Stories music life you know the lovely stories about strangers helping each other out in this appalling whether they were having at the moment we've heard about a family in will in whole or going out to clear the path for people living their streets we've also heard about volunteers driving n.h.s. Staff to work to keep essential services going and it's a good reminder that there are people who would have. Stranger for no other reason than because they want to help if they can so my after 11 story tonight's perfectly reflects that spirit of giving it was 10 years ago that Brett was dying then a stranger called Paul Rodgers came forward and saved his life the 2 men became great friends and a few months ago Brett's was the best man appalls wedding Brett joined me to tell his story Oh it's my pleasure Tell me a little bit little bit about yourself breast and your family set up as well. Why you be both like this diagnosis being all. We've got 6 children. 6 grandchildren. The grandchildren all appeared after my illness. I think in some ways my quality of life is actually better now. Not because I don't work it's because I appreciate things more well let's go back why was your life on the line a decade ago I had leukemia. Without a transplant. Simple So you're on hold I believe you I got diagnosed and wrong you know. Yeah Ok and to be away on holiday and get some sort of diagnosis I This must have been quite unnerving for you when when you're told. Of your illness yes it's very frightening and in actual fact I didn't really understand. We had phoned a friend of ours who is a doctor who is French speaking to some translate. Yes it's quite alarming but the thinking Well you're probably going to. Know I believe you rushed by began treatment Yeah I did it the most and yeah. What were you told about it's you survival chance I was told. Most. There was one who said look you know you're already option is actually to have a top spell and. Then I said well you know how risky is that when they give it to me and I've got no option anyway and he said Well there is a I tell him you know a reasonable chance that it can actually kill you or we're doing it. Why does he think oh no well there's no other option. Just told me through what led up to the diagnosis. I'm still feeling a bit under the weather I had. I had a bad taste in my mouth I did actually go to the doctor my doctor was twice. And. They didn't give a blood test or anything but a sort of clue from what I was down as my son's and we were having a drink and I said all you know really what's in those are and how to feel pretty good and I said well there's a doctor. In the apartment with dying and I have it with him and I spent and spoke to him and he gave me some pills and he said you know I'll give you these long as you promise to have a blood test in the morning so at that point he suspected you. Well I can see he said he said I don't think you very well. Had the blood test and he said come back at 3 o'clock he was actually looking for me he said you know you really are ill. So the only hospital they could get me into was Princess Grace Hospital which. Is a beautiful hospital we have to pay for it wasn't actually that expensive but I was thinking Oh God. And then they gave me some treatment and got me back here and luckily there are almost I'm accepted me as a patient so what was running through your mind when you are starting a system Well I was frightened I was pleased that I wasn't going to die straight away and just sort of think of positive things are sinking Well at least everybody knows that I'm ill so it's not going to be a great shock to everybody. And. Then as a patient I found it quite as a patient you just do what you're told you think well I'll try and be the best patient tell me to do this and that and you do it. It's quite easy being the patient it's quite scary and I found. That it was I thought to myself well it's only a few months out of my life. To do it really and not to have any perspective think about what it would be nice to be doing this or that something somewhere else you know just appreciate whatever you can each day and just the nurse coming in to see you appreciate that was there a moment when you thought you were not going to like it. You know they told my wife I was going to die. I told her. That I thought I was going to die and then they had her in and told her. They thought I was going to die I went mad at one stage too and I told her I said I think I'm losing my mind and I did. I thought I thought it was all 3 so whatever you said was part of the dream. Which is that was a very strange experience. As you needed to stem cells was what they had to do they had to wipe out my new system to give me the stem cells and then that becomes part of my blood so all my new blood was created from the stem cells that I got from Paul and. Like if he was a different blood group what I was my blood group would change his. Always we not kill ations that I happened I was younger I had to have a guy. You will call to pull a 2nd was the not to run a set that could deny the staff Selsey. You know that wasn't. The checks made they were there were yeah. The charity and Nolan searched its stem cell Raj's this really was your last chance of survival was that it works best how did they tell you that's amazing b. That's found a match I said found for possibles paws the best one. But then it I suppose you know there's no guarantee that he'll agree to do it. But you know they did say that there's 4 possible ones that I could have that must have been great news to get for you yes it was. Ok really great. How You Can the stem cells to some level how do you how does the procedure involve Well what it's about like being given blood it sort of looks like blood and you've been waiting for this a bit disappointing. Going to kill you and it. Could be some even more glamorous place. You have the great upside another tool religious right but my my account I'm Catholic and he was lighting candles for me the pastor in the hospital he was a sailor so I got on quite well with him and he said Do you mind if I say a prayer Well they giving it to him say oh yes. Friend to a friend of mine I think you know anything just think how you. Are let's just take a break here for some music but afterwards I'd like to talk about the day you met Paul the man who saved your life we'll talk more about that in a few moments time online migrants coming to you. This. Song. So here I want to talk tonight 8 slain a grand Charenton talking to Brett Stengel whose life was saved by a stranger well we have to where you were explaining the procedure for receiving stem cells from a from a donor How soon before you felt a difference that it's a made to you Well that's quite a cool story actually because. It's about $100.00 days all that would i know whether it take a moment. Because he's still not feeling particularly good but. I was at home and. We'd Lent. Old boat to another boat builder up the 1st but the 1st boat they made because picked it up and said look it's not a problem can I bring it up to you and I went and spoke to my son about to use to work with me and we were a bit disappointed and then I came back to the House and the House and the phone rang and they said it's been your transplant being 100 percent successful. So I told my son and he looked at me for a 2nd and then he said Paul when this chap arise this is boat we're supposed to be disappointed about how are we going to look disappointed. Puts things in perspective doesn't it. Doesn't it yes yes now he was a strange it but again amazingly you only lived a few miles apart how did you find out who Paul was and where he was well without the note and you're not allowed to contact them for 2 years. Obviously I sent to thank you letter but it's anonymous and he sent me a letter back and his letter was actually sank you as well. And then after 2 years if both parties want to meet you know that exchange. Telephone numbers addresses or whatever and you can made and how much did you want to please. Just. Desperate to meet him and what was he knew ahead before you miss. Well a total stranger has put themselves out to save your life. It doesn't get any better than that those are how do you prepare what are you going to say now. If this is the Such an emotional thing that I think you know you try and prepare and you. It won't work. But when I was best man at his wedding I had to do a speech at the end and I'd written the speech out because I thought when it came to just say it as it is I won't read the speech things. Let's go back to meeting you to arrange to meet so what was the 1st machine like. Well he came around to my house and. We just embraced each other you know it was it was such a nice such a special. Pose and I don't know 5 minutes in this really and then you we just sort of started talking. This father of 4 kids died in the cave you know that's why he had registered. And that's why he was please be able to do it I think you being about him and you immediately took us a new boat for a few days at Ross I did yeah yeah so was it just you know he was actually married his 1st wife 1st wife is he had a daughter We've got a daughter but the same age as our youngest daughter so we all went off on the boat What were those days like Cher in those days and those moments together. Well I. He was pulled a very generous person and he says he's just one of these very nice people as I've never known him do anything or be derogatory about anybody. He's such a fresh breath of fresh air to be with. The only thing that worried me a little bit was. Because I owed him so much I didn't want to keep pestering him. I gather understand that. I tried to be wary of that. Because obviously this is a man that said your life yeah you wanted to just be there thanking him and doing everything you could for this man but you realize that you know the limits isn't that it's well. The man I sing about with Paul was he was so pleased to do it but it was almost well it's not but. It was a more level relationship it wasn't quite so one sided me owing him of course I remember thinking but it wasn't it wasn't you know I didn't perceive the relationship like that you know it's just 2 guys here who are getting on really well there was an age difference Louise portion of the news. Most people are. That you mentioned the wedding yeah you became best friends and in July you were best man at his wedding and you talked about the speech that you wrote and then huge to talk from from the Haas Yeah yeah I was chemistry that speech. It was. I suppose. Can I say. It it's how important. Life is and how you one appreciates it and with somebody like Paul. Oh my. It's very truthful and honest everything I've done with Paul. Is yes the best by you know I can talk to about anything and hopefully he'll talk to me about anything you know there are many blokes who can say that all the no no we're real proprietary software and call it he was 10 years ago the pole side your life you speak as if it was still just can't believe that he did that matter can't not appreciate every day that comes along you know what's the last decade brought to you in your life I've. Well I got married in the hospital because I've been with my now wife we've been living together for years we got married because I thought she'd lose the house. I was I've sat across the Atlantic. I've. Given my daughter away when she got married. I've obviously been pulled best not one of our children got married. This summer in Greece all these things I was and we have 6 grandchildren now so what's it like how many grandchildren write another and you really are on the cd When Well tourism is starting we had to earlier. It's lovely it's lovely. You know when all the children grow up you know you think that houses that day but luckily. They keep coming back as a loss of life in us. It is good fun it is good here we have some good passes things. If someone's thinking of being at a standstill would you say stop doing the right you know it's. The procedure isn't that terrific. You know it's like it's a bit more intense but it's like giving blood. And you've actually save somebody is lost you know. I don't know it but they must be so rewarding to be able to do something like that. With your permission I'd like to put my Facebook page picture a few cell phone pole. A link. This could be very important what he wants the stem cell done on there as well and they can and if living like you know somebody wants to talk to me about. Now I don't know if I can i didn't pause the one who gave the stem cells but if there's any body who's going through the same sort of thing as me. Quite happily talk to them everybody's going to obviously. When they're. Approaching. Brad thank you very much indeed for joining me tonight and I just need to say that we are going to be talking hopefully to Paul on the show next week as well so we'll get his take on it as well next week. Have a lover. But so we have for going to get him on the show next week and thank you for joining me tonight how enjoy the rest the weekend with your family Wanny.
