With itan agreement that he should leave Iraq Kerry said it was the responsibility of the British government to find a way to break the impasse over backset Meanwhile trees a man has met the dining straight ahead of the crucial vote on her Bracks a deal later this month afterwards Wilson said the prime minister hadn't said anything to persuade the party to support the current deal I think that what will happen be that the House of Commons be welcomed it says it will recognise that concept or the 39000000000 pie hole in a budget that can't afford we cut off from the very lucrative. U.K. Market which it has a 92000000000 Prius. And it will want to come somewhere in Congress already isn't part of what further questions are being asked about a firm which was awarded a $13000000.00 pine government contract to run extra ferry services in the event of a no deal back set seaborne free of his knife easing claims that the terms and conditions on its website were intended for a takeaway restaurant the Department of Transport says that section was put up an error seaborne could not be contacted for a comment the company behind the proposed city center try back and redevelopment has said Belfast City Council will send a very negative message to investors if they go ahead with a plan to be it over the project's title some concerns have said the name is not authentic enough for the city and the D.P.'s Lee Rannells wants them to unite in opposition to consummating next Monday we have spent a possible of years trying to develop a brand for Belfast in advance of the for Belfast and important things about one it has to be authentic and it has to be distinctly Belfast. Taking a name from another city is neither authentic nor the stink in Belfast and as you may have heard a few minutes ago from Seamus the winners of the 150000000 pine jackpot in the Need a year a 1000000 strong are from kind Yama their identity will be revealed tomorrow morning they're the 4th biggest jackpot winners in history contingency plans for a new deal bricks and Romy agenda for the 1st cabinet meeting of the year in Dublin the outlined his view on the prospect of no deal and want the Irish were prepared to accept or not speaking off tours leave Iraq or send the that's not forget it was the U.K. That wanted the U.K. Wide element of the backstop that we were very happy to accept a Northern Ireland only backstop that wouldn't impact on Great Britain. The U.K. Wanted a great U.K. Wide elements which is the U.K. Wide Customs Union we worked with them under your partners to make that possible they want to prove you close we worked with them to make that possible so all on the way we've been doing our best to assisting United Kingdom in solving the problems that is creating for the rest of us and we'll continue to do that but there is a limitation and you know that legal guarantee that we won't see the emergence of a hard border on our on on our island I really is the only red line that we've had and it's not one that can change Coleman Clinton's political correspondent have been Irish Independent evening calm. All day in a bind. Well you know that dominated a cabinet meeting in Dublin today as it has done for the last few weeks and it will be the next 12 weeks until shed 2 days for the U.K. Leaving the European Union the end of March are they in a bind where the situation where all eyes are Westminster are waiting to see what will happen with the meeting will focus on the trees made break that deal with the European Union and distressingly had testicular factor explain how he had a 40 minute conversation with the German chancellor Angela Merkel today as they discussed no deal planning within the course but they also talked about was asked the question of what role agreement on how would put us into the House of Commons 2 weeks time and he said that once again he agreed with anger Merkel that they'll stand by the agreement that was made with the you're with the United Kingdom at the end of last year that the deal that France now is trying to sell to house Commons and the 3rd thirds off is the significant opposition to the steel to to the so-called part of parenting to avoid a hard border busy northern quits many of the fears in the Conservative Party are concerns. You will definitely. Process parts. Of Riker said today and after the conversation went on our course you know the leaders are prepared to brainstorm a basis for how they could assist as priest main tourist patient with all agreements force they have to stand by that agreement that was made before Christmas and he said that the inability to rest either with all agreement of the problem in Westminster and trust your looking to Priest May and her government sort of solution you know Arland and the European Union aren't the ones that created the problem so don't have the response to come up with the solution let's hear from them what has to be told and so that's that's kind of where it's being nice apart from the domestic planning that went on here a. Sort of noting a price at which is of course the pope. Well the reason I asked about the being in a bind is this at this very late stage they still like the E.U. Have no idea what's going to happen they have no sense of a plan they have no sense of direction they have nothing but this is it I mean that's and that's what's privately saying today is we need to know what the United Kingdom parliament wants in terms of guarantees and clarification an explanation is slipping from the terms of a prickly backstop and how does it but to be a temporary measure unless and until another measure supersedes test or to your credit you know on the sides pastor has been completely plannings as well and has been in the open to post for instance I asked the question of how how will will the hard part of the appointments in this if there is an O.T. Or scenario I am you know 1st person goes over say is very difficult very difficult to do because we will do everything possible to avoid this and there might be a deal sooner of asker know they'll tell you it's best if there is a government preparing for her order it's just that they aren't just. Stick with plan A with the this recall agreement which was which apparently an open border until a solution was probably placed which future cradling xrays and Salesforce. Oh McQueen thanks very much 9 minutes past 6 here's the latest from Iran well traffic not looks to be moving well on the main routes leaving bad fast plus in London Derry we have had no further reports of delays approaching Penny Brown Ronda bite but those travelling by train delays and disruption to services are still possible along the Londonderry line to a mechanical fault between Antron and Ballymena and fast International Airport there's almost an hour's delay to easy Jet flight from Birmingham it's not estimated to arrive at 25 past 7 and here's more from Barra it's a fairly calm and the day aren't there with plenty of joy weather to come this evening and overnight some cloud will help keep temperatures up to about 4 or 5 degrees over night in many tones in cities but with the skies clear temperatures are likely to fall closer to freezing perhaps allowing for a slight frost in a few spots so cool start to the day on Friday which will be much like today lots of joy weather Claud will come and go along with lights and westerly winds wanted to glimmers of sunshine with highs of 7 or 8 degrees cooler night overnight into Saturday Sunday though not very much will she and lots of joy weather a good bit of cloud as well as some sunshine but by Sunday night and into Monday we will see winds picking up with some breaks of Rhian from the West. Well I was just as over 22 years. Old there's the oldest belief you know but to train with everybody players that type of a child and the persona that as he put the even 8 I was 33000000 people and as of Arsenal so if a table all over Europe probably were a couple 100000000 people said that you know this an extraordinary development is an extraordinary thing to contemplate 115000000 it mean it's beyond most of our imaginings. Well they had no choice on the night they had this that we have all but the putting off and hopefully a lot of a lot of you know you know when it's typical of you Peter that you should be generous in your good wishes for them and how differently has your life turned out from what you thought might happen once you heard you'd won not 10000000 Well if he is a but he end up in a little. But your team spirit in defense of the everything else and the. Different different roads you know but their product you don't. Have a jury didn't look. At also and what do you look back on not want base to be happening that makes you glad that you will not attend you well everybody present that yes there is a violinist in the world. But they are already there. So hopefully. Your ship that that's the important thing and how do you I mean have you any suggestions again we mustn't presume but have you any suggestions about how they might dispose of 115. Given time. And maybe other suggestions but I would use your book would you suggest just in the Show Me rate for me to 58 years up to the Evans take and that a strong proponent. They'll get the people to get but the everything but if you just take stock for a little and look up start and it all is headed as if you know. One of the $10000000.00 to you not enormous So it's been it's not obviously to be compared with $115.00 min but do you want to did represent at the time Peter. 20 years it was when I was a bank as well or better than you know. Well except me man of a lot that actual average Joe was a long time but was I was on the leave all of us. There's some idea again haven't give us a battle for status because to be able Yes indeed and do you remember much but you must remember those few days immediately after the win was announced and what was happening what stays with you from all time well some of us here in the poster in Belfast and so on the after woman started on the Laos they are similar to lose. Your state awards it also was a mass of mass of upheaval as all evil hey the B.T.R. Is a race to instill but I haven't found the script and you have no regrets at all because you you know you hear like the rest of us about people who say that winning huge amounts of money spoil their lives but that's not clearly the case with you. On the person religion also in turn says to think that way and she doesn't read all at the end of a hope yesterday was only houses or people slaves and everyone else. Table I think they have it so that even though I'm not on the ball up and then. Charles. Well Peter we hope you continue to enjoy your life even though that 10000000 win was as you say more than 20 years ago but thank you for joining us this evening it's not short notice Peter Larry lot of you not Harry when are talking about this even extraordinary news about Ahmad couple and we won't know who they are until tomorrow who Vaughn almost 115000000 pounds quarter past 6 here's Michael with the news with the sports news I should say thank you Glentoran manager Gary Smith except that his side's perform has drawn them into a potential relegation battle of the bottom of the Irish premiership the former glans defender was announced as manager earlier today after only McFall resigned following 11 months the club the games have not won since October and are currently without a win in 10 games that's the worst run in their 127 year history Smith who was part of Mick Foles management set up says things must change quickly. They are really fall because I think at the bottom section really think of the field I went recently you know we even argue when they're you know last week so thank you for a quick break so. Our job. I got to tell of a conflict no before they turned towards reversing their league form Glentoran have a chance to advance in the Irish Cup when they meet Crusaders at Seaview in the 5th round on Saturday staying with football and arguably the biggest game of the Premiership season so far tonight as defending champions Manchester City whose table topping Liverpool at the end he had stadium City boss Pep Guardiola says the leaders will drop points between no and the end the season despite being on beaten having won 17 of their last 20 games there who can stretch their advantage over city to 10 points when Guardiola believes people have started to question his side following recent defeats to Crystal Palace and Leicester I know they. Nobody tries Nobody made one point for us but into what is over there in time for I said my previous conference they are in the war for me the best team in Europe in the winter playing a consistent theme in their control of the details in their game so what is every chance for us now it's been a busy day up I broke as Rangers appear close to resigning Northern Ireland captain Steven Davis from Southampton C S boffer since boss. Says he expects the deal to go through Meanwhile striker Alfredo morale loss has avoided disciplinary action that's after he was involved in 3 controversial incidents during Rangers' one no win over Celtic last week Morello's looks set to have a new straight partner soon with Jermain Defoe poised to join the club from Bournemouth on an 18 month alone more details from Robbie for safe Rangers are in the market for a proven striker manger who isn't well Jemaine de Force 6 a club what is sure to supplement the 8 pm seas he's made for Bournemouth this season or only 4 of which have been in the Premier League a deal to take on tablets is understood to be close but not yet sealed and could take until tomorrow to finalize Rangers current mean strike on his old friend Omar Ellis with 20 goals but he's also picked up 3 red counties and 13 yellows this season and that's a threat to the sites title hopes in the 2nd half of the season RORY McILROY will get his opening round of the Tournament of Champions event under way in Hawaii at 10 o'clock tonight the Northern Irishman who is appearing in the competition for the 1st time has partnered alongside Zander souffle Potter Harrington will however have to wait until next month to get his $2900.00 pounder under way he said to mess up coming event in Abu Dhabi and Dubai after breaking a bone in his wrist and finally Lancer will be with it when James Lowe for Saturday's enter prevention meeting with Ulster on the province's crucial European Champions Cup in kind or with to lose a week later that's after the New Zealand native has been given a 2 match ban following a dangerous aerial challenge on monsters under Conway last week thank you I don't know what color chief executive of C. Source. The fisherman's organization is with us on evening Extra Good evening I'm going to examine why our farms at KILL KILL Harbor offering to pay 835-0000 pound bill I have sheer frustration shipments we've been waiting on the people that hold the harboring guilty which is the part i culture except to progress a plan that has been going to slide for several years unfortunately the department is coming up a number of red herrings to stall the project and that's why they're on the straight Cato said if you can't do it we'll get 350000 pounds for WANT 250000 times to progress to the next stage which is the detail the engineering works associated but I knew our harbor kill would this be the building of one or just the feasibility omit this is the next stage of the Phase A better this plan we already have a feasibility study I'm betting spontaneous which is proven the viability of the project chimps was a project that would provide an economic data down for Northern Ireland it's been proven to work with hundreds good meetings we thought with the department in the middle of trying the things we thought we were progressing to the next stage but then all of a sudden the thing stalled that give you a reason. The government's trade reasons 1st of all the old red herring up because no Mr another one of the projects we looked at one sector of the industry and another one that only one location that is killed was looked at the department nodes the chairing the feasibility study all of those issues were examined very closely they were answered and were really fail night snow white that they are there really for the lack of vision on one don't want to progress the plan what do you suspect wealthy you know we must make matters to permanent secretary and dear Mr libraries to permanent secretary in the department economy really they're the ones to show that we could be and they have decided there's so much I don't know either and I'm. Speculating I suppose like you know those but could it be that they've decided there's just so much on Saturday around breakfast when of course it will have a deep significance for for you and your colleagues and killed so much uncertainty around that at this stage is not wise to commit that money well I think not much with all due respect. Bottom line as the Bracks said offers a sea of opportunities for the fishing industry the business plan that was drafted by 2 years ago and I was actually done before that was a branch of referendum the figures typed up Demick image showed an economic divide I don't know anything complex that can only be positive for the treasury of this trail but about the other possible reason and that is there's no minister and they don't seem able to make a decision like this in the absence of well look the United had to swim for months if not years the bottom line as you know is within the past month we're talking 50000000 times and I was from the department then for structure for which you really are a projects and all the Nile and the saying 35000000 announced by government for a water treatment plant in Belfast at this stage we're not looking not money we're looking 350000 polling and will you be able to raise it. Robert Murray knows the part of the harbor we look forward to having a meeting rough next week Big Bird problems start recruiting sales can going to present a fishing industry but look we're probably trying to talk to. McCullough thank you very much 22 minutes past 6 let's get the latest from Matt Well for those traveling by train this evening delays are still possible along the Londonderry line G.T. a Mechanical fault between Antrim and Ballymena and looking up flights said Belfast International Airport Thomas Cook's flight from land to route he has been further delayed to 645 by the next easy Jet flight from Edinburgh is not expected at 5 to 9 if you're found a formula one you'll probably know that the 7 times world champion Michael Schumacher is 50 today as families say they will celebrate his victories records and his jubilation he suffered serious head injuries in a skiing accident in 2013 and hasn't been seen in public since being treated at home in Switzerland and in a statement to Formula One managing director Ross Brawn said Michael has always been a very private person and that's been a guiding principle in his career and his life his family always agreed with that choice but do his fans have a right to know what's going on memory and McCarthy is a motoring journalist evening Maria somebodies business brought him his and his family's That's exactly what I feel like you think that was like well it's reality television and so forth that we've got going on there are people out there who peddle their personal lives you know when they appear on these those shows and I'm like you know it's a reasonable enough for fans to want to know about them but with Michael he was a person like a lot of drivers will entertain the right of the Wherever he went he did what he did the best in the city which is extremely high but actually the other stuff things like know his family and his personal life and in this instance you know the aftermath of this accident really that's the His him so it's a night they decide. What should and shouldn't be revealed and I'm like you know I think a few years ago some German magazine released details of saying that you know he was able to walk assistance and the family actually you know got a lawyer onto it that sort of you know say actually this isn't the case and you know giving a lot of people false hope and it's up setting the family that. They think the situation is changing when it isn't and you know I think that really people just need to back off and let Michael you know deal with the situation best he can there's a fresh tiger on Twitter called Keep fighting Michael and I've noticed that people are using that to send him birthday wishes which will be seen by his family and friends and you can they don't I'm sure but there's another side to this and that is whether or not people in the public eye have to accept that there will be aspects of their lives which will always be proved in this way. I think it might need for certain people to do that definitely put themselves out there naming no names I think you'll know who this will be fun thinking about people always giving. Interviews that their latest read the latest Wolski and I like they respond to those people I think they are they've made a pact with the devil as it were to parade that pistol goings on but I think really people like Michael even before he's actually you know always kept those areas up and I think that needs to be respected you know and I think not just Michael but Next are the people like that you know who are in the public eye who are essentially private people we could be curious because they were always curious and I think that people's interest this is that of well wishes I mean you know every is very shocked and saddened by what happened so I call in the wishes of all the best the same time this which is can be quite interesting is you know if if that's what pushed to fall how much support do they get I mentioned the Formula One managing director Humbert supporters available to him and his family in March they're going through well I would think that you know he's been very very successful as a racing driver so I would imagine that in terms of you know financial resources they can you do a full tide quality medical care you know physiotherapist and say 48 to to visit and I'm sure they've all had to sign you know binding agreements you know to not you know spread information about you know Michael's current condition and then hopefully the people close to him or also you know support each other. Those who genuinely wish him well and have no wish to intrude you know genuine fans of his who who respect him why do they feel that way about him what was it about him that earned him not sort of following Well I think he was really quite sad let me just say talking in the past tense What is it about what is it about him that is there and I think I think he was incredibly. You know technically skilled really really raised the bar in terms of what people were achieving in Formula One you know 7 times world record holder 91 race when you know even means in terms his race length he remains 18 clear of 2nd place Lewis Hamilton on the all time list so you know he is an old time legend and if you want to know more about him and his achievements the family have released an app it's called the official Michael Schumacher Act which they say will be a virtual museum of the driver's achievements I'm sure a lot of fans of the really institute look at that Maria McCarthy thanks very much 28 minutes past 6 time we had to farming news here's a name the prime minister used her New Year's message to our jam pays to vote her Breck's a deal through now this is an important issue for a local agri feed business as. Is the chief executive officer of Wilson's country he's been involved in the lobby groups who've petitioned local politicians gone to Westminster to encourage M.P.'s to vote for the prime minister has on the table because he says the worst case scenario is for the U.K. To crash site of Europe with no date and no data mains that fit business like mind that. Operate some 2 or 3 percent of turnover as profit there's tariffs of maybe 10 or 15 percent or maybe even 20 percent on some of the tuna products so products that actually come north to be processed and go back down could be actually have a 30 to 40 percent tariffs us just an absolute buyer tree it's just me and disaster Wilson's country supply potatoes to supermarkets they have more than 30 quarries working with them from both north and south of the border and for a business like Wilson's country where their product will cross the border several times during production having any type of delay is or tariffs will cause problems the big concern is that one 3rd of our business and. Valls our product crossing the border and what I mean by cross the border our product cross the border both ways we source about a 3rd of our product on the $26.00 countries when we bring it here for process and . I 3rd of our sales are bike and the 26 counties right across the 26 counties so we are back and forth across the border all day every day that was on this Wilson from Wilson's country and then peace will start to be a thing on the Prime Minister's Bracks a day from next week and we leave you with tonight's big breaking story in Spain revealed that the huge 115000000 pounds Euro Millions New Year's Day jackpot was scooped by a couple from Conti on their identity will brew veal tomorrow morning either 4th biggest jackpot winners in U.K. History Good luck to them TONIGHT producers counting Bush and Mary County goodnight . Thank you Seamus and you're very welcome on the day that the 1st close up pictures of the far side of the moon as seen on Earth looks a lot brighter than Pink Floyd seminal concept album predicted by Mary Louise Mirren this is the dark side of the art show tonight why many pop stars consider getting a Derek King as a badge of honor the mean and immobile city of London and Mortal Engines the collection of poems from playwright Lawrence with brown skin a guide as always on a Thursday. To get in touch. On Twitter B.B.C. Radio holster on Facebook a one double 71 for your texts no I for nearly 10 years team Phil part as their followers fondly call them have been on a Chris. Paid to write good old fashioned hours to pop and rock stars Derek started them and was quickly joined by some Dave everything from misunderstood lyrics to general confusion over chart hits the one thing neither of them expected were any replies The result is a compilation of over $100.00 letters and the replies called Dear Mr pop star. I notice that my dad had a fantastic knack of signed the most off the wall things about pop music on the basis that because he's an old man he didn't know what the hell he was talking about so whereas she will ride with us until record if it all might go the Saudis stylings Oh my God he got a seizure but door he was department black without all that many urine Clinch right that he put me on the cut on the Turned out and then you know they used to stuff like the billing to Carlisle Devon is a place so belated and I used to write down and always be entering rubbish and he didn't know if he was listened to a record by the road is starting to read from a band the rest in a shadow a mile away so he's decided me who is this is it doesn't doesn't matter who is dad and that he Hungry Like The Wolf welcome to be picky start the pad to what I just want about right let's get ravenous 80 why I did I TOOK THIS IS AMAZING So I just put these letters to get Arts Festival had to let is put them on a website thinking that was funny and now that we've faced some fanatical Facebook following a couple of days into the projects somebody's come back and said to me Oh you deny my friend cuts that pop stars head on you know you deny my friend is the to the past manager for that guy so we actually go around the back of the industry as it starts to get replies secured just by off by some of the time to take. I was very taken by deer causing crazy. Oh that's fantastic he wants to know really I just died in your arms tonight that the crux of it is that he says are just starting your arms and I and we said well we're pretty sure that we would have remembered actually kind of home and also. Because he said it musta missed something you said and we said you caught the parcel why from being told something unless it's really drastic and then we turned it into this it's Jupiter idea that you've actually been an actual in a cutting Crow and he'd been to have become part of the fumes doing debate ha you've said the I did raise that you are never allowed to listen to these recruits in this. And so when the guys started writing back it was not a bit of a surprise hope was the 1st letter that you got back the 1st one we got that was by God who paid to Hamill who was in a banquet Van de Graaf Generator and then after that we got a monumental reply back from Chile and reconfirm all about AIDS and then it started to snowball because the pop stars would be telling each other side to each other that you know like Nick show which side to Carol Decker if you get demented left from Derek and I doubt my rate it's a one of us it's going to be for any. Personal really thought about his reply Yeah he said my using it in a. He was in office because well and we said in the 1st book No Nick it wouldn't be good to be in your shoes because you obviously take a size knowing all right and we're a bit bigger than you and he said you can always put it out with some tissue paper so next reply believe we love it when they come back and they keep not not just as good as I've got but actually thrash us you know. That Katrina and the rains the sun. Came on Sunshine yes. We were worried about how she's able to actually amble on so I would write because we've actually had similar issues with Jones who claim to be walking on the yeah and also I met Jackie said that he said Hi you get off of my cloud and we said well it could be pretty hard to get on a trial but actually 14 throw Yeah most who didn't reply but we were lucky enough to get to train the wise but look at Trina on the waves God bless her I mean she came by and she basically kind of gave you a diagram of hi you can actually walk on sunshine that separate dates her replies so sometimes when we do or let's say the artist comes back with what it's really about so often finds our fans can go Oh my God that's sporty it was you know when you're Derek started writing them he started to slowly include you the sun kept getting mentioned as well how did you feel about you being part of his consternation over certain Larry well I thought it's quite important I got involved in the press in the right direction because if you had him on to die A.B. Good for TOF they eat out what happened recently was he said to me I started researching this band I said stop what you're doing because the less you know the better they say is that he needs to be kept away from. Exactly right absolutely right. Dave Stewart came back here but it's my party a great song from 1901 that's right because we was signed nobody knows where my Johnny has gone but Junior's death the same time and then he comes back and she's wearing his ring so we were signed obviously the shops a shock so they've been party so where did you find that was open so what did Dave Stewart say you're very very silly paper. Calling for the proper job. Yes How is your dad doing not on what's the next thing you're going to let him listen to a well when we start it was just a glitch or a question if I plug in my 5 records saw is plotting Divine Comedy who I adore and I was playing them on the tires just a few fingers and the old Northern Irish. Used to fold when Facebook started to control it they would then Sites who is look I've gone into tasteful face or I've gone into whoever said then it become cultivated so I would then play my data recognizing that was going to get a reply from that all taste as we become more and more notorious and famous for doing Nace date Chinese from records to I like to say to somebody sidewalk either is a lousy or I can get you so I was this is kind of become your full time job Dave I work I work in care homes as a singer in the diet so i'm But yeah if this is taken up more and more it's on them but I will say is that what I wanted to do these things so much in the care homes I like the song was a little bit more because I'm not with the artist as some of these people but I've become my friends now get I made that certain I haven't speed. Lindis fun excellent you know it just in a couple of ways to God because he claimed that folk on the top was all his and we said the possession of viperous matter is actually very very problematic this is. Gone. And if that doesn't put a smile on your face I do not know what will dear Mr pop star by Derek and they feel part is by unbind puppet. For she'd rather talk to a friend a valentine. That happened to her and is to find. To be a problem with anything like a mother. He's here. Here is and he signs a very hungry from the major motion picture Mortal Engines based on the award winning young adult fiction series from nearly 20 years ago certain a post-apocalyptic future the city of London is going all Mad Max it is on wheels stalking tines and cities and eating them up while Lord Of The Rings Peter Jackson is behind the creative vision of the film The book's author Philip Reeves revealed high he came up with the idea in the 1st place the eureka moment the lightbulb moment actually came after quite a lot of work has already been done because really all the way through the ninety's I was I was trying to put together some sort of story I wanted to do something on the kind of fantasy world building on this kind of scale of things like The Lord Of The Rings that I'd loved when I was growing up and I'd settled on a kind of slightly kind of retro sort of vaguely Victorian world full of strange contraptions and things and I had some characters and I had a few ideas of the sort of story I wanted to tell but I didn't really know what I was doing so I kept plugging away at it and eventually I decided he's a big thing in the middle some sort of big central core for the story to revolve around and I thought Well the biggest thing I could think of was a city on wheels and then the kind of needed to be a reason for the city to be on wheels you know why was it moving where was it going and I suddenly realized of course it would be chasing smaller cities it's a cannibalistic city that chases down smaller towns and cities which are also well on wheels and it pulls them apart to use the bits and pieces to make itself bigger and stronger and when I had that idea then everything else you know the whole thing started working at all fell into place but it was quite a lot of work went to do it before that you mentioned Tolkien and obviously the Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit both Peter Jackson and Fran wall too are responsible for those major motion films are not making Have No I made a film about Mortal Engines even in the wildest imaginations of Tolkien I don't think a cannibalistic said he would like. Up I think moving city is a sort of fairly common in science fiction I knew of a couple before I started writing and I've discovered a few more since but I think the sort of the food chain idea they consume each other is my contribution I think that's new I mean this was written was 15 years ago long I mean really I was sort of working on various versions of this all the way through the ninety's and I think I sort of probably wrote the final version in about $1009.00 and it was published in 2001 is this something that you were doing or consciously or unconsciously there will inevitably be some kind of social commentary that will go along with that people will impose their own ideas onto you know London as a roaming killer says he that the political world if we can't look at the newspapers and telly and radio without hearing about Bracks at a non-vote and in a way London roaming the plot of decimated post nuclear seems strangely prescient Well yes sadly it does and of course lots of people are sort of using this as a metaphor for bricks and things but you know clearly the fact that I was writing it back in the mid to late ninety's it's not you know but hopefully I think if you kind of come up with a with a world of an idea that it's got legs people will be able to use it to kind of pin whatever the current events Yeah are to clearly as an idea it's got some kind of analogies buried in it but I tried not to I didn't want to you know I was just trying to write an adventure story so let's talk also then about has Shaw she is the original rebel girl why did you want to make that particular character female was there a reason for it I mean I was very much trying to kind of recapture the spirit of a lot of the stuff that I know Joy when I was younger when I was writing mortal engine so I was kind of looking back at sort of the old adventure stories and things but I wanted to try and put my own spin on it and one of the ways of doing that I guess was to reverse the role of the hero. On heroin though I don't think I did it consciously but the hero is actually sort of quite a quiet well behaved young person who has thrown off of London thrown off of this mobile city and ends up having all sorts of terrible adventures in the in the wastelands of the track marks and meets this very feral sort of vengeful filthy ugly violent and apparently horrible girl called Hester who you know gradually as they get to know each other we discover that she's not exactly horrible she's and she's you know sort of brave and wonderful in many ways but yeah I guess really that's a sort of a reversal of what you get into the Westerns and things in that way you kind of have the the grizzled gunslinger and then the young heroine told me then of what the rights of the film rights were snapped up pretty fast but it took nearly 10 years from Peter Jackson buying the book rights to that actually making it to the screen was there ever a moment that it diluted that it was going to happen and have you seen the film or are you pleased with what they've done with your imaginative landscape Yes I have seen it I saw it the week before last at the premiere here in London and yes it's amazing changes the book in many ways it sort of uses the book as like a springboard and then goes off in its own directions but I think that's good really and had a patient I think you want it to be it's I wouldn't thing has become a world that even you didn't think would take off so much and it is huge star isn't it this idea of the the trucks in the air Yeah well it's a lot bigger than I ever expected it to be I mean when I wrote it I really was just writing it to amuse myself and I thought it unlikely it would ever even get published and then it got published and I thought you were a and then they publish it managed to sell the film rights to Peter Jackson who you know I met and said this is going to be his next film and then it wasn't his next film he went off and did the whole bit and then that turned into 3 films so you know at that point I saw thought well that's all who the that's never going to happen and I kind of finished writing about that world I went off and had lots of other things I've been doing all sorts of other books in the intervening 10 years so. Yeah it's been very strange seeing or come back really it's quite old you know coming here to talk about this book that I wrote so many years ago at the end of the day it's an adventure story isn't it and this is what people love to read yeah it's what I love to read it's what I love to read and certainly what I love to read when I was younger and it is it's basically published as a children's book I guess it's of aimed older children younger teenagers but plenty of older teenagers and adults seem to enjoy them as well I think there's always a going to be a demand for kind of a story that takes you somewhere new kind of takes you out of ordinary life and then takes you on adventure there. Philip Reeves and Mortal Engines the film noir and skull lastic of reissued Mortal Engines book one and also the illustrated world of Mortal Engines a never before seen visual guide to the adventures and epic battles of the series not where to go what to do a shiny new diary if you're like me waiting to be filled Well fret not a day is the must see minute. You're listening to the art show B.B.C. Radio Ulster on B.B.C. Radio 4 A with me Mary Louise MOORE It has just gone a quarter to 7 a poetry written while in prison and in the years after his release form the basis for Laurence McHugh poetry collection threads is a 2 parter 1st part deals with the H. Blocks and the hunger strikes of 1981 which Lawrence you took part 2. Poetry post your release in 1902 before we talk about the collection can you read a poem from much for us. OK more of those think you are probably here. A short one which is the title Buddhism I don't really have any religion but a faith of the heart of a person would be so reckless that you should practice buddhism be patient Oh others are process don't chatter scream let situations evolve order to all. Observe make eye contact regard sure Joe you should practice Buddhism then I wouldn't have to. I know he and I will talk about the political stuff in a moment but I know you mainly through the arts. As as a playwright and has a screenwriter as somebody who uses your political background to explore Northern Ireland not I post conflict. I haven't done as a poet so where did this come to. Well as I say in the book I think the portly workshops which we began back in the jail in 1908 really on least. Hold we have a creative devotee and all other projects accumulator of think arose out of the portrayal which began more by accident as a way of a pasta in the bone but it was also a way for us to or I found personally to make an observation never heavily involved in political education and like Adamic education want to portray it was a way of sense of the more personal and OK as hers at the even in the in the poems written during prison some are about prison situations but a lot I'm really about. Family death death of a parent's samplers because we're doing classes on that knows what swayed rings you know that 10 minutes it's still political but it's personal goals which is the family's model were you writing these poems in the So if I look at introduction of Solitary Man or liberation or let's silence where these breath they were referring not there right there in the bridges and then obviously then there are the ones poster release which is more of a myth times I'd want to jot something done and put it in months ago with Andrew to just kill and the editor of someone Portree Because bit contact with her way back 30 years previously and said OK I have some poems we want to take a look at them and she said to some it on a sample and I did they didn't hear from her for 3 months and I thought oh my god. A natural to say sorry but a lot of publications to get are so let's put the thing over the years of just on the wrist you know it was just moved by certain situations that I wanted to comment with as well as the politics and you were on hunger strike you were a hunger strike for 70 days and 1901 it was your mom actually intervened and and took you off and you will go up in a in a hospital you write about her very movingly and this is well it was not written again look at the time the modern day. Doesn't 2 years after the horse trade and. In 93 and it was by way of was as it says in the the Palma. To speak to her as someone who was a person in her own right rather than just been the mother of the person I knew. And who were never really I suppose I'd only significant conversation with because I was away from home shortly after 17 and probably always had a great closeness I think in the literal years were spent when she was 1st new president so. Yeah there's an art is a way of the portrait is a way to express those personal feelings rather than the very virtually political this is quite a long poem Margaret for my mother and you open up by saying I'm new to this my scale if it can be called such as yet much flawed and it reminds me of I mean it's it's almost while it's still a poem it's very much short story yeah on its own as well it's like a conversation or one set of conversation that I'm a Mormon or than reflect on all of our life and in our life are the moments of be hard to pick with the moments are obviously very difficult for. Such as me been sentenced to prison or or the time which would have been by my bedside during the worst critics of you say in 1081 you covered many miles on my behalf walked many road shook many hands until the day the struggle was brought direct to you you know what do you have to do and I know what I have to do he whispered at my bedside the resolution of 2 conflict impossibilities left in the hands of fate then you went off to kneel and pray amidst your tears and those are incredibly poignant and moving words did you find I mean even talk about when next we met the scars of that battle at deeply upon your face when you look back at that night and reading poach that poem in particular. What did that for that feel like. Well there's a set that read it probably not but not that I want to tell you so how many years ago in 1000 move up a city 3 needed rain your way to talk in the woods Well well over 35 years ago. I suppose in the literal years to realize the. You're living through moments but it's hard. Those close to you or if I could but it doesn't change how you see your own actions or whatever but. Yes become more aware of them part that I was on on those but I think that the list I probably did to Rick deteriorated her health to the level that today it is a bit just less than 2 years later I would love to read new people by now and in a way because of what you have gone 3 and the journey that that you've had. Have you done not have the have you thought about it as this but all the lessons you have taught some of the poems have been written the last year it was already up to the the end there are ones written at various times post $92.00 Yeah so yeah until the recent I think the whole collection even though where it's divided into Jordan president and after it is not I really think you can break them and assemble some of more just about prison or politics and Dollars aren't because even this is a the ones written during the time. It's a bit longings it's about the stars it's about communications but partners so it's . You know so even though they're written a particular brood or in particular circumstances I think it's Karrie or that will cover a very broad range of topics and just as time moves on and situation changes and. You're open to more experiences when the odds are there's more topics that you can I Julie read about on a different way than just the margining because this is very much writing from the imagination because you were inside and I always link up and all the powerful poem The Ballad of reading to by Oscar Wilde which gives you that sense of hopelessness and futility but at the same time like a heart soaring through the through the imagination as well Lawrence I'm glad that the data from Simon portrayed him back there a month was a bit of a heart stopping moment so you think whether there were other issues like that are not happy New Year thank you so much for coming in triads I Lawrence because published by some of poetry.
