Took me away from the cardio he banned me from treadmills and said All you going to be doing from now is what I say and it was weight and I just loved it yeah I fell in love with it and I fell I think it was my kind of significance from all the people in the gym all the women in. Because I was I was that was the man bit and I was doing my way and and I was like look at me gives you a bit of an identity doesn't it yeah so I threw a pall Yeah I think I started because I remember reading this like article on line from this fitness magazine in America and it was saying why women should train like men and why we should be lifting weights and doing less cardio and focusing on the heavy lifting and I remember my gym at the time put on like free workshops for deadlifts and a full squats so yes I was so lucky I know so lucky so obviously the king being I was literally fastpass and signed up and I let really women in the workshop so it was all of the guys and I was I knew well yeah you got that and they were like oh you want you to like white sounds like no bearing on give me the heavyweights and it was like it was so empowering and truly just by spending those 2 little workshops with that. I was so empowered and I felt so much more confident and comfortable in the weights area that I just began experiments like I know like you I did I know I sound and I didn't have a p.t. And I know that you were like all about online research and funding everything about it and your list of exercises exactly I feel like I probably have a journey which a few people can relate to and I started lifting weights because I'm still girls Instagram Yes being exactly the same Ok I thought you don't need to do I thought you just of cardio and I saw these girls in Instagram with nice tone legs and I was like well they're doing all they do in school I mean I should be doing school so I actually did it because I was following the crowd but I actually remember that when I 1st lifting weights I was the only go going into the ladies action and I actually used to get my dumbbells and go and hide behind the cable machine and do it was maybe you could see me because I was so embarrassed because literally at this time since like 4 and a half years ago guys it wasn't cool Yes I'm cool too white says no ladies in there and in the end I made friends this guy called Brand shop to brand and he. Ran and. Ran so. He introduced me to like how to actually lift with confidence then I got out of my little corner behind the cable machine and I was lifting weights all the boys in the test last as you hit I remember when I fist I follow in you and you knew a lot about way I knew you had the friend brain yeah I used to be so jealous I fight why do I not have a guy to train with like. I know what he was a lot my friend whereas I used to get the guys at my drama school at the time coming to me being like telly can we come and train with you and can you show us stuff today was I was more competent weight training than they were by the time like you know off to like 6 months or so I was the one always going to the gym and they're like oh Tony can we come to the gym with you and I was like. You wanna come train with May Now Dia Yeah it was some mistakes you goals made when you start lifting weights Tal when I started in weights mistakes. I think the mistake for me was person they training in a way that I didn't want to because I felt like I should if that makes doing such exercises that I thought I should be doing and that now I don't do because I don't enjoy it for example for example doing lots of chess stuff like I would spend I would submit my so in weightlifting you tend to split your training up into body parts and I would be really disciplined about this and I would have a leg day and then on day and back day and a chest day and I was asked to spend so much time trying to my apps and I haven't done that for so long now but I do remember those chest I remember the 1st time I did my chest walk out and you had to put a key code in to leave my chin and I remember not even like shaking you know like death trying to punch in the code and then crashing and I took my friend George at the time George a shout out see if you're listening and I remember with my foot she was like Tele will have you done to me. To be training my guys and they were training chest it was like it was a chest Mondays. International that Monday is international chess day on a Monday oh yeah that's a very gym thing but that's a very broad gym thing but yeah it's not just Mondays as I think I don't do those I mean little me about you I also some I used to have like a 5 or 6 day split when it comes to why it's not so not some mistake but for May Now that would be a mistake because I've got the times now and I used to that's another point 0 used to train for like 2 hours like this time we have went to the gym together I was so what's going to be helpful yes I am really just like oh let's try this exercise use on Instagram let's I mean I feel like I got to that because my p.t. It was rep and everything else so a rep is like the amount of times you'll do an exercise Sonam go mega fast you is go into so you train really slowly now that's something I've never left may I say to do everything really slow having control that is a very Don Sorry thing you know my background is. Dancing and singing You're always meant to like really be aware of your body and feel everything and feel every muscle and I think that's a skill that I've transferred into my training so let's talk about why we love what is so amazing about what's latest I mean with the benefit because I think you get like more bang for your book than and. That's a kind of actually how it's my clients Yes So although nowadays I like to really switch up the trade in because I have to fill a really decent amount of muscle mass over the yeahs and if you've got like 30 minutes in the gym and you want to you know say you will say your goal right now is 5 law and if you only have 30 minutes in the gym you're going to get so much mall out to do in 30 minutes of weight training quality weight training session then you will get it when it's on the on the treadmill so that I think that's like the best thing in it for me so. If I do you only have a little bit of time I'll just pull full body Sessions again for and him feel fantastic after it why did you get more from lifting weights 30 minutes and you go from being on the treadmill for 30 minutes or so on a treadmill I'm going to put this in perspective of kind of fat loss this is something I have to speak to my clients about all of the time and. If they were to come in and go on the treadmill for 30 minutes I don't know how many calories that would say you would been on the treadmill 5300. $5300.00 an. Amount while sure when you jump off the treadmill absolutely nothing happens to your body and you just kind of it's just not great not great at all but when you do f. Full weight weight training session even if it is 30 minutes you will get and you metabolism boost and fiery and you build in muscle mass and almost got the more calories you're going to bin while she sat in tray so when you walk out of that gym and you stop training and you'll still your body still having this Mager effect and you still actually kind of like banning calories. Fruit for all the rest of the day yeah absolutely I think it's important this is the one thing I would totally agree to the thing like my clients as well it's it's building a strong foundation so it's like. We've got a guest on later on and I'm going to use a quote that she shared on social media before which I love once said a friend of hers another trainer said for example a lot of people just naturally go to running to training but instead he should be training to run and a lot of that comes through building. The strength that you need to to avoid injury to get better at your sport and to to in Hans the rest of your training and I think like you said it's really important to understand that connection with your body and your muscles and your why it's so much more effective to hit every muscle in the body and in that recovery period that is when I was had that's when the magic happens so I'm sure in the back how it's all through. It's a lot that comes with nutrition but when you pay those $2.00 things together amazing things can happen and I think going on from the health benefits of lifting weights of course it helps reduce the risk of injury in your other forms of training but something which a lot of people don't know is that lifting weights can actually help especially as a woman improve your bone density and when we hit menopause ladies we may have I have risked osteoporosis demand so it's really important to try and improve that bone density and then of course as we said reduce the risk of injury support your posture I know I personally work for a lot of people in the city whacking at desks and we spend an all full of time training that post area so that back between the shoulders that whole post area chain because if you're a desk those muscles are extended and we need to work on strengthening them say things to think about if you do have a desk job doing. Things feel bleats your hamstrings back up a body as well and you'll call when people set their goals nowadays it's often I want to be told I live she going to say it's the muscle tone that people want is actually just pill muscle and they get that definition tone is a thing you can't tone a muscle you build a muscle and that you're doing throughout Yeah and I just say a little Many myth yesterday here is you don't have to do 20 reps to tone your muscle do you 8 to 12 reps to build the muscle not as well actually tones that just . The lifetime of a rat. I have no say calcium and well I think that's just get tiring out like it's not really a thing with building muscle and then you'll losing fat to see make the muscle more visible. And the mole the mole muscle we have the moral the body can tell say yeah the lie it was I like such low like we said in that recovery phase you'll replenishing your glycogen stores in your muscle so you know he's you. It's a good question and you know it's actually a legitimate question Jack but you know what the thing that I love about David doing yoga is that he actually Gary Barlow recently as well yes they they are breaking down helping to break down the stigma that men shouldn't do yoga Likewise I like when I see obviously you guys do to women see women lifting weight because it's like breaking down the stigma that women should stay away from weight so this is my version of this kind of mesh Yes I mean do you men need to do more yoga women these the full weights so what's your training routine like now Ok so it kind of varies depending on time but I try to write like all of us by try to stay as consistent as possible I mix in. 3 days of weight training 2 days of sort of cardio and some of that will be steady state and some of it will be needed a radio call that it training to training today was it when you go middle 100 meters tens of meters 3 and yes you start with a 1000 and you work your way down to just really intense you know about it rock Yes No I was going to say all male Yeah on a scale male was really good because you can kind of it's I love using this comes who's going to work and yeah the skill male is a treadmill that you sort of you have to generate the power for it yeah which is why I love the resistance can you know when that whole one thing on it you'll moving the belts about you know exactly which is more like. Running outside and it's an accident. And so it's better if your knees and your joints I much prefer but it isn't really living there right hi I'm just one of them and you can do all sorts of things I went to class recently mountain climbers on the yeah. Yeah you can do all sorts of all sorts of stuff I think it's night to me just a bit more exciting than a treadmill and I'm more into you and better for there actually got a few joints and yeah so what Shane is doing is clearly working for her she's like a beautiful strong woman so I think we need to be learning from her can you share the re tips for people who want to start lifting weights yes so I would say the number one I think the number one thing you need to do is follow a plan don't just kind of go in there and start picking up a weight and throwing it around so definitely think about a plan think about what you want and then try and follow a plan so that you can sort of see the consistency. And also see your results because like anything we're not going to see immediate results like it just doesn't that's not the way life works maybe tend to work that way maybe it's a guy who does but that's not the way health and wellbeing works and so if you follow a plan you can kind of say Ok each week I'm seeing that I am getting results that might not necessarily be visible but I can now do you tend to rise before I can only do that even 5 strength goals we just talk about tracking how yeah numbers increase is so much more of an incentive that because there's not going to buy products anyway yes are you going to get that many of us it's quite keep she might face it we can week if you know seeing a change with your practice pictures Yeah exactly and so they say like have began to get to waste is listening to this they're probably thinking and what is a plan and whether we're going to plan for yet so this will be a great time for me to plug my book yeah. Common The common reason that women I think avoid weights is because of that fear of being bulky right I think there to a degree can be some truth to it if you're not lifting correctly so if you like press a weight over your head you can sometimes if you're not doing it with good form you can actually make certain muscles that you might not want to grow grow like trash day I don't have to have your shoulder. Trops. They are shot of all the muscles So guys if you don't know chops the muscles like above your shoulder on your neck you're big big neck muscles and I'm not to stand with. The electrons trapped ladies drop you know we don't like traps likely And so it's like you but you can change the way that you execute the exercise to work a different muscle and build what's called your delts which are like the shoulder pad muscles right and I mean people know people have a doubt this is gymnast Delta is like hands down belts so really it's a quick exactly the quick quite a tip is like please pay attention to form and again learn from someone who's qualified and has you know talks about form as p.t.s. Let's all just pluck ourselves for a 2nd I always say sometimes it's worth investing in someone. He can help you because 6 months of faffing Yes 6 weeks of knowledge so yeah invest your money and your time wisely go to classes ask questions talk to people here because you can fast well in the gym and just get nowhere Yeah you tell me just so my last hips a basically my last day I'll just sound the same way thanks very much for being so really if you were to kind of this weekend whenever you're listening to this I want you to just kind of adds up how much money you spend on a night out. And then take that off one weekend and instead give it to a personal trainer to qualified as well trained and say please teach me how to do a squat a push up a pull up you know or whatever you can deadlift a lunge exactly nail these really good important human movements and I think the last I'm going to ask you is a question one of our listeners done yet and she says would you recommend doing if you've got lower back pain I have lower back problems so I shy away from whites and do lots of cardio Instead it could be coming from from the cardio I could be coming for a week without knowing exactly where it's coming from I would take my story for example it sounds really similar to what I was doing I just kept trying to stretch my back and I kept trying to just run it out and I think that back pain can really is really common a really common cause or symptom of weakness yet more than necessarily tightness strengthen a great I have clients in the past have come to me with that back pain because they often they were Valis and it got way 2nd in heart and I use what I feel quite a. Bit saying we should be training to running to train totally and I love battling so you can use like I said before like most of the prostate ha stuff which is to have issues the cleats the lower back and your whole. Thing and that's where your yoga comes into play I think because it compliments the weight training it totally does it really does and I think. Really great thing about yoga is that it's encouraging you to pay attention to your muscles and your joints more intricately and I think sometimes just going to like hit class or you know some session would yeah I think we would have to agree with show no we think that we would definitely recommend that you use weight training wisely to try and strengthen your core because that might be why you like over the years and glutes and weekly Yes I do some a big problem but that's a whole different Yeah and I'll just just ugly guys check you out thank you so much for coming on should I say you know having. Different now I think if you was to look at say a bikini competitor so when I was doing bikini and I bodybuilding statistician's I started to a pair like a hot quite a lot of muscle mass I looked I looked quite big and bold people thought it was just the Instagram pages in. I was so tiny and just because you have a goal but if you see the muscle and it and it looks that defined super defined muscle looks like it could be felt but it you know it's just so if like if you don't want to look super mostly in like really tried it then you just wouldn't put the kind of effort into really diet and down you would just eat like a normal person and weight train you really don't get if you have a balanced lifestyle which incorporates weight training into what you are not strong feminine you're going to fail empowered are going to feel like about there's no downside guys it's a pretty also be complete dog.
