Leant so thank you you can get in touch by texting 13 double 3 you might want to get in touch about the general election the leaders debate last night I mean be talking about that surely we can have a bit of a. We can condense it so if you missed it where were you and talk about the with the winner the losers whatever whether or not any there were any sort of lethal strikes chairing the debate last night if you were watching it let me know what you thought you might want to get in touch about this general election on Thursday what issues matter to you might be Breck city might be the n.h.s. What about the environment the environmental great extinction rebellion in Sheffield says this is actually a climate change general election the group are staging a day of flood thing protests in the city center today Peta Gilbert is one of the coordinators who has arrived in a wet suit. And Gogol I'm really really soaking you know we've had flooding everywhere there's severe weather warnings across South Yorkshire we are inundated with horrible horrible predictions for the future of our climate if we don't act now so that is why you are in a website you've got the boat involved in today's pater's Yes So we're inviting the people of Sheffield to come and join extinction rebellion in the center of town today we have March planned starting from Devon should green at $830.00 and we're going to be joining our big yellow boat a symbol of extinction rebellion and the plight that our nation and our world faces and that's outside the city hall so we invite all Sheffield people to come and join us and talk to us and especially candidates in the general election we invite all candidates from all parties to come and talk to us about the climate election and to pledge to support. The 3 demands Bill will talk about what you Eve made of the general election campaign safer and what the various different parties a saying about climate change but this today's action you are going to be disrupting anyone because rebellion has. Certainly Come in come under quite a lot of criticism locally and also national a. Regarding the tactics we've had massive queues gridlock people pimping their homes not very happy today's action is not not not about them to be clear today's action is a non disruptive action and is that because Eve listened you've changed tack I would say that right now week we know that our tactics in the past have worked we have brought the climate change issues we're not talking about climate change anymore are we were talking about climate emergency we just had the secretary general of the u n tell the world leaders that we have literally years to act before the changes are era Voc a bull we are facing a an emergency unlike anything that humanity and nature has faced ever before now our tactics previously when we have blocked some roads in Sheffield have raised this they have been part of that tactic of raising the conversation and I'm sorry what I'm going to say is if you're in a burning building. And the fire brigade have yet to arrive you don't say are well do we really need another 999 call you keep calling you keep calling until the emergency services arrive said you think those calls have actually cut 3 let's talk about the general election campaign because you know your calling it a climate change general election do you think all of that the protests or the disruption has actually got gots to the politicians do you think they are listening it's. Certainly got through to them they are listening you've just seen on Channel 4 the 1st leaders' debate on climate change all the leaders were in their world that says it all doesn't it we have our prime minister of this country who doesn't think it's worthy to come and talk about the climate issues now that shows a clear lack of leadership the conservatives say that they are putting forward lots of very very green policies Well speaking personally and not speaking for x. Are I can say that conservatives are completely wrong or right Ok I'm sure they would rather not defend themselves. Last night in the latest about he's. Not sure if you watched it but there wasn't a single question asked about the environment I wonder if how you feel that they're letting us down I think they're letting down your unborn child out of the audience I wonder if you fail. Greens the audience questions I wonder if you feel that the message has got 3 to the general public do you think I think certainly the general public today in a recent poll published in The Independent which is owned by big media has put out that the climate issues are higher in the general population of Britain's opinions there as in they are more important than the economy Ok so you think there's been a big change you would like people to join you. Today Do they have to wear when they certainly don't have to wear wet suits but they're very welcome to turn up in their snorkels in with towels basically we're saying dress for flooding this is a severe weather warning event and it's tied into extinction rebellions 12 days of crisis campaign in the build up to the climate election this is the last election that can actually make the changes we need as in the next government are crucial to whether we save the planet that we know and love or lose everything we want to have in our future Peter thanks very much for talking to me today but one of the coordinates x. To leaders they want to convince you that they deserve to be prime minister tonight Boris Johnson leader of the Conservative Party and Gerry Corbin leader of the Labor party go head to head in the b.b.c. Prime ministerial debate. Thanks we will within 3 months negotiate a leave agreement with the European Union that will protect trade and jobs and put that alongside remain in a referendum within 6 months we have a deal it's a wonderful deal we're coming out on January 31st if we can get a working majority and I'm afraid listening to Mr corballis at absolutely clear our country would spend a whole year more blocked in debate about bricks if. We believe in n.h.s. Free at the point of use and no under no circumstances will we sell it off to anybody the prime minister says is not going to do that sort of a trade deal if that's the case why does the talks go on for 2 years it doesn't take 2 years to say no this is pure triangle stuff we've heard it time and time again from the Labor Party during this election campaign there will be hearing about the remember next. We will within 3 months negotiate a leave agreement with the European Union that will protect trade and jobs and put that alongside remain in a referendum within 6 months we have a deal it's a wonderful deal we're coming out on January 31st if we can get a working majority and I'm afraid listening to Mr types that our country would spend the. Whole year war but in debate about bricks Well there we go and that's that was what happened very condensed I watched the whole thing as did our political correspondent who was in the spin room that's what they call it just outside the stadium angling with politicians and pundits. How how did you think the debate when I rule my morning. You know I thought it was a little less fractious than the 1st head to head to pay we have 93 a couple weeks back a little more prime ministerial perhaps Jerry called into living down the lens resulting in closing statements very polished conference Boris Johnson a fluent speaker as usual. But didn't talk quite as much over his opponent or the question master Nick Robinson like in a previous debate he still did a bit of that took a bit of hosting by Nick Robinson but but not as much but more measured there wasn't any real audience heckling the b.b.c. Had asked them not to and I think that helped change the tone in the studio somewhat That said I'm not sure how much more we learn about either men or their policies both clearly had strategies Boris Johnson to talk about a lot and he did bring almost every answer back to it Jeremy Corbyn to kind of repeatedly try and focus on public services the n.h.s. And investment and he did so I mean both seem much more rehearsed and polished and was a lot more sort of well used go to prepared lines than perhaps in the 1st debate but maybe that's just a reflection they've both been on the campaign trail rehearsing their arguments for quite a few weeks now it did feel calm some might say somewhat say a bit more boring than others. I'm not some people might say that they had an hour of course how much ground they cover in that in terms of the questions that were asked. You know a fair bit actually I thought they were the good old the n.h.s. Lies told by politicians security Breck seats you know how will we pay for your plans the you know the economy and that led to some interesting exchanges because both had pointed out to them that the Institute of Fiscal Studies says both Labor and the concerted sums aren't credible Nick Robinson sort of tried to skewer both men on that now both men disputed that it was interesting to see how they tried to handle that and I'm not sure why they gave their best chances in response that a lynching They chatted with the Lib Dems representative afterwards on our program last night with Adrian Goldberg if you were listening and they were saying look had Joseph Winston been allowed to be in the debate then she would have pointed out the r.f.s. Has said there sums a much more credible but she wasn't in the debate neither were the greens they were reflecting their disappointment the climate change didn't come up as a question last night the Braggs of party Well that big issue did a lot but they were sort of saying to me they felt that neither man had told the truth about drugs which is a theme actually kept the came up in the room in the debate because Jeremy Corbyn was saying Look Johnson you're not being straight about how Northern Ireland will be affected by this break that deal nor you being straight about the n.h.s. Being for sale to the us in trade talks afterwards Now Boris Johnson repeatedly said it's just not true that there are going to be sort of you know big pharma companies taking over medicines in the n.h.s. From the us afterwards but Jeremy Cohen was saying with that's true why have you had this sort of pop up for 2 years in stations you've been having with us officials because it doesn't take 2 years to say no so some interesting exchanges in clashes I say the covert bit of ground although I guess a lot of the answers were really things we had before well that's that I just wonder if he fell at the point there was a kind of knockout blow or anything that could change the course of the election. I mean that would have been the hope particularly I think for labor her behind in the polls wouldn't it that this would be their big moment I think I don't think there was that that meant that there wasn't a big knockout blow both had moments where they they even from an audience that was told to be a bit more subdued that the audience got involved and clap so Jeremy Corbin got a big clap for saying he'd take privatization out of the n.h.s. He got big claps for challenging Boris Johnson's claim that the Tories will build 40 new hospitals Jeremy Corbyn pointing out a number of times that you're going to build 6 you've got money for 6 is just not true you doing 40 and that got applause Johnson was stronger when he went on the attack about Labor's Bracks it plan repeatedly questioning look you know how can you labor renegotiate the deal as you claim you will with the you when you're going to stay Jeremy Corwin neutral on the issue how can you negotiate from a neutral point of view going to try to cheat even who in your team he said he's actually going to do the negotiating given most of the labor's from Bench are actually in favor of remaining so who's going to negotiate a deal to leave when they're all you know pro remains so it's a good sort of strong exchanges but at the end of it I was actually sitting cap next to a guy from the polling organization who turned to me to say that they had scored it with their instant poll reaction of 522482 Boris Johnson which shows that I mean those 2 numbers ironic I think we're really at saying yes we are in recent years. But yeah it just shows how close it is I mean I think in the referendum people might dispute how close that is as a result in this that definitely is a result the shows it was close last night between these 2 men and the think. You know I think they both will just be pleased there was no major you know screw up that nobody messed up nobody. You know got it all horribly wrong and so we're not talking about anyone having to knock themselves out of the. Race last night but I suppose they wake up this morning going right we've got 6 days to go. 5 full days of campaigning left and they'll continue to try and hold their respective positions as we head to that polling day on Thursday thank you so much political correspondent he were watch the but debate so you don't have to. And. Still is available on catch up if you want some of the day more there is nothing like. You bad it's just your mind though it. Is gas mains working tempi lights there until Monday around. Still looking pretty quite out in about. A week because. Basically if you spot a problem call this on the. Once you want to. Make money has had a good morning the final head to head then the debate between Boris Johnson and Jeremy Colburn has seen them clashing over the n.h.s. Racism in their ranks and brags that pledges made by Labor include replacing England's anti bus league with electric models and the Tories promising to increase funding for grassroots football as part of a bid to host the 2030 World Cup in the u.k. And Ireland in central Sheffield today extinction rebellion says it's staging a day of flood themed nonviolent civil disobedience as part of a National Climate Campaign They'll be marching from Devon shagreen this morning singing what they describe as crisis Carole's there are other events planned by the group throughout the day in the central Sheffield and a British explorer who was involved in the rescue of a tiny football team from a flooded cave has lost his defamation case against the billionaire Musk Vernon took legal action in Los Angeles after Mr Moss called him a paedo guy on Twitter weather forecast a dry some bright spells today for most at least the high around 10 Celsius we already know that we've performed against teams in those top by positions this is Gary monk to beat them you know and we should have beaten them we know. Bradford proven Are we capable it's about we already know that we're capable but. Of course everyone else will lot to products like you to do it changes so fast and of a motivation for us that's this afternoon's game Gary Monk says he's using the fact that the else have yet to beat a side in the top 8 of the championship this season as a way of motivating his players Bosley they had to South Wales hoping for back to back wins to potentially lift them off the foot of the championship Cardiff City of the Reds hosts recently relegated from the Premier League and with new boss Neil Harris at the helm he has bonds Lee had to coach get how it's true but it's a special a game is strong game really expect a bone in 3 of the big strange in the set plays situations and that the we've good stranger in the break the rich moves from our game and I think it's a very difficult task but we have a good conflict in our plan and also in our ask and the Bluebirds against Pons Lee live on all frequencies from 3 o'clock in football heaven while the United and the darkest are both home today in League One the Millers could go 3rd with a win against Rochdale and Rovers host struggling m.k. Dons aiming for 3 points potentially to get back into the top half of the table. In National League football Chesterfield welcome 2nd place Bromley to the stadium the spire writes a looking to end a run of 5 games without a win trying to climb out of the relegation spots in boxing Anthony Joshua weighed in at 16 stone 13 that's 10 pounds lighter than when he lost his heavyweight title and the Ruiz Jr in June ahead of their rematch in Saudi Arabia tonight Ruiz tipped the scales at 20 stone 3 that's 15 pounds heavier than when they previously met for what's likely to happen tonight well now anyone's guess but Mike Costello will be there for the b.b.c. And has earned tens of millions of dollars in his career so far when he gets cracked on the chin that's when you start to find out how desperately he still wants this legacy to be not intact to be repaired so now the question is do you want to be remembered as someone with more than dozens and dozens of well as local rugby union action this afternoon Darcus tonight's host the Newcastle full consume pull 2 of the championship Cup at 230 and then the National League want to 2 o'clock rather than Titans they travel to face the old elf Amiens in ice hockey Sheffield Steelers suffered a heavy 62 loss away at the Belfast Giants and the 2 sides meet again tonight for game 2 of the weekend's double header and in basketball the Sheffield Sharks got their revenge they were knocked out of the b.b.l. Cup last weekend but they defeated Bristol flyers 85 points to 71 to b.b.c. Radio Sheffield news and sport at 34 mainly before we knew hearts and is that a store a family story that needs to pass down from one generation to the other we can be talking about this brilliant project where young people click stories from from older people and people from different communities that is there is story that you would want to pass on to your kids or they've heard a 1000000 want one of the story. Told quite a lot to people or anyone who listened to it was the butt. In the old days where. People selling all sorts of stuff for. Bread. They've all but died out but I haven't seen one for a very long time but the story was that prices were something of a talking point on the street. Coming down the street in the said to one of my sisters get me a pound of Applesoft with cash in hand and said I'll have a pound of apples. But you. Do this to us. To have enough be missing an angel on b.b.c. Radio Sheffield 21 minutes to 9 now what would be the story of your life Sheffield you charity element societies collecting some wonderful life stories of people living in South Yorkshire displaced migrants living history all stories of Sheffield's migrant communities uncovered and collected by a team of young people from diverse backgrounds he's a very short extract of one of those stories I was actually born in a beautiful continent called South America and the country in South America is called Ghana land of many waters it was a big house built on stilts concrete still. When did she migrate to the u.k. And of those she 18 years old I came to the u.k. As a student in world in college I did my 1st diploma in statistics economics and business accounting but I work 2 part time job. And study full time during the day to forgive my mom. Before we finish the interview you only live once have fun enjoy your life but at the same time make the best of opportunities. For sharing your story Mr. Interview has now come to an end thank you thank you very much that was a Livia Jane's from Guyana being interviewed by her daughter Sarah and Sarah joins me a narrow What was that like interviewing you mom and it was quite interesting because a lot of aspects of her childhood I wasn't aware of you know growing up as a child you kind of a bit selfish Enlai think the world revolves around you base kind of nice to just sit down and her head how has story and everything that she's been through up to this date. And yeah I learned a lot more about her and it did bring us closer What things did you perhaps she hadn't you hadn't known before she'd sort of just dusted a brush to brush gave the edges but you didn't know the date and I think. Migration story like coming to actual coming from Guyana to England I wasn't aware of that kind of aspect of life she was explained to us that she couldn't get direct flights and stuff like that. Which I wasn't fully aware of because I think I'm so used to traveling now that that was never something that I think would be like kind of like a hardship than Also she used like talking about story about how back home she wouldn't really like lock her house because you know someone's always in the house but when she came here she'd get locked out loads because you know the light leave the key in the house or leave the key in the door and so I just think Little things like that it's just so interesting how you know life is a bit different in another country than when you migraine and how you have to readjust in build yourself up from scratch and also actually hearing about your mom as a. The person who existed before you did actually is a thing yeah because I think you just think if. I was it's very eye opening I think a lot of things although. My great stories that very different. I could relate to and I understood where she was coming from even with the culture because I did live in Ghana for a period of time so it was nice to know there although it's different periods of time like the culture and the traditions are still the same and still being kept intact that's why I'm going to bring in those McCarthy from Element society the great behind the project why what was the thinking behind this project sounds fantastic Yeah well element society as you've charity they've got a lot of young people from different backgrounds coming through dual heritage from different countries of people who were newly arrived as well and it was a young people themselves maybe 2 years ago who expressed that well if if if this our culture isn't written down if it's not recorded then it will get lost and so the idea is that we've collected 13 star resolver about 6 month period and they will eventually be starred at the Sheffield archives and all the stories all the interviews are they all sort of a daughter and a mother they all relations who are in the interview not all of them a couple of them. But it's just a range of mean some people some young people who perhaps wouldn't ordinarily have come across someone who might be someone with refugee status or asylum seekers status for example so there's a Rangers or and that's interesting because obviously as an interviewer you go into interviewing someone with your own survive days and obvious if it's your mom that's different you've got a bit of a god they have knowledge of prior knowledge so you sort of know where where the questions might lead you if you've never met the person before. And if you are from a completely different culture and background you're going to get a different interview in that sounds really interesting that you know listening back to those interviews do you hear that I definitely do and it's been really nice watching the young people's sort of I call it like maybe an arc of learning or something just watching that confidence grow because we did have 2 days of training at the beginning and we tried to get as much practice in as possible befall the actual real thing but it's nice to see them growing confidence and take ownership actually and I think they've a lot of care in tentative to they've taken to to you know hold space for that person's well and the stories that you've uncovered they must be some of them must be fascinating Are there any ones that stick in your mind I think they're all special in their own where they've all got little nuggets and treasures in them we had one particular young person who had newly arrived from Sudan he actually only stayed with his fur about one and a half weeks called Khalid until he then moved on to another city. In that time we were able to get him an interview and also he told his own story as well so really you know he he's probably one mind I don't know what's next for adamant society then is this the beginning of something when it comes to these kind of oral histories Yes So this was a pilot project called displaced migrants living history a whole ping to do. Hopefully continue the project but we'll might be focusing on food heritage stories we're looking for for people who you know are happy to take what is of a well you know we love food on this program so yeah you are listening anything or I'd like to tell my story and I've got something interesting to say about that give us a call it will pass on your details are 80214949 just for a family Sarah in terms of your relationship with your mom now do you see her as a person in their own right rather than just email I think. When it's nice to see that you know I can see her as a different path and by feel like it's made me more admire her and like her strength and courage because I think a lot of people don't realize I think everyone's so quick to you know point fingers at refugees and migrants but you have to realize that they're taking themselves out of their comfort zone and coming to another country where they don't have family they don't have that kind of support system and them building a life from scratch all over again which is what she was doing with her family. Which I think is a beautiful thing because I think even in the space I'm in now she came to England when she was 1819 I don't think I could do that by myself so it sounds like you've learned a lot yeah really really really Project thank you so much as McCall's me from Element society and Sara are brilliant really really lovely stuff. Skin the Arab. The list goes a Radio Shack feel so so mad today's Small Business Saturday is a national campaign to get us using our independent small local a trade as one small shopping district have taken matters into their own hands to get people through the door they have the Christmas period business his own chair in Sheffield have been saving up profits from that quarter. And this year they finally had enough to add a bit of festive sparkle to the way they spent thousands on Christmas lights and they had a purpose which for the 1st time last summer and it has been a true tale of community spirit friendship and even a poli cast was involved as I learned when I met to the main organizes and heater in my case in the street right I'm sure about the other day and a turn I've been friends for some time and he too was very hot on the committee and I had a very poorly post earlier in the year and I needed some help to get hospitals in operations and so on. And I need to refuse to take money off made to pay for petrol and so on you know so I kept saying to let me push. She wouldn't allow my so this is a pro and then come June she went below market there was something you may be able to do and I went yeah just name it she went you know nothing the 2 about life so when she went well the committee with got some money in the bank and we want you know the line to lust we want to make it. What she thing and then there had been a suggestion of some eco solar powered lights come on in December on and off I said Ok however the same day I met with someone fantastic from high and found out what we could couldn't do next thing waves. Thousands of pounds worth the motifs the businesses local businesses even though it's been really you know trying to make ends meet. We've raised far 1000 pounds sponsership plus Yeah and then after me 2 months would solve the lights we went but Tony says God and we were quite stressed so we had a cup of tea or something similar and fabulous. Fabulous and very fiery event coordinates. What we're doing about a switch and I remember thinking your job remember. You are geo feed me so you know the school room full of the kids got to switch on the some amazing chairs and the point I want to make comes from something from nothing well let's break let's bring in need to read that we know do we know the Christmas lights that cost a lot of money that is why let's be frank a city center in towns and cities starts to look a bit rough and show you the last v.b.a. Is that they have lacked a certain amount of lost it's all got a bit depressing how did you feel all these beautiful lights we have saved for the last May be is because we have run the market share of their market for that length of time bit longer and say we make an small profit each month markets and this is being sitting there in the bank we couldn't decide how to spend it and we've come up with the idea of putting out a veil road and any and it makes a difference I've seen the fight I mean obviously it's not the best time of day to see the well they are on now but the photos from the light switch on absolutely what was it like that's right seeing them it was lovely Yes lovely seeing them go on and the children were very excited and. Yes absolutely safe now. We bring in Abbi from Sebastian's say one of the Independent Businesses on Sheriff l. Right it's face renowned for the small into the business is what. Difference does it make having the place of time I think for as it makes a massive difference because we're obviously competing with town and we're competing with places like Meadowhall where people automatically go at Christmas time and we really need to encourage people to shop locally as it makes such a big difference and its share of ale is what it is because it's got an amazing community and we wouldn't have a community if we as businesses could have run because there wouldn't be those kind of hopes of where you know that the mums me all after school and come in for a coffee and a scone and that's a real sense of belonging to an area without the businesses being there and there's not a day that this is not flow an area and people might think well the businesses must provides of extra cash and it must be quite easy to trade even if you are small independent is it like no you know at home I think we often get people come into the cafe and they say Oh it's lovely in here you know we've always dreamed of opening a cafe and you know if you know I think you'd be a great job and I think people just think that they see busy businesses but they don't realise that things like round here the overheads are Norma's So the rents and things a massive and literally every clip of tape that we sell makes a difference and we appreciate it so much and I think as a community of local shopkeepers literally every customer matters and I think something like a light switch on makes such a difference because the reason for people to come that was at the Higgins and he said. In telling me about the sheriff Christmas lights they really do look very lovely indeed and if you want to see them perhaps head down to share it tomorrow between 12 and 4. This is true among the good they go on needs to. Us. I don't need love cause I'm just. Never seem to go to. I don't want to talk to you call me. Oh.
