Yes good afternoon if you're just joining us welcome to the Pullman road fan zone for this week's Life pitch with a friend debate colleague legend in residence who left us at just 64 years of age in the early hours of last Sunday morning devastating news Joining us now in a place where the picture is always great and you can bet he's going straight into Bobby said line up so many people coming up with a tear in their own today giving us a hug the book of condolence he's here fans of signing that Terry Butcher has come down to show his support for us today. Champion will be with us while he was a great friend of the bait you got loads of proper music to play between now and 2 o'clock we'll be talking to the managing director here at Ipswich Town football club but in the next few moments we're going to look back at what was a golden era here at it switch and one man one man is going to feature heavily in the next 20 minutes and of course it's the bait we're talking about his proudest proudest moments in football and that was winning the F.A. Cup and get us in the mood for that to trip down memory lane just have a listen to this. It's supposed. To leak. Only. Needs to. Be. Called a. Memorise of $978.00 of course the F.A. Cup song with the recording. Would always tell me until they send over for a crate of beer to help with that recording we'll hear some magic moments of that era in a moment or 2 and another member of the team has just arrived at track boy here and of course. This time last week you were sitting right next to our dear friends been a tough week a very tough. And I said. Sunday. Just sign up. Today is really tough. Because he said the rest of us a quick word with who is the managing director here to. The club secretary in a very very emotional. Day in the book of condolence here. In there on. Everybody's grieving you know sort of the family. A lot of fans are grieving over Kevin's. As you said we don't need to repeat everything but yeah I think. We start remembering the fun we had with him and the good times and the how we played all the rest of it and also with regard to a fitting memorial that will come I think there's a time and place I think to discuss that. And yeah he's going to be very much and also today yeah he was. A fixture here you're relatively new tips which town but you knew about Kevin Beatty didn't you he was one of the 1st people. It was Phil Phil here to solve introduce me to him because I didn't recognize him having not seen him for the 1st you know I was a kid when he played you find him sort of you know really likable. Lovable rogue really and. And he was keen to talk about me being a know all there and he'd be from. And talk a lot so yeah. I thought you'd like to go for a pint with so I think I think that's what everybody said I think you know what most people in the fans listening today probably did with that song wait for a point where they've agreed to see God thank you ever so much and Terry he was very very proud of his F.A. Cup run his way here in a moment or 2 and he was crucial to that was and yeah it was touch and go with that with the next question to make the final Russell was in this war that Russell played in every game played every game up until the semifinals so you know it was it was touch and go and as soon as I declared fit everybody knew then they were going to win because they're up against some good players and he was a stable 10 and Malcolm McDonald and there were some great players and team fantastic players but in the end they would they were in a lot supply as you know we were so good on the day it was just fantastic when we threshed should've been a lot more but he was in several to that you know you had the also forwards in his pocket and him in big I was just immense They really were and it's such a shame when you look at that and you say well that implied together much after that and I was there so the climax but what a climax it was you know 1st trophy for the time apart from the elite win back in the sixty's but I think if state fit the feet of being fit to not enjoy it and he didn't do rehab as well as he should have done you know you know if he'd have played more we would have one more Wouldn't I think he would have you know. Was in goal and he didn't have a lot to do and win big on and the beat with that and we had a great full backs as well with Mills Ian George and fantastic back for back 5 really and that's what great teams a bill on going forward it was a mentor as well but the thing about Bobby was he Chinese It seemed pretty much after that he knew he had to do with out on the injuries but obviously something broader a central central So he faced the cup winning team and. In the. Plight and he meant he means Prague told you that on the page I was sore that goal and the next job we take the next in strongly because I want to kill someone in the crowd ever gone through and then the goal against West Brom is well in the 7th he scored some phenomenal score easy ones the. Yeah he's just immense in both ends of the page so I think he would have time we would have been if if they had been 5 years earlier. With a cup win he would be in big then who knows what we might have done and I was very lucky in the respect to be in big. Shots and it's. But I wish I hadn't had that chance because I just love to watch them in training out here on the pitch and I were used to pride in trying to stand and watch them play together. When I do have a job because I was. Paid to watch them play it was lovely the room together of course was you the told me the story of going into the room when it was in complete darkness but just a couple of glowing security gains in the room it was it was you or one of one of the team of that time opening up the room and it could see it was to see. The dog have a cigarette smoke it was nice it was a lot sore but it was so much that. You can see but now they were but they were in the game when he. Had to go and get them out of there in fact after the games in the big boss the big communal noise kind of beer in a cigarette they said been there. Was a bit of the buff off to the Games it was was really good it was great fun we had some rights but they. Even splash it anyhow it was a joke I. Love the laugh it in life being serious as you know you love the fun and you know the best bits of a larger picture when the microphones were closed and they will always remain in all thoughts of. Sticking a painting. Talking about a sense of humor one of the reasons we love the boat was his amazing sense of fun we would hang on his every word now let's go back to the last game of last season when we were here in the Fan Zone presenting a very special program on that Sunday morning celebrating Ipswich town's F.A. Cup win 14 years ago the bait was an Integra part of that program and we found our own Monday the day that we were celebrating his life that that programme on that Sunday has been nominated for Radio Academy Award which is the equivalent of a Bafta and I just wanted to ring up and tell him on Monday and say get you know get your velvet jacket on and your big to keep O. Out because we're heading off to an awards do but of course I wasn't able to do it but he did play a big part in that program and this is this is the great story of him riding a police motorbike around the team hotel on the morning of the F.A. Cup final so you get down to Wembley you're staying on the Friday night the Saturday morning. With Mick Lambert tell us what you got up to on the morning of the Cup Final but you got chatting to a couple of the policeman. Obviously we were in. My room. Look at Valerie and I don't know what's wrong with them anyways yeah we just shot outside a policeman. What they like he said with a very very quick chill. Can have a go. On a subject. You'll tell if the pulse of the. Mood. Even though that story. Terry that was him was. Yeah I was. Told a story about him. Yeah. He just he just loved. A lot. Of the things he did obviously the bomb far incident comes to mind of things like this but that's the way it was I mean he just peed on the fossil from where we're standing it was raining one day on the Friday and we're just about to travel up to play Manchester United Oh I was obviously in that same name the team and. Only a few seconds before the end of the trying to session and the peoples's door muscle because he's got rubber boots on and his poor Bobby Robson went absolutely because . He didn't care sometimes trying some time with his laces on he just you see all the things you could tell him off but you couldn't really tell him off that he was such a lovable guy and you knew that come the Saturday when he could play when he did play he would give everything and more for the team and for you and he would win you games simply that. The relationship between him and I mean that there was a special relationship. Yeah it was I mean he was like the guys as well you know very similar players you know exceptional to exceptional talents and they needed the right management and the right manager. As a guy as a player. 3 very good managers Venables Will Smith and overseas and then be played his best football and so. You know you you have to have a certain skill and Bobby had that eventually he knew people he knew the cards he knew what might people take and he would knew which buttons to press with. The press would be 11 major one and just appeal to be just there and do it for me and be did because it was a father to be Kevin Bieksa he really was if he was a fine. Let's live for some of those moments again from 1978 and we've been trolling young comics and thoroughly enjoying every bit of it of course but the one of the biggest highlights of beach life was winning the F.A. Cup back in 1978 and here he is talking with Bobby Robson and make males about that when nothing raised we would fight the 200. Because of where we are from we picked up over neutrals So the how we had the nation behind us who have been stacked against us but inwardly we knew that we had a good side and that we could wait. For such a swell with that voice when you got to do now is go out and enjoy yourself. As it was that it was. You welcome the incline you can see anybody to get to the game to. Try out the pitch and then the whole. Thing so I'm kind of going to the top. And I looked at the awesome plan and then a new list but we will relax because we had nothing to lose as I say I want to go out there the crowd absolutely someone I know you can see the red line. Yellow pads look for the rest of the lot and for the fix all the blue dying. For nothing and their careers are something to kind of describe that maybe some it might make things I really didn't think I knew from then I know from. We gathered last May we gather the 70 eight's Cup winning sign here in the Fan Zone to talk about that day at Wembley Here's how Mick mills in the bait remember the journey back to Suffolk the trip back along the A 12 what was it like from your perspective with the F.A. Cup in the front the coach always you know everybody it's sort of you know it was it wasn't just when we hit self it was when we came through sort of for sheer Essex You know wherever people were turned out to say isn't only these 2 you know the 2 cent Hobbs again you know they're constantly wanting the boss to stop the cult so they could have a drink you know everybody else is OK so they can all be applaud it and everything but these 2 wanted to drink. It But clearly when it vetted. The funny thing is we stopped at the Army and Navy when in the pub and the fans can believe it it was absolutely wonderful came out and they were the boss said look you want point one point not so you can up 3 pints later. Became I'll come back on a course on the big bond remember that we was brilliant. Wind from him to go on day says. This is why he says you know Paula we. Saw it's a he said he says what about this is that. He says Boss how old a boss saw the boss he did forget the coke he had a coke he went in and came out with a bag of ice. The baits the F.A. Cup win one of the greatest days of his life he was so immensely proud to have played for which town to have played. To have played for England but winning the F.A. Cup for him was the thing that was the moment and here is how the town celebrated by scums and to place it straight you have to turn quite sharply to the right as it comes up behind. Decided the town hall because that's when the biggest chair will come when the 252-6000 supporters here get a sight of the same bus at the moment where in a previous position along with 2 or 300 supporters you can say that's a must but of course everybody Matthew spiny shouting that even though I am a by doing this I must say as a monolith but to go with him and be he being the cheerleader cool because of the waving he's on getting everybody so I did as you know. And apply as acknowledging the fans the fans acknowledging the plan as what a situation. Undoubtedly one of the highlights of the Bates life was that at Wembley and on the Cornhill and the 8 like the song did and here he is singing on the steps of the Coney Island 70 I. Will go. He might have been a great footballer but he worked. It was a great singer Butch he would tell he was in racing every day he would never tell him he was awful but now you just kept on going very well and when I was within that night I got back on a Sunday and it was just immense everybody was overturned by an interesting scenario I saw that he loved that's what you do when you win a Cup go around and see the fans and that's what he wanted to do you need talk about him being a fans player fans man but he certainly was because he wanted to share that night with all the supporters and he went ramp up to pop to pop and we were driving of course but he was certainly drinking. Great great memories and he was so immensely proud of that and you know as you say with him and Big Al in central defense there they had the Austin team in their pocket which was amazing Keith Bellows with us now former world champion Cianci boy like the beat. Down here case when you heard the news last weekend devastating I was in Florida on holiday with the family and the worst thing is going around shopping malls and text me and say can be it I know full well didn't think him Kevin was ill. You know this is over the years and I just really you know it's the set always Chandy I mean there was if she townhouse just across the road from bun and rode my mom still lives there and. First of all when Kevin had it and got to know Kevin really well when ballboy used to pick me up some on skin give me a lift and it's in the ground I'm always on the once it was. And he was banging on the same we're going to come off you know you want to go with that. And it was great I mean I knew Sally Kevin went through some really bad times tough times you know and I used to go around when I was in the boat championship year. It was here you get where you go and he said you know. If I come into. A field and I'll put in the draw for. 6 months in I mean it was tough times that Kevin and they faced we got on his feet again and he said did you sell that medal been Kevin always there and that was going to happen and it was in a draw and you know it was just a good friend. Struck me talking to him you know because we've talked this week about what he'd be worth in today's market and he could be really bitter about the way his career ended and perhaps the way the football didn't look after him in the way it should have done but he wasn't a bitsa man he was just very stoical about it Oh that's right I mean Kevin even played some football than he on a Sunday I mean I lived in Enfield when I won the toil and I was very good friends with the owner of Enfield football club and he said Kevin you still plays and I actually got Kevin to come out he was going to come up when field trying once a week and play for him but he's need just couldn't do it and you know they were going to play in really good money which I was just trying to do something because he's been such an all it all really I mean as you say 4 G. The I mean to go and see Kevin and Terry would know what it's like being a footballer soon as he's played his knee look at big balloon and it was orrible because he was a miniscule as he was different class to anybody we've ever had I mean Terry was a great player. Kevin you're talking about really well overall we know they've been well over 100 caps you know he was no one better really I mean he had everything but he was such a good guy and he and he say he won't get sick if he knew that he would you know made a 100 cats made a fortune at the game even then he still made the money but sadly injury was the problem but as a person you know impart Rana seem to do is ask me what I'm up to last year on the road sort of thing we do in and you know it's this just a really great guy and I mean I would take him home after lots of pitch on occasions when he had got a car which was quite often or it broken down or whatever and we used to drive past a very very posh carriage with lots of swanky motor. And it's a lottery ticket tonight which $1.00 to $1.00 would pick it was like dropped him home and he was. He was just you know very grateful for a wonderful football career that he had very proud to spend time with the fans and of course very proud of all of his family stay with this case who talks more the moments when Butch is. 28 minutes past one it's much pitch B.B.C. Radio Suffolk will catch up with Graham very shortly he'll be bringing us up to date with what's happening in the big white well to all of sports but as always here at Ipswich Town we have a community champion to talk to and Roma Nicholson is here she's a 13 year old singer songwriter and no stranger to B.B.C. This. On B.B.C. Radio Suffolk. Very very strange with our legend in residence here the soft and the beats passed away on Sunday morning in the early hours the suspected heart attack as we know so many fans coming into the fans are now looking into a wonderful display of beats career here at Ipswich Town and queuing up to sign the book of condolences really quite hard to believe that this time last week we were laughing and joking with him in the studio Ipswich Town is greatest. Play up and a few years ago a song was written and performed to all of the baits by. Let's hear that right now just listen to the words on this. Little. Innings I suggesting sing a song about the bait and getting in touch stay apologies if I don't get to your message because we have just as you would imagine being swamped with messages about the baby who would normally be here with us in the Fan Zone ashes but has been in touch on the team it's a sad day without the bait the show won't be the show without him I've been thinking about maybe naming the show after him or maybe I'm in the Fan Zone off of the bait just an idea in memory of the Bates I'm going for a big win today 31 to 10 I think we all get up the table and can you play Queen song I'm not sure going to bed to squeeze one in for you fortunately. Everyone it's been difficult to start this text today and not say hi bait so in the belief that he might just be looking down a Pullman wrote this one is for you and the bait in our club will go on your massive contribution as a player as a CO presenter on B.B.C. Radio. Suffolk as a wonderful storyteller and as a friend to all true blue says blessed this and it will continue to do so as long as this in Ipswich Town football club as far as today's match is concerned let's just play the Kevin passion courage and she energy it will be an emotional match on the basis of 2 states the 2nd half against it will be 3 points from an exciting game or the very best ever hopeful show a Christian house with going for a town win today now earlier this year we would hear in the Fan Zone Portman wrote it was the last game of the season Terry but you were there with us as we were marking the 40th anniversary of the F.A. Cup win and seeing all the players together big cities element that. Beats always in his element no matter who you. Know he was just the love I mean that meant so much to him and to the club. Of his career and many aspects only pipe dream and 9 times but it was just just wonderful to be here and you know 40 years is a long time but it just felt like yesterday didn't it with all the boys around and everything else it was just it was just brilliant I mean I was there part of the time sort of Entourage but not part of the squad. With the squad later on and it was just magic was my dream as a time supporter to see time with the F.A. Cup and to be a part of the club and be a part of the squad and then eventually celebrate with applies well that was something special and and to be with my hero beat was just even more he was swarmed that day we had to leave our broadcasting little Phil if you can remember yet. Listen to Eric Harris there was it. That we kind of were looking around trying to find him and plenty of people chanting and taking photographs and reminiscing with him and. Yes Yes I'm going to you know I've been around in it and trying to pull you here that day as well as part of the program to be with the like should be every week was sensational but have all of those if a Cup winning players around and there was well it was special and it is actually and I ain't saying this I never. To see them play a. Friend and they're saying they actually were and that day I really. Said. That the F.A. Cup Final It's just remarkable to think that I know them that night and I did a show with one of them legends every week was absolutely amazing. Dad was part of that program as well and we sent that actually we set that program in 2. Which is the Radio Academy Awards we were very proud of that program we're very proud of the part that the Beat Played in that program and the Radio Academy Awards all the radio equivalent of the BAFTA as they're all radio back to us and so after coming off after Monday's tribute show to the bait I should have actually been in London on Monday a radio conference where the shortlist for those awards is announced and just off the coming on. Monday I had a text from our assistant editor to say that that program had been nominated for a Radio Academy Award so let's go back to the last game of the season here. And let's just hear a little snippet of that program was all about because we partnered up with so many people including the team at the new will see thing it's up to put on that wonderful production blue haven't they She's on county here we are a Pullman road I can remember coming down to Portman wrote on interviewing So Bobby Robson and saying but we don't hear an awful lot when I was growing up and here is the gentleman playing so Bobby Robson in Blue Heaven and doesn't he look incredible and just just talk to me in your voice. Thanks for having us today. Absolutely uncanny Have you studied much about being lived overseas when I was cast as Bobby I was thrilled to get a chance to play a legend been watching lots of. Great stuff on there of him as well and it's just been really good for. Getting under his skin I remember. The club secretary here is Mr Secretary and make meals come to see you all rehearsing and they would just go up smacked it was for them it was just like come alive again it was really nice to have the recommendation from 2 people that knew Bobby very well sure that was a sort of final link in the chain for me in rehearsals to think all right I'm on the right lines and. You look the part even though they were taking the mickey out of the place. That's very very close to what we're going to say we're going to hear a bond with makers that plays a part in the show to its traditional cup final song of course and it launches the wedding ceremony and. Pregnant wife goes into labor OK. You're going to sing very loud who's got some competition over there from the house band here in the fans. Good to see you guys thanks so much for coming down the cost of Blue Heaven. The. Life and death whatever Bill Shankly says it's only a game but it's best sports can give us a glimpse of that saying feeling that what unites us is far greater than what devices we're not just a bunch of competing individuals we all feel strong. That's why so much to so many. Belong to feel part of the same family. That's the best thing about the. Coaching staff is. In the end we really are all in it together. The. Boy. Said to me a few months ago that was only a few weeks ago wasn't. Very long so. Yeah. At Tiffany's funny he's such a. Thing and that's why people you know. Very much like. Him we. Do that we try to. Do his homework and not get mentioned B.B.C. Radio Suffolk lot of fans who are here today to. Come on. How you feeling about the news about being a sad news in days. I've been coming since seeing 7 C. He was the 1st guy and I remember him very fully. Absolute peak then did you know it did come with Medea daddy pasta by a few years ago when he used to be his favorite player and. Also just go full memories of and it's been a tough week hasn't really my stuff and. Somebody that I round here a little bit. I mean. We're going to do it for him to die and I think 3.310 is the show radio I said 3 you want. Anything at all to be honest but she thanks for coming over. Yeah we will do all predictions into the program but I think forevermore it will be $31.00 the prediction that we come up with there is so much the softer noon of course and there is a lot of pressure on a lot of rumors flying around. Well here reports on road and I'm not necessarily just talking about what's happening on the page an awful lot of rumors that they're over you know backroom bus stops in all sorts of things going on so it's not a happy ship down here at the moment Phil No I mean this is no surprise to some degree when you know what I'm off to my in the lake and a cup game but yeah it does seem to be so relationships have already established themselves since. Then and and he stuff came in have come in. Practice So yeah they come in they don't seem to necessarily fit in with the existing kind of structure of the club and you do wonder how much patience meant Lux's obviously had this reputation of being very patient with these managers but if results continue not to not to be the results that we won and they're all kind of things off the field on working then you do wonder whether to stay as patient with him as he has with other people so very important game for us today to get a win certainly looks and lots of rumors flying around about things not. Happening behind the scenes as they should do let's focus on the opposition strikers we're going to win 31 track boy but we need to know the bit about yes. So players to watch. This back affair as a just a very healthy ever present in that scene is a very good championship player. And it's. A very experienced forward in the Championship very very experienced. A very experienced in the championship. Been impacted. But very capable of scoring and managed. A very good manager to say God. It's been 3. Bank when if he gets a good. Finish this season I think he could better things. And they're 15th in the league so to. The softer noon so we're going to go for a 31 I'm going to go for a 3 way I'm going to go for a finish up with case and Butch in a moment also some traffic and trouble coming up 1st of all it's time to. Travel from B.B.C. Radio. Drive north. Through to. The other field a little straight to the. 8 buses replacing. The engineering. Buses instead of trains between. And wishin and to Braintree this is weekend planned and I'm not going to be. If you see something. And it's. The pitch. The fan zone is really filling up now and in the Find. An amazing display of Kevin. Put together which is a fitting tribute but it's really difficult to look at. It because there is a. Book of condolence on there and this is a huge queue of supporters. Condolence. It's just so. We were joking with him in in the studio it's really quite tough to. Tell you which is with us and. Practice speech must bring back memories of standing on this it was . Back in the days but a bit of mud and the bit sort of practicing here along with Big. Big. It wasn't it wasn't big. Spring and its timing was. You know he could jump so he could see the time on the town when you look at the programs and bring them in and talk about them with him in the studio and there was often a picture of him in there leaping up like a salmon I mean he could leap. But you go that's the time to meet the ball and the old gym about the training of the changing rooms they had a ball attached to the string and they should swing it to get out the armor he has to swing it from side to side and forward and backwards he had to run take it in turns to run and hit the ball but he had to get it right if you didn't get it right you're up there all day trying to do but the be used to head it and the ball used to do the loop over the top I think it stuck at the top and then we had to get someone shoulders Detroit out tackle it but he did that for the boys he said what Sissy said if the boys if that was part of peace but he was so strong as well physically strong in the gym and he be a break people's legs because he was strong was a nasty name if anything about Pete he was a gentleman but he was gentle on the pitch he was a hard gentleman you know he was happy he wouldn't go it wouldn't do you over the top it wasn't dirty was a cynical it was fair but it was hard for if you are mean and he used to smash people he didn't know it smash them but he used to but it was if it was a normal tackle. On Sunday about how good a player he was and I remember asking him How did you find your most difficult opponent and he had a bit of I think he thought none of them really. Yeah very true I mean I remember said I said before I think about it became evident reply B. And B. Was a send up I was right and obvious left and up anyway finished the game you got them out of the match award so it walking off the page with it you got the man the match award he said to me he says you should have had this I said no but you deserve it you know you're fantastic he said no my game is easy because you were there for him to say that to me I thought well that obvious but I was really proud of that I was just in on a to play with him and to have him as my friend as real as as he is to everyone very very special man and a great friend of yours Keith Deloris Well we're going to sing terribly and we as well I mean I'd like to see a statute the king Kevin be given be on one of the stunts because he was the king of Pullman road and he's the greatest Bible ever have and King Kevin B. Is the only thing that should be put up there because he was the best and. We'll miss him if he says. Yeah yeah Celia Powell was with us in the studio last Saturday and didn't realize that that would be the final time that I saw him an awful lot of people talking about some kind of memorial it's too soon to decide on what that is at the moment his family obviously going to need to be playing a part in that statue naming a stand I mean the Fan Zone retiring the number 6 it will be mentioned I know the club and lots of his friends getting together to talk about what sort of memorial we COULD HAVE TO THE BIG but we definitely definitely deserve something and if it is a statute. Butch the head that. I think. Not appropriate. A statue would be mentioned they have to go. And we're going to finish up now with one song that got me at the end of a break rest in peace this is for you. Just The same radio Suffolk school.
