Music introducing van I the waves and I would wonder which is the 1st of 4 tracks. Stuart tell us a bit about the band 1st and foremost your old childhood buddies aren't you and I just far as I know how long have you known each other since primary school school school we live in the same town it's hard not to know someone. And so what did you bond on then I mean how long have you been making music together since again like since the start high school we've been in a few different bands very different. Human shame Let's have a couple of school band names did you have any cork in band names the worst of the I wanted to call it a tribute to music. Beautifully pretentious. A tribute to music Axl I was kind of stuff are you playing and was it kind of public or the reason it was a tribute to music is because it was covers and I mean. But it wasn't pretentious it was actually the truth. So yeah I'll leave that with you anyway van I've long has that been a project then because you've obviously taken it very seriously its heart felt music how long you've been doing. Been writing a lot of music on his own and came to me when I was producing music as well and I think the 1st track we worked on was quarter like a couple months ago. Sure now I have I've seen somewhere that you are a well kind of self-taught producer but also says you keep pianists Yeah what what is this is the key method. Person to tell you do you learn by ear and so that's the general gist of it. You also learn how to read music. To get that OK OK Well leave it there the so you had some songs chord changes. Kind of brought in the production underneath you yeah I think. Our process is very much there in the same room together time and just. Star as a song will come in and work together and bounce ideas and I'll tweak a bit and send it back and they kind of did develop from there and hopefully sound better by the end and what about you know the sampling in the cut and paste of V.H.S. And family tapes and where does that come into it because I find it really interesting but don't know how you do that I think it's like since we import all the audio from tapes they've actually gotten so lost in our computer almost don't even know where they came come from anymore. A lot of our tracks have things like choirs that may be in an old family video that we've got a couple of elsewhere playing I was just about to. See feature as yeah child and saw that when she was in positive there's a piano made up of her playing the violin when she was 9 years old I think and so we made a piano of the file and it isn't a positive for us and one I find that really really interesting in the lyrics kind of to do with that as well does it tap into some memories and I think. We don't focus too much on being a concert band I guess but it tends to be right in like in reference to these so of materials and our own personal experiences. Well for the 1st track that we just heard that song on the new E.P. And there's another E.P. Which is I right now have on vinyl. What's the kind of plan over the next few weeks and months because as far as I know with this new E.P. They've either been inspired by or written in different locations around Scotland Yeah we kept it in this way whenever you go somewhere abroad to get the same question like what's good to do the kind of dawned on us that we had actually seen the last call and so well the last 2 years we've been going around trips in vans camping or cycling and we went back to some of the places that we'd been. So where are they then I have them written down somewhere Ben Nevis yet we were not doing so as it was. It's all just terrible weather like we were so unprepared we don't have war perhaps and there was like a blizzard at the top it was going to tell me recorded a track at the top of Everest we got the samples that were it was so hard to like get any electronics out in the weather and one of us had like a festival point Joy as there were bridge it was it was life and one place people warn you against things like you know go up Ben Nevis when it's bad weather. So yeah OK Ben Nevis you survived it thank goodness and Fingal's Cave Yeah that was good fun the adventure. Yeah the rough we ended up among the night before and it was nowhere as open as a Sunday so we had to go to the pub for food and and they wouldn't give us food until the end of the day because you can book a table is full and on and so then we ended up ended up sleeping in the car that night as 5 of us slept in a car and go up the next day on a charge people across the fingers it was so worth it I suppose when we got most of our samples for the New be OK's in that cave and what were the other 2 locations as well done at the castle and I'm pretty sure. The beaches around there about me. Very pools are. Great where you really you saw a bit Scotland then I mean it's excellent Yeah well I tell you what we'll talk more about you know the E.P. That's coming out your tour date you've got some festivals and gigs coming up and stuff later on but I think we should have another track you know play another one off the new E.P. Yeah yeah OK what's this one called it's called friends OK friends and it's a band I see your own B.B.C. Radio Scotland in session for B.B.C. Music introducing. I think you are on. This if you. Are there we talk about whether the. Beaches are. Or they will talk about this. Or that there. the phil whom long long a friend in this day with cream in in Fantastic 2nd session track tonight from Van I friends just before I disappear from the studio and let you prepare for the next ones just a little bit of what goes into the the music obviously apart from your songwriting the samples what kind of influences go in there and hear little bits of almost like 2 step garridge these kind of things in there is well it's contemporary and yet it's got like you know the ancient sound of those samples and yeah what goes in there what do you listen to when you're going around Scotland there are still young so it's like music like you want to have that kind of sound when you play live. In it goes and. That's the. You got better technology is well it's got to like very sample Pads as well as kind of electronic kit laptop on the show good old fashioned violin there they'll says Well keeping it real well sounding great tonight thank you so much for coming in and we'll get you back in the 2nd half of the show and chain chat again right now OK I will plug those Festival Day So mention those and gigs and so on as well we're filming the session tonight the clips will be up on my Facebook page quite soon if you can't wait for that go to the B.B.C. Radio Scotland website go to the Vic galley pages and you can see all sorts of good stuff up there for B.B.C. Music introducing slime city appeal sessions say and Lucy amongst others up there OK vintage madness on the way after this this Thursday Paul McCartney joins us to celebrate the photography of his late wife Linda he describes her respective exhibition taking place in Glasgow and what she was like as a photographer one of the great things. People. Are strong born with Scott always. Losing Linda to the breast cancer. I think I cried for a bother you. I'll be playing some of the polls most loved songs and got sold on it was talking about a dream of just Ricky Ross meets Paul McCartney Thursday night from Night Ministry in the middle of a Radio Scotland interview on B.B.C. Radio Scotland. By the name of the man they call a. 6 foot fence just so. We. Course. Radio Scotland the prince Magnus celebrating the 40th anniversary. Single which not one single came out in 1989 and the album One Step Beyond the same same year one of my favorite bands of all time if it weren't for madness and Adam in the link I would be doing a certainly wouldn't like all the music that I like nowadays I'm looking forward to trying to catch them when they play a handful of Scottish dates as well they're playing Edinburgh Princes Street Gardens summer sessions 18th of August 23rd of August there and very nice at North Park not sure that one is but I'm sure Inverness listeners can tell me 24th of August their Montrose East links so madness and the prince here on B.B.C.
