You're listening to the show but can't start. It's not a suitably busy Thursday afternoon right let's look at this week's movie reviews we have Allison wrote of the head of the Herald on Sunday Hello Allison how are you today I'm good thanks all coiled and ready to go and also here with me in Edinburgh we got film of your Stephen Carter Stephen afternoon good afternoon right before we get to the meat of age the films Ellis get down to our 1st topical choosing to play us out on the shore to D.C. . To the seas the musical speech will look a hero with that iconic theme chin opening to its 1st audience at the Royal I C M N N But I won't premiere as you were asking which other piece of music makes you instantly think of a certain film doesn't have to be an instrument like that one it can be a fully formed pop it what do you think has some ideas to get you thinking. So some big songs in there some big films as well Celine Dion My Heart Will Go On that was for of course Titanic Trainspotting featured airborne slippy from underworld we had Aerosmith A don't want to miss a thing in the film Armageddon and when Houston I Will Always Love You and the bodyguard of course B.G. Thomas raindrops the form I had that was Butch casting the Sundance Kid and The George because selection little green bag from Reservoir Dogs saw that's just a few suggestions over to you let us know what you think we should be playing just before 4 o'clock and we'll stick you on at the end of the show you can text each of the 95 tweet B.B.C. R S after news or stick a message on our Facebook page let's see what Chin's our film critics would go for Allison Fein selection of change there is the one that always makes you think of a particular film. Flashdance well feeling because just because it's a pure cheese and everything Franklin think that those you are going to get an image of of just get a book award through I mean next year they're from an S.T.D. So many so many years when you start thinking yeah yeah and so trying to well I don't know one was difficult extreme ways by movie which made me the Bourne films and you can leave your house on by Tom joined me the full monty but if I have to pick one it be stayin alive by the Bee Gees' when I hear that I just think of young George Warren as praying stand in the street kind of paint his hand tent sized flares on just diary in a way to the music they appear in a picture they appear in a picture I'm going to go for it there's a couple of Absolute Beginners was a great song with David Bowie dreadful film by a great source the plumber Yeah and Patsy Kensit things in that one but the one I would always wear was cool by the Beach Boys and the reason for that was from. Yeah with that Tom Cruise and the reason I'm going to go for that is it was really the dawn of the CD I think was one of the 1st C.D.'s The boat was the same track that just for that song so any time you're cool with the Beach Boys a thing as a kid so it has a great central and it but it's not Alison it's not my choice not Steven Joyce is your choice still is to let us know which chin from which film you think we should finish with before 4 o'clock right 1st from out for review today stars Julia Roberts and rising star look as hedges you bust upon the scene in Manchester by the C.P. Band is back is a family addiction drama topic and issues thrown up by the opioid crisis currently sweeping America 90 year old Ben Barnes played by look as hedges unexpectedly returns home from rehab to his family suburban home on the morning of Christmas Eve Ben's mother Holly Julia Roberts is relieved and welcoming but wary over sons staying clean over a turbulent 24 hours new truths are revealed and Holly's undying love for a son is tested and she does everything in our power to keep him safe OK. Here's the deal and it is not negotiable. You get a day. Are you sure so long as you pass the drug test I'm about to administer stay clean while you're here and that this time tomorrow you're back in sober living yeah OK now I'm not done these are our terms and I don't give a shit if you hate these rules you did not leave my sight ever you not close the door to your room where by the way I'll be sleeping on the floor and if you try to sneak off your bed so much as makes a squeak I will be all over you because for the next 24 hours you are mine all mine got it. I got it. Julia Roberts look is hedges then a moment from Ben is back Allison let's say let's tell you a few weeks ago when we reviewed beautiful boys starring Steve Crone too with the Shalem a similar theme there how does this film compare it slightly unfortunate in the timing I would see that the beautiful boy was a lot more. And it was be stored in you know on a 2 story I think with this one Peter Haiti's page is his son but it's not a personal story by any means it was just as a result of research that 10 pages did into the subject of opioid addiction and thought it would be good to explore in a film so it's a very different. Way it is coming from but it does touch the same sort of B.C.'s I.E. The impact on the Family which one did enjoy most of the 2 I have to see I've probably thought the former although this one I did love simply because of Julia ball but and because Hades and the terrific an ensign We'll get to their performances in just a moment Stephen you weren't expecting much from this one 0. I'm not really sure why I just I don't we seen pictures of a vet a few can of reviews of it and I thought the thing about drug dramas is it's a dark subject and if it's about a mother looking after a son it just seemed to me like it was going to be quite 2 hours of misery but that was just on people are forced to look up and you I was drawn in immediately the reelect a big part of that for me was Julia Roberts I thought she was fantastic best performance and Erin Brockovich she's got are a really good unimpressed mother stealer saw in the film when really was alone so yes we all know that a lot. So she's really good at telling people off because through the movie she's play in a kind of conflicted character so she loves her son she wants him to get bear she's the one that wants him to come back and spend time with the family no one else does as well sister and the stepfather was in there so she's on his side but then when he does something you'll see her just snap and change within a 2nd and she goes in a vengeful angry protective mama bear mode and she's very good at all that she's also very good at playing a lot of the scene much so there's a great scene where she takes her son to the mall as they see in America and as you heard in the clip she's already taught them that you're not going to get must say. I'm going to be with you old all day so he goes into a changing room and a clue shop to try stuff on and he can in a go she is for that you know I can shut the door for 2 seconds and she Shushi relents or just as the doors close and he says something like he makes a can a wisecracker joke about or might use something. And you see her face school from that's not funny to instant panic and then she's buying in the door trying to get in there and she plays a lot of this with her actually sooner than he really did so well but praise the Steve Allison seem just her biggest and best performance and since Brockovich would you would you go along with that yeah because she's very such as you know sweet and sour and both in a personality in you know and had dialogues are very smart all the dialogues Verdi on the money I mean it's another sort of mother vote for her and she gets to show the same range of emotional light and she Stephen saved city just so well in and Brockovich and you know that feast of hers I know she's making a big splash now in T.V. Again but you know Julia Roberts Reese is just made for the big screen and you know and had expressions just flickered across it you know in a quite marvelous way what Lucas as a band I was fear I mean he's a real talent I mean anybody who saw him in Manchester by the sea will know that and they'll recognize him in in fact both he and Julia Roberts maybe recommendations for people you know so different generations but he's a salute because he needs to be he's got the characters got problems but he needs to be a charmer needs to be able to manipulate people to get what he wants and he is this you know lovely mix of such of you know quiet Manus a lot of sweetness and good heart as whale and you mentioned that his father Peter Hedges great a director on this film give us a bit of background about him he did. Go but. About a Boy and more recently done in real life. And interesting Katrina's he started off really whale with it with Gilbert you know had a hit with that and then as he says himself he was sort of went into a bit of a trough in the last couple years just looking for more material that city dome and the subject of our opioid addiction you know came across as. His desk and he started to look into it and thought it be a great subject to explore Stephen had to tackle a subject of ours means massive at the moment America's return to some introduction to this or cross over to the issues itself and the story line to work I thought so and one of the things I thought was interesting about that as and the difference between this and beautiful boy is this actually looks at the effect that someone when they're trying to get clean what they have to deal with so in most films about drugs like beautiful boy the focus is on or and I want to take some I'm not going to take some and I want to take some of them not that it's on here this boy had to be he was also looking at the guilt that he feel that he felt because no he was back home and clean and sober when he was going to his neighborhood he would see someone and you could tell or he dealt drugs that person or always ruin that person's life or that woman's lost a child because of him so that was a different live for me the phone quite interested I never seen that tackle before so he's got this week she can go and when they go shopping with his mom again every To me see someone it's almost like he wants to retreat into a shell and he doesn't want to look at them or think it was done and is mostly going to tell me tell me what was the person who was the significance of that and just the draw of him you can see doesn't want to talk about it so for me that was a new angle. I've seen the chill haven't seen the film but you get there's also seems to be a part of story when we get to gets drawn back into the dark so they really kind of has to step back into that world again it is that kind of just add to the tensions that's through more Winston for me that is a bit of a problem with the film because you know the Jesus is say out this employer you know what the kid is there for 24 hours he has to find a way of getting the mother and son to stay together for that P.D. It so he contrived this. Storyline and which the air the dog was missing and they have to try and find it and that takes him an agenda through his past I thought that was just China he bit too hard Stephen you were a great group well it does definitely sounds silly on paper and I read. Drug film. 2nd half they were looking for the family dog it does sound a bit silly. And it took me a while to adjust because while it was happening I thought oh this film is no a thriller it wasn't a thought a minute ago the drug Drama know it's going to morph into the store but it did work for me that maybe because I love dogs and we've got 2 dogs in our family the thought of one of them getting kidnapped would set me on edge you know I agree with you there absolutely and one of the fighters say over Christmas Eve This generally emotionally fraught stressful period of the year anyway it is that's all wrapped up the tension a bit that's fine because that sort of adds to the coin takes because his sponsor and his counselor have told him that he can't go you shouldn't go home at Christmas because it's one of the worst times when in the wash Chicot P.D. It's for bringing back memories and temptations so that's Soucie that works all right to Steve what do you think about the fact there was sit in this 24 hour period was a case of the tension built and built you know and then when well as you get towards the end of the film Christmas is stressful we all know that if you if you've got a small farmer a big family or someone burns the soup is suddenly a massive deal so you can only imagine if someone in your family was on drugs and does it come back and Christmas Day Not good time and bad idea and And what about Ben's past Allison which was heavy through the story of the film as well how does that impact on the character and interactions among the more well that's quite revealing and it comes Lee in the film and you know you think is her mother is his mother you know the Julia Roberts got to know is everything that when they go through this journey into his past you know things come up that she has absolutely no idea about and it gets across the Sains that he's been living this you know secret life that nobody has known anything about and that she's going to have to deal with this you know in the future so this is the question as well of course because what I think comes out in this film is that he has done bad things and he's not been a lake's guy and he's trying to explain that to his mom Yeah absolutely yeah and as a see you know look as you know has to be a very delicate mix of them. You know light and shade but yes but he is and the 2 of them really spark off each other as well Steve you think it went far enough in terms of the darkness Yeah yeah good good balance because there are there are some times where he would reveal something or he would tell his mom something of his past and I would find myself would. You know it's all good he's been in therapy enough I'm assuming that they've advised them you have to be honest you have to tell your loved ones but sorry mom if that was me I don't know if I didn't tell her some of the heat or feel pretty grim So you think this could be the start of over new subjoin or if you like of a beautiful boy Ben is back no this this family said addiction drama do you think we're going to see more of this kind of photo Allison assailant then we're going to see a lot more about the opioid crisis I mean it's been going on in Hollywood for a while now you know the films about it but I think because of these 2 are going to see in a certain amount of flood of them OK then write some up Steven of the 2 perhaps which wouldn't would you would you go and see which would you recommend. But it is back a real actor you like to see it with them for that and I've already asked the question would you recommend the film Allison as a watch definitely you know as I see it whatever age get it Putin whether you're going to look is ages old Julie at all but you like this can and thank you very much both of you Ben is back to most of it at 15 more film reviews from Allison and Stephen soon the next one we're going to look at is fisherman's friends it's a British comedy drama about a group of singing Cornish fisherman stars Daniel Mays David Heyman and tuppence Middleton from the same track of the film this is no hopers. Future. Holds. That. That's no hopers from Fisherman's friends over said was a hit in the charts with regards to the album sales will see how the film fears shortly and talking of music from films are topical June for today we're looking for your song suggestions and bits of music that make you instantly think of a film and less goofy some of these women actually please play the claimers 500 miles that plays the very beginning at the one of my favorite films Benjamin Johnny Depp and even Quinn that song evokes instant memories of the very funny how Cap scene and the alternative tatty mashing and 2 steel making methods cotton and Sonny shell and thank you for that Ian has gone for the end by The Doors from Apocalypse Now and the Aberdeen music from the film what about Mike Oldfield cheap Bueller bells from the Exorcist and maybe not the fool album version though it would have a best film track the fabulous Maria McKee singing show me Heaven from the terrible Days of Thunder study the awful top cruise all come on best thing on the films as Nigel on out and very quickly the last one here for the slow batch you're just too good to be true thanks very much and the Williams takes me right back to the scene in the D. Hunter when the guys are playing snooker also the song everybody's talking from Nielsen never feels to me well up because I see the tragic character in the film Midnight Cowboy police will believe by Dustin Hoffman That's from Dorothy on her way to Edinburgh glad you're enjoying the shoot Dorothy keep stations coming in and will choose one and finish off the show with just before 4 o'clock this is B.B.C. Radio Scotland see to see some of the biggest names in country music to Glasgow but everybody we are late and. And you're listening to you another country we think you are. Catching up with the coverage on B.B.C. Sunny and listen to this cheesy night from 9 to hear from even more of the artists who performed at the festival yeah the big. Cliff Brett Eldridge chase one great white a love that sonically then vicious we all say that they get it. Actually McBride called my mom said they were nominated for a Grammy she said in another country with Ricky Ross on P.P.C. Radio Scotland it was into the afternoon show with myself crowd Stroger Steven and Allison reviewing some of the latest river films this weekend and next we're talking about a British film based on the true story of a group of singing Cornish fisherman who secured a record deal with Universal Music that album of covers versions of traditional sea shanties reached the top 10 in the film brush a record label rep Danny played by Daniel Mays is charged by his boss to sign fisherman's friends and amateur male vocal group Danny is B. Which by them and local hotelier own played by tuppence Middleton completely unaware his boss's instructions is a wind up we already had a sample of the music from the soundtrack Here's a moment from the film where the local pub where Danny approaches the man with the idea of becoming their manager. They say they can't buy side our lives yesterday so let's talk at the. I want to talk to you in a voice about a future growth. That. I'll manage bands that I'm interested in represent and you can come and talk to the boys. Your information. Is the Roger Daltry of the group and I'll bear that in mind. What you knew saying was one I was brand moments in the music business when you realize you are witnessing something truly original the but knowing is you've got a unique sound and we believe we can help you get it released by a major label. My God I'm Something tells me they weren't entirely convinced a moment there from your release fisherman's friends let's find out what our reviewers thought Stevens thought were you in this what were your thoughts going to this film what were your impressions and what you saw was killed looking forward to the basic storyline remains male films like The fuel Monty and brushed off and Calendar Girls films a lot of critics could be which they fit but films are really really enjoy and I like films with the scrappy local underdogs who find success so I was kind of looking forward. It's an odd It's an odd one to review because when I came home from the screening my notepad was about 6 pages of negative things and criticisms and low grapes and things in quick work for me by joy that. My food was tappin through I was one of the by the charm I mean on the note pad I picked up part and I kept reined in things that annoyed me or didn't work or didn't believe but I won me over but we'll get to those just about also what do you think about what was your thoughts going to see this fade I'm going to feel one of those sniffy film critics and. I just thought sea shanties Cornwall fisherman he says that from London you know hoard me bag I really wasn't looking forward to it and I can see that he did it it was all perfectly pleasant I can't say that I was laughing like those fishermen there but it's a true story is it was a. Had never come across it and I can see that my life was much in the hands by lending about it but you know good luck to them but I hadn't you know personally had off them so it seems to follow the familiar story arc of many a few good British comedy the underdogs as you mentioned you triumph and. Generalization there was are more going on in the film after you've read all your notes Stephen is yeah it's pretty much of that to be honest read the drama feels very manufactured and what I mean by that as Danny the lead character is supposed to be this can really salesman take guy who comes to Cornwall. And you know he takes advantage of the singers and then over the course of the film he's he's charmed by these lovely locals that just not as a toll he's a nice guy right from the start and when he gets there the locals are the ones who are quite sniffy and dismissive and rude and unwelcoming one of the things the film didn't do for me for me was it didn't sell the police I'm sure the kid had lots of lovely shots of the scenery and meet the locals charming in a centric it didn't really do enough of that for me. And the fishermen themselves were completely interchangeable so we're talking about the film on earlier in the money even the supporting characters you've got the one who wants to lose weight you've got the one who's been stuck you know you could you have you have a good idea of who these guys are in this film it was freshman one fisherman 2 fisherman 3 apart from James Pugh 4 who gets a fair amount to do. By again despite all of that as I was the sediment to go it's hard to he just I don't think there's anything magical but not too funny it's not to enjoy a bowl something that did work was the room until between Daniel meis and tuppence Middleton I think her name is just he's really charming What about the cast is a BIG on some of the names David Hayman's in the Alice in John's comedian turn turn back to his rose so good and I don't you blink of course what the performance is like the performances that are fine I mean especially from Daniel me as he's one of the best things in the film because I just I like his schtick you know he's people know remember him from the line of duty in a line has called him you know is that he's a likable kind of guy there's also no clock in there is whale of mention top and Smith to it and she's very good so you know so it kind of feces that you have seen before in Vegas other things so good cast a true story set in a lovely part of the United Kingdom Cornel Cornel we were Does it really with all the flaws. That it doesn't make enough of the Kishen you know I mean it's got this dream location this. A tiny village you know on the coast and you could have done a lot more with. A bit more than chasing it just seemed very much of the sort of thing that would be a nice find in the tail you know we you know when you think about past a couple of hours but I'm not sure the 7 that he cinematic you don't actually need to go to these pictures to see it a bit predictable because you know it's a true story so it was common Yeah I mean predictable of just because you know you know it's going to be a happy ending because that's what all the signs are pointing Stephen you feel as predictable as well yeah very very predictable that's not necessarily a bad thing for everyone I mean some people like to go to the cinema and they just like to see something that's undermanned and if you watch even a lot of films if you watch some films when you go in here you'll think great he's going to go this police he's going to get one over by They're going to tame a warmth and then when they do warm to him they'll find out something about him they don't like set up the finale we go in the back we've all seen that before you know who is going to play it but then you Mieses is just got enough likeability to care oh you along with him what about humor. From what I've seen and the trailer that seems seems nice gentle humor throw did it did it keep you chuckling Allison no. I do it I mean maybe yes my own. Points but I can't say that I laughed at life I was thinking that maybe me and else and saw this because we risk in very early in the morning I wake I I think this is the sort of film that would definitely benefit from being in a cinema with punters who are laughing. Because a room is very quiet didn't hear much of any chuckle and there was no singing along Stephen you quite like the sea shanties all my food was going who was there for me if it was even going you would play in that clip there there's a quite a good scene in the film where James Purefoy takes he's going to head the leader of the locals Hemet his boys go to London and they go to this pub and the star an impromptu sing along and I quite like that was an ace I would like to see more scenes like that you know and he didn't think it give us a good authentic view for Cornwall and no really I mean it was. Quite good on this is the tension between you know incomers and that kind of thing. Stephen manging to me not just with NO happen in a London pub you know Cornish and fisherman leading a lovely sing song with everybody smiling so the culture clash elements that work for you then just sounds and mentioned as a said earlier it was it was a bit the wrong way round for me I thought the look in the nice likeable ones and then you could see why he wanted to stay there and be one of them whereas he was the nice polite one and they were a bit hostile and a bit unfriendly and a bit sort of who you know everyone here worried and here was a weddin and or King last year and it was just a very welcoming place every shop he went over was all who don't I don't know you. And I could after being there for a day I thought I can see why people like it here so I thought if the film would be went with that approach as opposed to nobody can want them here they can to judge them straight away they saw him as the seals been in and we all want what you're selling Where is he was being nice and friendly he was actually trying to help them so I'm guessing just by listening to the 2 of you that this is perhaps not going to go down as one of the sort of classic British comedies what can you see about to do to perhaps and taste someone to make a trip to the cinema good series when you could have a look at if you planning on holding in Cornwall. Go and have a look at it if you're planning on holding Cornwall you can see on the poster. Stephen what do you think of your certain chatting to some poles in the boat that would make you going to them to the pictures to see this was funny because my dad told me yesterday he said I want to see fisherman's friends was a lake and I think he will quick I think mobile market too and I don't mean that as as an insult I just think it's that kind of undemanding you don't need to sit there and think about what you're watching just what should bring off it's as predictable and it's a bit broader It's a bit silly but find things that well and those are good time to bring in a special guest David Heyman who stars in the film that if you just come in the studio only joking he's not with us today. So. It's a relief all right in the thick fisherman's friends is supposed to get 12 A We have one more film of you from Alice and Steven coming up before the end of the hour this is B.B.C. Radio Scotland we get in we get on air and then something totally unexpected break so happens what information do we have at this stage rumors have been swirling around Weston I think is the fire the flames have died down very slightly so it's all about getting right to the heart of the story as quickly as we possibly can and on radio where lucky and not we can do that pretty effectively Good Morning Scotland Keeping you informed as soon as you wake up every morning on B.B.C. Radio Scott. And keep it takes and tweets coming in this theme is quite your imagination for a topical tune for today. Opens tonight I guess 1st audience at the Lyceum in Edinburgh and there were remembering that Mark Knopfler theme so we're asking you to send us your suggestion of a topical Chuen for one piece of music that makes you think of a movie Paul docket has been in touch. Cover of Dream a Little Dream of me in the film French kiss loved Jackie Abbott singing this and it cost me $16.00 pound to get on the film's C.D.'s a beautiful South and I will in their C.D.'s at the time is for you one song will be gone by a whole album and holy friend of the show Hello Ian Just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in by Kenny Rogers in the 1st edition will forever be identified with the legendary dream sequence in The Big Lebowski I know exactly the song that you mean even thank you for that suggestion and Gary Painter says it's got to be this and Goodfellas and suggested it in the dominoes with Leila's piano exit as a great suggestion Israel I think that was my exact reaction Stephen thank you keep on coming to find out I'm annoyed never thought of that Oh OK Keep it coming and I will find a witch when we go for before 4 o'clock right finally today we turn to film written and directed by T.V. Presenter and comedian Simon Amstell this bittersweet comedy tells the true story of Benjamin in the title played by Colin Morgan a rising. Film a rising star filmmaker who's thrown into emotional turmoil on the brink of premiering his 2nd film when Billy his hard partying publicist played by just screen introduces him at a gig to a mesmerizing for his musician called Noah certain this is the award winning Benjamin noted that this is the shocking never had no or nor rights nor a bunch of hey listen it's from a gay man and you're really good at singing regulations Thanks for the kill unless you or your very playing very tight very solid. And your French tales are seconds left. I'm a big fan of them as. No stars he needs a kick into going to involve us the government is not. A felony Georgette's. You should come to a screening with me basements and yes I'll need a phone and a phone person what about my inability to love I'm fine now I write none is a bit of a depression. Are you hungry vitiate baby rubber and standing on top and but it isn't me that I know that is 10 paces I'm thinking it's too much for my. Earth just it's I'm thinking things have better dumplings Well we should get on planes and you act on things I didn't yeah I don't think I contemplate again I see the benefit cult are barbaric life yeah OK and in the front yes great yes some ways. That was respect Jessica rain cold Morgan Phoenix Bruce and Jewel fried in a moment from Benjamin Allison kick us off you know where you Robin that was a. Clip I think to so highly Benjamin's awkwardness where you each charmed by I was I mean was going in with you know sort of middling expectations because the new is only a 3 minute Well it sounds a bit thin you to send in an autobiographical is way over I was completely charmed by and particularly by Colin Morgan who please the the Benjamin of the title yeah I didn't know what to expect us. Saw this film I don't know what to expect with it certainly as a start the film but as it grew I got more and more drawn and Stephen you're not generally amount a few words in your notes about this for me said you were struggling to find anything positive to see unusual yeah I hate to be hate to be the negative one and whenever you talk to the producers of the sure they always see you know it's good if you can find positive things to say and I completely agree with that in this or Crick they just sleep so moving doesn't say anything. So when it finished I was sitting there notepad pen in hand just thinking for ages I can't think of anything I like to. I think Colin Morgan is a really good actor he was and the B.B.C.'s Marilyn a few years ago that often members not sure in the fall would you and understand of like them and everything of cinnamon and if you think about it he's quite a good stand in for Simon I'm still physically I just didn't find him funny. And part of that might be because I hate cringe comedy and that clip was perfect that clip sums up the movie paraphilias is a very cringe almost every scene is him seeing something that's completely Congi and that's definite My bike you have lots of negative things about the last film and but and then one morning. I just. The thing about this film as I wasn't sure a lot of time if I was supposed to be laughing so there'd be something or court or some comment or some joke and I would think OK it was a suppose that's what was I supposed to be a laugh and then find that funny it was a serious comment whereas when you watch some of the Alan Partridge you're completely completely nor the bits I mean be funny so I was kind of the last year I was I was drawn to very quickly Alison as I said to you earlier on I think because that was on the strength of the performances yeah definitely I mean I know what Stephen means I mean he's sort of using you know film is a theater piece ation you know he's talking about you know he said these inability to find love and you know he's talking about somebody C.D.'s things you know heartbreak in the past but making jokes all of them he had in the air and you need to sort of can disagree India sales to that to win and get into it as you see and then you know if Eely gallops along we've got more on that because our reporter Sean Senate spoke to Director Andres or Simon Amstell recently and and asked him how the film too cheap I think I started writing about 5 years ago and. It's really about. What was wrong with me in my twenty's so I guess I've been thinking about that for quite a while and then finally we got the money to make it and it now exists so what's it like to look back in your twenty's the only way you know how people get these days sometimes you know cringe and then you get like Septic Yes I think I think that's probably what happened making this film is kind of horrifying I mean I was such an anxious lunatic and I did really didn't know what I was doing and then I suppose writing this I figured out what was wrong with me and so this level of self-awareness developed and as well as gaining a film I also got better. But I think you're right. Well it helps to see things start yeah I think I I think it's therapeutic and I enjoy problem solving. And it's then fun to get through talk to the costume designer and the composer and put the whole thing together I really enjoy that. But the casting. Call would please a rough. Approximation version of you yeah well he played a. I guess he kind of plays me in my late twenty's and. Because I was kind of doing his own thing as well I wasn't sad the monitor waiting for calling to good impression of me I waited or I was only waiting for something funny and authentic to happen and it was such a relief to find him because he's so funny naturally and you never feel like he's trying to be funny he's always you always feel that you really care about him and. He directed this yeah I really like here I feel like having done a bit of acting I know the problems I know the anxieties they'll be feeling so I feel like I can be quite helpful and often why I learned really is that they don't really need my help the one time that I almost messed up the whole thing was in a scene with Colin Morgan and this beautiful French article Fenix Prasada and I went in and had this crazy idea I mean I just had an idea about how the scene could be improved and I made it so much worse so after a couple of dates I went back to them and they said Forget everything you know what you know you're doing please forget that I'm here. So intriguing. Characters on screen struggle with the idea of of intimacy and I wonder I mean do you have a perspective on how social media has changed that perhaps made it even more difficult for people to to interact in a normal ordinary human way yeah that's slightly I mean I was having problems before social media. But I think I eventually got to that I mean that's what the film is about really it's about somebody who can't just be with another human being that feels like it has to be someone better and I guess I understood that what was more familiar to me than intimacy was making myself appear very special for an audience so that I could be loved by them and then just avoid any actual human contact because that was too scary so in the film Benjamin meets this French guy and very patiently and express our character just like breaks him down over the film until he's able to love and be loved and we was really struggling to cast this character it was really difficult and then I realized that. The problem was he was an English. And English character who was free. And I thought I don't think we're going to find him so we went to France and found effects and also Finnick skin saying yes thankfully Yeah that was the thing you know you need to find somebody who's beautiful who's loose and I think he didn't the audition that was amazing was he took his top of. It said in the script character then takes their top of everyone else mind it and he just did it and I thought this is the guy with the old Simon a bit embarrassed by a guy taking top of I mean that the current one was a bit. Of trouble to. Put all that made pressure Dave into it. He just he was just able to do that stuff without any self-consciousness. You know in your movie in Benjamin's film goes that is the London Film Festival gets reviewed by. And marked with a quite vicious about it yeah I mean how do you feel about your work going on and being well it's different I think to Benjamin feelings on the subject both of Benjamin's life and death because he doesn't really have anything other than his image of himself as a brilliant filmmaker so when that image is destroyed he's lost he has nothing I am now in my life have a boyfriend I feel grounded in some kind of security I really liked the film I you know I we watched a lot of film festival and people laughed and everyone had a great time people felt things. That plus the fact that I already felt leaving yet it's sweet satisfied that we've done the thing we wanted to do makes me feel like it doesn't really matter too much what happens now I feel right better to get better get 5 stars and. Sean so that they're talking to the director and writer of new release Benjamin Simon Amstell. We can tell from that this is although it's not about him if you like it's a very personal film to Simon did that give strength as a story Alison because we felt it was clearly something you know came from within and in a really was a personal story I think so because I had to sort of roll on Misty about it you know even in his most embarrassing moments you know he his script means that you know you'd kind of laughing with the candidate to know them so it is no it is vicious the humor as you might remain Simon Amstell deploying and when he was host of Never Mind The Buzzcocks I mean this is this is an altogether more mature Simon Amstell a lot of he became due to people and that's what charming about him who should have got Preston from the ordinary boys. Going to review my deliveries quite forgiven for Stephen what I liked about it and you sort of awkwardness the comedy but there was the scenes with his friend Stephen Joel fry you really want to do stand up comedy was clearly on the age of the number of different issues. That struck me was Phil suit trued so real because I've been there I've been know in a situation where somebody of a sudden starts again a bit the darkness hits their eyes and they start go a little bit aggressive and it's a little bit unpleasant and you have to immediately remove that person from the company and that's what struck me is because it came across a small real was it was did that work for you did not pass but yeah there's a lot in this that struck me as as really about real I mean when I read about this film I thought oh this is going to be about me because when I was in my younger years I was sort of socially a bit awkward and a bit anxious and maybe overthe I mean I still think of it and so the lead character I really do quite a lot was just struck me as listening to that clip I really just where Simon Amstell played himself because he's such a funny guy is just something about he's he's got this grief laugh his laugh is much of clubs turn away there when the cops were playing I liked him as a panel host but everyone on T.V. And sometimes a lot of people have said that this film or remind them of Woody Allen films there's a lot similar is there and what you find with your own films is the best ones were with deeply themself I just think Simon Amstell should apply himself and convince them and I will call Morgan played Benjamin and he was he was brilliant in our so the cast actually that you managed to put together for this and a chance that was in that as well and just securing great performance and performances yeah and he's obviously a few favors hasn't stopped him you know satirizing and having a laugh and a meaning foreign mentioned in the scene with Mark commode in it I mean that's a very funny one when the viewing has failed and you know in a such a you know in the a show which is obviously not as good as ours but that's. The money and. Chancellors plesiosaur desperately love the director and there's a good scene where somebody is doing Morton down sacked which is just so I mean nothing really all fall but we've all been there and Matt Lucas little tiny cameo He's the editor you can blink it became a mess and but these were the little nuggets that I quite enjoyed what Simon directed this for what do you make of the direction of Stephen. I thought it was a bit flat I thought the film didn't really have much energy or life. Although I have suddenly thought something I liked about or he wriggles before to be very sure of so here we go it was them I did enjoy the can a little digs you we call them at the can a pretentious are it's apes who are a bit fi can you know the Forno reach other parties and see or your film is amazing and someone see you fell asleep you don't really watch it you know like in a fake praise a loved all that sort of stuff and Jessica. Yeah she was very good as that as the publicist the kind of the publicist who does a lot of that sort of stuff so that what I was what about the direction that she's clearly he's been successful as a writer in the past what about as a director he didn't do anything fancy you know just went kind of from soup to nuts and still Woody keep things moving along there was lots of nice light and she lots of good corn childless and above all you know he came in under 90 minutes so that's just peer review you have to look through the film out and you enjoy the fun I find I mean and I saw at the Glasgow Film Festival and again it was a morning screening bit of course with the best of all it's always a public screening and it got a lot of big laughs Good OK well let's sum up then what to what would you say would you would you recommend this film Alison start with you yet wouldn't give it 5 stars Saudi Simon but I'll give it 4 stars don't recommend it he's at home listening on his laptop as well as we speak Stephen what you think. Either one of the 2 damning saw was to see I will maybe try and revisit in a few years to see if I missed something when I watched the 1st time it wasn't for me. Actually But let me just go back about one question I want to get before we go to recommendations Who do you think this film and appeals to Steve awkward 20 somethings cinephiles probably wouldn't recommend it to my friends and family who don't watch a lot of films I think if you're the sort of person who's really heavily into films and you're an awkward socially anxious or person you might relate to Allison would seem maybe you know Daniel E G F T film has crowd channel for kids of their own spectrum Benjamin's in cinemas and on demand to model is to figure 15 Thank you Allison wrote Thank you Stephen Carter before we let you escape We're going to ask you for any further recommendations that you have of things to watch this weekend Steven to Beltre Syria or one under the Silverlake stars under Garfield who has excellent bed here in this film. Before So he kind of is this young guy he's wandering around I think it's early and it remained the film reminded me of films like vertigo China tone Mohan Lake hopeful sort of drive sort of so it's a very strange film it's one of those films where the lead character discovers a conspiracy that he sees something odd and they get obsessed with against the truth very very strange thought was going to hear it was completely drawn and so this one too is a film called Triple frontier or Net Flix Ben Affleck Oscar Isaac Charlie Hunnam really good cast action Thor directed by G.C. Chant or not I will name he directed margin call all is lost and a nonviolent your very good director 3 for 3 she asked me OK a triple from 200 Silver Lake Stevens recommendations Allison going for a No Did it go showing as part of the classical Comedy Festival to mortal and it's fittest Beulah's Dior Ferris John Hughes called the day. Castle Matthew George Rick and the tapes of all just a really lovely film so that's one of the Glasgow comedy.
