Placing general a charm monster with John Bolton as U.S. Head of national security Mr Trump took another seat at Cabinet table and tipped to top out went to head a Veterans Affairs David SOCAN and then comes the president's White House physician freeride mold ought to run a Jackson to be fair Dr Show can see have been rocking for a while says he was found to have done a bit of skydiving on an official trip to Britain and Denmark which included taking a freebie to Wimbledon with his wife Dr Shaw can push through a reform of the much criticized as follows a more radical plan. Police say the surrogate script polities Russians poison and Solsbury 1st came into contact with a nerve agent over chalk on the front door the highest concentration of the agent was tried on the door knob they remain in critical condition in the hospital our reporter Ben under says this is an interesting development Well I think it's very important to learn where the. Ghostscript Alaniz daughter 1st came into contact with this nerve agent that of course later on led to them becoming very unwell on the park bench and then being taken to hospital which is where they are now of course in critical condition and condition is still critical and I think in terms of the police releasing this information always they are and this is a hugely complex investigation it's one that 250 officers are working on pretty much around the clock huge amounts of evidence to trawl through why they release this information well I think that's because they know the people in Saul's we will see that they're starting not to focus their attention so much on the city center on the park bench on the pub in the restaurant that the script Miles would have been in but very much around his house and one of the reasons is I think they want to reassure people that although they found this highest concentration of the nerve agent on the front door of that house on the outskirts of Soulsby they're saying that the risk remains low to other people in that immediate neighborhood when you look at the horrific impact this is had. By stripping down his daughter we interviewed his niece who said that she believed that they would be incapacitated in some way for the rest of their lives and that she understood them to be very very seriously unwell indeed and indeed the police officer who went to their aid who had to be taken to hospital though happily now has been discharged from hospital you can totally understand why people insult people being very concerned so I think is a message of reassurance here because also it's still unclear exactly how that nerve agent came to be their wallets rootin was this is have huge consequences diplomatically of course with new. Humorous Russian diplomats being sent being expelled from more than 20 countries and I know a huge war of words hunting up but at the core of the investigation remains around so you guys script those House and I think we are still waiting to hear exactly what the mechanism was for this pointing. Well the foreign secretary says that the attack on the script palls has led to a global wave of revulsion against Russia Mr Johnson was speaking at an event in London. These expulsions for as it related with the. Chris Lawrence win here is the next issue and prosecution. Connected nations to Britain and witness across 3 continents countries to say enough is enough. And talking about the number of countries who have no expelled diplomats he said that Moscow has underestimated the international response to the poisoning. The both are still hot and sincere as the chair of arms chemical weapons in a place. If they please never give a shit about the suffering. Of your screen. Or that we will be indifferent to the reticence to choose to speak to the public see that's all you know I see that. It was. The times already be sitting in my car safe from the risk of us and so fearful of Russia those people would know the risk on. This. Is that. Our stance in the foreign secretary. President Trump has sent a tweet that he is keen to meet Kim Jong un after being told that the North Korean leader's trip to China went very well talks are set for May but Mr Trump said sanctions them pressure on North Korea would continue until then at least Mr Trump said the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is a possibility meanwhile North Korea has agreed to meet a delegation from South Korea for high level talks in the final week of April we can talk with B.B.C.'s correspondent and Solara bicker Hello Laura hello how are you. Good to hear you know this is a South Korean move. When exactly are they going to meet the. The North Koreans in a meeting that we know much about Well listen let's just take us all back because here in South Korea they've been working on diplomacy with the North since January since Kim Jong un came out and his New Year's speech and they saw the opportunity here to brain Kim Jong Il into the global arena to help them take part in North Korea to take part in the Pyong Chang Winter Olympics so they've been quietly work really working away they have been numerous meetings between North and says today's high level talks will take part the demilitarized zone this heavily fortified border between the 2 countries from member North and South Korea are technically still at war and after the Korean War because new peace treaty has ever been signed so those talks will take place there today it will set the date and the agenda for the 1st summit between the 2 leaders and that will take place at the end of April so President mean I'm Kim Jong in are set to meet but that is the preliminary meeting before what we now believe may be the bigger summit between President Trump and Kim Jong and there are fewer details on that we still have no clear as to when that might happen but right now we do know that the leaders. North and South Korea are preparing to meet and I think today will probably go according to the Blue House which is the version of the presidential palace here according to a spokesman for the Blue House they've said that we do expect to hear a date an agenda from the talks today. And is this this as you said this is a twin truckers really had nothing to do with the norm the secret meeting that went on in Beijing between Kim Jong un and she's in pink Well in some ways it has everything to do with that because if Kim Jong un is about to step onto the global stage if he's pivoting his strategy to be you know this kind of part of the global community after being part of this kingdom which no one really knows exactly what's going on inside it's not been part of the international community and built up and you clear Arsenal having built up his nuclear arsenal he's now looking to perhaps either use that as a tool as a bargaining tool to take part in the global arena but he still needs a close ally at his side and to do that he's gone back to China after shunning China for years I mean last year an envoy was sent to Pyongyang and he was turned away so they've shown China especially since China at took part in the international sanctions but know that that kind of friendship is back call so when he steps onto the stage when he steps with has these discussions with both President men here in South Korea and perhaps President Trump he has a strong ally and his corner and remember North Korea and China want the same thing they want U.S. Influence U.S. Troops U.S. Weapons off of this peninsula and if you are looking as to any kind of bargaining chip and he kind of tool that he may want to kind of deploy if he's being asked to give up his nuclear weapons that maybe it. Isn't it change isn't it from the last time that Korea North Korea that has was involved in international diplomacy because then you had 6 party talks and no you got a series of of what diplomats would call bilateral you know between Kim and Mr Moon between Kim and maybe President Trump between Even Kim and Prime Minister Abi of Japan. The North Korean strategy seems very similar to the one deployed by Kim Jong un's father and back in CO 20062007 leading up to all these top of the 6 party talks and you're right before we had everybody involved Russia China Japan South Korea the United States and North Korea and there are now pro proposals to me in fact take place because it's clear that everybody's feeling a little bit left out Beijing didn't want to be left out and North Korea's kind of brought them into the fray which means any negotiations will also now have to go through China Japan and President abbé Prime Minister Abbott has already been saying that he feels that Japan has been left out in many of these discussions and he's been pushing the U.S. To get Japan's agenda on any summit agenda which the U.S. Of kind of pushed back so the idea of 6 party talks has been raised again here in size career right now I think the concentration is on President main meeting Kim Jong Il and to see exactly what Kim Jong un wants because this will be the 1st time President moon has met him face to face and it will be the 1st time because these meetings will take part in the South Korean part of the demilitarized zone it with the 1st time any North Korean leader has set foot on sales Korean solo I mean considering this potential is quite small he could drive from Seoul to Pyongyang in just a few hours that's going to be an incredible moment in itself so yes they're concentrating on these bilateral talks in a moment perhaps to leave the framework for 6 party talks in the future and that's certainly what they want here in South Korea. And what do the South Koreans make of the visit to Beijing by by Mr Kim a centrist and because this is Koreans here have lived with us kind of free sterile feel free still for 6070 years you know it's been part of their life they just kind of look at the releases headlines and then shove it aside but there was a lot of interest in that train heading to Beijing there was a lot of kind of who is it is it it is his sister Is it him who is it. And I think when it comes to visiting Beijing I think a lot of people are like wow I think we now you kind of like a bit clearer about what we're facing this is a traditional move by Kim Jong and it's something that many people here had been expecting the idea of him speaking to President moon and President Trump before he's spoken to his closest ally and biggest trade partner would just not be the right thing to do in kind of a society so in the eyes of the international community so I think people here in South Korea have half expected Kim Jong un to meet with his counterpart in Beijing but when it comes to their hopes there's a cautious optimism that I don't think many people have had before they're hoping that this time will be different but at the same time there's always this kind of feeling and when you speak to South Koreans like wow we'll see we'll see there's always that slight shrug of the show just because they just never know they've been here before they thought that things would be different before and they voted for a president in South Korea that actively promised that he would engage with the north and that's what he's doing but at the same time even though it seems things seem to be going very well they know that it can go very badly Very quickly we'll see Laura thank you very much. 3 senior Kenyan officials have been found guilty of contempt after they failed to obey a court order to release a detained opposition politician the latest So centers on opposition politician him a good name a guna who was charged with treason for his role in the Marc swearing in ceremony of the opposition leader Raul a danger well little bit of revisions clearly called for here ho who better than our man in Kenya Michael Cokie Hello Michael Good morning Lord morning so this marks swearing in ceremony it was all about it. OK let me just give you a little bit of background to all this now during the general elections held here in the country last year Mr Odinga ran for president against the incumbent who can Yetta Mr was announced as the winner of those elections but the country's supreme court said the election wasn't transparent and this prompted a rerun to be held a few months later in October Mr Odinga a boy courted the rerun Having said that it would be rigged in favor of President who are looking at or who was later declared winner of the elections a few months later Mr Odinga held an unofficial saying in ceremony here in Nairobi at a park in the city Now during that event which was attended by Mr guna Mr Gordon that declared himself what he termed as the people's president Mr Magoo no was a day later arrested and then the ported to Canada and this is after he was charged with treason related offenses and this followed that unofficial searching in event now government officials here had at the time said that Mr Mick Gooda did not hold Kenyan citizenship but only Canadian nationality However his lawyers at that time had said that his deportation had been in defiance of court orders that had been issued Mr Magoo no was then late detained a few days ago when he arrived back at the main airport here in Nairobi from Canada now what happened is that court then ordered Mr Me good not to be released and when this did not seem to take place the court held top officials in contempt of court for failing to obey these orders to release him now the court held in contempt the country's interior minister the head of police and head of Immigration . Now just to update you about what has apparently taken place. Earlier on this evening is that Mr ME GOING TO BE GOING TO was apparently again has been deported from from the country this is based on reports that have been received from his lawyers so if I understand you correctly Mr McCollum are going to should have been free to move about he shouldn't he shouldn't have been the port that according to the court yes the court had ordered Mr Me going to be released earlier on in the actually went ahead and held those top government officials in contempt when it was seen that he would not released Mr McQueen had spoken to the B.B.C. Radio on Wednesday and had indicated that he was being held in what he termed as toilet in the airport and he said that he was being held and a very difficult conditions. Like OK well Michael thank you very much indeed now here's a job how about taking some measurements. 6200 feet up. Howling gale which might be as high as well 231 miles an hour it could be just a job for you if you fancy it and it's unlovely upstate New England and it's at the very top of my Washington which has the highest trauma Miten east of the Mississippi it's a unique job and a unique location how can I sell any better us as the shift later up there on top of my Washington Adam go who's doing that job right now oh Hello Adam. Oh you're not good it's well good to hear you is it your job and their advertising I know it is not my job so I did work nights when I did what I 1st started up here about Washington but I don't see where that we currently have it is going to be replacing our other DNS server that is leaving so we have a position for at night time whether observer and urologist open up here I'm not Washington OK though we're all exposed so nights of 2 or so what's the shift. Shift is going to be from us 6 pm to 6 am here and during that shift you're going to be doing ah hourly weather observation which is that at the end of every hour which we actually still go outside and manually collect weather data using a slave's like ometer and also eyesight as well as you say boards to be able to determine what sort of precision is falling so and then also you'll be doing the forecast so we usually release forecasts at 5 pm at 5 am so I'll be doing the main forecast we have here so tell me what it's like because you know the conditions must be fairly Arctic in the middle of the winter. Don't like to bundle up a lot for a go outside to make sure that you have no exposed skin during several winter storms a lot of times Gerri very temperatures can be well below 0 Fahrenheit outside and if you have a 100 plus mile an hour winds you can be seeing those wind chills approaching $80.00 to $90.00 degree degrees Fahrenheit below 0 1 So 1 after me you get frostbite in as little as 30 seconds and you still go outside and collect that data manually so it's actually a lot of preparation before I go outside and I have to know where to be around the building where you can kind of shelter itself on the A full force of the wind so you're not exposed to the entirety of the elements at any given time outside. Why do you have to go outside couldn't you just leave the wind gauge on top of the building we do when it's one of the few instruments that we can actually collect from inside it's all the other weather elements we have to go outside to collect and fortunately up here we see a lot of ice formation across when we see those really high winds that are in the middle of a storm we can get ice accumulating on our insurance at $6.00 to $8.00 inches per hour so I was going to suck up to the top of the tower if a crowbar a knocking that I stop to try to make sure that the instruments are still reading properly so I sought to go outside even if we want to be inside so we're could actually appeal to somebody about this job here right now it sounds like extremely hard the stuff you know if you're a if you like Polar Expeditions you probably get on very well at the top of most Washington. That is actually at its mark or a winter Lubbers up here since we see at snow and ice for 9 months out of the year there are a lot of people out of very interested in extreme weather a lot of people who are severe weather and B.C.'s like to come up here like I am I I love to see you know we're a step mother nature as you are so it's really awesome being able to be out here and experience that is probably lots of other people that have similar interests as me that way and you are a job. Of any of your observer has ever been hurt. And surprisingly not too many years there has been a hurt doing the job we have had observers get hurt during shift changes were moving around heavy equipment and sometimes like a bad twist can lead to any injury or. Skiing in the off ways are doing some sort of people have been injured that way but not too many people have been injured up here on the summit doing their job and do you have company if you're if you're the night shift the sort of anybody to talk to. I'm from the beginning of the night yes but for the late part of that usually from about 9 pm to about 5 am. You're on your own but. If there is any sort of if there is a severe storm or whatnot then a lot of the times will stay on and the whole share Tri-State through the storm because if you go out to the tower every 20 minutes and I stop it's very exhausting and also when it's our 120 plus miles an hour it's pretty dangerous go outside by yourself so you go outside as teams usually if that's the case out I saw nights there by itself but if it's a city or a night then typically you'll have one or 2 other people helping out if you go to Europe to go or we do not. So with high winds lot of the times it's easier if you start getting blown away by the winds actually to lay down flat on the ground and call that to the building so using ropes they whip around and we tried it in the past and a result and a lot more injuries than when we didn't use ropes so I fortunately got rid of rote sand it's just safer to go outside without wrote sad if you fall out are get knocked down by the wind lay down flat arm and crawl to safety. And what do you do for food the Amazon delivered to the top of most Washington Mel we do so as we were a week on we got a schedule so every 8 days we say 8 days and then 6 days down and one of us fighting for a cup we'll go out and do the food shopping we'll get a bunch of fresh produce and some fresh fruit and opening up for our shift up here so I asked why do you prefer to bring it on a weekly basis of course there's a road on the train up most Washington as well isn't there so you know of any image of you having the slaw Gallup poll 6000 feet with the stuff on your by. Now he said be estatic given that back in the day they set it during the winter period hike up the road and carry a sled behind them but now it got snow capped the winter time I would like to do you just kind of like a throwback shift change and see how difficult that would be one day but I so I haven't done it yet and I don't can you tell us what the weather is like there are just no it's actually pretty beautiful outside we have temperatures around 20 degrees Fahrenheit winds are from the west at about 15 miles an hour which is actually a compromise time of year it's by not going to stay in that column for too much longer as the storms coming in and are actually mostly clear skies see and see a lot of the stars out tonight oh well I'll take your word for it that this is as good as it gets and I hope that when spring finally arrives you'll all celebrate it in appropriate fashion Thank you Adam and how long by the way do job applicants have to get the case and then we usually leave it open for about 2 weeks we have seen quite a few applicants out our Doesn't take too long to work overwhelmed with resumes Well good luck finding just the right person and thanks again I think you're. Is the next movie I've got my eyes on but. It's always a pleasure thank you so much for your time. If you. Well President Trump once told doctor that he would choke and he'd never worry about hearing the famous words you're fired but somebody must have told Dr Shaw can that because now the head of the Veterans Administration is out of a job Mr Show kind of former Obama administration official the 1st non-veteran how to head the V.A. Is to be replaced by the president's doctor Rear Admiral Ronnie Jackson. Was troubled by investigations into his travel spending and his leadership which had provoked a lot of enemies within the department and social can agreed to reimburse more than $4000.00 the internal watchdog concluded that he improperly accepted tennis tickets to Wimbledon and his then chief of staff doctor the emails to justify his wife traveling to Europe with him at taxpayer expense. Nevertheless lot of people are troubled by this latest from firing because they are worried about what's coming next Joe Chameli may be one of those He's national executive director of the American Veterans Service Organization Hello Joe if you could ask in rather how are you today and very well very well would you would you call yourself a supporter of Dr Shaw comes. We definitely felt it back short and it was do you very good job he had built up a lot of momentum he had mentioned he was an Obama holdover ready he had a low level job by the Obama administration is to encourage their President Trump actually appointed him and he was concerned by the U.S. Senate 100 it was 0 he was unanimously concerned as the secretary did a great job it is 1st year in a lot of the scandal that came about was something that. Welcome back read out of session a lot of ways and really you think it was you think it was manufactured to go against them. Quite a bit of it was absolutely quite a bit of it was twisted and. Leave the talking by Will when he traveled to Europe and was over there for a conference and every secretary of the V.A. Is gone since the last 40 years. And he was told that and that his wife was able to travel with him and after the travel was complete he found out that she should not have and that's when he was a check for what was coach in a way not 1st class travel it was typical travel that Wimbledon tickets were given to me by a friend of his he had no business relationships with. Government officials or held a higher standard for good reason but a lot of this was treated by. A group of people here in the United States that want to privatized veterans' health care and that's what this is as I said you have not to tell us about this because the moment of course veterans' health care is taken care of by the government and it's it's a it's a very good medical system isn't it if you used to be in the US that essentially you give free medical care for life which is a rare thing. And so it's based on your disability if you retire from the military you do full 20 or 30 years Ready yes completely free if you have disability my wife she was Air Force natural I should understand disabled so she is under percent of her health care provided by the V.A. It's part of what she earned as a veteran and yes the health care is very good and has 80 percent approval rating and there have been excess problems or been too many veterans coming back and wants to me that using help more than the capacity that hospitals can handle and so there's become a need to have some of our veterans seen in the community in the private sector there's a group out there that wants to really shut down dismantle our veterans health care system and force all that churns out into the private sector and I guess just just maybe just to put a gloss on this almost every city has a Veterans Administration hospital doesn't that a hospital which is reserved for people with military service no yet you're absolutely right in these are medical professions in these houses you know the specific and unique elements and the veterans such a strong and it's really fine coordinated care it's something we as an organization want to protect So the people who want to privatized A Where where do we know where is Rear Admiral Ronnie Jackson who's going to be the new Veterans Administration head where is he on the spectrum. There's a lot of concern tonight about the nominee about Dr. Jackson Because we don't know that for one but more concerning is all we do know is we don't see much in his background that would indicate he is qualified to run a $200000000000.00 government agency in the V.A. It's the 2nd largest government agency in the U.S. Federal government and it's a massive job and he becomes the 6th person to lead this organization in the last 4 years it's really hard to have any real reform or get any momentum on reasonable reform when you're constantly changing the top. To be fair there was a period of great crisis in the V.A. Was when people were waiting months for appointments and when records were being lost there was a there was a dreadful period for the V.A. About 2 years ago under President Obama absolutely ready and General Shelton I'm sorry I. Was the V.A. . Secretary at that time and he resigned because of scandal need a little lost control at the local levels and in our one of our hospitals in Arizona for instance they were falsifying waiting lists or they had secret waiting lists they weren't reporting. Veterans or waiting months for health care that they needed some argue whether rections actually died from that or not the bottom line is veterans will certainly suffer because of that and that's when we all had to become more open to easing Community Partners in Health Care and about a 3rd of all that she's now receiving their health care in the community we think that's enough number though whatever it takes to make sure ready the veterans receive the care that they need in the 10 we access but it also includes a lot of investment in the V.A. Answer structure and in his years a top dog to show can make a contribution. He really did we had some significant advancements in this reform in the past year all but more and there's some really important legislation that's been pending almost was put through by our Congress here last week very close but now all momentum is has come to a grinding halt tonight and we need to look at this legislation now we need to figure out what this all really means is a source of veterans are going to suffer because of that. I want to thank you very much indeed for your time thank you sir you take care of you too Joe surely as national executive director of. Well in India they've been following the a stallion cricket sambal very closely I caught up with Raul Tom them in Kolkata find out how the fans are reacting. Obviously like cricket fans across the world over the last week or so they've really been a lot of discussion here about what should happen to the Australian players following the ball tampering incident I think generally. What the situation has been is that people here like I think in many other countries including Australia they wanted to see pretty strict action taken against the players them and this is a country where cricket is almost like a religion but I think for many families the latest incident has seen them lose a little bit of their faith in the game I've been out on the streets of Calcutta to get some reaction to the bands that have been imposed this is what people make of it I think it's a fair sentence when he was good enough considering that he was because his career capturing the old city with one of being the wise captain I think it's also out at the I.P.O. That's going to cost him a lot of money a lot of a lot of money and bank will hurt but I think there's a place you have to pay for being so stupid they should have got a bigger punishment and I think at least for the time being the should be banned from playing in India one is good enough because you know straight in and out of the I.P.L. Yeah that's fine you penalty for your actions. They're pretty. Objective I would say. The mood seems to be the they go well they deserve. Very much and of course being banned from the Indian Premier League is really going to hit them hard in their pocket I mean you're looking at both of them being contracts that were around $1400000.00 pounds to be paid over 6 weeks of course on top of that huge opportunities to make money in the commercial sector here in India by forcing products and I think it's going to be very interesting to see that when they do come back Warner and Smith whether they're reinstated as the captains of their respective I.P.L. Teams next year and how much this is going to affect you know their brand value here in India. How much damage. To the way the. Look at the game I've been speaking to a former Indian select cat he says it's had quite an impact game which we all call the gentleman's game it's no longer a gentleman's game this too much of money involved and along with money out of wrong things up what about it damage that this is done to the fans trust in cricket if you ask me honestly the France trust that's already been damaged so many things about match fixing ball tampering and all these things that they're every other day when you see somebody getting out 1st ball with somebody dropping a catch people immediately say Oh it must be a fix game and that thing to be done to get this thing out. Well time will tell us a poor. In the meantime the I.P.L. Is a little bit poorer. Very much so Australian player Smith and Warner are certainly a little bit poorer from not taking part in it for the I.P.L. This year it was very difficult to have the Australian players enter the scene as Cricket Australia announced what they would do in the Indian board did the same because remember it's an important year for the I.P.L. Abroad you have 2 teams there are just rolls one of which Steve Smith was the captain of before this incident took place and the Chairman I see pickings who are coming back into the league following betting allegations so in a sense this year it was important that the I.P.L. Stayed away from controversy and having 2 people who are at the center of one of the biggest controversies to hit the sport of cricket I think was always going to be very difficult. Picture leaked exam papers which papers actually got. These are these India has many different boards and in Delhi lots of children sit at the Central Board of secondary education and basically it's now been announced that the Class 10 mathematics is basically G.C.S.E. Level and class 12 economic papers. There were they have had they're going to be resound millions of students because basically the question papers appear to have been leaked on what's up you know before the examinations took place this is highly embarrassing for the government the Indian prime minister has sent a message to the government minister concerned basically telling him that he's not very happy about this and once again investigations are beginning as to handle it is and this is happened this is not the 1st time it's happened that important examination papers are being leaked in India you know before exams take place and really can imagine the stress that many kids and going through these are important exams in India you know you need incredibly high marks to do anything good in mission into a good college and so this huge pressure on kids and when they thought they finished their exams many of them are now going to have to reset papers that could be crucial to their future and is it generally felt in student or prone to cheating. It's a huge huge problem Rob I'm sure that you and listeners may recall a couple of years ago those pictures which showed. Some students studying in Bihar and basically as they were people climbing up a multi-story building to basically give them and it's a problem to be India's trying very hard to get to grips with what has to say often failing to get to grips with because you know as I said before the pressure to succeed. There in some instances particularly rural India children do take to cheating often under pressure from their parents the governments the state governments are trying to clamp down on it one has to say not with much success the fact that this is happened in the capital of India is embarrassing for the state government there it's all saying steamy embarrassing for the national government and shows you that all attempts really to get to grips with cheating do not appear to be working. Should be a shortage of. Terrible news what's wrong. He is and you know the temperatures are really beginning to Saul where heading towards what some are saying is going to be the hottest April in the history of India temperatures in the east in India expected to be up by one degrees in the north maybe by even as much as 2 degrees now what's happened here in Kolkata is that the state government has taken over the distribution of beer and what they've done is they've increased the price of it by around $40.00 to $50.00 rupees which basically is an increase of around 25 to 30 percent so a lot of suppliers have said we can basically afford to sell our products anymore because nobody's going to buy in that particular price so they've withdrawn it from the market so lots of bars lots of the clubs that exist here in called cutter when you walk into them as I did just a few homes ago wrote and asked for a beer you'll find there's absolutely not none available there so certainly causing a lot of anger amongst beer drinkers here and people beginning to question the policy of the government the reason the state government took over the distribution system here was because they want to generate more revenue really can generate more revenue if people unable to get home to the product so if they stop drinking it sure did they should turn the distributors is there any possibility the distributors could actually get the money to the small. Well a lot of distributors I think have been saying look you know you can't just suddenly increase the price of something to such an extent particularly when already the national government has increased to 2 as well it appears to be a standoff at the moment I suppose there has to be a compromise somewhere because you know the government needs revenue distributors need to sell their products as well otherwise you know they're not going to make any money and they're going to put their companies and the financial strain but once they work it all out the poor bear drinkers and there's a growing number of them here in India particularly younger level Well I'm afraid there's no there for them but good for the Scots because it means more and more people are tending to India's favor to pull whiskey every cloud there's a silver lining Let's talk to David Gardner of The Boston Globe Hello David Iraq how are you doing good you're reflecting in a state with lots of people who have military service particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan on the departure of Dr David Shaw connotes the Veterans Affairs secretary. That's right not just the departure of shoal can but also a bit on the person who is replacing him White House doctor Ronnie Jackson was named by a President Trump today to run the V.A. The V.A. Is as we know is had a lot of problems over the last several years actually here in Massachusetts and on lots of other places it's a kind of scandal after scandal looking at quality of care it's one of the largest government run health care operations in the country of the largest It's a $200000000000.00 bureaucracy and obviously taking care of those veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan as well as. In previous wars it there have always been there's been some revolving door aspects here it's kind of a thankless job there's a huge backlog of cases and everyone who gets a job comes in and says they're going to reform the agency social Can it has gotten on Trump's bad side he's been talking for days if not weeks about pushing him out there's an ethics scandal around him about a trip that he took Social can is out here comes Ronnie Jackson that name that that selection has shocked a lot of people a surprise choice Trump raised Jackson is highly trained and qualified but a lot of people know Jackson as the guy who has been the physician to the president and had a a narrow a very high profile appearance because he declared the president's health as to be in very very good shape and I'm just searching for the quote here yes marveling at the 71 year old President's good health Jackson said it's just the way God made him which I think is what a lot. People are saying about the president I think I think he also said the president could live to be 200 didn't he and and he said that the president's blood pressure was was something amazing like. Under 22 over 80 it was really really low for a man of they want a man of 71 who you know he's not. Fit guy he's a big big man. Who is what probably 6365 something like that and there was a lot of speculation and questioning of all of that assertion that the president was in some such good shape but I think that the biggest qualification in Trump world is that he's on the good side of the president the president likes him personally he has access to the the White House residence. There's a story on The Associated Press that he has offices one is actually in the residence which is highly unusual for White House staff. So he is known as a as a really likable guy Navy doctor. And but there are people already questioning whether he has the bureaucratic skills or the administrative skills what you call it to run such a huge huge agency and of course we can't go without saying that this is yet another bit of turnover in the trumpet ministration. You know depending on how you count it 810 whatever top aides a couple of occasions directors 12 people who have rotated through in the 14 plus months of the trumpet ministration So the death story is indeed on the front page of The Boston Globe tomorrow. Another question being asked to be honest with ardency because a lot is being done about it in the community. Is helping people to get off opioids and kick their addiction and the moment as well what happens to people who are in sight or in custody that's right in in Massachusetts like like other states. Doesn't do a lot with incoming inmates who are opioid addicted and what we're reporting now is that the Department of Justice is investigating whether the state's prison system is violating something called the Americans of dissuade Disability Act by not providing them with what's generally referred to as methadone treatment for opioid abuse this presumably would help them get get off of opioids as they enter prison and perhaps help them ease into an opioid free life so they are questioning in a letter to the state officials that we obtained this afternoon whether the State Department of Corrections has violated the Americans with Disability Act And they say that the state of Massachusetts has existing obligations to accommodate this of disability there's a whole bunch of things going on here 1st and foremost there declaring are there seem to be indicating that inmates with an opioid abuse problem are considered disabled or qualified for. Some sort of protection under the a DA That's an interesting finding We've also got a situation here where we're running against type a little bit here the president his administration his Department of Justice is siding here with the treatment can. Indeed as treatment community is delighted at this development they're thinking that perhaps this is a sign that the Justice Department yet at prisons across the country will be trying to open burial and remove barriers to addiction treatment among inmates as they enter various prisons that could go a long way toward improving their quality of life of course but also perhaps getting to a point where when these inmates leave prison perhaps they will be less likely to become addicts again be to to return to the drugs when they get out so this is that there's a lot going on with this the Department of Justice this letter comes to us from the U.S. Attorney here who was just named by Trump in the last I don't know 3 or 4 months I suppose. And I suspect that the state of Massachusetts is going to have a lot to say about this in the coming days so we we might be seeing just the beginning of a new effort by the Trump administration to help opioid addicted inmates. Thank you David thank you.
