B.b.c. Radio. 1 o'clock on b.b.c. Radio shuffle a really good afternoon I had 2 brothers we're talking about brothers and sisters of what we think of one the program today. And if you tell me about yourself. Yes good afternoon Roni President Trump will arrive in the u.k. Vis afternoon at the start of a 2 day official visit he's traveling from the NATO summit in Brussels where he insisted that tremendous progress had been made with allies pledging to increase their spending on defense Mr Trump will be in London this afternoon ahead of meetings outside the capital with the queen and tourism a tomorrow tens of thousands of people are expected to join protests against his visit but Mr Trump insisted he wasn't where it was sure they'll be protests because there are always protests but I believe that the people in the u.k. Scotland Ireland as you know I have property in Ireland property all over I think that those people they like me a lot officers from South Yorkshire of being drafted in to help police the protests the labor m.p. For Sheffield central Paul Bloomfield told the Commons he supports the demonstrations but he also said the police stretched twice with the South Yorkshire police leadership over the last fortnight on both occasions. Yes they've expressed concern about the impact of deploying 160 officers when there is also have been reduced so far isn't the real problem here that this government and its immediate predecessor had brought down policing understood virtually unsustainable levels to manage been injured after a gun was fired in Sheffield Police say the 24 year olds are in a serious but stable condition in hospital after the shooting in the Broome hall area of the city at about 20 past one this morning it happened in head for the grove officers are still at the scene anyone with information is asked to call Want to one of the former South Yorkshire Police worker is facing jail after she admitted stealing more than 2 175000 pounds from the force and her mother 48 year old Jacqueline Fletcher was employed as a property store team leader at Attica of police station Sheffield Crown Court heard the offenses took place between November 2011 and July 26th that you're from boundary walking Rodham will be sentenced next month a British driver who helped to rescue 12 boys in their football coach from a flooded cave in Thailand has played down his aerobics John Bolton fan who was one of the 1st to reach the group who was stuck there for more than 2 weeks he arrived into Heathrow Airport this morning and told reporters that the operation was a success because of teamwork it was the result of an international team of military and civilian divers working alongside but I know very Everybody pulled together and the results so. We have a story happening of the oil is not an ounce. And it's life. Could have mean just talking and or live blasted. In an all time low there was a tunnel for tree campaigners of reach then out of court settlement with Sheffield Council over an injunction the council had wanted to bring in to prevent protests hampering tree felling the council had been applying to extend the current injunction to 2021 and wanted to include strip to terms more than a dozen campaigners written to by the council asking them to sign the injunction or face being taken to court for costs the court hearing looking at the terms of the injunction is taking place well now was not to be for England as they lost to want to creation after extra time to miss out on reaching their World Cup final since 1906 but what now for Gareth Southgate's side the former England player Trevor Brooking is excited for what lies ahead there are lots of little things that we've got to learn but lots of progress and lots of opportunities there you know I think we'll be in contention. For the next few cycles so that's progress to sure. Or more than 26000000 people watched him get knocked out of the World Cup these fans who watched the game in Moscow said they had mixed feelings after the loss. With a position where we were gutted about. It bittersweet really I'm so pleased we got there just for the last showing but. You know without that. Follows from cricket news the one day internationals got underway at Trent Bridge England are batting currently and they are 48 for the wicket we have it's just gone 5 minutes past. The 5 day weather forecast on b.b.c. Radio Sheffield a cloudy afternoon across South Yorkshire and some breaks in the clouds develop and since then he spells should come through during the afternoon but we could see a couple of quite heavy isolated shower with it up temperatures today 24 Celsius and Fahrenheit that overnight clear spells initially but a bit more cloud will build as we head through the 2nd part of the night and we could still see the isolated showers with a few degrees tomorrow a very similar sort of forecast a quiet cloudy start developing a chance for a few heavy showers but then a mostly dry weekend based off today and a dry warm if not very warm and that's more weather online at b.b.c. Look at you Kate. Roni Robinson on b.b.c. Radio Sheffield good today we're talking about sibling rivalry which is a thing between brothers or sisters. Or brothers and brothers in a family. Those 3 sisters. Bad brother. Williams Of course he said in David Miliband we're talking about brothers and sisters I'll tell you about my really well actually if you tell me about your usual numbers of blood you can ring together if we don't get you sister during the year or ever I want to. Force. This is no good. Everyone. If he gets better as you get older Tell me about your brother or sister or brother those systems to trip you on $4949.00 b.b.c. Radio show you we're talking about that today Steve White was telling us how he is the oldest and the best in his family you've got 3 brothers and 2 sisters I didn't know that until today would you tell me please about your sibling your brother and sister if you're in 0800 chip or $14949.00 tax 1323 and all the rest the theme of today's program comes as a consequence of a show by huge which want to play a. Show coming up will premiering the books to infringe a place called war on terror he's described as a one man dark comedy stage show about brotherly rivalry and depression and Christmas songs so I think we'll talk about the brotherly rivalry Hugh thank you you've got to build the use of him yeah I do yeah I've got an older brother a few years older than me do you want to say something about your sibling rivalry with him yeah I mean we quite classic age 2 years so you know growing up at a small child you always kind of you look up to your older brother but. You're never quite. Probably quite classic you know brother relationship really that we had in many ways a bit rough housing and a kind of undermining of each other. Yeah could well you're 33 now so you've grown apart in that so your brothers obviously coming to see your plays me well yeah I mean it's the premiere it's weekend so it's quite possible to Kate's a bit of a look but it's we don't always communicate exactly very well so I don't know it's he hasn't told me explicitly he will come to a show or he won't come to the show it's a big question mark like if they read it then all we say what they're going to do what I think. It is a bit of a mystery here who does he know you killed him. Yes yes. He doesn't I don't know if he does that Juliet said in the play the play is about Terry who's older brother has died and my brother isn't isn't dead he's been very much alive is a fictional story but there is very much truth drawn from my own experiences you know family relationships and especially with my brother a within that. Yeah I mean I know he knows about the show because my parents are coming but again it's one of those things it's hard to say I think one of the things that brothers really struggle with and probably men in general is talking about their feelings really. You know you know you grow up kind of being wary of exposing how you really feel a little bit which in some ways it can kind of help you grow to be quite tough in some ways but also it means that you're quite exposed and you can feel quite lonely when something bad does happen. I don't know I think as we grow up you know the relationship changes in many ways I think with my siblings and sisters as well but we still never really get too far away from the original relationship I think some of the old memories still cling a little bit in terms of like you know childhood traumas and stuff and bullying and all about it just these heavy stuff is new in the playwright you'll carry it to kind of becomes what he becomes old really spur of the that's right place on his on Terry's on the day where he becomes older than his older brother and so a lot of the stories talking about how he looked up to his brother and how he felt his father cheated his brother differently to him and it's about him trying to come to terms with the fact that he is now kind of you know he's his own man and he can't always be comparing himself to his brother. They had this sense of kind of regret over things he could have said on the play that she in the charity called the Campaign Against living miserably com which are charities who kind of try and raise awareness about. Suicide which is 75 percent of all u.k. Suicides she may owe so that. Issues about anon communication about feelings in my plays a comedy is a funny show it was a side of like truth of exploring family trauma and brotherly rivalry and stuff like that from like small stuff to more big issues where people kind of failed to communicate properly but like I say it's a comedy so it's an enjoyable evening how it reflects upon the kind of the family stuff was you'd call the war on terror. So the main types is called Terry and really did I start to write the show from the title I just because obviously it's quite a common phrase the war on terror. I don't know it just it was kind of a play on words and it just kind of drew me into the idea of looking at the whole world again so it's about this kind of coming to terms with his his sadness and starting to talk to people about that and starting to. Communicate a bit better with everyone so this idea of stepping out of this feeling of of you know imagine the whole world against you that's what was the initial spark for the place of the title was kind of a joke almost initially but then it became the theme of the play as I developed over time any advice for those brothers and sisters about getting on better with our brothers and sisters. Today on the program Yeah well I mean something that's happened to me quite recently that being I've been going through a bit of time in my wife some kind of with issues to do with our 1st baby and my when my brother found out he he gave me a text and I and it was a really thoughtful text and it's it was kind of shocked me a little bit how it didn't seem like him talking and I think sometimes we can we can talk about how technology creates like separation between people and how it is being I think actually even if you just communicate with someone through Facebook or through text or whatever is is better than nothing and sometimes people can find it easier to talk in that way than face to face. Yeah but it can you know I think that was really an eye opening moment for me of seeing that my but it did carry. It still good to kind of stay it just didn't text it made me kind of feel like a bit more of a grown up connection with him I think that's fantastic you your play the war on terror is from the 15th to the 17th on the ground at the clubhouse in the 1st one the French 1st book what about well I've had to put a sibling rather with my brothers all I can say from that and also from what I've researched this morning is that it gets better the older you get I think have to 60 or become pals again so good news here in the long run I'm looking forward. Take And thanks for joining is given as a theme for the day not everybody just get along but only contain it in a day. When. I can Tina Turner can you remember when you 1st heard that wow what a song we're talking about siblings today brothers and sisters on the program and I'd like your thoughts as well released because of a new production by the playwright models with a few moments ago been extraordinary talking about brothers and brother a little rivalry I don't hear about your relationship with your brother or yes sister or indeed if you talk to a parent the way in which your brothers and your sons and daughters and people get on with each other was she like if your brother and sister compete with you in the same sport to what Harry and Brad Rickerby do in their local jet ski stuff from Doncaster they both won a number of either British or international titles while I caught up with them both a bit earlier this morning and I asked Brad 1st Who's the old out of the 2 of him. Oh yeah so what's it like being the younger one Harry Yeah. But I've. Got mark. Great he's got and someone that. I mean what's he like being I don't know the older one little brother kind of poking at him taking all the attention and things you jealous of him. You know he's pushing your buttons so yeah yeah. Yeah leave very honest and it's really important thank you very much for that because we're talking on the program today about sibling rivalry McCann of swapping stories about what it's like to have brothers and. Sisters know how it affects our lives so it's really good of you to come on and talk about it kind of just go back into the sort of earliest originally. Who was 1st into it into Jet Ski I was. Also. 10 years ago now. Starting. Over in the new. And after a few years moved up into York and then straight finals in our zone right. Then Harry. I was just a point cos star I would have probably done a 10. So in the fall season though I started 2015 so start a later age and later on t.v. Resent teacher told me to get the sense he thought he knows how this is what I do. You know. I've always loved watching him when he went to saw it much. Probably knew how to mount the me when it counts were not really an ism I've been quite successful in what we love doing yeah I'm going to keep poking at this because I would've thought the one of you would think like Arc shouldn't a minister should have been a famous poet as I'm thinking Margaret my younger brother's going to catch me up and he's still going to be younger than me when I retire and he's my brother is an honor that true there's no there's no negative to being of it's just a feeling cause for each of the course of us that we want from each other to be successful as well as a little believe a word of it do you train together. Brad you are still obviously I'm. American jumping ship now so literally I'm over that. And I've actually moved into a new Jordan tracing now where how does on the the coast cost race to so is a little bit different. Something new like building the same thing so it's quite hard to train together novel. Training. Or about how anyone about the whole business of whether he's better than you. And they will find. You can we say you better listen are you doing different things or is it possible have you ever have a compete against each of us a question I suppose you know enough to come to each of the books if you will pay more titles is a lot more experience and miso in paper it's a broad book split. Really broader You betcha. It's hard to say because if I raced across. The floor going to. One day I would you know I'm so it looked right. Again. Not want to spy. Who will be one Brad and will be 2 Well I don't know ringgits but we'll do Harry who's going to be one of those going to be too. Hairy who's a better looking of the. Self do you think it is Harry. Browne who's better looking. Would you like to say why what you've got that Harry's Nagar apart from maturity of man around the rest. Just bit short of age he has got better with age what about when you going about other things I mean this is not much of a gap between you 2 so you must've been competing I don't know how do we lose more love by a parent or a. Street. On a regular. One of his favorite definitely he has always said that parents probably do is the railway the old one the 1st. Genuinely do not know. One and they cannot. Carry your parents with you more than Brad the little one who was look after the little one now. The. Hardest. Brings up. You know can't thank them enough. You're a good lad they love you more than the bride we need to tell me about your kind of how to put the she love life who has the most successful one Herrick. Well. So often. Here. When I'm sure because I'm looking for a sibling rivalry if anyone asked me about me or my brothers I could turn your thoughts jealous and fallen on and what I felt about them were you to hide it very well I reckon who's made the most who's made the most money Brad in jet ski race and it's very hard to make money. If you ask. It was for the most money at Publix a meet. You know if it's if you asked the same question if you yeah been doing it longer than me yeah it would be quite easy to say same question you know very. Well they are in Brad talking about being brothers and hiding very well the sort of sibling rivalry which may well they may not have but we've been hearing quite a lot about siblings who are rivalrous not on the program today your brother or your sister do you get on your right to get on with each other there's a famous brother of a famous brother who works at b.b.c. Radio Sheffield he's a very good looking disc jockey and he's got his own hand and in recent years he's just 10 stone in weight he's got a famous producer used to play football for some local team. Join me with 3. 1974 couldn't go for. Classic music. With challenge people putting. Very good. P.c. You feel. Is a brother and we're talking about the brothers and siblings and all the rest of it on the program today I'd like to hear from you please about your brother or sister and whether you are simply in rivalry. This is b.b.c. Radio Sheffield. You know the numbers. News for self-heal and. You got a little sister I do yes I got a little sister cause she had all she there not just saw. Radio thank you very much indeed we're doing siblings brothers and sisters and their rivalry I'm told you have lots of them well however I'm the oldest of 5 so that's 3 brothers and one month sister. Is 5 is to get on what we can find I don't believe everyone should know by now do you say you know 5 Yeah you say you are you just making sure you're listening that yes I'm getting on fine now because back in the back in the olden days there were. 7 of us in the House office including mom and dad and just one bathroom with the loo in the bathroom it was a constant struggle to go to the loo so I was determined that when I grew up with have a looming. Now there's me my better half of my son still living with us and we have a Louis we've got on 3 floors of it what we call a townhouse. And so we can all go together. About imaginary ready to manage with a good we all use the same little box at the back I'm very unpleasant I try I try to go to Lucian for. Such b.b.c. Radio call 800. Feel. Free to. Say this is what we're talking about today but a message from Steve also to say I've got 2 brothers and 2 sisters but both my sisters have 3 brothers and I don't think this is plan. Right Karen Karen and others calling to say she thinks she has she has 3 sisters and it was brilliant We always had a quibble but we love each other a lot Karen thank you your brothers and sisters sibling rivalries or not in a moment I'm going to talk to Paul Rolaids great friend of Radio Sheffield he knows something about the rivalry between 2 brothers one of whom became very important in Doncaster might well become prime minister the other one had nothing to do with don't cast I think he thought he might become prime minister to something happened between them 8 years ago which cause some trouble between him once called David ones. I'll tell you after comes God. If you're not missing this $121.00 minister to today the program is devoted to brothers and sisters Nass King ourselves well what it's like good to get on whether or not to get on with our brother or our sister what they call sibling rivalry programs devoted to we've heard the skiing brothers with what we've heard all sorts of things about it and I suppose we now turn to the question of the 2 famous of those who famously quarreled b.b.c. Radio Sheffield one of the politicians one of the person was a politician called David Hill the one is called that and we're talking of course about David and Ed Miliband Paul Rowley political correspondent in Westminster Paul always a pleasure easy truth that the Miliband have appeared on the radio and I'm about to say they can appear on this one by ringing in if they want to that's always the option on your show as you know Roni but apparently the old Miliband the one who lost the job as Labor leader in 2010 David Miliband was fun by Ed Miliband in his new role and of course he's muscling in our tariff because you might know he's been standing in he's been called back in. Because he did it rather successfully supposedly on Radio 2 so I think it's a couple of weeks ago he phoned his brother David who now works for international rescue which I always thought was something to do with fund the. Best in New York but oddly talking about Thunderbird David when he used to work before as an m.p. Worked for Tony Blair because he was a bright lad he was known as brains and if I remember brains was also in. I think the problem with that rivalry nice to talk to both of them and every time I asked them about it they just you could tell they hated being in they knew the question was coming but they felt they had a pat answer to it the problem for David is Ed's 2 and a bit years younger than he is and that is always the problem but clearly it does create tension I know that Ed was David's best man at his wedding but when Ed got married remember he got married when he was the leader David wasn't the best man and there was a thought then that maybe you do have that kind of tension he must prey on you if your younger brother supposedly gets the top gig although these days it was better being in charge of international rescue rescue or occasionally being a presenter on radio to me would probably kill fairly well I'd say well if I were on air at the moment Paul I'd gone to say the Ed Miliband would never come on air with me in the old time he was important around here we asked him but he's got the chance if he wants to and he can certainly appear Will you tell me about their rivalry because it seems what we're taught 2010 up with the leadership and David the older brother got thrashed just the problem with politics is that if you ever say somebody is the favorite never happens John Major was not the favorite every thought Michael Heseltine was going to be the successor to Margaret Thatcher it didn't happen and most people thought the Delhi Sealy at one stage was going to be prime minister he lost out as well as a labor leader and that's often the way you know I mean who would have thought that Jeremy Corbyn could have been Labor leader will I actually did it but most of the people didn't. Donald Trump who's actually in Britain this afternoon listening to this program I'm sure will be listening to this program I don't know if he's got any younger or older siblings but that kind of tension clearly goes on but it's interesting isn't it I mean I suppose it's the old Cain and Abel thing Romulus and Remus You know Mike and Bernie winters Paul and Barry Ryan or even the more important Paul and Barry local lads from Rotheram Paul and Barry that chuckle rather you but they seem to get on alright don't do you know you meet. Suing him for but I'm not sure I am lucky I mean I I don't have any brothers so maybe there was never any rivalry in my family but it's interesting and they always say the one who misses out is the is that one in the middle so I don't know where you stand I'm in the middle thank you very. Well the older one gets the attention of the 1st and the baby gets the attention and your the one in the middle thinking that what's happened to me so what's the moral that we draw from the Miliband of the school and we will laugh in an address their life and if they can appear on the radio together but there was a period when they didn't even appear to be talking to each other or indeed to have kept any of their relationships going to tour on the bitterly talked about being constantly compared to his brother and talked about it being horrid is they were nothing to each other were they Yeah I mean to be honest with you I'm still the wives of the 2 no longer speak to one another but whether or not as changed after the break through in the last couple of weeks on Radio 2 I'm not entirely sure I know they used to regularly go to Sunday lunches with the family and Christmas get togethers that seem to stop as well I suppose it's always a problem if you're the younger one the same thing happens if you're not brothers but you're very close to Tony Blair and Gordon Brown Gordon Brown was the more experienced everybody thought the Gordon Brown was going to be a labor leader it was ultimately became the prime minister but some time 10 years after Tony Blair and he never really lost that one I mean there was that kind of close rivalry shared an office together also I know the 2 there anyway. One set of twins in the Commons the Eagle says oh yeah but they get on very well because every time I see Angela I also see Maria now I actually became an m.p. Before. She is older only older by a by an hour 20 minutes because they were clearly twins but they are very closely any rate you know that the difference is their hair styles which I think they had to change over the years but they were really were inseparable in their younger days of cinema theatre I've seen them out shopping and it's that was a very close bond but usually yes until it became an m.p. 1st they were also in the cabinet they weren't in the cabinet in the shadow cabinet and they were it as Labor ministers at the same time so when your sisters are competing one of the I suppose it is healthy but sometimes if you see if the younger one does better and I think of the the Williams sisters as well Venus and. Serena Williams Serena Williams I think is now ahead in terms of the number of single championships he's won it's something like 7 fire the last time I looked so I suppose it's difficult and he can never win but the hardest bit are supposed to be the mother isn't it to be the mother of the the pair mothers have to start with one another or do they treat them equally and that's the great task I suppose and final question Paul wrote an only child only children tend to be selfish miserable self-important and so forth you think that's true I hope not to be honest with you I'm from the other side of the pen I've been weakened and I was brought up in a very big Irish Catholic family so I had lots of cousins 54 the last cut my mum was the young my mum was the youngest of 10 and my dad was the youngest of 10 so I never never lost out in that respect but I think what it did give me is a kind of determination because at the age of 7 my dad showed me were Radio Luxembourg war and since the age of 17 I've been on the wireless and I've been on the wireless dare I say for more than 40 years now so maybe being an only child just certain you know an hour ago and. Out of selfishness but certainly determination to but not because I've got nobody to compete again. Thank you so much we learned some stuff today is b.b.c. Radio Sheffield he's got no brothers or sisters but a family that could be an audience for local radio station in their own right I'm asking you please to share with me your sibling rivalry or otherwise what your tell me about your brother or your sister how you get on. Tell me if they'd like 7 ballet one person my one 1st minute. You know that I was. 4949 takes a long stay there was a chef to tweet me out of the 7. Sisters siblings push your story. It's. A game. Our area. Are Good luck. Ok. Illegibly. 11. 11 . 11. B.b.c. Radio Sheffield we've done. Single program today we're talking about sibling quarrels brothers sisters rivalries in the family but what is it like if you're a parent of 2 Winter Olympians and all the competition comes with that a little earlier on today I spoke to Richard 2 daughters Winter Olympians Molly and Katie so much they got into skiing and kind of run about where the scale age and deploy group together and they probably found out and discovered that love us together so obviously it's been a shared shared shared enjoyment what they've been doing for almost a rival show. And they sent them all out their rivals I think out what they. Think of. Before even even to the extent of shotgunning the front seat in the car. The last piece of cake or whatever so I think that's daughters and because the are quite close in. Kind of. Everything that's what they once got to say so in a sporting sense. Yes wrongly but then again to. Help each other when you've been away competition on the mountain except for 2 daughters want shotgunning the front seat just just getting the front seat. On the shot shotgun whatever it can be in the end so they've got. Anything shot. Except for it's. Very competitive in that way. Siblings come with me then you. Can be falling out one many I know when you've been away from some people thank goodness they've got back on they've left us because they can get on each other's. Proximity But but then on the other hand it's nice when. They're to see every church there and support each other especially going still an earlier this year. It was a shared thing and they were both there to help each other so it was so much respect it's good then the other respect. What about the kind of temperament are they different good older children and I speak as a 2nd child older children often of the ones who identify with their parents in a bit reaction in the morning and a bit nasty to the next one and the next one is a artistic and clever one is that what happens with Molly and Katie are no I don't . Think they can both roles that could be so tragic me look at women think it's lovely I was so proud about the hour with each other links but you can. Relate to me and again if she's taking. Siblings into this day they do that. Getting back to because only 6820 see now Molly was 21 earlier yeah in the so nice conditions home on emotion town. On all these today but she would back off to New Zealand again so it's I think it's times like that that can quickly missed each other but I think it is in use of them for probably 4 or 5 weeks so that's a difficult part because we don't sense a. Strange but we get on without that you know I mean. Face time except Jack and then types but then she seems to soon go out and she's gone because it would accept that's what Katie does a bit more when she comes you think really not to see it but then. Saying. Look your clock is going well when when you're going to. Notice. In the Guardian article about Molly and Katie Molly's coated with a smile saying about her sister she's always been better than me and I've known it but we still try to outdo each other the smaller the modest one is Molly the quiet one is. The quiet one of the. Molly the Rick and. You certainly know I'm always around her. And I think Molly's court deciding that she does understand.
