And whether they're going to incur some tax bills because certainly under this new arrangement it's clear that Prince Charles is going to be running at least part of their their lifestyle and that would depend on who you talk to count his income here in Canada in this morning's other news Oxford University office the state school peoples have seen a sharp rise b.b.c. Around this time of day around a on a Sunday morning sort of scraping yourself into life and getting going like but interesting human being for months on the radio to talk about stuff no pressure this week it's you so. It's nice to see. Being well yes described by you. A new one for every day so well there's plenty to talk about with people he had not heard before just take us through your journey from symptom less cancer diagnosis to where we are now yes yes what was a couple of years ago when I decided to have just a general medical check with lots of tests and no we just thought I have a chair Yeah what they say is you get you know well into your fifty's you should keep an eye on how your fitness is weight and height and all of those things and everything was fine I was in good health I was just about to leave my job which I've been doing for 35 years or so quite a stressful job I've met someone or someone so. Life was changing for me but of these medical checks I had a slightly raised p.s.a. I've never heard of p.s.a. Before me neither prostate specific antigen I was 56 at the time and my figure was 5.4 and it shouldn't have been greater than 4 so I was referred and I went up to the Churchill. And the consultants had probably nothing but we'll just do a scam and it's just that kind of thing as well because I think if you live in Oxford you know you grew up in Killington you know the church the Churchill is a council aspect so I don't see it's one of these things that when you go in there is it you know it's a little bit daunting to be to even be there it seemed all quite surreal What was I doing there I was feeling fit well happy all of those things so the consults a consultant said let's just do a scan and the scan showed up a couple of things and again he said probably nothing but we'll just do a biopsy so. I had a biopsy Luckily I was asleep when they did it so it was through the apparently I'm . We called to no phone call came through I was expecting a call to say everything's fine don't bother coming in. I had an appointment a prearranged appointment and we went in sat in front of the consultant fiance held my hand and he said I'm sorry to have to tell you Mr Colegrove you have prostate cancer again all surreal because I'm feeling fit and well I've got no symptoms what is this all about and it's a few weeks between that initial kind of take Yeah yeah. I suppose the whole process took a couple of months so I became one of the $400.00 men a year newly diagnosed with prostate cancer in Oxfordshire alone $100.00 men so a lot right that is a lot that is a lot so the consultant then said Right so what we can do any turned his pad over and started drawing a picture of my sort of in it's he said to be around and hopefully spare your nerves and remove your prostate problem sorted but he did say there's a 40 percent chance and risk of impotence and a 40 percent risk of incontinence which you know both big deals to human normal life in fact yes absolutely and it's a bit like saying he would you like to cross the road there's a 40 percent chance you might not would you take that I mean it's it's a big percentage 40 percent so he said so you can have surgery or probably radiotherapy but that carries the same sort of risks. Don't decide now go away and think about it and I sort of. Always have expected my medical people to look after me this is what you need to do yeah we'll do this it yanks This Yeah but you've given me a choice right from the start I had this choice do you want this surgery or radiotherapy so. I went away in of course you start doing your own research and I spoke we all know people who've had problems because one in 8 of us. Has some point in our life men will get prostate cancer and if your ethnicity is black African then it's one in all cranky Crikey So I spoke to 4 men who had surgery actually so friends of yours or you had just had no suddenly you think so and so yeah he had this and all 4 were impotent. And that was that was frightening so I then found the Oxfordshire prostate cancer support group so I went along there and there were about 60 people in the room in the room and it's this still feel kind of weird at the time because I guess it's one of those things where you you're still getting your head about this is going yeah you are a prostate cancer sufferer Yes what is all this about I don't feel any different Yeah in fact I'm for I've got rid of my job I'm feeling better and yet some Everything is so life is so exciting so the chairman stood up at the oxygen of Prostate Cancer Support were lovely man John Grundy he was the chair them and he welcomed us all and then he said By the way everybody on the table back there there's a pile of incontinence pads Please help yourself and I'm I'm still do you think I'm not I'm not signed up for this. Says this involve me. Anyway the speaker that particular event was a chap called Professor Carol sick or. From the rather 1st cancer centers and he talked about something called proton beam therapy and this is quite important actually the conventional radiotherapy uses photons and photons like a beam of light as it were goes into your body zaps the cancer and then leaves your body and on its way in and on its way out anything in the way you get zapped damaged. Protons and I'm not a physicist and understand this it's something to do with wanton physics and brag Pekin all of that but it goes in with a low charge reaches the cancer zapped it and stops so the collateral damage is going to be less so my ears pricked up and I think this is your very 1st visit where you also thought you know pretty well the 1st visit to the. Group Yeah it was I was still in a bit of a daze so the 1st thing I did was go back to my consultant. In Oxford and say Oh I've heard about something called proton beam therapy and there was a sort of almost a folding of the arms and this it's like this newfangled stuff you know. There was some resistance and I was told that the data was there the data didn't really support it yet you know they're building these machines now these these places in the national health of opened their 1st one Kristie Hospital in Manchester. And I think the 2nd one is due to be opened in in London. And it was. But it sounded interesting I sent over to the rather furred and they said yeah we can treat you so then I proceeded to have the worst part of the treatment and it's quite important to share this actually in order to shrink the prostate a bit or make it easier to target they gave me I have one and a half doses of hormone therapy and that. What that did but I could deal with the hot flushes which occasionally you got but it was completely took away my libido my drive. For about 6 months with it and you've got a new feel so you say well you know life is nothing and everything yes you know it's that's it's tricky but it's tricky but it also undermined my confidence and this is really what I sort of this man in men are talking initiative is all about we need to talk about this stuff because traditionally us men don't talk about it and I had a brief 6 month. Insight into what it's like to be virtually impotent you know and ever since you know us men as you know early teens we've been waking up for school. And you know during the earlier years in the right well you know and that's normal and that's what we're about and suddenly I felt I felt probably less attractive as a man because I wasn't sort of didn't have that desire as yet and the thing is you know the way life is now in your fifty's you you know you you're maybe not even halfway through your life I mean this is you know an older man and you know this isn't something kind of inevitable you're thinking What the heck is going to happen in the next so if that really fits in well with my attitude I believe fifty's sixty's and seventy's as young I mean I'm with you know not to the sixty's and seventy's as young eighty's middle aged ninety's take it a bit easier why shouldn't we choose that attitude. And then since I've been part of this men are talking I'm meeting a lot of men who are you know in their seventy's and this is a very important part of us this this being men and being close loving to our partners this is a really important part and suddenly to have that taken away and that interest that insight from the hormone therapy it was it was it was frightening there are. Thousands of moment going going through this so I opted for proton beam therapy the hormone therapy eventually dissipated and things are fine and I was treated and cured of something I never knew I had and. I am back to normal current without these hideous side effect but the great thing is for you that you know you not just a treat and go back to normal you are you know you're being an ambassador which is you know I've had a lot of friends I've gone through cancer and just don't think to take with it afterwards because it's such a difficult thing to go 3 but you all you know you're using life's hard knocks to help other people yeah it's really important and I'm passionate about men should show their vulnerability and their emotions you know I was talking to Christina before I came in here actually and I'm saying. I think the ultimate test is can a man cry. In front of an emotional film in front of his partner No Well that is such a test of the way when it's all you know there's of course you can but like you know it's one of those things that would just never even occurred to me I'd just go full on ugly cry Saul I mean yeah but you know yeah you know my wife we got married this sort last year so congratulations thank you very much so. You know we're sitting there and watching a film and I'm welling up among think you know what you're going to think. And yes I mean there's a few things that are banned in my house the discussion of pink being a girls color and blue ribbon boys and the phrase man up because I have 2 boys to bring up and I don't like that phrase Yeah no no Exactly and showing your vulnerability particularly as a man people warm to you actually because you're saying this is how it is yeah let's talk about it and one of my roles has been. Referred to me to talk about the new the newly diagnosed the shell shocked yes the shell shocked frightened. Desperate really really quite concerned and I I just it's great that we're talking about this yeah and it's interesting enough I went to see my g.p. About something else actually and I told him about it had this proton beam therapy he'd never heard of it and he said he gets no end of men through with bowel problems because of course radiotherapy zaps zapped anything in its way so that bowel problems impotence incontinence all of those things and the cost of treating that is is just massive and coincidentally in Boxing Day this year the University of Pennsylvania have just released a lot of data about the fact that there's $2.00 thirds less likely to have side effects from proton beam so it's great that the National Health is you know developing these centers Unfortunately they're not going to be treating prostate cancer at this time I mean it's you know the n.h.s. Hands are tied in a way in that they have to go with stuff that's been researched and the new stuff doesn't get you know you don't get that data straight away so who knows in 5 years time we could be looking at a total different landscape but you're so interesting to talk about we could talk more we need to play a song so going to play a song and then get you back in to do some take 3 some of the stories that interested you in the papers but if they want to find out about the the talking therapy in the meantime is there any way they can go to you know well one of my things is going out and talking to groups I've been traveling the country actually talking to groups about my experience and so they can contact time that men are talking dot co dot u.k. And I'm also interested in talking to groups of ladies because you know w.y. For instance that they've got far the solo now where absolutely you know and it's really just getting more air time to to the subject of my brain Well that's all we do in this morning more from time in cold grave after Dolly Parton Yes. On the right 25 Sunday morning at b.b.c. Radio What's that. In the. The trial. For the. That's a 9 to 5 the b.b.c. Radio Oxford to my guest in studio with me time on Colegrove prostate cancer survivor who helps other people talk through it all I've had a great chat about that but now he's been going through the papers as well of you spotted in the papers time well. In the Daily Mail here of course mix it is everything. I'm cut out of the back but something actually quite serious and quite well incredibly disturbing which is gambling amongst young people particularly like young men leads to 500 young men taking their lives every year I'm not that's just shocking. One of my son's friends took his own life. A few years back and you think of the loneliness that just just dreadful How does somebody get into that situation and this gambling thing I don't know of on your mobile phones anyway you look any sporting program comes an advert to encourage you to go to gamble Luckily I never win. I think the danger is if you when you think I can do this yeah I mean the tide seems to be turning we covered this week that they're going to stop taking credit cards you know a men's which you know has. Got to be a positive step forward but there's been cause as well for gambling perhaps a team more but yeah an interesting one to watch I think and keep an eye on this more on that if you want to read it. In the Daily Mail the lovely young wonderful people there will go on of them yeah I know it's very emotional and then we go from the sublime to the ridiculous Well here we are and. Yes promiscuous queen bee likely to be executed executed by other all these yes exactly other workers that the queen needs to stick to one worker and that's the deal striking execution what I want to know is what how many scientists have to stare at how long to find this out as one. May think that more about that there was a telegram for the times. I'm sorry the Telegraph telegram to page 12 on the Telegraph good stuff pleasure to have you in a Great to catch up and you know so well enjoy your or your newly wedded status I think you can still say this after last April release for the 1st year you get to be a newlywed right yeah Absolutely and thanks for coming and thank you so it's b.b.c.
