Cycles I think I had no response. Good people running 030385555 the man whose job it is to keep the buses and trains running and a lot more public transport boss Translink chief Chris come way on Talkback today taking your calls welcome Chris good after the n.t. Good afternoon if you've been in this job now just going up 2 years now what in what has changed lots of changed over the last 2 years in terms of our vision to really transform public transport and we've got projects on the go no I 2 and construct a Belfast transport hubs in planning and you Northwest transport hub and very long story is also in planning and we've kicked off a new project now I To an investor you ticketing system I'll start to thought in it Taina be rolled out over a number of years to implement a new technique system. And we've also grown passenger numbers over the last year we've grown past your numbers by over a 1000000 and you passengers using public transport over the last year so great progress towards what we need to do still a long way to go but but a good start and yet you're struggling financially you support last month suggesting you need an extra 12000000 pounds in 2900 just to keep operating the services at the current levels what's going on with well I mean public transport is an essential service for helping to go economy for connecting people to jobs to health stage occasion and all of Eichel services and we operate across subsidize model in Northern Ireland whereby our sort of commercial routes subsidize or are noncommercial routes and also very effective use of taxpayers' money because it means that the overall subsidy trying to get is a lot less than the u.k. Regions about 50 percent of what is a chief dollar regions However you know socially necessary rich have to be wrong and and and to do it out what's normally what government normally does is pay as a public service obligation to do it out and these are rich which are used for. Or carry on and people emotionally who don't have access to any other mode of transport So for example are talking to young people you're talking about people with disabilities and you talk to people on low incomes who are vital that they have access to public transport and those routes have to be subsidized by government Tom Ferguson on Twitter is not so impressed he says why do Metro have to pay over the odds for journeys to subsidise northern railways and they choose he says they choose to live outside Belfast yet Belfast people have to pay well I mean across all today's model as I said is a very effective way to fund public transport and you're looking out in the region for Northern Ireland as a whole and we do try to keep our furs low within not and are not part of the reason why we do need the additional subsidy to make sure we maintain offers at a competitive rate if you don't get that you know put the 1st up no we what we do with our furs is we keep it at a competitive because we want to grow public transport we want to grow a number of people using public transport we do a number of independent surveys which measure also against you know our our closest neighbors which we the public of Ireland on the u.k. . And we do some competitive benchmark in Europe as well and that shows that we compete very well with with other regions in terms of our our furs and public transport 030-308-0555 extension 5 you calls for Chris Conway were lining up a lot of people want to talk to you today will go 1st and very high and Hello go ahead and I'll question for Chris hello. My son. And I travel to Queens then the smoke. From there. Because station and I run up to higher price for the month for students these are that's are just fees for students and I was there was. 100 per mess but as my son was 25 I may. Be 16 to 24 and I don't know why I'm interested. To qualify for the. This kind he is a student he's a mature student he is a student Chris what does he get that we have to set these we don't get any subsidy from government for giving people the over 16 bridges fer So what we do in Translink is we try to give a discount and we set that this kind of the but a 3rd all for a while and card and reinjured it typically uses $16.00 to $23.00 we would stretch out a wee bit to just over $23.00 and where you can get that and but it was one of the things that you have to decide with a cut off as in we don't want to really didn't know if it's about students and helping students you've got a student here who's $25.00 why not make it roll related rather than age related Well students cover a wide range of you know whether education and final and everything else you could be lots of different ways so we set it for young people on why it's called y. Link and we and we just decided a threshold I again it's something we compare a lot of people do 21 those are cut off we've actually structured up to 23 and so you can get you know right up here 24th birthday. And it's just a decision we've taken those 2 words right just to cut it off I mean obviously in this case that doesn't work for this particular partner but for a Lots of all the people and not a huge group I mean our whiling cardinal has grown significantly lots of people using it and you get 3rd all through the across a real boss network want to go back on that yes. My son should have had the way like 22 years ago and that's great but you know he wouldn't even make it better. I think at this point it's very difficult for us decide where the cut off would be and I think as I said we use benchmarking and we use competitive day to decide where that should be and at the minute I'm afraid on the thing we set up and we hope that there are other offers would say you know if your son he could also get a smart card which can still get 30 percent off a lot of travel in you get you know you travel you get off peak travel you get a 3rd off of peak on the rail travel on on the bus network and you can get a smart card which will give you 30 percent discount so that might work for me thank you very much great 1st call we're going to Brian Brian O'Neill actually from Sligo to who was on the program a while ago I Brian good to talk you again I'm Irish resident question for Chris My question is why is there no direct express bus services anywhere in Northern Ireland and by direct I mean get on a very Whatever get off of fossil flights stopping anywhere between Point to Point Yeah so we operate. As a stage carriage sort of service in the majority of cases across north now and that's our contract with a partner for infrastructure and we operate thought to the benefit of the majority of people in Northern Ireland so that everyone can get access geographically and everyone can get access and to the services am not on a goal line services which would tend to be more directed than a standard Ulster bus service we also offer an express service as well and you you notice it because it has an x. Before it and we do 2 services. Right across the network now an express service in Bos terminology is anything which is more than 30 miles and director and you know and with the door closed and quite a few of our express services do you offer that sort of express or do you still haven't answered the question of why do you know that I mean if you're saying there's at the bottom for example you have a box that we are far from. There so why for example do you not have one bus on the how far which is to stop and then you know continue to normal service you know and they are so. I don't figure out a good point in question here no I'm not a monster in the question and not we have a number of golden services which are reduced so you know limited stop services right across North not only full stops and we also have what are technically defined as express services operate in across northern and you know if I pick any of them city almost For example there's an express service woman the mornings which is direct there's an express services from from other times yeah but we have a dairy Belfast relationship we're trying to grow that really and you know me the 1st and 2nd cities of northern Ireland should we have a point to point direct bus service the service in Derry New most of the stops and very actually pick up in Iran very silty during the day on a galvanised just outside during and in the can down the road and you'll stop and given an in a 6 press all the way to Belfast but it's going to wrestle very well if it suits the majority of people in terms of what they want to do and what we are is you know you've got to remember that transit is effectively running a social enterprise here what we're trying to do is provide a service for the majority of people in Northern Ireland and we have to do that service on were contracted to do not and such when you're still not so there's nobody in Derry wants to get on the bus drifted off to go to my. I'm saying that there's Jim at the demand that's there is met by our express service and these are areas you don't get the money to turn it of them on it is met then why are you talking alternative providers for about 3 routes just that I read about if you think that your services look good Translink doesn't block and I think you're talking about something which has to do with apartment infrastructure and the licensing commitments. Brian thank you very much text here from a nun named person who's a bus driver. Doesn't want to go on the program but he does my throat is boss today but he has a concern how about cutting 0 tolerance to drunk passengers getting on buses I think lay in a long road I won't give you the road this driver is working on it is a longer road they're such a disruption to other passengers and they're a danger to drivers as well what are you doing about drunk passengers Well I mean obviously we have a commitment to provide a service to everyone in Northern Ireland and you know we do have services around and even people want to go and socialize and then they want to come back and use the service Now obviously if somebody is you know there's a fine line between someone appropriate to use a service or someone and too drunk to use a service and obviously we'd be concerned about thought and not as an area that we continue to focus on foreign policy where we're doing lots of things across the real that work at the minute in terms of you know we were fighting for example with body comms for some of our conductors and we've very good relationships with p.s. And I for both boss on real if there's an issue you know a driver can get touch with control and control and can get a good piece and I involved and it is it is a careful balance that always has to be managed but I think through good and working with the p s n i good working with our security staff because we do have some private security as well on the network and good working with our staff as well and we're also working with Pierce and I in terms of giving our staff some training about how to deal with substantiations one of the bus drivers here says it isn't working well it's something it's some we have to continually focus on and I think particularly when and people are asking us for services later in the evenings and it will be something that we have to address and thinking of which text here can we get services until midnight during weekends place is the 21st century Well Culture Night on Friday is when we are experiment a little bit more as later services that we have services run until midnight into 1 am not is really. You know I get opportunity for us to experiment why this works and coming up to Christmas this year we're also going to run for the weekend. The Thursdays and Fridays and Saturdays coming up to Christmas the 1st 3 or 4 weekends before law we're going to run some later night services again to pilot them and see how well they work but the previous caller you know evidence we have to you know protect our staff as well most importantly we learn how to do that and we provide proper training for it takes a 1771 umbrage I'm reading out some new text questions as we go and we're on Twitter a busy talkback The number to call many people calling it right now 030385555 your calls for Chris Conway from Translink Allan's next in South Belfast Hi Alan. Thank you I'm one of those well before she brought up you know go. Back to the panel. I have the back problem. Thing I find was that I've only. Been there. Before up on the chair. Of the debate on the on the market bank but you know when you know they go up thinking before not conditions of courage oft times like say that. Electric back on a train so that's the question electric bikes why doesn't translate a lot of them on the trains Well I have to say I'm not exactly into the detail of the specifics around Allegro price obviously we do allied bikes on the trans after $930.00 and there's a limit as to money we can hold what we do encourage people. If they want to take their bikes on the only don't you I'm good thanks I think it depends on the size and the high much room that's going to take up I mean obviously we do have serious for. Quite small it is the driver asked this question right not on a train typically on a train you're put it on with the conductor there obviously want to reach capacity then they could doctor how to say there's no more capacity than you would be would with for the next train. And you know without that you're saying you treat electric bikes exactly as other bikes I'm not a were frustrating like to bikes different from for more detail I start off to patients a service if you want you know what. Have a look at the conditions of service he's saying on your website and it excludes electric bikes I don't I think that's something we have to check just to see you know what I'll point in time that was once one storm I could. Help in sort of the commute. I'm late select pick from the old Think You Can Make It sounds like. We talk to the college it may be to do with you know just see if the in terms of you know Bob Griese and those types of things being on a pottery and boundaries are still in the. Can I run them but very sales nation should do this with some object for you Alan thank you very much Chris Conway's pledging there to have a look at those terms and conditions and maybe they will change who knows over time Joan and done Donald Hello jump Hello William and your question is for Chris I'll be 82 years old after my next birthday I'm not telling my age. So my question. Are drivers trained to give time to senior passengers to get to their state before they take off. And tell them to enter the date on their backs and Joan have you had a bad experience bad experience with him. Past the. Passenger hamster The driver should indicate to them the 3rd a little worse thing or a person who needs time to get the state. When it sounds like you minded being tossed about the buffalo by where I was traumatized I have to wrist up for 2 days like it or my car's been off the road and I had occasion to take the bus for terror 3 weeks and I've searched other elderly Paypal's place in their balance before they got their states because the driver took off the strafer took off that's paid I mean I'm a driver said earlier my I know her had to take off from her break they're doing the same whenever they stop the bus for you to get off. This is not a new problem I'm sure I understand the time frame that drivers are up against having to get back to the depo not searched but surely there must be some balance to give and then that a person had a health and safety issue thank you very much thank you Joan 1st of all I'm sorry to hear that you had a bad experience to am Joan certainly we do train our drivers to do a high standard and in terms of exonerating off from stops in terms of regain and we do you know to train and also follow up we do have a a management system on the bus where we can follow up as well and find out how hard and the drivers exhilarate are just a matter of looking through the marriage is real people are seated before you drive Yeah it's taken it's there is a balance sometimes you a lot of people getting on and from the 1st people going on to the other people in on you can't always tell exactly protect you in the upper floors when everyone is seated but there is training provided for Ladan it is something not and I'll certainly take back your feet you are liable if an elderly person falls well if someone has an accident on our service obviously they can they can put in a clean room but it is something I would take feedback on June to make sure that the training we're providing is adequate and also to make sure we're maintaining management systems to follow up on a Jones thank you very much great call incidentally with check the terms and conditions on your website and you do exclude most rice cycles so that would be electric bikes along with scooters mopeds all in that category are not permitted on trains at any time so that's something you might be looking at if you say Danny's and west Belfast Hello Danny Hello thank you for taking my call and I like to speak to Mr Conway about this service we have here fat from Queen Street it's a number anyone trying to grab Marsh and feed road we haven't had a service in a store for over 20 years and the last day Mr Conway was on the program spoke to him about it and he said he would look into it but here we are some panel and I asked almost on the service so. I wonder what he could savage that Chris. And I say if you again so obviously I can't get into specific details out of Citigroup I'm not aware of the new number of passengers on that route or our high Well it's used there are options and whenever the team reviewed it they did look out and they felt it was adequate options for passengers and at the at the at the current time and what we do is we run these routes based on a contract from the Department for infrastructure and if we want to you know change route routes it's something we have to view them in terms of the overall budget and at this point time it was and felt that the and it was so that was something we could do right now and when you say options you mean they can walk to a nearby Rio You know they're just out of what is a nearby route Dunny I don't know well I mean that's quite a considerable distance away especially if someone's You have someone who is as a walk in problem or a Coke walking you have to bring your own car I got a taxi and certainly there are people in a bus process that money's on 6 days a week I mean that option is not really an option not you know what a quarter of a male and then you're straight that's ridiculous that's coming here well done it's and we will keep under review as I said something about the last payment to contract no I know but but the funding if you like comes from the part of infrastructure so we didn't fight these routes with possible leads and obviously we do operate a reduced service on a Sunday and because there just isn't the same number of people use not the hundreds of people necessary come get it on a Sunday that. But the public transport is a vital service for people you know right across the area but we can provide a service we provide coverage to run to break we've got a service to write about iti over 80 percent of the don't work in Northern Ireland but we can't provide a service you know 100 percent there are other services that have to fill in those gaps Danny thank you very much going to move on because so many people have questions for Chris come way Davey's next and west Belfast Hello David Oh yeah my question is I was a warning that there are not so long ago I got onto a bus and points thank you Shorty face and I was on another group of tourists in stop and I was wondering why did. The northern coast of us not yet understand because going to go for a couple of stops and pay the. Average well stuff Well we in the metro service we have 3 sort of zones so we have the extended zone the city zone and the enters own so and I can't go into the exact pricing of each of those you'll find the money to pay more calls the further you travel you pay more for the extended zone you get your. Principal a standard it's pretty standard a lot like going and different companies do it and do it different whereas in terms of how they do it there be no way would there Davy of being able to charge someone for one stop rather than say for 5 stops However there can be. Just one price to do they do it in England for where you can get in for one stop Yes but the price now your one stop it might be taken for 4 stops. But if you're going to go any further not a manager not big group they have like 60 or 70 pounds right so they use his own system that well as that's not the same as always estimates in Belfast were you there coming up say the shadow room did you have to get off at Agnes street of the honors Oh. You can go right up to the very end of that stop for a month for a cup or just extra Yeah thank you very much Danny Wallace there in London Dario Well this. Good afternoon good afternoon so your question for Chris coming up question is available and my wife is as we say is the least fair to get to Belfast for example he lost 24 pounds in order to secure a bus that will accept early care why is this. So we have a policy for disabled people who need wheelchair access am only army and urban services that they actually because a lot of our city services are low floor vehicles so they can use those at any time and but some of our interview services picky coaches and don't have low floor on all of our coaches so we request a call just where we can check to make sure that there's availability there typically 24 hours what we offer but I mean literally if someone gives us a call we'll do our best to make sure there's availability for how quickly can you and we you know if we know in the morning we can technically do it that day. A lot of the times the coach is already available and that's fine it's just to be sure that we don't put a coach on that doesn't have wheelchair access it's not unthinkable your situation is that we have to call the bus company in advance to get it should all your buses be I sounded right across the service if you look up any bus company right across the u.k. And Ireland you will see the same type of requirement am night bus particularly large interurban coaches haven't always been low floor you'll notice that the recent batch of buses that we brought in and have a little floor on them and as we go forward we'll buy more and more low floor and coaches and but at the minute all coaches are accessible but you just need to make sure that they and the states have been removed from the appropriate location and before the coach travels but as we go forward and either buy new coaches and that will become less and less of an issue I'll take another text question he'll come back to the call the 2nd Alan s. Are there any plans to get an op like there is in Dublin the bus system that there which allows you to see where your bus is on really have that with taxis these days it will do what you can tell the taxis just half a half a mile away making its way to you can kind of follow it up a little mob and he plans to do Ari journey planner. Real time information on it so way it doesn't have to shoot him up but it shows you the time from the stop you're out where you're coming to you can also know I we have all our data on Google maps so you go into Google Maps and plan your journey as well and you'll be able to see real time past your information on Google maps as well so I think there's a cup. Options are for people to see and you know where their bosses and atrocities to them so in effect already their innocence is already there may not even want to May now be in and do the work with it sounds enormous. Hello Chris simple question why can you not buy a ticket on board a train where I'll give you an example last Friday I was boarding experience reporter trying I wanted to board a train from Puerto dine I got into central belt clip Victoria Street station the train was up a platform was a massive queue chaos asked a security guy so the tech master could I purchased my ticket on the train because I was a conductor on the train the answer was No I had to stand at a queue after chaos and lo and behold it's limited private and I Milan and I then why on earth do we have conductors that sell tickets on the trail but yet you're not allowed to use them. Well what we've what we try to do is operate what we call a closed system so that everyone gets on the system and how to take up in a conductor as a backup if you're on a halt which doesn't have the ability to actually buy a ticket in a situation I guess I would have hoped and staff would help you and your not certain a standard we'd sort of ask our staff and I can tell you I can hear you Chris your staff were anything but helpful when I asked the question of the chaos I got a very I don't say really dancer but I got one that was more than well it wasn't very pleasant Well you know we're very high standard for staff an apology some of this occasion we didn't meet our standards and and I don't think I'm going on the stand the Russian I Why can't the guy in you I asked him could I go because the train was about to leave and I made him aware of it and I was in a hurry but the cooperation was you know Ok Well let me not so now I'll certainly take up most off we set a very high standard but now there is an option you can buy your ticket on and link appreciate you have to have diluted the op beforehand but you can dine with a name like up you can buy your ticket on your mobile phone so your advice to that conductor would have been help the guy help the guy out you know maybe go in make sure the conductor knew to do some cool and all that needed to purchase a ticket you know or not that's what we would try to do some in normal circumstances some Thank you for your call Tony's there and very hi tony Well I don't he go ahead my question are the purest and French. Written on the bus and of course there were across the street treatment. And all can go well or trade off the clock when your name. Sorry Tony if you're standing across the street the driver is across the street on the apple and also has an adequately should none of the ever when it comes right down when I pay for the postage due to a little move Well the they were your drivers work shifts if you like they don't work like a taxi driver and feel like they work a shift if you mean but they do and they are required to you know to be out there standing at the right into the right time in time you have a point look at your attorney should never put the incident on the temple Yeah I mean you would you saying Tony if he would let you on the bus on til that exact moment yeah he comes on the ball and I was standing in the rain Yeah why can't you sit on a bus with driver that trade off a clock when they should be able to he works a shift there's not an off the clock approach to it if you like you know he is on a shift and but he will be doing checking work so there's things he has to do for example he has to be on the boss he has to check with control where he's gone check is great there's a certain safety checks that he has to do before he starts the journey so he'll be doing those types of things before he starts or you'll end up past you sitting on the bus with the driver on the bus No that's a real you know Tony thank you very much David North Belfast Dave Hi there just a question for Mr Conway current been. Getting really an adequate response back and I've been trying to find out I'd ask rate the complaint whether that's right a letter directly Mr Conway or several times and I have any advice on what well can we ask 1st Dave how long is the complaint been in the system this would have happened. By 3 weeks. Ok so am did the way it works really is you put your complaint in and you get a response if you're not happy with that response the sort of standard response would be and you can go back and ask for further clarification or not and but you can also ask to the consumer Consul on the consumer constable take up your complaint on your behalf the company escalate it within your system before going to the can he can do that although it is a limited amount of games that I can handle on a on a daily basis but the system allows you predicted and you can ask it within the complaint system and you can say you want other people to look at it as well and certainly that will be done on and ultimately you have the right to go to ask if someone puts a complaint in what do you what are you telling your staff and terms of their response how quickly should they be responding well we normally have we spawned as quickly as we can begin to panic you have until you have a limit as well we did it has to happen within 10 days or 2 Yeah we would end up within 15 days if we would like to have a response but I think what Dave's reason is maybe that he's not happy with the response if you like and then you sort of start the clock again to look at and if there's any further investigation but ultimately you have the right to ask the consumer comes days time we work with one of our team before you go there off air and tell us what the complaint is made we will escalate it for you 030385555 Martin's a bungalow Mark I think I'm your question for Chris Martin. I have a question. Like why do they not operate and degraded coordinate services between buses and trains if you specific example Martin that you want to reserve Yeah Ok Bangor to Belfast I used to commute every day and it was only by happy accident that I was able to get a bus. To meet a tree in both ways on my commute it wasn't by design this timetable I can assure you. Why did you not. And create a coordinated bus and 3 in the service especially of commuter rapes of a peep crying you heard of integrated bus and rail stations the buses a military and single seem to operate just totally separately from each other I thought the experience many times arriving in the buying or station in the trans been about 3 months to get. A local commuter bus leaving the station every day and thereby a dozen people or more in the train could be using that bus but they went with it so so Martin we do operate an integrated service and not we do shadow all of our servers an integrated way with the team all of. Us you appreciate it we've got 12 and a half thoughts and services every week every day sorry that we know we run and were possible we try to integrate those the real network Excel self in terms of the time table and is very. Very costly in terms of user work crossing signal lanes all of that the bus network excels is also put together best on your posture Demond where we feel the most need is but if the train is delayed and not boss could be picking someone up further down the road at a particular point in time we can't necessarily who's the boss of the bike. Because I thought I question why I don't do. Any degree that's integrated bus and train service work together if a tree in isn't it for example lot of people coming home in time and the evenings if a tree as 3 or 4 minutes late why doesn't the bus we have for that's And the great service where you pay how many many other countries where it was simply because that bus network is also picking someone up further down the journey which we can't . Expect them to accept the delay because of the what you can do however is going to journey planner it's an integrated journey planner plan your journey will show you what the different options are Twitter question here from the vendetta suite Why is the Metro and else to bus service so imbalanced in the how far I wait for one packed blue bus to odds there are $5.00 to $6.00 metros passing by. And so a math question. So I mean the metro service designed to give high frequency and reliable they are raw in the sort of urban area of Belfast were a large number of people are travelling and the Ulster boss services are really picking people up from the. I'm much wider area across New York Northern Ireland a much more rural network and on the frequency would be last not cases in terms of utilizing the service so it's really. Really an economic as well as a bright in the best service for the people who live in those areas back to the phones Jeanette is there in South Belfast I read them my question is why is there a lot of fun can this regard as being allies on Korean or both especially whenever they were trying to curry serve some. People are being called up to the drivers this crash. Think I've got a problem with this John but if you go on to this if the floor that are a dog lover you know finds a lot of people all the people you know want to take a small pet for example on the young and we have a policy and which I live for companion pets particularly to be tell you I want you to marry your dream and you know it just is just it's just a term I mean just small but rather than a rock while on the road. And. The policy is very consistent and it's very consistent again we can benchmark it right across the industry how many people how many pets are allowed on a bus at any given time I couldn't honestly answer that I would just Gresham Well I mean typically what we say is that the pet must be you know well behaved kept at the passengers feet and not taken up another seat and that's typically what we're water policy covers and we just nice pass we have we have we have to have discretion because you know there can be a situation where another passenger occasionally another passenger will maybe be afraid of dogs maybe some allergies and the driver has to exercise can say can. Discretion adopt point quick response for Janette if you're there go ahead I just don't do that they actually look you know if you look at the dog over there I hear a lot of people have heard the way I was very disappointed you know whenever a lot of polled restaurants are becoming more friendly and more confident and are what I'm and I want to say well I don't have a very were small animals but they avoid with their own I mean sort of like a caged off area well like it well yeah what I would think I'd ask you know would be if there are complaints people need to be and I mean one of things I did check before come on only I'm sure was a many complaints we've thought about this in the last 12 months and where you would expect to be very few so if people in or on Facebook saying that the father Spirit's police can play in a not the way you know we improve our viewers that question because I got at the last time I was. I thought on the dog lovers you know thank you very much for bringing that question to us Harry's text into question Harry nods I used to get the train to go run for Belfast the conductors were fantastic stopped about a money in the conduct to help the blind person do a nearby gate that the train was stopped for several minutes that uplifted my life says Harry watching that happening well done just that now you are expecting a complaint no complaints and I know it's thank you I am and I do say always we do set a high standard and majority of cases our staff are do you know performing strongly Well in terms of customer service in terms of how they perform the service and notwithstanding there are occasions when we can do better and we want to learn from those that's going to finagle and Brian Hi Brian good afternoon McLaughlin Chris Brown just Christobel tossed out Robert Frost court system. This is the structure as been putting players at that moment and yeah either way you know gold or rather they're not having a 3rd party. And what they're basically doing is and the actual west Belfast also on this turn will probably one of those just rules and dock cost on the sadness that they create a castle Ray and or $2.00 very busy roads that's going to be narrowed and practically torn up 40 and ruled and you're truly en route is going to be no part and so there's people who want to buy parts does a supervisor want to soccer as well it's classified as a result of this rather transport service but the source from some services may be closed with every payoffs. So it is out the question Bryant is the last piece or well basically to question. At this moment there's a run to put on this term little town the way well used to be around a great one Don I have sticking around a bit away and the tropical ace and it's causing chaos back off for me on the street all right especially early in the morning Ok well almost to the road yeah so and only if you mean the road network is all to be implemented by the part of infrastructure and transit will be operating the their up a transit system or not road network and I think you know in the wider context you know one of the biggest challenges we face really over the next decade if we want to continue to grow our economy and we want to drive efficiency across our public services we really need a major shift in terms of sustainable transport in terms of people moving from car to to public transport to bike to walking and to other modes of transport and you know our rubber trance system is a great step forward to get initiative for us to do that you just got to look at the Lewis and Dublin and you can see the benefits that brings to Dublin and we see the same benefits coming to Belfast with a rapid transit system and there are always compromises and things that have to be designed this but the model shift is very important for us a lot of the concerns are issues that people have there's lots of consultation events going on and they will continue to go on over the next year to try and deal with those trying to meet and ways that we can we can satisfy those but ultimately I think Belfast people will be benefit from this quick fire and I want to get some text questions and if you can answer them very quickly would be great Could you ask your guest why there is drink allowed in the Belfast Dublin train but no drink is allowed on the dairy to Belfast right and we don't lie any drink on our local services whatsoever and the only service that we allow alcohol as their enterprise service cross border because it is it is used you know a lot of times for for social reasons I use the bus a lot think the metro is frequent fast and good value says Alan My only complaint is around cleanliness I often have to move litter of sump. Move seat you to food and drink spillage is what your policy on the litter approach to keeping the buses and trains clean well they are policy is overnight we do a thorough clean of all our bosses and make sure they're ready for service the next day and of something that I'm very passionate about as it is making sure buses are clean and ready for service during the day and with high volume usage they can get later done not something again we have just invested in putting some additional staff around the city hall or to actually go on and try to clean buses during June service but it is so mind conscious off and so on that we want to continue to improve and I think is the most common question into the program today is to do with night time services and what I mean it's impossible people say to have a night at Belfast's a come back on a train to Lisbon or Lurgan or size a joke and the 21st century people don't understand I have to emphasize I can read that question over and over again but it is probably the most common complaint that we're getting into the program Jimmy and you counsel says is that translate both to where there's no bus service between are nearing on a Sunday and why not Sunday we offer operate a reduced service which everyone's aware often not mean in this case 0 service and some cases up means it means that the service you know if there's an alternative service close by which can be used and but you know both Sunday services on night time service is an area where we feel there's opportunity to do better on if we can improve the investment in public transport I think we can do something there. Thank you very much I got one final text from Pat and he says your service from and to done Gannon is excellent great staff and done Gannon careful professional driver says pot who's a senior citizen frequent passenger as he describes himself his congratulations to you and your staff a lot of people are very grateful for just the the human contact that they get with staff members and some of them people saying that they become friends yes they see them on the regular buses and train routes and people use their 1st name in the likes of Chris thank you very much thank you well I was reasonably painless reasonably painless I would do it all again some time later in the year after early next year because people love bringing their questions to thank you very much and will update any changes you're able to make on the Late Night services for us you will be the most popular person in all of Northern Ireland if you can get a bus that goes after midnight 030-308-0555 extension 5 he continued calls to talkback this lunchtime 81771 for you Tech someone on Twitter at b.b.c. Talk about going to tell me fake news and alternative facts that. . That is always half a world away 030385555 it's 10 minutes to one and a world of fake news and alternative facts who do you trust to tell you the truth about the world there was a time when the obvious answer to that question was the media the press or even journalism but now we regularly hear even on this program quite often claims that the so-called mainstream media. Far from revealing the truth about the world is driven by its own agenda it's lying to us it's part of a fake news industrial complex feel that those are the words incidentally of Donald Trump's former advisor Sebastian Gorka So here's a question for you who do you trust how do you get a handle on what is going on in our own society here or in China or Russia or North Korea or the United States who do you trust to tell you the truth about what is happening in our world John Lloyd is with us he's one of Britain's most distinguished journalist and his new book is The Power of the story the glory the global battle for news and information John good afternoon so welcome your afternoon and I'm delighted to say you'll be joining us in our month Stuart b.b.c. Id's ideas weekend all of you are in the 15th of October I'll get more information about that in a moment we're tweeting out the details so that people can come along and take part in those conversations obviously you make this very clear in the book that the global battle for news and information takes different forms in different places how over. Ground over old terms would you characterize the nature of the battle faced by news and journalism these days. I think the as you say a 100 different places and I made a big distinction between states which are ruled by authoritarian rulers or parties and states which are still democracies or various kinds but basically the democracies in the authoritarian States Russia China Turkey Egypt many others in them in the Middle East and elsewhere you have narrow hardening of the view that. Politics is too important to be left to the media and the brief windows of relative liberalism in these places like the Arab Spring Russia China and so on. Has now closed and most of them are the journalists cannot do what they tried to do a few years ago they are essentially condemned to be mouthpiece of the regime on the other hand what is happening in the in social media and then on the net is that it is liberating people including in these means countries to give some kind of popular view of what's going on in their areas and I'm not talented to the State of the state propaganda What do you see happening in Western countries in the Western democracies I think what's happening is twofold really it's one building on what I just said is there's an awful lot more of trust of the public talking most people in advance democracies are on the net use social media and they put on put forward their view views can vary enormously but this is a huge increase one has to remember that a huge increase in the possibility of. Conversation and a huge increase I think in democracy and what has been lost is what you referred to earlier on in your introduction that is the virtual monopoly the mainstream media had on opinion and news that monopoly has been wholly broken. And there's a lot of news which is completely fake around that much of the so-called fake news has come from is used by politicians or led to by the president and states who call news fake when it doesn't happen to do a court before they wish people to understand about themselves it's not new is it leaders political leaders in various parts of the world would accuse the media all fake news Donald Trump didn't invent that response didn't. Know it's not there at all it's been going on I think since the media started 4 centuries ago it's different in the sense that right the proper most powerful politician in the world . Leading a campaign against and secondly he knows and many other politicians know everywhere in the world that the media are way down in the public trust. One has to say with being self-serving. Or giving a compliment to to your channels the b.b.c. Tends to be higher than most but newspapers which is my was my neck of the woods and other sources of information are now regarded with great suspicion and people on the right to clearly regard the news media with suspicion because they assume with some justice that it tends to be liberal not conservative and if they're conservative they see that as a problem but basically there is now I think a public view that the media can be challenged in a way which it could not before and it can be a challenge because the public themselves have the means to do it they are now the media the distant past. Let someone in Patiala see one of the ways in which the b.b.c. Has tried to guarantee the independence the authority of journalism over the years is impossible it is not prospective driven journalism that's the claim anyway we try to live up to that but we do have a history in newspapers and especially in America you see this all the time with news channels of news with a perspective where you can almost sense the ideology or the agenda behind some news headlines of the captions going across the screen is not part of the problem for the global news Basile I think is part of the problem. To suggest newspapers have always been part of the liberal news that is conservative newspapers social newspapers and have been since the beginning of newspapers and of course the. Advent of. Things like of channels like Fox News and m s n b c On the left and others in the states make that more evident although it also has to be said that in Europe where are and are many channels of information t.v. Channels years tunnelers public affairs and so on for char bias this way and that and we have in Europe a tradition not in the u.k. But in the tradition in Europe of the public service broadcaster as being captive more or less of the government of the day impartiality I think is very important people say everybody has got different take on the truth and that is true but what you can do as a journalist is to try to get as close to the truth as possible you're never it's like the holy grail you never quite get there but the process of trying to get there is very important and people I think understand that all you can get hope for from the media is a sketch of the truth but that sketch that 1st draft of history is absolutely essential to a Healthy. Maka see it used to be we would say to people you a bit naive if you believe everything you read in the newspapers and maybe people have lost their innocence about newspapers do they need to lose their innocence the public more widely about the Internet and social media. If they ever had it. I mean the social media clearly is social it is good for communing with each other or sometimes you can both themselves and I think it's understood is that if someone if a friend Stenger a message about something which he under understand or she understands to be the case you don't always taken at face value you might think while they tend to exaggerate a bit and people now think that about the media because we do tend to exaggerate a bit what we do. Especially if we're in the marketplace and most of us are in the marketplace is we are like hucksters we cry out look at us listen to us we have the latest on this and we tend to exaggerate and people have realised that I think for a long long time now as I say they can do something about it now they can express their opposition to this now they can say we don't believe in the way in which to present news not just that we don't believe in the news we don't believe in your take on it and that's a quite different. Quite different situation from the one that most of us who've been in journalism for some years are open now the crisis that journalism I think is a crisis the survey the crisis for newspapers I mean newspapers are declining everywhere I think almost no where newspapers are actually doing well possibly some authority or in countries where people are obliged to read that other or in democracies a great newspaper is declining The one exception or the Enough is some of the big newspapers in the States because people have subscribed to New York Times Washington Post and other papers because they want somewhere where they can read on . Do you think to be accurate reporting on when you. Are in large newspapers or in crisis and really you come to the group to be very good you. Might shrewd but many years down the road from documentaries trying to. Remember us through again because the airwaves of cruel on the net is full of competition John looking elsewhere John that's just a taster of what's coming up in the month Stuart conversation thank you very much John Lloyd and you can follow the details of the month 2 conversations on our Twitter feed b.b.c. You can spit you can sway you can do whatever you want but you're not getting on that flight the hope is the compensation is enough to allow you to make alternative arrangements for yourself but of course it's an absolutely dire situation and you also have to work out for yourself would you use Ryanair again after this that's a question people should be locked himself as leader column eastward has written to the prime minister calling for all 5 local parties to be given a seat on the joint ministerial committee he said it was utter madness for Northern Ireland not to have a voice in the brakes at negotiations and said that he did not represent the views of the majority of people here who voted to remain in the. Lead. The live . Live. Live. That is the Proclaimers I'm going to be 5000 miles you know 303-080-5555 do you have a flight booked with Ryanair if your flights cancelled what are you expected to do what are you entitled to get in that situation do you think Ryanair is letting people down on other flights to easily We've got a number of updates actually today on this Ryanair consolations service 1st of all we're being told by the European Commission that Ryanair has to comply with e.u. Passenger rights including possible reimbursement compensation over its plans to cancel between $40.50 flights per day until the end of October and also in Arlon we've got the. The aviation regulator saying Reiner must offer alternative flights or a full refund if it cancels its service as I said said to be shelving up 50 flights a day after it quote unquote massed up the planning a pilot holidays let's talk to Alex materialists an aviation expert and to McCain branding and advertising expert thanks to both of you good afternoon and we're taking your calls 030-308-0555 extension 5 if you're worried about a flight if you were about what's going on with a possible holiday or a business trip and you have book with Ryanair give us a call and we'll see what we can do for you Alex 1st of all welcome Alex have you ever in your life seen anything like this. This is unprecedented I must say it's incredibly unusual especially with what they are saying that they are being as blunt as on his Twitter feed my corollary is admitting that somebody has messed up in cruise scheduling as he said and as a result now up to 2000 flyers will be sent 30 paid people and they are hesitant to release the list of sites that will because they are not for all 3 of 3 things that's basically because they stay up if they operated a 2nd time with sharing care of the next flight cancellations for the next 3 weeks or then crisis as by getting time his book online flights that will be 1030 and therefore they will be eligible for compensation and this is why we haven't heard anything from Ryanair charging us the full list because I understand now that they are trying to kill a plan which means that space flights that will be time. For a couple via the website so last time I looked Alex say they've just given details of cancellations for the next 2 days just 2 days and if you don't apply booked in a month's time who knows what that will mean for you what's your advice to people who are worried about a date in the diary for weeks now. Ra I completely understand the worry is incredibly unprofessional of Ryanair but as I say because they are worried about the ability of packages to be out at the quantum like that and knowing if you can think and therefore make them eligible for the company they give it to worry the passengers who are traveling off of an attitude I have no idea if they are among the like unfortunately my 1st piece of advice would be to cut no part of it from now because even kind of the flight will be the one that a filling up and both are open for going by the young groups where there isn't much they can to check with the backup option and take the flexibility of the of that perhaps rarity her of a flexible ticket with Ryanair and you may be able to get a full refund or a partial refund from now and not have to worry about the headache of being affected by the flight but other than that I really didn't much more positive than do at this point until they find out if there are affected and safe they are affected hopefully they will have that backup plan by knowing how to fight their off and then a cool head and affected by this country less than kind of if I'm of Ryanair up to 2000 by individual eligible for compensation but it's not that attitude of wanting the booking of everything possible to travel and if so that's Ali's advice don't essentially leave you so vulnerable to Ryanair is mess up take control yourself if you can take control with alternative flights that's certainly an option check the terms and conditions obviously with Ryanair which may be like and determining quantum mechanics I don't know there are so many of them but check them anyway to see what your options are to McCain We see this morning that run as share values fall a little bit 3 percent as you'd expect with this kind of controversy we know that Ryanair likes to lord it selflessly kind of cheap as chips budget airline so it's not so worried about some of the things that other airlines our. Worried about in terms of reputational damage is it damaged by this I think it has to be I think we're looking at a company that really didn't care too much about its brand in the past but over the last 2 years saw that the value of the brand with the consumer and with the customer is more important than perhaps they had put in place in the past you suddenly have an event like this and whether the question of it at every single listener is going to be wondering and worrying about if they ever will work with Ryanair again that's got 0 impact on their long term business they have a product that people want on directly there's a low cost flight as we all love taking advantage of that but you have to know the flights going to be there you have to know you're going to be able to get on out because the disruption isn't just the flight disruption in people's lives of people who have travelled abroad and are looking hard to get back from people who have got holidays that they've adverse event so as a brand it's a really really damaging element to the process which reminds us of some of the old ones in the past if we remember it was a flight says she with a vacuum cleaner and they really suffered from not and never recovered so well ever be trusted again who knows I would die to it I think people will still buy from them I think people will still be in juiced by the sheer value that they get from Ryanair but as a brand in their expectations of a nothing else from them like decency like service but they constantly have done this with the has to be a time when you've jumped the shark when the public even though they don't expect too much we're not expecting you to be 1st class British Airways here yet but we do expect some basic things like the planes waiting for me and it will take off there comes a point when you jump the shark as you risk doing so and you lose that trust and the thing that will happen is really well that they will be damaged if people see an opportunity and other businesses and other airlines say you know what we need to fill the gap that Ryanair is going to create because people are going to stop booking it but because again you can go places to give them a little bit of credit not much. Today but they have opened our travel into parts of Europe that we wouldn't have been able to travel to when it works it's great absolutely terrific but because back to the fundamentals it's no point booking a flight to Poland if you can't get on an airplane hits you know it's becomes just a whole ideal time so the whole thing about the brand is I think it's hugely damaged O'Leary used to not care I think he cares a lot more not we're talking to Alex but Cherice the aviation expert and to McCain The branding and advertising expert exports galore on the Talk Back program program today is going to the calls Robin is in Peterborough Welcome Robin Yes good afternoon good afternoon sir yes I was. Booked through a travel company to fly loyal on the 5th of September which was absolutely fine no problems whatsoever. We got to our hotel kind of a little. And had a lovely wake and our flight wasn't us until late on Tuesday the 12th and the thing flies. Which are ourselves all packed and everything else and when. It came to. We left the hotel with our cases but went out for the café I have coffee each white trash transport and. Stuff the cafe said as you know heard running of canceled all their flights saying that we haven't heard anything. Of what the travel company I've got a manifesto a phone number we have certainly I thought they were joking ways and then I checked and they were right. To find a travel company and they say yes that is correct. All we can do is offer you a flight on Friday. We're going to stay in the meantime. Well. I think was the reply so can you give me a flight back elsewise in otherwise and eventually find i Phones and 50 pounds for you flight via jet to the following day so having had accommodation to pay for foreigners annoyance and taxi fares and so on to the airport was a total cost for you Roman. Invasion of about 750 pounds any person just to get home just to get home Alex let's get a response from Alex but you're us on this one what were the options facing Rob in the high road but obviously this is really disappointing and unacceptable and unfortunately something that we're about to 'd often the one question that I quickly before we move forward. All of the risk of course. Yes I have. Trouble. With themselves she sent me a receipt the 450 pounds the phone just 50 pounds and I've got the receipts for food taxes commiseration etc. Last year in a very good position to be well equipped with a notice 'd to go forward Ryanair have a queue to pass that they are obliged to provide tasks as with a fist and during periods of disruption and not assigned from the fun side from compensation for out there they haven't provided you with any of this as you had to take things into your intent we had no choice but to die on the island at the destination until the next available flight to disadvantage something that was a cost that. Tiger and with that I would be putting in a claim to Ryanair and Ryan and tied to long into the Civil Aviation Authority and that would be for the course that we have to tie using or everything to hard for how everything that moves didn't plan to be spending because one meant to be flying back and in addition to that party to a refund for the flight and then the new compensation and that starts at about 280 pounds as a starting both. Both 2 things as pretty as one to claim now there are going to be many people claiming Unfortunately these things take time Natalie. Cooper 9 years in the mouse and child like you are harming them you need to fight Otherwise you fall back to the bottom of the clue that is beside reality and make sure that you get a response if you need any further assistance are unavailable. In Abby more than half its size guys great Robin can I tell you I've been in your situation myself with and different situation in the past perseverance is the key to success. All these Erland sometimes expect you to go away but then your complain then disappear you need to persevered do not give up without complaint keep going with it thank you very much Rob And Alex Merrick Hello Alan I know yeah well yeah sure remember Charlie I do know yeah. Well it's one thing you say that this is I've got a branding expert on the is this the comparison Tim I think it is remind people of what he described the jewelry as we can use that term absolutely he described what was the price of a Samaj or some such thing as a 4 letter word. And it will be just folded the your company went on there I think they have to be very wary of this there have been acting. In a very Kabul they are and some might even say carboy fashion to be quite honest it's just leaving people in the lurch like this and not seeming to make any effort to solve the problem I think it's one of those you know they say it's not we've been in touch with them they're not talking to us or unavailable today but they would say it's not a behavior it's that they're there punctuality is form below 80 percent they're taking measures to do something about that to fix that situation obviously there's a back story Norwegian Air has already made it clear new region air shuttle that they've taken $140.00 pilots from Ryanair in 2017 pilots leaving Ryanair going to know we know the back story the going to deal with it the dealing with it yeah you look at what has resulted in this and this is potentially because they've gone too low with their costs they've actually or their prices and they actually aren't the offer is not there now and they're not able to pay the pilots the right level of money if they're moving jobs or moving jobs for a reason Alan you're still there yeah yeah I mean I think that's right and they're sort of in here to work at 4 letter word but ran are saying here there's a very clear challenge we're going to treat you like you know we're not going to tell the very last moment whenever you might be Czech Republic or a stone arch or our money or from for any work. Whatever we do you're on your own. Or they can say you put it that way they would say I'm sure their p.r. Department we say we're certainly not saying that we're saying we will make every effort to get you know turn into flight if we can't do that obviously we have legal requirements yeah but over there we went to their own country and their counsel and . Let's say there's those $77.00 is probably all about a $180.00 people let's say there's only a 100 people per flight there's people every single day that clearly are going to run under the pines and they can't possibly get there counseling because they don't know where they're getting the capacity to get those 5000 people oh my no and the 5000 the next day on the 5 day off they're. Not going to be able to do it I think it's the on toughest as a modern business or not as the customer 1st you know at the end you know a good business always looks at their customer 1st and then their problems and they have to they're obviously putting their business 1st and the customers are the collateral damage on it's horrific I mean you know no idea what it's like to be sitting some Are you fly a lot don't you I mean I've done a lot of us I'm not sure how often you have ever flown with with Ryanair but if you had a Ryanair flight booked in a week's time him what would you be doing now maybe a business meeting you're going to somewhere I would be having to book another flight I would be if you were going to take a risk I wouldn't take the risk at the moment you couldn't mean at the end of the day because they're not telling you again to go back to and I was interested to hear your other guest saying about the potential for people booking a flight so they can claim compensation that's the way Ryanair are thinking about preventing a lot but for ordinary people who have booked flights they've got to be thinking you know is my flight going to go we're not going to go into not no further right than 2 days shows a whole focus on runs our business and cost rather than the customer's Allan thank you very much Alex if someone decides to do what Tim has just described you got a flight next week I'm not going to take a risk I'm looking for alternative flights and I want to save what money I can with Ryan that was the best way to do that. It's difficult because you know one would argue that if you are having to exercise that option and that flight that you were originally booked on which by an ad doesn't end up being affected and it goes ahead and of course you're not asking entitled to anything and you're just a no show you aren't you're a no show at the airport. Well if you're nervous or you use your aversion to get out entitled to anything from the allies in some cases Now here's a charge but I'll write it not eliminate stuff but you could argue in any family thing a position myself once blood is over once we accept the state we could I would be on the phone to Ryanair and I would be limiting them continuously same but I expect some things to be given because I wouldn't take the risk of knowing if my flight was cancelled or not when they have openly admitted to me by living 2 ties Well that's simply not because I have a case if passengers are response are in the hands of Ryanair and you are not meant for the future thing to happen to today or the flight program the flight could have without responsibility I would say Ryanair were liable not legally but morally and ethically basically the writing of things has many many else to say to be able to win back to because ultimately like he said each passenger affected directly affected by these considerations to always be strongly doubt they will be poking around a flight soon after a game however I didn't take it back to the United States being given over and by yeah that was a shocking kind of Hillyard disaster for United where I dragged the doctor off of the AK Croft in a very vicious why that went viral 2 weeks later everybody was flying United just as all those low fat continue to attend the well being and project and all these the Rhino would deny that they don't have moral morality or they don't follow little they do follow the law the question is what what should they do in this situation when they're losing pilots when they've got a mess up in their own shed chilling I don't know what they should do in this situation how do you how do you go forward all those on council from flights Alex. Is difficult because for example for Ryanair to be doing this in the case means that they are very confident in the process they are my thing for the cost of a wooden car this is a a very costly take please the number crunchers on heart and wallet. Exactly but about how do I go forward from the side of a get out of the top of a wall obviously the person on the team in charge occurring and crew scheduling crew of in my career is right and stop they will be looked at and that team will be looked up to him so that this doesn't happen again but it's like not that's not happening again this is a mistake management within an airline Adeline stuff take the lead and the reason for this rush is because started to have a sudden not simply by October 30th but went on the perfect live end of the winter schedule will come into place now Ryanair have operated all flights than ever before the frequency is unbelievably high are not operating from the constraint apposed where they are fighting negative life because 1 o'clock to fly as many as 6 or 7 flights per day now with that one could suggest that right after Hearts were a little bit greedy or a little bit are specific in terms of the summit schedule that they start to operate this summer 2017 because at the end of the result we are approaching the end of summer now and flooding of the island have relied on the 2nd of our staff have been working but is it taking the lead on a course that would prevent a very messy situation and say they are recognizing that they must have such a profitable promise that they can afford to do this no matter how bad of a tarnish the brand and cost the airline is and it's unprecedented but it's happening nearly on a time to McCain what would your advice be to Ryanair getting through this and putting it back together again and putting themselves in the best market position again they need to completely reverse or convert a viewer they need to be thanking them for a lot of people this is their big expense of the year they're planning to go on holiday they're planning for 2 things that they're looking for an excitement they really messed around with people's lives here and they need to be seen to be doing something to address some 1st start to get rid of this 2 day element if they can do that you know to let people know whether the 5 day success came from a winning the fine planning to go in 2 weeks time with my family and all of a I want to know if I'm able to go or not yes. And the fact is that there are actually continuing to mass people who are on buses the thing is not only the people of the dropped off on the flights they just seem to have no customer or knowledge want or care asshole in the circumstance of him thank you very much to McCain thanks to Alex Machar us and incidentally our colleague Linda McAuley over there and on your behalf they will be looking further into the into the consumer affairs as he's around this Ryanair controversy if you'd like to get in touch with Linda entertain and so they can look in more detail your case you can contact a white baby.
