Is found some 40000 retail jobs have been lost all put at risk in the U.K. This year and slow sales online competition and rising costs are being blamed government Jones is an economics professor at Lancaster University there are other parts of the retail industry that are growing See you've got warehousing for large Internet companies such as Amazon but that employment tends to be more lumpy than retail employment in the high street so whereas every town has a high street there are only a few of these large warehouses so they're geographically concentrated in a lot of the people that are displaced from high street retail stores are not able to access employment in the new developing parts of retail Well 2018 has seen some high street trains like Maplin and Toys R Us shut down altogether with other brands like House of Fraser a new look and branch closes down Brailsford swooped in for 2 retail for more than 40 years he's been made redundant 5 times most recently this year very 1st. Basis for this embarrass the Premier League is. It's really unfortunate to see Chelsea beat fallen to nil to move them up to 3rd Brendan Rodgers said the football golds had written the script for their one they'll Scottish League Cup Final win over Aberdeen the only goal was scored by Ryan Christie who spent 18 months on loan with Aberdeen before this season I said to him that's the football gods of you know the it happens and it's been a great time Aberdeen a predicted partly development these last 2 years he's come back now showed he's ready to be a Celtic performer in the last 2 months he's been isn't so all of this served on a much watching that match at Hampden Park was the B.B.C.'s ready for Saif subsequent their 7th successive trophy under Brendan Rodgers under 18 the Scottish League Cup success overall but they were pushed all the way by an Aberdeen side disrupted by the head injury to Gary McCarthy Stephen that led to 6 minutes of 1st half time 5 minutes into that period they allowed Ryan Christie space but our right through a shot blocked by Joe Louis only for Christie to react with a left return to beat the keeper and ultimately secure the trophy Aberdeen's goal post kept out or get shot the Celtic Cross bar stopped to summon a bitch on goal and there was a penalty award that would never have got past when Aberdeen's ball headed against his own hand on the edge of the box just as was done when Louis St sink close attempted convention but that was as good as it got for the Dons and Celtic no I.R. Track cycling world cup and John Ryan got 7 birdies to win the hero well challenge by 4 strokes in the Bahamas and Rayment down now for a look at the weather his McMillan at the B.B.C. Weather Center good morning it's called Starting in Scotland the risk of icy patches on untreated surfaces out there after the wet weather we had for a time overnight cleared away on the clearing skies temperatures have dropped sort of at risk by some as a frost as well maybe a touch of frost into parts of Northern Ireland but here I think temperatures just a few degrees above freezing and sees a very mild start across South Wales and southern England where some of us have double figure temperatures so big rain to temperatures from north to south across the U.K. As Monday begins it's going to be quite a range of weather to come as well for Scotland many of those will be dry there will be a few showers in the north scattered showers coming through mostly of rain but into the hills you can see some of the wintry out of these new facts increasingly falling as sleet and snow to relatively low levels going into this evening but elsewhere in Scotland is mainly dry some sunshine for Northern Ireland bar the odd show will be mainly dry with sunny spells here of northern parts of northern England as well see some blue sky from come Britain to cast across to the fumble and but further south in northern England say Lancashire Greater Manchester Merseyside then across to Yorkshire will be some clouds more pics of rain spreading . Easter is a type name for whiles and for the rest of England baby if you brighter spells around but showers also longer spells of running spreading eastwards through the day that could be some heavy burst out there maybe a rumble of thunder and the breezy is weather as well but quite schoolie winds possible to South Wales and southwest England for a time after temperatures that range of temperatures continuing So highs in Scotland and Northern Ireland 4 to 8 Celsius northern England North Wales across to the Midlands $8.00 to $10.00 Celsius the south while southern England mild again at $10.00 to $14.00 degrees though tonight there will be a widespread frost most drawn on Tuesday was a windy weather coming back on Wednesday make not far by weather and a look now at this morning's front pages the Times reports the rapidly cooling relationship between Northern Ireland on the conservative government could be about to freeze all together he says the G.D.P. Has threatened to abundant in any confidence votes should he fail to get her breaks it deal through parliament the backstop is the focus of the Daily Telegraph's front page The paper says to reason May's chief breakfasted value want to activating backstop would be a bad outcome for the U.K. Leading to checks in the Irish Sea You're listening to Morning Reports It's now coming up to $515.00. Good morning 40000 jobs it's on the high street but what's happened to the work is the 1st was an absolute disaster and what has the money with and look we keep that was John Brailsford the former culprit right where it's been made redundant 5 times research shows there's now less demand for the high street retail staff than any other sector we'll be hearing more from John and speaking to a recruitment process later over in Argentina it seems that the U.S. And China made some soothing overtures to each other despite the trade war tango I'm trying has been tweeting about China lifting terrorist in the last hour any escalation of the rails on hold the 90. Days while the 2 sides hold talks will be speaking to one business strategist about what happens next Good morning Luis what you're looking at today yes stock market reaction from the G. 20 Asian shares are up sharply and also looking ahead to the OPEC meeting this week when oil production cuts are expected to boost the very weak oil price and with news that a problem from the old B.B.C. T.V. Series Allo Allo the famous painting of the fallen Madonna has sold 415000 pounds we want to know what memorabilia you would like to get your hands on do get in touch with us this morning 85058 or of course you can messages on social media using the hash tag wake up to money we've spoken an awful lot about retail over the last 6 months and it has been it's fair to say an absolutely torrid time on the high street around 40000 jobs have been affected by turmoil in the retail sector this year loss of high profile failures toys arose Maplin House of Fraser and many of resulted to C.V.S. To cut rents and closed shops so the team a wake up to money's been following the twists and turns in crunching the numbers and they've calculated this 40000 figure that's all jobs are affected by these big changes at major change it is a huge figure Luis Yes And the thing to remember about retail is it is the biggest private sector employer in the country something like almost 3000000 people employed in retail in High Street retail and so this is the big concern it's often also a lot of women with children who work part time not all absolutely but quite a lot and you know it's very interesting the other parts of the jobs go at SE Ptic to male jobs like car manufacturing there's a big outcry but when it is often felt that when sort of more female. Jobs disappear there is less of that quite and less of a government support and also don't forget with us that actually the consumer is the primary driver of the U.K. Economy 60 percent of the call is based on consumer spending will consumer investment in some way that's what makes us so crucial to Britain just in accounts to it is with us this morning director of 7 Investment Management and 40000 jobs lost when we spoke to a recruitment specialist any this year and was saying aware of people going to go and they suggested that there was a big sort of casual dining set to ready to take people on board when you get past that sort of you know 10020000 the casual dining sector is also struggling the I wouldn't go for casual dining there's been a lot of closures there is Wow So then you have to start wondering exactly where these people can go to find work. I mean frankly I would recommend retraining and I think something else I mean you know we heard that clip from that poor man has been made with the right made redundant 5 times in the retail industry frankly it's time to retrain and you have your library coffeeshops which is a whole library there already is stuff that people could well argue that coffee shops are at the peak Yes that's it a bit so the next stage is actually retreating into other often home working jobs which you can do online so different style of work altogether well gerund Jones is an economics professor at Lancaster University he's looked at official figures for the labor force over the past 5 years but of those that move into new jobs or getting jobs back in retail but of those that are moving into other sectors which is most retail workers that have been displaced the large concentrations are in health and social services but 16 percent move into that education about 12 percent money factoring again 12 percent so they go into a wide variety of different industries if you were to look for a common thread that would be that they are industries where a lot of people are employed who need people skills so 2 thirds of retail workers who lose their jobs and then get another job don't go back into retail but there's some people retraining is is a really tricky thing and perhaps it's what they've been doing all their lives and the prospect of having to start again is quite daunting but the problem is is if you've got bills to pay then retraining can be difficult. But you know there are sectors where unemployment is 4 percent in this country there are sectors that are screaming out for new staff I'm thinking teaching for example I was reading a page about a piece about the government desperately trying to get people into teaching the N.H.S. Actually retraining as a nurse there are a lot of jobs out there and don't forget the technology development as well huge demand as well for technology expertise in terms of be able to do electronics areas things like that again vast shortages Well John Brailsford. A former copyright worker I'm wakin he actually went back into retail even though he'd been made redundant 5 times the 1st time it was an absolute disaster and I just learnt so take a step back farmers often have a job and carry on since then I've been my read on them for more times most recently this year with copyright this year in a C.V. I very 1st thought There we go again they can completely out the bloke having been through it so many times before it was just a case of OK save updates get it on the list see why I'm still working in retail and work in retail because somebody once like me to a stack of Lokpal broke they said if they cut my arm off just so I retire all the way through. I think many people do feel that way once you've worked in retail for such a long time it is part of your D.N.A. Really are have a recommendation to Jerry and go into online retail where it's growing really fast Yeah I mean that online has been absolutely incredible the growth that it has seen over the past 5 years. And Sports Direct boss Mike Ashley Of course he bought House of Fraser and Evan cycles in recent months and he's going to be talking to M.P.'s A bit later on today about the future of the High Street it's going to be interesting to see exactly what he says to M.P.'s later Marks and Spencers Deborah norms and ours and also appearing in front of that I think it's communities it's not the Business Select Committee it's the local government and communities select committee because this of course is about how to make the high street vibrant it's primarily about bricks and mortar retail because they those are the things that which have been sort of propping up the High Street but for for around town centers it's now potentially about a mix about trying to find a way to keep them vibrant keep people turning out of this where the high street has to change because the whole. Concept that somehow traditional high street really is a bit of a figment of our imagination it's developed over the past few decades what you've got is towns and villages which come together which are a combination of places where you live you work and you play it's not just a retail high street so you want to get that mix back again and that's where a lot of town planners a failed and of course now it's Christmas time people you have to make a decision don't you whether or not you are going to actively go out and support your high streets or you going to do the easy thing which for many of us ease online we want to hear from you this morning what are you doing for your Christmas shopping do you work in retail have you retrained to get in touch with those 85058 or use the hash tag wake up to money on social media we also want to hear what you think about this story because a poor trade made famous in the B.B.C. Sit com a low or low has been sold 415000 pounds it is Louise the fall of a doormat with a big piece by fan club. I can't quite believe someone's buy 15 grand for it to be honest I'm still sort of reeling from that fact it is not the most attractive of painting shall we say done by a what a porpoise a baby. Prep that's why Prop artist that's not done by 5 years by at all and it was previously sold in 2007 for 4000 pounds pushing it. Might be a fair price for it but if the winning bid has come from a buyer a new view on friends so the auctioneer and the Stones said that the painting is going home. Where this rally was where the series was set so how lovely is that yes so I mean for me I mean 15000 pounds it seems like an incredible amount of cash OK for a prop yet so I can understand like. Like Marilyn Monroe's dress from some like it hot you know Marilyn Monroe an icon a global film I get the price 5 and a half 1000000 probably a little insight but I sort of get about you know you know Princess layers slave bikini from Star waltz we don't like that yeah I probably can wear it 96 grand you know again Star Wars is a global phenomenon princess like it's very memorable and you want I can get that but but great. It's not Star Wars and it's not Marilyn more. Properly about oh boy Robin I'm sure that we're going for quite a lot I've got some of those. But this is the investment isn't it I mean with $15000.00 pounds will it increase in value do you think it's about low interest rates low interest rates do is they boost prices of assets and if you're getting nothing from sit in your money in a bank then you might as well try to buy you have all of a daughter with a big boom be it because it might go up it's a direct connection with for a corpse What easy. We are discussing it is. Well do you get in touch with us this morning anything that you would spend that kind of money on he says I want Santa Claus is red braces and his red coat Justin Justin has a red braces I tell you what you send us your address I'll whip him off just the end of the program and put them in a B.B.C. And I got 46 pairs although there was. Little to find out that he wanted to get the felt because I love story and child I thought me down at work they generated thank you so we're also talking about the high street today and Tony has been in touch to say online is killing the high street I've been in store only and Ben in Glasgow says it retraining take it from me people will continue to purchase online they don't care about their fellows out of work or not we're going to be talking an awful lot more about retail later in the program but we're going to have a quick look at. Around that some of the papers what's called your eyes Luis U S front page of the toy tax man has Netflix in its sights over U.K. Accounts I mean it's the latest U.S. Tech giant being criticized for not paying what many consider to be sufficient amounts of tax according to the most recent accounts for its British subsidiary it employed only 14 people its London office by the end of December last year and in terms of the British ticket division declared revenues of only $24000000.00 pounds which does seem rather extraordinary in a profit before tax of just just about a 1000000 pounds as well and actually received an income tax credit apparently Thanks to government incentives for domestically produced films and T.V. Shows so another tech company in the sights of the government for tax was one in the mail this morning and it's also on the B.B.C. Business on line pages about Ted Baker this is a petition which has been launched by an employee which he accuses the owner and founder of Ted Baker 62 year old Ray Kelvin of inappropriate comments and behavior so there is a culture of forced. It is now 533 this is wake up to money with Louise Cooper and me Danny Hewson Let's have a quick look at some of the other business stories making headlines today the government is being urged to make firms publish their disability pay gaps up to research from the Trade Union Congress suggested the difference with other workers has hit more than $2800.00 pounds a year beer sales are up 4.4 percent on the same quarter last year thanks to England success in the World Cup in the hot summer that's according to latest figures from the British beer and Pub Association and the big issue is launching trials to allow its magazine sellers to accept contactless payments we're going asking you this morning about retail we're going to be talking a lot more about issues with the retail sector later on and we've had a number of people being in touch Simon has sent his this tweet using the hash tag wake up to money is considering the growth in online shopping I would have thought that there will be high demand for delivery drivers pickers and packers and Mike in Northampton says I left Casual Dining the casual dining sector after 17 years to invest in myself at a cost of $8000.00 pounds to retrain as a plumber but living weekly on the pay check it's not easy but better training in skills based work is worth the effort he wishes that he had done it sooner and miking Taunton also says retraining after working for a local newspaper for countless years was made redundant 2 years ago retrained as a coach driver best thing I've ever done should have done it years ago talk to the plumber if you get qualified as a gas engineer your It'll be even better I'm currently having a new boiler fitted I will watering amounts of money all and trees I just have a quote for a big tree to be taken down in my garden oh heavens both jobs jobs that you and I probably shouldn't be doing cutting down trees while hanging off them with a chainsaw and putting a boiler in with gas that is flammable the. It is the reason why they are very highly paid that is the reason why and that is the reason why so many people are now looking at retraining we're going to be talking a lot more about retail a little later in the program do keep us just coming in a father of 58 or use the hash tag wake up to money but going to talk about the G. 20 summit now because in the palace Doua President Trump has tweeted China has agreed to reduce and remove tariffs on cars coming into China from the U.S. Currently the tariff is 40 percent and it comes after a breakthrough at the G. 20 Summit of the world's most powerful leaders where China and the U.S. a Great talk to Hoult to greed to halt talk about new trade tariffs for 90 days to allow time for talks because I mean there's been a huge amount of tariff put on good since July the U.S. Has hit $250000000000.00 worth of Chinese goods with tariff China's retaliated with duty's on $110000000000.00 of U.S. Products the question of course is what next will Kitty Smith is founder and C.E.O. Of Jean-Pierre new like an agency that helps Chinese companies do business in Europe and a former business strategist based in Beijing China Good morning Kitty Good morning and I suppose basically just give us an outline of exactly what has been going on between these 2 sides why are they in dispute. Might's well you might remember back in May of this year President Trump announced that he would be increasing taxes on a range of Chinese products by the U.S. In particular steel he was doing this is part of his strategy to bring job's especially manufacturing job back to America and President Trump is also very concerned about the trade imbalance between China and the U.S. But many people think this trade dispute between China and US is actually about more than just money fracturing jokes and about more than just the U.S. Trade deficit with China it's also a battle wills between $2.00 great powers one of which is the world's No I just economy America and another where China which will one day like to become the words are just economy and it could be argued that the battle for global supremacy to be the a country that the world's number one economic power probably going to be won by China so this is a difficult battle long term battle for America to win. You know Jeremy it's a it's a long term it's a difficult battle to win and that may be partially the reason why President Xi Jinping was willing to was willing to concede some concessions to to President Trump and to America in this current round of negotiations he might have a much longer term plan just as and he wants to focus on because what the trade talks how far the trade dispute between China and the U.S. Has been going on since Arjuna's here has and has John is its impact to China in a number of ways and one of which is obviously in terms of trade export is perhaps find new markets for their products which are now much more expensive and America the stock market is down in China but the key thing for the Chinese Is this because China is a very planned economy and a very chance Assayas see China had not planned for this and it's true in their focus away from their their their much bigger foreign policy problems we still we include North America details talking to a couple of expletives last week and they said that get this the central term pain at the moment but actually this will reset things and potentially puts the whole import export thing on a much fairer a much more level playing field. Yes that's definitely true although I suppose it depends on where in the world. The expertise is saying the bus and if you look at the Europe and the U.S. For instance Europe and the U.S. Have been. Sending to each other on basically the same tariff for the past 10 or 15 years while China is still maintaining this sort of trade war where in which and they will they can send out products to the world on really low terms specially if we want to send products in China and they they will go in a much higher tariff and I think there is there is an understanding or an acceptance now even within China that this has to change and Dave in a sense gotten away with this group for long enough and they will be prepared to make those concessions but those concessions would be around very traditional products like airport like steel like soya and they won't be around this in the new products like and the digital currencies and about Iran and the intellectual property around technology and technology sharing and this is where the next chapter in this will will be. Well let's be like NAFTA you know the North American Free Trade Agreement now it's been renamed to something else President Trump has supposedly read against a state within a matter of months and got better terms from Canada or and Mexico or he claims but if you look at the details substantially not much has changed is that what you're expecting or China or or do you expect something substantially really to change or John this is just the opening opening and I think it's just the opening gambit is really and I also think that it's quite easy for China to make these concessions around like a sandwich to tional products like I'm a cultural context. And then do so as it's things because you see this is being this is being a long time in the ocean and and China is really making these concessions at the absolute 11th hour and you know having made those concessions day then you look as if they have. Cooperated with the international trade market where. Do. The tariffs and the. Trade incompatibilities if you like between the systems in China and in the US and Europe and will in the future really be around technology IP rights that's international proxy rights and technology sharing All right thank you very much indeed Kitty Smith founder and C.E.O. Of Jing P. New in Beijing China we're going to keep very close eye what happens in those next 90 days release shares in Asia are up strongly on the back of that truce in the trade war between the US and China the Shanghai Composite currently up almost 3 percent with a still with a view from the city just in a director of 7 Investment Management Now this should be good news for pretty much every global stock market and every global economy because almost every country was was being hit by a US trade war. I want to need to be careful here given because it was interesting to hear Jack Ma of the a billionaire you talk about who runs Alibaba member of the communist banner Progress Party absolutely now believes his comments what I thought was fascinating was basically saying near respect to what the Americans do in terms of trade tariffs we will just trade around them we'll go elsewhere this is where America needs to be careful because you'll find that the roots do not go back exactly as they were before suddenly they'll be carving out alternative ways of doing trade with other partners this is where trade boards actually calls longer term damage it does not go back to the old route just like rivers finding other ways to try and flow through Iraq so you'll find us with a trade as well what do you make of this these tweets in the last half hour from chump China's agreed to do some of these tariffs on American cars from 40 percent well yes you wave a flag and say look what I've done until turned around to his his audience and approve success but of course actually what he's been able to show is that yes some of those old tires were there others of course have actually already been adjusted so be very careful actually being told here it's not so much fake news alternative news alternative you selective facts exactly some P. 500 in the high tech mass back in the states both up strongly last week up over 4 percent and it's because U.S. Interest rates not going up as much as previously this is the fear the fear about you that interest rates will may be slowing but when the whole idea is that actually American economy is on a sugar rush it's doing really very well it needs higher interest rates but the comes a stage when those rates go up to a certain level then you'll find that the yields a 10 year yield on those U.S. Treasuries we have to make our incumbent borrowing cost suddenly fondant you people move out of equity markets into the these treasuries which are regarded as low risk but giving a reasonable yield the trick tipping point to that it's a normal run about 3 percent which is where we are it hasn't happened yet the line is it's different this time a really is it I think we need to be very careful indeed we skeptical when we hear it's different this time oil prices also up strongly in Asia both the U.S. West Texas and Brant crude. Up 5 percent now November the oil price had the largest monthly loss in almost 10 years so is this a sort of temporary bounce off weakness or something a bit more substantial This is still see huge amount of political involvement here bear in mind you had the Franco's in America adding the positions of the Americas and the astonishing the largest exporter of oil or producer of oil then you've got your course you've got this year what's happening with Iran you know them becoming back on top again so there are all sorts of fluctuations and of course the people who actually really control the taps are the Saudis are they actually going to do what Trump is willing to do and the answer is probably yes at the moment so they're the ones who are actually controlling a pick and OPEC Thursday in Vienna Sterling likely to be volatile in the 8 days before but Parliament gets to vote on Prime Minister May's Breck's deal and today the attorney general is making a statement to the House of Commons about the legal advice given to the government it's ghostly watched so squidgy selling at the moment you have no idea which way it's going to be going why are we going to see that. You reject the agreement coming towards it the answer is very likely then what happens and we really don't know what happens in that category because what happens is stunning it gets weaker so watch out for the moment when we we were at $150.00 before referendum we went down to $12128.00 against the dollar we could see that we can again and we also have some worrying signs of a U.K. Slowdown today this time from the E.F. Manufacturing and engineering trade association What are they saying this is interesting here the trade war and the BRICS it is used to pressing factory growth here and I think this is a I know an I suppose inevitable issue why remembers one word that runs economy confidence so confidence not just from consumers but also from industry saying I'm not going to invest for the moment until you can tell me where we're going it's hardly surprising so we must make a clear decision whatever your view is make that decision to get on with it JUSTIN URQUHART STEWART Thank You The Footsie ended down point 8 percent on Friday house builders and mining stocks particularly weak and traffic. To 5 gas staffers near an anglo american all in the red quick look at currency markets a pound buys just less than $128127.00 something and a pound buys just over one euro 12 cents. For news. This is B.B.C. 5 cups of money it is $546.00 now with the latest 5 live news here shall Abang violent labor is demanding details of the. Published in full 40000 retail jobs put at risk. And a major international agreement change summit starts in Poland later said to be the most critical 2015 this is B.B.C. Radio 5 Live available on the B.B.C. . So lots of you've been in touch this morning about our top story because wake up to money has calculated about 40000 jobs have been affected by up he pulls on the High Street this year and the recruitment and Employment Confederation says R E C that's now less demand for high street retail workers than any other sector it's become one of the major stories of 2018 it all kicked off in earnest back in February when toys arose and Maplin went into administration on the same day wake up to money's James Graham has been following the story James How have you worked out these figures morning you know well we've just been tallying up all the big announcements or year or so since January and we've just been looking at all the major chains so the you know the the big high street brands that most people are familiar with and it's a mixed picture you know some businesses have gone bust and vanished altogether like planes were Toys R Us others have clothes shops like copyright a new look some plans to plan to close shops in the future. And others are still working on restructuring plans I should say House of Fraser is one of those it went into administration or. August Sports Direct bought it and Mike Ashley the boss of Sports Direct he said he wants to keep about 80 percent open but he's working through that process at the moment which involves renegotiating the terms with landlords so far about 20 have been saved protecting about 4000 jobs and what's behind all of these closures James Well we do talk about these factors quite frequently I mean the most common reasons are high cost such as rents and that's that's clearly been a factor with House of Fraser and business rates that's been a massive issue for you know for several years now also online I mean I was surprised that in November 18 percent of all retail sales were spent online I thought it might be been higher but the growth is quite startling from 10 years ago it was just 5 percent now 18 percent also some questioned the ownership structures of these businesses so quite a lot of them are private equity owned like Toys R Us Maplin Evan cycles and in those cases they've got a lot more debt because often they've got a fast growth strategy and that means they're less able to withstand cost pressures from the likes of business rates and I think if you go around the country talk to people in different towns you find there are local factors people complain about parking traffic and social behavior all these issues that might put them off going shopping but consumer spending has been holding up it was better in the 1st half of the year is tailed off a little bit in the last few months but that could be the Black Friday effect with people holding out for a bargain it's quite interesting you say we have the text in saying we set up to go shopping on the High Street on Saturday but after 40 minutes queuing entrapping we gave up and went home will try cycling next time small presents for all concerned but what about the broader picture at our shop still opening the AFA feel I need to stress with these figures that we're just looking at this snapshot it's not really a net picture of. What's happened so fortunately an outfit called the local data company they do measure openings and closures across the country they look at high streets in about $3000.00 locations and they reckon in the 1st half of the year there was a net loss of about 4 and a half 1000 shops so that's that's the trend we're looking at and just very briefly James what's the government saying well I mean it says it's working on this in the budget the chancellor Philip Hammond unveiled an official plan for the high street he's he's kind of stop short of a full reform of business rates instead of spending money reducing the bill for small retailers but that's only for small firms and Mike Ashley who is speaking today in parliament he calls that a token gesture because it misses out the big players there's also a fund of about 600000000 pounds to help pay for him for improvements on the high street and they're going to consult on planning reforms to make it easier to turn empty buildings into accommodation OK James Graham thank you very much now of course when you're looking at the big picture of me talking about these huge numbers of stuff being affected it's very easy to forget the people behind it John Brailsford is a former copyright work in Wigan he's been in retail for 40 years and has been made redundant 5 times Hi I'm John I've worked in furniture retile for 42 years. Man and Boy who can scream you think you think you'll wind. Up in my read on the 5 times most recently this year very 1st thought. There we go again. Wasn't for saying they can completely out the bloke. Having been through it so many times before it was just a case of OK save a update get it out and let's see what happens but. Yeah working in retail today is completely different from what it was 10 or 15 or 20 years ago the Internet had a massive impact. Furniture shops furniture city resale in general need to up the on say they need to have both sets of the business by both the bricks and mortar side and an incident presents to succeed that was that will just fall by the wayside are you looking at someone in the range of a $4000.00 pounds. The 1st I was maybe don't was probably the scariest you wonder what's going to happen tomorrow you've got no income you've got no prospects. Just get yourself out there start networking think of the skills that you go and never be afraid of taking a step back after that myself I've gone from regional control so you salesman in the business and work my way back up it can happen so that's John Brailsford a former cop it right with his now retrained he's decided to stay in retail He's just moved across but of course that's something that's not open to everyone we're joined now by Kate McCarthy who runs McCarthy recruitment in Manchester Bristol Good morning Kate good morning so. People from the resale sites it now looking for work. I think so you know we haven't seen a decline in applications and people looking for work I think there's an opportunity to transfer skills into different sectors and that's what we've done as a business so we're no longer just retail specialists we work in a number of sectors and I look at where we've placed retailers and that money factor in even into the environment away sectors so there's a huge opportunity out there for people so when you get somebody who's worked in retail coming in what do you help them what do you advise them what do you say to them to me it's about understanding exactly what they want out of their life as opposed to a job so where do you see South what's important to you for your family and what is it that you want and I think is then reflected on that understanding does that mean staying in retail does that mean looking at the skills and transferable skills you've got on and I've been to all the things I think people need to look at who they are and what they want and go from there as opposed to think of sector specifically it's about skills and people as opposed to retail or a specific sector because it can be daunting pulling Boma spin into it she says I'm not sure it's fair to say retail workers should retrain as teachers so I T. Work because they require a different learning aptitude and even retraining to be a nurse isn't likely jump on option for all retail workers that's a fair point kind of but I mean I remember about 10 years ago placing a nurse into retail and it worked really well so I think again it's about a person about that behavior is about that potential and I actually from going in working in recruiting into new sectors and we specialize in retail for about 10 years so moving into new sectors for us was a little bit different and what I've actually realise is retail workers people from resale highly skilled and actually much more competent in many areas and all the sectors and I think retailers need to be proud of what they've achieved and who they are in the work that they do and go out there and celebrate that So my view is that you can be anything you want to be if you put your mind to it and you focus and actually reached out. It's a fantastic foundation for that in terms of the sort of the numbers of people coming to you who have lost their jobs in retail What's the split between retraining going back into retail or moving into something completely different Give us a sense so all of that I can give you a sense I haven't got a specific a for me people tend want to stay in retail and they tend to come to us worried so for me it's all about security and their personal situation so often people say well what if I don't have a job in retail moving forward have to stay in retail is it going to exist and ultimately a lot of people say that to you they do I think was just having for that for the last few years I'm out remember 2012 was the last time that it felt like this you do get a sense of redundancies really scary for people and actually my teams are trained to talk to about how about feels and often it's a mind game and it doesn't feel great but actually they're still fantastic just because you've been made redundant doesn't mean anything other than you've been in the wrong place at the wrong time normally you'd not be able to affect that at all and it's about given the confidence to go back into the job market so yes I think they come in that respect and say Should I stay in retail My advice is that all the jobs in retail as well are talking about the high street we're not talking about back office e-commerce marketing head office etc retail still exists and is thriving in many areas have got many clients that are opening stores and doing really well so I think there's a broader perspective to think about this what about flexibility because of course for many people particularly working moms they go into retail because they need the flexibility if they're looking for their in another job can you redirect them other opportunities Yes And I think businesses in every sector have to wake up to the fact that flexibility is absolutely key and you know and I believe in that too you know my business is fully flexible whether it's a more adult you know because everybody's got different needs so. I mean I still think retail had offices have a way to go was talking to a business only last week about that and to say that to create pure diversity you need to be flexible about working practices so it's probably being offered more on the shop floor than it hasn't had offers in back offices but that is changing tape and it has to what what percentage of the people come to you Do you actually retrain or is that still quite small at the moment I think it's still really small Yes When we place people into money factoring into waste into hospitality or see hostile to retail very similar maybe 5 percent 10 percent maximum retail still house businesses that are opening stores and doing well you know I get frustrated really and say you know Willie's talk about omni channel and retail sales are fluctuating but you know every sector every business that to the minute a struggle Internet stand because we all live in a sense of uncertainty and that affects the consumer so I personally I still celebrate reseller get frustrated when it's all doom and gloom the some fantastic great stories out there of stores opening and business is thriving and just just talking about not being able to get to the high street because of traffic Well there's a clue in that because everyone's going shopping came from McCarthy recruitment in Manchester thank you very much indeed Dave and also has been in touch say people do still enjoy high street shopping in Walsall the town center and strategic planning on shops markets is a disaster and this is quite an interesting one about retraining the ways I was made redundant from Sainsbury's 2 years ago when they closed the store after being there for more than 10 years it ended up being the key kind needed a move to public transport and I've already been promoted twice so there are opportunities good luck here fabulous new love to hear stories like that but of course for the high street it is about whether or not we choose to shop there isn't it yeah it is consumers I'm afraid it's all full of a lot easier online you know I need to buy some elastic my daughter's football shorts keep falling down and you know well it's so quick online I didn't even know in the High Street where I would find it. Thank you very much always that is it from Wake up to money breakfast is next. 6 Hours Mystery original. Program to be an expensive. B.B.C. Radio Shropshire and. The news and 6 o'clock I'm Faith page the Attorney General Geoffrey Cox will make a common statement this afternoon about his legal advice to Cabinet colleagues on the Bracks a deal done in St insist the details of such advice must remain confidential but opposition parties together with the Democratic Unionists and some conservative brought to tears are demanding that it's published in full shadow BRACKS It Minister Jenny Chapman says the government has to come clean before next week's vote on the Dale we want to see the full advice so that we can take this very important decision there is precedent for legal advice being shared in exceptional circumstances and we would say that this is an exceptional circumstance so we are with we were aware of everything that said it not just those aspects of it that the prime minister has chosen to provide us with so far figures compiled by the B.B.C. Suggest that 20000 jobs have been lost in the retail sector this year a similar number of people are also threatened with redundancy the recruitment and employment compared to ration says are currently fewer vacancies for shop floor staff than any other category of worker. A nurse who was instrumental in having history's knife Angel sculpture put on display in Liverpool says it's already getting people talking about knife crime the angel which stands as 27 feet tall is made of thousands of knives and was created at the British I work center to raise awareness about the issue it's on show outside Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral for the festive period Liverpool and a nurse Rob Jackson says it's an important symbol we're not naive that we don't think suddenly we're nice crams going to stop because we've got this amazing scope to that what we do know what we've seen already is a people will engage there's already conversations people are challenged by some people don't like you look like you some people rage but actually to gauge people in conversation by crime is not an issue that can be solved purely by the creature it's a social issue it's a public health issue and we as communities have to start looking like this is not . Food banks across Russia have seen a significant increase in demand over the last year figures from the Trussell Trust show that the number of uses of food banks has doubled Helen McSherry from the Market Drayton food bank says it shows no sign of getting any better due to the change in the benefit system in Telford in the last 2 or 3 months I can said it's increasing even now and I can say that it's probably a. Universal Credit to Market Drayton that's one of the main reasons the favorite swept the British Independent.
