Good to see the pm pm case in nearly a 100 days I think until today it was only ever don't want. Lee prime minister cause we all knew a long list of short comings. That things. Could thank. 2 goodness it is a case something about home that he does have some control of and get rid of Dominic Cummings. Is his big guy I think they'll. Try to reverse replies in the in the with the generosity of spirit to she would be as she would expect from me and just say the top I received excellent advice for a wide range of a vices and officials and it is the role of a buys is to advise and government to decide and I take full responsibility for everything either this government does. My right to move for and achieve what many said was impossible on the go surely did a new breakthrough. Shakos the prime minister share my regrets that many in the party opposite including the leader of the opposition to the Laos leaving with a deal on October the footy once again not least after what he said in this house on the 22nd of February 2016 that his party welcome the fact that he does not want to the British people to the side where were made. By my right elbow friend as so often speaks with complete good sense so I do think it was there. Markable thing that so many members of the house were able to come together last night and approved the 2nd reading of the bill I think it was a great shame that the house as it were will be end Mr Speaker but not the means but there is still time for the right honorable gentleman to do that to explain to the people of this country how did he proposes to honor his promise that he made repeatedly and deliver on the will of the people and get it done here. Mr Speaker he will enlighten us not fair to me. Thank you Mr Speaker I join others offered their deep sadness at today's news of 39 people being fired dead in a lorry container in grace can we just think for a moment of what it must have been like for those $39.00 people obviously in a desperate and dangerous situation for their lives to end suffocated to death in a container this is an unbelievable human tragedy that happened in our country at this time we obviously need to look at the whole situation and answers to what has happened there but also I do pay an enormous tribute to the emergency services who've gone to the scene to deal with it all of us who just think for a moment what it's like to be a police officer or a firefighter to open that container. And have to remove 39 bodies from it and deal with them in a program in an appropriate and humane way we should just think for a moment of what inhumanity is done to other put other human beings at this terrible night. Yesterday Mr Speaker for the prime minister decided to withdraw to delay his own withdrawal bill he promised to maintain. Let me finish let me finish . Decided to delay his own withdrawal I. If you care to look at hand side you'll see what it says. He promised he promised to maintain environmental consumer and workers' rights why then did the prime minister have these commitments removed from the legally binding withdrawal agreement. Mr Speaker I don't think we could have been clearer yesterday in our commitment to have the highest possible standards for workers' rights for environmental standards and and deed I think one of the things that brought the house together was the knowledge that as we as we go forward and build off your partnership with the e.u. Would always be open to members on all sides of the house to work together to ensure that whatever the e.u. Comes up with we can match and pass into the law of this country and that I think come on to the vote of support and a lot of assent across the house and I must say I find it peculiar that he that he now wants this bill back because he voted against it last night and he and he went and he whipped and he whipped his entire Labor Party against it and I think it was a remarkable thing that the house successfully defied defied his urgings and approved that deal what I think what I think we would like to hear from him now is his commitment to getting Brix it done that is what the public. And I'm afraid this is because they're worried they're worried that all he wants is a 2nd referendum. The prime minister doesn't answer the question I put to him which was about the environment of consumer and workers' rights and I'm not surprised because. I'm not surprised Mr Speaker because he once said employment regulation was backbreaking and he voted for the 2016 anti Trade Union Act which stripped away employment protections and the provisions in the bill of a no really. Protection I told you yesterday in the withdrawal agreement bill debate the prime minister pledge that the n.h.s. Was safe in his hands. Because that's the case will he be backing our amendment to dairy which would undo the very damaging privatizing so far only just I I. Mr Speaker I think I must say he's showing complete ignorance here Elaine Carvey's a complete failure to to study what we actually a passed last night tonight his story is not historic agreement it is it is very very clear that it is open to these heartless to do better where it chooses wrong out of all wealth has got its own social breakdown as indeed this country very often does the way we are we are we are we are a groundbreaker we are a groundbreaker Mr Speaker we are growing really great in breaking this according to the prime minister but I think given what we've just had a Latin phrase that we might come out of Prime Minister's Questions now we will return to the subject a little later in the program but scared to add more from the news now on the news now with Victoria Lumsden the 1st minister is joining up with her Welsh counterpart to oppose the Prime Minister's breaks that bill in a speech this afternoon Nicolas sturgeon and Mark drink for Dick use the u.k. Government of trying to rush through the e.u. Withdrawal agreement without detailed scrutiny Boris Johnson posed his brakes and Bill after the Commons rejected his plan to get it signed off in 3 days Nicholas sturgeon says M.P.'s need time to find a way forward essentially execution not just long enough to see signs. That early this is all we should remind you only a load of gin election or 3 or perhaps more realistically the former and leading to the last and that seems to me to be. Besides this next. Course we saw this in the long term this is a current issue even teeth you should see for ourselves breaks that uncertainty is estimated to have cost the Scottish economy $3000000000.00 pounds a year economists from the Fraser Valley and or Institute say growth has remained sluggish because of issues around investment it has lowered its forecast for growth this year to only one percent the institute's director is Professor Graham Roy some of that is likely to be delayed investment so some of the things that may come on stream if we get some resolution to them certain point in time but looking at where we are now realtor if we would have been it's quite a relatively significant to record I mean the body of a girl believed to be a teenager has been found in a park in Edinburgh the discovery was made to run 20 to 80 yesterday morning in King George the 5th park and on the city's Stone Bridge area police Scotland said her death was currently being treated as unexplained the Scottish Labor m.p. Ian Mari insists the party will lose in Edinburgh South if efforts to diesel liked him as a candidate in the next election are successful the Unite union are backing moves to replace him over his opposition to party leader Jeremy Corben a contest to replace a sitting m.p. Is triggered if a 3rd of local members or affiliated union support sets of its general to take place tomorrow evening. The number of times people needed compulsory mental health treatment in Scotland reached a record high last year the mental welfare commission revealed there were 6038 such detentions under the Mental Health fact rates of emergency orders used in a crisis of Riven risen most sharply among teenagers over the last decade. Off gem have rejected plans for 2 sub c.-k. Bills to take energy from the Scottish islands to the mainland the transmission link from Shetland in the Western Isles would have connected new wind farms on the island to the national grid in McKenna's as more that has been years of wrangling over plans for new large wind farms in Shetland and in the Western Isles it's long been argued that for the island's renewable potential to be reached new subsea kibbles would be required to connect them to the national grid but the regulator off Jim says that the failure of the major island projects to secure subsidies in the latest u.k. Government auction has meant they've been unable to approve the new subsea links of Jamesy however that they would welcome revised proposals time for the latest sports headlines now with folded like that little Thank you good afternoon everyone tributes are being paid this lunchtime the Scottish football's head of referees John Fleming has died at the age of 62 as f.a. President Rod Petrie says Fleming's commitment to the Scottish game was unstinting the right attitude dedication and commitment has brought Glasgow City to the threshold of a fair 10th successive Woman's League title sources the club's former midfielder Suzanne Lapin and after standing down as head coach Joe Schmidt says the planning for Iowans World Cup campaign was a self consuming monster which contributed to his team's disappointing to moment they were thumped by New Zealand in the quarter finals. Let's find out what's happening travel wise season Matisse's here thanks Laura in money to a 96 High Street to Elgin has queuing traffic near Plus card and road in Aberdeen a 956 Market Street has clocked up traffic with a traffic light failure at Union Street pair c 9 is busy but moving South Bend before Broxton roundabout and in Glasgow traffic congested in the a 7 to 7 it killed road with an extra 5 minutes to travel time West by and that's Newton it train station Cal might have cancelled bad a ferry cyclist sailings and Louis Freeh at service today when. Related delays or cancellations are also possible on other routes a short notice b.b.c. Radio Scotland travel time now quarter past 12 this is Laura Maxwell on b.b.c. Radio Scotland sitting in for John Beattie today coming up on the program when should you take your medication We'll look at a new study on blood pressure tablets which some of the risk of heart problems dropped by almost half for those who took their tablets at night and forget to the bank of mum and dad to we'll be talking to the bank of gran and grandad with personal finance expert Fergus Muirhead. Commenting discussion on the top stories of the day John Beattie on b.b.c. Radio Scotland. Where lots of talk about to general elections coming up before Christmas and the Scottish Labor m.p. In Mary has learned he's facing diesel ation as a candidate in the next general election he was Labour's only Scottish m.p. Between 20152017 but he's been a consistent critic of Jeremy Corben under party rules a contest is triggered if a 3rd of local members or affiliated unions back it let's find out what it all means and talk to our political correspondent to Andrew care Andrew m. Why is he facing the selection in the 1st place Yes good afternoon Laura Imari is a long standing load and purse critic of the Labor leader Jeremy Coburn and actually the in Mari is the longest serving Labor m.p. In schools and he was 1st elected back in 20 term he was the last man standing in the process in peace an army that swept through Scotland to new retained his seat then in $27000.00 he actually put on more votes in his constituency for labor than the other of $58.00 constituencies in the rest of Scotland combined so he is a prominent m.p. Well in the party but he does not get on well with Jeremy called he resigned to shall discover secretary back in 2016 really calling out Mr Coburn's leadership. And he's being of course supporter of a 2nd the referendum. He is a vocal critic of Jeremy Corbyn is that the only problem there is rather than any of his voting track record I think in a sense that almost does seem to be a personal issue here that the Unite the union are pro corporate and union of course led by a lead McCluskey people will be familiar with him he is of course very poor in a way that unites are almost gunning for even more here wanting to replace him before a possible general election so it does seem to be. Personal level of animosity between you and Unite the union when it comes to this because United are not doing this to any other M.P.'s in Scotland or actually it seems in the rest of the u.k. The this is being attempting to trigger there's a central level rather than even a local level and what is the unmarried himself had to say about all this yes I've just been speaking to him and he's been on the radio today as well he is really just saying how he has been a longstanding prominent m.p. How he works hard for his 80000 constituents and. How he does have that track record on has been point to go that actually if used to selected will. Be labor for a loan. Whatever decision to make about whether or not I would stand I think the constituents deserve to have a choice of candidates in front of them obviously discuss that with friends family and colleagues to decide whether or not I would stand if I was disallowed but I'm certainly I can guarantee that if the Labor Party decided that I didn't want to be a candidate in some hard left Marxist candidate will. Be damaging to Labor Party and indeed I think damaging to the country and their Laura is not facing diesel action yet it doesn't actually have to be triggered you do have to have the right numbers of Unite supporters the affiliate members in the constituency Labor Party to trigger that you Mary will be flying home tonight after being at Westminster he will be flying back at tomorrow night and he will be probably learning what he switches for not when he lands Edinburgh airport if the ballot has been triggered but he probably d. Thinks there's not enough support for it to be triggered so I think he's content just now but of course that is an interesting threat we've seen from the right and just what happens exactly as the ballot triggered and then the vote happens tomorrow night to or does he have some time to try and garner support and gather people together yes sort and some ways I think that you know here's perhaps also getting the story perhaps get out getting a bit of publicity about it he doesn't think that it would not be triggered by local members because he does feel he has their support but there will be a meeting 8 o'clock at night and if unite can muster enough union support branch he would figure he would face that trigger ballot but he simply doesn't think that Unite have enough people affiliate members there to actually trigger that but in a some ways it could also be viewed as it's interesting that you don't have done this it's a warning shot across his bows in a way and you think you very much indeed our political correspondent and their well let's get more on this from the former Scottish Labor adviser Simon pm and Scottish Labor activist Tom Flanagan could I. Afternoon to both of you and it's a simply day into the fact that in Mary has been a very vocal critic of Jeremy Colvin Simon. I think basically yes but. I remember back in 2015 warning. And kids drug deal was a big labor meeting in those and up the stairs in the coffee wrote you it made them a festival that was just before the leadership election and I was telling them they were big both making a big mistake being so personally critical of korban because my reading like and they had a constituency I know very well I live in that say I thought the members would vote for carbon which they did do right and they did do it again a year later quit and quit in a 2nd coup that tipped good against them. In money's grevilleas a very good constituency m.p. And I think you will hold onto it because of Pres is good record. But I think his incessant attacks he is naive not to think this would have happened and that people like you night or carbon supporters he was also opposed to Richard Lambert which again. Party members looked at for him but what you've had in Scotland is a hierarchy like the elected representatives and peas. Peas in a kind source of touch with the activists I met sacked of us that get them elected in the 1st place well I'm sure that I'm going to find out find out what we think their views that had Simon let's talk to one and find out anything said Tom What do you make of this decision by the Unite union to to to try and trigger this de selection Well I think you know labor is the political wing of the trade unions and you know he's a big Britain and even knows exactly what he's dealing with a classic misunderstanding of local branches and democratic structures and he's trying to read bit with a whole lend close case cutting for him type scenario. Strings if scared of the Union playing their role in our democracy that's his problem and nobody else's like Simon says he's clearly been on track in the States it's a local activists and I don't know if that's going to come back to buy it but it might well do you see if you're an ordinary member of the public. And listen to this he would maybe didn't marry into but he always votes with the whip evokes with the party you've got lots of other M.P.'s out there who aren't voting with the party at the moment they're not a baby and they're not getting what they're told so why does he get choose and is it just about this criticism of the leadership Well it's a good point if you turn a right and see why is this problem with carbon them he supports the policies of he is following the lying. Labor party's leadership was this big problem but goes for The Back in this probably what you would describe as right wing Labor it's up quite as making sure the Scottish Labor Hyatt are call them the careerists the people it's their job they have become out of touch the touched shielding the blood I bring yours with their b.s. And the s.n.p. Have to could vantage of that I mean s.n.p. Inroads to sore work cost labor constituencies right across Scotland where your money is well pretty good m.p. Which you'd like to reiterate but it is quite unique is very middle class is a large university electorate involved that So it's a middle class that gets middle class will you know what to do rather than the housing schemes one then that doesn't make sense either to try and diesel eggs him Tom Flanagan because if it is that they the middle class as it had been precise that are going to elect the next m.p. For that area then surely you're better off with in money sitting there rather than what he describes as a hard left Marxist can do that the little things eat at a time when you need to seat what I think. Over the top with a repeat of a hard left Marxist candidate and perhaps a. Maybe a more left wing candidate might not be successful and or south but I think the insight to be in Bertie you've got to look across the whole of Scotland where Scotland. Picture itself as a radical turn it to the s.n.p. As a socialist also and it's the s.n.p. And the tournament television or the radio and Emery's that criticising the socialist policies of Jeremy Coburn which are broadly popular amongst the electorate. The social media and you've got these new labor think has been. You know criticize you missed this move by you know I think in the east they're all for politics I mean Scottish Labor a spent force in the 1st place I think is more if you have up to make sense now I know what I want out because we don't have much time left is now the time for that given that you could be facing a general election before Christmas Well yeah I mean I think that is that there's no time at the present I think if we're going to do was call a general election this not be the right move that is up to the local members Me personally I would be happy to see him or he gone but the local members are got to decide that and they're expressing their democratic right good on it and Simon it's not off putting to that in general though the general public general voters sign well. You know money is using that as a ploy but what's the problem with the selection they get well pretty damned pieces are written for why the people who go writing did not Coleman before them why why couldn't they not have a say in who the representative of the park to has and this you know long problem in the Labor Party but people don't like Resul it should be used but is a job for life. I'm going to leave that question hanging thank you very much indeed Simon Piers got his labor advisor and also the Scottish and Labor activist Tom funding and telling me just coming up to 26 minutes past 12 and that means it's feel good lads turn as the jungle or some sort of trumpet sounding No I can sing in a b. I don't know no that's not Ok let's And let's be honest how many of us know about the Scottish sporting has that he could be made tonight if not than than don't want to you're not alone because some connected with Glasgow City Football Club think that their potential achievement has gone under the radar the club are closing in on the 13th successive woman's Premier League title and as club manager lot of Montgomery politely points out such a record dwarfs the top of a couple of other football clubs in Glasgow but you may have headed off to get Rangers men. Who may meet so noble honest to be Scottish a cut of the a list of take a look 2 years ago and they were kind of overwhelming and hopefully on for people I think a big issue is incredible. Incredible winning mentality incredible leadership skills of the Clears and our team in a bit huge number of really really talented players a very much goal was to political the city and it's that old adage in sport is not the winning a title is difficult enough but defending it is is a lot more difficult because all the teams now see a target on your back so to stretch this to potentially fast team titles and not just as a say in the Scottish context but in what sport it's almost unheard of. Yeah and I think it come August and you know it probably Christi is America but for that I don't think the cold may be the recognition that you know it should have had or the should have for a while is achieved and you know you have to get up to it right. It is key to whether it was potentially the 1st. But it just gets harder and harder and you know I think those there's a lot of misconceptions that you know our game must be pretty easy and we look at managed to win all the titles and it's not you know we have an extremely competitive league I wonder if that is part of the problem lot in the eighty's and ninety's from Green just winning and now one Celtics winning the accusation is that well that the big fish in the small pond and all the other opposition is not strong enough and because of the it's do you feel that perhaps you're not getting the leads that you deserve. Well I just think it's kind of been largely on I reckon like you know how well we've actually done you know I do you know often you know protests live on the Celtics You know certainly recent dominance and the end game again you know all of it was to turn it over internally but the 1st 2 to do and you know I would always like to follow a cop out that it's to get the 1st names and because it has already been done and then and and the women's game so. I certainly do feel a sense of frustration but you know you guys are all talking about us today which you know that has been toxic so hopefully if they do manage to get talking you know it will be hopefully you know a conversation for a little bit with a lot of just finally not appreciate your time and it's going to be a big night tonight if indeed you get the win at Motherwell we spoke to Susan Lapa madly on Good Morning Scotland former city planner and I asked the question that almost sounded amusing but but that is how malam a tough intrigue behind it which is this winning become boring that because you've won it so many times in the past that you almost become blazin that you're going to do it again well I never have that interview back you got and he said no she said don't become boring she strongly strongly say I said no. I don't ever know and that's why you know it is. You know sort of sort of tired maybe but one of the big legends in our game and she was our are not a number of titles but you know it's harder to cheat as a see no symbolizes war clubs all about you know we really love when we're good and we absolutely love the challenge of everyone else trying to trying to get those in and trying to keep people off a so you know again nothing else that it galvanizes Dischord everything was even that you know if we get another take over the Lehmann my goodness you want to know that the next one of hundreds ever Glasgow City club manager a lot of Montgomery a win at Motherwell tonight securing Glasgow City for have teeth succession a woman's Premier League title or look forward to that one thank you very much indeed. E.u. Leaders are considering whether to extend the breaks that deadline below beyond Oct 31st last night's Boris Johnson hole to his effort to write his withdrawal agreement into law after M.P.'s rejected his plan to get it signed off in 3 days Downing Street has indicated Mr Johnson will prioritize a general election over a delayed the election expert Professor Sir John Curtis says the polls are moving in the Conservatives favor on our regional They put them term points ahead of the Labor Party and if that were to be replicated in the ballot box it should give them an overall majority maybe around 20 or so but still not vote much room for safety or losing ground during the campaign. It's emerged that a church minister and his wife were seriously injured in an alleged assault in Mari that also left an 83 year old dog walker day Frank cannister was $83.00 died in hospital after the incident in Bergen Hill woods near El going on Monday the 2 other people have not been named as reverent Morris Smith and his wife Jeanette 2 are both 70 a 35 year old man is due to appear in court in connection with the incident. The number of detentions under the Mental Health Act in Scotland reached an all time high last year the mental welfare commission revealed they happen 6038 times rates of emergency orders used in a crisis have risen most sharply among teenagers over the last decade. Racial abuse and harassment remains a serious problem at university campuses in Scotland according to the equalities wants dog it says nearly a quarter of all I think minority students across the u.k. Have experienced Rachel racial harassment with much of it going under ported leaving institutions oblivious to the scale of the problem and us Scotland's Black students officer is Franklin Jacob one incident is one far too many to be honest and I'm quite surprised that you know at the 21st century people are people are still facing racial harassment however it's not an ideal world we need to obviously work towards creating a 0 hated environment 0 tolerance policy and so on. It's emerged that Thomas Cook's entire network of high street shops was bought for 6000000 pounds he's travelled based in Sunderland took over the 555 stores which works at just over 10000 pounds a shop the head of the Insolvency Service Dean Beal gave the details to M.P.'s on the business committee. The u.k. Needs to install 25000000 electric vehicle charging points or 4000 a day by 2050 to meet net 0 targets according to a report from Scottish Power but they say that government red tape means firms are limited in how much they can spend on infrastructure to support its electric vehicle charging points until consumer demand can be proved Keith Anderson is c.e.o. Of Scottish Power one of the things that will encourage people to make the switch just to Lord that they've got access to a charge point and therefore a lot of people will want to do this from the home what that will also do is ultimately make it cheaper because people can then slow charge their car overnight people want to charge their car when the in car parks at a supermarket so they want to nor they have access to those to continue topping up and charging up the vehicle you know let's find out what the weather has in store for us here in the West Coast in Glasgow it's been a lovely day Sigal in smarts here yes a lot of dry weather this afternoon a will be cloudy and breezy mind you and we do have some rain in the forecast affecting the northern and western isles the Northwest Highlands coastal Argyle and that will extend into St west Scotland as we head through the afternoon elsewhere aside from the old patch of drizzle it will be dry and the clouds thinning and breaking at times 2 allies some brightness the best of it across Mari Aberdeenshire and Angus said westerly winds will be brisk strong at times around the coasts and nearing gale force over the Western Isles and highs today $11.00 to $14.00 Celsius tonight rain will try to eastward so a damp spell of weather for most and then that will clear but some heavy blustery showers will follow in from the west and there could be the old rumble of thunder lows office. $6.00 to $9.00 Celsius and it will stay breezy tomorrow very strong winds in the Northwest gusts of 60 miles an hour for the Western Isles and generally it will be a windy day across the country will see a mix of sunny spells and blustery showers the share is heaviest and most frequent in the West with the best of the sunshine in the East although it's likely that a band of showers will tend to work its way south and east winds across the country during the afternoon solutions likely to become a wee bit more widespread and a cool feel tomorrow night we're in for a cold one we'll see showers turning wintry above about 400 meters still gales in the northwest and throughout the day on Friday and for Friday itself it will be a day of sunny spells and showers the showers most frequent in the northwest we also see a band of rain pushing into the south some uncertainty at this stage as to how far north that rain will get but we could see some snow for the high ground or the Southern happens as the forecast. In the digital radio f.m. Medium wave b.b.c. Sounds b.b.c. Radio Scotland the time they're 23 minutes to one no if your own blood pressure pills have you ever wondered whether you'd be best taking them in the morning or the evening researchers are working on that very question because if one system has better results it would be simple at simple change to bring health benefits for patients when the latest studies suggest bed time is the best time for this type of medication the work in Spain followed around 1900000 patients for an average of 6 years Julie Ward is a senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation we're talking about blood pressure medication now the study which was carried out in northern Spain you didn't really it looked at all blood pressure medications so not one specific type so people that were taking blood pressure medication 12 or 3 types of medication. Over a long period of time and whether it was best to take it in the morning or in the evening and just tell us then a bit about what they found and what they found from this study that the people that took their blood pressure medication in the evening were much less likely to have heart attacks strokes heart failure and early deaths. Going forward and this has been ad subject of some discussion for quite a long time now as to when when is best to take medications That's right that's right and this study alone is quite important to say that this study alone is not going to change guidelines as they stand at the moment so the guidelines nationally at the moment don't state whether you should take them in the morning or the evening but it is important to note that it's a starting point is a good study is a robust study but it's just one study and what we tend to do is we look at studies over 51015 even 20 years and we build up on that research and then we look and then guidelines are normally changed based on the cumulative research and not just one study so how does this study then fit in with other research that's been done on this well Other research has shown exactly the same this is on a larger scale so now we need it on an even larger scale we need on a global scale because this was just a cohort of people in northern Spain it was large it was 2020000 people but there were limitations to the study the they were Caucasian people so that they didn't involve people from ethnic groups so that's a limitation that needs addressing and also interestingly it didn't even show shift workers it's people that worked night instead of day so it needs to be out sort of more why larger scale research before it changes practice. But anybody who's listening to this will then be a wee bit more confused because if you're saying it fits with a lot of research that says taking the specific type of medication in the evening is better for you and reduces the risk of heart problems well if it fits in with all the research so far should people not think about changing the way they take them now. Well this is exactly why we do the research is to see how robust it cumulatively how robust it is and yes it's it's getting it's not very yet because it's not on a global scale but it's getting there so anybody that's taking blood pressure medication we would certainly recommend chatting to the Jeep a pharmacist about the best time to take it so don't change anything at the moment don't stop taking the blood pressure medication change the tie but talk to your Jeep a taught your pharmacist and say Look emerging research is coming through stating it might be better to take it in the evening what do you think. I was such as having we look at some of the figures there about the research and the difference it reduced. It nearly half to risk a 45 percent reduction of dying from or suffering heart attacks stroke heart failure and. It's that sense I mean what if it's going to almost have the risk is it not something worth perhaps acting on sooner rather than later. Well again it's very good research but in the global scheme it's quite small because it is just that one cohort of people in northern Spain and as I said previously did not include people of different ethnicities and that's really important because we do know that people from certain ethnic groups South Asian people and people from black Africa are appealing groups a much more likely to have high blood pressure than Caucasians So it's important that we take this research seriously. And look at it you know push for more research going forward to include those other groups to make it sound and in your experience when do most people take their medication to the sort of wake up and take it when it's easy for them to remember. Well yes a lot of people do take it in the morning for that very reason because people have busy lives so they get up they have their breakfast take their medication off for the day and when they come home in the end they just want to relax or catch up on that shows or social activities so so it does make sense but a lot of people now are living with what we call long time conditions so not just high blood pressure but other things as well and they're taking medications throughout the day they're taking them in luring maybe some at lunchtime maybe some in the afternoon and maybe some in the evening so it's this is where it's important to talk to cheap pay because what we don't want is if somebody is taking certain medication in the morning and some in the evening it might be too much to take it all in the evening so there could be some swapping around to do so that's why it's really important to involve your g.p. Or your pharmacist before you chair. Ange the times of your medication Julie Ward there who's a senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation Yeah and we can't stress enough don't suddenly start swapping Ranger medications just off the piece of this research always best to talk to your g.p. Time now just coming up to 16 minutes to one. Night or there's a big study out today which claims spending lots of time on social media during the day can lead to problems falling asleep at night and getting up the next morning the report which has been published in the British Medical Journal involved to almost $12000.00 teenagers aged between $13.15 it found that a 5th spend more than 5 hours a day on their devices and the using sites like Facebook and Twitter lead to frequent wakings and problems getting back to sleep well Holly Scott was one of the researchers from the University of Glasgow and joins us on the line now good afternoon to you Holly I 5 hours a day on social media. To do anything else yeah I think that's one thing that's been really and Jason have access to this huge sea of visa from all of these teens across the u.k. Is to actually see the v.t. Student how much time they spend on social media so that tends to grab the headlines those one in 5 who spent in more than 5 areas of the on social media actually be really interested to see the weight range saw a 3rd of young people reported spend less than an hour a day on social media so it's useful for us to have that be slain to help inform our discussions around and I have a 13 year old who would be on social media constantly if she was allowed to and her school is advised her to put her phone into night to moods and that can help but under this study you would think it's more specifically what she's doing rather than the manner in which she's doing it absolutely a big part of what we wanted to do with the study was to move away from just looking at sort of measures of screen tame or for news and looking at how much time has been spent on the devices we wanted to move away on that and focus specifically on social. Media use because you know an Irish pain using your form could be very different depending on whether you're just browsing through information or whether you're actually have a really interesting chat with one of your friends and it's those sort of the valuable reward that we can get from social interactions space least teenagers it makes it sort of understandable why it may be difficult for some young people to prioritize their sleep over the chance to keep chatting with their friends what sort of impact is that having on their sleep so we did find in a study that. The young people who spend more tame using social media wear more likely to fall asleep later on school nights and weekends compared to those who are used to an average amount and that's a particular concern on school nights because they're still having to get up early to get to school so if they are staying up late or spend an extra tame doing whatever activity that is it could be social media it could be something else that's tame it's not spent sleeping and they're not quite getting enough tame to get the filament of sleep that they need to really function wail the next day at school and when they do wake up in the middle night it's causing problems with them getting back to sleep why is that is it because they can't we can't switch their minds off they want to see whatever whoever is answered next. The reply it's been for some people that can definitely be part of it so it's not just the actual behavior of spending 10 using a phone is everything that goes on around that sort of emotional connection and sort of mental arose all that we can get so some young people and studies that we've done were spoken to young people got their perspective so I mean people have said exactly that sort of staying on there for now on social media and keep them up later be even once the 4th day in their main can still be quite busy thinking about you know I'm a mess and a are my friends having a chat right now that I'm not part of and that can make it difficult to sort of relax and fall asleep and get good quality sleep it's really hard as a period because this is how teenagers communicate in my when I was a teenager we spoke on the phone endlessly they don't do that no the. Communicating through social media was the was the answer absolutely I think it's really challenging for it's not just the say of teenagers who are facing the current state of platforms and the current media landscape and trying to navigate that is teenagers is also this current generation of parents who are trying to support their teenagers through that through war has become a very different media landscape from what they were used to and that's an ongoing issues these things constantly to fail and we're all trying to work a base practice to support young people so I think what our work. Which suggests or speaking to young people in heat and from adults and working with skills a little better is is to try to to not focus too much on restricting access to devices although that's an understandable response but it can actually be more constructive if Peyton's and teachers take a more dialogue based approach and try to start a conversation with their teens to hear their perspective and have a bit of a discussion about some of the concerns they may have a bit disconnected from social media it may attract them to sort of collaborate on that a little bit to thank you for what they could do to support getting that balance right still getting the most social media but also getting the sleep that they need and all the parents trying to sort out their own social media issues as well at the same time Holly thank you very much indeed only Scott there from the University of Glasgow are you listening to b.b.c. Radio Scotland today with Laura Maxwell Still to come will be talking mentoring with a man who set up a charity to mentor young people who've been through the care system about Herods helping them to stay on at school person exams and go on to either further education or go right there and get jobs but 1st Victoria has the headlines 39 bodies have been found in Essex inside a lorry container ship from Bulgaria the U.K.'s politicians clash at Prime Minister's Questions the day after Boris Johnson's brags that plan hit the buffers and an action plan to tackle the rising tide of drugs deaths in Dun d. We'll bring you f.c. Porto vs Rangers followed by Celtic parses a lot c.e.o. . Sports to model from by starting on digital radio each one will be do we I don't want. B.b.c. Radio Scotland it's $10.00 to $1.00 and highly rated Amazon products which could be having their sales boosted by fake reviews according to which the Consumers Association put items sold and through their product tests and many didn't make the grade Earlier I spoke to their consumer expert Adam French Well considering that around 23000000000 pounds worth of consumer spending is heavily influenced by by customer reviews by user reviews every single year fake reviews are really serious issue for everyone in the u.k. The real risk here is that we are being g 2 really into into buying products that do not live up to expectations and wasting our hard earned money on something that frankly would be embarrassed spending elsewhere given that the reviews are fake How do you conducting your research. It can be really difficult to spot a fake review especially if you're any casually shopping usually we tend to just look at the top level star review most of us when we're shopping or see 4 and a half 5 stars and think Brilliant we're on to we're on to a bargain here especially when you're on a website such as Amazon for example you can be looking at something like Amazon's choice recommendation which in our research where we looked at some of the the products that we found fake reviews on we found that wasn't always the case the Amazon's choice meant you were really buying the best product in fact some of those when we finally tested them turned out to be anything but the best them are actually doughboys as far as which were concerned we found a particular pair of headphones which had shocking sound quality yet it was an Amazon's choice recommendation on that particular website so as a customer using those Web sites relying on those reviews it can be really tricky is it certain products or is it certain suppliers from certain countries which tend to be the worst we find this is a widespread issue across. Across websites such as Amazon We've also identified in the past issues of Trip Advisor for example where fake reviews are being uploaded for for hotel listings as well so this isn't limited to just one type of product or coming from one particular location this can be happening across the board these are the kind of products being targeted now predominantly at the moment we are finding it's happening with fairly unknown branded products particularly when you're looking at Amazon instead of kind of brands we haven't heard of the headphones I mentioned where a company called You know May which I've never actually heard of before and I'm not sure I pronounced that properly Eva nowadays head phones were available on Amazon they came from China predominately you know a lot of products do however it's really hard to track down the manufacturer and a lot of cases and actually get to the bottom of where where these products are coming from he's generating fake reviews is that people who are being paid to fake review or is that the companies themselves or how does that work our research is have actually infiltrated quite a few Facebook groups closed Facebook groups where people are being incentivized to leave fake reviews say their effort to cash back rewards or to cover the cost of the product have bought for example to leave positive reviews of products often those reviews can be scripted However we are starting to see them become more advanced now and actually encouraging people to leave images of. Review products as well to make their interview seem more legitimate say you know these people are being encouraged predominantly by you would imagine the people selling mis selling these products say the manufacturer is those people importing them and listing on Amazon clearly have a vested interest in that product selling and there's no doubt that a positive review has a massive impact really on how many people see that product is being worthwhile to buy I suppose it's one thing headphones having rubbish say as an. Totally different thing if something's not wired properly or it's it's just really shoddy workmanship and could be dangerous can you trust any of the reviews now that you read online because it does make you wonder what you're reading Yeah absolutely misinformation is a huge problem online I mean it's well covered in a moment when you look at things like care about politics at the moment without getting drawn into the details or people are very aware that misinformation is a huge issue on online and actually in the can she was space is just the same that there's so much information out there so much potential there for abuse of the system and it's crucial now the competition of markets authority actually investigate fake reviews as a problem for consumers and start to shut down some of these avenues for misinformation we had I'm French there who's the consumer expert to at which an Amazon says it's relentless and its efforts to protect the integrity of reviews any attempt to manipulate customer reviews is strictly prohibited and the last year alone it says they've spent over 308000000 pounds to protect customers from abuse. Now a band from the Western Isles have sold out. Ballroom just a year after their 1st ever gay get in a pub in Louis Pete and diesel write songs which tell stories about island life in a funny way their 2nd album light to my buyer will be released in the New Year Let's have a listen. But. Anybody think. That. There's going to Gallacher English only. Been in a score to the band members are in our store in every studio and can tell me how are you doing guys. Yet neither of you know has the right you're there I had to get my ear into it do you have to sort of get it you know whenever you're listening to your songs. I don't know you have to ask you'll have to ask boy the what's going on there out. I don't know I mean what he does this you know I don't know I think it ticks everybody off why he had to get it and since you did 1st before others are going to show you are you there are you the singer then yes that's me is that Pete I don't know you can be so I know you get really confused there are huge Pete and he's diesel and how did you come up with a name I don't I don't think I don't think one of us is p. And one of us is diesel it's just a name we kind of thought of we had to come up with something quick the pressure was on Things were moving fast so boy he used to sing songs about Pete. I mean we've always been right tractors lorries diggers diesel engines and it was just it was the 1st thing we could think of that was. Now if he could have any combustion fuel Well how do you know and. So were you thinking about it then. But he much island life trying to get a bit of comedy into the thong with I try not to be too C.D.'s a bird or songs or any or are you just are too cheeky or would that be I was going to say it would be fairly easy to offend people locally if you were to if you're taking the money mickey out of island life too much here what tends to happen as Boy do you write songs about Island people on the actually names them in the songs before getting permission of it's Ok if we can put them in the song or not so I don't know how many of them are going to come after them to complain about it but by then it's too late it's already recorded and put out on cd and there's nothing we can do about it until you find yourself in a corner dangerous way to live em are you always this fly by the seat your pants. Pretty much yeah I would say sure troll just here I mean I never really myself on early weekend of we actually mentioned in the studio the other day were to get the band can a new life we have in the band we're taking a day by day but boy he says he's taking it minute by minute so it has been something of a whirlwind it hasn't if you've only it's only a year since you did your 1st gig in Stornoway and all of a sudden you've sold at the Barrowlands. Yeah that sounds pretty crazy we just. Didn't expect that anyway never mind the 1st gig we did with absolutely chalk a block in the us i want a year to go on and after that we could offer to our 1st festival and could just bring going big out on big on big Irish and then on the bottle and for just a short when we heard it was short I had done in the space of time it did sound like we were totally shocked through who knows what will happen next so your 1st gig was a year to go but have you been playing together for a while. No we actually we actually took a forced We took our 1st faced of a booking before the band and even formed boy he just wrote the song up online festival full. And then they said they're coming to play and we're like well we haven't really started the band and we only know 2 songs and they're like That's 5 more mics based on the stage for you for 2 songs so by the time the festival came road we knew about 4 or 5 But no everybody seemed to just give us a chance from day one so many people been helping us along Keith Morris and he studio in Stornoway has really got things going for us if it wasn't for her there would have been I mean I know we had the material to put on it but it wasn't for her. Pulling the strings to get it done that would've happened you know what can everybody expect then he's coming to see this 2022 or. To know you have a sort of a gimmick on stage as well or yeah boy he's the get make fun of it and I ask what boy he does I'm tired he's dressed when he doesn't. You don't want to know we were playing we were playing out on face to really early pollute just a couple of weeks ago and halfway through the set on the main stage but he got up and walked off and he said I'm just going to toilet I'll be back in a minute we hurried out of the world saw a few people in the crowd where I expected something big to happen I thought boy he was going to come flying back in on a supply or something but annoyed genuinely just round the toilet but no higher technic. Or Nothing but we're just running up against the time that music is our music to say that it's just coming up to 1 o'clock Kalam tried in a Scott Pete diesel. Radio f.m. Medium wave b.b.c.
