Graham Tarentum My guest tonight is 60 year old Dave told what a retired police officer who now runs his own i.t. Company Dave was diagnosed with breast cancer just over 2 years ago in 2015 and is talking to me tonight in the hope it may. Other men too a cancer that very often overlooked in the vital early stages and they joins me in the program right now Dave thanks for what you do for fun of the time to talk to me tonight that's my pleasure so take me back then a couple years ago if you can You were on holiday in Florida and it. Was live goods by all accounts around about that time. A lot of very good it was my 1st. Always having a shower 1st thing in the morning right to going to matter. What's in the shower or washing my chest I found not right now I'm guessing that you have plenty on your mind that. Yes Being 1st day 'd that we had all sorts of things planned so yeah we 'd were going across the aisle to NASA which is one of the family. Meal plan. So yeah it was. 'd So this was the 1st time that you'd found a lump there was a understand that you had discovered a lump a number of years earlier 15 years earlier you know about 15 years. That was investigating the fact found to be fact. Ok so you already are aware of male breast cancer yeah yeah I was aware because that's how I was told that it could be breast cancer so yeah I've been aware of it. But as you said at that time it wasn't cancer I understand there is a history of cancer in your family about you your brother Tommy but you brother. You know when I was in fact was that the day I was all my parents and my father was told that my brother being diagnosed with leukemia. He at the time was 2 years old and in fact he died about 12 months later. So right in the very early. My mother was always very sensitive to things like lumps and bumps and I spent a lot of time being taken the doctor to be checked. Humid really drummed into. Yes she had because it was she from her perspective she was very worried about something happening and happening to her 2nd child so you know over the years I did have. One. Doctor that was dealt with yes she was very very careful to come isn't going to make. Herself. Died of cancer I believe. Yeah about 6 years ago she died of ovarian cancer you say there's a link between ovarian cancer and breast cancer the medical profession of said that it's a likely. A way to go to so you were necessarily looking for lumps on your chest just general changes in your body Yeah yeah I wasn't at the time I wasn't actually looking we just run my hand over my chest and that was felt shouldn't be there I have to say well actually checking my body a regular basis perhaps I should. Right and because there were things going on your life huge film was there did you dismiss it at that point no one felt. It didn't feel right so my 1st decision was not the same I think the rest of the family. I decided that I quite like the whole city whether it cleared up and if it did I would go to my g.p. Ok so you had a birthday good holiday but obviously this is in the back of your mind all the time so once you're back from your holiday what happened then. I don't tell myself after seeing my g.p. . But my doctor's name was Dr Reese Tolo and she was absolutely fabulous to help me with a couple of other. Illnesses about 12 months previously so great faith and I went so I said I got this lump should examine me and say well it's probably fatty tissue but I'll send you the breast cancer. Project just to be on the safe side Ok which is obviously the natural thing to do were you concerned at this point. No not really because my had to say because I had passed a tissue once my assumption was that we fatty tissue again. Adult are concerned that anyways and I was quite relaxed about it so the next thing then you went off to see the consultant what happened there. While walked in and his 1st comment on say was manic your age is almost certain to shoot but he got me to 'd lay down on the couch we. Were Soundscan. He looked the image I could see his face change the whole you don't like you're looking at. Sure enough he said. With a sunglasses like a biopsy. So it's a biopsy it was. A member match the color of the Plexiglas pipe. It tested READY. Off it went. Over to the results. And I'm going to sing time so long to the time for you to get the final diagnosis. It was a brow a week 10 days after that. Between sobs I had a mammogram which was quite an experience. And what was going through your mind during the sweet 10 days. I'd sing the image on the 'd screen. I don't remember what you look like and I have to admit being a technologist of course I did why shouldn't the wish was to go but it looks images of breast cancer and what I was seeing on the screen is very much. What I've seen on the screen the doctor surgeries. So some extent I was prepared for. Can you help yourself. Especially if you can why why didn't I didn't tell my. Wife Well I can't be 100 percent sure we are we know we're going together and. We will find out when we're going to have a fairly good idea that might be the end result. He went in together what's your exact diagnosis. My exact diagnosis was I have cancer a. Whole most receptive cancer by rights. And. That's the 1st time I think it really hit me. Yet being told you've got cancer of any soul. All sorts of things rush through you had. Even though you have Propecia self or that you were not beside myself you know when you're suffering from the somebody may say you've got breast cancer we defy anybody to come and take a deep breath and say you know it's the city questions or not coming to you head straight away. But a lot of adults. Are going to kill me you do have those like you that just. You READY know but the way we were looked after by the staff was just so can you remember the drive home with you. I can remember very well the kind of 10 or 15 minutes after being told because we were taken to a. Room with a breast cancer and she sat down with both. A few moments a team is. Concerned got ourselves together and then went back to see the surgeon and discuss you know where we were going to go with it so I remember about that I don't remember much much after we left the hospital. The question please. Yeah that's what. I want. I did you and. Your. Support Ok let's just catch her breath here for a 2nd if we can but if we took some or the few moments time online a crime talking to. I don't want to talk so much hateful. Ground trying to My guess this evening is 6 year old Dave told a retired police officer who now runs his own i.t. Company Dave was diagnosed with breast cancer just over a couple of years ago in 2015 or so following finding a lump on his chest whilst on holiday Dave returned home saw the doctor was referred to a consultant and a week to 10 days later was diagnosed with breast cancer so you tell me about the size of a Chuma the size of an a coonass Yeah a lot. Of things that I was quite amazed about. I call large will not. But it was very young as you can guess you got me for you know so as you said there was all those questions that seem at the time silly questions but you know obvious questions that people are going to ask and you know am I going to live what's life going to be like for me what's life like can be for the family as well you have children don't you Dave so what was the decision on talking to the children. Once I was diagnosed. 2 grown up children that she's so Iraqi explain. Clearly what the some upset on the telephone and I spoke to them. You know as soon as they got a breath but they were very much but I've been supporting me through trade. You are very determined very positive through throughout everything when you have a day I was diagnosed. In London 'd or because I've done it for 5 years before that this is because you know you just can't charities are not sort of I saw. This. Interfere in my mind it was my kind of 2 fingers to do the. Right from the outset and I was pointing it I was going to make something positive. Yes Yes I said that's it you towards Council back then. You know I don't I'm not sure it's I just needed to have a message to make to a meeting with so that when times got rough I had some of the kind of high I wanted to kind of. Drop a positive out of a very negative situation just mine were on my way because you. Know when you get news like this following a diagnosis the medical playful trying a few options so what were your options. Tony Eastley donations are quite limited because 'd cancers in the chest. So Image don't negotiate sense the type a mastectomy. There was a discussion about my nipple because I said what do I have to lose my little breast cancer so yes preferably on for sure but I was kind of a little bit deflated today of those have a bit of a deformed chest but very quickly realized that I needed to just go with it and do whatever is required and then we discussed chemotherapy and again you don't really have a choice because if you don't have the chemotherapy thing it's going to spread. There are many options to you other than to treat them well as well as the mistake to make you have to lymph node 3 moose underneath you want to know what to me. Basically when they remove. the 'd cancerous lump concerned that it's cancerous got to the lymph nodes and then beyond that the road. Well the suspect has made the cancerous numbers are exceptions in their areas so he feels the knowledge and experience level pretty good guess as to whether cancers got to them and the concern is if they get the lymph nodes the. Switchboard for the rest of the body so they get to live in the cancer spreads very very quickly. So my case the surgeon had a feel of my complaints wasn't happy with it so decided to remove the mole. And. So it doesn't have any real impact on he got lots of other employees which supported me for. My case went. To make an assessment and they go on their best judgment some of my listeners will understand what it's like to have chemotherapy and radiotherapy I don't know people that have been through it but not so pleasant experience on please. It's it's not a pleasant experience there's a lot you can do to. Which a guy. Suffering that you're going to go through. The most important. Is to do is the medical profession totally and since my sister works on call it uses stuff to meeting old. Lives she made it quite clear to make her be asked to take 26 medicine for example. To take it on a certain tolerance line she said even if your finger right. Type the medicine but you're supposed to take it on the chin following the instructions then Wall Street isn't pleasant you know you can make a guy mitigate some of. This sickness this tiredness. Maybe but because I work very intensely in a very confidentially challenging occupational I develop databases. I found it very distressing because for a week or a car was completely useless I couldn't focus I couldn't function so it wasn't fitting well so much that over. It was the inability to think straight. And it was 3 weeks cycle so basically you had. The treatment the week after the treatment which really was the worst we ever covered we were asked to then or we call prior to the next the next one could treat this very same plan the cancer the breast cancer test of the 3 scriptures I don't know one of the side effects can be the last habit that's something that you wanted to take in into your own hands. I saw spoke to the oncologist before treat myself with that of my hair and he said yes with this particular trait you will lead us on and so on then left on a wake up call for a week or so to commence Sale David went to my wife's headdress in order to receive Congress to say well Errol and again it's our last receiving the control. And I will do recognize it's a lot easier for a man to do that is really true for this reason you mentioned your concerns was the the loss of your nickel and I know that you've recently been to Center Parcs and you've had your chest. Moments for you. Just really for your non-strikers in the home is that for a week and I expected that a lot to do that will tell you maybe she can notice. A car member single occasion gravely actually looked at me is to say oh this is God he's got a skull a little so I think a lot of it was in the mall and. It was quite a surprise to us on the sign like you've been able to move on we quite positive outlook on life. Yeah life's kind of return to the old. Starting treatment 3 to read coming out the other end was just short of the. So I'm not at my head like. I should get them all. Stuffed much farther along with a touch of probably a touch of madness but I did it. And that was kind of really or was drawing a lot of. Health may still take a medication I still type. Want to do for another 10 years and close to the right time or. Yes I'm under tension how many of them and if you mess this has been through breast cancer I've actually met 7 of them and one was still in the country to 'd rush to. The beach. To kind of exchange notes. We have. Recently read 6 years ago together as part of a full. Ask her breast cancer and breast cancer awareness vent. So that's the 1st time in the numbers I also know that it's helped you to talk about this cancer public and understand that you've recently part of 2500 people. Colleagues from the police force another work locally is with the Police Federation in fact watchfully still on the gang project just last month just after the war. I was still homeless. So. For a number of years I didn't start on the new culprits so the Police Federation. My stand for me a bright pink or normal one a great segue from my status update to a very well had somebody said and then I was invited by the chairman to adjust the conference for a few minutes just at this going to make the well. Breast cancer source. Should never have the court the court assigned. Talk and get the message across tell me a little bit more about mood will that we've mentioned earlier and if people want to get involved Hi Candy. It's a fabulous challenge is. Something wanted for for quite is basically run a number of locations. On the set the one that runs in Iceland I think is one that will. If you gamble with the wall and with the page will come up you can sign up for 2 clocks of all those on the phone but in the full moon is a massive distance which is 26 miles from the heart. Tends to be slightly over half the last year it was $60.00 I think. Through the night so it starts about 10 o'clock 101 that I think is about 16000. Finally what's your message to all the men listening to you know having a chat. I think as a. Proxy a lot slower to consider problems in our bodies and perhaps the ladies. We tend not to be succumbing to go to the doctor 'd is what I would say to people is if your body changes it's not just what's in the breast it's generally if it changes from the whole it doesn't return so normal for a week it's a whatever it is get it checked on an interesting find a significant number of cans discovered in a and e.
