Judy tonight it's just coming up to quarter past a lot of messages about Gap years tonight Dave says never mind a gap year early retirement will be more appealing there's just the small matter of affording it are yes he says I'd start by walking the leads livable Liverpool Canal very nice to nice seeing now day that's put me in mind would it be lovely just to go on a canal boat for a year you know just gently meandering the canals and you know the lovely poll says not quite a get p. About long vacation as an the 1st year at least Liverpool uni I worked 3 months at summer camp in the USA brilliant could have stayed on as a teacher in high school but came home to finish my teacher training probably a bad choice as poll now oh come on I bet you had a fine time Paul thank you for the email Georgie at b.b.c. Talk show The u.k. Yes we are exploring the idea of a grown up gap year or guard p.r. . Alan and Stephanie Rima investors have done just that you know they've written a book about it as well Alan joins me now hello Alan Hello there Georgina tell me what spawns the decision to take the gap year when will. We decided to take all gap year just like university students do however we were 60 at the challenge and it was one of those opportunities to have an adventure but it was born out of a bit of a difficult time because I was made redundant from a job I had at that particular moment in time Goodness me how how did that make you feel I mean that must of been quite difficult Well I attended a team meeting in Cambridge and in the team meeting it was announced that government cutbacks closure and so on it was a bit of a depressing hour. But I drove home and at the end of that drive an hour and a half later I had gotten to grips with the idea I'm one of those people I always think from problems come opportunities and by the time I got home that day I'd figured out my opportunities and how easy was it convince her indoors that this was the opportunity you were going to grab where. That was another issue entirely. We went to sleep that night and I was dreaming of sunny climes and. Sailing in the Mediterranean I think Stephanie was dreaming about our forthcoming poverty and the old. I mean we both laugh about this now but we did have quite a different attitude towards it yes so you just drags her along with you which is great isn't it you know in this to need just to be each other on how good was it to plan how hard was it to plan to plan it was very difficult at the outset we drew up a list of things that we might do the sort of possibilities charity were overseas teaching conservation projects. And we came up with all sorts of ideas I'm the one that we both agreed on which was to don't work a winter season in a mountain ski result. Ones we've agreed on also to Sam was really trying to get all foot in the door of one type a you're going to do a chalet thing you're going to and you're right oh brilliant but of course all they want a 19 year old Shelley go. Yeah and so that was a massive obstacle to overcome and we applied to $43.00 different companies and they all turned down or didn't reply to our applications to them and we knew all we wanted was one interview if we could sit in front of somebody we could convince them yeah when application number 40 people rang up and they said to my name for an interview we knew we would go to preserve what they were we were very excited even before we arrived that one day for an interview so what did you end up we ended up in the French Alps. In a region called the 3 Valleys led 12 l.a. Though I'm a way to obfuscate it myself and in a result go marry by oh well I'm married Val It was so exciting we couldn't believe it Jim and we ended up with a picture books Alpine chalet to manage for the following 6 months total for goodness and waking up to views of the mountains every single day we were lucky how how big will you'll get the number of guests in your chalet Who did you just only accommodated 12 about rather stretched to 14 but that was plenty so 12 that breakfast did you do often in tea the last minute. The idea and demand an evening meal as well fantastic how much skiing did you gain most afternoons we got a chance to go skiing but none of those we got a day off each week it was hard work Georgie Yeah However the benefits definitely exceeded the cost and the other thing is you having lived a life and looked out of your own home you know. I think it's about cleaning and that was you know you get you get these young ones and it's kind of a quick flip around but I can imagine you was definitely a rather thorough cleaning from where I know Stephanie was a great cook yet again with me and I knew I could vacuum vacuum a floor as well as any man. So we decided upon that combination and it worked very well indeed do you think you will have how far do you think you had a different experience at your age in your sixty's to someone who's actually done this in their early teens early twenty's I've got to say a tall rage it was such a different experience and we came home refreshed renewed a clearer vision of the future and we had a whole raft of brand new memories to rely on the way you away for a year I know you did the ski season but then did you go and do some of season I know we were actually away for 6 months but it took it took 6 months to prepare to go with that and not a now life I mean I've mentioned you've written a book is in the publishing one well the book is called the great gap year and it is available on Amazon now have a go but I was motivated to write about our adventures Yeah big cause of that experience of being oldies in that world of youngsters I want to pay you know what are the youngsters think of you sort of bowling up on their patch. It was rather strange they kind of looked at those with suspicious side why are they and what are they up to the but it was quite hilarious too because when the youngsters couldn't get out of bed in the morning we were always up front and ready to work you know weekly when they a time when we all attended a team briefing they'd arrived bleary eyed staring out of the window. Stephanie and I were always there with pen and paper ready to take notes completely. But you really are excited the young ones didn't show. Them the senior managers nicknamed as of the rock of the Mary Bell team Reserve. Was a fantastic accolade Now obviously you're not doing gap years how is it how is life panning out in terms of. Radically we would have done a 2nd gap here. And gone back to Mary Bell however our daughter in law on Sun had our 1st grandchild and we knew that was coming along she was coming along early fab and not just change decisions and timely So now you're looking after. That does keep us busy part time. Listen. You give my regards to Stephanie I will and I think it's such a wonderful thing and if anybody's thinking about. To everybody tonight where would you go when you've got you what would you say to someone thinking about. Rage in an older age if somebody is thinking about doing anything different Go for it don't hesitate try it out that's what I would definitely say Alan thanks so much for coming on the show Alan rim from Les It took a gap year with his wife Stephanie and. This is Elton John and. I mean. You're probably going to. I'm ready to go easy from Sam Cooke and the classic Donna's right to the 1st last and everything to choice and tonight Michael in Cheshire is going to be choosing. To not get me is and this is coming from Skip in Sheffield and Skip says my gap year would be in New York New York what a great place to start scripts as a few weeks there and then a heart then heart and motorbike travel east to west liking it take a month or 2 then same in Canada and then motor home around New Zealand you've got to you've got to book it you've got a book it's get there's no one no 2 ways about it sounds brilliant Nicky from Norfolk has called the show and says I'd like to do the United Kingdom and Southern Ireland I haven't seen enough of my own country and it's a beautiful place and Mickey I was thinking the same thing and in fact I just thought u.k. But yeah I've never been to Ireland so that would be part of that clearly I'd love to do that wouldn't I yeah if anything for a Guinness Nicky thank you for the call tonight 034531858 when you call when you text like skips down tonight one triple 3 star that message with the word Georgie Let's go to the phones now Cheryl's waiting in the wings Cheryl. If you find down there in August I think it was I've been there you know. This is amazing so what prompted the gap here then although it was look my husband's mother passed away last year and so we had to come back and fill up the house and all of that. Whereas in a. Husband sort of so well will use this year and he retired and I shall go back. But we thought well why not take a year out and come back and enjoy the country Richie came from it's been lovely Oh God I love wonderful I mean a lot of Australians take a year out because they're so far away and the jobs I held I can for them and you as you say you're going to go back to work when you get back where else are you going to go Well we've been to York we have been cups Scotland we've been up to London a few times and just just driving from here to Brighton quite frequently all been lovely lovely and all the country pubs but also because you know your 1st venture we've sort of tried to do a few little trips over to Europe so we've done Paris today I mean train. Can have a can leave town Yeah so we've we've done hate absolute hates it's been wonderful this Obama when does the year run out when have you got to go back oh the 23rd year law gosh it's a long way off oh it is generally really so far yeah and you get no no right miles away from home he's not driving you mad is a no no he's actually very well through it always been brilliant.
