Radio Scotland. 00. 4. Bald and pair show well done at 1052 and you came in with the correct answer for a name the place. And I knew it was too much to dream for that would get away for a 2nd week with no correct guesses so well done to you Bob and som of the wrong guesses that we have here Prestonpans done d. Miller's turn Kisa key square foot to the gas said Jack for governor and Blanche Wedderburn and Peterhead both suggesting Keith No that isn't the correct answer so let me give you a clue number 4 yes we are clear number 4 it shares part of its origin with the name of the village on St Cuthbert's way between Melrose and more battle that's getting quite specific you're going to have to know your way around the borders for that and Clue number one today's place name is in 2 parts one of which is about 500 years older than the other clue number 2 even the more recent part is no out of date Clue number 3 refers to the same occupation as Stewart and the obviously is where the penny dropped with Bob in Persia and Clue number 4. It shares part of its origin with the name of a village on St Cuthbert's way between Melrose and more battle so hopefully that will get here a bit more of a an inkling into where our name the place is today 80295 Carol Huff of course joining us just before 12 o'clock and Allan is back with us to take your calls hike and last an ecological puppy Listen I don't know why I said you know I don't know I mean if you had an animal Well animal would you be if you had played that game. You have played the game a lot harder No I think our average or do you think you were a Labrador Yeah. I gree. Yeah I've only been told of the rail path in the head you know generally quite so massive you know about. Some gas mean that for some reason I said in a heater and I don't know why but that's the 1st thing that came to my head that I'd be one of you know me. Better animal was an ant eater right yeah I don't know why I think like an Anita But anyway I digress and we got lots of calls in 4 years so we better get cracking with that just to remind you of the number it's all wait wait 59295. Text 8295 And so let's talk to Allison in. Sandra waiting as well and good morning Alison good morning good morning I cannot help. I have 2 beautiful dogs but one more than the other. It's just really quite annoying to take my floor if there's a bed anywhere nearby with the slightest. Of today that he'll find it and still run miles to get. Home and I'm taking he's constantly looking at me and by the kit car and just totally obsessed with the. And. Right what kind of dog is a how old is he and what's his name his size it's my will and you such I'm a shot at point Ok And so you're going to say a Labrador I was consensual. And. My lover don't have that and he does that's what has my always been obsessed with figure is this a new saying or you know or pretty much yeah I mean. We have another dog which is just off of a. Cheek score and she's also quite that people will watch Ok so I mean that is if I'm healthy otherwise any other medical and medical concerns around Vassar you know nothing at all I think and you know food obsessions one thing that quietly This isn't anything of any you know great concern this is probably just the Milo as any kind of food motivated dog and just late you know people you get different motivations Russian people and dogs are the exact same something almost certainly from Iowa if he just likes food nuts or he's obsessed with that's fine and important thing is to you know that beacon of detrimental to his general kind of well being or has we you know his position in your household are things that I mean is he at all I grace of our own food as he saw. The taste of that little bottle if you decided that you know if the children have chocolate they have to hide it they can't leave that line of shit anyway but of course that's a baby for dogs so. Very careful of that but. It's just concomitant Kingfish. Never get enough Allison. Have tried to give them a bit more of a don't that doesn't make any definite sense that I don't want them to feel that we are not to want to. There's no new There's some dogs are more interest in food than others and you know there probably are some dogs do have you know far greater opportunities than is actually required like metal or no dogs do like food we will eat more than the poor actually require So I think I was important as you know you know how. It's kind of calligraphic requirements are for the day how much food he should begin and you don't care if it's way beyond there if you are going to give him other bits of food or if he's going to get it make sure it's kind of no high in calories so maybe rebuts a catarrh or things that are kind of you know less calories for him would be the right thing to do but I think if it's not causing conflict or aggression with your other dog in the house there's probably no I. Must have problem I don't know how you feel about it but I'll prove to be too concerned is it just annoying Allison more nothing else yeah well it's annoying the most annoying what I've heard well. Takes also because he always would say that some we are eternally to them for quite some time until he same and so is looking for the income you know maybe a wee bit of what he that kicks in that doesn't across at all. As he sees it all could've been that kind of thing. Yes just. As interesting is one of these things that can seem almost quite minor but in some ways it could it could cause residents like running across roads in that are diets that claim to be society diets that's the word they use for their men to make them feel fool for longer so maybe one suggestion if you really you know if you want to try something would be to chime on one of the society diets is meant to be set in the stomach and fill up a stomach and take a mortgage to digest and make him feel a floor for even longer but that being said I think we Milo it might be more behavioral rather than just the feeling of hunger Yeah that's what I was going to. You know how much is a hungry and how much is just a kind of almost puff Littlefield us all yeah yeah I think it you know he was regardless of who does it just because they go he was just to be safe we'll have the same reaction and. Yeah you got that bill but he's passed it to every other day the other way get yet nobody is completely perfect so does he talk to you. Oh you know it well we'd all been so here's the thing is well communication and they were talking to an Alice Listen thank. You very much thanks for filling in and I was interested that you said that some dogs are just food oriented and others are and I mean my my dog just isn't particularly you know I mean we could leave a plate of food you know on a table within a reach and she just wouldn't go in it and maybe his girlfriend if there's multiple dogs in the house that tends to be the food gets finished off than if it's just the one dog and there's less re-implementation but I think sram in that are you know these conditions in people where they actually never feel fooled regardless of how much food they eat and the probably has some dogs that has never been discovered yet but there probably isn't a confession dogs of imagine where even if they've been fairly fed they still don't have a hunger so this psychological components and you know probably a physiological component as well yeah though I mean a degree without it I mean always say to the kids you know never ever leave chocolate Your Honor and or or I'll eat it. And I just reminded of the takes the 1st text that I read this morning and I said we would come back to so I need to do that but we're going to come to Santa and money feast as well to have a chat Oh wait wait 59295 double but this is how can we communicate with a 15 year old cat who has gradually become quite decks he's quite chatty that we've always responded but now he doesn't seem to hear us can I add in that he has a condition where. He sneezed is and that was me that sneezed at I think and has a blocked nose he gets an antibiotic injection every few months which helps but he's back to being sneezy could this affect his hearing or the sneeze it definitely can affect his hearing so there's ageing that's what takes my eating Koofi so that you station troops at the back of the throat so your energy just connects to the back your throat by a narrow chip and people have a budget as well as in dogs and cats and that's the help can equalize the air pressure and dogs and cats every year and if there's any swelling at the back of the 3 or if there's any kind of nasal infection or dogs of problems with a. I think in general often that should give her some blocks and they can actually get more fluid kind of cooling in that area and that can actually compromise their healing so that any cat Let's say you know got problems sneezing it could be affecting the heating of the same same older cats often will kind of not fully lose their hearing as they get older so it might not Nestle be a can of these a 6. To 15 years old that may actually be a normal kind of loss of heating that could be happening. But there are probably things that can be done so certainly my business partners got a deaf French bulldog and he's taught the same language. Which is kind of kill and eat and you may not think about it but folks have the same say lives for dogs quite great detail you know in terms of how to get the sets and all least things that there are techniques in doing that and for cats the same street you can try and teach them same language so that would normally take the form of kind of reward based training so trying to get them maybe you physically going don't for you want to greet them and then coming towards you you give them a basket to try and reward them for that interaction and also maybe trying to develop ways and using less sounds to communicate with them so maybe one example it's been described as using a laser pointer to point that front of not in their face obviously but on the ground in front of him to get that attention so they look towards you and then get him to come towards you so these kind of ways of modifying your communication interaction with them and you can animals read your expressions I mean beyond sight I mean if you are smiling or you're kind of the can a bit grumpy can they read them I think they definitely can yeah I think the idea of image evidence for the snow to pick up on the vibe and you're kind of tone of voice and how you stand into that with a tone of voice if you're just going to do that or the big smile and I don't know there's a there's a study there keep it pro Adric admit they're not you think so yeah I think they would pick up on not interesting and sundries and one of his morning sandra model Good morning how are you this morning on science. Thanks good good how can rush help and they also have to talks to all projectiles. Cheatle to 2 hospitals and a 16 month you told the boss of We don't suppose that a pick but the younger one he came to us just in the last couple of months and when they don't booking he. Calls on the client then on his belly it's right there was Lucy Kahn It was just my white 2 shoes teased and so the child has to submit to the to the other dog the older dog August. And I just wondered what that meant was and short of it is being submissive and I just don't know daily What's a younger girl called Sandra it's just it's just the young what Russia says a lot of us longest so I mean in terms of chattering his teeth as a gruelling as he's doing or is he just tractors to what's in front of noises or what's he doing is just charging his teeth he's not making any noise right and is that any aggression between Rufus longest normally or any other. Unusual Dick do you please quite roughly I would 'd say with each other and I mean just sort of trailing each other as a place with a bit of on the hind leg actually saw. And I think Congress is a more dominant dog. Probably because he was 1st talking hard but then he doesn't seem to be this doesn't seem to be distressed in anything he just does this time with me while basically playing with a ball or something along the beach or something because really RW pushes himself into the sonde then she was just pissed charging so I had as a centrist and I think Sandra you're right I think in terms of I think that's almost always a submissive behavior you know in terms of this is the older dog he's been in the House who longer and probably this is reversed you know showing some submissive behavior kind of respect for I guess I mean this it tends to happen more often when they're playing with a ball or when there's some sort of interaction between them is that the the context that occurs and lives as a toy involved what you have to say on the season we get. A lot of ball he can't be forced or the ball and stuff like. This will go up 2 of them just just lie down in front of them on his belly and your son to just clear sight to see because for you the dog. I think is submissive behavior of the think is I think what he did I think you know that there always has hierarchy in your house that's kind of been established so if things are changing if it's not getting worse I really wouldn't be too concerned I think it's probably is just not shown a normal in your house. And Sonny talking about communication you know all this they it's this this does this on a regular basis in this in the situation he's communicating something isn't he you know he's definitely. You know respects you know. And that's that's good that's what's going on there all with even I think quite often the the problems that we see are where the hierarchy is more they are uncertain and the dogs don't really know where they are relative to other dogs in the house or indeed to the people in the house so. I think reverse these behaviors nothing to worry about. But it's good to know because we haven't had dogs for doing what we can have hearings but they seem to go in most. The time we need to cut all up together so it's nice to reverse it I guess and Sandra thank you very much indeed and time for one more takes if you don't mind at this is from the school to his my friend's poodle 86 am has had a 2nd attack of pancreatitis this year and had an injection from that that and mates buy most twice daily clearly still in a lot of pain and has to be catty different which in itself is painful for the animal any advice who see it is pancreatitis unfortunately is a serious disease and is not one that you can always predict how well or not dogs will do to get it so the progress is an organ in the body it produces enzymes that help digest food and are fortunate sometimes those enzymes can kind of leak around the pancreas the cause quite a significant amount of inflammation the scum for pain and often dogs have vomiting and diarrhea and really create significant discomfort in the tummy of the same things some dogs have a quite mildly and you almost it's quite difficult to diagnose other dogs are really acutely ill and it can be very very serious so I think a you know must go through the best ideas they can of get advice about you know what investigations have been done to see if something underlying that's predisposing the dog to get in part because itis often that are predisposing conditions he can cheat effectively and reduce the likelihood of it coming back but it often is a disease that to manage it bases of what with your hair and try to identify factors that are car goes into and try to eliminate them and manage manage it rather than cure it but manager effectively right so I mean it's a condition that you really need to. A lot of input and if you are unfit and there are quite a lot of resources that vets have available we should be able to give you a whole package ita says about why these things we're talking about like diets not being overweight about ruling or other disease why it's important to do those things Ok And we're all thank you very much indeed and pleasure to see you as always and so we'll see in a couple of weeks. An oral silent film it's. Previously on breaking the news with the day's Clark in the show from Judy Marty days and. Radio Scotland travel thank you very much for Tory Ed Sullivan 27 So are you the kind of person who likes to go with your gut trust your instincts how reliable is that we've. Come for all. What does is Daniel Campbell Meiklejohn who is a senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Sussex He's an expert in this field Good morning to you Daniel tell Ok Good morning and even expression to go with your gut where does that come from well Augusta feeling is a blanket term really for having a sense of something's about to happen without much insight have to lie it's there and of the physical a physical feeling it's a mixture of your emotion and their physiology so something's triggering that reaction and those emotions and their motions in your body reactions are already linked it's true and is strong enough to affect a choice but it's not quite a sort of crude indicator. Rather than something that you shewed you know inform your decision making with well it again it depends the context I mean it's the sort of emotional responses can be really handy shortcut to tap into all your experiences that you've built up over your life so that triggers may have been put there over the long time ago or it didn't have been learned over and learnt over many years or and or could you get on board with it. Before you start or it could be something you've just sort of happened just recently as you might have experienced positive experiences when you when you've hung out with a good friend for example had to you know the good things about having her have happened before in the probably happen again when you when you start seeing them mean to anybody even before you even before you meet up you start to experience those positive feelings of again and advance and brain start to predict and prepare for those experiences so our brains our bodies are always trying to put the what happened next so we can prepare for it and that's my take on what your gut feeling of so what about unfamiliar situations and unfamiliar people that you don't have any and sort of back story to to rely on and you know you will often hear people say oh I didn't like him her from the all or I go. Good feeling. Isn't based on anything is it what is to be mean we may not have insight into why we're having that reaction we don't know why or having their reaction that we are having it on their bodies are pretty smart to most likely their qualities or the context in which meeting them is related to a positive experience or a negative experience you've had in the past to start with your mom and sort of go from there all the people you've met for building up all these different associations you need be may not be able to put your finger on why because we can't really hold all the reasons why in our consciousness we just have this memory that kind of in our emotional and physiological reactions to high reliable is your gut instinct. It depends on the context I think so in the So we have. I'd say if you or it could be quite reliable could there represents a learning over your whole lifetime of your emotions guided decisions and emotions are tied to your experiences and you learn to react to certain things at a certain way but. And that's a big bite is there a certain context when they can lead to in the wrong direction I think most importantly is that is when someone else is trying to manipulate you or put a reaction in into you that was necessarily learned by some as they've done deliberately try to look in a contest see talking about their then. Because advertising could be political campaign. It could be. To say so it's a match and so a campaign is trying to get you to vote against your own interests. They may not always keep the time to hit the facts campaigns are normally do that so instead they might make their candidate reminded of something trustworthy. Even if you know nothing really about that individual other messages might appeal to what we call implicit biases. They may use certain ways of speaking that trigger. You know a sense of trustworthiness or it could be or they could sort of or they get stuck a rational fears for example you know you had for example that's a great a dark cloud triggers a reaction that oh it's going to be kind of a grumbly day it's not going to be talking to a great and when you see a dark cloud you start your body such prepare for that run day and then let's say as someone puts. A candidate or their opposing candidate in front of a really dark cloud and suddenly you're having that experience at the same time interviewing the other candidate hell you know say a political campaign and follow you out of a new association with the candidate that grumbly feeling you to tighten just Alec . So how sophisticated does that game because that we have. Seen in political campaigning particularly over the last shower I'm saying 5 years maybe that's as far as my memory goes by but you know increasingly in recent times and obviously we're in an election period no so we have to be very careful I would talk about this but you know whether that is here in the u.k. Or indeed across the world you know all of Sandy sort a simple messages being repeated and you know go back to them and go back to it but and they kind of almost stage situations Yeah it's all very kind of conscious because it is quite amazing to a certain degree we're aware that preventable doctors may repeat the same thing over and over again and yet and advertiser and but that one of the effects if you are exposed to something over and over again eventually familiarity. Sort of brings out part of the reaction to things or you start to consider to be true and so I have to be sophisticated I mean he might you know you may have seen around the park for example you know a picture by looking at you at the same time as I can about your dog or pictures of eyes on a train asking you to pay your taxes and for some reason you're more likely to pick up your dog or paragraph that if you see that I have but that number to scare off no is no the signals are sophisticated but the thinking behind presenting us with certain signals is as sophisticated I think it is. I think if you're the real question is why and can your gut instinct be a methylated if actually when they have any other advertisers know your psychology that part of any of their At the time are or you know have time to think about it that particular time in it and we have a lot to think about. And they have cared about. And I and the psychologists and does the the way the world is organized and particularly I think in terms of the media that we are not subject to to those probably don't what but you know once upon a time I'm going to be to remand to sizing a little bit but people would perhaps read a broad sheet. Newspaper they might read you know fairly lengthy and columns or discussion pieces where we seem to have come to a point that we would take it we're bombarded with information from these different sources and it tends to be the kind of bite sized does that make us more susceptible I think so yes this is I guess this is why it might be called for kind of being in a contact group costly in a context where they are relying on quick choices and fast thinking where slow Thank You may have led us to a completely different choice. So I mean to be mindful of that I imagine is a good thing how do we remain mindful of that yeah well I mean I think I think it's important to remind ourselves that sometimes our gut feeling is our test a product of years of learning and experience and so when someone's not trying to manipulate you they can actually be really quite accurate. But you can question away that feeling comes from when it doesn't matter at all for example like making your vote or spending your money. And so you can be mindful of I think it could be a good situation might be off when a political can bring topical times now and when someone is giving you a message you can just ask yourself what message are you seeing how is that message constructed what happened just before that message present and what after what happened afterwards What might someone on on on the campaign planning side of Preval or the advertiser be trying to do what kind of emotion and they trying to get it out of you and is that emotion something you really want to have. It is so it can be a good thing and over evolution and insular times yes I mean there are those things to be quite accurate but if you suspect somebody is trying to persuade you of something. And they're trying to make you feel scared of something it or making a feel of really fond of something or someone you don't know then maybe just don't listen to every. Little thing can I think. Probably quite a good thing Daniel thank you very much indeed Daniel Campbell we call Joan senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Sussex also runs a social decision lab if you suspect that some of these trying to persuade you of something this is a good suspicion because everyone is always trying to persuade you of something I think Laura Maxwell is here to try and persuade you to stay this ning after Kate asked to us at 12 o'clock absolutely sell another nuance is that I'm not going to manipulate people because that's horrible There's nothing worse than feeling that you've been manipulated and I wrote several things day in there taking advantage of manipulating feelings that makes you date yourself and the other thing I put a big bubble is it any wonder I've got perfection paralysis put it perfection paralysis that seem to think I am increasingly more on able to make decisions because you're so aware of the fact that there's people out there trying to manipulate you so you're always trying to weigh up the pros and cons manipulate or trip you up. I would say manipulate trip will get a bit deep thought of not use the deeper you try to trip me out of the crazy as I have to go and so we never get deep No it's an interesting one no I don't hate feeling as if somebody is manipulating me and everything I was talking about just made me crazy yeah you got coming up at 12. Hours is a bit more simple than that actually several charities in Glasgow were urging that the city council to help get the city's winter shelter open earlier this year and I don't know what temperature it was whenever you can to work this morning I scraped the windows and it was minus 6. As we'll be asking if there's anything we can do to help if we see somebody out sleeping rough or we think that they're homeless and we'll be chatting to people who've been in that situation and a charity who are also helping those who are out there experiencing the very cool weather at the moment we'll also have the latest from Hong Kong I don't know whether you've seen the pictures coming out of her and I thought we were going to have a chat about that just those well I have to be there last week just coincidently I heard that yeah so I was a very unusual where you wear or is it in certain pockets of the city it's in certain pockets but it's very difficult as you know a visitor to the city to anticipate where it is going to be in a somebody explained it to me clearly the protesters want to have visibility and so they are protesting in places that people are you know it's bizarre I've been I've been to Cancun before and you sort of look at the city and you know what's happening you're thinking gosh I couldn't ever have believed that would happen there but there we are and we're also going to talking about dementia and most of us have heard I think of Alzheimer's but what about the other types that are for different types of dementia most people struggle to name any of the other to be talking to somebody who has vascular dementia and here how she's trying to cope with it and we'll learn about what the differences are all of that coming up it's not all quite serious so we do have city or you've got city the voice of city on the wireless that's a difficult one it's sweet not receive that little clip of sweep the. Well you can sweep under the hammer What would. You do the thing no right Ok there's nothing you can really be sweeps weeks and really doesn't say anything so it's a difficult one for radio but we'll get there good luck with that well you know you got to listen for that silent radio it's a new thing that's going to catch a lot of mics will be here at 12 o'clock today she will be silent just before 12 o'clock Professor Carol Huff will be here she'll do the big reveal or name the place I have given you 5 clues thus far may just chuck in the next one for good measure in front porch saw is suggesting unison balls will call Marna is more different often suggestion bonus Jim Philly's come to can you come look says Helen Holmes says Vicki and galaxies and galloping through all of those just so that you know where is nor And so if you fancy a lost little gas then you knew not to go to dun d. For instance Tom Clark and John Wilkes says dandy It is not done the the final clue is it is mentioned in a play about Scottish independence issues that ask who they ever got I don't what it is 8 to 95 is the text number I'm back here tomorrow from 9 and a Secret Santa stress you out apparently it does cause anxiety for millenniums will talk to the workplace psychologist who says we need gift giving guidelines. From a chronic skin condition that left him host boned to a world champion e-sports game or I'm going to speak to young Scot Liam McCarron the court of Catherine will be inspirational Lordy what she's up to know and who yes the question should be asking should I send my daughter to a weight loss camp or is she old enough to decide for herself we don't know what age she is doing probably 47 knowing Karen 81515 I have been informed 80 to 95 or you can email Kate bbc dot co dot u.k. And has. Social media change the game when it comes to political advertising in the general election that probably fits in quite nicely with a gut instinct conversation that we were just having. Mentioned a few times that this morning I happened to be in Hong Kong last week on our left over say with the time difference whole call time and just about midnight on Sunday night. And as it happens happened to be in a hotel which was overlooking the whole call Polytechnic where a lot of the trouble has been centered over the last 2 or 3 days so I spent a lot of time. Just standing observing what was what was going on and you know trying to make some kind of sense of it as a as a visitor to the city I mean a very distressing to see it's a wonderful city that I really enjoy spending time in Amman has been going on for a long time the protests started in June and against plans to lay extradition to mainland China because critics fear that that would undermine judicial independence and danger dissidents that Bill was withdrawn in September but the demonstrations have continued those involved no demanding full democracy and also an inquiry into police actions and over the last few months Western media have covered the events going on b.b.c. Spoke to protest hours. If China trying to get their face hot you have to fight for . What they are some pretty tough call from wrongs but I would say that most had our culture if the most remote friends I want to have to do to defend your health care policy there are as if China all seem to say that cost it was thought of to work out. So the future of home call Vicky warm is worth those who is the associate editor for coconuts Hong Kong Good morning Vickey. Morning Hi Thanks very much for joining us and we're also joined this morning by Fred Mack who moved to the u.k. From Hong Kong in 1978 but his daughter is living in Hong Kong Hi Fred how are you how are you fine thank you good good thanks very much to both of you for joining us this morning Vicky you're based in Hong Kong at the moment yes yes yes yes so is the situation at the moment. The situation is the standoff that according to the rest is still ongoing a couple of people have only about 50 protesters have already surrendered a 100 themselves over the police and that maybe there are a couple of but can the people still left standing there inside campus and others are talking there are people heading out onto the streets in what is an area close to the university in a bid to try and cloak least away from the campus so that those protesters inside can escape this could possibly be the last day that standoff as right and you know 2 will come you know when the standoff is as it where I mean will there be any resolution. Well you know. It's very hard to I can't think so highly of our leaking from being perfectly honest really hard to say. And we will what is the level of public support within Hong Kong I don't know if you had me mention an advocate but I just returned and you know I tried to talk to as many people as I could just to try and gauge the feeling you know just as a casual visitor and the majority of people weren't really up for talking about it to be honest it was almost a sort of feeling of resignation and it felt to me. You know clearly and this is just casual conversations I'm having so I'm not trying to say is an accurate picture and though I did on our last day we got caught up in some trouble and. Chili and we had gunfire and you know we felt the tear gas except when we had to make a run for it and we we did speak to one young protester. And she was incredibly passionate about saying you know this is home culms last chance to try and sort of carve a some independence for itself and you know clearly she I mean she used the expression will fight to the death. So yeah I think I think. Well I think of him all about the protests about these protests that if you compare it to the umbrella of the little 2014 protests that we've nonviolent peaceful and ultimately didn't succeed in delivering the protests in one case. The protests that he see now . That well the police the police or solution can work so we have to you know we have to run to doctors who are there and although we speak to even people who are kind of on the moderate side on the perfectly side they're not supporters of like a violent violent actual day but they do kind of understand why the protesters have been driven to that point and we speak to people. In even if they feel even if they feel like the protests have caused some destruction to their life they do you kind of feel angry and believe that the government is almost have to rein in anything else because the way they've had they've really misjudged this them really mishandled it well I feel that the government should be most a plane because they don't like August but all focused escalation. I mean there is a lot of focus on the protest behavior and I believe they want to be known as protestors rather than rioters and I'm interested in the messaging that we're getting here because a protest is very different from from a riot but for me just what I mean a lot of them are so young. You know 1516 year old young people you know that they're dressed casually in their trainers and the t.v. Shows with their umbrellas and yet this is the sort of force of the police looks military like I know it's not military but I mean my goodness they've got the Fuquay on it seems a bit David and Goliath. Yeah yeah it does and I I mean when I when I spoke to the day the protests slated fast Berkow snaky mid June 12th and I remember speaking to a lot of the protesters on the site and most of them were university students and I'd be asking why you hair and a lot of them will say well I was plenty about such when the umbrella movement happened and I didn't do anything so now I feel like it's my responsibility to come out and say something witty something. Thread however you feeling about it and I as a former home county resident and your daughter is still there. You had just the right teaching in Hong Kong this moment of time. As a former Hong Kong rested in a state of residency of Hong Kong I feel really sad leaving greedy that the city I love so much in prototype is totally the landscape as to that it changed. I understand the political landscape has changed and I also support full of the same ocracy and freedom but are totally against the violence has been deployed Hindu Smoove and to be honest with you it takes on the couple to any society thinking thinking people who for in touch upon to be over 3000 on one night in u.k. If students in Scotland throwing petrol bomb 1000 of them into Glasgow at them burst out this holiday of how they found he will react to it just imagine you are the authority in a truck bomb can kill someone easy vocals and paste them into a ball and narrow in use shooting at people not only a police shooting at you not on their firing in a pet shop in full and somebody going with them to you know 50 to 50 percent of the whole point even some of them just might have to pull and how is your daughter feeling. She's caught in the middle really the I mean. She sit on one hand you support this like that the one on one hand you support the the sort of freedom movement but this you know I agree with her bobbins the degree of devolving to being put into it I mean you said they are the optimist a mother of young but the To me the problem now we start with the British How far can just the treaty the treaties the trick appointed to the problems a lot more people to do is down to the economy situation. That was so expensive young would continue. And also a lot of the demonstrator now very young some of them just born or one after the $97.00. Are now going to turn the child up so there's a lot of a lot in your plate between different parties and with the current social media a lot of people just need to leave what he said what he saw in the Internet which is totally wrong because a lot of them is true both sides here I mean one thing I'm I'm curious vacated to know what you think about this and there's been a lot of reporting here about some of the violence as Fred said and you know some of the protesters throwing petrol bombs there was a bow and arrow used that you know there's been some really. You know violent acts Well we don't get reported and certainly the young protester that I spoke to was she alleged that there had been considerable aggression on the part of the police which does not get reported. I think discover why a lot on this sort of media in and and Well why do we honestly like police or the police officer are there police by. Go to watch their demonstrator and that's totally wrong in them the police has been suspended over what disciplinary action I do not support while and some from there. Well so there is accountability I mean again the protesters that I spoke to said that one of the demands was that the police be held accountable for their behavior and it was her belief that they were not being held accountable was the reality of that. We know how think any cases of cases conduct for instance just close offices being put into a man handling protesters and in events where if you want to file a complaint against the police officer you have to take note of that case number on the court of to the Independent Police Complaints Commission the problem is is that a lot of people is the go to wearing staff officer id so there is no if we can't id the office then there's no way for anyone to file a formal complaint and although the chief executive Terry now says that the i.p.c.c. Is the most appropriate way for them to handle case misconduct allegations there's been several reports from people saying that actually the i.p.c.c. Can't really do enough to address these issues right and in terms of protesters that have been taken into custody. You know do we know who's been taken into custody I mean are they being dealt with with Jude legal protests. A little patch I. Heard Also I've lost count of it this week it was confirmed that the number of people who've been arrested and taken the guy is about 4500 people call kind of a number of charges from taking part in an unlawful assembly to violating his p.f. Areas other things for it's been very hard to just keep track of where each of these cases are going and how many people being let go and how many are being formally charged right Ok so we don't know how many people are being held in custody you know and I don't have that number. Right Ok. What do you think where is this going Vicky do you think. Oh it's the $1000000.00 question we thought that this would and maybe about late June possibly only July where here it was tough a year later and it's still going on people are still incredibly angry and in carry on has already given into one of the demands which is to withdraw the extradition though for people on the pro-democracy side that isn't enough they want all of the key demands met I feel like if they at least gave into giving granting an independent inquiry into police conduct then that would ease some of the tensions but the authorities haven't given any indication that they're willing to do that for the protesters and those who just reminding people of the key demand that there should be independent inquiry is into police conduct that's that's one of them also that people who are being held in custody are released from custody I think not that's another of the demands is that right but ultimately that Hong Kong has an independent executive. Which is you know freely elected in a democratic way by the people of Hong Kong Yes and how likely is that. You know it's very unlikely and I think also the kind of what added to the sense there's hopelessness amongst the protesters is that one mention maintaining one country 2 systems until 2047 which feels like it's come it's not too far away but already it feels like there's kind of in some way question the stuff a lot of people feel like and a lot of question please I'm already in if you like when 47 'd is a meaningless. Anyway I will go get all those hot is controversial extradition which I did feel. Yeah yeah and they key Well we wish you all the very best we hope for some form of resolution in Hong Kong but perhaps there are still troubles to come unfortunately Vicky will associate editor for coconuts Hong Kong and Fred Mike thanks very much for speaking to us and oversee your daughter still in Hong Kong so we hope she is as well and it was a very interesting situation to be in the middle of an in terms of the police you know just wandering around a tourist market and to hear gunfire and see t. a Grass and being. Fired which obviously is no controllable substance and affected just anyone who happened to be. An auto maybe some scrutiny of that might be a good thing and right it is time for the baker if he you will name the place just after this. Catch up on the conversation listen via the b.b.c.
