News. Is one of. The. Good evening welcome to jazz world this is the last Friday night cover that means is the 1st night of the car chance Festival and it's a very special car Jazz Fest No we've mentioned a dunk for some of the highlights that are going to be happening allowed to release by Cormac Amoebe we had a one hour special with a few weeks ago the great bellied Chiles the grave frank with me all a trail here only car prices high begging pardon cork School of Music a huge room in there on a Sunday afternoon or for a long on Sunday night Bill a car bomb it's quite a lineup. And of course Stanley Clarke Well listen Stanley Carr we're not exactly sure how many of the musicians from this track are going to be there but he has very special guests on this from his camera saya Washington the sax player of the moment Paul Jackman Guitar Joe Walsh also on guitar Stewart Copeland on drums my goodness me at Russian. Sorry out there on piano and of course the man himself it's the only bass player from well let's just say sphere and from Return to Forever I mean East is just on some of the greatest albums in fusion and the last 30 years he is the man and this is a stunning carcass off tonight. See This weekend get yourself it's not over yet there's an awful lot on still to go. And I strongly recommend you do like this man a Grammy winner Billy Childs and what an amazing band including Claudio Acuna is not on this track but he's on the album and Michel I'm on trombone another guest but the band Well Steve Wilson on soprano saxophone Hans glass Nick on acoustic bass and current on drums water and I'm a zing mazing band anyway as composition as improvise ation through composing elements at all the contemporary traits are there as well as just that make nests and musicianship that makes the melody stride forward whenever they improvise Haitians are happening it's fabulous it's Billy Childs areas. Oh. Oh. Ah just extraordinary the level of intellectual ality and the improvising and remembering the motifs develop the main building them so gradually through the composition that almost improvise ation is composition itself absolutely superb Billy Childs and that's why he has an edge at the moment on almost anything that's happening these days Ok another man who really has separated himself from the contenders is the grit Cormack a Navy corpsman has been around for a long time has been studying jazz sings jazz sings vocalise studies interpretations of other people's solos and put words to them and he does so many incredible things that keep improving him on the national and international stage he works. M.s.b. Quite a bit it's had a very long established and quartet NY with himself with Johnny Taylor on piano very musical pianist Damian Evans on double bass Dominic Monaghan drums magnificent musicians to be honest the way they work together and he writes original stuff but sometimes he just does make Never some versions of existing songs and arrangements this one loves the composition ballad for Nelson but in many ways it's a tribute to Mark Murphy who made this his own this is karma can even quartet with stolen moments. Really. What it. Would you. Feel. You would someday enough. Love to know that. I can use. Pretty Baby. To Let. Your. You knew there was the power. There was the. Like I arranged and I know it's a long Irish quartet I say quartet and you probably noticed at there was a big drum solo going on Dominic one of the drums right a minute and a half there and this groove introduced by the bound by the voice became part of the rhythm section but still lead moments along following the at the chord tones of the piano on the bass Oh my goodness what a beautiful arrangement What a fabulous voice I'm what a great tribute to the great Mark referee still a moment's karma can have and of course tonic aren't going to chance karma can even the next guy as well all he this weekend as are most of the artists are playing the show tonight because of course it's cork Jazz Festival still time to get tickets still time to go online but your hotel's the time to go to bed tonight after this show and pack your bags and drive died in the morning and have what can be described as a world class jazz experience and Ireland thanks to the great Shanae done for his programming and giving core Jazz Festival such amazing life again and it's all kinds of jazz this time we're featuring the Frankford Nola trail I'm no stranger to Belfast I've been here quite a few times are wonderful wonderful guitarist and this is an album called Standards life and it's really musical and it's maybe set at old time but the some contemporary language going on that makes him a hit at festivals like this not just the way he presents the music but the way he brings out modern language to the order of context Well I can't think of a better example on this album this is stunning it's his version of jitter back waltz. In. Some. Quarters. All right the. Boss with the hour was already. On the. Road the us. going to go. 'd 'd thank you our Dr says Bill hasn't won a person for shutterbug waltz and Frank signaled a trio Frank even when they're on guitar of course he's going to be one of the stars core playing on the Sunday afternoon 2 o'clock at the cork School of Music which is of course one of the premiere of and used nightmare really is if you haven't been there it's stunning it's state of the art it's a huge auditorium that is just make me nervous simply balanced and terms of the signed of the room and that's a big big stadium like theater and one of them one of the highlights really suppose of Cork outside the opera house so wonderful session on Sunday after of course just her mind just on the car but he child's karmically Frankfurt you know well some still to come in the show the Stars this week and a car it's not too late it's on until Monday so. If you can just try and make an emergency Dr Dhar and drive back up again you're still probably catch absolutely loads of quality stuff. History with b.b.c. Northern not. Just Street this is a tool where 168. Most historians agree that if the trouble started at one time one protests they started here we are. In any podcast by b.b.c. Radio 4 and here I witness the cunts from the tiny piece run amok literally and start a button people Protestants trying to better away from the Catholic neighbors she did it was an absolutely a turning point 68 available now you say your podcast up. Ok I'm delighted to say that a regular slot noise coming into the show its mate the expert the expert just happens to be a Northern Ireland guy lives in a skill and you have heard him because we've talked about it with plug his website his website is one of the most significant it's certainly one of the quickest to catch a news story that there her is in jazz on the planet I know some of you like to go to the established names but this website Marlo Bank dot Nat Marl Bank dot net with plug in the show before it's an instantaneous find if you go to that website you'll find out who's playing where Hi good they are why the connections have made the festivals that are alive the artist with a northerner connection and of course the very best labels and musicians that people have never heard of that this man has researched and brought to the world his name is Stephen Graham and Stephen and I are going to do a regular slot once a month for well for the forseeable future where we get a little bit of a sideward glance of what's happening in jazz and a little bit of an insight that you will get directly from me and then entertain. I'm excited of the show that I try to present as well Steve is going to be bringing his fond of knowledge so I'm delighted to say we're kicking off tonight Stephen welcome to the show I Thanks for having me Lynn is great to be here and thank you of this all for this incredible resource that is that because it's very informative to all one of you the more you read abut artists of course the more you're able to capture the imagination that goes in that are making the music Well you know it's very much a real time sort of things as you know and it's great with the website you don't have to wait a month to read about it and sometimes there's a lag between you know when people write stuff and you know things have passed they're done you know so it's great to you know be on the crest of the wave as of where as much as possible. That's the whole idea of the off the side really has to be you know be there in the moment and you're in the moment of course because you're reviewing gigs as well so you actually go out of your way to attend those what's been hostile in the last month what have you spotted that you think is special attention Well there's quite a bit going on I mean I think that was the main event was the parliamentary Johns Awards recently which was over in central London at pizza restaurant last week and yeah that was interesting you know because a lot of people come come in you know people haven't seen for a while some people play sometimes the veterans are the ones who surprise you and that night it was Henry larger who is a famous trumpet player some of you your listeners will be familiar with these guys are still playing playing well you know it's not just a youth culture anymore you know sometimes you read stuff and you think Oh God you're going to be 17 or 18 to play this stuff but just isn't like that it's for the for the long game you know one day when you hear Henry and I there was a guy doing the charts Max Britain. It's great guitarist and I had never heard it before and I just think it got got so much to learn still you know and these guys have got it all yeah well it's and it's exciting that there is this hierarchy but we're all in the present at the moment and everybody seems to respect everybody else the musician ship I think that's a big change whether that's a result of your. Site and jazz ways and different magazines that are right there there seems to be a homogeneous approach to people where everybody is giving everybody a chance and supporting each other and I think social media works that way as well I think there's a real desire for people to be positive and it's not just being honest like tedious about it I think it's like basically the there is so much out there that's good and yet the big media brands because they've got so many other things that take priority I haven't got time for so people just don't actually know about it and I think sometimes when I ever the media wakes up on there's a big article say in the New York Times or you know. The Guardian or whatever. People something kind of 2nd the stuff spin around why didn't we know about this and it's like well it's been there. And you know on a scan stuff I think shining a light and you know that people are quite modest sometimes you know on the yet they're so talented well you do reviews as well of course that's so important because it gives an insight into the music what if you enjoyed reviewing the last 4 or 5 weeks Well I was slightly disappointed I must say with the at the new Keith Jarrett solo record which to be honest I was really I've been waiting for for months it is really I mean when I say I was a bit disappointed that still you know if you're John you've got here at this is that life in the chair which is the you know solo in Venice which is well. Yes. It's worth worth listening to but I mean I think in terms of stuff which I think is even better as this stand Yacob or old bag of Rainbows which I had the pleasure of interviewing Yacob recently and I mean he's a guitarist based in Copenhagen and he's got you a baron who used to be with Bill Frisell and he's got Thomas Morgan who is this to leave Superbad basis to him and has played with people like the Thomas doesn't go the lead Thomastown Co And you know I think we're going to hear a little bit of it later and listeners if you're not familiar then I'd just be deposited here yeah I'm not sure if you played in Ireland yet hopefully one day he will if it if well if we've just seen this incredible she made them and we know that. Is this weekend which is really really exciting and she's she's really on top of what's current what's hip what's great and I wouldn't be surprised if you dropped her and I wouldn't be sitting back and next year would be great I mean she's got my Schneider coming which is the 1st time an hour and that is huge anybody is into the elevons are a whole lot whole world a forecast. It's got to go to Couric even last minute to get down there if you get a ticket and so much else I mean I'm hoping to get along if I turn I am but I want to see ts monk Monk's you know some you know it's like he's there with a you know his own band I'm not sure who's in the band we'll find out later in the and the week I had the pleasure recently of doing some liner notes for an unknown monk album which came into 1963 unbelievable and he's here Monk playing buddy and so you know solo in this little unusual venue the Sun signs just knocked your eyes you had really you know it's I mean it is and you know and yet this is some as they're telling you know doing so much still for jazz in the states with the funniest Monk Institute and so on he's going to be an art and just another great name that's his book for this year yeah Stephen what about the young ones coming through anything you've spotted the really exciting I mean the. Energy of all these live gigs that are actually happening in the u.k. . It's it's so they're having to watch them coming through other obviously following in the line of some of the great educators like Gerard persons or things like Bob who have set such a really really high mark we look at Mount Sinai orchestra Paul both and we look at the level of those session players that like Ryan Quigley and things like that obviously those are more all rhymes this is for the Jazz lines but the standard is so high isn't it certainly is I mean I mean over in England people like theone Cross who's cheaper player with sons of Kemet who is going to be doing his own record in the spring and I was I think someone thought the cup maybe slow the label yet but not quite exciting. Over here we've got some new guys coming through and this young guy actually from my home time and I regale us really making a bit of a name from South locally I went to his deputy back in little cafe back in the spring and inside go I think him and his band The Bourbon Street trio they're going places they're really quite young and yet they're all souls in a way and they're on the show next week and will be on video next week actually because they're playing live this year for so that's exciting Yes it is and it's cut it's kind of it's good to remind ourselves that jazz just isn't the Belfast or Derry based thing it's a province wide and said global thing and I think the internet means that you know no scene is better than any other you know you can be watching somebody on You Tube I mean remember Jack Collyer a few years ago you know it's like in his bedroom with all this kit and then suddenly Quincy Jones is knocking on his door you know and it's like you know it's not a case of oh you live in or emote part and you're stuck in your you know good but that was never the case but people kind of thought that I think and I think now we're far more better informed well. That is a really good place to be better informed and if you want to try to make that a regular slot by reading the weekly he changes they even really upgrades up very quickly and you can go into it every couple of days and there's more articles for you to read. But of course that's just too much of a stretch for you because you're so busy but you can shoot in once a month because he's going to be our regular source on font of what's new hot hip cool and all those things and you asked David Graham thank you so much for joining us and we are going to play the track that you have recommended for us this month which I just for my me again I buy this incredible it arced Well yeah bro I mean if you think back it's kind of what I would call new cool school and he worked with. Bill Frisell he's worked with Paul he's worked with Lee Cohen it's He's one of these people he's just got a natural flow about him and when you hear him play you know what I mean it's like it's got all the space in the world and yet he's just an improviser and he surrounds himself with the bass so he's with Thomas Morgan and he's with Joey Baron and all I can say is enjoy let's enjoy Yacob bro Stephen Graham thank you so much for joining us or you're welcome. or 'd or. When. You're. Poor. Jack as recommended by our regular co-host Stephen Graham. Ok another lady who's performing on Sunday and she really is an exceptional talent her voice her ability to improvise the way that she alters a melody the 2nd time around of course the musicians she works with she's multi Grammy nominated she's an amazing progress and of course she's one that is a particular favorite of mine which means you'll have heard her on the show a number of times and it's hard to believe that she's going to be performing in our in this week and her name is Nina free lawn and this is just in time.
