That's. A summary no on Friday but if you move that that one and the and the following game so their bit of a question mark in terms of the time span but he looks like he can be out for a couple of games for the singles with a groin injury so that's been a bit of a blow so I think that was probably the one everyone was focused on quite interesting is. We actually had an album limited since front end there needs departure we have discussed it but he comes off the bench in schools after 3 minutes for a mania So I mean it just typical isn't it really was it left us with any of our possible injuries to trust or possible absence and you know and then is now go or something changes the manager's thinking and yeah I think he but he is a very flexible manager and I think he's got that ability to change it where we might see. And Aaron Kollie teaming up in a slightly different role that they try to Bristol Rovers obviously Neil Mowbray I think is the likely to sort of be the spearhead as it were particularly stretching Bernier the weekend hopefully but he's got the option of pushing March into a further forward role Pascoe Gross's they played really well against Watford So I think he's got some but when we talk about it before the podcast is if you get a couple of injuries and or suspension as well does that leave them a little bit exposed in there we desperately hoping that you know that a lot of these players don't come back for the likes of Duffy's in action tonight. I mean problems come through he could 90 minutes yesterday for the for Netherlands after their game against Germany last week so he looks like he's going to be OK But you know they don't want any more because you know there is if you think concerns if that were to happen now we had some fun. Saturday looking at asking fans to sum up 4 games for points on the grand part so we had some sensational stuff and thank you all for them so 3 words to sum up that period let's look at some positives and your improved improving improvement Dale moving forward together like that one she USA Keep it up deserve more points America absolutely spot on many would argue that one not so. Positive J.B. Show much more enjoyable evolving ambitious happy that's Alastair Adams given time like that one and Nick time will tell so this is very positive and some logical ones that absolutely are not can't disagree with many of them really it's the performance against the result and that word happy I think is in there as well I certainly felt that the last home game that was I didn't see the fans after Manchester City's trip the trip to Muncie city but I did feel there was still an air of optimism despite the fact that they lost and they were down to 10 men of course often they don't need record so I think there is a case of optimism positivity but obviously it's about results as well in the manager did say that in his post match you know I don't think anyone expects them to get anything from plaudits from that performance but you know I think when you look at the batch of pictures that are coming up of the are some crucial ones Burley home Newcastle away an Aga be Chelsea away in the Premier League as well as we're not far on all cylinders yet under Frank Lampard there's opportunities and they need to sort of keep up you know the pace with picking up points and that's just that little bit in the lower trepidation maybe in the back of the fans' mind you feel that sort of we hope in good style of play but actually we need to stay up as well you know spawn a lot reflecting that boulder is another relegation battle and you must take chances Simon don't take chances not good enough says Ralph same oh really says Neil and doing a series of you that were. Bang on about the not taking a chance is issue and one thing that I thought both when we talk about Leander he's got into those positions be has been able to take them hopefully other people can but they do need to start scoring goals or anywhere on the pitch to about the defenders everyone needs to start controlling because they get in the chances they get in position nearly 50 percent against Manchester City who would have thought that they've got to take a chance that's the one thing that probably is outstanding on the outstanding list of Mr Potter's page at the moment that's what fans things I say I know you. Having a look outside of the clubhouse one of the sections or out around to for guidance Yeah sure I've been speaking to a friend of the podcast makes a panicked football journalist and Albion fan as well to gauge the media reaction but also get his own thoughts on the season so far well very encouraging. In everything possibly apart from results I mean he started with a bang with a 3 mil. And then it's got progressively worse by the performances haven't the performances of pretty much stayed stayed right up there so seeming that you know we will get the reward that the teams entitle to I think you know the season the certainly looks as if it's going to be interesting I think we got a sort of taste for what sort of football he was going to play you know in the pre-season friendly particularly. Against Birmingham and Palencia and you thought well you know OK it's great to be Valencia but it's a pre-season friendly and we'll be able to keep that sort of approach up you know in the face of the Premier League but then we certainly got the answer to that one 3rd so I think everyone's very pleased the other thing I think a lot of the look of is having Aaron Connelly in the in the in the matchday score and moving on and he's actually teach some of the young players I mean we've heard that about him from his season at Swansea he'd been kind of cautious when I spoke to him inside Well you know Premier League a slightly different but is he stayed true true to those beliefs and I think that's another encouraging sign and in terms of the interest because of those beliefs in the way he wants to play the game it feels like there's just a little bit more interest in the Albion and that's not to decry anything that Chris unit chief while at the club but you talk about the different style but that does seem to be more of an interest particularly in the younger coach whether it may be on a slightly different level with you know Frank lamppost even general but also with the likes of grandpas are coming through and being introduced into the system as well yes. And with him being English as well you know that. When I was doing a little bit of research into a mud speak to a colleague at a well known Red Top Piper who'd interviewed him when he was swans the manager and he actually said he you know he saw him as a possible England manager one day and I'm really surprised that so word around but that's the sort of the level that certain people been speaking about him and those he was down Ashworth who'd had spotted him as you know as a manager who played the sort of football that the fans and presumably Albion hierarchy would like to see. It's an interesting one because as we know members of our noble profession that space into those who do their homework and those who wing it slightly and there's a preseason writings were people saying oh look you know well I've brought in sacked a great manager like Chris Hughton in the replaced with a guy you only finished mid table it's Wednesday whereas you know that other people knew his work at Austin's and realize that he has finished Swans he was miraculous bearing in mind the number of players they've been forced to shed off the relegation so I think some people thought what a bright doing others were thinking Well Brian of certainly you know going for one of the most promising up and coming managers around you know who's he who's going to possibly do something different on the Chris Hughton situation and we all love Chris here and we all will love Chris utan But no it's with a certain amount of cynicism the most people in the last season was saying Albrighton you know they placed stultifying and the football and then the soonest Christine was sacked is how can you sack a great manager like Chris Hughton and replace him with a nobody you know but this is some afraid. You know clubs outside the M 25 and and outside mention of a pro often. The level of ignorance about them so we say and this is true it can be true that the fans know more about what's going on in a club than. Certain people who write for some of the Nationals you know who don't watch them particularly often and I know that top 6 interest is always there I think it's interesting grandpa's back story I think does add a little bit of extra interest as well but I mean you quite often you know especially last season used to assess what the media was saying what he made I mean if anything there was a bit of delight and interest in how they go on against what for but also huge admiration from prep Guardiola for their performance among just to see despite the score on it and that seemed to dominate a lot of the media coverage produce an essential part of the media coverage just in the evening it was and actually he sort of set that up in his pre-match press conference because you know wall of the press possibly hadn't noticed. But the Potter revolution Guardiola certainly had you know and he'd said you know don't expect Brian to come in and sit back you know in with a look of 10 you know they'll they'll attack us and so there were one or 2 things in the previews that sort of suggested that Guardiola had to have seen what was going on down here but yes. I kind of go back to my you know nobody knows what's going on outside Manchester and London Guardiola had said it then people sat up and took notice there was one or 2 some more cynical people saying well you know they lost 4 nil whatever they said Mitt it's very easy for you know some like Guardiola price someone when they've just been them and wouldn't brighten fans be here rather it would rather he was moaning after a Goldstraw well. Possibly No I think possibly Albion fans are taking the long view and they liked to have a sort of confirmation from one of the top managers in the game that run the playing the right way and you know that there was so many other good things to be taken from that game I mean the social media clip of than Burns control and Sergio Aguero high 5 a game afterwards you know that sort of thing is a sort of thing that fans like to say you know about their club but yeah I know it is interesting to to know the. How little usually is mentioned about the Albion in those in those press round ups when they're playing one of the toms toxics is usually all about the big club but this time there was plenty of good stuff written about the Albion that was quotable obviously eaten by the fans and how they now appreciate 7 different style I'm a progressive style but Aussie they enjoy getting good results and when you look on pay even though it's a been lean You can also Chelsea to come a lot of people we asked people to describe the season so far in 3 words and will prove so if they deserve more points or you need more points so it's it is about performance but it's also about results the managers reiterated that as well and it be interesting to see how the coverage continues going forward depending on how the results go yeah they definitely will I think if you look at the games dispassionately 4 points in the 1st 2 games that's that's fair enough the Southampton game was you know it was changed by the end only sending off so early. And. Uncharacteristic error by Shane Duffy before that transfer scareder how much that contributed to him being rested managed a city or possibly that was just a question of you know the style of the team that we were playing against and that's definitely a part of whole Mark you know that he will he will change teams to fit the opposition rather than yes sending his best 11 out but I think when you know you then think Well Man City away you know did anyone really expect us to get anything from that so I think the disappointment in those in those 4 games was a salad one simply because even down to 10 men are think there were points in that game for the Albion and it was. Some some poor defending by 2 or 3 players that led to their 1st goal and then of course after that you know the 2nd goal and I think we can't because we were chasing in the last 5 minutes and you know it still could have got something so if I were to ask you the nick to describe the season so far your thoughts in 3 words for the season I know it's only 4 games but or in a way how you feeling this stage going into the next sort of batch of matches and what would you go for from that point of view potentially very exciting. I like it nurse good I think that reflects some a fair view there's a lot divided actually some people say you know not taking Joneses not things like that but then the some people say you know this looks exciting this could be good just given time those sort of things so it's sort of not polarizing people but I think people soar see the potential but obviously you know there's always that element of of trepidation as well well they always say don't look at the table until you know there's 10 games when played and if when one of 125 percent of your games have been against Manchester City you know I think you have your results are going to going to be slightly skewed maybe you're hearing this again I said you know when one draw one defeats yeah maybe we should do this again in 10 games time a thing for you know it is it's interesting you know this season you know promises certain changes I've covered to Chelsea games this season both at Stamford Bridge and both ending in draws you know so when we're talking about the big 6 I mean are you begin to wonder whether Chelsea are going to be one of those big sex you know is a big 5 now until Chelsea get themselves a bit sorted out you know until the whole thing is shaken out it's very hard to say you know what you know what results are worth you know you could be looking back and if West Ham are in the top 6 even if you that you know dropping 2 points seem bad of the time but a home points against a team that's going to finish top 6 is going to be quite good so. Early days wise. Words as ever from next about it great stuff thank you for your involvement again for us next up in part soon going to hear from the boss the man himself slightly different some of them that grandpa to next night. I'm limited on the B.B.C. Series run have Albion head coach Graham Potter has been outlining his thoughts on leadership the seagulls boss has a masters in leadership and emotional intelligence he's been telling the B.B.C.'s many jazz me about his influences the Dalai Lama and how his degree had an impact on him the Cold War to shootings that were on my course were some surgeons and the guy was delivering the courses in the military so life and death situations and how they were dealing with stress and failure and mistakes and disappointment and in a high performance environment in a different high performance environment so than sport for specifically football for me what were the practical exercises you had to do was one about self talk about how you deal with stress or are you view somethin so you have to stand on a log that was about 3 fourths high but then they do the same size log but it be a lot higher so you've got to deal with the fact that it's really high in fear going on there and how that how much harder East actually climb on to the top of the log the whole point of it is to understand what things affect you and can you be aware of them before that essentially taken over you and then you're acting on them with without any understanding so beware of situations and then taking responsibility for how you act and how high was the log the 2nd time around at this point I should be saying to the lives 5060 feet he actually wasn't that high up but it was high enough for me to my brain to be too weak and panicky and then not be allowed to get up and stand on the log or C.V. Couldn't do it I don't think I did to be honest in our What does leadership mean to you. I think leadership is about understanding yourself because if you don't understand yourself it's very very hard to lead other people. And then it's about creating an environment that helps people be as good as they can be where there's trust people can feel part something and they feel like they're improving how much vulnerability should leaders show should they be themselves and say look guys I'm just like you or should they be the rock all the time that people can depend on even if they're not feeling rockish at some points I suppose that's the key thing around leadership is that there's a sense of when these the appropriate time to show those emotions and to be if you like vulnerable but ultimately the same as the guys that I'm leading in terms of of got my own issues or you've got my family I've got my own sort of ambitions I think it helps that people can see that you're a human being as well hopefully people can see there's nerves but it's not an R. Rated X. Exactly isn't it it's an excited it's a looking forward to the game it's you have to behave in a way that the players can recognise and feel some sort of trust Him Who are your leadership role models. His role models my parents about a huge role in my life there were the 1st people that I sort of looked up to and how they acted and how they worked and brought us up I think they were the 2 that I would point to is it difficult to persuade players when you're a leader who doesn't have a famous C.V. Not have I think what you've done in the past is fine and of course that's important but ultimately players are there there were no how you can help them and what you're saying to them makes sense doesn't matter what I've done 5 or 10 years ago it matters about the now and whether whether what we're doing in terms of the environment that we're creating these stimulate enough for them makes sense for them that they think that yeah this is helping them improve and get better. And then ultimately they have some sort of choice or say over how the environment is because I'm not a dictator it's not my rules it's it's and they have to feel that they've got that responsibility as well did you have to do an initiation when you arrived I had to sing yeah with it you have to sing I didn't have to sing it but I chose to seeing 500 miles by the Proclaimers and I obviously horrifically. In your own time growing now. No chance this in Matthew Ryan sang for me when they resent his initiations and any mention of him singing it would be any worse than me I can go and say that well it certainly didn't put numbers on our ratings I tell you that for nothing. The last few days before the transfer window shut in this country there was a lot of talk about Louis dunk maybe going to Lester and feeling Harry McGuire's shoes Was it difficult to keep him focused on the job in hand and keep his imagination in check because you know a lot of money was being talked about he was going to get a pay rise based on last season he was going to take a step up but how difficult was it to keep his head here it was really easy for us just because of him he was totally and utterly professional We didn't speak about it he didn't speak about it he didn't change his behavior at all he was totally focused on the job in hand focus on us focus on training news the captain e he led by example and he's been. He's been an absolute joy to work with to be honest and athletes reflected in these performances so far this season he's he's been fantastic for us and looking forward to working with him looking forward to him enjoy his football here I think you can't control the speculation you can't control that bit of people who post to East Fife often. You can't control that but but he was he was a model professional during that time I read a story about a time when you gave a book written by the Dalai Lama about the Dalai Lama to one of your players and said they have a read of that I mean is that true was the situation there that's it is actually true or he was basically just beat himself up and every made a mistake on the pitch you could visibly see sees his head would be back in the would be looking the other way turn around and instead of reacting to the mistake he was just losing. voluble seconds in terms of wrist is recovery move just chap in normally around how that wide up was and and it just colleagues are just a conversation around read in a round a member of read in a a book about the doll armor and about how he thought bought things in east the ethics in a modern world of from the uk on him of the title now and anyway owes you something i'll just thought it may be of benefit to him to rate and how did he react so you passing that book over if i mean if he was beating himself up of its i was pretty highly strung by the sound of it it he did he take it and you know read it in the spear in which she meant to lord to do say leave me alone i was having of like they're here i think he was or i obviously was or add to my face or a weather when he left the room oh you've was what is he do in the idiot a thought the he gave a back at city be fair so he's see that gathering dust somewhere always he's read it and it's it's parviz daily ritual in terms of reminded himself of the teachings of the dollar larmer who knows you'll degree as you've gun of eluded already you had surgeons and the was led by a military man you know you're degree could have open doors in any industry did a open no mind to other interests i mean i found out recently attorney purely says god bit of a thing for napoleon bonaparte is there anything like that that your interested him i own found that yet nar are got 3 kids in a young twins a 4 years old so they're quite challenge or ok so there isn't too much time for peace and quiet and reflection to vanish and it when you when you have that time youth so tired of that are not sure you can read too much nice so far football and families 5 for me which are the moments good or bad from your career so far that have have really stayed with the you and shape to the person in the coach that you are probably than one of the most powerful ones was when i decided to retire at 30 and essentially not get paid for plane football anymore thinks they're you It was yeah looking back it's worked out quite well but of course it quite a big risk as well because I kind of probably covered on playing for a few years but I just didn't want to be the guy that was going through the motions or be maybe wasn't being as committed as I should and then you end up compromising somebody else's job you know further down the line so I thought well I'm just annoyed Real Madrid Barcelona they're not coming in for me I knew which way the mockery was going so I just thought I need to be proactive he has got a long life ahead of me hopefully that's given me a bit of strength to be able to say I don't necessarily need football in terms of you can have a career as well in my life without it but that's probably been the big moment the Germany thing lined up the Jaffer plan B. When you took that decision not really I was finished off my degree a property that I was sort of renovating part time that I could finish up with I had thought about going into teaching to finish up my coaching qualifications as well and to see how can I be a better coach and see where that took me that path I didn't have a real plan it was just more that I knew that I needed to stop playing football and then see how life so took it for me is paid off handsomely and here you are in the Premier League and I thought it would be interesting to talk to you and I was right it's been a pleasure Graham thank you for your time and all the very best of luck this season and I thank you. D.C. Series. On the M 25 in Surrey quite close just on the it's right at junction 6 the Goldston because of the breakdown there in Cranford and the 81 the Paul quake partially blocked just on the northbound side because of an accident need to be a furphy in no central London now and in Euston ever shelled streets are closed in both directions after a water main bath between Euston Station and Doric way having a check at the airport and at Gatwick and Heathrow Airport nearly all British Airways flights were cancelled because of the strike action at the latest i memory will. I firmly believe I'm limited to this sorry yes this is how we are limiting myself to bear arms and are brought to have our way in commentator Johnny can't ever get enough falling apart with me looking ahead to the big home game weekend as the Albion return to premiere action against Burnley but so far we've heard from the fans we've heard from one section of the media from Albion fan in the self but how about a familiar voice Johnny gets to travel and see pretty much every team in the Premier League in a season yes absolutely I've been getting a valuable insight from the match of the day commentators Simon Brotherton who's based in Sussex he commentated on the home game against Southampton at the Amex I've been finding out what his thoughts are on the seagulls but also where much of the early commentator does junior international break Hello yeah what do we do during it it's not like I thought this time you know maybe I better watch a bit more football. Take a break and mix in a bike race as well because some of the listeners may be aware like I cover cycling have done for many years on the radio and also for 50 B.C. T.V. Now so it was a good chance to get a bike race and 2 really good games actually Johnie Germany against Netherlands last Friday which was a thumping went for the Dutch so I got a chance to see David proper Come on for a little while yes the bench towards the end of the the match of course was a nice time to come on to substitute when you're on the up you know secured a venue like that against a team like Germany so he settled in quite nicely few a few nice touches from him but really he was involved in the the game management side of things I think you could say towards the end of the match when the the Dutch were getting ready to take their 3 points. Northern Ireland Germany on Monday evening which was a very yeah Northern Ireland played really well I mean when you you think of the job that Michael O'Neill is done there it's so impressive when you look at the parts of that team individually you think war is no way they're really going to mount any serious challenge. In international football let's be honest but actually you know the way that they all play and the crowd always play a part there as well and it was it was a really good match they they gave Germany a really good game actually today and I did it about race in Belgium on Saturday Brussel cycling classic which had one of the best finishes I've ever had the the world Asia or very nearly the confusion to commentator and actually there were 6 of them right across the road from one gutter to the other and you know barely a blink of an eye between them it was a great finish when you're commentating is it is there a vast difference between I mean certainly I would imagine this huge crescendo at the end of the race years is constantly building towards one point whereas if you for instance if you talk about the journey home game is game management sort of game is slightly over so there is probably different but how does how do you find that change from one sport to the other I do well I actually I quite like it in the sense that you know most of my time is spent covering football which I love but just occasionally a few times a year it's quite good I think to think about something else for a few days and you know get to work on something else keep it fresh air mix things up a little bit but with a bike race you do have that moment at the end you know that key moment when somebody crosses the line 1st. You know you know that is it be you know there's not going to be any V.A.R. To come packaged look at so you know the Americans are limited Yeah you don't really have that jeopardy and it's a bit like you know you commentary on boxing when is the knockout punch and you know in the book and the approach the other boxer hits the deck and doesn't get up you know that sit or in an Olympic final when somebody crosses the line 1st football you never quite sure you because invariably things change during the 90 minutes Yeah let's talk about the elephant in the room where we would be a or in terms of point I've found it quite well we've got about 3 minutes without mentioning you know who it was we did it is true and what do you think of do you do you feel a sense. civil mean i see it we ceded the we now we have actually been in probably quite a few different incidents we specially goals are the hammon allowed a new were there for the south huntin game at the a mix t. Think it does have an impact on the crowd the feeling i me it does when our jobs won't really word about their our listeners will be fans in their we going to games in the not quite sure with a to celebrate all known yeah i think there are other issues there my starting point is i know know everyone agrees my starting point is if is the actually if you have a way to improve the number of decisions key decisions that are correctly giffen then you really should use it and i think it you know because i was commentating when the republican arlen played france in paris in a in a playoff to get to the world cup finest cherry on marie famously handled the ball yeah and then put it in the middle in the print scored and i'm no republic of violent work effectively done out of a place at the world cup finals because of that everybody knew what had happened yeah occluding most of the placement pitch apart from the referee and that was the day the i just thought no you cannot have this a televise sport were people are watching these matches these high profile games all around the world and everybody knows what's happened in the only person who doesn't is the one person who does need tonight and that's what made me start to thing you know there's too much at stake really for these decisions but moving on from that We take the Brighton game for the Brighton Southampton match I think we're all getting a bit people are getting a bit confused with it because when on Dhoni had that rush of blood to the head and got himself sent off there was no doubt it was a very clear decision I had a feat of Stockley park the V.A. Are so I could hear what they were saying to the referee that was a very quick check on that one you know there was no debate as to whether the referee got it right or wrong quite clearly it was a sending off offense I found it slightly odd that young Valerie was booed for a little while by sections of the crowd after that the Southampton player involved because I didn't think he made a meal of it and he was no not the player he was wronged so it was nothing to do with him and then Albion scored a goal didn't they which was then disallowed and again people sort of reacting against video of the stadium when actually it was nothing to do with it was it was quite clearly the decision that the assistant was able to take and it was a take your pick thing wasn't it because yeah and I think it was he was he was offside he was in the line of the goalkeeper you could say fell the goalkeeper as well so take your pick so it wasn't as if L.B. Went down out of a goal by cation and I don't think people felt that I doing it just changes the atmosphere slightly just coming into that I mean one person who's had a couple of goals chalked off as been under Trussell you got a glimpse of him we obviously monitor the international grain Yeah and him for she was due to make his international debut for Belgium a good summary no on Friday but he's got a growing injury I mean I think it's the latest on that is a little while here we think it's some Albion's point of well yeah I mean it looks like possibly 2 or 3 games could be a severe blow but what was your 1st impression of him sort of in the flesh as it were almost here on him to be honest with you John it wasn't my 1st impression of him so as a commentator on him last year when he was playing for think as they were saying Flemish playing for game last year saw him in playing in the Europa League I think it was a couple of times around about this time last season and I remember thinking Wow what a really good player he looks nice cool. Quite a few goals in the early portion of last season as well so and I did commentary on them a few times throughout the campaign and I don't know what a key player it was for them so I was really pleasantly surprised to see him a coming into the Premier League and also the fact that he was going to play for Brighton so you know it's not entirely a surprise to see that he's made such a positive impression because he has looked impressive personally here. Are often the people who at the international break in huge clearly don't have a break I mean in a way I don't in a way now because there are so many internationals at Brighton and Hove do you think it's just maybe a sort of another indicator for the progress of the club I'm especially now we've got down ash with him as well he seems to sort of bit a bit more structure into sort of loan players the recruitment Well it's now you know it feels like he is just another indicator in terms of you mentioned Davie proper as well you know Shane Duffy For Republican volunteer These are all indicators that they're sort of nudging their selves further into being an established Premier League club and let's be honest they have to if they're to stand a chance of staying in that division because everybody you know nearly everybody else is investing so you have to invest. Almost a standstill don't you in the Premier League these days and also of course with players like coming in those sort of players and any number of others that Brighton have signed in recent years you know you can often get better value by looking around the world and looking in the various leagues in Europe than if you were to buy you know homegrown players Yeah so I think that's probably a factor as well although as we've seen some of them can be a bit hit and miss count there are no guarantees with transfers very much show and you're going to Cody's disappearance to happen time is probably an exe and other example hasn't quite worked out. This this weekend they brought in take on Burnley Well let's say that it goes better than last year I mean I had to do that but only really impressive that day and it was they were that day and I don't I mean obviously you see brought in every week so you know the mood in the stadium but I got a real feeling that day if I remember rightly that that's when I think a lot of people suddenly thought are we really are potentially in a relegation fight here in a year very serious way and I think the mood did turn rather sour didn't I think Tom he never a great game played really well that was the next thing I was going to say actually was I call it like great saves you absolutely you're absolutely right but it was a yes I think a key moment in the season and probably in the decision that the club change into to bring Graeme Porter was going to mean grandpa Terry in your impressions of him and last weekend against Manchester City after the result talk about Pep Guardiola in his praise for the way the grandpa also wants to play the game with me this week Manchester City's school has been valued over 1000000000 pounds feels like a sort of watershed moment really obviously people are brought in Burnley born with can really compete with the club but I just wonder what you make of that huge praise to come from a colleague doesn't always do it does he clearly respects Graeme Potter as a coach Yes And I think that you know the record that Graeme Potter had where he was ostracism in the job that he did that was quite extraordinary was an. You know the people of the last year were very impressed with the job that he did in the relatively short time that he was there because it wasn't it was a club that was sort of selling it wasn't really a club that was investing so it was a difficult time for him to go in so I think he did do a good job there I really I did feel there was a very different the Southampton match is the only one that I've done so far this season. I felt there was a real a very different atmosphere in the stadium there was a much. Greater degree of positivity coming from the stands and also I felt on the pitch I think you know he has told intents and purposes purposes its evolution rather than revolution is not really because many of the players are actually the same I think it's evolution rather than revolution isn't it at the moment because you know it's not his team per se because many of the players are the players that were there last year but he certainly has got them playing in a different manner and I think from that one game you know just looking at it having that extra defender with Dan Byrne In the middle there that sort of frees up the players out wide it frees up the midfield a little bit more I thought they were moving the ball around more quickly more positively they were getting on the front foot more quickly I thought they were bolder in possession and I also thought that they were bolder when they didn't have the ball in the sense that rather than just dropping back and trying to sort of shut up shop or shut the door keep the door closed I think they were more they were bolder in trying to regain possession and to maybe take more risks in trying to do that so I think they were it was very noticeable that it was a different looking Albion to me in the opening half an hour I thought they I thought that they looked better than Southampton for 30 minutes overall and I thought it was a great shame that Florida and only had that rush of blood to the head I mean what was he thinking it was out of character for the way the game would go on to that point it was just maybe not quite a character for the player No I don't think. Probably or the so. But it was a shame wasn't because straightaway you know you know I'm commentating the match I'm thinking well that's going to be very hard for Brighton to really get anything out of this game and of course everybody knows that because for most of the teams in the Premier League you need to be at it 100 percent only to get results in this league and those who you're playing as absolutely that is the voice of Simon brothers in the Sussex place sure that I commentator chatting with Jonny canter Simon is all. SEABORNE with this weekend joining of course from Warren will see the Albion take on Bernie that's what we discuss in part for life. To be an unlimited B.B.C. Salary thank you for listening or downloading the B.N. Limited podcast our final part then we look ahead to the big one Burnley at home on Saturday with Johnny canter and were asked No Johnny still in the studio with me and you've been catching up with the B.B.C.'s Bernie commentator Scott regionally Scott if we could just start last time we were on the air together was actually on for another station actually we were talking about whether Lou stung James talk Oscar Nathan Akki was going to reply replace Harry McGuire none of them did in the end it was a big relief to Burnley and their fans Yeah definitely because talk has been a fantastic player for Bernie now for the last 2 or 3 years he's many that good a player to force his way relatively recently into the into the England squad so yeah I think it was a relief I mean there was a little bit of concern because Burnley still kind of live within their means and if Leicester City were to come in with a with a substantial bid then it would be difficult for me to turn that down so I think it was a little bit of concern maybe but only might face a fight to keep him but. He and me are exceptional in Central and friends with Burnley So I think the fact that they're still there is absolutely pivotal to them because Burnley base almost in their entire team on their defense and be able to contain and defend properly and the 2 biggest components of data are their captain Ben 1000000 he sent our partner James talk ask You see I'm pretty sure that the bunny fans were very pleased to see the transfer window close Yeah absolutely I mean it was it doesn't mean that they won't come back and but they seem to be doing OK Leicester without either of those 2 but it's interesting you say that because you're going to talk about the how key he is and it's not the spine of the team. When it comes to Bernie I mean a lot of us have seen Sean doshas sides now regularly in the Premier League this so pivotal is so key in it's like a leader to them as well isn't it but it's the spawn of the team that so important and the core I suppose it is and those 2 have been absolutely fundamental to it now for a number of years what Shawn diet she's managed to do since he's been openly is find central defensive partnerships that of the of worked really well for the team that started with when he 1st came to the club Jason shackle Michael Dolphin the not impressed to bend me and Michael Keane and then eventually Ben 1000000 James talk off he's always had absent is a former center half Sean Dyke Show he kind of obviously he's team is built around having that solid defensive base they're relatively predictable I think need to get to know how you can apply against them I actually thought it's quite interesting that you can clap I was there on Saturday. When Bernie in the end lost to Liverpool and you can clock came into the radio room afterwards and said I think of now found out a way to play against Burnley I'm thinking act for me our show was pretty much everywhere the Quite a predictable thing you know what you're going to get with me so I was quite surprised to hear him say that yeah I mean that's one thing that they are not criticism but an observation that they made about the Albion on the Christian and that's probably changed a little bit now and there are a few surprises with the way that the Albion have been playing another sort of consistent member of the side and another important player is actually bonds you can't have a game between Burnley and album without talking about him I mean this statistic about just to go where Omani been the only 2 players who scored more Premier League goals in 2019 and he's by some he was very underrated at the Albion but is he now like a sort of fans favorite he I mean he's delivering on the pitch for starters in a he's absolutely a fan favorite Johnny Yeah and he took a little bit of time for him to get into the the burn the 1st team when he remember when he came from Brighton and joined Burnley real. Simply a long period of time has been given impact substitute but they had lots of down eating things some vox those top players who were Charlie Austin I think as well who were who were regulars and the 1st pick for Sean diet she's a Tatts who wait some time for him to get to the stage where he's now 1st name on the team she and also backing that up with some fantastic performances but he's absolutely a fans favorite because and you have seen of a lot of him because the way he plays is also Lee committed and wholehearted and football fans will forgive a lot if you work hard and if you work hard at turf more in front of the Burma supporters they will forgive you for a lot and he does Cyprus absolutely everything anyone chase every single last course and then he's back in the top as well with with goals in the 3 years enjoyed a fabulous calendar year it is a remarkable stock he's rewards now I feel for his patients when he 1st came to the team and also he's just shit persistence and hard work to try to get him self into it and keep his place into it and when he when he sponsors don't understand him self the goals are followed which would be really good to say Yeah I mean 12 in total last season is there anything a little bit different we often talk about his ball strike people talk about how you always get sick really good connection on the ball but for me he he physically looks bigger and stronger perhaps I mean he was always not slight but he was very strong but even now he's a little bit more muscular Is it fair to say yeah perhaps I think I think he made a tough cookies knee you know when you speak to him you know that he's he's someone that such a you know pretty much work always like to get to where he is and that type of thing and I think perhaps he has maybe just. A little bit perhaps even says it to. Enormous effect I think what he found out as well particularly Actually this would benefit him in the Premier League is that some central defenders in the Premier League and vote actually quite a lot are not used to the physical approach from a center forward and they're also not used to. Facing 2 center forwards Most teams play with one up front don't they go and play with with 44 to play with 2 center forwards so that the defenders are constantly being harassed by either bones or wood and I think Barnes has found out as learnt in the Premier League that if you are able to put just a little bit about obviously all within the rules of the game but you're making yourself physically strong I think he believes that quite a few central defenders in the Premier League are not able to cope with that it was against Virgil van dyke at the weekend. You know muscle for muscle on Saturday but not every defender I don't think is willing to play that kind of talk for role and I think Barnes work that out and you mention his ball striking it is powerful hits the ball really hard and I think he just got that little that little package at the minute all working so click together so clicked into place well mostly has been on the periphery as Jay would really be interesting to see the reception he gets he does free jazz would be generally but I suppose we probably should talk about Chris would because he's another former seagull was home to his career he seems to be playing regularly but maybe not scoring the goals but dosh clearly is rewarding him with a starting 11 berth because he feels he's can contributing to the SO IT Yeah they both finished the season well last year which is the reason why Rodriguez at the moment has have interest to kind of be patient and wait for his place on the bench because wooden bars last year in the 2nd half of the season where Bernie tried it a fantastic transformation because it. Seemed a Last year Bernie were dead and buried I just didn't see a way how they would avoid relegation that they were hammered 5 min against Everton they were pathetic The performance was really dreadful and they transform that remarkably in the 2nd half of the season and managed to stay up last year and fundamental It was a run of games in which Barnes and Ward both scored I don't think it was a week went by for a period of time where it was either wood or bonds that were picking up points for burn the so that partnership tools end of last season is the reason why I started again with those 2 top which is why Roger. You guys who just happen to be a little bit patient and wait for his turn but you could fall for each other you know the only good while a wooden bars that compliment you quite nicely I think would be far more mobile training is a little quicker than the Barnes. Towards the end of last season they struck up a very very spot on the standing and that's the reason why at the minute those 2 were 1st choice for Bernie what about this start to the season then Scott the results reflected the performances. Yeah probably I think I think so they went down to Austin and I think probably going on another day may have got something but when you get down to these big asides you know you're in you know you're always kind of up against it yeah we were when I was just city you know it's like you're always this there is no I mean you see they just don't give anything away to this based on their own ground these these top stablished 6 sides so you know you're always scrapping around for bits and bobs if you can get something if you get a corner kick in some of these some of these games as a success so take away Arsenal from it in Liverpool from it because they're played for much as a 12 of them against Arsenal and Liverpool how divided pretty steady start debate Southampton it's more the 1st game of the season and they were they were back followed by a team by very well and they went towards and they were leading right up until stoppage time and conceded a penalty kick which which in the end cost them all 3 points but yeah I think have been OK now I think they made a pretty steady start from 12 months ago it's a big improvement and they had a dreadful 1st half of the season washy I mean with that down to the Europa League people saw talks about the time of being stretched having to start early or do you think that was the fundamental problem or the problem but the fundamental it's such a big task for someone with a squad like a burly were it is just so difficult to compete at that level isn't it and it did seem to have an impact from the outside I think he did Johnny Yeah I think he did I think they played quite a lot they played up being twice and they went you know actually into your oppressor post according to Scotland to play. Them. Well that's really where they have all this is they were a little. Everyone was gearing up for a fabulous trip to somewhere exotic and you were the greatest threat in the world to Aberdeen elsewhere but we went 1st time but yeah I think it did have a bit of a knock on a bit of a knock on effect and I just think there was a what happened Susan before last when they finished 7th was it was extraordinary and that is never going to happen again you know boom we're not going to finish it could have another freak season for the 7th of course to go but that is just a one off season for for a club like that on these unique achievement to have to have sustained it for $38.00 games to be never out of the top 7 all season was outstanding So that was such a unique season so I think there's always going to be you know we're going to come down from that you know when you know going to better that for burning you know to break into the top 6 if you burn leagues is not going to happen so there's always gonna be a come down from that season I think that combined with the demands of travelling around Europe with a very small squad did all catch up on them and I actually believe I said this on that the other weekend actually I believe that the way that last season they were able to stay in the division to transform their season from the 1st half to the 2nd half of the season I think that was a bigger achievement than finishing 7th because they were cut they were quick to drag flashy they looked at him buried there and they had a great 2nd half to the season but yeah I think going back to the point I think was all the reasons behind it was that was a dramatic drop off and that can happen in the primary Can't you can lose games and get a run of 456 games we don't win absolutely and that's I think that resilience is reflected in the manager in the team and that's what's mean that they've you know they've stayed in the Premier League for so long and now establish themselves there but I mean whatever happens should be it should be a great game I'm really looking forward to it and seeing those former players come is always interesting and I think it interesting clash of stars as well you mentioned the 442 now going to go on 352343 Have you want to talk about it this season so certainly should be. An interesting question and I think it well yeah I'm down there or so for the game and look I'm looking forward to it they do tend to be good games down there something tends to happen in these in these pictures which is only going to set it up once with a debut You know you're going to want to do another repeat you know that we're going to disappear any record of late but no absolutely but yeah I think there are it's an interesting clash of kind of styles brought in fans know what to expect when Winborn the call and they will make it difficult as they can they will be organized they'll be hard to beat they'll get the ball for back to front quickly as they can they play with an enormous amount of enthusiasm and pride and organization and determination and whether you would mire that particular brand of football to see and I don't quite you know is horrible to say the top but whether you admire that or not or if you enjoy it or not yeah I think you do have to have some admiration for it and the success that Bernie have had with it and they play to their strengths and know what they are as a football team and as a football club and they play within their parameters within their restriction in their limitations and everyone's bought into the and then that's that is reflected absolutely with their manager on the pitch and that goes all the way through to the boardroom and into the stands everyone is kind of on board of on message with what is realistic to expect from Burn the in terms of a football club and in terms of what they can achieve to the course of a season and also to expect game by game and that everyone kind of buys into that and that's when you see Burnley play on a Saturday and one understands what that's all about I think and I think it will be an interesting kind of contest on the weekend and hopefully everyone stays on the pitch Yes indeed Scott Reed there speaking with Jeremy from B.B.C. Like a sure John who's going to expect but I suppose after the sending off the home defeat the point is West Ham You know that is a little pressure that was nice and I think this pressure on the home form throughout the whole of 2019 home form has been poor Obviously we can't necessarily juxtapose owes the timing under pressure. With the time on the ground Porter I think they'll feel they should have talked about it before the more points at home against West Ham and south and so I think there is a little bit of pressure on them to a certain degree from that it is a totally different challenge hoping they'll keep 11 players on the pitch this time and that might just help them but it will be interesting what Scott was saying there for 4 to 52 will that help maybe but Willie tinker again that's a possibility with Graeme Potter as well yes tinker and what how do you see that in your retraction on a couple of false changes the air I mean truss rod out definitely he could keep marching that further forward roll in the right hand side as an attacker and keep Manado at left side or he could drop March back in maybe Gross has a more prominent role to play on Saturday I thought he did exceptionally well against against Watford whether he might be able to become that sort of creative playmaker again Mo pay obviously will be keen to be starting but then Conley comes into the fray now and Dhoni and the Cartier have gone does he team up with Glenn Mari orders to to come from the bench I mean that that's one possible tweak that he could he could do the other thing is overseeing defense as well he preferred Adam Webster to Shane Duffy gets Man City will get to see probably weather gets maybe what's got to say the physical force of of wood and bands maybe he's better suited for that or is actually we looking to the future now and maybe Webster is there the ball playing center about that he wants to play there regularly I think that's probably maybe even more interesting than what he does up front. Is he done enough maybe just to start playing at not only in a word probably not know would be one word there he is starting for Australia on Tuesday evening so he will be getting game time but I thought that against Brazil Rose it's difficult to come in against Bristol Rovers in the League Cup It's difficult isn't it I think at times you get snow his teammates but you know I think he's an option he's he's certainly got the ability and he's her Albion before when he was at Huddersfield but at the moment I just don't really quite is there in terms. I suppose game time and also the ability to work with his with his teammates but maybe with the with the fact that some of the others maybe a bit tired or whatever he may come into the brain but I don't see him perhaps perhaps be 11 or use a kid to get something at home so it's fun is it a case of grandpa to keeping faith and it's just not out of organs is any reason not to but also fans can frighten him very much so he said we're at the beginning of this project not at the end when I spoke to him after Manchester City and he's hoping that the fans will see that as well and I think there will be a few bumps in a row I think you know they may well can see more goals and I think they will you know create more chances hopefully they'll school more goals as well it will be more entertaining but it might be. Rather than that's a regularity you had under Chris shouldn't to clean the 1st year and a half in the Premier League I think you might see a bit more of a rollercoaster in terms of things initially under Graham Potter but at the home for me has been the mainstay you're always going to get more points generally at home than you will away and that's something that he'll have in the back of his mind particularly this this home game against Burnley before 2 tricky little trips Newcastle and Chelsea County Council thank you very much and once again Deborah get your not go if you are enjoying the whole game is live here on B.B.C.
