Angry sounding song and it was just comic Paul house young Paul Weller there wasn't he over announcing over pronouncing his syllables. Going on the ground with some b.b.c. Radio star on his cough sorry let me go that's better lovely. Mavis and Dennis Ecclestone from our neck of the word the live mechanic actually tragically they made a suicide pact they did this because Dennis was really really ill but been married for 60 years and they made the suicide pact because obviously Dennis was in a lot of pain and he was terminally ill I'm a vis I was even more sadly I guess couldn't face life without him didn't want to be a widow however. And he passed away but she was revived and then she faced the trial yesterday staff of Crown Court Mavis was cleared of manslaughter and murder that the family is now calling for assisted suicide to be made legal in this country following the trial this is Joy mums the daughter of Denison maybe's talking outside court yesterday i family are grateful and relieved that the jury in this case could also reckon are you moms no doubt. But since dad's day at family has been through a terrible ordeal why I think I think a month with this court case worrying the having already lost out that to cancer. We might not say a month. We might Nice am imprisoned. We do not believe this need to tap her if there would be an assisted dying law in the u.k. I. Would have been able to have the choice to end this so free with medical support . And with his loved ones around him he wouldn't have boxed our mom to do something that is considered breaking the law. Had that would have been devastated at the thought of his beloved wife Why seem to find out if at the age of I say she would face the life sentence in prison simply for respecting his wishes. It would depend not broken if he had no needs wife and family would have had to endure itin months of extreme anxiety and distress we believe. There must be a China law so that no dying people are forced to suffer to my plans in secrets or asked loved ones to risk prosecution by helping them and so that no with a family member family has to experience the pain Af-Am Larry I'd like to enjoy the . Joy Munns on the court steps yes the daughter of Dennis and Mavis Dennis who took his own life Mavis who was revived during the suicide attempt. What do you think the question is that I want to put to you. Is is it cruel to keep someone alive if they are dying slowly and in pain Mavis was watching this the most important person in her life her husband was that was his situation that was his terminal future and he asked her to and she wanted to do something to help what do you think. 18080 is it cruel to keep some of the life if they are dying slowly and in pain. Feel. That. Life soon. And soon just plain old I am it's b.b.c. Radio Stoke one of my regular contributors and I won't say who. Has had to switch off the radio he said this this is a difficult subject for me you know you know everyone. What we've been through and it is difficult and this is and I understand this is a hard topic this is. One thing we should shy away from it but it is a hard topic because so many people have been put through the most miserable part of their life questioning themselves over what I'm asking you over this particular point in my being cruel and doing all I can to make the person I love comfortable and do nor I can to be there and to reassure them but is that is the prolonging of life in this way at the end when somebody is terminally ill is that in itself cruel Is it cruel to keep someone alive if they're dying slowly and in pain I don't want anybody to feel guilty by the way because it's the law you need to it's part of the Hippocratic Oath for example if you are medically trained you're there to preserve life and it's a fundamental good that we try as citizens as members of society and communities that we try and preserve life it's barely need stating it's such a basic tenet of what it is to be a human being so I don't anybody to feel bad by me on my asking this question but it is a question I know people ask themselves when they are in that situation what are your thoughts we talk about Mavis of course from Eccleston you must have seen the pictures or heard the reports yesterday as she was relieved her family was so relieved that at 18 months facing. The potential that she could be put in prison. Found guilty of murder possibly or manslaughter. She helped Dennis. Take his own life and at the same time attempted to take her own it was a packed. And whether she was revived Is it cool I'm asking to keep someone alive if they are dying slowly and pain over 801218080 Monte joins us now from Lee callow my morning morning Perry a lovely day it is gorgeous that way while it lasts we're going to plant that we can. Only in your question. Oh gosh you must being 2024 years ago my father. He was on these people's life and some of the party very gregarious character love meeting people of this time in the in the pub. Too much because he had a very severe stroke. Which affected both sides of his brain which fairly unusual. Look isn't left in. Virtually a cabbage he it could communicate but he was locked inside he couldn't he couldn't speak. And I saw the enormous frustration he had trying to trying to explain things to people. And I have no doubt whatsoever because he could he could communicate he could smile or he could not his head. If Allah said to him Do you want to die he would've said yes. And it was just so cruel and inhumane to see him like that. Helen the last after the stroke 18 months and there was a few tears at the funeral but not as many as you'd expect because it was a placid release. And then a few years after that. One of my dogs was acting very very strangely One morning I took him straight to the vet and the vet said this is quite unusual he said I think it was a stroke clearly we have to put him down where. The comparison between the 2 it is a well trusted argument wouldn't talk. Like that maybe because dogs don't have the capacity to say. I'm not very well but I really want to carry on. And that's the difficulties in the. People who knew may may have may not have the capacity to say I want to carry on living doing thing isn't it how we have this difference between our pets and our family members you know all life is sacred and human life even more so I guess because that's our own species. But the sufferings the same I think I don't sing and sing anything craft in an image of an animal suffers at least my not suffer the the worry so much I don't have the capacity to think the future but they definitely sofa stress and pain and and yet you put the animal the phrases out of its misery don't you she do . And I'm a dog lover. Unlike dog that particular dog died I was just a mess when my dad died it was I'm really sorry that you've gone but you know in our overall scheme of things and I think everybody was quite relieved Yeah yeah I get upset no doubt that that was a. But it is a difficult one because it's very much depends on the people's capacity having been through having been through what you've been through Monte union family are you of the opinion the law needs to change yes I do absolutely 100 percent and I've said to my wife children now you see people and you think like God if I ever got like that please help me put down I mean it's not a class not a liberal lark I actually mean I don't wind up like that. All of the problems my dad have a very proud man. You know that's just awful. My been difficult for you to make this call but I really appreciate months pick up the phone. And. So many people have been through this and if you haven't you feel you can share I'd like to know your opinion and it's our question but is it cruel to keep someone alive if they're dying slowly and in. D.c. You radios don't travel and. See other roads looking at the latest now here's Jason Well it's still looking busy this morning if you're traveling south on the a 34 down from the day you rode it talk down towards Chesterton there are some roadworks along that stretch and also coming off the day road going down towards long port and middle port towards the davenport St roundabout again slow due to those temperature signals not doing too badly now if you're shopping on the I 50 that seems to be coping Ok ousters routes around Stafford and crew and running well on the m 6 in both directions but if you see a problem call us on our 80121880. 1 b.c. Yeah very well tell me about your sister all. That I know who got. That call them call long will call or call who are the most highly Mandy I'm really really appreciate you calling in Disli nice quite Mahfood Is it possible that you mouse and distance away from the mouth piece about the yellow bit let's try that and I'm so sorry I didn't know that's that's pending. In September all. The little sounds of what the sad little man in the court want that all anyone wants is. Also a little common diagnosis but all. It was the most high will. Pull was. The Bald Eagles won all. But. It was an honor to do that yeah the pole. Who went through it was a dog. Months prior. With the money was a case do you need to think that. You know he was on a hole and now in hindsight you might think Williams was so good though so Mostly I'm not as. One of these things you don't think you should because you think you just want to stop a Monday coming to disco in full. About 6 weeks from whence we want to part of our lives and. You know see with crime how we. Deal with this is child to 27. Please most children where that was a little bit in their head to worry about. Like say I personally I told my children as. I would I would make sure that in itself and encourage them to global I would not want to my sister's house in bed and colleagues in the quake is giving them the but I'm buggin mocked as much as above the mountain and the call to the not well maybe there is a single plane involved rather still claims of the opposing emboldening the most how do we. Come of them to anybody but ladies I remember to. I really feel now Mavis Yeah yeah. You say you don't think that 45 is you think you just want the poll to stop for them as much as a day once again but Monday I used to say that's not rational I think you know we're more rational when it comes to she said earlier your pets were more rational with our animals and would you say you do you wanted to see a change in the middle man than Saddam was. It's like all these people will go to Switzerland and look at the consequence Look I'm about to all. Ladies you know you're going to be charged but at the time but I will be willing to you know and it was myself I would I would take that having I would want my my family my will my uncle the. Stock of the way I want my stuff. And she was 27 the she meant he was 27 you know what we say that his name and if you don't much care about the town. How longer was his. Problem as a general what it was a horrible awful. Well that is Roland you know yeah and how can I ask how her children. Can know the other guy on the bottom of pocket called Book causes you know the law the 151 of long the audible to the traveler Well this one was planned . Not just we didn't just lose the Hmong the lost the home because that's what the mall how you know that's all for. What. You do what you do as a family do what you have to do as a family you know you quite a tight family member. You know it's not as I'm not playing violin it's not in any family. But when you listen to deal with the grief and the children's schools and questions that the children ask which I'm not. Going. To talk about what all. Because almost all the problems haven't you know. I was once the most sort of those that know you know there's no way of explaining it to a child is. What somebody I mean it's like all these 2 uncle. Wiggily go out is the one not one although I think that. One the little sample a lot but you're not going to get any back well that was so long you know. When it's last Monday and I'm going to I'm going to leave it here you are you Ok Joan you know let's find out why you're Ok to let some of them really appreciate the corner and must be quite tricky digging up all those old memories I really appreciate the cove Thanks a lot Ok you take many pre-show as Mandy in a long time to purchase the quality on the line we start with Mandy anywhere you picked up. What she was saying the gist of what she's saying at least she lost a sister the age of 27 and she says the pain for about 6 weeks that she witnessed. She she wouldn't put an animal through. A speech day in Norton holiday Yakima like. What are your thoughts on this I'm asking is it cruel to keep someone alive like the Kerry campaign to answer the question the nation that you quoting to everyone. I totally agree with with dealing with the pain and maybe we have to assist dying basically is what we say I tell the group with. I know you said earlier 'd about you know medical people need to prolong life not that that is their job to save life one of the worst to preserve 'd life I think that would this missing from that is 'd case quality quality of life. I've got a slightly different angle on. What you're asking. I'll try to make it as quick as I can in the making of the listener so my idea of the cited a yes the moment the moment chauffeured with dementia will probably 70 s. My dad has looked after for the time the last 3 years was with regret this my mom still alive moves 87 but that night has been together for 71 years so that's important we get up you know mom I went into a home about 8 weeks ago. When I found my dad almost collapsed with total exhaustion my mum had dementia for the last maybe 3 years she was. Doing things like putting but no one is on the feet the shoes she was wrapping tissue around hands to keep the wool she was put in brought on ahead she couldn't dress she couldn't eat she couldn't go to the toilet she had to be said she had to be put to bed by a gentleman that would not give her up because she was to too much to give her up. She eventually went into and in the meantime there is a drug on the market call mentally that actually slows this illness down or should I say keeps people alive with it why would we want to do that I really don't know but that's that to a little bit about dementia and I'm not saying every dementia case is that bad or at the dementia case causes people distressed so that's not across the board my mum went into a home 8 weeks ago my father just went down bank he went down to 9 stone he couldn't live without them all me so I gave up on life in consequence she says that is so put a massive stroke on Friday. So now he's in the hospital without the use of these right leg without the squeeze dry all. Eyes closed he can't speak because swallow is on a feeding tube and. We got a chest infection which we had with the hospital are doing their best to try and preserve in God bless my mum doesn't know what's going on. This is the slight salon that I'm trying to pull on what we're talking about this morning if it's of any interest to people no absolutely what is the what is it you will do what do we do now because my father is Hall broken and when I say all broken I mean all broken my carriage of my dad is not a week goes and. Next professional football player that he locally and away from the area he will get a mentioning to. 'd making ties and maybe wanted to people may know who he is now. Out of a strong position to look after them and. Time what he couldn't live without After 71 years he was just he felt he let it down if he'd gone completely gone the stroke a an issue where he is now audial Emilius do we how this gentleman and that's what he is to come back and a b. In the same pain that he was with them all yeah without maybe movements without ability and without dignity so he's not dying but they didn't know the slant to this issue coming back quality of life and that's the point I want to make I think . I agree with everyone that's come on and said that we shouldn't have human suffering but it's not you're still feeling in that it's your thing in life that are interesting and yet I mean I don't think many I don't know I don't a preamp but of the many people would say we can start to use and then you know pet phrase we can stop just putting people down because their quality of life has dipped below so mob a tree level now I get that book with the shooting going on for 7 years and we'll talk about things as a family with a big family but we talk about these things and then maybe maybe there is something that you can do when you are of sound mind with solicitous that says if I get to a point where I cannot control my body fluids my life and . There are 2 medical doctors who are agreeing the situation maybe something can happen to that effect a living will isn't it and it which is already an idea but it's sort of an extension of the Living Will isn't well yeah I get this I get this but we can go on I think in Holland they 'd do assist. They help people 'd in circulation it's like this I think in. I think they do but I think that all the countries. I just find there in this country we are all we are very very good at trying to do things to do good 'd is are there we all try to do everything in this way but we don't see the big picture and I think it's time to change Dave I'm so sorry to hear what your family's going through your father sounds like a wonderful man and one of terrible sort of end to your parents' lives or an autumn terrible autumn to their lives for that Dave appreciate the call once again thank you very much Ok Thank you David Norton your thoughts are 801218080 is it cruel to keep someone alive if they are dying slowly and in pain we can be talking plastic shortly as well Burger King him Donal's are both trying to reduce the amount of plastic they're giving to parents I say to parents because they give it to the kids in the Happy Meal are on my kids to offer Happy Meals now but honestly it did just end up in the back of my car do you want this or not yeah don't throw it away keep it do you ever play it it will and it just sea of Happy Meal plastic rubbish it's irritating. In this announcement though mine from an ecological point of view but we'll do more on that in just a moment this is seal and crazy. One That was. Our. Seal and crazy b.b.c. Radio Stoke going to a bloody hard last a moment or 2 going to be talking plastics from fast food restaurants they're awash with plastic on those places and some decisions recently some of the bigger outlets would do that in a moment 1st they. Were to be seen radio stone travel a. Sort of quick look at the roads with the latest who's Jason or traffic remains very slow if you coming off the de road going down towards long port down towards the island of Davenport streets there are those temper signals along that stretch so that's causing some queue in traffic particularly around the davenport street Island aside from that we're not doing too badly really still busy on the a 50 you talk to bypass going eastbound around the McDonald's roundabout still a bit slow as well on the a 34 Route Hill because again of some road works the day road coping well as is the m 6 a public transport is all running to time but if you do see a problem call us on our 80121880. B.b.c. Radio style. So today you've got Louise stones from after me from 12 o'clock she has on show 8 is legend . Wouldn't it be good to be in issues he's on the show with Louie stones from 12 o'clock this afternoon all the way Keane as well and love too much to play and it was it was on a sort of play half glass Blondie will get on in just a 2nd. Fast food chains have been coming under a lot of pressure to cut back on the use of unnecessary plastic or you may have noticed that McDonald's for example of got rid of their plastic straws and now paper straws last about 2 minutes from my experience and they're also being pressured to get rid the plastic lives as plastic stirrers cutlery etc Burger King has been giving away plastic toys to some of their children's meals since the 1990 s. And its rivals Donalds they do the same they have the happy meals with that little toy now 2 sisters from Southampton started a petition to get these toys banned are this is 10 years too late for me dreadful idea. It's now got over half a 1000000 supporters and this morning Burger King said they're stopping the practice in a separate announcement McDonald's said that they will give their customers the choice the option of swapping the plastic toys in its Happy Meals for fruit bags or a book so it's a significant get back against plastic or do we need to do a whole lot more where we can speak to Stephen I nd who's the campaign's manager at the environmental group city to see and it's all about plastic pollution ends up in the sea Steve thanks for speaking to us today I guess you welcome the end of the Happy Meal toy but it is it is just the pinnacle of the the iceberg or the plastic burger isn't it. Yes good morning I mean what wonderful news to wake up to this morning that we've got 2 junior school aged girls and Ellen Caitlin managing through petitioning managing to change a policy of a multinational organization like Burger King I mean I think it's wonderful news and really an inspiration to all of us those toys I mean I know as a parent that they get played with during the meal and maybe for 1015 minutes after the meal at least in the case of my children that would be it that they get they end up in the boat my car really basically. But it's not the only plastic we see in our fast food restaurants is the lids the stirrers. There's a long way to go isn't. Absolutely as a fellow doubt I can tell you that plastic toys are a big problem everywhere you go. But you're right to say that this is just one aspect of it so we're talking about maybe 8000000 tons of plastic entering into our oceans every year and the reason I think to be optimistic this morning when Burger King are saying that they can say 320 tons of plastic just through this one step is there is a sign it's a sign that young people are increasingly changing what they're what they they want and the corporations like Burger King I think a sitting up and beginning to take note of these future markets and I start to change their policies because of that and I think that's quite that's quite exciting Ok but I mean these are the foothills of what they can do this is the low hanging fruit. The basic fact is for a company like Burger King or McDonald's plastics a bloomin useful single use plastics really help I can't I'm I can't see how they're going to get around many of these things this take the lid that goes on a hot drink. How they can be able to sell a hot drink without that lid. So as actually there so I think the 1st thing to say here is that it's important to not let perfection be the enemy of good you know there are so many low hanging fruit that isn't being picked and I think that's the really important thing here is that we need corporations to be leaders in here we need them to be looking about where they can easily reduce plastic and then they should be looking to see where they can change the single use products into really usable products so to give one example that all of your listeners today could say is as they leave the house in the morning just pick up over you reuse but water bottle this is a really really small step this what's out a single use plastic bottle that you might pick up a train station or the lake needs agent switched out for reuse but water bottle and you're part of that cultural change that we need to see. Ok another area of low hanging fruit than is presumably Waste Management the fact that these plastics are getting into the sea is a bit of a mystery to me why we're putting a 1000000 tonnes of plastic in the sea house like getting in there. So we're being flooded with plastic at the moment and there's just plastic in every aspect of life and when you're being flooded the 1st thing that needs to happen is the taps need to be turned off and the people of the hands on the top are corporations like McDonald's like Burger King but governments as well and what we've got coming down the pipeline for government is the e.u. Single use directive which will see a number of easily replaced items like plastic cutlery. Being replaced and being and being no longer being able to sold in European markets and this will go some way to turning those tops off of the flight of single use plastic but then we also need consumers to take a lead on this as well so I gave the example of the of the of the reuse Bill water bottle because that's something really easy that we can all do. Is around you I mean I had a sort of cursory glance at your website and all looks very good and very laudable very polished as well as his it's nicely presented but is there anywhere in your literature about waste management about the old fashion campaigns keep Britain tidy put it in a bin bin it don't drop it. Absolutely so there's that there's a core thing here which is that for a long time we've been told I mean and I remember this from growing up in the eighty's and ninety's we were told to pick litter up put it in the bin increased recycling rates and we were told that that was going to be the solution and what we know more and more is that the primary thing that we need to be doing is that we need to be reducing the amount of plastic that we produce in the 1st place the waste management systems just can't cope with it we're shipping recyclables around the world to countries with less strong environmental standards Nars And that's one of the big ways that plastics ending up in the sea they're going down 10 rivers in the world primarily in Southeast Asia and guess where we export most of our recycling to of course countries in Southeast Asia this are you telling me it was sorry to say sensitive are you saying explicitly that the very act of recycling because we export our recycling is causing ocean plastic pollution is Israel and stablished link is that what you're saying. So what I'm saying is that recycling should be should be just step after seeing the amount of plastic that we produce and then trying to swap out for reuse about recycling should be then that next step I think so many of us would have watched the b.b.c. . Since those warm plastic series and I've been shocked by those scenes of Hugh wandering through mountains of plastic that were coming from British people markets piled up in Malaysia you know this isn't this isn't the legacy that we want Britain to have in the world for our pointless plastic being shipped abroad and being and being mismanaged that's not what most people want and we need companies we need government and we also need all of us as consumers to step up to the plate on this great speeches Thanks coming on the show that Steve Hind campaigns manager at the environmental group city to see do pay the website visit have a look at it see what they're about I do wonder if if there I say it because it is almost sacrilegious to say this in this it's very sort of in a we're in an eco awakening Aren't we at the moment people are sort of waking up slowly and starting to appreciate how precious this one planet is to us but so I don't want to say anything sacrilegious but I do wonder if it needs to be recognised that the very act of the way we are doing our so-called plastic recycling exporting the problem to countries who have lower standards than we do and then taking the recycling box Well that's job done just you hands off and or way do is then create a mountain of it much of which ends up in the ocean but that's the very opposite of good Waste Management. And I'm one and here's the question I'm wondering out there if anybody wants to take me up on this I'm wondering whether a better solution at least in the short term until we can effectively recycle all our plastics ourselves is to put it in landfill well managed well run landfill Now I know that will be an anathema to many environmentalists plan just wondering if since we're putting $8000000.00 tonnes of our plastic in the oceans a year. Weather that's the most sensible thing to do in the short term. Love to know your thoughts on this. Is not a problem it's going to go away any time soon. No doubt we will return to the. B.b.c. Radio stuff. You And some good cool sites really appreciate everybody who's fine in Stella's less story very difficult subjects that we're talking about Mavis and. Mavis and Dennis Eccleston from Huntington. Mechanic who made a suicide pact dentist died he was terminally ill anyway a poorly poorly man and a lot of pain made his his beloved wife she was revived and then faced a trial she came out of court yesterday having been cleared of manslaughter a murder much relieved as was her family but I'm asking this question Is it cruel to keep someone alive if they're very clearly dying in a lot of pain. Responding I think to Dave call from Norton what a sad story from your last guess and then the rest was the Rings his hands and says What's the answer what is the answer got an interesting thought my thoughts about the lady whose husband was in pain and terminally ill what were they thinking what were going through the heads of those people who revived her knowing that she would have to face what she would have to face it must have been obvious it was a double suicide of an old couple where is the medical compassion in this as a any their job or any is preserve life isn't it what you do to preserve life because I'm very exciting news after Job Watch I'm speaking to a gladiator ace b.b.c. Radio Stoke job watch a warehouse operative is needed in New Castle and the line will be order picking putting away parking on the salary is up to 8 pounds 25 an hour for information on how to apply. 101 to 1880 making a difference in staff and b.b.c. Radio Stoke Yeah he's known as Ace from Gladiators to some he's recognizable as the fiancé one time fiancee of Katie Price formerly Jordan on Saturday however he will be known for his faith. One Thurman's his real name he wasn't born I guess is that all say just Civic Center chatting about his life we've got this weekend and I caught up with him yesterday and I start by asking him what life was like as a gladiator you've been on quite a journey haven't you warrant people were obviously remember you dressed not a lot looking very buff and looking people of toadstools with pugil sticks. You've come a long way since then I mean you very last quite a good description actually lost some some I try to describe I didn't like as I said we spent a lot of time swinging and I was like no that's not what we do you know swinging involved no. Anyway so lonely but lots of it was really like it was really more like a Whereas for adults I think that's what I was involved with absolute was good fun it was brilliant it really was I mean it was incredible it was the biggest It was the 1st reality t.v. Show and The Golden Age of Television 4 channels one channel out all the money over $16000000.00 of us you know if you go on that show you became a celebrity over night. So you can imagine I was a kid in a sweet shop all my dreams come true it was incredible how hard is again my gig to be. Well yeah it was an easy actually I was invited to a fitness tryouts I wrote into the show initially and I was invited to a fitness tryout and when I turned up there were 60 other hopefuls fellows or on doors or want to kill me. That was a little bit intimidating and what was the trial can you remember the would be a would have been near the London television studios and sorry sorry if I might obviously so I've stopped nesting in a carrier bag it up. To top and I'm like that's just one quiet. Sorry very generous man I guess. So yes just wondering if you can remember what you remember of your audition your trials Yes So . Blackfriars go and 60 fellas all bodybuilders all alone in this golden ticket to be on the biggest t.v. Show. And so is in a school gym and I got a solar what's called a pugilistic which is like a giant comeback might a lever look soft when you see it with a bass not like being punched by Mike Tyson especially when it's got 20 stars.
