Or in response to the Polish crisis for example more recently in 2003 of course NATO members were divided over George Bush's insistence on invading Iraq so I think trying to. And even a NATO member buying a missile defense system from Russia as Turkey is doing today even here this is an unprecedented Turkey isn't the 1st member to do this in the 1990 s. Greece earlier version of the same system that Turkey is buying and this to lead to a minor crisis within NATO but one that was ultimately resolved so none of these things are entirely unprecedented NATO has managed to survive some of the challenges in the past and so going forward then do the kind of big threats remain roughly the same. Well I think NATO alternately in if we think of keeping the Russians out as one of the the main unifying purposes of of the alliance I think if anything in the recent years given Russian actions in Ukraine and close to home and souls Brit if anything does has greater urgency than say in the 1990 s. When Russia seemed to be liberalizing and certainly seemed to be much much less of a threat than have been in the 1980 s. And so if there was a problem somewhere and I suppose you know we're talking today about the Baltic States the response would be what pretty definite Would it. Well again I think Alliance solidarity has always been been a challenge and it's always been a test but ultimately it's been a task that NATO has and has consistently passed I think if we think for example in the early 1980 s.
