In about 15 minutes time we're going to have a look at Planet focus of the week which is a beautiful mahogany and I've got the musical rockery coming up at just one and I want the gardening link is to a brief piece of music fest eyelets have some How do. We go out. To our go out. England b.b.c. Radio York what is live by how do I feel like that one is just a coming up to 10 past 10 here on b.b.c. Radio etc a win here until mid day and night Harrison another 50 minutes off on gardening guru taking your calls I wonder trouble 14849 if you want to get in touch like Jeff from home on Spaulding more Jeff good morning you've got quite a few questions for Nigel. Morning York. Firstly we. Must see up or so I think when you get well in. The new season the planted early in late potatoes but leave that to by way of right . First of all till I get rid of a way 'd to plant potatoes for next year. 2nd question is when to plant overgrow. Know when to plant when to prove overgrown 'd apple trees right Ok yeah let's deal with the y.m. Problem 1st I mean why a worm Ironically we had. We had Clive on the early with a Shifa group problem and I suspect that's potentially what. Stimulated your question on why you were because while you were in a way to ground pests that do very similar problems and cause very similar problems to Shifa girls basically the plant roots. It's a difficult one getting rid of them I mean we again we have these nematodes all all I think when you read the instructions on the nematodes these worms that year water into the soil. It never mentions that they also control why you were always tends to be for Shifa groups in leather jackets and occasionally you get should have one or 2 of the other soil passon problems namely vine Weevil as well. There are the all the all technique for getting rid of why you were there reckon is good called savation and soil preparation which I think is what you do in any way and regular cultivations of the answer I think I think what the training and courage you to do is to try and cultivate the silo over and and dig the wire worm to the surface and the 1st thing you'll see on site Robin's cause the robins absolutely adore why you were the groups that cause these problems to the put sets as. Regular And I'm sure you know this Geoff regular crop rotation you know you you need to rotate your crops as well that can help. Build in raised beds put in fresh new soil in and growing them in clean new soil is another way around it having said that potatoes of this reputation of cleaning the soil anyway which is what they do from a nutrient point of view are an excessive build up a new chain so it's a difficult one we why you were cultivations is the traditional method regular cultivations you can have a go with an amateur odds. Sterile and sterile and the good ones you can get hold of course only the professionals can get them cos the money fact you don't the license there really do get rid of the problem. So yeah I mean it's a case of just chewing away and trying to win the battle really. Your 2nd question about planting not planting prune in fruit trees any time from now on it's all the end of February you've got literally you've got a big window of opportunity you've got 3 months to get them done. And if these in the glen trees you will you'll end up probably taking quite a lot of all wood out don't be frightened a lot of the gardening books will tell you to do it on a 3 year cycle I'm a bit of let's go for it in one season and then get very few crops they snacks you know coming in season but then you've got the ship of the tree sorted out in one go instead of messing around for 3 years it's dependent on you which you prefer depends on how neglected the it's very therapeutic pruning neglected apple trees I are still enjoy doing it for clients. And you know it's it was a skilful job it's just a case of knowing which which of the branches you need to take out which ones to leave but as I say it's good for. In the fresh air make sure you got a nice shop pruning saw and make sure you get a new blade for your ball saw don't be going up there with a chainsaw that's fair to all in lethal messing around which insolvent blood is not trees and things I wouldn't recommend that. But yeah I mean the good thing is a cause you've got the skeleton of the tree you can see it now this time of year because all the leaves are off it stand back have a good look at the tree and you'll get some idea of what you need to take our obviously looking for tween leaders or even 3 leaders reduce and keep one leader in there and then literally go in hard and do the smart crown pruning crown thing. Thanks very much Nigel the whole of the effect. Is a very expensive it is. Well it's got to be all over the place. Yeah I mean regular cultivates you know if you've got yourself a little rolls of it so that helps you know and just churn it over and get the groups to the surface very often if you get them if you catch them on a good day you can get your bill to how the groups off the soil and get rid of in that way put them on the bird table cause the birds love the robins in particular. Ok thank you very much all right good luck good luck Jeff Jeff thank you so much because that's Jeff and I want Spalding more of bug problems going on at the moment and not pleasant that well soil pasts are a nightmare they just eat the root the roots and then of course the roots you know plants can't grow without roots and it's game over and I like the fact you give out safety devices are not only do you get gardening advice Nigel Harrison you get safety advice as well if you want to get into a 100 trouble 14849 you can text as a 133 Forget start a message with the word you're going to an a in the afternoon we've already moved from Christmas presents in the morning till after the point now that's 3 o'clock. In the morning we do we do. You. Well actually in the presence after take we don't have lunch with the queen releasing 10 past 3 weeks what are you doing for goodness sake up until the queen. So don't have our Christmas dinner until after the queen has spent. In the afternoon weekdays from b.b.c. Radio you. Fabulous panel back from this week they have got some incredible guests they've got t.v. Celebrity Sabrina guy and she's with Adam and Ana you might see in Iran something like Saturday kitchen but she also now spends quite a lot of time in North Yorkshire we do love a cook we do have a chef here on Thursday my the half we so jealous star Vicki Michelle is popping in she's one of his favorites as she. He is playing the wicked queen in Snow White at the your grand opera house Pantai And on Friday in a from Shed 7 as well out of them playing Leeds Arena at the weekend and possibly the biggest draw of the week if you fancy meeting Adam Tomlinson and why wouldn't you he is bringing their say life from the Stephen j. As if they're on Wednesday so plenty of stuff coming up with Adam and Anna this week that show is 12 until 4 but right now we are talking gardening Nigel Harrison is in the studio we're going to have a look at our plans of the week in just a moment's time but in flux tins got in touch me suggest how we should treat our Krokus Mia we end up with lots of foliage but not many flowers those that do appear always follow them we've tried taking up the corn's and removing all but the new s. But we seem to still have the same problem any advice yakker cause me a moment brief if it's falling over I suspect he's one call Lucifer it's the big tall lanky red warm. Lovely grip plants and good for insects get insects into the garden the bees love the crew calls me yeah I mean if the 4 we know of are and then again if they're not flowering one thing you might want to consider is lifted and splitting and dividing the core and now is a good time to do it you know we're into well officially winter starts today I suppose but we're going to you know the back end of the year long as the soil conditions are suitable not to frozen and not to way you can lift the columns out and split them and that will regenerate the columns and that way you'll hopefully improve the flowered. And of course if you've got lots of brown foliage Now we mentioned up tidy the garden ready for winter now's the time of year to cut them back. Mind Off cut back literally down to about 56 inches from ground level so you've got a little bit of brown stock above the surface of the soil partly so you know where the arc on the spring but yeah cut them back lift and split them if you're if you've not done it for many years and if it is low. Phonetics so much used to be a pretty obvious is that you need to think about staking them pull some kid around them and stick them just so they don't flop all over God now seems very very simple straightforward yet the great public recalls me here and you know the moment Breashears is common name most people know the orangey Kalid warms But Lucifer has been around a while and he's a big tall red one and he sees very striking a very striking Kolosov in the garden if you don't see oranges and reds in the garden Oh that's beautiful for this tell me Oh I admire when flaxen and why gardening at b.b.c. I hope that helps we have plant focus coming up after that level $42.00 am lessons in love you out. To our. To our. To our thanks. To our. Level lessons in love I'm just spikes myself on the planet of the week Nigel and I know I know that's quite quite spiky right what have we got here if I didn't know if you didn't have those amazing yellow flowers or flowers. And you saw the foliage plant would you think it was what does the full Eagle cloud it looks very holy thugs brilliant everybody says I'm glad you said it as well you see it looks like a holy leaf the plant of the week is Mahoney a cross media charity after deliberately chosen the culture of our culture there out of the ones available the straight forward. There's one called Lionel Fawlty skills one call when to some book charity to me is the best because the as the a price flower spikes and the flower spikes are about 868 inches long I want you to put you know. Because I feel. What do you smell it smells very sweet it's now it's really nice isn't it right there a nice scent the partly the books all the gallon books it's got that Lily of the valley smell but you know it's got it in my eyes it's got more news but smile and to have flowers on shrubs in the garden in winter is so important for the few be pollinating insects you do get on a warm winter's day you can get them and you will find that they're the reason the sente they are so scented is to try and attract any of the lip pollinators that could be in the garden. What you need to know about Mani is there an evergreen shrub medium sized to make about 6 to 8 feet they can get bigger if you leave them and leave them and leave them. So every 5 or 6 years it's useful to go in with a pair of lockers. And literally that's very low maintenance that every 5 or 60 you have very little Main say like Clemenza And yeah my house we do a year so their flowers from now literally all through December January into probably it we should be lucky enough to get them flower and into February as well saw a long period of flowering lovely flowers spikes. Evergreen shrub assess 6 to 8 feet tall of the fertile humus rich soil moist and well drained at the same time can tolerate full sun all partial sheered. Propagation if you want to source seeds in late autumn cos the flowers eventually turn into these lovely blue or black seed heads or you can take semi right cuts into all leaf coarsens in in late summer early autumn it's an evergreen shrub with these holly likely eaves flowering now. As I say if you do want to prune them back do it last week of air prole 1st week of Mare all the every 6 or 7 years you need to prune the back they get really tall unlike after a few years you need to comptroller again so if they get to about 8. 9 feet literally go in take them back to 3 or 4 feet from ground level with law to say let's bring a lease or. They'll regenerate and off you go again and great group plans I just love them to bits originate from the edge of the Himalayas and there are some North American and Central American culture of ours well over stuff that's plan of the week the Mahoney a Just be careful of the very spiky leaves. It's 25 past 10 here on b.b.c. Radio you'll. Probably have the music in a tick but 1st off let's launch the musical rockery every week we do this just a little bit of fun I want to know what the gardening link is to this song. Was. Nigel's nodding along I'm not going to tell you who's singing it what the track is but I just want to know what the gardening link is to this. Was. Hest has the forecast for this morning. A fine and dry albeit very chilly day to come today. Plenty of sunshine bands just want to coast to shower as temperatures along the coast reaching around 7 Celsius but it will feel it colored in that I think on the inland sorry I've been on tonight it looks like things are going to come dry and clear and that will allow the temperatures again to take a real tumble we could see one or 2 Mr Fog patches forming in the be a widespread frost to start the day tomorrow. Even outlays of minus one Celsius which is 30 in far in height high pressure holding on to things then into the start of next week so although it will continue to feel chilly it will stay dry and settle with plenty of sunshine turning a little bit milder they form a week on Woods as things tend a bit more unsettled as well and you next time waterfall which beats 855 Scapa 915 finally 917 and putting 10925. With. B.b.c. Radio. Yes good morning IP Well it's just gone 1030 on the 1st of December I think Condit maybe I will do later I am asking you I want to know what is the gardening link to this clip of a song. I thought I was being quite mean but our listeners cannot be fooled Good morning to you Annabel Good morning to Martin and to jail as well have got in touch on the text 813 double 3 message with the word York if you think you know the gardening links to this. I mean it is a cheat in absolute Chuen Nigel Harrison is still with us in the studio taking your gardening calls and your queries are way under trouble 14849 you can get in touch on the phones like Dave n.x.p. Has done morning Dave morning for. How may we help you this morning to. Really look at the. Oak trees at the back turn. Turn 3. We're already who won 2 of the other 20 feet up with me I've never seen one fall off. I don't know how they do it yeah. A lot of this year. All the. On the ground now but still some of the trees. Getting caught and planting them up or putting them up are growing. Is it worth where our job and Japanese maple. Sees it getting them and putting them on see if we can get any little. Yeah I mean I would probably encourage you to morrow to do the ss than the a comes because the bottom line is here Dave unless you have an estate the size of Hampshire where you're going to plant these trees because of the oak trees and not for a small garden I mean the great great trees don't get me wrong what I might recommend you do I think you're in hacks p.r. . Why don't you get the local school involved with this and get them to come and harvest the a call and. Take them back to the school and then plant them in pots and remember when you plant acorns I remember an old colleague of mine asking Brian used to say whenever you plant in a calm plan to how we would land on the floor don't plan to longways ope plants the flats are making sense. So when that when the radical in the plume you when the room issue appear they're actually you know the seed is horizontal basically and not like an egg you know you would put it like an egg. So I would get the local school involved certainly from the I can point of view because it's National Tree wake it's the end of national To day we need to make people aware that we need more trees on the planet or here's the best tree that we could plant I'll be honest because you need a large space for them eventually you and I was hardly what we had to see them mature to you know their you know oak trees live all the 500 years old so there are long lived tree grit for wildlife value great for the planet great for offsetting our carbon footprints the maples if you've got the Japanese me. These are dwarf maples and again the more leave them outside by the way they need to be stratified they need a period of called and then hopefully next spring as easy they'll come out like mustard and cress put a dressing of grit sand over the surface just to stop giving little work growing over the poles. And leave them all outside whether you do the icons outside or whether you do the miracles outside but you know it's a good time to be thinking about growing trees from seed and you're right there's been a great harvest of orcs this year that those trees that you are mentioning your garden may have a year off next year they have what we call a must year so they get more year of heavy production the next year they may have a year off for the us for the grey squirrels what I refer to is tree rats and all the great fun to watch but if you speak to the Forestry Commission they are their number one pest but the downside with with grey squirrels is the tree seedlings and do more damage and devastation so you can forestry trees and any of the past so yeah I appreciate what you said the lovely to watch running around but yeah there are an import from America I would much rather see red squirrels. Best of luck with that that sounds like a better project on your hands Nigel says take it down the the local primary school get involved with the kids involved with this and I'm sure you know how to be either House peace or a large accommodation on the outskirts of your they do obvious primary school I'm pretty sure or even the gardening group you know the have a very active gardening group in x.p.o. And get them involved as well with the school absolutely great idea with us for another 20 minutes or so bake of the day is coming up after 11 o'clock I it's in the building gin talk laryngeal log yes please that sounds very festive as well if you want to get in touch with Nigel it's under travel 14849 or you can email n.y. Gardening at b.b.c. Dakota ek or you can text as 8132 or 3 start with the word York. Kauai. In b.b.c. Radio you. Get b.b.c. Radio just coming up to course it's on this Sunday the 1st of December thinking a little bit festive we are going to be going to hollo car in the next hour to glow which is this wonderful lights of festival almost that I went to last night will be hearing from halakhah in the next hour but I'm still asking the question what's the gardening link to this. Thing. I want 3 double 3 Start message with the word yolk if you think you know the gardening link see that all will be revealed just after the news with Nick and 11 o'clock this morning but Nigel Harrison still in the studio with us taking your calls the queries the questions I wondered travel 14849 if you want to give us a bell let's talk one job of the week well what can we do it has to be and I probably mention this the last time and it's just really a reminder and a reinforcement that we're actually at the end of national tree week so it's got to be planting a tree The only slight downside with recommending to everyone's gone plant a tree is a lot of people are still having very heavily water logged soil at the moment with all the rain without Yeah Ok we've had a few dry days but it's it's going to probably take quite a few more weeks for the soil to dry out well enough for us to go out and plant trees but what you can be doing is you can be going to a garden center or a nursery thinking about planting a tree and then buy a new tree if you buy one in a concert and he can just keep it all for another couple of weeks till the soil conditions improve and then plant see how his bare rooted you can heal it in which is just a process of making a small trench somewhere in the garden and just covering the roots of and leaving it that's all you're ready supplants around its final plans in place I was doing a cracking talk. Wednesday this week that certain you'll be gardening club lovely gardening group and you know it's one of the. Gardening clubs are still surviving in the York area and their membership is going open open open what's happening the tall my. Gentleman who organizes certain you'll be told me is that there are a lot of members from all the clubs of now defunct according to them so yeah there's a very active God and you and I were doing a talk on trees and I get very passionate about me trees and because it's something I am a bit of a tree hugger and I was saying that you know you must understand before you plant trees in the ground if you've never planted trees before look at the trees growing in the area because they are what we call indicator trees that will tell you what the soil ph is like and what the soil takes trees like to try and plant trees that you know will grow in that. Has a nice apple tree and we always got a couple of little mini apple trees in that the moment so exactly yeah so. He's growing in there if you're not sure and you want to do go off piste if you want say all go think you know left left side box or whatever you call it then think about taking a ph test working out what your ph is and then researching what tree you might want to plant and that would keep you busy for the next day or 2 having a look at all the different garden trees that you could plant in a small garden situation work out what ph you've got by doing a soil ph test buy a kit from a gallon center of one of the big sheds do them. There are only a few pounds work out your soil ph and then link the tree to fit the ph of your soil a lot of trees are not that foresee you know a lot of trees will grow in a neutral slightly acid slightly alkaline soil you know very but there's a lot of trees out there and you know enjoy planting a tree in the next few weeks when the soil conditions improve to get you tree planting and that is the job of the week. Did. You. Feel as a police chief. Beautiful. Soul. To feel. So. Good to see. My bank of the day has just been brought in wows us at gin and orange chocolate Yule log it's been made by underlays he's in the operations studio just waiting to come on after 11 o'clock am sorry to have to excuse me not to lie and shovelling into our faces this is stunning isn't it all this is absolutely to die for Paul what can I say Just check out us who wanted a bigger piece as well it's pretty substantial Yeah well I said to the girl at no point bringing his kids portions and you know we're really growing labs but no actually it's beautiful stunningly well we're going to be talking about that after 11 o'clock we are still talking gardening we've had a message in from text today as we're talking about the fact job of the week is to get your tree planted and she wants to know what the rules and regulations are regarding neighbors and tree planting as a way to get really good on it is a good question yeah I mean the bottom line is my understanding is that when a tree grows over your boundary so when it starts to grow and mature and it actually grows over your boundary. You are we. When your rights as I understand it I mean I would clear this if you were uncertain with the local authority because obviously each local authority has a tree officer but my understanding is it stands if branches overgrow your boundary you are allowed to remove them and offer them back to the or or however I think these laws are proviso or ask the on the 1st before you chop them off you know because the owner might say well actually al remove them so if you thinking about planting trees on the boundary. You need to set and conservation when the tree gets bigger if the orders all neighbors are very green and very much into the gardens they will probably not even blink at the idea of wanting to cut a tree back when it's maturing and growing bigger and bigger alternatively some people can be a little bit you know I need that there's an hour I think all the rights of light where you actually have the opportunity to get like to come into that into the building your house but again you've got supplant the tree far enough away so how far are we to have well there's it depends on the a well known insurance company I used to give a hand out to students a well known insurance company one with a little red telephone but probably not as it down isn't it used to do a handout. And that used to sure suggested planting distances of different treats hypes from people's properties I mean things like some things we're talking you know they need to be faulty 50 meters away. A book things like Will laws and poplars that have invasive root systems they can be a big problem in their houses as well it's costly and the drainage system be because they can actually cause crack into the foundations and eventually subsidence problems etc So you would want to plant will laws and poplars anywhere near a property. It common sense I think prevails a lot of the time but I always recommend in that you buy smaller trees for the more small suburban gallons that most of us live in today. And again planting a tree if one wants advice on plant a tree near a boundary I would put it 2 or 3 metres in side your garden anyway. So that when the callup you do start to develop you're not going to damage and ruin the ship of the tree because you want to hack it back saw it's yeah horses for courses choose smaller trees things like Rowan's. It's some of the. It's a to video it's a grizzly I'm Prunus a rule of the crop of Bach. Brutus Cherry stuff that don't get too big Don't go for the massive trees Ok and I hope that helps I'm sure going to all the texts 13 to 3 start with the Web York also want to know what is the gardening link to this clip of music. I like Irene. A couple of the people who got in touch with the answer on all will be revealed after 11 o'clock. Listen to his own solo. Was. No such. Told so. Don't come. Told. Me. Don't. Play a.
