for the 1st time America is going to give a short piano performance after the film's well hand there's a q. And a. At everything in there isn't a performance and he may well call it an end date indeed but one of the choice though and must be a real thrill to see these directors coming through and the 1st audience reaction to a lot of these for exactly a year no it's that is the most exciting things you're seeing there with an audience and watching the film on the big screen and then being at home the chance to talk about it and discuss it afterwards Sidney dash City dot co dot u.k. The website for details of the remaining screening. As for this year's Bond Film Festival Tim Brown thanks for coming in thank you very much good to see you. See And I want to know what love is. One thing. That spoils your area a bit that you'd like to see sorted mine is abandoned bikes lying around Bryce and we sent our reporter Steve Bell for a walk around town and it didn't take him long to find one that's going to vary rusty frame from time but wheels are severely buckled massively buckled what it does it advertises the bicycle as supposedly being abandoned when it's not and since then there's been 3 separate occasions to front they went missing then a couple of days later the back wheel went missing and then a week after that someone took a seat thank you for getting in touch about those little things that really spoil where you live road traffic. Which I'm sure you will have so many grown. Up quite like. People the commercial vehicle. House in office or a drug they want on the corner of a junction and their. Commercial Vehicle died on it we paid. Public. But at least there was some good news when it came to the bikes could you have a little blitz before Christmas Absolutely I mean certainly in terms of what I said earlier you know we do rely on people telling us so so the fact you've mentioned there's one on the corner then just around the corner and up across the road there's 2 bikes which have probably bent out of shape there nobody's bikes you could go there take them away today and nobody would know which side there was never been sorted by the way mention tree stumps as well a nice full and so we holding the them Council there to account getting those tree stumps removed hopefully they'll come back to that next week. Uses next I'll see tomorrow morning at 9 have a good afternoon. Listen Sussex. Was. Good afternoon it's 12 o'clock am Emily Jeffrey Labor has promised to give every home and business in the u.k. Free full fiber broadband by 2030 if it wins the general election at a campaign event in Lancaster Jeremy Corbyn said the move would boost productivity bring half a 1000000 people back into the workforce and help the environment by reducing the need for commuting Boris Johnson said the plan which would be paid for by a tax on technology companies was a crackpot scheme Boris Johnson has dismissed as nonsense claims that senior bricks at party figures have been offered perishes in exchange for standing down as candidates in the general election Nigel Farrar says he was offered a seat in the House of Lords but Mr Johnson insisted the conservatives didn't do you deal saying it wasn't the way the party operated the bank's it Party m.e.p. The Police Federation in sorry says investigations into the actions of office is a taking too long leaving them feeling stressed and devalued the sorry branch chair is calling for time limits for complaints inquiries but the independent office the police conduct has revealed that it's now completing 90 percent of investigations in sorry within 12 months its regional director Sarah Green says if police officers don't cooperate it slows them down and takes a very long time to arrange interviews with witnesses if they get a no comment responses even though there are only witnesses this doesn't help us in terms of gathering evidence since we become the I o.
