Radio Scotland which means we open surgery doors and I'm joined by resident property guru Brian Gilmore again I pry and thank you very much for standing by ready to take a few questions very it is always good Let's get straight to the phone lines and speak with Krishna morning Krishna Good morning Larry good morning and many thanks for having reached the time slot here Oh no listen it's a pleasure and thanks for taking the time you're through directly to Brian what's your question Yes Good morning Prime Time my question are right I've got a couple of course and vote are interrelated of course 1st of all basically with regard to selling rate property you know that just with all property actually at. A sickly basic requirements that are for example shoring to house us Nathan clean tidy and looks years of present appearance at all those things you know that kind of I can probably understand but what I would like to ask is in terms of legal requirements and of course the property agent told me that a Home report with a fire and all that but in terms of providing a property for a sale what her legal documentation I had to keep ready you know before hand Brian could you please address me or we have the most important thing is that Home report that the agents have told you about Ok that has like a name on your house all right I'd say you're preparing for the potential buyer as an independent report bias of the that independent report will see this is the issues with the house so the greed issues on your her. On us bases of 12 in city where one is perfect and 3 is a major problem Ok so if you get anything through now who report this guy 30 yet get it fixed before you put on the market and then get the report refreshed so that so that part it will also have the energy reading of your home and it will also have the value of your home on it so that the home reports yet after teams have legal requirements for documentation it would be helpful if you've done anything like got your boiler gone you Boileau or even if you've got maintenance contract on your boiler short or anything like that you don't have to have it that half the people want to hunt because it's just beneficial Ok because the more good things about your house you can tell a potential buyer the better search and then did after a lawyer that will do the rest of the necessary legal people work when you're doing the c.e.o. Transaction it's sort of right and wrong but to go to the whole report that would be done by if it were done by the property agent as it is where you can organize yourself appropriation will organize a likely be an independent from a surveillance the likelihood is that the property agent whom you choose will probably have a relationship with a severe that they can get a good price I may be marginally cheaper than if you organize yourself so they'll log a night at the exchange you have draft for you to review the recent questions and the About that they will ask you about your property such as accounts who tax band and things of that I'm saying your link for you to fill one and then you send it for you to say yes I'm happy with that ready to go and use an absolute thank you for and just say if you don't know just a 2nd part of the you'll get your money's worth Chris thank you I go on a wonderful that's that's a good wonderful advice right there and they have such a good time you know you're under so much that place which I have to really understand very well you know to thank you all right just one other thing is having sold my property you know cattle thinking of well going to new build property and my experience because my son has done the same and makes it a little there see it over and over there's a pretty good though. Tough shit you know they don't give you that right over leverage at all and so in order to protect myself right I also blamed us all brain that's a vein to simply not protect myself if I'm moving into a new bill property one of the things I should be looking for from the builder written by legal requirements to ensure that I'm not left in the cold to know that I'm protecting my soul draining Ok Lisa goes beyond that and so. Should a festival at the Seine issues on the home before you actually move on and they should allow you to do an inspection and then you can do. On the property some she appreciates the building a number of properties there might be the odd thing maybe with a door on a kitchen door snow or hung perfectly Street good on the property the site manager should take you going to property and you can do snagging you know again if you think about it he may be doing some walk on the property and the last thing is the builders were going in and one of the one of the treats may have just banged the wall in the yes it accident happened accidents happen sooner make sure that the wall was a perfect the plaster works perfect Ok Don't be embarrassed to go round with a fine tooth comb with the back defying glass I highly absolutely everything but I'm sure you know like I'm a blame for some radical left places very not too sure she acts as my friend of lies anyway but then as of late for some can I ask for anything any other gala different to let ensure that you want to say Don't you want to say missing the 1st place because I'm glad to know that I can get back to what I really had it was sort of all your legal rights to the fact you have you still have the right the Stoics knocking issues that can arise once you've moved on to a property Ok you are quite too it doesn't have to be you that does this knocking you are quite in take 2 to ask somebody else to do this one thing on your behalf Ok And for you to see that about a look because of my challenges here I'm asking this person to do this nagging see acquainted to Tara once you move that other snacking issues and then the feign own protection. Is Morse virtually all belt us will sign up to some form of God in te system Ok so does this the National DAs say this the any b.c. 10 year warranty or there are things like premium ganti or check meat these are sort of. Like a warranty when you but when you get your television right I want you and I should end up going to what they were saying up to those but the issues that they will deal with will be me they will be more likely to be Meijer issues with your home. But they will be for 10 years but they did those warranty set in place so you have the idea protection which is the c. Just make sure that if you're buying from a small boda just check the gun in te system that they are saving up to sound good question but I also love many many times for that excellent good I'm really very much operator wonderful thank you thank you thank you very much good luck good luck with the new house as well I think your Krishna did very well that your his people his personal gurus are going to take a bone from yeah I mean I really I think you should if you would like to also a book a call in right now with with Brian our phone lines are open Oh wait oh wait 59295 w. All the things you were afraid to ask you Bel Darrow your your estate agent if there's anything at all that you find confusing perhaps your 1st ever experience of buying or selling a property is so confusing and the so much admin and so much paperwork and and the regulations change just when you think you know what you're doing I mean one of the major lenders there's a review recently and they found that 60 percent of foster home buyers had a major misunderstanding a boat the house buying process about what they were about to do Tema Knology. What particularly to do things like deposits on getting a mortgage and things like that so. As I've said before the only silly question is a question you do and if you don't answer please do ask away oh wait wait 59295 double 0 or you can text Brian on 80 to 95 got a call coming in from Edinburgh with Derek morning Derek. Ok well a mark question is a regards to repairs to property Ok yeah I'll ever lead them but I'm so lost said to years of being overcharged by Adam or Kerry so and they took to mistake legislation Ok when I asked when I actually empties that I end up or walk up to the point they all walk visually walk over to the candidate over. I go as far as a balance sheet I shouldn't have to develop 1st question if you don't agree with them but I wish they had a year on. Base chaparral assess how you might have several questions to find out that most science or not we the use of the property manager out of the un little dog I'm a no no and what the character of done is of a lawyer to proclaim just you know together in front of stature as a pair comes and they've got a old used to 2 properties with their only pair want to share their bow Ok Well you mention the you go into a slush fund that's less than a table if you dispute the bio you shouldn't Pete it but you know that's easier said than done because when you call a statutory authority such as a local authority from money then people in Feedly tend to to given. You know a lot of your Yes So if you go it's one of the you may need to consider the you could consider a. Property dispute and it depends on the need to know if it should so they will be able to help you and whether the specifics of what unites us here can be dissolved at this police but once you know what you look Austin fact is no cost a place to go to is the foster tribe you know of the housing and property chamber so if you just what you go into computer computer and just Google f t t housing chamber Well leisure I have a problem because I'm just like sick Ok. Well you know look I'm sure if you go to the library if you go to the library a library will do that I know he would love you do not for you and even if you just get the telephone. But even if you just ask the librarian to look up the telephone number this is a telephone number for the fusty a tribe you know of the housing and property and foreign name talk through what you know shoes on and then they will give you gate insist a way that the have the remit to cover it and it has no cost to go to the fascia tribe you know it is designed to be you and I can go along with a legal representation too it's a very informal thing similar So as I go as far as a social justice minister and he drove back to me and our is now up here with us I'm just so a little back again asking for more specific guidance because it didn't cover the issue was actually completed Well I do think from my own experience if you know I have written to ministers and you never get specific answers they will send on to our department who then give you a generic cancer. So I think from what you've got here the fust rate because it's a new cost route would be to go to the library the like will help you if you've got to. Challenge is of gaining access onto the Internet just to Google or even just for that aging quiet and asked for the telephone number of the tribe you know of the housing chamber and. He you know so. This is the simple thing you need to do is just f t t. Yes. Tif are totally different or mean so. You know of the housing scheme by which a librarian go to the library librarian help you get online get them a call talk about the genetics they'll tell you whether they've got that we meant to look into it for you thank you very much thank you very much for calling us this morning Derek and if you just hang on the line actually will make sure that we've taken down that information correctly and will and will point you in the right direction by one of the things I wanted to talk about was sort of the trends of the property market this is a story about code living communities. And imagine what's code living it sounds kind of groovy general war Jacki United have a set any day. As people who can think back to sort of commune living of the seventy's it's Ok Now now you've just gone too far I've had stories of that yeah yeah appearance would have told us a lot but it's not the kind of thing that is sort of a more sophisticated version of that boat people with shared ideas she adds living aspirations maybe she had what confided in is pulling together and being in a location where they can they can share that together and so they can they can live and not community together where they can in feed off each other so it's that sort of idea like all of these takes of trains so rewarding of something that's come before that started in California and then gradually starts to come across here right there's been some areas of it I've happened in London probably the 1st Bush we'd see in Scotland Vietnam but upright. Type of thing is not quite here yet it started to hit in London and as a boat the challenges of the cost of living somewhere you know parts of San Francisco it's just implausible for people to afford to live the people pooling the resources to try and Shia in a loving expose expedience of like minded people to help reduce costs it kind of like college dorms for grown ups with added services you might have a much smaller space with the communist areas yes that's a good way to put it right very much like college college living and college accommodation and student accommodation but it's a bit more sophisticated is it then feeds into what can things of that but it really has to deal with the challenges that we are experiencing is as we increasingly are fainting and say jobs across the world are concentrated in the me just set that people need a moving closer to the major city cities are growing in that drives up property values and so a lot of these things are just ways of people trying to deal with those increased property costs and the other end of the spectrum another trend that we're seeing emerging is of retirement. Immunities retirement living sort of getting beyond being shuffled off to a nursing home towards the end of our lives it's again I think borrowing from the American model of all your blog ations and responsibilities your family had done now it's time for you to start living and having much more of a sort of an optimistic can proactive approach to retirement Yeah I think so and I think I think you've hit the nail no head there with the much more proactive. Of all the living because historically my father who's where we're tired no jokes about it when he was young it was you went to someone's retirement function and 18 months later unfortunately they made it to the funeral Yeah and how that has dramatically changed because we've got a more in general a more affluent retired group of people and again people who who don't see retirement as being the end of their life but actually their retirement is being the start of a new life start a 2nd act exactly and and being able to take advantage of still being very fit and healthy into their seventy's and into the eighty's and I'm wanting more than just as it used to be right Ok you know past that you can set in a corner and watch the television and I want to not allow we're going to see those sorts of things are on the other already here in Scotland those kinds of those kinds of communities and I and as you as you've sort of hinted at that not going to come cheap no they're not going to come cheap but again that's And this is we are the idea comes from again we started to see them in England where these things really catch on is we have companies then start to invest in it because they can see a return on investment and where they can see a return on the investment given back to Airlie when we talked about historically property values doubling and value the average property value in Scotland in 979 was saying 900000 pounds and the average property values quantities 270000 pounds so the people who acquired back then yeah I have seen great leaps. In the value of the property they have been mortgage free for some tame and these are really much really aimed at the sort of top 10 percent that the to talk to him percent of wealth of retired people the people whose property value in Scotland in Scottish teams might be half a 1000000 and upwards he's got no date associated with out they were just born at the right time they just wrote that property and the idea is to is that they will say without property release the equity and want to live somewhere where the something to more than just affluent that there's more going on there's more nightlife going on this more community life going on Sounds good sign me up. Radio Scotland travel. Thank you very much well as any long distance runner will tell you staying hydrated is key to going the distance so when a lady by the name of Joanna packin who was running the London Marathon and her friend mentioned that she would a bit de hydrated trying to drink the next big cup of water that she was offered along the route then she promptly had a fit her heart stopped and she ended up in a coma for 3 days not because she was dehydrated but because she was over hydrated So joining me now to explain exactly how that can happen and how much is too much when it comes to water is a nutritionist from the natural source Water Association coincidentally also called Joanna welcome to try to hit this morning Joanna good morning thank you very much indeed I'm assuming it's fairly rare what happened to this amateur runner. Absolutely it's rare and that in actual fact she didn't just have one cup of water it was the year the marathon weather was extremely warm every chain trained over a very cold winter ran the marathon on a very warm day and she understood she needed to drink more and drink water every stop every provision of water throughout I understand this about 19 I can't say I'm a marathon runner so she had quite a large quantity of water on what that can do if you drink extremely long which I'm talking liters and liters of water in a very short space of time effectively dilutes all the salt in your body and your body can't carry on to function I mean phenomenally red Please don't think I think in a bottle of water that you look at yes but this huge amounts in a short period of time but I mean we've all seen the London marathon we've seen lots of math and when there's this sort of these water stations that is tiny little to the cups isn't it of of water is a couple of gulps and you would have thought that the by the sweat that your you that you're losing during a 26 mile. Run. There's no way that you'd be overdoing it by having a cop even you know every couple of mild a couple of miles but evidently that's not the case yes absolutely and I can't stress heart enough how important hydration is in daily life but running a marathon I must say I'm not completely aware of the circumstances of my namesake running the marathon I know she did make it to the end that the could have been other things in play for instance if she just had water that didn't have some of the kind of sports drinks that have got some of the elements like sodium that your body really needs a new lose when you sweat so it I don't know the whole circumstances but what I can say is it can happen if you drink liters and liters of water over a shot I'm talking 510 minutes now it's quite difficult to do you can drink a big glass of water if you're thirsty but to drink 2 or 34 liters of water in that short period time is quite difficult so it is extremely uncommon while ever go ahead go ahead I can't stress how hard how important it is to actually be hydrated in our everyday lives because I mean you would think for the vast majority of people probably myself included most people are actually drinking enough is that term say you're absolutely right and we know that across the nation a lot of people don't even drink a glass of water in on on a daily basis obviously they're having other drinks but typically the nation tends to be slightly to be hydrated and the way we can tell is very simple it's your urine color so the color of our Your in our pay needs to be pale straw color I've heard somebody else call it champagne color so take your pick and that's the best sign of hydration and any darker and darker all you need to you need to drink. Absolutely and yet what about the coffees and teas and juices does that count or not everything counts in a way towards hydration the healthiest choice is water whether that's tap water or whether you choose a natural source mineral water or spring water all those waters have no added sugar they're calorie free a great way to titrate team coffee as well I think in the past people have a bit of a notion that they say coffee is is dehydrating doesn't count in not fact caffeine which is present in coffee can have a small tea hydrating effect but because they your drinking say a mug of coffee you get a much more fluid than the small effect of the caffeine so coffee does count toward titration So is there a rule of thumb because it used to be didn't it used to be 8 glasses of water a day is what was what we should all be aiming for is that still the case that such still about right so women need a bit less than men but yeah $810.00 glasses a day all drinks of any kind soak up a tea cup of coffee but I think from my perspective as a nutritionist everyday regulatory sui should be looking at water tea and coffee without added sugar. Because that just helps our hydration and when I think sugar into our bodies sugary drinks are fine as a treat every now and then and and tell us you know the health benefits for those who are are not yet convinced that the pure water and plenty of it but not bad not overdoing it obviously with one of liters actually does benefit you health well health wise Absolutely we need water in our bodies for every process that's going on to pump your blood around to get rid of the things your body doesn't need so we need to keep our hydration levels topped up the minute you feel thirsty you're actually already slightly to hydrated water is the best choice so whether you like to alter whether you prefer mineral water or spring water all those waters are the healthiest way to titrate and final tip for people who are so boring. I don't like drinking water I know I hear people say that. A cucumber in it but if they are absolutely yes yes I would be cautious about adding sugary syrup still water because you simply I think Sugar which we know is not the best in large quantities for a t 3 instance but yes I say lemon but a cucumber but you know just a glass of cold water I think just tastes wonderful because it's quite simple and pure We will take your advice and we thank you so much for joining us this morning nutritionist from the natural source Water Association Joanna Hignett thank you very much I mean I suspect stays very well hydrated because he likes to be fairly active is jumpy to. Limit your member let me have that give me a little bit to play at the sketch where he does you know you can get water of a turn up and then it goes away he says but we buy it people buy it hydration you keep Well you you've got your water I've noticed that you have me everywhere but I don't think you know if I think that I specially I think what I'm doing my early morning shifts here I do tend to you when you know they all hate ration thing to want you which is to Nokes the yet African professor 1st discovered it in the Cape mirth and didn't we were people were drinking too much water but I'm not about running Yes And a lot is this what this woman who was sort of doing the London Marathon My friend thought she would be hydrated that she had one more of those cups that you grab along along the way and she was in a coma for 33 days I don't suspect that that doesn't happen very often as we heard there is the other argument that there was a business is just trying to get us to buy more water whether it is just drink when you're thirsty there is that well just well we're doing these hackers of men to disaffiliate to gated in large scale cyber attack on Labor's digital platforms and it's been reported to the National Cybersecurity Center we're trying to find out what it is male body image this research would do maybe a reality check on what men want to look like you know almost 3 in 10 Scottish men say they feel anxious because of their body image and this is a survey from the Mental Health Foundation it's got know all these you know we've always got a generational is that much younger men or yes it will be younger men because we're fed now with these covers of Men's Health magazine we could be perfectly chiseled guys who frankly if the hydrated for the photo shoot haven't the same with all the underpants models they've d.o.j. To they are in the gym the whole time the full time that's a full time body to be filler that yes the job wears loads of people think oh I need to look at that so we'll discuss that too and retailers need to do more to improve the accessibility of their websites to go to people with disabilities including blind people because you've got these website readers and they don't quite work on Joe wicks the body guy will be dropping by to try to get kids more healthy well that coming up at midday Thank you Mr Beattie thank you very much indeed coming up at 12 o'clock today I will be back with you tomorrow from 9 am and . The judge will be back Karen Mackenzie will be back with a brand new dilemma and if you have teenage kids you need to hear this tomorrow's dilemma is the other day I was looking through my daughters fighting she said 15 pay the bills so I think it's my right to have no idea what she's up to as I was looking through I end up finding need photos she's been sending to some boy what should I do. What would you do you can text 802950 email k. At b.b.c. Dr u.k. Clue number 5 also 2 places that share a name with the royal father and daughter and Clue number 6 it has had 2 names both containing a common word that isn't in the current name catch up on the conversation listen via the b.b.c. Sums up mornings on b.b.c. Radio Scotland. So from midget 2022 it looks like a drink drivers will have to fit a breathalyzer in their car when returning to the road after a conviction is part of e.u. Safety standards for cars vans and trucks the vehicle safety requirement would see a so-called alcohol into a log fitted to cars so recidivist drink drivers would need to blow into the devices before they're actually able to start the engine the plans were approved in March but rubber stamped by the European Council late last week and it seems likely the reforms will be introduced in the u.k. Because the government has agreed to Mirah e.u. Road safety rules after Bret's it so will incar breathalyzers help to curb future drink driving offenders Joining me to discuss that the this morning we have guests here 1st of all we have a Neil Gregg who is director of Policy and Research at I am road smart morning meal Good morning thank you very much indeed for joining us Graham Benj Also joining us motoring journalist from u.k. Mo to talk high Graeme Lauren Jackie and Susanna Robins alcohol and drug specialist for digital limited morning Suzanne morning Jacki thank you very much indeed all 3 of you for joining us this morning Neal is is this going to be a helpful technology do you think I think it's a technology that's already been proven to work across other European countries I think it's a long time waiting for it to come to the u.k. And the Scotland so we think it's a great idea it is still going to be for everybody thankfully because. The vast majority of people are not drink drivers but for those repeat offenders for those people who have had particularly blue and particularly high levels in the past this could be a way of getting them back onto the road see if they after they've see it or perhaps even making the ban a bit shorter so it's all about targeting repeat offenders those people have an alcohol problem and that means that they really have to do something extra to start the car that can be tracked it could be monitored and it really will perhaps change their behavior I think overall it will have an effect on on drink driving by making it look at it more difficult to get back on the road some people might not like this idea but it certainly is going to be a case where every single person in Scotland is going to be blowing in a Chub from 2022 to get the car to start so it's just people who have offended and for how long does that go on is it just sort of one count and you're out so you if you have one drink driving offense on your record are you for ever more obliged to have one of these Alcoa lots of breathalyzers in the car well that will depend on what happens the details of legislation that comes along for us it's about tailored solutions you know what we seem to find now is that people who are still drinking and driving you've ignored all the messages in the vast majority of people have got the message about doing driving we have a lower limit in Scotland in a way these people have got alcohol problems I don't think that's an individual situation it's family breakdown it's it's all sorts of different things that can cause you to drink and drive so I think that the solutions need to be individual in tailored so it could be a bind it could be a drink drive it to cation course it could be an alcohol auk all the and also a bit of mentoring a bit of support as well to try and help people to break that alcohol problem which unfortunately manifests itself in drink driving which we knew is very very dangerous Suzanne on that note let's bring you into the conversation yourself and alcohol and drugs specialist for digital limited Is this something that you are in favor of. Absolutely I mean into looks are the only way to ensure that a vehicle cannot be moved by anybody under games. And the way they work if there was an ignition system. And the person to start the engine has to supply a clear breast sample if there's any alcohol present over the cutoff points then they simply can't stop the engine and there's lots of things in place to ensure that the person operating there will actually believe that the into the tie Seiko facial recognition you call g p r s location so while we can manage the actual insult. So yeah it saves is definitely the the way to go and yeah as as Neal said it's been a long time coming to you calibrated case happening Graham Where else has this sort of thing been tried out and how successful has it been well it is very successful in many other places in the world we can develop some more behind the rest of the world in this and most of us States operate this system slightly differently or varying technologies across states but essentially they all do the same thing from styles the same most Australian states and another European state so you know the u.k. And Scotland is other contributors said a lot. Of the rest of the. But the u.k. In check in the figures this morning just by way of a little bit of extra research is actually the highest limit in the whole of Europe . Point 0.08 percent of block outgo I were as a skull and as a point 05 percent these are not easy figures to digest but just by way of comparison much of Europe is currently on the 00.2 So we're a long way behind the growing and it is in the context of road traffic deaths caused by our call and accidents caused by alcohol increasing year on year for the last 10 years or so we do still seem to be in that land of always Ok to have one drink you know and then and then obviously affect your judgment on whether it's a good idea to have an another one or not but it's still a common misconception that you can get away with. Into one large glass of wine a lot of. The other 2 contributors I'm sure would agree with me there is actually no safe limit any amount of alcohol will affect your judgment whether to safely do other vehicles coming back to to you Neal on how reliable is the technology do we know it would have that been circumstances in places where it's been used before where it was sort of you know an inaccurate reading and people have been unfairly penalized know that the technology is there liable now is particularly prevalent in things like the bus companies and so on lots of sort of public lawyer drivers bus drivers are doing this almost every day in many parts of Europe so it is very reliable and I think we have no problems with that I think you know there will be issues there will be potentially some people who see it as an invasion of their of the liberties but I think you know we are talking here as a say about repeat offenders we're not talking about the general public and it could be an interesting dilemma about England Scotland because you know you could have a situation where you can blow into a chub in Carlisle and you would be above or below the legal limit in England but if you drive across to Gretna you could be within the Scottish limit so be interesting to see how the technology deals with that sort of situation because it's been a fairly unusual and the European context but but overall you know that this this is just a cookin that's going to be facilitated in the car from 2022 but you know it's not it's not something that everyone's going to have to use so just take me through sort of the logistics of it so let's it's 2022 this has been rolled out somebody gets busted for drink driving who's who comes around to fit that equipment well that that will that will be decided by the courts I mean we see this is a court disposal so basically what will happen is you'll be caught for drink driving you'll be a repeat offender or you've blown above a certain level so it may be 2 or 3 times over the limit so you know obviously a high high risk offender and these people already do get extra retests an extra help in extra bands already so they already targeted and it will be for the court to decide how that's voted but it just means a whole new cars will have that. But easy to plug in type of device whereas now it's a bit more difficult to fit the fittest to retrofit to some vehicles so it makes a lot easier for course to give a given done as an extra sentence and Graham how House of Tinker proof to think they're going to be a people going to be able to interfere with the mechanism in the way that people do sometimes with the speedometer or you know how many miles of cars done in its lifetime and they're trying to set it on things like that will it be able to before you know. The subject of the subject of any kind of funny business idea I'm sure there will be people who are trying to free the system to the challenge for the car manufacturers across the world or they're going to have to start fitting a system which can then be localized for each individual. Tamaqua that is that car is sold into so the essentially is probably going to be in 2 parts one part which will be the interlock bit and the other lot with the other power which will use the alcohol detection but. It's the latter which I think is going to be probably fixed by a police officer Post caught all by an officer of the court but as Lee's so far. Contributors said many many bus companies are using this technology many Laurie companies it's it's proved to be very very reliable and very effective and incidentally I think most airlines use it as well says that let's let's bring you back in Explain to us about Alcoa digital and its role. So Alcatel still has been supplying Alcantara testing equipment to companies for nearly 200 years and we've seen a massive increase in demand within to the west allies is mainly for companies freight logistics transport companies wanting to fit them in specially but also personal uses where there are queries or concerns about a member of the family perhaps operating a vehicle when they should. They interrupt themselves obviously date back to 1015 years they've been in use with offender programs in states in a year and yeah I mean they really are short haul way of ensuring that a copy starts it we've been helping people get them treated supplying making sure that my understanding how to use the pen not actually that complicated in terms of getting them stated I understand. What Graham was saying about the the manufacture of the car manufacturers but potentially having issues in fact really is just going to be a mojo that they'll need to integrate to sort of the facilities already there like Scan urine and some of the big trucks organization so it's definitely feasible for any new cars to have this facility fitted and then obviously if if instructed by quote There is a simple set of plug in process the difficulty will be obviously having something that can be interactive with all of the manufacturers different types of into account activity is not just one type of interlock that exists so yeah it's definitely the way forward and you know the England and Wales have got a long way to catch up with the rest of Europe Scotland does have a much lower limit 8 in line with the rest of your knowledge and it's about time that England Wales coach often have to say I says Well and here's an an argument in favor of harmonization across all European nations approach and current and Graeme and open plan full so neo can comment on this is the sort of that reduced limit how has that impacted on people's behavior they think Well it's interesting because the natural fight drink driving hasn't changed much in Scotland with a lower limit and it's what we said at the time actually that people who drink drive know ignore Olympics so a lower limit is getting the message over and I think you see this with the restaurant trade ever being screaming about or voted you know the vast majority of people get the message they are drinking less in Scotland is pretty much a 0 limit now it's not worth the risk. Of having one drink in England perhaps the style of these myths about having a pint and so on but what we've seen in Scotland is that the people who are being caught drink driving are 234 times over the old limit let alone the new limit and that's why these sort of programmes are about targeting those repeat offenders those high risk offenders rather than the general mainstream drivers at a very very small number of repeat offenders who just ignore all of the roles and quite convince the very can get away with drink driving is to get away with that is the most frightening aspect of this they're quite convinced won't be caught and in many cases they are caught probably and Suzanna coming back something that struck me that you said is you know with the you're working with large organizations and and car manufacturers and all kinds of different large scale organizations but that you have been contacted by individuals who are interested in having something like this fitted in their car or perhaps you know a teenage son or daughter's car and they're learning to drive or a member of the family that they're concerned about what kind of price point with this sort of thing back for an individual so they do very obvious leaders there's quite a few different makes on the market as standard the drugs and how to drive a $5000.00 which is one of our most popular interlocks that started around about $900.00 pounds so it's not cheap but if you don't compare the cost of. A drink driving ban and how that affects your insurance policy and training and you know your career except checks that it's relatively cheap. And you know we do we get a lot of people who are concerned about other members of their family like you said youngsters who you are passing the test although to be fair the younger generation don't have the same sort of mentality to was drinking and driving but for example the older generation where you know Arkansas the seventy's it was it was a standard thing you know people weren't subject to the same. Drink drive laws and their perception of risk is perhaps slightly less than that of the youngsters but you know it's very very popular and is there a mechanism involved in the system whereby if somebody you know they do the breathalyzer they fail if the engine doesn't start and they repeatedly do that is that being recorded somewhere is somebody taking note that this person is trying to get in the car and drive when they're over the limit so obviously it totally depends on which device they have fitted because different devices have different capabilities but certainly one of the greatest $7000.00 has. A sort of. Information Management System so if a violation is triggered and is war a violation would be if somebody is repeatedly trying to start the engine when they're over the cut off then yes it will send an s.m.s. Or enable by the management system software to either an authorized user or manager notifying them that Joe Bloggs has blown into or attempted to start a vehicle bases his location or her location this was the amount of alcohol in the system versus what the cutoff actually is and yeah I mean there's a follow up procedure more that system is due more used for offender programs and also for commercial sort of company involvements if you don't tend to use are so much for the personal user he's wanting to make sure that their family members are safe but the facilities that obviously we've been talking about about alcohol mainly But is there that it can also spot when somebody is under the influence of drugs. As yet there isn't a drug allies are sort of in flux is still as such obviously Scotland came inches line with the rest of England wild with regards to drug testing on the roadside So if somebody goes stopped on the side of the road and was no to blame hadn't they harvest the best allies a test in the place would almost certainly want to perform a drug test. Anything simple saliva based just in the side of the moment there isn't anything in play at a time but technology is going so far it will surprise you if sort of getting in a couple years time it would be something out of the we'll be talking about a come back and talk to us when that one's up and running but thank you thank you very much for talking with us this morning from Alcoa digital Ltd alcohol and drugs specialist for them Susanna Robins joining us this morning along with Graeme Benj motoring journalist from u.k. Mota talk and Neil Gregg director of Policy and Research at I am road smart as the planet warms just like everywhere else Scotland's climate is changing this is fixable only if we act immediately and aggressively now to reduce greenhouse gas emissions how exactly do animals react to be strangers and why ice of Duras brings you a series on climate change we have as a nation and the world got to improve the way we live we grow our own for invades and it's got a carbon footprint of 100 meters nature based solutions which John can really if we get it right be a world leader and so all the power source comes from the turbine up on the Hill So what does that mean for bills for you now to listen Saturday mornings from 630 on b.b.c. Radio Scotland or subscribe to Scotland I do or is on b.b.c. Signs. It is 55 here on b.b.c. Radio Scotland Ok we have been supplying very clever cryptic clues for this week's name the place quiz and it is time to welcome back Carol Huff professor of on the mastic at Glasgow University for the big real big reveal morning Carol good morning Jackie Well you've stumped me because nobody got it right today really Yeah how does that happen what what a shame. But very sad yes we can tell that you're delighted Ok let's have told. Us about the misery it's a town of Port Glasgow. Take us through those clues explain yourself Ok clue one that today's place was named after somewhere difficult to get to so Port Glasgow was founded in 16th 68 to serve as the main port for Glasgow because it was difficult for large ships to get to Glasgow because they they couldn't navigate up the Clyde until the river was state and in the early 19th century so it was specifically founded for for that purpose Ok clue to the next clue is the name of a political party so that's the Green Party and Glasgow is the Brittonic word for the green hollow so that was intended to lead people to Glasgow. As was closely it shows part of its name with places in Jamaica or in Kentucky So again both Jamaica and Kentucky had a lot of place names transferred from Scotland including a place named Glasgow. So that was part of its name but clue for it shares the other part with 2 places named after women so that was Port Charlotte and Port Allen on the Isle of Iowa very good they were named respectively after the the mother and the wife of Walter Frederick Campbell who owned a locket out history and distillery on the island that was the other part that was a port part also clear $52.00 places that share a name with the royal father and daughter so that was Port Charlotte again and also Port William and Dumfries and Galloway. 6 It's hard to know you both contain a common word that isn't in the current name so that common word is the word New Port Glasgow was a regionally called New Port Glasgow and as so often happens it got shortened but before that those early in a new work literally meaning new building which is now preserved in the name of Newark Castle Yes I say that that ruins still stands doesn't it I think it goes Oh yes yes still there you know castle so. Let me go to you know delighted on you. Trying to mask my disappointment. Here a few more wrong guesses just to get a really Robin stew in Johnston said Aberdeen the rest and be thankful that came from Susa to it Barbara McGill very sad Charles Town. Up in Edinburgh said Herradura lassies a Jack in full Kirk he's tried a few guesses today but you well and truly stumped them Carol so that was some great guesses as I wonder why did they drop the new I wonder Newport Glasgow sounds very strict glamorous I think places often do get short. As do ordinary words people say them rapidly and drop the last distinctive bit well listen well done to you thank you so much indeed for joining us this morning that's Carol Huff who's Professor of onomastics at Glasgow University who stopped you all in the name of the place quiz I will be back tomorrow morning at 9 am But do you stand by fascinating program coming up with our very own John p.t. Enjoy the rest of your day radio. B.b.c. B.b.c. Radio Scott. Rambles Thank you good afternoon it's 12 o'clock. On Radio Scotland today was the. Everybody we're talking about male body image after survey firm nearly a 3rd of men say there's makes them anxious men like women are existing restrained by images of idealized on achievable Audi's Olsen will be looking at who may be behind the cyber attack on the Labor Party this morning and their Buddy Guy Joe wick tells us the role he's taking up the children need some going into school doing a live workout inspiring the kids motivating them hopefully raising some money for an amazing charity and event. Still to come Victoria has the news Labor says there's been a sophisticated and large scale cyber attack on its digital platforms and sources told the b.b.c. That the party has been subject to tens of millions of attacks recently mostly coming from Russia or Brazil Here's the B.B.C.'s digital election correspondent Joe tidy what they're saying is it was an attempted attack and it was an attack but it failed basically and I know from speaking Slovakia just now that this was what's called a day Das attack a distributed denial of service attack which means what they what this is the type of attack where they flood a server a website system with data in order to bring it down. The Conservatives have renewed their assault on what they call Labour's reckless spending plans if they win the general election they've attempted to calculate the extra taxes they believe a Labor government would tab to bring it in to pay for its policies Labor has dismissed the Tory claims as fake news stating that their manifesto has not even been published chance however the interim leader of the Scottish conservatives Jackson Carlo accused Labor of disowning commitments they've already announced we have had a whole series of promises from the Labor Party since the 27th you know action is a bit rich for them no to say that they just sold all of those I think we all understand that after all the hard work we've done to get the economy into the position where we can move forward from a position of strength to take advantage of the opportunities face the challenges that will be in a post. It's that world the last thing we want to do is to take ourselves on some sort of river cruise back to the 1970 s. And the Astaire Ritchie and division of disaster that represented on the lever for the economy before elsewhere on the campaign trail the Scottish liberal Democrats are calling for more investment in flood defenses the s.n.p. Is urging whoever forms the next government to make tackling child poverty a priority while Scottish Labor are talking about selection. The number of Scots in work fell in 3 months to September according to the latest official figures at the same time Scotland's unemployment total rose the jobless rate for Scotland stands at 4 percent that's higher than for the u.k. As a whole the Office for National Statistics also show that across the u.k. Wage growth slowed down over the summer.
