Radio Scotland travel and trying to Scotland's where there are largely dry night ahead for more slows of minus 2 in the countryside plus 2 Celsius in the ten's and cities tomorrow a lot of fine dry and sunny weather that cloud will thicken from the West during the D. A touch milder at 8 to 11 Celsius It's 9 minutes past 5 listening to B.B.C. Radio Scotland thanks very much London this is news Dr I'm Bill White for the order of hearts on budget says the fan who struck her boss Neil Lennon with a coin during last night's And but a Darby will be identified and banned for life police are investigating the incident as well as reports that the Heart School keeper was punched by a supporter one man's already been charged with assaulting an assistant referee are sports news correspondent Chris McLaughlin is in Edinburgh for us to tell us about what happened well it was a pretty job game for us than for most usual face the a fear as the Edinburgh Darby tends to be but as you see it looked as though midway through the game the hearts called keepers are the Knicks la Molle was struck by a fire and parted by a fire and by the looks of things there at the end of the game just after Hearts had a goal Choctaw off for offside the Habs manager Neil Lennon was struck by a coin that appeared to come from the hearts and he crumpled to the floor in the technical area and he had to receive some treatment. All saw as you see confirmation that too much officials what all saw struck by objects not confirmation coming from the Scottish E.F.E. So pretty disturbing scenes as you can imagine and scenes that obviously have dominated the news to be and what's been said Well as you can imagine both managers were asked that both the the incidents after the game as a see it as a game ended nil nil that wasn't really much talk about the ball so this was what both managers have to had to say about the incident after the game 1st of all Neil Lennon then next week Levine. They own the jaw so all thankfully there's no sort of damage done. And see every. One except they will say I was winning the Treble I wasn't. Taken for 90 minutes but of course anyone and. There's no place for the N N OK I understand tensions are high tensions are high on the field dangers are high off the field. I don't want to see that you know I think . Things go too far and hopefully we'll find both of the people who are involved in these things and deal with well this isn't the 1st time Neil Lennon has had problems at Tynecastle No it's not back in 2011 finalist charged with assault after confronting Neil Lennon on the touchline at Tynecastle back then he was the manager of Celtic of course he's also had death as he said Boots sent to him in the poorest this is his agent Martin Reilly. As an Irish Catholic played for Northern Ireland caps in Long Island played for Leicester never their house will say in 2000 and the mayhem begins and he's been targeted because busy of where he's from. That's exactly. What's the reaction been well as you can imagine pretty much everyone within football has had their say to be probably more importantly both the Hearts owner and barge and the chief executive Leeann Dempster had a meeting to D. They decided to release a joint statement just part of freezing on board said we will succeed in removing the tiny percentage of funds whose behavior spoils the things for the majority of them start as at the 2 clubs are united this kind of behavior is simply not acceptable but I get the feeling tonight Bill that there are those within 3 ball those I've spoken to who believe that it's getting to the point with enough is enough these kind of things are happening all too often Yes You know the authorities in the football clubs condemn them every time it happens but there's a feeling no I think from those within the club that things really have to change how that happens and what it looks like remains to be seen but this that the scenes from taking Castle last night appeared to be some kind of watershed thing for Scottish football sports news correspondent Chris McLaughlin thanks very much. A new campaign has been lost to persuade the people of Scotland to back another referendum on decks that campaigners want what they call a people's vote on the terms of any breaks that deal but the launch has prompted renewed controversy to explain joined by our political editor buying tiller and Boehm we know of the demand for self-styled People's for what was new today we do believe in hundreds of thousands on the streets of London a rally in Edinburgh and the campaign's been going for a while but you know we're beginning to approach what looks like the endgame in the negotiations talk of perhaps a deal within a couple of weeks and so it's understandable that all the campaigns that are surrounding this are giving up and today was the formal launch of a specific campaign targeted upon upon Scotland a civic campaign designed to motivate the people of Scotland to back this but also of course a campaign designed to persuade Scottish politicians not least and particularly in the in the House of Commons to support the idea of holding another referendum it was held bill in the Scottish Poetry Library in Edinburgh it was a decidedly prosaic interpretation of events by the campaigners they said the messenger the promises made with regard to bricks it at the time of the 2016 referendum added up to fiction and it proved now that BRACKS It was more damaging than those who are prepared to advocate it suggest I put to John Edwards who was one of the campaigners for a further referendum that was it justified I said in holding such a 2nd ballot there's all sorts of on imponderables about this none of which you make clear in 2016 so the best thing if you want to get work to find out what the will of the people is and give them the final deal and ask their opinion on your critics your opponents say the people's vote was in 2016 get a sore loser Well the people who say that are all of the people who won't stand by a single thing they said 2016 in terms of access to the single market access the customs union money for the N.H.S. They're the people who've stepped away from their promises because they knew at the time they know now those promises weren't but ultimately a ballot. Would acquire support in the Commons and that's far from done it would bill that's absolutely the case that there are supporters of a further referendum in all parties across the the Commons across Hollywood across the political divide but the Labor leadership say's they are against it they are there perhaps concerned that their supporters in more working class areas of England who voted for leave would resent perhaps the suggestion that they got it wrong and should try again and most importantly of all perhaps the the U.K. Governing Tories against the leadership suddenly are against the idea of a further ballot I spoke to Adam Tompkins who's the Constitution spokesperson for the Scottish conservatives and he's just again the idea I'm not in favor of it where we had a people's vote we had a referendum across the whole of United Kingdom on the 23rd of June 26th in and the question was very simple you want to leave the European Union and want to remain in the European Union and the majority of people voted to leave us what we're doing and there's a particular issue for the S.N.P. There is believe me a couple of elements to that 1st of all they they they point out and they point out repeatedly that Scotland voted to remain 62 percent in Scotland voted to remain and they they say how we have to hold another ballot will that still be overturned if the U.K. Vote comes in the seeking assurances on that they didn't get any frankly today from the campaigners who say this has to be a U.K. Call and that has to take at this stage precedence over the Scottish constitutional position but there's another month which is the argument that the what day that perhaps this could set a precedent for an independence referendum if there has to be a further one that independence does that that have to be won on the Thames of any deal we spoke today to 2 Alex Neil who have voices those concerns but 1st to Mike Russell who's the Constitution Affairs secretary of course we recognise that they have to be protections for Scotland because Scott has already made a decision but at the end of the day if there is to be a people for the S.N.P. Is not going to stand in the way of it if we did it and went to the end of mind and get if that he can fund it and the union has. Well news that disk up Independence and the same way that the so-called people's voice is really a boat stopping breaks that rather than democracy so what do the campaigners see this going next well their option is they present this idea as being a solution to what they see as unlikely and pass over bricks at they think it is feasible that there will be a deal of sorts in the next couple of weeks they wonder whether that gets through the House of Commons given the configuration of the parties there and they say there will then be a search for an escape route various ones of being suggested they say the escape route could be as they call it a people's vote putting the option of the deal the terms of the deal against the idea of remaining in the European Union some other say it should be the terms of the deal worse there's no deal but the campaign is that they were very well adamant that it was the terms of the deal versus remaining in the E.U. At this stage it's hard to see that comes through the House of Commons but they are adamant the campaigners that they are adamant that the momentum is with them political editor Bryan Taylor thanks. Ball it involves putting concrete footings into the same area it involves all sorts of disturbance in a largely understood barrier at the moment where scarce wildlife exists and it would materially damage the whole area the same. Objections could be made couldn't they to wind farms for instance with roads and concrete footings and so on yes and I have. I don't sink when far cycling is always terribly appropriate when farmstand put tons and tons of carbon dioxide and other noxious gases out into the air when farms don't bitch really explode. The people that I have spoken to admit today that is not a fair representative sample of the local population but that is quite a lot of people here that I'm not in favor of this project what's your next move on . Which is down to freezing if not lower even in towns and cities they'll be a frost and some mist and shallow fog patches to winds generally light so to tomorrow and it's a dry fine start to the day with the any early mist tending to lift and it stays dry and fine for most of Scotland for most of the day thanks to a ridge of high pressure sitting overhead bringing us largely dry unsettled conditions through the course of the day you'll notice the cloud tending to thicken and that is because we've got an approaching weather system just turning the sunshine a wee bit hazy but it should stay dry during daylight hours temperatures similar to today at around $7.00 to $10.00 Celsius Now tomorrow night it all goes downhill really with cloud sickening and rain arriving this is all part of a deep area of low pressure moving in off the Atlantic it's actually got the remnants of what was Hurricane Oskar within it so a wet and windy spell of weather to come overnight Friday and into Saturday Saturday will be a wet day persistent rain at times the Met Office yellow warning is in force for a good part of western Scotland the winds key as well strong to go forth from the southwest the only upside it will be mild for many of us temperatures in the teens that's the forecast for. On digital revealed $92.00 to $95.00 F.M. And each one all media and we've B.B.C. Radio Scotland this is news Dr I'm Bill White for to Westminster there where the sports minister Tracy Croce has just resigned over the delays to cut the maximum stick for fixed odds betting terminals a response to course will occur only joins me now neck as it is just out in the last few minutes was all about Yes So David auction to the maximum bet on fixed odds betting terminals was high street gambling machines to campaigners think. I'm very damaging to the gambling industry the the the government has. Already said it reduced the maximum bet on those machines from $100.00 pounds to 2 pounds the question was weighing the had been a widespread belief that Westminster would happen next year. That has been delayed till October next year from air later in the year as had been the initial plan and what's happened now is it's become massive. Disquiet on Conservative benches about that decision has been somebody who for quite hard for for the maximum bet to be reduced the had been speculation the government might change its mind on this it's not it's decided that he's sticking by its guns just now so Ms Crouch has resigned I don't think however that even when we hear from his coach later about her reasons that will be the end of things because a number of Conservative M.P.'s are unhappy about this there is widespread speculation that some backbenchers will try and force the government's hand in future legislation on the Finance bill which is due in the Commons in the next few weeks so the government under a lot of pressure over the US it's lost a minister and it could lose a vote will have also heard earlier today about an investigation and out and buying over suspected criminal offenses committed during the E.U. Referendum or do we know about that yet so the electoral commission has been looking into loans made to the leave the E.U. Campaign around $8000000.00 pounds in total now those loans are said to have come from AT and banks are his group of insurance companies we've had this quite remarkable letter from the European sorry from the electoral commission today saying that in its words it has reasonable Grange to suspect that the money came from Coles Empire miscible sources and says Mr Banks and his colleague. Liz Boki knowingly concealed the circumstances under which that money was provided or I had reason to believe that the During the concealed those circumstances they're under U.K. Law loans and donations must come from possible sources basically not overseas or from foreign funders the National Crime Agency now says it is going to look Ken to those as findings from the electoral commission. We heard from Mr Banks today we have he's out the country but we have heard from him in a statement in which he says that he's confident that an investigation will put an end to what he calls ludicrous allegations he insists he's a UKI taxpayer that he's never received any foreign donations and he's accusing the Electoral Commission of acting under 4 he says is intense political pressure from anti breaks supporters Now I mentioned that another senior campaign figure from leave you Liz Boney was all sure if aired to the N.C.A. By their late through commission and we heard from her this afternoon I welcome our being postponed National Crime Agency because to date always seems to me that talk mission is a biased approach to be surely concluded to demonstrate a crime being committed and confident all the matter will be completely resolved to be exonerated and. Not quite as all this important will leave don't you where not the main breaks are supporting campaign before the U.S. And that was vote leave led by the likes of Michael Gove and Bottas Johnson leave the E.U. Was kind of the 2nd group it was Nigel Farage and and people like that. The big question today is what this investigation says about the result and some how some poor UN peace have been saying that it's a cosy into question the result and potentially that breaks it should even be put on hold pending the outcome of the inquiry one of them is their same P.N.P. Custody Blackman we heard from her this afternoon saying that if people are fighting to be breaking electoral law then that is an issue that that you need to look at the possible validity of the results and I suspect the government will reject that argument completely they have been very clear that Rex is happening in that the result was completely valid but there will be a lot of attention on this. On this case not just because of the brakes issue but also because of the whole issue of Elect off funding off elections and referenda McCurdy it was Mr Thank you. The Transport Secretary Michael Matheson says there is no definitive date for the opening of a Dean's new bypass the project was due to open in the spring but was pushed back to autumn this year Miss piece of in told the Sutton in that the contract to is no unable to provide an opening date due to defects on a new bridge over that of a dawn which will bowl reports. The operating bypass is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Scotland with a price tag of our own 745000000 pounds the 28 mile route was expected to open in the spring but bad weather and the collapse of the contractor Karelian push that back to autumn this year this afternoon Transport Secretary Michael Matheson told M S P's it could be delayed even further after defects to the new bridge over the river Dawn proved more extensive than 1st thought it was King hard to repair the defects and on Monday of this week the contract reported it was targeting this embargo or paying the for the whole road. However they were unable to pervade a definitive date for the opening of this section as they had on a number of factors which could influence this state including technical issues and other physical factors such as the weather. The delays have been frustrating for drivers and businesses in the Northeast pole how David runs a taxi firm in Stonehaven he claims he's Time to put the brakes on expansion plans because we've got to allow so much extra time to go to and from star named the airport 45 minutes to an hour if we were on that road we were doing in about 1718 minutes we could double our current capacity with our current fleet of vehicles with that road i Phone So we call it really grow at the moment without putting lots of a Chevy Cruze on because of time restraints and how long it takes us drive in that haven't seen through that traffic which we when I was really horrendous that presence on the Stonehaven to creeps in section of the road is complete but contract issues have prevented it from being opened it's frustrating I think what makes it more frustrating is the fact that we know it's finished and it's done it's not a case it's an ongoing project and there's an end date it's finished from here to the airport so we could get on and use that road is the fact that we can't use an incredibly great road that's finished which is the much for freight in that space. Michael Matheson says For this section to open a change needs to be made to the original contract and the contractor hasn't agreed there's no time for the contract to stop deliberating and start acting you know has to take the nest the steps to open the majority of the short and let the people of the Northeast enjoy the benefits they have been so patiently and test of Peter ne Labor M.S.P. Lewis McDonald is critical of how the contract was set up the rest of the group could be open if only the government is giving yourself permission to come. Well the contractor to do the contract there not only has the contract or refused to do that the conduct of the house and even discussed with the influencers that tells you how truly a contractual set up is that the government has no means to make this hard on we are we're left with this hugely expensive piece of infrastructure gold with public money not being used because the government doesn't get it I come to Jesus to me. It's been nearly 4 years since work began on the operating bypass for drivers in the Northeast the wait continues which will bell reporting. Staff at Google offices around the world are taking part in an unprecedented series of walk in protest at the technology companies to mint of one ethnic minorities protesters want to commitment to end inequality in pay and opportunity these staff leaving Google's offices in New York explained why they were taking part to support all of my noble was a good because it's the right thing because it is the important thing to. Know what you're if you're writing. Then you have. Time to get to me ma'am or no matter where you work or technology correspondent really kettling Jones joins me now really was the but well the background is a long concern amongst many Gustaf about cases of sexual harassment and racial discrimination but it all came to a head last week there was an article in The New York Times saying that very senior executive Andy Rubin had left the company 4 years ago. Amidst accusations of sexual misconduct gone with a $90000000.00 payoff now he disputed the allegations he denied any wrongdoing but Google kind of. Accepted that this was the case that you had these pay off and they had been looking at this case of sexual harassment and following that the company revealed that $48.00 executives had left without a pay or play off over the previous couple of years themselves. Over charges of sexual harassment so a big problem and people got together around the world to protest so what do they actually want their employees whether going to our list of demands they say 1st of all that they've been talking about this for a long time and they've been hoping that leadership would act and they haven't acted so they've they've they've got to do something. One of their principal demands is an end to what's called Forced arbitration whereby you have to sort of get together with the company and agree a deal basically. And that's seen as stopping any of this sort of coming out or coming to court seen as of defending google again and he called actions and they want further action on on equal pay for. For for women and racial minorities I mean they have a problem which is constant across the technology industry that they're very. Male dominated and you know there are a few ethnic minorities and Google has been trying to do something about it but it's stuff that doesn't believe it's really done enough but industrial action is pretty rare in the tech sector as an abscess I mean this is I'm president I can't remember anything like this particularly in the Silicon Valley companies and it was a very kind of Google form of industrial action in the in London because it's raining outside they didn't actually step outside they gathered in in a in a sort of lecture theatre and had a meeting there and you couldn't exactly say that Gu production ground to a whole but it was impressive and it did involve large numbers of the staff it seemed that around the world you know quite substantial numbers did did down to that for for quite a while of course Google search Well Google has been trying to be as. Peaceable as possible with these protesters as really almost encouraged in the put out a statement saying they welcomed what was happening they were facilitating it that the protesters had come up with some really good ideas and that they would talk to them about implementing them so do not trying to be a talk confrontational here hoping that it can reach some kind of agreement on Jones thanks. To news drive on B.B.C. Radio Scotland 11 minutes to 6 the headlines Hearts and Hibs shouldst joint statement saying they condemn the incidents at last night's end but a Darby you. Radio Scotland travel on B.B.C. To Scotland tonight at half past 7 it's timeline with sitting on a lot of marks or in the studio with me no Hi Guys what's in the surely Hi guys I am well aware talk of social media and looking at the impact that it has on younger people and their mental health are these are that is there's been a huge rise in students in Scotland seeking mental health support and some experts say that could be done into the 24 hour social media bubble that they live in where people exposed to criticism bullying abuse and so we're going to be speaking to 2 young people from very different points of view and given that social media is very much a way of life for that age group it is very difficult to opt out of it we're going to try and explore how it can be used to more positive use and today is World beacon day there I don't know whether you were up in the canteen earlier below but to the County right in my own kitchen scraps there to be fair did you bring out a meat based dish of pizza oh yes I was a cheese will be cheese on that line had vegan cheese in the canteen which is very nice yeah so our county not cheese. You can see. When so entirely we can today but we are not in the program we'll be having a look at the experiences of one woman who's been vegan for 18 years so before it was easy to be vegan we've been out on the streets of Glasgow giving people a taste of some of you can food and busting a few of the myths surrounding it but we'll also be looking at the more serious side of it about whether more people becoming vegan might be in danger of of harming our agricultural industry as well so we will be looking at all sides of the Deacon debate Yeah we're speaking to Ford Kiernan and Greg Hempel who just announced their new Still Game sure it's the high draw next year the final final fail one when Vic and kind of over the New York Jack and Victor are supposed to finally go into retirement as the tickets go and see what's more they were telling is why they've decided to do this and as if they couldn't get any better we're going to entice you in with a puppy. To the puppy but what's the puppy did you all get up Poppy bought a muscle and sitting on Johnny thanks very much. A study into whether sea birds can avoid hitting wind turbines is to be carried out off the coast 11 tarred by an farm was the focus of a lengthy planning battle involving Donald Trump who argued it would spoil the view from his golf resort many previous wildlife impact studies have focused on proposed wind farms rather than ones already up and running Charles Nathan is a senior concerned conservation plan a piece Gotland the Vattenfall proposal that they put out for for people to come forward with their ideas of studying sea birds and how they interact with with offshore wind turbines and window race it's crucially important to really understand what birds are doing when they come across a turbine when they're leaving their nest sites during the breeding season and heading out to forage out at sea to find prey and they're there to fish for food to bring back for themselves but also for their young How come we don't know not sort of information well I guess the industry itself the sector the offshore wind sector is fairly new Obviously we've had projects in the water now for over 10 years but unfortunately there hasn't been the level of research that required to really fully understand behavior but also I guess the technology itself in terms of being able to track in close proximity to turbines it has only really coming coming to the fore now what sort of technology is that so previously been a couple of projects where they've used high definition cameras to be able to record in flight actually the cameras based on the turbines and selves and they're recording all or flight activity in and around the turbines but also things like laser range finders which come from military operations where you can actually log on to an individual bird and follow it for for some time to gain an understanding of it. Flight Behavior but also things like flight height and speed is the most any suspicion that we are losing birds to tar Bines certainly it's a hugely complex issue and there's a huge degree of uncertainty given given the lack of empirical data actual real data of birds flying around turbines so. What the science is showing us now everything most of the impact assessment for offshore turbines or offshore when wind farms are based on modeled estimations of what the impacts are and certainly in some instances offshore wind can be incredibly harmful for for sea birds not only on the individual level but at a population scale as Charles Nathan a senior conservation planner artist P B Scotland scientists say they can see whales from space not whales the place but whales the mammals and see them close enough clearly enough to cut them it's all part of a new approach from the British Antarctic Survey using imagery from the world view 3 satellite or joy no by Dr Jennifer Jackson senior research scientist at the British Antarctic Survey Hello good evening So what's actually being done. Well because we can now look at the ocean with this very high resolution imagery we have been looking for whales different whale species in different habitats around the world in order to now find out how we could identify them and classify. The confidence in our sightings on the imagery so we can actually see individual pectoral fins on the whales and their tail flukes sometimes blow and we can see different colors on them so this is a 1st attempt to try and classify the quality of the sightings and look at whales in different habitats and look at different species so you're able to differentiate between species which after all can look quite similar for this 1st study we've really focused on areas where we just have one species in each area so that we can get the best possible chance at our classification it's going to be quite a long process to develop the technique to be able to clearly distinguish different species because even though we have quite high resolution sometimes the whales are under the surface and sometimes you have quite choppy seas so it's it's a 1st pass to really characterize each species before we try and distinguish them the goal of course is to try to count them and do that in remote places where humans really can't get to I can see that be a big advantage to sort some of these places a lot a little more but quite hostile but will you be able to do you think to actually track individual whales and see what they do. Sadly not that would require incredibly high resolution which even We're currently working at 31 centimeters which means it's enough that we can see features on the backs of the whales but you would need to be a vastly higher resolution to do that but what is really valuable about this is that we can go to places as we said very remote areas where we really have a very poor understanding of whale distributions and how they're using the habitat and whether they're recovering from whaling or this is just the Antartica or all over the globe Well we would pick areas where they really under study didn't try to look in a particularly coastal areas where the water is quite calm so for example Patagonia at the tip of South America is potentially a very good candidate place for using this technique because people don't understand much about whale distribution in those places there's some critically endangered populations thought to be using the area so we could go to those kinds of remote lines and and start counting miles there and what some will species travel a long distance don't they and sort of on your migrations and so on yes it's to most whale species most baling whale species make long seasonal migrations and so will this technology be able to see ultimately I hope they do that where they go along that takes a those sorts of questions it will give us a better sense of where they go so there are certain areas where we just don't know where for example the chill a person who write well this is a critically endangered population of southern right whales we don't really know where they're carving grounds are of Chile so this is the kind of technique that could allow us to try and find those carving grounds and by using satellite imagery Yeah I think that it was true of gray whales wasn't in the Pacific along California Well yes great so we've we've looked at their carving leggins actually their migration question is is fascinating you may know that they make giant migrations around the Pacific Rim but in our case we were able to see them in their water there. They're carving lagoons in Mexico and they look quite nicely distinctive on the satellite imagery thank you very much for joining us this evening still to Jennifer Jackson senior research scientist at the British Antarctic Survey on the way that they are no able to visualize wheels from space. On it it's all revealed in 1980 to $95.00 and each one of the medium we B.B.C. Radio Scotland.
