Ha. Ha . Ha. Ha ha. Ha. Ha. Oh. The. The oh. My. God. The site and all the govern Golic choir the air and from the hair forehead of next week's Royal National more kicking off on this evening I'm going to Michoud you by Catherine Collins out here is the choir conductor Good evening Hello there how are you doing and I'm good yes starting to eat well I hope so. On the Gilded Age On a scale of one the confident are you feeling whale variable in a bull giving sometimes something to eat and I'm very confident and then we have blips but they not support making music so easily Yeah because when you are the conductor of this wonderful choir tell us how you got involved for the choir Well I started singing Gallic when I was really really an open of a professional musician and often lose the different things enough adjudicator that the mode since I was 20 something and Dame I've seen the governor that choir on stage and action for all of these years and then the previous conductor and I instantly spooked that he was leaving and they were looking for a conductor so I've really old is willing to in my hearts to conduct a Gallic quiet but there was never an opening so I applied and that was it did you just leave a post below saying I'll do it or as a lot for well I can't really write that a member of the chill sequence events but I did a play on Facebook to see I was interested Yes it's amazing isn't it then they interviewed to me calamine this interview to me but he didn't know who I was some of them but some of the choir members who had known me for many years because I used to accompany lots of at least one footnote so I had the jungle John. Roland and they and eventually I got the job and here you are 4 years later still conducting 4 years later yes heading into a home more as it were really yeah you know the 1st one in Glasgow Yeah 29 years must be very special being at the helm of the it's very space I don't actually it's actually old with spatial what I could with I call them the guys and gals a golf and. A that a great bunch a huge age group and the choir from maybe stuffed to something really up to 80 something and I believe you have actually in the quiet moment we've got about 40 on there just are. Yeah 40 i'm are hearing that $35.00 or so songs I can identify for the love until a bargain and sanity at the moment for the push to be amusing and so how are you feeling the preparations coming along at this point Yeah well yes it's ready Those are just the boredom of it but this year song this year's displayed song has had many challenges that are lots of people in the choir who don't read music Clint Lee and to do and read Gallic fluently or speak out that Clint Lee So there's a lot of the landing I do rehearsal cds a rehearsal recordings that people have on their phones and the content of Dyson sales by listening to me on hopefully a daily basis and a delay on the stuff like that and Madeon Creek who is our galaxy tutor she does the same with the Gallic so they listen to the Gallic as whale and we are here so over the year excellent you mentioned you the hairs over the year I'd imagine you probably to have seen an awful lot more leading up to it on a somewhat next week yes we have been doing Mondays and weight and stays since after the summer yeah I get a couple hours on a 3 over and I want to in a bit do that yeah so tell us where you the hair so well but it hasn't Partick souce church on a Wednesday that so mean place but when you go into Monday hair cells we do the galaxy school and. You see if your best singer a roomful looking at you just know you know you know. Something I ask you to work the study after. You know what you can do not know the answer that well yeah it's looking back. We're talking with the confidence aspect and then to the more you know the choir or hearing but some pieces this evening of you to have sing and it's sounding fantastic but do you get nervous you know leading into the competitions in general Oh yeah yeah yeah I've been performing since I was really young and then performing for facially as Wale and I've adjudicators a c. For years but is much harder to conduct in that. Say No everyone gets the natives in the pit the stomach but once you get going yeah yeah when she would love to ask you but one of the conducting say to things because you know quite often the comedy is going to zoom in on the conductor and then you see the choirs and you know you're maybe pointing at certain aspects and making hand gestures and things and it's not something that you just you feel in you or is that something that you're taught how to lift voices you know quite how to lift a lot of total losses you know so on yeah but I was trained in that a long long time ago but I think I would say that I'm quite not shuttle from the hot clay ticks but I sit. And fact a I absolutely hate when I see the show of my feet. From the come to the back of the stage when I'm conducting up the love it but yes I think people are not in any just what I'm looking for when I can do you think you make a very real noise I make available. And you were saying you were taught years ago you know who teaches you those kind of things I went on to c.m.t. Right I mean say 40 years ago a soul this late in the musical training you get lots of different things conducting one of the things that you do under. Ever saying all these years later you'd be well yourself inquire into the more you know what I was going to sleep because it's actually quite special to me because my good Ani and grandpa who came to him from sky we can sync when they lived in McLean street in goven when they came to and from Sky So this is a sweet nice family connection Israel of course. Is good but I've been so many things in the Middle East is the 1st down that quiet that I've ever done it is quite a different experience. This . All along. 'd RINGBACK the the. A a a team. Well and he gives me great pleasure to welcome Catherine MacDonald from the governor. Catherine you also the treasure I am indeed yes some the money lady. Tell us how you can vote for the choir piece coughing fit you know actually from Glasgow or government Depot No no no no I from dinner now and I was inquires from the middle of prime minister all those years ago all checks from the staff. Counting all the time and tell us what was like so you could do it was gala choirs and do not valid question to just store just ordinary school criers So when did the Gallic aspect to enter for you I joined the choir. In 1919 and I came with a friend of mine who had been in the choir for years before and she had had a 10 year sabbatical and then decided to join Su I was bought out a bit because having no Gallic at all however there was a Gallic we did it that's a galley teacher who went over words with you and Joy to Sat Irish is a very sociable clash certainly seems to be so far what I've seen from to the. Race is very sociable and was love it also failing the whole time and you know very happy which is all ecstasy so I joined in 89 and it was Stornoway was my 1st Mord and it was also the 1st year that there was any kind of recording done and conductor at the time Jimmy. Started us on the 1st song and we broke down and the light I saw began to flash raid and they gave up recording altogether. We sat a song called Al to achieve cash and blue halfway through I remember the song we sang along with it although by that time we had really vriend our chances we sang Kekela who like which of course is a run Rick so I'm also in the. Know looking back to all those years ago and story and here we are a number of years later and Glasgow and you're still here oh yeah she was in some changes in the choir over the years or yes I mean we even have gone through periods of will we just chuck for good I think our smallest number was 16 when years and we took a vote as to where they were just fold all together or on a good one and luckily we. Our numbers are good no we have about 45 on the rate just that I figure with a goodly number not of younger people kid are you noticing more younger people coming into the choir scene with the likes of the mods and and such like yes yes oh yes but with Well obviously there's more publicity for galley. Kitchen screw loose as terrific and from what age could it be the are you starting to see them coming into the choir we used to believe have a junior kind of govern junior choir but no no it doesn't exist anymore and so we know we actually can when they are a bit more mature. And. That we have a good to age range though we have we as you said Full can yes they have to use and there are some ways to use ice to the whale thank you for joining us this evening I'm very best seller of course I the Royal National modern It's all in plan Yes Fingers crossed yes me here. Was the was. Was was there was the there was. The was the roof of the. Come. Come. Come. The. Was. Well I know you joined by calum Angus McDonald from the a loveliest Calum you're the only man in amongst his baby a beauty so male Yes I am it's probably is not a percentage of the males make about a quote as will. Offend physiological number the ladies on that as men a fridge but it's true of many question you would just a mission to your left loose after school moved into the city or the. 971 when I left school and I condone for walk reasons like many others will attain Yeah I did you ever go back. Just a couple every year just for all this yeah but not long term they were hearing from some of the girls who have got Gallic and they are learning phonetically and they get the translations but obviously I need to speak yourself your 1st language Ters is a big help and I tip my hat off to these people who have to learn with a language chunk of you think. I've always been the singing I have without really doing anything about it until I was a bit 50 odd over 30 is that the yes and why exactly what got you into at that point was acquired musical Breda live in striven I was a chorus girl a quote nice girl bed at the time and I got a message from home actually you know my sis that I told well for never the weekend that somebody else who was a member of the choir from the same millage had been seeing get telemarketers to the choir were desperate for me and. There was only 9 members in the question is great choir then working on the joint and we have only managed one more day which was logs and after disbanded and that was me hooked so I then looked at our end on a couple of us that were members of. The govern why govern because I suppose you got x. Amount of different choir members to deal good different places that it actually is a Muslim went to Cumbernauld graphically from school that was hunting for them because more than live in the school grade I was working Glasgow and other time so it suited me to go to one of the Glasgow class and there the chap was looking for our quiet had previously been a member of govern so he just pulled me along with them you never know if by going to look back no that's terrific news I'm asking obviously everybody confident in your feeling ahead of the more but beginning of garlic speak and listening to the Gallic and the choir all coming together real head of an experience that there's not in yours that actually and being I had a. Somewhat younger brother by my thumb and I still. Some of the for incisions but that's true of any island dialect really so you have to go with whatever's put across the quietest announce really absolutely whole thing exactly the same way and it's not real new in that it had a galaxy hardasses that was beautiful galaxy I don't know you. Will be joking of course the gist of the wind up you know is a good we have a good lot of it actually yeah there's always I love the camaraderie between the aliens and who has the Nexus Gallic out of the experience usually things are logic so I mean he was if you perform them yourself Well there's some solo work as well I think I joined 15 years 15 years since I was in the governor quiet and yeah and there's a president for the what was in peace between 2000 thought in. One traditional gold medal so I was I think you have to give him a huge one but there's also this in the quiet when the love of lost to 2013 was a big big one for us Governor I was going to see about you probably remember the couple weeks Yeah well it was hectic and I actually was there it was my 60th vote there as well that it. Was incredible I mean did you see that the gold medal was probably one of the highlights of your well your singing but one of the highlights of your life looking back musical you know absolutely that there's you know it cherish it made it much of it who does it have played the police always on the display cabinet. Well hopefully there's more medals in the display cabinet after next week and it's relevant to like you very much for joining us of Ok the Law Thank you very much 2 years. Old. Oh. This will this. Is for to be this way. Which. We. Did. You are listening to take the floor here to b.b.c. Radio Scotland with me God he and his next weekend will be having a good old leather with a government gala choir and I'm going to let it be joined by mighty Mackenzie are better known in the Gullah community as Mahdi or Dane for you could even muddy have even better bail thank you thank you for joining us you've a you've got a captive audience sitting there Are you a little nervous yes. I am indeed do you think you'll be this nervous come performing in a couple of weeks how they wash do you think so do you have any advice as how do you know I do is that something as always happens here with all the everything in life or just sitting or well listening particularly he's always been absent competitions of the anything that gets you over it no after it's over yes. Yes Fridley from Italy Mattie was from Louis but I was brought up in Grade 3 apart from getting there what I spent a year and a half in Louis right okey and sued did your mom dad speaking Gallic not all the time no I did not want. Having both well I did grow up with both languages I'm not as fluent as I should be but I have Gallic good I mean we're talking about some of the pieces you're performing at the more this whale Are you happy with the choices that Katniss chose next year oh yes yes we all like the steering Israel Yeah well else can I see oh that's great. I know it's it's really nice like it. And I said enjoyment how did you get involved with a government God quire 962 there Clyde was in a city in the vision recruiting members and a friend of mine from out to Madison she was a galaxy and she said we have to join goven And I said couldn't possibly you know I couldn't be good enough to join a choir and she dragged me along and I was very apprehensive and I loved it sat I don't know what go I mean you've been there's this thing yes i would you see maybe the longest standing of a quiet New Amanda McArthur and I join the same yes the month is out right yes so you're really old nice you're both going in India he's going for that well with all those years experience behind you as well let's talk about some of the other modes or any kind of memorable ones or ones that certainly stuck out for you well one sticks most is the 1962 March because the choir had been last the a before and it was in a prestigious and gain some you may members young I was young ones and younger people who are still very young and just now you've given me love the quiet you know joined in the summer well loved illicit limbed all my stuff and we went to the moat and we won the love and tell a bob and small Scriabin a competition and it was brilliant celebration and open was it open it always be special since and I bet you had that that was a fantastic night and we sang for concerts that night because it was not caught in holes in so it was a concert in a chair. Troll not a concept somebody else too has this as have Popeil of these things well they incredible we know the mode started back in open and the 890 s. But it always seems quite a special place to put it when the tarnished it was a Highland tabby Yeah you know there's that that feeling about it that they knew of a modus Absolutely and they enjoy it we dose of you when you are belong to and really enjoyed singing and performing and who other towns and villages are set these of course well when I was younger there were lots of associations all abilities all the tyrants had Highland associations everyone invited and we had gigs and now puts on a hook and Buddy how most in Highland afs Del Mali you know but we also sang a calumny and the pan celtic face to fill twice we won the telly baton and we're saying over by the comb we have a scan Eclat compete in Killarney and we are say couldn't and the next year we decided to go under their own steam maybe money or sales I mean were over and we won amazing what experience that was always had just I bet you had was that lovely and what year was that 197073 and 70 feel it has undergone a bit in the Coleman I was saying and I still say nothing the quiet that wins is in the move to the pan celtic face still so you might be making a bee to tar next year you never know you never know indeed have a bit of ice well from his own he didn't think the whole of Israel we were the very very best of luck on cue. The oak Oh man. How. How. The. I pulled. It Off. Was. Old was. Coming. Out. Of the. Oh. Well the party continues here for the government gala Cryer last but certainly not least I'm joined by a few without Ross Good evening hello Gary how are you very very well get through it I'm asking of you where you're from so please tell us where you're from this evening Glasgow born and breed my dogs have ever is from Sky and my mom's from Campbelltown So I've got a kind of mix mix hated to judge I was absolutely So how did you get involved with a choir Well she wouldn't be here if it wasn't for governor Gallic choir because my mom and dad mate and they govern Gallic choir there you go easy years ago. I remember my dad's always got mediated moved on and had to play in one day and there was a choir singing and I thought a guard and I was like Well one thing in a choir I want to say and it was actually a recording of Governor singing it a my mom and dad went and the quiet that point but they said oh well we'll go along and I went along so I was. 16 or 17 at the time that was in 1980 my 1st mode was didn't in 2000 I'm using There we go here really old right now we 3. You got involved in the gully choir really through your mom and dad. Grew up in Glasgow. There was a guy like getting just say up and I remember my mom saying that Kay and I had phoned to ask if she would say does there but my mom to say did it was too far away for because bigger Mogae it was too far away from a guy so we didn't go through me so aim it was just because Academy I went to so it was just really Galligan music through. He would try and teach me about I would rather get employee or do my homework rather uncertain learn something else but never really great no no I haven't done that but through the quiet I've been able to kind of pick up Gallic I've got myself a card because they do the Gallic tasting. It was over card and I've also been doing so was number one the silver paint in 2016 in Stornoway reference so that's the kind of competition for. So through the choir and there's been loads of opportunities through the quiet Israel I'm a bit of a quiet and total put at the moment is also saying with Tarbert look Fane I've been to pan kill tickets and sang with a Buddha and a mouse a sighing and a Univision choir. I was about it was amazing it was just a good experience and again I wouldn't have had that experience if it wasn't for Governor Ehrlich Choir which is we started my choir career all those years ago Years ago I told this year to the special year for the government gala choir is going to be 90 this year I don't think there's anyone in the choir that's been there for the film and do you know. There's a few that are maybe remember Georgie that Mattie MacArthur in my to make in z. They've been in the quiet of a long tell you man and they're still going strong so. A big party planned and of a member going to Gallaudet are just taking a celebrity so lovely so if anyone wants to join us for the week Elian a whole day jali than just give us a we call you me now you've won the solar panel are you going to maybe go on playing the gold I would love to but I just always say that if ever win for the gold I would have to be able to be confident to be asked anything like and be able to serve with a kind of start to thing or having to look up my daily section at ysu because I work shifts it's quite difficult to get a Gallic classes so I'm kind of trying to teach myself and use my dogs and things so my Galaxie not there yet but if it's something I'd love to do You could be I mean I think that it's not something that we should just touch upon as you will be lots less than a good girl it or not for a girl like by going to but they can join you squires and they can learn to you know if they want you part require or. Singing group you do as I say you know he said we have to have Gallic Yankees would go a Matty in our gallery Joshi exactly hate to see things there's plenty of people in the choir that speak Gallic who would be quite happy to take any of helpful aim with their pronunciation and things like that maybe take another section so and we've had people from a ticket and the choir we've had people from York in the choir so we've had people from all over join the choir and you don't have to have Gallic helps but you don't need to yeah tell me what you love over the choir it's like a family and just just like any family have good times and bad to him space and they're out to the Mord But it's it's just a he community and it's not just your choir it's like you meet all the other choirs and you make friends with the men and just if I wasn't in the choir I would probably have a lot can of a lot smaller can afraid chips or call is like the number of people that I knew going to through the choir through Gayle them and things that is just getting and again wouldn't have that with a choir so it's good to just how you city week it just can't have builds friendships and things and so it's really really good thank you very very much for joining us tonight i miss you we can't publish it there any more luck from us all here to take the fork you very much like manky the her. We're done having a. Bit sort of me. Because. Well we're back with the conductor Katherine Callandar cousin let's talk about the stage we are what you're going to be leaving for the big event Wells' a man this year they're still getting their own kilts that one tartan So we've got a nice spirit of color on the stage but this year they're going to be weeding not Twite shirts it's becoming more modern and sheer saw which this species is not really school or home. Yeah every was looking no no not not sure what this is they're letting saying Ladies we're at tartan skirt the warrior tartan which is a very lovely purple color and is quite distinctive and a they have purple fleece is not Do we have that on the stage but it's already purple Yes it was lovely excellent new details about the pieces that you are performing this year please well in love until a barge in the prescribed piece is called Alice to the Holocaust and it has 7 various cities and it's challenging challenging for many choir members and a everyone's been working really really heart on that I don't think we will be the only choir who is finding it challenging so that is the prescribed piece and I've kind of gone out on a limb a little bit with the own choice this year because we're not doing a traditional Gallic song. Without Chile doing a translation by Ken accountable Olva fo'c'sle mother Glasgow we really wanted to do something with a Glasgow theme because the mode was in Glasgow and just such a lovely feel to it that song written by Michael written by Michael Mata Yes I believe his family are very deleted that he acquired his Tikkun Olam and I've been and every inch meant for the quiet of that song so we're looking forward to seeing that I'm forgetting that some of it goes flying. I'm sure about oh yeah I know you were talking about you have 35 people in the choir you have more than that at the moment how did you start working it don't live here till you got that takes over there's a lot and lots of bits of paper and registers and trying to make it as fear as possible and of course we do have to have 7 gold card holders on stage as whale so I. Gold cardholder being someone who's fleece you know and yes so we are just on the edge of that that's the 1st place to go yet but then I really try that if you're not in the love until about to get in the push to be Ok So everybody got a performance saying they're cute because that must be a terrible decision to own a bill yes hold a bill but say has to be done. And actually it's I think it's easier when you have over 40 rather than if you could stand 6 people which happened to me one year so someone had to get through it yeah well which is really hard to put Did you have to ask for volunteers or but you just have to pick somebody on the edge of the village . So a Yes I just had to pick somebody but as fairly as possible but this year they said to 5 a good number Well Calvin is a saver account Russia and he would lock in a bottle thank you so much for joining us and let us part of your rehearsal to me is our sort of thing of so what you're tell you but if you want to thank you very they want you to be fair they enjoyed it cheers. Must. Have. The. Oh. Was. A.
